‘Sand art dissolves the 

chaos in my head’

NEW BRIGHTON artist 

Wayne Webb has had a long 

history of mental health battles. 

However, he has found an 

unusual outlet to overcome his 

struggles – using nature and a 

rake to make mandalas, tributes 

and messages in the sand. 

“So many people truly think 

the world would be better off 

without them, that they are 

alone,” said Webb. 

“I too was suicidal and using 

drugs and alcohol. It has been 

a journey but now, sand art 

has become my pub and my 

chemist.” 

Now, his work has been 

captured in a short video, 

A Gift to the Sea, which will 

be showcased in this year’s 

Aotearoa Mental Health Film 

Festival. 

A Gift to the Sea will be 

screened at Hoyts EntX on 

November 23, as part of nine 

short films to be showcased. 

The film can also be seen 

on the New Brighton Online 

website. 

Webb started sand art about 

three and a half years ago and 

since then, New Brighton beach 

has become a daily – sometimes 

twice daily – destination for 

him. 

“Sand art dissolves the chaos 

in my head. ‘Busy hands, settled 

brain’ is a saying I’ve stuck to,” 

he said. 

“It gives me a power. The 

beach is healing and cleansing, 

and art has the power not just 

to change my life, but others’ as 

well.” 

Webb was inspired by 

now-retired sand artist Peter 

Donnelly, who created on New 

Brighton’s shores from 1997 to 

2014, and Jeremy Lillico, who 

helped Webb create his first 

piece. 

“I want to reach as many 

people who feel alone as 

possible, and help get them to 

stay (living),” Webb said. 

The video was funded 

by ChristchurchNZ, Rata 

Foundation, and Lottery 

Community. It was produced 

by Jaunty Productions for New 

Brighton Online.

Bourne to lead: Young golfer’s win

FOURTEEN-year-old Zaria 

Bourne is an emerging force on 

the fairways. 

She was the youngest player 

in Waimairi Beach Golf Club’s 

history to win its senior 

club championship at the age 

of 12. 

Now Zaria’s skills have been 

recognised at the national 

GirlBoss awards. She won the 

emerging leader award last week 

at a ceremony in Auckland. 

Said Zaria: “I was very happy, 

surprised and thankful to win 

the award. Golf is typically a 

male-dominated sport and I’m 

happy to show other young 

women that ‘if he can do it, so 

can I’. 

“I’ve had a lot of rejection due 

to my skill, size and gender. That 

didn’t stop me from hitting the 

ball harder and further.” 

Zaria has been a part of the 

Waimairi golf club for about four 

years, and has scored not one but 

two hole-in-ones. 

Her dream is to become a 

professional golfer like Lydia Ko, 

and her vision is for an academy 

to be set up for young women so 

they can succeed together. 

“I want to lead other girls into 

believing they can do anything. 

Restraints can hold you back 

from becoming the best version 

of you.” 

The Catholic Cathedral College 

student was awarded $1000 

alongside the title and will save the 

money until she needs it most. 

She was one of three young 

women from Canterbury to 

receive awards. 

St Margaret’s College student 

Lucy Butterfield won the 

STEM award, and former 

Christchurch Girls High School 

head prefect Hawwa Niyaz the 

innovation award. 

The 11 winners were 

selected from 530 nominations 

nationwide. 

The Girlboss Awards are a 

nationwide search for young 

women aged 11-18 who are 

leaders, role models and

as community, sports, arts and

Booze ban on 

the cards at QEII 

AN ALCOHOL ban is being proposed 

at Queen Elizabeth II Park and the 

surrounding area. 

The city council is looking at amending 

its Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places 

Bylaw to allow for the alcohol ban, 

specifically during events with more than 

4000 attendees. 

The request, raised by the 

community, would require schedule 

2 of the bylaw to include QEII as a 

“large-scale event alcohol ban area”. 

The ban would apply from 

midnight to 11.59pm on the day of 

any designated event, within the 

area bounded by Ascot Ave, Bower 

Ave, Travis Rd, Frosts Rd and 

Beach Rd. 

“The proposed ban would be consistent 

with other Christchurch event venues that 

host large scale events, such as Hagley 

Park,” said city council head of strategic

behaviour in public places surrounding 

the venue on the days where there are 

large events.” 

Event providers can still apply for special 

licenses to serve alcohol at these events. 

“We’ve heard from stakeholders 

including Christchurch School of 

Gymnastics, Taiora QEII, Children’s 

Christmas Parade Trust, and 

Avonside Girls and Shirley Boys’ 

High Schools who all support the 

proposal,” said Griffiths. 

The city council will make 

a decision on the proposal on 

December 12. If approved, the 

bylaw amendment would take effect on 

December 18.

Dogs evolved more than 40 million 

years ago. 

Around 150-200 years ago, the concept of 

“breed” as we know it today was invented. 

Due to the popularity of showing and 

breeding in the early 1900’s, there was 

a need to create a spectrum of diverse 

breeds. The modern domestic dog became 

mans greatest genetic experiment - in 

some cases genetic triumph, in others 

genetic disaster. 

Health and welfare concerns about 

Brachycephalic dogs has become an 

increasingly high profile and contentious 

topic among the veterinary profession 

over recent years. There is no doubt these 

dogs have fabulous personalities and 

the popularity of this cherished breed is 

on the rise, but these dogs are strongly 

predisposed to a range of disorders due to 

their conformation. The most concerning 

is respiratory disease but they also get 

spinal disease, eye diseases, dystocia and 

heat stroke. It has been reported they live 

significantly shorter lifespans compared to 

non- Brachycephalic dogs. 

Brachycephalic breeds have a shorter wider 

skull, which leads to a narrow nasal passage 

and altered pharyngeal anatomy. Pugs 

and English bulldogs can have a dorsal 

rotation of the maxillary bone (upper 

jaw). Breathing is just really difficult, they 

are often snorers from a young age and 

exercising becomes an effort. If severe 

enough, these dogs will collapse, especially 

after a bout of over activity, excitement or 

excessive heat. Some dogs will gag, retch 

or reverse sneeze due to choking on their 

overly long soft palate. Regurgitation of 

food is common and this can be what 

they are seen for first. This can lead to 

bronchopneumonia. 

Diagnosis of elongated soft palate, tonsil 

enlargement and laryngeal collapse can 

only be made visually under carefully 

managed anaesthesia. Stenotic nostrils can 

be observed on physical exam.

Recently we had the pleasure of meeting 

“ Posh”, a much loved 7 month old French 

Bulldog. Posh was admitted for her 

desexing procedure and BOAS surgery 

with Dr Steve Heap ( BOAS is a combination 

or narrow nostrils and an overly long soft 

palate at the back of the throat) because 

she’s a breed to go on and develop severe 

respiratory disease later in life.

From all accounts Posh is experiencing no 

exercise intolerance, is a snorer though but 

healthy otherwise. Early surgical correction 

of this condition is advised before 

secondary changes develop in the airways, 

causing severe breathing issues that 

become irreversible, affecting her quality of 

life and exercise ability. 

We take extra precautions with the 

anaesthetic and drugs used because 

of her breed. Posh only had her palate 

shortened as her nostrils were of good 

width ( which is unusual for this breed). 

Posh breezed through her spey and palate 

surgery, waking up uneventfully, looking 

comfortable and settled. 

Recent studies have shown that 90% of 

BOAS dogs are significantly improved with 

surgery. If treatment is undertaken early 

before we see laryngeal collapse, these 

dogs can enjoy exercise and play without 

shortness of breath.
