Fast-track to success
• By Sasha Watson
ANTHONY KUTOVOY is
weeks away from the next step
in a promising future in speed
skating.
The St Andrew’s College year
11 student will compete in the
junior world cup speed skating
series in the Netherlands in late
November and early December.
After winning the national
title for the sub junior men
(under 15) division at the New
Zealand open short track
championship in Dunedin in
September, he gained entry to
the first two junior world cups.
At these competitions, he will
be seeking to qualify for a third
junior world cup and the junior
world championship, held in
February 2024.
“At the Dunedin competition,
I also set a new record in the
1000m distance for my age
group,” said Anthony.
“Since I’ve started skating,
I have improved a lot . . . as
well as being the New Zealand
champion for my age group.”
The 15-year-old is part of
the Canterbury Alpine Ice
Skating Club. He has been
skating since 2019, originally
for the Mainland Ice Racing
Club before transferring to
Canterbury Alpine in 2021.
Said the Parklands resident:
“One of the things that caught
my eye with short track is the
competitiveness and adrenaline
of trying to hit your top speed
and push your boundaries.
“All while having to try to
pass and block other skaters. I
love skating because you get to
CARVING OUT A FUTURE: Anthony Kutovoy (right) will compete in the junior world
cup speed skating series in the Netherlands in late November and early December.
compete overseas against other,
like-minded people whose goal
is like mine – to be the best version
of myself.”
Anthony said he is training
six times a week with
Canterbury Alpine coach Ben
Whiteside.
The first junior world cup
is from November 26 to
27. Anthony and his coach
have self-funded flights for
November 18, to train in
the Netherlands for a week
beforehand.
“It is very hard to train in
New Zealand with the very
limited ice time and old equipment,”
said Anthony.
“(Speed skating) is very
competitive and requires a lot of
training and self-improvement,
which results in a healthy
lifestyle.”
New
structure
for red
zone
projects
THE ŌTĀKARO Avon River
Corridor co-governance
establishment committee has
adopted a new framework to
assess any city council-led
projects planned for the former
residential red zone.
Co-chairs Te
Maire Tau and
Lianne Dalziel said
the new assessment
framework will be
used as a sounding
board for future
projects.
“The framework
covers factors such
as climate change
resilience, ecological
improvements,
innovation and the
ability to practice
mahinga kai,” the
co-chairs said.
“As well as being
a measuring stick
Te Maire
Tau
Lianne
Dalziel
for us to determine the merits of
council-led projects, the new assessment
framework also be used
by anyone proposing projects in
the ‘activity areas’ of the OARC,
where non-council-led projects
can occur.
“Our overwhelming interest is
to ensure we return the area to its
original state, so we can prepare
ourselves for climate change and
mitigate the flooding risk to the
city. • Turn to page 7
Community groups ‘grateful’
for city council support
WALKING DOWN Merivale’s
Church Lane on a Tuesday
morning, you might hear music
and laughter coming from the
All Souls Church.
That’s the sound of the ukulele
session at The Corner, when
a group of musicians gather
weekly to play their instruments
together and enjoy each other’s
company.
Every third Thursday,
you’ll find 96-year-old Diana
Satterthwaite at The Corner.
Diana hosts morning tea and
leads a group that knit and sew
blankets that are then donated
to those in need.
Co-ordinator Frankie Roake
says these groups are two of the
many enjoyed at The Corner, a
community hub offering a place
for locals to meet for fun and
companionship.
The Corner has a busy
timetable of crafts, boardgames,
exercise, dance, books, films,
guest speakers on a variety of
topics, bi-monthly weekday
outings and a weekend social
event once a month.
Together, group members
support other members who
struggle with homelessness and
mental health with clothing and
other items.
Members are typically older
than 50, retired and single, but
anyone is welcome to join and
become part of the community.
Roake says the group provides
a place for people to find friendship
and companionship outside
of their home.
“In today’s world, it’s easy
for people to become isolated,
particularly if they are not
working, and they’ve lost
friends and family as they
become older.
“This is a place where they can
come for banter and to be part
of an inclusive community. “
The Corner is supported
by the All Souls Church, who
provide the space, and funding
comes from the city council and
lottery grants.
The organisation is also
supported by the city council’s
Computers to the Community
scheme, which Roake says is
hugely helpful.
The Corner has received free
computers for office use, as well
as a laptop that can be used by
members of the community
who need access to a computer,
COMMUNITY: Diana
Satterthwaite, 96, hosts craft
mornings at The Corner
every third Thursday.
and for guest speakers to use.
“It’s great to have computers
available for people to use
whenever they want, as well
as myself and my colleague.
We really are grateful for the
scheme.”
City council head of community
support and partnerships
John Filsell said the Computers
to the Community scheme
started in 2007 as a partnership
between the city council’s community
support unit and the
information amd technology
unit.
The scheme is administered
by the Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood community governance
team based at Fendalton
Library.
As part of the city council’s
computer replacement programme,
older model surplus
staff laptops and desktops are
repurposed and gifted to local
not-for-profit community organisations.
“We see this as a way to
acknowledge the amazing
efforts of local groups who work
hard to help build strong and
inclusive communities, like The
Corner.”
Approximately 400 devices
are donated each year to a
wide range of groups across
the city. These groups include
local sports clubs, social
service providers, heritage and
environmental groups and
multicultural organisations.
Filsell said many groups
struggle to compete for limited
funding, and priority is given to
key costs such as staff wages and
programme costs.
“Obtaining funding for
computers is often difficult and
feedback from the groups say
that this scheme has been a
lifesaver.”
Filsell said the scheme was
particularly useful following the
September 2010 and February
22, 2011 earthquakes as a
number of not-for-profit groups
required replacement computer
equipment, as theirs had
either been damaged or were
inaccessible due to their offices
being located in the central city.
It was also heavily relied on
during Covid with isolation and
many groups needing devices
for staff working from home.
“We have also been able to
give some of the older devices
to help out Tonga, the Solomon
Islands and Fiji following
devastating natural disasters, as
one-off donations and as part of
relief and support already going
to them,” he said.
The scheme is open all
year round and groups can
download an application form
on the city council’s website.
City’s young creatives
showcase their wares
• By Sasha Watson
THE KIND Foundation will be
hosting its annual youth market,
where young business owners,
aged 13-25, can showcase their
goods.
There will be over 30 stalls
at the market on Saturday, November
4, from 10am to 2pm, at
Oxford Terrace Auditorium.
Said the Kind Foundation’s
youth co-ordinator Brittany
Mackie:
“We have some incredible
young entrepreneurs and creatives
in our city and this market
gives them a space to experience
being stall-holders.
“This is a unique opportunity
for them to bring their businesses
to the community.”
Stalls will include items such
as jewellery, art prints, clothing,
baking, pottery, pounamu carvings,
and plants.
“We saw an awesome turnout
at our last event with more than
300 people from the community
coming along to shop and
support these local small businesses,”
said Mackie.
“We also had live music from
a bunch of different bands which
made for an awesome vibe –
the music will be back at this
market.”
This event is run by young
people as part of the Raise Up
youth leadership programme,
and thanks to funding from the
foundation stallholders do not
need to pay a fee.
“This is so that we can minimise
obstacles for young business
owners,” said Mackie.
Sixteen-year-old Burnside
High School student Isabella
Fenton went to the last market
and said: “I enjoyed getting to
Guiding the way for young girls
• By Sasha Watson
CIARA GIBSON has just
returned from representing New
Zealand at an international Girl
Guiding governance forum.
Now, the 20-year-old
Canterbury University student
wants to see more girls step up to
leadership positions.
Gibson, who lives in Ilam,
was selected as one of two New
Zealand representatives at the
38th World Association of Girl
Guiding and Girl Scouting world
conference in Cyprus.
About 400 delegates from 106
countries attended the event
to discuss strategy, policy and
leadership at a global level, elect
new world board members
and participate in a range of
workshops.
Gibson said the conference
connected her with other people
around the world who are
passionate about empowering
young women.
“But I also learned young
women can have much more
of a voice on numerous issues
and take advantage of a whole
range of different opportunities
compared to our peers in some
other countries,” she said.
“Guides has inspired me over
the years and has offered me
a wonderful chance to really
challenge myself and to learn
and grow.
“I want to offer the same
support and mentoring to other
girls and young women who
may want to become the leaders
of tomorrow, or who may just
want to have fun and enjoy new
challenges with a great group of
other girls in a safe space.”
Gibson sits on the
GirlGuiding NZ
national board, as the young
leader representative, and was
a member of the national girl
advisory group, which focuses
on giving young women a voice
within the organisation.
She has also attained the
Queen’s Guide award (the
highest achievement in guiding)
and has served as both a leader
and co-ordinator for the central
South Island region.
“It sometimes takes guts
to put your hand up and step
out of your comfort zone, and
that’s where I’ve been lucky as a
Girl Guide,” she said.
“It’s important for girls to see
other girls in leadership positions
and Guiding has been invaluable
in that respect. The organisation
GOING GLOBAL:
Ciara Gibson
was one of two
New Zealand
Girl Guide
representatives
at the world
conference.
has done so much to help me
overcome those barriers and help
me become a leader.”
Gibson didn’t have to look
far for inspiration to become
a Girl Guide. Her mother and
both of her grandmothers were
Guides, and her father and both
her grandfathers were involved
in Scouting. She joined the
organisation aged 7 as a Brownie.
Her mum, Sharon, is still a
Guide leader and her younger
sister, Brianna, is also a leader.
Established in 1908,
GirlGuiding NZ offers a
GirlGuiding NZ has
partnered with Griffin’s
again to bring the
kiwi favourite choc
guide biscuits back to
supermarket shelves.
While not being sold by
Girl Guides, the biscuits will
be available at Countdown,
SuperValue and
FreshChoice supermarkets
for a limited time to raise
funds for the organisation.
non-competitive learning
environment which is openminded
and values-based.
“It’s a supportive place to grow
confident, adventurous girls
who are ready to be tomorrow’s
leaders,” said Gibson.
“Given its strong focus on
inclusivity, and given the
challenges girls and young
women face in today’s society,
it’s a special place where girls
and young women can learn
new skills, create lifelong
connections, and nurture
personal growth and confidence.
“There’s still much more we
need to do at home to encourage
young Kiwi women to step
up. Our ‘tall poppy’ syndrome
means we often still hold
ourselves back.”
OARC co-governance options investigated
• From page 1
“The early settlers referred to
the eastern seaboard as a ‘delta’
and Ngāi Tahu valued the area
for mahinga kai. Both views
are compatible and we must
work together for the common
good.”
The co-governance
establishment committee was
established in August 2022 to
make decisions around both
permanent and transitional uses
within the OARC regeneration
area, and to investigate options
for a permanent co-governance
entity.
Ngāi Tūāhuriri Upoko Dr
Te Maire Tau and former
Christchurch Mayor Lianne
Dalziel co-chair the committee.
In addition to Dr Tau, Ngāi
Tūāhuriri appointed four
members – Tania Wati, Dr John
Reid, Thomas Hildebrand, and
Tutehounuku Korako – to the
committee.
Community members of
the committee include Hayley
Guglietta, Dr Cynthia Roberts
and Julyan Falloon. After last
year’s local body elections,
Councillor Kelly Barber was also
appointed.
The committee has also
determined a shortlist of options
for a permanent co-governance
entity for the OARC. These
options are being investigated in
more detail before the committee
makes a recommendation to the
city council.
It’s expected the permanent
entity will replace the
establishment committee
sometime in 2024.
Since its establishment, the
committee has also gained
an understanding of the city
council’s wide programme of
works and the opportunities that
the OARC provides, approved
the council’s community
planting programme for the 2023
season, and worked with thirdparty
groups on their proposals
to temporarily use the land.
Punchy take-offs ensured with Tucson
ADDING PLUG-IN hybrid
technology means one of
Hyundai’s best-selling SUVs,
the mid-sized Tucson, is just a
step removed from taking the
inevitable full electrification
plunge.
With its bold looks, digital
capabilities, and upgraded ride
and handling, Hyundai expects
this Tucson to add significantly
to the more than 7 million sold
globally since the original model
was launched 19 years ago. For
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
our market, the Tucson is only
sold in short-wheel base form,
while its cousin the Kia Sportage
rides on a long-wheel base.
The Tucson Hybrid comes
in 2WD and AWD forms with
the plug-in model exclusively
AWD, and road tested here in
top spec Elite guise. Power is
distributed to the front and rear
wheels depending on traction
conditions, while the Terrain
Mode selector maximizes power,
torque and braking depending on
the conditions you’re driving in.
The Tucson plug-in hybrid
isn’t cheap compared to many
of its rivals with the entry-level
version retailing for $83,990,
with a $5000 premium on the
more lavishly attired Elite. This
pricing pushes it over the $80,000
price cap to qualify for a $4000
clean car rebate available until
31 December, when the new
government pulls the plug on
the two-year-old clean vehicle
scheme.
A high tempo 195kW plug-in
hybrid powertrain is strong and
feisty with acceleration that
bristles with sporty intent. It’s
not just show – it’s got plenty of
go too. A rich vein of torque and
the extra kick of the fully charged
battery pack, ensures punchy
take-offs from standing starts,
and purposeful pulling power
for most driving situations.
These attributes make light work
of undulating roads and long
energy draining uphill grinds.
The plug-in has an all-electriconly
range of up to 65km, similar
to several rivals including the
Mitsubishi Eclipse and Ford
Escape. Both pack a much lighter
performance punch than the
heavy hitting Tucson PHEV’s
195kW.
For a model with glowing
fuel economy credentials, the
test car was disappointing. I
knocked off a 500km roadie in
it with four adults on board, on
a trip covering some sections
of hilly driving, and averaged
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build
Quality 7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Avg fuel
consumption on road test 6.8L/100km; Value for money 6;
Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating. No clean car fee.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
7.3L/100km. That number is well
north of the claimed 1.5L/100km.
This might be doable in low
speed town driving when the car
can spend extended periods in
EV mode, but well out of reach
on open road romps.
Expertly managing what is
one of the more potent non-full
EV’s on Hyundai New Zealand’s
books is a smart rework of
the company’s proven 7-speed
automatic.
For a compact SUV, front and
rear legroom is adequate rather
than generously provisioned. I
found the rear door openings
too narrow to easily navigate
bulkier items through, like child
car seats. The rear cargo hatch
does the job, but isn’t helped by
the batteries being stored under
the floor, raising its elevation and
restricting load height.
SUV buyers demand top rate
connectivity in their vehicles
these days and the Tucson has
that well covered with some of
the best in class digital tech.
Hyundai’s Digital Key is great,
turning your smartphone into a
smart key.
The suspension is sportier than
many hybrids with its nimble
and playful character, and
composed in managing sudden
deviations in the road surface.
No complaints about passenger
comfort that is largely free of the
choppy listless ride traits of some
short wheelbase SUVs.
Little in the way of suspension
noise penetrates the passenger
compartment, even under
severe provocation from sub
standard roads. Well weighted,
communicative steering responds
quickly to the driver inputs,
and allows you to accurately
and effortlessly place the vehicle
where you want it on the road.
This vehicle puts fun with a
capital ‘F’ into the sub $90,000
plug-in hybrid class.
Mission Without Borders
visit the Sechka’s house
with support to lift them
out of poverty.
Families in Ukraine
need your help!
The Sechka family live in a rural area
of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in
an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo,
40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to
provide for their family. They face a massive
challenge as three of their five children have
severe disabilities. One of their daughters
is unable to walk at all. The health of
their children means they need medical
examinations, check-ups, and treatment.
Which costs money.
Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but
when the war began, he lost most of his
wages then he had to quit. Since then, he
has focused on farming and keeps cows,
pigs, geese, and poultry to survive.
Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they
are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate
a lot of land to grow forage for the animals,
and vegetables and grain for the family. He
was using an old tractor that he bought 15
years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and
required constant repair. Mykhailo says that
after each working day he had to repair it
and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then,
the old tractor became a place where Mieko
and his siblings play.
Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts,
the family’s situation became very difficult.
The loss of income, health issues and the
ongoing war has taken its toll.
Mieko’s family need help with resources,
such as tools and machinery, so they can
grow food for themselves.
Right now, the Ukrainian economy
is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So,
supporting families just like Mieko’s with a
self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline.
Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have
resulted in physical and psychological
issues. There is no doubt that the impact
of war will be felt by his family and many
others for years to come.
Support MiSSion Without BorderS
At Mission Without Borders, we regularly reach
out to Kiwis who respond by giving, praying,
and offering their unwavering support.
If you would like to help, here are
some ways we can make a difference
together:
1. A gift of $30 will supply an emergency
food and hygiene parcel to help
displaced and vulnerable people in the
Ukraine.
2. Sponsor a family: we have families
in Ukraine waiting right now for
sponsorship. You can enable and
encourage a whole family to lift
themselves out of poverty and become
self-sufficient for $45 a month.
3. Consider donating towards a selfsufficiency
project for a family like
Mieko’s. This will give them the
opportunity to not only survive but
thrive ‒ $25 will provide a packet of
seeds to grow life-sustaining fruits
and vegetables.
