(Source: Adobe Stock) HEALTH CAPSULES By LISA RUSSELL Start your family’s health history this Thanksgiving When extended families gather for Thanksgiving celebrations later this month, they’ll have an opportunity to share more than a traditional feast. Thanksgiving Day also marks Family Health History Day, an annual public health campaign encouraging Americans to better understand the health characteristics – and the potential for genetically linked health problems – that run in their families. Is there a history of colon cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol or early heart disease in your family? Have any female relatives had breast or ovarian cancer, or is prostate cancer common among the men? If so, you or your children also could be at risk. A family health history can be an informative, no-cost component of your personalized healthcare plan. Sharing that history with each family member’s primary care physician may be helpful in predicting their risk for specific diseases, and suggesting whether further screening or preventive treatment is needed before any disease becomes evident. Using a free online tool from the U.S. Surgeon General called My Family Health Portrait, families can record and print their health histories and take them along to medical appointments. The tool also allows users to save their family history information to their own computers and share updates to health history information with other family members over time. According to the Surgeon General, a family health history ideally should contain health information going back at least three generations, listing the diseases and conditions that have affected members of each. It should include the age at which a particular disease was diagnosed and, in the case of deceased family members, the cause of death. The most important relatives to include are parents, siblings and children. Access to the My Family Health Portrait tool is available at genome.gov/health/ Family-Health-History. Ginger supplements may be anti-inflammatory treatment Ginger is quickly gaining in popularity worldwide, to the tune of nearly $3 billion in global sales on ginger-based products last year alone…and it’s not just because it adds a unique spicy flavor to Asian dishes and healthy smoothies. New research reveals that ginger supplements may be an effective, natural way to manage inflammation for people with autoimmune conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The study points to ginger’s ability to influence neutrophils, a type of white blood cell which is part of the immune system’s first line of defense against inflammation. Consuming ginger seems to make those cells less susceptible to a process called NETosis, which is triggered by a variety of infections and diseases. In a clinical trial, researchers found that healthy participants who took a ginger supplement every day for a week (containing 20 mg of gingerols) increased their levels of a chemical that helped to block NETosis when exposed to certain inflammatory disease triggers, they said. “Our research, for the first time, provides evidence for the biological mechanism that underlies ginger’s apparent anti-inflammatory properties in people,” said senior co-author Jason Knight, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor in the University of Michigan Division of Rheumatology. “There are not a lot of natural supplements, or prescription medications for that matter, that are known to fight overactive neutrophils. (Source: Adobe Stock) more strategic and personalized in terms of helping to relieve people’s symptoms.” The researchers said they hope that providing more evidence about ginger’s benefits, including the direct mechanism by which ginger impacts neutrophils, will encourage healthcare providers and patients to include ginger as part of an antiinflammatory disease treatment plan. The study was published in JCI Insight. Do you ‘helicopter parent’ without realizing it? The fear of being labeled a “bad parent” – or of being criticized or blamed by others for not adequately supervising their child – is one reason parents don’t let their preteen kids be on their own or do things for themselves, according to a recent University of Michigan poll. And while most parents participating in the poll agreed that kids must have these opportunities to gain independence and confidence, they may be doing more “helicopter parenting” than they realize. “There’s a sizable gap between parent attitudes about promoting children’s independence and what they actually allow or encourage their children to do without supervision,” said C.S. Mott Poll Co-Director Sarah Clark, M.P.H. “This suggests some parents may be missing opportunities to guide their children in tasks of autonomy and unintentionally hindering kids’ development of independence and problem-solving skills.” Four out of five parents of children ages 9-11, polled in the random survey of more than 1,000 parents nationwide, agreed that it’s good for children to have free time on their own without adult supervision. But far fewer reported their child actually does certain things without an adult present. For example, less than half said their child has walked or biked to a friend’s house, played at a park with a friend, or waited in the car while the parent ran a quick errand. About three in five said they have let their child stay home alone for 30-60 minutes, and half said they have let their child separate from them to look for an item in a store. Fewer than one in six said they have allowed their child to

The top reason behind this hesitancy to allow independent milestones, parents said, was concern over their child’s safety. However, while just over half said they worried someone might scare, follow or harm their child, just 17% said their neighborhood is not safe for children to be alone. “To some extent, worrying about your child is natural. But some parents are limiting their child’s independent activities due to highly publicized media reports, even if those outcomes are very unlikely to occur or cannot be prevented,” Clark said. The elementary school years, she added, are a critical period for developing independence with parental guidance and support. (Source: Adobe Stock) If helicopter parenting continues into the teen years – regardless of the well-intentioned reasons – research has shown a lack of independence can result in increased levels of anxiety and depression, ineffective coping skills, poor self-confidence and lowered academic performance, among other negative outcomes.
