Barbie wins talent show
GEORGIA Reynolds is a big fan
of the Barbie movie, and she took
inspiration from it to come up with
a winning dance number at The
Palms’ talent quest.
The quest saw more than 50
talented youngsters dance, sing,
and act in hopes of winning the
competition.
“It felt good to win,” said
Georgia, who is in year 4 at Te Ara
Koropiko West Spreydon School.
Said her mother, Roseanne
Reeves: “Her dance teacher, Steph
Phillips, took her to the Barbie
movie to inspire the dance they
made together . . . she has been the
biggest support for Georgia.”
Georgia has been working with
her instructor from Legacy Dance
Studios for a year and a half and
was awarded $1000 in vouchers,
alongside first place, to spend at the
shopping centre.

VOLUNTEERS ARE needed for
a Halswell-specific community
patrol car as crime increases in the
fast-growing area.
The Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community Board
wants funding for a vehicle to take
the pressure off the Hornby community
patrol which also covers
Halswell.
But to get funding, the community
board will need to show there
are enough volunteers to make it
viable.
Said Halswell Ward councillor
and community board member
Andrei Moore: “Our community
board has identified supporting
a new community patrol car, as a
project, is something the community
would be strongly in support
of.
“Right now, I’m putting the
call out for expressions of interest
from willing volunteers for both
patrols and a new committee.”

Armed police raid
Sydenham house
RAID: The Milton St property was searched and a woman was taken into custody
last week.
RESIDENTS OF a street in
Sydenham were told to stay
inside their homes while armed
police raided a house.
A neighbour of the Milton St
property where the raid took
place said Armed Offenders’
Squad members arrived at the
house about 3pm on Thursday
last week.
The neighbour said they were
told to stay in their home until
the raid was over.
A woman from the house was
taken into custody while police
searched for two men.
“Police cuffed a young woman
and have yet to find the two
men,” the neighbour said.
A person was later charged
with a drug-related offence.
“They first searched with a
drone inside the house, then they
went in.
“We were out on the patio
and (I) was asked to go inside. It
was hectic with lots of guns and
stuff.”
Another neighbour of the
Milton St property said: “I saw a
shadow go past before I saw the
full body – a dude in a full armed
offenders’ suit was pointing a finger
at me and asked me to come
to the window. They then asked
me about the neighbours.”
TEAM: The Hornby patrol car currently covers the Halswell/
Hornby area with eyes, ears, and assistance when needed.

and operated by their local
communities and volunteers,
who work closely with police and
other agencies to assist in building
safer communities.
Moore said that there is capacity
for another 20 volunteers
and the response to his proposal
will determine whether there is
enough people power to deliver
more patrol hours on the road.
“Our community is on track
to soon be about the size of Gisborne
so the time has probably
come,” said Moore.
“It will require a few willing
volunteers for patrols and establishing
a new committee, but I
believe it’s achievable if the support
is there.”

55 applicants, aged five to 16
years, took part in three days of
heats and a final show day on
September 30.
Westburn Primary School’s
Aura Mendiratta came in second
place overall at the quest with a
bhangra solo dance.
“I felt very proud and lucky,”
said eight-year-old Aura.
“The performance went well,
and I’d definitely participate in
(the talent quest) next year.”
Aura plans to use her vouchers
on her family and will ‘also buy
some food and clothes for needy
children who do not have that
many opportunities’.
In third place, was Cleo
Fitzgerald of Addington, who
sang ‘Hallelujah’ solo.

Addington Farm
expansion plans

expand its community garden
operation.
It is asking to use an area in the
south corner of Addington Park.
In early September, Addington
Farm manager William LeHeux,
along with volunteers, provided
a deputation to the Waihoro
Spreydon-Cashmere-Heathcote
Community Board on Addington
Farm.
The proposal has been
endorsed by Food Together
Aotearoa, the Addington Park
Community Group, Addington
Te Kura Taumatau, Manuka
Cottage Addington Community
House and the Canterbury Community
Gardens Association.
Said community board chairperson
Callum Ward: “We are
very supportive of the idea . . .
we’ve handed the request over to
staff to investigate it in more detail,
including how we’ll consult
with the public before anything
goes ahead.

food in public spaces and we’re
excited about the prospect of
initiatives like this.

organisation that aims to convert
unused backyards into garden
plots.
The food is shared with volunteers
and given to their community

agriculture
programme.
