VOLUNTEERS ARE needed for 

a Halswell-specific community 

patrol car as crime increases in the 

fast-growing area. 

The Waipuna Halswell-Hornby- 

Riccarton Community Board 

wants funding for a vehicle to take 

the pressure off the Hornby community 

patrol which also covers 

Halswell. 

But to get funding, the community 

board will need to show there 

are enough volunteers to make it 

viable. 

Said Halswell Ward councillor 

and community board member 

Andrei Moore: “Our community 

board has identified supporting 

a new community patrol car, as a 

project, is something the community 

would be strongly in support 

of. 

“Right now, I’m putting the 

call out for expressions of interest 

from willing volunteers for both 

patrols and a new committee.”

Georgia Reynolds took out first 

place. 

“It felt good to win,” said 

Georgia, who is in year 4 at Te 

Ara Koropiko West Spreydon 

School. 

Said her mother, Roseanne 

Reeves: “Her dance teacher, 

Steph Phillips, took her to the 

Barbie movie to inspire the 

dance they made together . . . 

she has been the biggest support 

for Georgia.” 

Georgia has been working 

with her instructor from Legacy 

Dance Studios for a year and a 

half and was awarded $1000 in 

vouchers, alongside first place, 

to spend at the shopping centre. 

In third place, was Cleo 

Fitzgerald of Addington, who 

sang Hallelujah solo. 

TALENT: Georgia Reynolds took out first 

place with her Barbie-inspired dance, 

and Cleo Fitzgerald sang her way to third 

place with a rendition of Leonard Cohen’s 

Hallelujah. 

“This talent quest was a big 

step up for Cleo in terms of 

performing in a bigger situation 

with crowds of people,” said her 

mother, Ella Fitzgerald. 

“I was amazed at how brave 

she was; she took everything in 

her stride.” 

Cleo, who is nine, attends St 

Mark’s School and was recently 

awarded the senior girls’ singing 

cup and performed in the 

school’s production.

and operated by their local 

communities and volunteers, who 

work closely with police and other 

agencies to assist in building safer 

communities. 

Moore said that there is capacity 

for another 20 volunteers and 

the response to his proposal will 

determine whether there is enough 

people power to deliver more 

patrol hours on the road. 

“Our community is on track to 

soon be about the size of Gisborne 

so the time has probably come,” 

said Moore. 

“It will require a few willing volunteers 

for patrols and establishing 

a new committee, but I believe 

it’s achievable if the support is 

there.”

Love of literacy prompts writer to 

help schools fundraise for books 

WIN-WIN: Author Julie Folkers wants to help schools and 

clubs raise funds for book buying.

DESPITE LIVING with multiple 

sclerosis, children’s author and 

publisher Julie Folkers aims to 

help young people develop their 

reading and writing. 

The Wigram-based writer 

wants to supply notebooks to 

schools, charities and other 

organisations for $10, which they 

can then on-sell for $15. Schools 

and clubs could use the funds 

raised for book buying. 

“Your school or club can earn 

$5 from each notebook ordered. 

That’s easier than standing in 

the cold cooking sausages,” said 

Folkers. 

The intention is for students to 

use the notebooks to write their 

own books. 

Folkers, the owner of Ooky 

Spooky Publications, said she has 

produced “about 400 notebooks 

this year” to sell. 

She will also be offering her 

children’s books for a discounted 

price of $12 each, which can be 

on-sold for $18. 

Folkers was chair of the New 

Zealand Society of Authors in 

2012, and signed with a UK 

publisher to sell illustrated 

versions of her own stories 

in 2017. 

Folkers first fantasy novel for 

children. 

Her first fantasy novel for 

children is called Abby and the 

Hopplescotch Realm, which is 

book one in a series about the 

adventures of a group of children 

and other characters in different 

realms. 

Folkers’ other series include 

the read-along Fairytale series, 

the Dreamland series, and the 

Mr Arthur series. 

“(My) books are fun, laughter, 

mischief and mayhem with a 

mystery involved with so much 

happening they hold the reader 

in the book,” Folkers said. 

“They are also great for kids 

who are learning English as their 

second language with a parent 

who needs to develop their English 

as well.” 

Folker was in her 30s and had 

just had her first child when she 

was diagnosed with multiple 

sclerosis. 

“It was a mystery losing my 

eyesight in a single day and 

regaining it later on. I’ve been 

blind three times all together 

and it made me rethink what I 

was going to do with myself,” she 

said. 

“I always said I would love to 

write kids’ books . . . I re-trained, 

got my diploma and decided to 

follow my dream. 

“My plan now that I’m back 

into doing school visits again, 

which were restricted due 

to Covid-19, is to help these 

organisations buy books so the 

kids can continue to develop 

vital skills.”

New Nissan Z pays homage to its history 

A NEW and long overdue 

version one of Japan’s most iconic 

sport coupes, the Nissan Z, is 

keeping the torch burning for 

these models, at time when many 

car makers are hitting the delete 

button on them. 

This is a Nissan with a 

colourful history, dated back 

54 years to 1969, when the 

great granddad of today’s Z, 

the Datsun 240Z, made its 

world debut. The new seventhgeneration 

Z dropped its 

numerical prefix and in the 

process a little bit of the car’s 

heritage. 

The new Z adopts a traditional 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

rear-wheel drive sports car 

design, with a long bonnet, lower 

rear end stance and a silhouette 

that pays homage to the firstgeneration 

Z. 

All models run a high-energy 

3.0-litre V6 twin turbo engine 

with the choice of a close-ratio 

6-speed manual gearbox 

complete or a 9-speed automatic 

with paddle shifters. Both wear 

the same $84,990 price tag. The 

test vehicle was an auto, which 

most buyers are expected to opt 

for. 

The motor features variable 

valve timing, force-fed by 

small-diameter turbochargers, 

regulated for maximum 

spooling speed 

to balance power 

output and throttleresponse 

time. These 

enhancements improve 

the vehicle’s power to 

weight ratio by over 

12 per cent and deliver sharper 

acceleration compared to its 

impressive predecessor, the 370Z, 

and it was no slouch. Peak power 

and torque rise in the new engine 

to 298kW and 475Nm – the 

latter being 31 per cent higher 

than its predecessor. With its 

strong, almost turbine-like power 

delivery there are few other sixcylinder 

coupes that provide the 

exhilarating acceleration of this 

one for its asking price. It even 

knocks the performance spots 

off a number of more expensive 

rivals. 

The new 9-speed automatic 

offers direct and rapid gear 

changes that are executed with 

pinpoint precision. It gave the test 

a car an extra lively feel thanks to 

its wide gear ratios and standard 

launch control system. 

Designed to fit the driver 

and passenger like a glove, the 

snug cabin seamlessly blends 

modern technology with vintage 

Z touches. The centre stack uses 

a three-zone approach, placing 

three analogue pod gauges on the 

instrument panel (boost, turbo 

speed, volt) and all within the 

driver’s gaze. 

Comfy black woven cloth seats, 

with an 8-way manual driver’s 

seat, are a great place to enjoy 

all this iconic sport car has to 

offer. A full range of convenience 

technology includes Nissan 

Intelligent Key with Push Button 

Start, Intelligent Cruise Control, 

auto-dimming rearview mirror, 

Rearview Monitor, two 12-volt 

power points, and two USB 

points (Type-A and Type-C). 

There’s a modest 8.0-inch touch 

screen, a lot smaller than you 

would expect in a car costing this 

much. 

There’s been a worthwhile rejig 

of the suspension. The front and 

rear dampers have switched to a 

new mono tube shock absorber 

design with a larger diameter 

than the outgoing 370Z. The 

upshot is an estimated 20 per 

cent reduction in dampening 

force to help minimise impact 

shock over uneven surfaces, 

and unleash better handling 

stability. The front doublewishbone 

aluminum suspension 

features uprated geometry 

with mathematical wizardry 

improving the vehicle’s straightline 

stability. A two-point front

tight and unforgiving one, the 

test car navigated them with 

consummate ease. Its low-slung 

stance and the huge footprint of 

the meaty tyres have the excellent 

grip required to take charge on 

bumpy undulating surfaces, with 

plenty of adhesion in reserve if 

needed.
