In this week’s installment of award-winning
documentary series, Trusadh, Joy Dunlop heads
to New York City to host the first-ever New York
Mòd. As part of the 25th New York Tartan Week
celebration, Trusadh joins the Scottish diaspora
of this iconic city to celebrate links to Scotland
with thousands of pipers and highland dancers
taking the Manhattan streets by tartan storm.
There will be Gaelic singers in the mix too, from
all over the USA and also Scotland. Trusadh
follows Joy, An Comunn Gàidhealach and the
Tartan Week team in the build-up to the Mòd
event - which includes workshops, fèis-style
events and cèilidh sessions. Audiences are, of
course, introduced to some of the colourful
characters who enter this Gaelic Song Contest
such as Pamela Jean Agaloos from Queens, who
sings Òran Chaluim Sgàire with passion having
been taught by renowned Gaelic singer Christine
Primrose MBE, and John Grimaldi who is
legendary in Scottish circles in the USA and
sings in an all-male ensemble called Na h-
Eileanaich (the Islands which in this case refer
to Manhattan Island and Staton Island!). Other
entrants travel from Utah, Virginia and
Washington DC. There is even a Glaswegian
entrant flying the flag for Scotland. Trusadh
documents this momentous story in Gaelic
music's legacy where the winner of the first-ever
New York Tartan Week Mod is going to be
Gaelic's newest superstar.
