Planting project brings joy
SUPPORT: The red zone planting project is giving members of the community who have intellectual disabilities a
place to learn skills and meet new people.

EVERY TUESDAY morning,
a cheerful bunch of volunteers
can be found working at the
Swanns Rd Pocket Park in the
red zone.
Amongst lots of goodnatured
banter and chatter, the
crew are planting wind-grasses
at the park as part of a collaborative
project between Hōhepa
Canterbury and Avon Ōtākaro
Network.
Hōhepa Canterbury, a
non-profit residential and day
service community for people
with intellectual disabilities,
also runs volunteer sessions in
Richmond Community Garden
and the Fungi Farm.
Crew member Stephen said
the planting work is fun, easy
and he loves it, while his friend
Adam is enjoying meeting new
people.
Hōhepa Canterbury support
co-ordinator Karen Wilson
said the volunteers are learning
skills while enjoying the
feeling of being valued for their
hard work.
Said Wilson: “Our philosophy
is ‘every life fully lived’
and we find projects like this
helps us to break down barriers
and the stigma that people
with disabilities ‘can’t do anything’.”
The planting work fits
well with Hōhepa’s LEAP
philosophy of ‘Learn, Explore,
Activate Potential’.
The crew first started working
on the Richmond community
garden in 2021 and
found it to be a welcoming and
inclusive place.
Avon Ōtākaro Network network
manager Hayley Guglietta
said the collaboration
is a “win-win” for everyone
involved.
“It helps us get the planting
done, and the residents are out
enjoying nature,” she said.
“We really like working with
Hōhepa.”
Once established, the park
will become a living example
of how to encourage native
biodiversity.
Trees and shrubs planted
at the back will attract birds,
while wind-grasses for insects
and plants for lizards are at the
front.
Ongaonga (native stinging
nettle) is being safely planted
further back to attract native
butterflies.
Fruit trees will be grafted
towards the front of the park
for red zone foragers, along
with herbs.
The park will take about two
years to establish, and Guglietta
says the Hōhepa crew will
help with the establishment
and maintenance during that
time.

First guest arrives for treatment
at brand new cancer centre
THE CANTERBURY Cancer
Centre has welcomed its first
guest for treatment.
Nick Farr travelled from
Tākaka to undertake his cancer
treatment at the recently opened
centre on Langdons Rd.
Canterbury,
West Coast, Otago
and Southland
Cancer Society
chief executive
Nicola Coom
said he previously

stayed at Daffodil
House and Daffodil
Lodge when
he was first diagnosed.
“We have recently welcomed
him back after he received a
second diagnosis requiring treatment
in Christchurch,” Coom
said.
“We are delighted to welcome
Nick as our first guest at the
Canterbury Cancer Centre.
“What makes it even more special
is that Nick officially opened
the centre . . . on behalf of all
families impacted by cancer.
“We understand the challenges
faced by families when a loved
one needs to travel away from
home for cancer treatment, and
we are honoured to be able to offer
guests like Nick a ‘home away
from home’ where they can feel
supported and cared for during
what can be a challenging time
of their life.”
The centre is the largest facility
of its kind in the South Island
and Coom said it signifies a new
chapter in cancer care for the
country. All services are under
one roof and families have access
to new services, such as counselling,
physiotherapy, nutrition,
peer support and more.
The new facility was officially
opened last month. Prime Minister
Chris Hipkins and Minister
of Health Dr Ayesha Verrall attended
the blessing of the centre.
It was built with $6.5 million
in funding from the Government’s
infrastructure reference
group for shovel-ready projects,
which was allocated in 2020.
The centre has 50 rooms for
patients and families from the
South Island. It also has space for

It has opened just in time
for some patients. The Cancer
Society in Christchurch said
last month it was having to
use motels to house Otago and
Southland cancer patients and
their whānau because their
other accommodation was full to
overflowing.
At the time, all 36 rooms at
Daffodil House and Daffodil
Lodge in Christchurch were
full with patients from different
districts.
“For obvious reasons we don’t
like seeing families having to
return, but we are proud that we
are here when they need us and
that we can offer free services,
such as travel and accommodation,
to reduce the financial
burden that comes with cancer,”
said Coom.
“This was a huge community
effort and we are grateful to the
support of the businesses, trusts,
individuals and community
groups throughout the South
Island who have generously
supported our vision for this
building.
“I think it’s a great representation
of what we can achieve
together when we combine our
efforts.
“While this a fabulous building,
the centre is way more than
bricks and mortar, it is a symbol
of hope and it is our hope that it
is utilised as a hub for everyone
involved in cancer to collaborate
and innovate together.
“We have a big challenge in
front of us, the demand for
cancer services is increasing
and we can only respond to this
together.”

Love of literacy prompts writer to
help schools fundraise for books
WIN-WIN: Author Julie Folkers wants to help schools and
clubs raise funds for book buying.

DESPITE LIVING with multiple
sclerosis, children’s author and
publisher Julie Folkers aims to
help young people develop their
reading and writing.
The Wigram-based writer
wants to supply notebooks to
schools, charities and other
organisations for $10, which they
can then on-sell for $15. Schools
and clubs could use the funds
raised for book buying.
“Your school or club can earn
$5 from each notebook ordered.
That’s easier than standing in
the cold cooking sausages,” said
Folkers.
The intention is for students to
use the notebooks to write their
own books.
Folkers, the owner of Ooky
Spooky Publications, said she has
produced “about 400 notebooks
this year” to sell.
She will also be offering her
children’s books for a discounted
price of $12 each, which can be
on-sold for $18.
Folkers was chair of the New
Zealand Society of Authors in
2012, and signed with a UK
publisher to sell illustrated
versions of her own stories
in 2017.

children.
Her first fantasy novel for
children is called Abby and the
Hopplescotch Realm, which is
book one in a series about the
adventures of a group of children
and other characters in different
realms.
Folkers’ other series include
the read-along Fairytale series,
the Dreamland series, and the
Mr Arthur series.
“(My) books are fun, laughter,
mischief and mayhem with a
mystery involved with so much
happening they hold the reader
in the book,” Folkers said.
“They are also great for kids
who are learning English as their
second language with a parent
who needs to develop their English
as well.”
Folker was in her 30s and had
just had her first child when she
was diagnosed with multiple
sclerosis.
“It was a mystery losing my
eyesight in a single day and
regaining it later on. I’ve been
blind three times all together
and it made me rethink what I
was going to do with myself,” she
said.
“I always said I would love to
write kids’ books . . . I re-trained,
got my diploma and decided to
follow my dream.
“My plan now that I’m back
into doing school visits again,
which were restricted due
to Covid-19, is to help these
organisations buy books so the
kids can continue to develop
vital skills.”

Recently, I was struck so much by
the constant use of the word ‘mentor’
that I thought I’d do a gentle dive
into the whole topic to answer some
questions about something I hold as
a very precious and valued act.
Questions like: What does being a mentor
involve? What can all parties expect from the
relationship? Where can you find a mentor?
These are all part of this large philosophical
discussion, so let’s enter it together.
A mentor is defined as someone who shares
their knowledge, skill and experience to grow
another person.
Although it can be a commercial relationship,
it doesn’t have to be.
I’ve been a mentor to a significant number
of people and it’s been one of the most
incredible opportunities I’ve had in life. I can
share that some of the relationships were short
and precise, while others have lasted years,
and they have helped me become a better
person just as much as I hope they’ve helped
the people I’ve mentored.
At its core, mentoring is a relationship
anchored deeply in trust and it can cover
anything the party being mentored requires.
The relationship is intended to uplift,
encourage, inspire and guide, with the
desire for growth in many areas being at its
foundation. It can also challenge and caution
when that’s needed.
Not only is trust required, respect is also
essential given it’s hard to listen to someone
who says one thing whilst doing another or
who doesn’t have more than a scraping of
knowledge in the field that the mentee wants
assistance in.
I’ve had, and still have, world-class mentors.
Thank you, Burt, Paul, Sarah, John and Cam.
They have always uplifted me. I’ve learnt
remarkable things about my profession, the
world and myself, and I’ve also been pulled
into line when the moment required it!
I pay them enormous gratitude and respect,
and it’s important that the values you all have
are congruent and aligned.
There are said to be three types of mentoring.
Firstly, one on one. For many, this is the
favoured kind of space for imparting and
gaining knowledge. It also safeguards
confidentiality, which all mentoring requires,
and there’s something special about being
one on one with someone given the busy lives
most of us lead. As an aside, this would always
be my preference because it means I can focus
more intently on the person and the job at
hand.
Other mentoring can be conducted at a
distance, invariably online, and here the
mentor needs to ensure that they test and
troubleshoot all devices.
There’s nothing worse than being deep in
conversation and then to have a technical
issue. It reduces time and confidence, and
given I’m useless at technical rescues I tend
to avoid this method. There’s also a reduction
in some of the clues you get when you are
in a personal one on one and potentially
the emotional connection that comes with
mentoring.
Thirdly, there are group sessions, which can
work for those who learn best in a collective
and collaborative way, though it can be noisy
and you have to be weary of big talkers versus
those that never talk. It can be tricky. A mentor
in this space needs to have the skills to bring
the best out in everyone whilst having great
processes for following up.
So, what haven’t we covered? How about
where to find a mentor?
It could be a matter of going online to
search and there’s an extensive number of
companies and individuals available all at
varying price points. There’s word of mouth
or recommendations, and there’s also the
shoulder-tapping of friends or people you
admire and trust.
I’ve tended to work with people as a mentee
from that perspective and I’ve never been let
down.
So, there you have it. Is it something you want
to embrace or consider? If so, I know you’ll find
it, as I have, life changing.

New Nissan Z pays homage to its history
A NEW and long overdue
version one of Japan’s most iconic
sport coupes, the Nissan Z, is
keeping the torch burning for
these models, at time when many
car makers are hitting the delete
button on them.
This is a Nissan with a
colourful history, dated back
54 years to 1969, when the
great granddad of today’s Z,
the Datsun 240Z, made its
world debut. The new seventhgeneration
Z dropped its
numerical prefix and in the
process a little bit of the car’s
heritage.
The new Z adopts a traditional

snug cabin seamlessly blends
modern technology with vintage
Z touches. The centre stack uses
a three-zone approach, placing
three analogue pod gauges on the
instrument panel (boost, turbo
speed, volt) and all within the
driver’s gaze.
Comfy black woven cloth seats,
with an 8-way manual driver’s
seat, are a great place to enjoy
all this iconic sport car has to
offer. A full range of convenience
technology includes Nissan
Intelligent Key with Push Button
Start, Intelligent Cruise Control,
auto-dimming rearview mirror,
Rearview Monitor, two 12-volt
power points, and two USB
points (Type-A and Type-C).
There’s a modest 8.0-inch touch
screen, a lot smaller than you
would expect in a car costing this
much.
There’s been a worthwhile rejig
of the suspension. The front and
rear dampers have switched to a
new mono tube shock absorber
design with a larger diameter
than the outgoing 370Z. The
upshot is an estimated 20 per
cent reduction in dampening
force to help minimise impact
shock over uneven surfaces,
and unleash better handling
stability. The front doublewishbone
aluminum suspension
features uprated geometry
with mathematical wizardry
improving the vehicle’s straightline
