the teenager who killed 61-yearold
has been swift.
Justice Rachel
granted him leave to apply for
Said Fiona Yang: “Kill a
With the possibility of home
detention? That’s not a bloody
sentence. It’s a joke. His poor
Carolyn Murphy added:
“Feeling incredibly sad for the
Emails warn
of staffing
crisis at
mental
health unit
• By Sam Sherwood
STAFF AT Canterbury’s forensic
mental health service warned of
a “staffing crisis” with one saying
they were being put in a position
of delivering care that was “at best
negligent, and at worst unsafe and
compromising”.
In response to the emails,
obtained by the NZ Herald under
the Official Information Act, Te
Whatu Ora Waitaha acknowledged
the pressures their specialist
mental health and addiction
services were experiencing,
including consultant psychiatrists,
and said workforce shortages were
a “large part of this”.
However, they say the service
has seen a “significant improvement”
recently across almost all
professions.
Te Whatu Ora Waitaha released
a series of emails to the Herald
under the Official Information
Act relating to concerns about
staffing shortages.
On July 31, a staff member
working in the Forensic
Community Team at Hillmorton
Hospital emailed several people,
including Forensic Mental Health
Nursing director Patsy Tarrant.In
the email, the staff member asked
what input the FCT would be
receiving that week to cover “dire
and unsafe staffing shortages
and how patient care will be
managed”. • Turn to page 4
Kiwi chicks welcomed to world
THE FIRST kiwi chicks of
the season have hatched at
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve.
The reserve has recently
had the arrival of two
homeborn kiwi chicks; a
Rowi kiwi chick (right)
hatched on October 2.
On October 14, a Haast
Tokoeka kiwi chick was
welcomed into the world.
The reserve also incubates
great spotted kiwi, and North
Island brown kiwi.
There are two stages of
hatching: the ‘internal pip’,
which is when the chick pokes
its bill into the air pocket at
the blunt end of the egg; and
‘external pip’, which is when
the first crack in the shell
appears.
Kiwi usually take about
five to seven days to complete
their whole hatching process,
however, the Tokoeko chick
was in a rush as it bulldozed
through its hatch in four days.
Both chicks will live with
a brooder for three to four
weeks before moving into a
pre-release enclosure.
The reserve is part of
Operation Nest Egg, which
is a programme that aims
to lower kiwi death rates
by removing eggs and chicks
from their burrows and
caring for them in captivity
until they’re big enough to
fend for themselves in the
wild.
Only 5 per cent of kiwi
chicks that hatch in the wild
reach adulthood whereas
Operation Nest Egg gives
kiwi a 65 per cent chance of
surviving to adulthood.
Nagel and his associates had
pursued Kelly from the bus
exchange north on Colombo St
before walking into Cashel Mall
as they believed he had been taking
photos of them on his phone.
They engaged with Kelly
outside Ballantynes department
store.
Kelly tried to walk away but
one of the group approached
him, causing Kelly to swing
a punch in self-defence. The
person then kicked Kelly in the
shin.
Nagel walked through the
group, approached Kelly and
kicked him in the face with his
right foot, using a martial artsstyle
kick, immediately losing
consciousness and falling to the
ground.
Members of the public attempted
CPR on Kelly until
emergency services arrived and
took him to hospital, where he
was put in an induced coma.
Ten days later Kelly died from
his injuries.
When questioned by police,
Nagel admitted kicking Kelly
in the face because he wanted
him to delete the photos on his
phone. Police found no evidence
that Kelly was taking photos of
the group.
Commented:
David Robert
courts. How can the judges live
sentences like this? Disgusting.”
Carolyn Murphy felt incredibly
“Justice has definitely not been
Posted Pitiriria Morgan: “I really
Added Peter Grant: “What!
many others. And all based on
the police etc appeal this very
Media Council
upholds Kāinga
Ora complaint
SOCIAL HOUSING agency
Kāinga Ora complained The
Star had failed to disclose a
reporter’s link to a story he wrote
about housing intensification in
Christchurch.
The Media Council said there
was no dispute the reporter (a
contractor) had a strong connection
with the subject matter
and The Star had an obligation to
include a disclaimer outlining the
link and allow readers to judge
for themselves. The July 13 story
headlined ‘Agency fights council
plan’ was about Kāinga Ora’s
opposition to the city council’s
proposed changes to reduce
housing intensification in the city
– known as Plan Change 14.
Kāinga Ora expressed
concern that during the week
the journalist had been quoted
by at least two media outlets
as the chair of a Christchurch
residents association where he
had made it clear that he opposed
intensification. The agency said
The Star story did not disclose
the journalist’s link to the subject
and readers should have been
informed of this conflict of
interest.
In response, The Star said it
had no issues with the journalist’s
objectivity or balance, as had
been demonstrated numerous
times when he had covered other
housing stories.
The journalist had raised the
potential for conflicts of interests
because of his role as a residents’
association chair when he began
contracting with Star Media. The
Star said potential conflicts of
interest would be discussed on a
story-by-story basis.
When the journalist raised the
issue in relation to this story, The
Star said it had no issues with
the journalist’s previous stories
on Kāinga Ora. Nor did it see
any reason to put a disclosure at
the end of the story as it had not
done so in previous articles.
The Media Council encourages
media organisations to consider
the wisdom of having journalists
covering news stories in which
they have a direct involvement.
The full Media Council ruling
can be found on its website.
Staff shortage could
• From page 1
Due to one staff member being
away sick and another on training,
that left the staff member
and one other for case manager
coverage.
“While I am aware staff cannot
be plucked from nowhere, I am
concerned that there seems to be
a watch-and-wait approach with
regards to managing our staffing
shortage.”
The staff member said “I
personally, will not be extending
myself beyond my current caseload
– in the interests of trying
to safely and appropriately manage
the caseload I already have
(which remains difficult).
“There is currently no scope
for safe patient care in the
instance of any staff sickness,
given we are trying to operate
as though we have a full staffing
quota when we are far from that
luxury.”
The staffer suggested that,
effective immediately, the FCT
adopt “emergency measures”
similar to what was done during
the Covid-19 lockdown, for
patient care.
In response, Tarrant told the
staffer they were in “very challenging
times”, but assured it was
not a watch-and-wait situation.
She said the senior leadership
team had been working to come
up with “contingency plans.
“The situation at FCT has been
escalated,” the email said.
‘I am extremely concerned
about the current level
of psychiatrist staffing in
the Canterbury Regional
Forensic Service’
– Hillmorton Hospital
staffer, July 2023
The staff member responded
by saying some remedies that
had been put in place still had
around about half of the case
manager full-time equivalents
they required to function.
“I am concerned that we
continue to provide service that
would be expected/reflective of
a full staffing contingent, thus
putting us in the position of
delivering care that is at best
negligent, and at worst unsafe
and compromising.”
On August 9 a psychiatrist
emailed the acting clinical director
of Forensic Mental Health
Services Jane Hughes and the
chief of psychiatry Sigi Schmidt.
“I am extremely concerned
about the current level of psychiatrist
staffing in the Canterbury
Regional Forensic Service,” the
staffer said.
The staff member said by their
calculations Senior Medical
Officer staffing was at about half
the funded full-time equivalent
allocation.
lead to ‘compromising, unsafe’ care
“This staffing crisis will
become worse during periods of
planned leave from September
2023 onwards.”
The staff member said there
were “multiple other issues at
play here”, they gave examples
however that information was
redacted.
“I cannot see these issues being
resolved in the short term. There
has been two recent departures
of experienced SMO staff and
further staff appear likely to
follow,” the email said.
“The current situation requires
an immediate high-level
organisational response. I also
strongly recommend briefing
the Ministry of Health about the
situation, if this has not already
taken place.”
Schmidt replied the following
day to say he shared the staffer’s
concerns, particularly in relation
to their suggestion that further
staff were likely to leave.
“We take the well-being and
retention of all staff including
SMOs very seriously and I agree
that an organisational response
is required.”
Schmidt said the issue with
reduced medical staffing had
already been escalated, and
he’d had discussions with the
Director of Mental Health and
Addictions Dr John Crawshaw
SHORTAGE: Staff at Canterbury’s forensic mental health service warned in July of a “staffing
crisis” that could lead to compromised care. Since then, Te Whatu Ora Waitaha said the
service has seen a “significant improvement”.
PHOTO: GETTY
about the SMO departures and
concerns regarding the sustainability
of the forensic service,
including concerns about the
viability of the forensic advanced
training programme in
Christchurch.
In her response, Hughes suggested
an in-person meeting
would facilitate a “more in-depth
discussion.
“I understand the pressure the
service is under and I appreciate
your commitment to the forensic
service . . . ”
On August 17 the psychiatrist
emailed again asking for an
“urgent update” on what contingency
planning about SMO staffing
in the forensic service had
occurred to date and requested
an “urgent meeting” to discuss
issues.
Hughes said she did not have
a further update, but said the
concerns they had raised were
“too important to discuss by
email”, and asked to meet in
person.
Te Whatu Ora Waitaha’s
specialist mental health service
general manager Vicki Dent told
the Herald she acknowledged the
pressures the specialist mental
health and addiction services
were re-experiencing.
She said the staffing within
Canterbury’s Forensic Mental
Health Service had seen a “significant
improvement” recently
across almost all professions.
“However we currently have
vacancies for psychiatrists and
one of our accredited supervisors
for our advanced forensic
psychiatry training programme
has resigned.
“We are actively recruiting
for more forensic psychiatrists
and we have plans in place to
make sure our current advanced
forensic psychiatry trainee has
adequate supervision. We are
also working with our colleagues
across the country to consider
our next steps for our training
programme.”
Dent added it was important
to recognise that the change of
the scale required to address
the mental health and addiction
system would “take time to
implement and establish”.
“However, Te Whatu Ora is
committed to improving and
transforming the system to
ensure that anyone who needs
support gets it, regardless of age
or location, with timely access
to care. Our staff go above and
beyond to provide care to our
community and I thank them for
all of their hard work.”
Best home, best street: This stunner
could make house price history
• By Nikki Preston
CHRISTCHURCH’S “best
house” has hit the market for
the first time and could smash
records to become the city’s most
expensive property.
Harcourts Gold salesperson
Cameron Bailey said not only is
the property at 8 Wood Lane, in
Fendalton, the city’s best house,
but it is also on the best site and
best street.
The city’s house price record
currently stands at $8 million,
for a property on Wairarapa Tce,
in Merivale, which sold in 2021.
But the character-inspired fivebedroom,
five-bathroom home at
Wood Lane has the city’s secondhighest
RV at $8.34m and could
break the $10m mark.
The owners,
Bill and Mrrietta
Horncastle, built
the Wood Lane
property 12
years ago after
being drawn
Cameron
to the 3338sqm
park-like gardens
surrounded
Bailey
by a river boundary, just 200
metres from Hagley Park.
The couple told Stuff in 2016
the established gardens and river
CHIC: The Fendalton property’s decor was inspired by family
trips to France.
gave it a country feel in the heart
of the city.
The original house, built for
English settler and the street’s
namesake William Derisley
Wood, had undergone multiple
extensions over the years and the
couple decided to build a new
home in its place.
But the discovery of two rooms
dating back to the original 1890s
home provided inspiration for
their new home, which was
rebuilt around them.
The home was designed with
the help of architect Tim Devine
and includes period features such
as high studs, skirting boards,
architraves, cornices and doors.
“It’s essentially a modern home
you are buying. It’s got all the
creature comforts of a modern
home – it’s wonderful,” said
Bailey.
He said the home would attract
people who wanted privacy
and aspect on a north-facing site.
When asked if it could break
the city’s price record, he said
“undoubtedly”.
“You feel like you’re in your
own botanical gardens. It’s a big
home so it would suit a family,
but I could also see a retired
couple in there just enjoying the
land, the garden and the aspect.
I just think it’s such a unique
property that if you can afford it,
why wouldn’t you buy it?”
It also has a pool, tennis court
and pizza oven.
TWO Christchurch companies
have been fined $270,000 and
ordered to pay $130,000 in
reparation after a trailer came
off a work van and smashed
into another vehicle, killing an
Akaroa boat captain.
Julian Bruins Yates, 52, a skipper
for Black Cat Cruises, died
on October 23, 2020 in a threevehicle
crash on Weka Pass Rd in
Hurunui.
On Tuesday, Ultimate Design
and Renovation Ltd, which
owned the A-frame trailer and
tow vehicle, and its operational
arm ABC Aluminium Ltd were
sentenced in the district court.
Both businesses were charged
under the Health and Safety at
Work Act for health and safety
failures.
A WorkSafe investigation
found the locking handle on
the trailer was not engaged, and
the trailer’s safety chain was not
connected to the vehicle.
“These are routine checks that
must be done when towing a
trailer. If not, the consequences
can be catastrophic,” said Work-
Safe’s head of specialist interventions,
Dr Catherine Gardner.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Both companies did not have
systems to ensure vehicles were
in good working order, or systems
to ensure drivers visually
checked their vehicles before use.
WorkSafe also found staff had
inadequate information, training,
instruction, supervision,
and experience to safely use the
company vehicles and trailers.
“It’s not enough to just have
your workers sign a vehicle
policy. Businesses need to ensure
drivers are competent to safely
use a vehicle, especially one that
is being towed,” said Gardner.
“Julian Bruins Yates was a
father of two who lost his life
through no fault of his own.
Any business with a vehicle fleet
should heed the lessons of this
tragedy because it was entirely
preventable.”
NEWS 9
Companies fined after skipper killed in crash
Black Cat Cruises chief executive
Paul Milligan told the NZ
Herald after the tragedy his staff
had been left devastated.
“Julian was a colourful character,
he had been a part of the
Black Cat team for 10 years.”
Yates had been the “face and
voice” of the company’s Akaroa
Harbour cruise since 2011. Being
out on the water in nature was
“his happy place”, said Milligan.
He estimated about 100,000
guests over the past decade had
been on a cruise with Yates.
DNA found on milk drink left at burglary scene
• By Daniel Alvey
A DNA SAMPLE has been taken
from a milk drink container
and could potentially lead to
an arrest in two high-profile
burglaries.
The strawberry-flavoured
Up&Go container which was
found by the victim of the Burnham
break-in in March was sent
for forensic testing.
The Burnham homeowner
surprised the offender in his
house. The burglar knocked him
over as he ran from the house.
He left in a white Mercedes
Sprinter camper van.
The victim told Star Media
police have a sample from the
container.
“They did get some DNA off
the container off it, but they
can’t tell me anything more,” the
victim said.
The suspect, who is believed
to be a well-known burglar,
has been spoken to by police
but denies any involvement.
The distinctive white van used
in the two burglaries was also
used in a burglary in Tai Tapu
on December 26, Boxing Day,
and has often been seen parked
up at a Woolston social housing
complex.
Julian Bruins Yates, 52, died
in 2020 in a three-vehicle
crash on Weka Pass Rd.
Police would not say if the
sample had matched any held
on its database, or if anyone had
been brought in for questioning.
A spokesperson only said
inquiries were ongoing.
In the Tai Tapu burglary, the
homeowner found an axe had
been left at the scene when
he returned home to find his
house had been broken into.
His home security camera
captured the distinctive van
leaving his property. A car
was also stolen, which was
captured being driven off,
meaning there was more than
one offender at this burglary.
COMMUNITY fundraising efforts have
raised more than $25,000 to restore the
quake-damaged Mona Vale bathhouse.
The historic building suffered damage
in the February 22, 2011 earthquakes and
while some funding is set aside in the
Long Term Plan, work was deferred until
2029 due to budget constraints.
Earlier in the year, the Friends of the
Christchurch Botanic Gardens committee
began a fundraising campaign with a
very successful Edwardian garden party
attended by the mayor, mayoress, several
city councillors, MPs and members of the
public who dressed up for the occasion.
“The Edwardian-themed party helped
raise funds for the restoration and allowed
the Friends to donate $25,000,”
said Mona Vale subcommittee chair and
event organiser Jeanette Christensen.
“We’re a group who are passionate
about the gardens, particularly the educational
‘botanic’ side.”
Friends of the Gardens chair Jane
Cowan-Harris said the charitable organisation
support staff wherever needed
and take an ambassador role to share the
gardens with visitors – whether local or
international.
“Having already been delayed in
restoration, we were keen to support this
project to open this beautiful building
back up to visitors,” she said.
The bathhouse building will be used to
house a semi-tropical collection of plants,
and will become a public venue for small
events. The restoration of the building is
the final project to be completed at Mona
Vale.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have
such great support from the Friends to
work towards completion of this special
historic building,” said city council parks
programmes and partnerships manager
Roslyn Kerr.
“The generous donation from the
Friends will help get this restoration of
the iconic bathhouse underway – and
this is just one example of the incredible
work they do in supporting the gardens
and Mona Vale in a range of ways.”
The Friends invite anyone interested in
joining to support the gardens to come
along to an open day at the kiosk from
10am to 4pm on October 29. The day
will be an opportunity to learn more
about the work the Friends do within the
gardens and Mona Vale, discover what’s
involved in training as a garden guide,
and join as a volunteer.
Donations towards the restoration of
the bathhouse are still welcomed by the
Friends and can be donated online –
fought off three teenagers who
were trying to rob her while one
pointed an imitation pistol at her
head, and another stabbed her in
the leg during a drug deal gone
wrong.
While the woman believed the
pistol pointed at her was real,
her first instinct was to lunge for
it, as protective instincts kicked
in with her baby’s safety at the
forefront of her mind.
“I think if I wasn’t pregnant to
be honest it wouldn’t have been
much of a fight, it was more me
fighting for my baby to be honest,”
she told the New Zealand
Herald.
Flynn James Glintmeyer,
18, admitted setting up fake
online profiles to organise cannabis
deals before he and his
associates, armed with weapons,
attacked their victims including
stabbing the woman who was
nine months pregnant.
Glintmeyer was remanded in
custody at a youth facility until
his sentencing on February 2.
Glintmeyer, whose name
suppression has now lapsed,
appeared at the High Court at
Christchurch where he pleaded
guilty to one charge of wounding
with intent to cause grievous
bodily harm and two charges of
aggravated robbery.
The summary of facts stated
Glintmeyer and his four associates,
who all have name
suppression, were at an address
in Bryndwr.
Glintmeyer used a fake Facebook
profile called “Cody Flyer”
to organise a cannabis deal with
the 28-year-old woman.
He instructed her to park her
car on the side of the road in
Bryndwr. She arrived at about
11pm.
The woman, who didn’t want
to be named, admitted having
a “weird feeling” as soon as she
pulled up to the agreed meeting
spot, as the person was taking
“so long” to meet her.
Glintmeyer, who was armed
with a knife, and his three associates,
one of whom was armed
with an imitation Glock pistol,
approached her car wearing full
face masks.
One teenager spoke to the
woman from the driver’s side of
the car and demanded she hand
over her car keys and money,
while the teenager holding the
imitation pistol got into the passenger
seat and pointed the pistol
at the woman.
The woman described hearing
the gun first before it was
pointed at her head.
“I don’t know why but I
grabbed it. I was trying to pull it
away,” she said.
She said two teenagers were
at the driver’s side trying to “rip
me out” of the car while others
yelled to grab her car keys.
The teenager holding the imitation
pistol struck the woman
in the head with the pistol before
stealing a $20 note and some
cannabis from her.
One of the offenders reached
through the car window and
pulled the keys out of the ignition,
causing the alarm to go off.
Glintmeyer then approached
the car and stabbed the woman
in her right thigh, causing a deep
wound.
The woman admitted she
hadn’t even realised she had been
stabbed at the time.
“I remember trying to fight
them off and I felt like he had
punched me in the leg.
I was more trying to protect
my tummy because I was two
weeks away from giving birth,”
she said.
The woman said she thinks the
teenagers got scared when the
car alarm went off and they ran
away.
She climbed out of the car to
grab her keys which had been
dropped on the road. It wasn’t
until she stood up and felt blood
trickling down her leg that she
saw what had happened.
Religious upbringing linked to child
exploitation and secret cameras
• By Emily Moorhouse
A MAN who was taught all
things sexual were “the work of
the devil” and had an “oppressive
religious upbringing” went on
to install cameras in a home to
secretly film a young woman
showering.
The court heard Giane Patrick
Woods was the “product of an
oppressive faith” that linked to
his offending, including having
more than 40,000 images and
videos of child exploitation
material.
The 55-year-old was sentenced
to three years jail on eight charges
of making an intimate visual
recording and two of possessing
an objectionable publication.
One of the possession charges
was representative, meaning it
happened more than once.
According to the summary
of facts, Woods made internet
searches in April 2020 on “how
to install a hidden camera”.
He also searched for cameras
online. He then chipped away
at a ceiling board and installed
a small camera, which was used
to secretly film into a woman’s
bedroom.
Two months later the woman
PHOTO: GETTY
discovered the camera and told
Woods about it. He said it must
have been installed by the previous
tenants and took the camera
out but kept it.
On eight occasions, between
December 2021 and January
2022, Woods accessed the ceiling
space and filmed the woman in
the shower, taking just under 40
minutes worth of footage in total
and sometimes screenshotting
images.
Woods also replaced the blue
shower curtain with a clear glass
panel.
In March 2022 police searched
Woods’ property and seized his
electronic devices.
They found an open laptop
with a folder of child exploitation
material. Police seized the laptop,
along with two others, a smartphone,
a tablet, a hard drive, two
cameras and two USB sticks.
In total, more than 40,000 files
were classified as objectionable
publications with child exploitation
material ranging from
categories A, B and C.
Further searches also revealed
a 57-minute video involving
bestiality.
The court heard the woman
felt incredibly stressed and betrayed
by Woods’ offending.
Woods’ lawyer James Rapley
KC said reports showed his client’s
“rigid and intense religious
upbringing” had a link with his
offending.
The court heard Woods was
immersed in the Jehovah’s Witness
religious group when he was
eight but was shunned from the
group at 16. Woods joined the
group again a few years later and
married.
Rapley said Woods was exposed
to “distorted thinking”
around sexual experiences and
while the offending was “abhorrent”,
he asked the judge to consider
Wood’s strict upbringing
when sentencing him.
He added Woods hadn’t appeared
before the courts previously
and he engaged well in the
pre-sentence process, showing
remorse and insight into his offending.
Judge Gerard Lynch said
reports provided to the court
stated Woods’ “oppressive”
upbringing taught him that “all
things sexual were evil and the
work of the devil”. The report
stated there was a link to Woods’
upbringing and the offending.
Woods had expressed relief at
This report was produced by Open
Justice – Te Pātītī, a Public
Interest Journalism initiative
funded by NZ on Air
finally being able to talk about
his upbringing and the secrecy of
sexual activity that was enforced.
Judge Lynch said not everyone
who had experienced an oppressive
faith went on to offend in
this way but for some, it “arguably
makes them more susceptible”
to offend in this “disturbing
way”.
Woods had made good
progress in applying himself
through counselling sessions and
had shown the motivation and
capacity to address his offending.
Judge Lynch said the aggravating
features of Woods’ offending
were the breach of trust, the
victim’s vulnerability, premeditation,
effects on the victim and
the exploitation of very young
children, which he described as
“vile”.
He gave Woods discounts for
his remorse and commitment
to rehabilitation, his personal
circumstances, the trauma associated
with his childhood and
his previous good character.
COURT 15
Patched Mongols MC member denied
appeal following fatal gangpad bashing
• By Hazel Osborne
A PATCHED Mongols MC
member involved in a gang-pad
killing on New Year’s Eve has
been denied an appeal on his
sentence and conviction for his
part in the fatal beating.
Lyndon Paul Sheed was found
guilty last year of manslaughter
after standing trial for the killing
of Kane Wayman, who was
beaten at the Mongols MC gangpad
and died on New Year’s Day,
2021.
Sheed was initially charged
with murder, but found guilty
of manslaughter and later sentenced
in the High Court to five
years and six months imprisonment.
He has since been denied his
appeal against conviction and
sentence, with the Court of
Appeal stating in their recently
released decision they did not
accept the grounds put forward
by the convicted killer.
The jury found Sheed had
administered the fatal blow to
Wayman’s head that night when
he was attacked for allegedly
disrespecting people at the party
and acting out.
Wayman, who was 46 at the
APPEAL: Lyndon Sheed (centre) during his trial in the High
Court.
PHOTO: KURT BAYER
time, had been attacked by three
men, including Sheed, after he
was “ejected” from the gangpad.
He was punched and kicked,
even when he lay defenceless on
the ground.
He was driven to the hospital
by a woman he had been seeing.
Battered and badly injured he
was laid out on the back seat of a
car and driven to Christchurch
hospital where he was pronounced
dead.
His body showed signs of an
assault, including facial, head
and neck injuries and a pathologist
found his cause of death to
be blunt head trauma and neck
compression injuries on the
background of heart problems
and methamphetamine use.
“In (the pathologist’s) opinion,
the degree of post-mortem
changes suggested he was dead
or actively dying before he was
placed in the car,” the decision
said.
The woman who drove him,
Penny Poihipi, said Sheed had
come to the driver’s window before
leaving for the hospital and
said “(you) f******* hear nothing,
you f****** see nothing. Did you
hear?”
Poihipi was a key witness
in the trial, and had identified
Sheed, who she had slept with
that night, as the man who administered
a “king hit”.
Sheed’s daughter Liz and Mongols
prospect Mitchell Carston
also who stood trial for Wayman’s
death, and were acquitted
of murder at the trial last year.
Sheed’s lawyer Len Andersen
KC put forward three grounds
when appealing the 2022 conviction
at a hearing in August this
year.
Andersen argued there was
no admissible identification of
Sheed, Poihipi’s account of the
fatal punch was not reliable, and
the evidence did not prove the
blow caused the man’s death.
A reduction in his sentence
of five years and six months
was also sought by Andersen,
claiming the time given should
have been no more than four
years and in line with other “one
punch” manslaughter cases.
Andersen said an allowance
should have been made for
“personal mitigating factors”,
including learning difficulties,
familial disconnection and poor
role-modelling in early life.
“We do not accept these submissions,”
the court said in the
decision.
They went on to state they were
not persuaded the sentencing
judge was wrong when denying
discounts for personal mitigating
factors, describing the connection
between that and his offending
as “weak”.
“The (cultural) report states
that Mr Sheed attributes the
offending to intoxication at the
time and his responsibility as the
gang member ‘on watch’ to ‘sort
it out’. However, his intoxication
at the time is not a mitigating
factor,” the decision said.
Sheed joined the Mongols in
2012. Wayman was not connected
to the gang and, according
to the decision, may have
met Sheed just one time before
he died.
ATTACKED: Kane Wayman
died on January 1, 2021.
Orca siblings return to Akaroa
• By Sasha Watson
ORCA SIBLINGS Prop and
Danny have made their annual
return to Akaroa.
They were spotted by Black Cat
Cruises last week and were the
first orcas of the season to visit
the harbour.
“While orcas usually turn
up around this time of year,
October to December, the first
sightings are always exciting,”
said Black Cat chief executive
Paul Milligan.
“Initially we thought these two
were an unknown mother orca
and her calf, and noticed the calf
looked like it had some damage
just behind its dorsal fin – most
likely a propeller strike which is
always sad to see,” he said.
“The concern for the smaller
orca was quickly abolished after
a few local orca experts said the
orcas were the well-known Prop
and Danny.”
Orca Research Trust and
Whale Rescue founder Dr Ingrid
Visser said in Guide to the New
Zealand Orca, the two orcas
were believed to be brother and
sister.
Visser has been documenting
orca since 1995 and has records
of Prop going back to 1982.
Prop was ‘readily recognisable’
with distinctive damage to her
WHALE-COME BACK: Prop and Danny were the first orcas of the season to visit the Akaroa Harbour waters.
dorsolumbar region from being
run over by a boat when she was
‘reasonably young’.
“The damage was so significant
that it stunted her growth.
Her dorsal fin is about a third
smaller than an orca of a similar
age.”
Prop has two visible deep V-
shaped cuts along her spine and
a third closer to the tail.
Department of Conversation
marine technical advisor Mike
Ogle said he hoped people would
respect the orca and give them
the space they need.
“This includes travelling no
faster than ‘no wake’ speed
within 300m of marine mammals,
not circling or cutting off
the path of any animals, and
approaching from a direction
that’s parallel and to the rear of
the animals,” he said.
“For whales, keep at least 50m
away, or 200m for baleen or
sperm whales with a calf.”
Said Milligan: “While Prop
and Danny are well-known, this
should still be a warning to do
what you can to maintain their
safety.
“Do not go searching for
orcas, but if you do happen
to spot one, be mindful and
conscious.”
Covid still biggest infectious
Unless someone high
profile gets it, most
of us aren’t thinking
about the dangers of
catching Covid-19 now.
We should be – it’s
our country’s biggest
infectious disease killer,
twice as deadly as
influenza. Tom Kitchin
reports
EVERY WEEK we see
thousands of cases, hundreds
lying in hospital beds, and
around 20 deaths.
Sorry to say it, but Covid is
still alive and kicking.
“It’s a bit like an unwelcome
guest that no one wants to talk
about, but it hasn’t gone away,
that’s for sure,’’ said Otago
University
epidemiologist
professor
Michael Baker.
“It’s our
number one
infectious
disease threat
Michael
Baker
. . . it’s really
displaced
influenza as our
biggest single infectious disease
killer.”
And Baker warns the number
of reported cases are probably
well behind what’s actually out
there.
“(There are) 3,500 or so
reported cases every week, but
we know that will be at best
50 per cent of the cases in the
community . . . maybe less than
that . . . so we’re still looking at
about 10,000 cases probably a
week at least.”
Baker said reporting
has dropped off for several
reasons, such as there no longer
being mandatory self-isolation
and the Covid leave support
scheme ending, which helped
pay employees who had to
isolate.
Wastewater results are
Professor
Michael
being
up to
date with
vaccines,
selfisolating
and
wearing
masks
are all still
important
actions to
take.
“It’s our number one infectious disease threat . . . it’s
really displaced influenza as our biggest single infectious
disease killer.” – Professor Michael Baker
showing an interesting, if not
slightly concerning, trend.
“We’re seeing a rise at the
moment, a relatively small
rise, in the detection of this
virus in wastewater, unlike the
continuing decline we’re seeing
in self-reported cases, and
this does seem to date to the
period when we removed the
subsidy for self-isolation, and
that coincided with when
we removed mandatory selfisolation.”
Baker says
the virus
hasn’t stopped
evolving. He led
the publication
of a recent
paper in the
New Zealand
Helen
Petousis-
Harris
Medical Journal,
co-authored
by 16 academic
experts, which
calls for careful mitigation
strategies.
“Mitigation is not a ‘donothing’
approach. You do a
selection of things to try and
minimise the harms caused by
an infection.”
He talks about being up-todate
with vaccinations, staying at
home and self-isolating if you’re
sick, and putting on masks in
crowded indoor environments
like public transport.
Auckland University associate
professor Helen Petousis-
disease, but not so much the
disease killer
IMMUNISE: Professor Helen Petousis-Harris says combination vaccines
are likely to start appearing in the next few years.
asymptomatic or mild infections.
“They started off with a hiss and roar
because they were quite well-matched to
those circulating variants,” she said.
“As that shifted, the ability to prevent
initial infection in the first place – that
was what you saw wane first, and then
the ability to prevent mild disease,
whereas you see that protection against
more severe disease holding.”
She says there’s a lot of work going on
to get better vaccine solutions.
“These are things like intranasal
vaccines – so vaccines you sniff – or skin
patches . . . you want them in your upper
respiratory tract to catch that virus as
soon as it appears. So we’re likely to
see that sort of thing coming along,
hopefully (in the) near rather than far
future now.
“And that of course has got that
spillover for other respiratory infections
as well. Covid’s not the only game in
town. Influenza causes us grief every
year, along with other respiratory
viruses.”
Petousis-Harris says there could
be combination vaccines – attacking
several viruses in one shot – in coming
years.
Bid to stop
NZDF noise
complaints
• By Daniel Alvey
THE NEW Zealand Defence Force is
having another shot at ensuring the
future of its West Melton rifle range.
NZDF has been trying for a number
of years to get a covenant placed on
properties near the range to stop noise
complaints, with an appeal on Selwyn’s
District Plan the latest attempt.
Each time it has tried, its submission
has been knocked back by residents in the
area.
The NZDF had submitted to the
District Plan, asking for the covenant to
be added, but the change was declined. It
has subsequently lodged an appeal with
the Environment Court.
The NZDF argues the range has been
operating legally since the 1940s, and is of
key importance.
Since 2009 the council has received
only one noise complaint from about the
rifle range, in 2020.
The NZDF is concerned without the
covenant an increase in complaints may
stop it from increasing the intensity and
frequency of activities.
Under Selwyn’s District Plan the NZDF
is required to have a noise management
plan; it argues if it is required to have an
NMP then it should also be protected
from complaints.
Adapting to sea level
rise: Feedback sought
THE CITY council and the
Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour
and Koukourarata Port Levy
Coastal Panel are seeking
feedback on draft adaptation
pathways for Allandale,
Koukourarata Port Levy, Purau,
Teddington, Charteris Bay and
Rāpaki.
The city council will be
holding online webinars in the
coming weeks for people to learn
more and ask questions about
the proposals. People can give
feedback on them until December
10.
City council team leader for
coastal hazards adaptation planning
Jane Morgan said it is important
the coastal panel hears
from as many people as possible.
“The feedback we receive from
this engagement will help our
coastal panel of community
and runanga representatives
work out which combination of
options to put forward to councillors
as the preferred pathway
for each community once the
options have been developed in
greater detail next year.
“If approved, these pathways
will guide the management of
public facilities and infrastructure,
like roads, reserves and
jetties, over the coming decades
– so it’s important people spread
the word and let us know what
they think.”
Morgan said adaptation
pathways for communities could
adopt a “hold the line” approach,
where at-risk public assets were
defended by options such as
flood-proofing, but this approach
may only work for so long.
“Alternatively, we could work
with nature and retreat assets
further inland, which costs more
at the outset but reduces the
overall risk.
“Communities will also need
to be better prepared to live with
the impacts of climate change,
with public facilities, like walkways
and roads, being closed
more frequently in the future
as we experience more storm
events, for example.
“There’s also no guarantee at
this stage that existing public
facilities and assets will be maintained
and available into the
future. The closure, removal or
retreat of different assets are options
that may be considered in
response to changing conditions
and needs across the district.
“We know that sea levels are
rising in response to climate
change. Locally, they’ve risen by
more than 10cm over the last 15
years in Whakaraupō Lyttelton
Harbour, and we expect to see
a further 14-23cm by 2050, and
between 38cm and 1m by 2100.”
Kinetic fleet to grow
MORE THAN a quarter
of Kinetic’s Go Bus fleet in
Christchurch will soon be
electric, with confirmation 10
more zero-emission buses are
bound for the city next year.
The company will introduce
the 10 electric buses across
a number of local routes, to
replace older diesel buses and
further reduce the emissions
from its Christchurch bus
services.
The introduction of these
new electric buses is made
possible by Environment
Canterbury being awarded
additional funding from Waka
Kotahi to help decarbonise the
urban Metro fleet.
The additional 10 electric
buses will see Kinetic grow its
city fleet to 51 battery electric
vehicles, which represents more
than 25 per cent of its local
fleet.
“It’s a great
step towards
achieving our
goal of having
a 100 per cent
zero emission
fleet across
Calum
New Zealand
and Australia
by 2035,” said
Kinetic NZ managing director
Calum Haslop.
“Reducing our carbon
ELECTRIC: Ten more zero-emission buses will be
introduced into the circuit next year.
footprint is a priority at Kinetic
and so far this year, our 41
electric buses in Christchurch
alone have saved over 2 million
tonnes of CO2 emissions.
“We are working with other
councils around the country
to further leverage this special
Waka Kotahi funding, so expect
to see more electric buses on
the road across New Zealand.”
ECan chair Peter Scott said
he is delighted to have secured
the funding for Christchurch.
“This is a continuation of
the work we have already been
doing in this space – currently
20 per cent of our fleet is zero
emissions,” he said.
The new buses can be
expected on Canterbury roads
in 2024.
Kinetic is the largest operator
of electric buses in New
Zealand, with over 200 zero
emission vehicles powered
by eight electric depots
across Auckland, Tauranga,
Christchurch and Wellington,
in partnership with local
regional councils.
Globally, Kinetic’s electric
bus fleet is expected to grow to
1,000 this year with operations
in Australia, the UK, Europe
and Singapore. The company
is aiming to achieve net zero
emissions by 2035, which
includes a 100 per cent
electric fleet.
New solution for a better
nights sleep & improved health!
Deep regenerative sleep is so important
to feeling and performing our best. A
lack of or poor-quality sleep is associated
with an increased risk for many chronic
diseases, including obesity, type 2
diabetes, heart disease, depression, and
many more. Unfortunately, many adults
report occasional bouts of insomnia,
with one in three saying they suffer from
sleeplessness or disturbed sleep on a
more chronic basis, to the point that it
regularly impairs daytime functioning.
The good news is that an inexpensive,
naturally occurring amino acid known as
glycine has been clinically researched in
Japan and shown to be highly beneficial
in supporting healthy sleep. Subjects
who were given three grams of glycine
one hour before bedtime fell asleep much
sooner as well as exhibited brainwave
patterns associated with deep sleep
compared to control subjects who did
not supplement. On waking, the subjects
who took the glycine woke reporting
being refreshed with no indication that
glycine produced a “morning hangover”
or any foggy feeling common with
those who use prescription sleeping
medication.
Glycine is known to accumulate in the
pineal gland, where it is believed to play
an important role in “disconnecting” the
brain from the body during REM (rapid
eye movement) sleep cycles. Glycine also
supports healthy growth hormone (GH)
secretion that is associated with strength,
good health, and vitality, whereas low
NIGHTS SLEEP?
Sleep is so important to feeling and performing our best. Long
term poor quality sleep is associated with many chronic diseases
and may even reduce our life span. New clinical research has
found a naturally occurring amino acid known as glycine may
restore a good night’s sleep. Japanese researchers found
patients taking glycine fell asleep much sooner and exhibited
brainwave patterns associated with deep sleep. On waking
the patients woke refreshed, clear minded and energetic.
Emotional win for Hendry
MICHAEL HENDRY won the
DVS Clearwater Open on his
44th birthday, becoming the
winningest player on the Jennian
Homes Charles Tour.
The victory was emotional
for the 2017 New Zealand Open
champion, who didn’t know if he
would play another competitive
round following his leukaemia
diagnosis in April.
After overcoming his fair share
of challenges over the past six
months, he said he couldn’t put
the victory into words.
“Obviously, the trials and
tribulations that I’ve been
through this year I’ve been
pushing hard to get back to
the game, and to do this in my
second major tournament back
is pretty surreal to be honest. I’m
blown away.
“Along with the All Blacks
win, it’s been a good day so far,”
he said on Sunday.
Hendry did it the hard way,
winning on the fourth playoff
hole during a weather-affected
event that was reduced to
36-holes after play was abandoned
due to high winds on
Saturday.
He began the final day
shootout in a tie for the lead with
Josh Geary and Jordan Pruden at
four-under-par, but it didn’t take
him long to ascend to the top of
the leaderboard on his own. He
made a birdie on the second and
added further birdies at five and
six, following a bogey at four.
However, bogeys at eight and
nine brought him back to the
chasing pack, and he went into
the final nine tied with Geary,
with the in-form left-hander
Tyler Hodge a further shot
behind.
Both he and Geary birdied the
10th before the gale force winds
returned. They played the closing
holes in three-over-par, finishing
tied with Hodge, Dongwoo
Kang, and Auckland amateur
Jared Edwards.
All five players parred the 18th,
the first playoff hole before they
started to drop off one by one.
Kang was the first to go with a
bogey on the second extra hole
before Geary was dropped as
Hendry, Edwards, and Hodge
birdied the third.
Hendry finally sealed the
dramatic win with a par on the
fourth extra hole when all his
emotions came out.
He had plenty of memories to
call upon to get the job done.
“I’ve been in this situation a
few times before. With five guys
in the playoff, I knew I was
going to have to make a birdie
at some stage. I just thought I
needed to play as aggressively as
I did in regulation. With
the wind off the right on 18, it
set up pretty well for me; I just
stepped up and piped driver a
few times.
“It’s probably the best I played
all week to be honest.”
He now holds nine Jennian
Homes Charles Tour titles, the
most of any player. He says
it’s one of his proudest golfing
achievements.
“Having these little records
and things, I’m sure someone
will come along and beat them
– Josh is playing so well at the
moment and will probably win
and tie it again next week.
“It means a lot. These records
in the New Zealand golfing scene
mean a lot. I care about how
I’m perceived as a golfer in New
Zealand. Hopefully, I can add to
that now that I hold this record;
it’s really satisfying.”
He is now focusing on his
next mission the Taranaki Open
– which starts tomorrow – in
search of his 10th title.
Jared Edwards won the Lamb
& Hayward Cup for finishing as
the low amateur.
PGA of New Zealand member
Yoon Kyung Kim finished as the
low woman at seven-over.
Teenage champion sets sights
on professional career pathway
CANTERBURY tennis star
Diego Quispe-Kim is making
the most of his last few months
in junior ranks, winning all
three of International Tennis
Federation tournaments in New
Zealand in the past month.
Quispe-Kim, 17, won the
final of the October J100 ITF
tournament at Wilding Park,
easing through the early rounds
before beating Lev Gorb in
the final 6-1 6-0. This followed
wins in the ITF30 Northern
and ITF30 Auckland
tournaments.
This week he is back on court
with his father and coach, Juan
Quispe-Chavez, coaching and
inspiring juniors at the Shirley
Tennis Club as well as training
for the New Zealand 18s
nationals which will be played in
Christchurch in December – his
last tournament as a junior.
His father is from Peru where
he worked as a psychologist
while his mother is from South
Korea. The couple met when
Juan was studying psychology at
PARTNERSHIP: Diego Quispe-Kim has been coached by
his father Juan Quispe-Chavez since he was three.
Canterbury University.
Born in Christchurch, Quispe-
Kim has spent much of his life
in the city, apart from two years
studying at St Kentigern College
in Auckland when his father was
the college’s tennis coach.
Quispe-Kim has been coached
by his father since he first picked
up a racket as a three-year old.
“In fact, I think he likes me
more as a coach than a dad. I
know him so well as a player and
what he needs to thrive,” Quispe-
Chavez said.
“I loved football and started
coaching him in that sport.
When a friend of mine suggested
he try tennis, he did, liked it,
and soon we were playing more
tennis than football.”
Quispe-Kim who was soon
beating players twice his age,
shares his father’s passion for
sport.
“Success in any sport is built
on both passion and discipline,”
Quispe-Chavez said.
“ As far as tennis goes, Diego
has the attributes needed to
succeed. He enjoys playing and
is very disciplined – from the
way he trains to what he eats. For
example, I don’t think he would
ever have had a soft drink. “
The talented left-hander
has won four national titles at
12s, 14s, 16s and 18s as well as
enjoying success in international
junior events in both Australia
and Fiji. He now has 11
international ITF singles titles
and three ITF double titles to his
credit, which saw him reach a
career high world junior ranking
of 70 in January 2023. He
played in the Australian Open
juniors in January this year,
but unfortunately, he suffered
an untimely injury in the first
match of the tournament and age
will rule him out of competing
in the junior event of the Grand
Slam next January.
Diego Quispe-Kim is positive
about his future in the sport and
is working to a plan that includes
entering International Futures
events, which he hopes will be
his pathway to a professional
tennis career.
He is concentrating on
competition and success close
to home, given the high cost of
competing overseas.
“We are definitely exploring
ways of getting a sponsorship
so he can compete on the
international stage. His results
when he is injury-free and on
all surfaces including grass
and clay show he deserves the
opportunity,” Juan Quispe-
Chavez said.

Harness racing icon ‘Dobbie’ finds
• By Barry Lichter
IAN DOBSON, one of harness
racing’s most successful owners
of all time, died on Monday
morning – on his 90th birthday.
Dobson, whose name is synonymous
with the champion pacer
Christan Cullen, started winning
races in 1986 but, incredibly, was
only now enjoying the best run
of his life.
In a February interview before
cleaning up at the annual harness
racing awards, Dobson said
“the horses keep me going. I’m
having a bit of fun and I don’t
think I’ve ever had such a good
run.”
Dobson was a notable absentee
at Addington last Friday when
his three superstars Akuta, Don’t
Stop Dreaming and Muscle
Mountain went within a whisker
of repeating their unmatched
treble of last December when, in
a golden 90 minutes, they bagged
three Group I races, the $250,000
New Zealand Derby, the
$100,000 Ace Of
Spades and the
$86,500 Trotting
Free-for-all.
Long time
close friend Noel
Kennard said
Noel
Kennard
“Dobbie” always
tried to be on
course but in the
last month his health had gradually
slipped.
“I went in to the rest home
with his son Stuart to watch the
races with him but for the first
time he wasn’t with it at all.
“Up ’til about a month ago
he could walk unaided and his
memory was brilliant. If we
talked horses or money he knew
exactly what you were saying.”
Dobson’s passing brings to a
close one of the most spectacular
ownership chapters in harness
racing – he won 385 races in
New Zealand alone, with 73 individual
winners, including 31 at
the very highest Group I level.
But while his newest trotting
sensation Muscle Mountain has
been the most prolific, with 29
wins, Dobson still rates Christian
Cullen as his number one
champion.
“Christian Cullen was my best
horse,” Dobson said in February.
“I still own him – he’s alive
and well at the age of 28, at the
best old people’s home in New
Zealand, Dancingonmoonlight
Farm.”
Dobson’s first foray into
ownership in 1984 wasn’t so
successful. He shared in a mare
called Jam Cover – named after a
business he had which made jam
WINNING TEAM: Ian Dobson with, from
left, his daughter Lynne, partner Janice, and
Muscle Mountain’s trainers, Nina and Greg
Hope.
covers – who placed three times
from 14 starts.
But he had been racing horses
with some success for 10 years
– his first winner was Lord
Christopher at Hutt Park on
September 2, 1986 – before Cullen
came along, winning his first
race on November 22, 1996 at
Addington.
By the time Cullen retired in
June 2000, with recurrent leg
problems, he had captured everyone’s
hearts with his arrogant
pacing style, winning some of
the most coveted prizes in harness
racing, including the New
Zealand Cup, Auckland Cup and
Miracle Mile.
When he left trainer Brian
O’Meara’s stable he became the
country’s champion sire, giving
Dobson more prizes than he
could fit in his trophy cabinets.
Kennard recalls how Dobson
prized the collection so much,
he even contradicted the red
sticker ban on his Redcliffs home
to rescue the collection after
the earthquake demolished his
house in 2011.
But among the racing trophies
were also plenty of golfing
memorabilia as Dobson for
many years was a scratch golfer,
Kennard said.
“After one tournament he won,
he was flown to Germany to pick
up his prize, a Mercedes car.
“Golf meant a lot to him.
He played and beat Michael
Campbell at Kauri Cliffs one
year.”
Dobson went on to breed and
race a horse with Campbell who,
named Cambo, won first-up at
Timaru in September 2007.
“He also caddied for Gary
Player and I remember Dobbie
telling me the story about how
Player asked him for a club
and Dobbie said, ‘No, that’s the
wrong one. Trust me, I know’. He
was proven right.”
Dobson, a good all round
sportsman, proved a generous
benefactor for golf, paying for an
extension to the Christchurch
Golf Club and funding initiatives
to help juniors progress up the
ranks.
Dobson didn’t always have
money. He came from very
humble beginnings, growing up
in the Depression, biking to work
where he earned 10 bob a week as
a plumber.
Dobson lived on 10 per cent
of his income, saving the rest,
and eventually set up his own
business, before moving into
buying real estate.
“On the one hand he was very
scrupulous and on the other
incredibly generous with his
passions.”
Kennard admired Dobson
for his unrelenting calmness in
racing, which routinely threw up
setbacks.
“When his horses lost, not
once did I ever hear him criticise
BEST:
the 1998
New Zealand
Trotting Cup.
SPORTSMAN: Dobson was also a keen golfer, caddying for Gary Player (left) and once
beating champion golfer Michael Campbell, who raced Cambo with Ian Dobson.
the driver. And when Muscle
Mountain got taken out at
the start (badly checked) at
Addington recently he copped it
on the chin, saying it was just one
of those things.”
Dobson took the same c’est la
vie approach early on to Muscle
Mountain whom he bred and put
through the ring as a yearling,
only to pass him in for $40,000.
“He wasn’t prepared to let him
go for that. If the horse was no
good and he ended up losing, so
be it.”
Muscle Mountain was clearly
the best of the 10 trotters Dobson
raced, giving him his first Group
I win as a breeder when he took
the NZ Trotting Championship
in April 2021.
Dobson raced 10 trotters who
collectively won 64 races but
most of his success came with
pacers.
His first Group I win as
an owner came in 2009 with
Joyfuljoy and, while he enjoyed
scores of winners in the
intervening years, he had to wait
until April 2021 for the next one.
Dobson is survived by
his partner Janice, son
Stuart, daughter Lynne, four
grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.
Lynne Dobson said she will
remember her dad as a great
father and family man.
“We didn’t have a lot of money
in those days – there were no
huge family holidays – but we’d
go away a lot to the West Coast
and the country race meetings.
“He was quite hard on me but
very fair and brought us up to
show respect.
“I remember him saying: ‘What
you do in life is look after your
family and work hard’, which I’ve
taken on board.”
GARDENING
Discover
‘skunk
cabbage’
PERFECT FOR brightening pond
edges, lysichiton americanus is
native to parts of northwestern
America, and thrives in boggy areas,
growing in marshes, swamps
and forested wetlands.
The unfortunate, but more
familiar, common name “skunk
cabbage” refers to its musty smell;
the plant uses its smell to attract
pollinators such as flies and
beetles.
This herbaceous perennial
forms a basal rosette of large
glossy leaves growing up to 1.5m
in length. The spadix, which is
covered in small greenish-yellow
flowers in the right conditions,
can also reach over 1m in height
and is surrounded by a bright
vibrant yellow spathe.
Adult plants take about five
years to seed. You can propagate
by division or from its berry-like
fruit, however these will require
stratification – a technique to
artificially create cool winter
conditions so once sown, the seed
thinks it is spring. Alternatively,
if left alone, this slow-spreading
plant propagates itself by fallen
seed from the wilting spadix.
–ODT
OCTOBER IS an important
month in the garden calendar.
Seeds sown this month pop up
quickly and there are usually few
checks to growth during the early
summer months.
The ideal time to sow seeds is
as soon as the soil is fit to work
after rain but in dry weather,
water the ground well the day
before sowing.
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Sowing the seeds of spring
Vegetables
To obtain successive crops
of peas, sow a quick-maturing
variety and a main crop now.
Novella will produce plump pods
in nine to 11 weeks from sowing.
Greenfeast takes 11 to 13 weeks
so, by sowing them at the same
time, the later crop is ready as
the first tails off.
Peas require only a little lime
and grow best where the summer
is not too hot or dry. Keep the
soil moist by working in plenty of
compost or well-rotted manure.
To offset dry, light soil, sow peas
in trenches of compost with a
layer of absorbent material, such
as peat or sphagnum moss, in the
bottom to hold moisture. Cover
the compost with a thin (5cm)
layer of ordinary soil and keep
the top of the trench 2cm to 5cm
below the surrounding ground.
Asparagus may still be planted.
Two- or three-year-old crowns,
looking rather like small octopuses,
can be bought from
garden centres and give faster
results than growing from seed.
The most important factor in
succeeding with this hardy
perennial vegetable is well-prepared
ground, rich in compost
and ideally with seaweed worked
into it. Allow 40cm between each
plant, place in position 10cm
below the ground, spreading the
roots as widely as possible, then
cover with fine soil. Avoid the
temptation to harvest in the first
year and the reward will be better
crops in the future.
Flowers
Narcissi and other bulbous
plants that have finished flowering
must be left for another
couple of months until their
leaves die away. Until that happens,
leaves are creating food for
the bulbs. If bulbs have to be removed
after flowering but before
the leaves have died down, lift
carefully with the leaves intact.
Lay bulbs in shallow trenches,
cover with soil and lift again
when the foliage has died away.
A widespread curse is the
narcissus fly, which looks like a
small bumble-bee and lays its
eggs in November at the base of
the foliage. The grub hatches and
burrows into the bulb, where it
grows to resemble a large maggot,
turning the centre of the
bulb into brown sludge. Covering
the bulbs after flowering with
fine shade cloth or pea straw
will keep out the flies but is not
a good look. Growing narcissi
in pots, then covering with pea
straw after flowering and putting
the pots out of sight under cover
can be a better option.
Some gardeners say a puff of
household fly spray in the centre
of the bulb helps deter the flies,
while an old English technique
is to place a mothball on top of
each bulb when planting new
bulbs, as the camphor smell
repels the grubs.
Alyssum makes a good edging
PHOTO: GETTY
to the mixed border or pathway.
It flourishes in well-limed soil
and self-seeds freely.
Fruit
Even in a small garden, some
fruit can be grown, notably
strawberries and gooseberries.
Strawberries can be grown in
a ceramic planter or used as a
border to a garden bed, while
gooseberries lend themselves to
being grown as standards in pots.
They also can be planted along
a wire or fence, a simple form of
espaliering that makes the fruit
easier to harvest.
approved before building commences.
Just as important as considering
the features for your home will be
your outdoor setting. Indoor/outdoor
requirements will influence your choice
of house design and how it will be sited of the section, which the developer will
