After a busy 2023, our Christmas 

started early this year with a visit 

to Billingley Christmas Tree Farm 

in the Dearne Valley to see what goes into 

growing the nation’s Christmas trees. 

It isn’t every day you get to feel like a child again 

seeing a magical Santa’s grotto with real reindeer 

roaming about. 

To get you in the festive spirit, this edition is 

packed with something for all the family to enjoy 

this season from pantos to breakfast with Santa, 

festive light switch on events to Christmas fayres 

and markets. 

Once again we showcase the best South 

Yorkshire has to offer in retail and leisure 

destinations. We encourage you to keep it local 

this Christmas and support local businesses. 

As the season of goodwill is upon us, it’s a 

pleasure to share the wonderful work of people 

in our area who volunteer their time to help raise 

vital funds. We feature the elves busy with their toy 

appeal and Santa preparing his sleigh ready to 

visit our neighbourhoods. 

We also embarked on our own charitable 

event organising a fashion show at Wentworth 

Woodhouse in support of the Master Cutler’s 

Challenge that will benefit local community 

projects at the house. 

This year has been very challenging with the 

rising cost of living, but we hope to brighten up 

your day with a positive and inspiring read that 

supports the place we call home.

Billingley’s 

Farmer Christmas 

The big man in red might get all the glory, but 

there’s someone here in South Yorkshire without 

whom Christmas might not be so magical. 

His black boots are covered in 

mud, not soot, he carries loppers 

rather than a sack of presents, 

and in place of a sleigh is a shiny 

red tractor. 

No, it’s not Santa, it’s Stenton. 

Andrew Stenton, aka Farmer 

Christmas. 

Third-generation farmer Andrew 

is the brains behind Billingley 

Christmas Tree Farm. Every year, 

thousands of families flock to this 

small village between Darfield and 

Goldthorpe to pick their own festive 

fir, visit Santa’s grotto, and see the 

real reindeer that live at Billingley. 

But the trees grown at Billingley 

don’t just end up trimmed up as 

centrepieces in houses. Wherever 

appearing in the likes of Doctor Who, Still

you see a real Christmas tree this 

year, be it in a town centre, outside 

a hospital or football stadium, even 

those sold in garden centres and 

farm shops, chances are it’s been 

grown at Billingley. 

Billingley Christmas Tree Farm 

sells thousands of trees each year 

to individuals, businesses and 

organisations across the country. 

Their customer base includes 

grand stately homes like Wentworth 

Woodhouse, Chatsworth House, and 

other English Heritage and National 

Trust properties. 

Footballers from clubs such 

as Rotherham United come each 

year to pick the trees that will stand 

outside the stadium and in the 

executive suites. 

Their trees are regularly used in 

film and magazine shoots, appearing 

in the likes of Doctor Who, Still 

Open All Hours and Country Living 

magazine. Clothing brands like Fat 

Face, Regatta and Next have called 

upon Billingley to supply trees for 

their Christmas campaigns. 

Andrew also works with councils 

up and down the country, from 

County Durham to Wales, shipping 

these beautiful 30-foot-tall trees 

destined to bring joy to towns and 

city centres. 

So, how did this humble family

farm in the Dearne Valley become 

a leading grower and retailer of 

Christmas trees? 

It was the foot and mouth 

disease outbreak in 2001 that would 

see Andrew turn his family farm’s 

fortunes around by making the 

decision to switch from pedigree 

cattle to Christmas trees. 

The family had been cattle 

farmers since the late 1950s when 

Andrew’s grandad, Sydney Stenton, 

started a dairy farm in 1957. Sydney 

leased the land at Hall Farm from the 

Fitzwilliam Wentworth Estate, and 

son Michael soon joined him. 

Under Michael’s management, 

they branched into arable farming, 

with wheat, barley and bean crops. 

Andrew grew up around the farm, 

watching his parents, Michael and 

Anne, rearing livestock, lugging hay 

bales around, and ploughing on with 

the highs and lows of farming life. 

“As a kid I was obsessed with 

growing things. I used to make my 

own greenhouses and see what I 

could grow. I also bred rabbits and 

would bike it over to the garden 

centre at Darfield to try and sell them 

for £2 a piece,” Andrew says. 

After leaving school, Andrew 

studied agriculture at Bishop Burton 

College whilst also working on the 

farm. He returned full-time in the 

early 1990s, after Sydney died, and 

decided to pursue his interest in 

breeding Charolais cattle, a breed 

of French pedigree cows known for 

their curly white coats. Their livestock 

were very successful and won 

most of the big agricultural shows. 

Andrew was even invited to judge 

competitions in France. 

“It was all I wanted to do. But 

then foot and mouth disease hit, 

and the business ceased practically 

overnight. We had lines of bulls that 

were meant for farms in Perth in 

Scotland but the livestock lockdown 

meant we couldn’t move any of 

them. We lost thousands of pounds.” 

The Stentons needed to diversify. 

But how? It was a customer up in 

Perth that suggested selling real 

Christmas trees. 

“We were told there was a good 

markup on them and they were 

relatively low risk, so why not try it. 

We bought a few trees to sell and 

my wife Sally and I did a homemade 

sign that we stood at the end of the 

drive. We were shocked at just how 

fast they sold. 

“I remember I rang Barnsley 

Council from our spare bedroom and 

asked them if I could supply their 

main Christmas tree for the town 

centre. I quoted them £80 and told 

them I couldn’t do it any cheaper 

than that. I’d no clue about pricing.” 

However, it was clear that 

demand was there. Andrew was onto 

something. He had that spark that 

Christmas trees would be the thing 

to keep their business going. 

The initial plan had been to just 

buy and sell Christmas trees. But in 

their second year, Andrew decided 

to plant a few trees to make the farm 

look festive. Fast forward 20-odd 

years and the farm is covered in 

50,000 trees from baby saplings 

to gigantic trees that have been 

growing for the last decade or more. 

Along with their family farm at 

Billingley, Andrew now manages 

hundreds of thousands of Christmas 

trees across various sites. There are 

another 20,000 at their second farm 

in Marr, and they oversee Christmas 

trees on country estates such as 

Sutton Bank and Duncombe Park in 

the North York Moors. 

Surprisingly, for an operation 

as involved as this one, the team is 

small, with just Andrew, wife Sally, 

and two other full-time staff, Adrian 

and Chris. 

“Adrian and I went to college 

together and I used to give him lifts 

back to Barnsley. He joined us here 

in our second year selling Christmas 

trees and has been by my side ever 

since. Chris manages our arable 

crops that are also a big part of what 

we do. And Sally is intrinsic to the 

business. She does all the office stuff 

like invoicing, managing accounts 

and dealing with our wholesale 

customers. 

“During our peak season, we 

do have a few more staff to help us 

pack trees. Mum and Dad retired 

about ten years ago but they come 

in every year to help over the busy 

festive period. And our three kids, 

Abbie, Tilly and William, all get stuck 

in as well when needed.”

Santa might have one busy 

day out of the year, but at Billingley 

Christmas Tree Farm there is never a 

quiet day. Andrew and his team work 

constantly throughout the year, doing 

many tasks by hand. 

“We have a few weeks after 

Christmas to do some dusting down 

but then the planting starts again 

in February March time. We plant 

three-year-old baby trees, known as 

transplants, that come from Denmark 

or Germany. They get put in the gaps 

between the stumps left behind from 

the trees felled at Christmas. For 

every tree we cut, we plant another in 

its place.” 

Importing these transplants 

has become another area of the 

business. When we visited, Andrew 

told us how they were expecting a 

delivery of 14,000 transplants from 

Denmark that would then be sent to 

other growers across the country. 

From these spiky saplings do the 

mighty Christmas trees grow – albeit 

in six to eight years’ time. 

They grow six varieties of 

Christmas trees including the 

customer favourite Nordmann Fir 

with its glossy appearance, and the 

traditional Norway Spruce. There are 

also Fraser firs popular in the US, 

Blue Spruce, Lasiocarpa Spruce, 

and a range of Blue Whistle trees 

native to Korea. 

“This year has been ideal weather 

for growing Christmas trees; not too 

dry or hot and not too much rain 

either. But it’s not been as good 

for the arable crops that we still 

have here.” 

The weather might play a part, 

but their bountiful crops are also 

down to sheer hard work. It’s not a 

case of planting trees and watching 

nature take its course. The work is 

labour intensive, with weed and pest 

control, pruning, propagating, and 

checking the soil’s PH levels just 

some of the daily tasks. 

They’ve spent more than twenty 

years in this industry and continue to 

progress, developing new methods 

and ensuring the Billingley team have 

the know-how to keep trees in their 

best possible condition. 

For their commitment to 

producing high quality trees, 

Billingley have won numerous 

awards, including best Norway 

Spruce and best container grown 

tree at the British Christmas Tree 

Growers Association Awards. This 

year, they were asked to host the 

annual event and welcomed TV’s 

Yorkshire Vet, Peter Wright, to the 

farm in October. 

With thousands of trees on 

site, all growing at different stages, 

you might be wondering how they 

work out which ones will be for sale 

each year. 

From September onwards, 

Andrew and Adrian spend a month 

or so assessing the quality and 

height of the trees. They tag which 

ones are bound for commercial 

homes like hospitals or hotels, which 

ones will be going to wholesale, 

and which ones will be available for 

visitors to buy direct from the farm. 

In October, they open their VIP 

ticket sales, an idea that was started 

in the Covid lockdown of 2020. The 

sale of Christmas trees was given a 

stay of execution in Parliament, so 

businesses could remain open if they 

sold Christmas trees. 

“The idea was to pre-book a time 

slot which helped us keep within 

social distancing guidelines. But the 

following year we were inundated 

with requests customers to do 

it again.” 

November is when the farm 

opens for people to come and 

choose their tree at their leisure. The 

whole site is turned into a magical 

experience, with yuletide joy a plenty. 

There’s a sleigh stop for hot 

drinks, and the most charming grotto 

with twinkling lights, roaring fire, 

and Mr and Mrs Claus waiting to 

greet children. 

Visitors can also meet the farm’s 

resident animals, with two pygmy 

goats, two donkeys, and four 

reindeers named Alta, Aspen, Clint 

and Cupid. 

By early December, for anyone 

who hasn’t yet bought their tree, 

they fill their two large barns with cut 

trees that can be taken home the 

same day, along with a selection of 

baubles and decorations. 

Then after Christmas, they 

even offer a recycling service where 

trees are chipped and spread 

back onto the crops, aiding their 

sustainable practices. 

Maybe amongst it all, the 

Stentons might get chance to 

enjoy their own family Christmas. 

No guesses where they get their 

tree from...

As it’s the season of festivities, this edition’s 

health page is a light-hearted take on what advice 

I would give to three popular Yuletide characters. 

Father 

Christmas 

The outlook for jolly old Saint 

Nick is bleak, as his poor diet, 

busy lifestyle and lack of exercise 

are wreaking havoc on his health. 

Santa can always pop into his 

local pharmacy to get his health 

checked out – as can you. 

We believers may be feeding 

those binge eating habits by 

leaving him a calorie laden mince 

pie and glass of sherry. All this 

midnight munching, along with 

swallowing lots of air during 

the sleigh-ride, will leave Santa 

feeling bloated with heartburn and 

indigestion burning away in his 

bowful of jelly belly. Stocking up on 

antacids which contain aluminium 

and magnesium will help neutralise 

Mary 

All pregnancies are a 

blessing. But for Mary, being 

heavily pregnant in the lead up to 

Christmas may not have felt like it 

at times. 

What with hemorrhoids and 

heartburn, the last thing she 

probably wanted to do was trek 70 

miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem 

when she should have been putting 

her feet up in her third trimester. 

Swollen ankles are a common 

side effect of pregnancy, but be 

aware of sudden swelling of the 

face, hands or feet, along with high 

blood pressure, severe headaches 

and vomiting which can be signs of 

pre-eclampsia. 

With no room at the inn and 

being forced to sleep surrounded 

by animals, she should have 

ensured she’d had her vaccinations 

such as the flu jab and whooping 

stomach acid. 

That red suit gets tighter every 

year and his cherry red nose 

and rosy pink cheeks could be 

warning signs of hypertension, 

or high blood pressure, putting 

him at risk of serious conditions 

such as heart disease, stroke and 

vascular dementia. 

I would advise Santa to ensure 

he has enough medication to 

cover the Christmas period. 

You too should check your 

supply and arrange for any 

repeat prescriptions before your 

community pharmacist gets into 

the swing of Christmas. If you do 

run out, remember you can call 

NHS 111 who will refer you to 

the closest pharmacy with your 

medication in stock for an urgent 

supply without the need for a 

prescription.

If you’re travelling while pregnant 

this winter, make sure you keep 

your maternity records with you just 

in case you need medical advice 

while away from home. 

Winter means shorter daylight 

hours so it’s important that 

pregnant women continue to take 

a vitamin D supplement. Mary 

should also have been mindful 

about the use of herbal remedies 

and aromatherapy – the wise men’s 

gifts of frankincense and myrrh 

would not have been advised. 

Breastfeeding women should also 

seek advice from a pharmacist or 

GP before taking decongestants, 

antihistamines and aspirin. 

If you are growing your own 

miracle over Christmas, make 

sure you follow the recommended 

foods to avoid such as mouldripened 

cheeses, pate and cured or 

undercooked meats. 

Frosty the 

Snowman 

Stood in the cold for long hours 

with only a scarf on, it’s no surprise 

that Frosty is susceptible to a range 

of winter illnesses. 

His carrot nose is running, his 

stony eyes streaming, and his 

snowball head feels like it may 

explode into a flurry of flakes. But is 

it just a common cold or could it be 

a more serious case of flu? 

With a cold, symptoms may be 

sneezing and coughing, loss of 

taste and pressure in the ears. It is 

best to rest, keep warm, drink lots 

of fluids and take over-the-counter 

decongestants.

The flu causes sudden fever, 

aching body, tiredness and difficulty 

sleeping, with tummy trouble or 

nausea. Seek advice from your GP 

if you are over 65, pregnant or have 

a chronic condition. 

The cold winter air may also 

trigger Frosty’s asthma, causing 

him to feel wheezier and short of 

breath. Wearing a scarf over his 

nose and mouth can soften the cold 

air he breathes in and he would be 

wise to keep an inhaler handy. 

His twig arms and joints may 

also feel stiffer in winter and he 

could develop itchy red chilblains 

in his fingers and toes, caused by 

narrowing of the blood vessels. 

Keeping extremities covered and 

warm can prevent this.

five tips to treat a loved one or

1. Add seasonal sparkle to your 

hair colour with babylights 

Quick and commitment free, babylights are 

very fine strands of highlighted hair that are 

placed around your hairline to add a touch of 

lightness to your face. Because no colour touches 

the skin, they can be done without the need for 

a skin test. And due to them being so fine, they 

leave no definite regrowth making them perfect for 

a sprinkling of festive colour or a one-off treat. 

2. Treat your hair to a deep 

healthy shine with a salon quality 

conditioning treatment

Over the years, the New Image 

team have dressed thousands of 

ladies including local dignitaries such

tops £4,000 

We’re delighted to announce 

that the charity fashion show 

we hosted at Wentworth 

Woodhouse in September 

raised a whopping £4,131,67. 

The event was a sell-out, with 200 people 

packing out the grand Marble Saloon. 

We invited four of our fashion boutiques 

to showcase their collections on the catwalk: 

Pink Boutique, Si Joli, Tru Boutique, and New 

Image. They all had a diverse range of models 

ranging from aged 13 up to ladies in their 80s. 

Even the Master Cutler, Dame Julie Kenny, 

modelled on the night. 

The evening was compered by former 

fashion journalist, Jo Davison, and we had 

entertainment from the brilliant swing singer, 

Joseph O’Brien. During the interval, there 

were stalls to browse from all the fashion 

boutiques, plus Infinity Jewellers, Pettits, and 

Grape Kitchen. 

The total monies raised was boosted by 

a brilliant raffle which included a diamond 

necklace donated by Infinity Jewellers. Well 

done to Cheryl – not ours! – for winning it on 

the night. 

The fashion show was just one event that 

helped Dame Julie Kenny raise a total of 

£170,000 for the Master Cutler’s Challenge 

2023. This will now be invested into new 

inclusive community projects and events at 

Wentworth Woodhouse. 

We also received the Legacy Award at the 

Master Cutler’s Challenge 2023 celebration 

event for organising the challenge most likely 

to become a regular fundraising event at 

Wentworth Woodhouse. Keep your diaries 

open for 2024 as plans are already underway.

Panto is back 

at Barnsley Civic – Oh, yes it is! 

Cinderella was right: dreams 

really do come true if you wish 

hard enough. 

After a 25-year break, the beloved family 

pantomime returns to Barnsley Civic this 

December with a special performance of 

Cinderella and the best value tickets in town. 

In a twist of fate not unlike a fairytale, the 

last panto performed at Barnsley Civic before 

the Eldon Street doors closed in the late ‘90s 

was – you guessed it – Cinderella. 

For the 2023 festive season, Barnsley Civic 

have teamed up with Yorkshire production 

company, Panto Ever After, to give a modern take 

on the classic Cinderella story. 

Forget about the household chores and get 

your glad rags on as this is set to be the event of 

the century. So, will you come to the ball? 

The cast is made up of northern actors who 

are all really excited to be performing in this longawaited 

revival. 

Taking to the Barnsley Civic stage in the 

starring role is musical theatre star, Emily Harper, 

who will be donning Cinders’ glass slippers for 

the first time. Her Prince Charming is Thomas 

Wordsworth, a popular cruise ship performer, so 

expect a dazzling duet or two. 

Barnsley born Joshua Barton plays Cinderella’s 

lovesick best friend, Buttons. After performing in 

the touring version of The Commitments, Joshua 

can’t wait to get back to his Barnsley roots for the 

pantomime season. 

Get ready to hiss and boo at Fiona Egan’s 

portrayal of the villainous Stepmother who will 

be joined by her two wickedly ugly (and grumpy) 

daughters, Siri and Alexa, played by Robert Took 

and James Nicholas. 

With engaging storytelling, incredible 

costumes, and hilarious jokes, Cinderella at 

Barnsley Civic will be a magical experience for all 

the family. 

Barnsley Civic is currently undergoing a 

multi-million-pound redevelopment project which 

will include reopening the grand Eldon Street 

entrance. The 334-seater theatre is based in

Square between Thursday 7th and Sunday 10th 

December for food stalls, drinks trucks, and 

gift stalls. 

Getting to The Glass Works is easy. It’s 

within walking distance of the interchange and 

train station, or there is ample car parking with 

reasonable charges – and it’s free every day after 

5pm, plus get three hours free every weekend. 

The Glass Works is open seven days and there 

will be late night shopping events in the build up 

to Christmas. The retailers will be open until 8pm 

on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December for the 

Christmas market, and then every night Monday 

18th to Friday 22nd December.

A Very Victorian Christmas 

at Cannon Hall Museum

with Victorian traditions. 

Bah humbug! That old miser, 

Ebeneezer Scrooge, is back 

on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 

3rd December for his popular 

retelling of A Christmas Carol. Join 

Chris Cade for some audience 

participation in this heart-warming 

family performance as he journeys 

through his Christmases gone-by 

with the ghosts of his redemption to 

find that missing festive spirit. There 

will be four 30-minute sessions 

each day including a relaxed 

session at 12pm and two with a 

British Sign Language interpreter 

on the Saturday. Tickets are £3 per 

child and £6 per adult and must be 

booked in advance. 

Every weekend in December, 

have A Very Victorian Christmas 

as Santa stops by to meet the 

children of South Yorkshire. Hear 

the Christmas story as told by a 

Victorian nursery maid and play with 

traditional Victorian toys, followed 

by a chance to meet and receive 

a gift from Santa. Tickets are £15 

per child and must be booked in 

advance. There will be six time slots 

each day, with a relaxed session 

at 11am.

Experience Barnsley 

As the home of Barnsley’s 

history, Experience Barnsley 

is an award-winning museum 

which takes you on a 

fascinating journey through 

the stories from days gone 

by. 

But this festive season, travel to 

the magical realm of Middle-earth 

with the Tolkien inspired exhibition 

that is currently on at Experience 

Barnsley. You’ll find over 200 rare 

objects from the legendary Lord 

of the Rings and Hobbit fandom, 

with lots of interactive elements 

throughout the exhibition. 

During the Barnsley Bright Nights 

event on Friday 24th and Saturday 

25th November, the museum will be 

open late until 8.3pm for free drop-in 

craft sessions where you can make 

a dragon egg or wizard wand. 

A new idea for this year, there will 

also be a community toy swap on 

Saturday 2nd December between 

10.30am-2.30pm. Bring along any 

quality, good condition toys your 

children no longer play with and 

see if there is something else to 

exchange it for. A great way to 

clear out your pile of unwanted 

toys before Christmas while also 

reducing waste! 

Have a winter wander around 

Worsbrough Mill 

When it’s time to escape 

the house and enjoy some 

fresh air this Christmas, 

Worsbrough Mill and Country 

Park makes for a fantastic 

outing for all the family. 

Enjoy a brisk stroll or dog walk 

around the reservoir or grab a 

multisensory trail map from the 

mill shop to see what you can find 

while you walk. If you have children, 

there’s also a playground to burn 

off even more energy – and 

Christmas sugar! 

The museum is open Wednesday 

to Sunday between 10am-3pm 

where you can see the 17th Century 

working water mill. There is also a 

popular tearoom on-site that’s open 

daily between 9.30am-4pm. 

On Sunday 10th December there 

will also be a Christmas market 

between 10am-3pm with plenty 

of crafters, makers, bakers, and 

artisan gift stalls to treat yourself or 

someone on your Christmas list. 

This winter, take a trip 

to Barnsley’s premier art 

gallery for a chance to 

see and buy some unique 

artwork created by South 

Yorkshire artists. 

The Cooper Prize exhibition 

is now on at Cooper Gallery, 

showcasing the winning 

submissions and finalists from 

South Yorkshire’s most prestigious 

art competition. This is an exciting 

opportunity to discover just how 

good the quality of our local 

artists’ work is. 

This year, there were a record 

number of entrants, with over 400 

submissions from professional, 

amateur and student artists. 

The standard of work, which 

encompasses various mediums, 

was to an incredibly high standard. 

The exhibition includes the 

winners and highly commended 

in all four categories: the Cooper 

Prize, Sadler Award for emerging 

artists, Fox Gift for under 16s, and 

Barnsley College Special Award 

for Originality and Skills. 

Visitors to the exhibition will 

also have their say to crown 

the People’s Choice winner by 

choosing the piece they love 

the most. 

All the work in the exhibition will 

be for sale at reasonable prices 

and you will be supporting home 

grown talent.

Make your own Christmas Card Holder 

You will need 

Red and green card 

Patterned Christmas papers 

Tartan ribbon and embellishments 

Strong glue, scissors and ruler 

Mini pegs 

Toilet roll inner tube 

Method 

1. Cut four pieces of red card 11cm x 21cm. 

2. Cut four pieces of green card 8cm x 21cm. 

3. Cut patterned papers to match 0.5 cm less 

than plain. 

4. Use the toilet roll inner to gently roll each 

piece and bring edges together. 

5. Round all corners with your scissors. Glue 

patterned papers onto plain pieces and use pegs 

to hold together until dry. You should now have 

four red bows and four green bows. 

6. Cut two squares from red card 9cm x 9cm 

and one in green card 6.5cm x 6.5cm. 

7. Place one 9cm red square on your work 

surface. Gently bend the bottom of your red 

bows up about 3cm to flatten. Use strong glue to 

attach to your red panel on all four sides leaving 

the middle open. 

8. Repeat with the green bows and 

green square. 

9. Now glue your green set of bows on top of 

your red set. 

10. Cut your ribbon to 132cm. Fold in half and 

glue under the base. Cut another piece 36cm to 

make a hanging loop. Glue in place at the top. 

11. Glue your remaining red square onto the 

at 

back of your holder to cover any cut edges. 

12. Decorate with a Santa picture, poinsettia, 

pieces of ribbon and punched snowflakes or your 

own embellishments. 

Your Christmas Card Holder is now complete 

and ready to attach your Christmas cards to the 

ribbons with your mini pegs.

Santa Claus is coming to town 

Two charitable 

organisations in our 

area are back with their 

Santa sleigh runs to 

bring a spot of festive 

spirit to the town. 

Maltby Lions and Rotherham 

Round Table will be visiting streets, 

estates and supermarkets across 

the borough. 

These festive sleigh runs are 

all organised and manned by 

volunteers as part of their annual 

fundraising campaigns. Last year, 

your donations helped these two 

groups raise over £22,500 from the 

sleigh runs. 

The elves will have their buckets 

at the ready for donations which will 

all go to good causes, charities and 

community groups.

after 5.30pm. All dates listed are

Christmas is a time for giving, and here in 

South Yorkshire we have so many amazing 

people who give their time to helping others. 

Here are some ways you can give to good causes this festive period. 

The elves are busy working at 

Rotherham Christmas Toy Appeal 

The Rotherham Christmas Toy 

Appeal is running again this year 

to make sure no child or young 

person goes without a gift to 

open on Christmas morning. 

The annual appeal is co-ordinated by Ann 

Levick of Families First, plus a team of dedicated 

elves who all volunteer to ensure the children and 

young people of Rotherham have a happy, joyful 

Christmas day. 


What started as redistributing second-hand 

toys in the 1990s has since grown to an appeal 

which provided gifts to over 2,100 children and 

young people last year. The Christmas Toy Appeal 

receives requests from professionals working 

closely with families so they can identify those 

most in need. 

This Christmas will be harder than ever for 

many Rotherham families. The rising cost of living, 

mortgage or rent increases, gas and electric rates, 

and food prices have taken its toll. 

However, Ann has every faith in the people of 

Rotherham, who have come together year after 

year to support the toy appeal. There are people 

with little to give who still find some way to give 

what they can to the appeal. 

They also have the backing of Parkgate 

Shopping, as well as the local media, businesses, 

churches, and schools. 

If you would like to get involved, the next time 

you’re at Parkgate Shopping Centre look for the 

giving trees which have tags on them. Pick a tag, 

purchase a gift for that age range, and hand it in 

– unwrapped - to any store or the security office. 

You can also hand gifts in to your local library. 

The elves will then ‘go shopping’ from the 

donations and match the toys or gifts up with the 

recipients from their referral list based on what 

that child has said they may like from Santa. Ann 

and the team work extremely hard to ensure all 

children have a gift, soft toy and stocking filler, so 

even the smallest donations will go a long way to 

a child’s happiness at Christmas. 

What a lovely feeling waking up on Christmas 

morning knowing you have helped a Rotherham 

child or young person feel special.

Santa brings Christmas cheer to 

Rotherham Hospice families 

December may be a very busy 

time for Santa Claus, yet he 

always makes time to bring 

some Christmas cheer to 

Rotherham Hospice. 

Santa has been a supporter of Rotherham 

Hospice since before the hospice was even built 

27 years ago. For Santa, knowing he can spread 

a little Christmas magic during what can be a 

difficult time of year is what the holiday spirit is 

all about. 

Santa usually makes two special trips each 

Christmas – one to visit their Sunbeams children, 

and one to the Rotherham Hospice Christmas fair 

to meet all the good little boys and girls. 

Sunbeams is Rotherham’s only bereavement 

support group specifically for children and teens. 

It’s a safe place to come together with others who 

understand what the children are going through, 

whether that’s losing a loved one or seeing them 

being cared for at Rotherham Hospice. 

Through activities and talking, the hospice 

team help children cope with their grief and 

remember their loved one in a positive way. 

Nine-year-old Luke* attended Sunbeams when 

he lost his grandad. After his eight sessions, 

Luke’s mum said that he was much calmer 

and talking about his feelings a lot more, which 

was something he’d struggled with before. At 

Christmas, Luke went along to the Sunbeams 

craft evening to make cards and keepsakes to 

put on the family Christmas tree in memory of 

his grandad. 

As with all Rotherham Hospice services, 

Sunbeams relies on the generosity of their kind 

supporters to keep going. 

This December, you are invited to the 

Rotherham Hospice Christmas Fair which 

will help boost festive funds for the hospice. 

Kindly sponsored by Henry Boot Construction, 

the fair takes place on Sunday 3rd December 

at Wickersley Old Village Cricket Club on 

Northfield Lane. 

Between 12pm and 4pm, there will be lots of 

fun, food, gifts and games galore. Book your 

children a slot to see Santa in his grotto where 

they can do Christmassy crafts at the Elf Station, 

write their wish list, enjoy a snack and drink, and 

receive a gift and photo with Santa. 

Or why not take part in the Santa Dash? The 

festive fun run event is back for 2023, so get your 

Santa outfit at the ready. It costs £5 to enter, plus 

any sponsorship you can raise.

Eric the donkey and friends set for 

new-look home 

In a quiet corner in Thurgoland, 

plans are underway to improve 

the lives of some rare breed 

animals – and the humans who 

have sought a moment’s solace 

there, too. 

Sunflower Sanctuary is home to Eric the sevenyear-old 

Poitou donkey, Bert the pygmy goat, 

and 102kg Nellie, dubbed the fattest sheep in 

South Yorkshire. 

It was set up in the summer in memory of two 

people connected to the village. 

The site, just off the edge of the Trans Pennine 

Trail, is managed by Richard Damms who has 

had rare breed animals for the last ten years. 

Over the years, the animals have become a focal 

point of village life, with people coming to sit and 

reflect or to escape the world around them. 

One person who would often walk his dogs in 

the area and sit for a while was Simon Ellis, who 

sadly died by suicide in May this year. Simon 

had a huge love of all animals and felt very lucky 

to live a very short walk from the field. In his 

memory, his wife and two daughters wanted to 

raise funds to improve the site and turn it into an 

animal sanctuary. 

The family asked if it could be named 

Sunflower Sanctuary after Simon’s favourite 

flower – which also happened to be the favourite 

of Richard’s partner, Alison, who passed away 

from ovarian cancer in September 2020. During 

the Covid lockdown, when Alison felt well 

enough, she would spend time with the animals 

who proved to be great therapy for her. 

Losing Alison devastated Richard’s life, but 

the animals are what keep him going and he’s 

incredibly committed to their welfare. 

Simon’s family have been fundraising to 

improve the small holding for the animals 

and enriching their environment, which will 

encourage more people to visit the lovely village 

of Thurgoland. 

Plans include erecting a new outbuilding for 

the animals to sleep in. There will also be new 

fencing around the site, plus an area of hard 

standing to make the area more manageable in 

wet and wintry conditions. 

Richard, a joiner by trade, has already been 

tinkering away in his workshop making wooden 

signs and benches. Throughout the winter, he will 

be sorting the land out to make the ground level. 

Then after Christmas, he’ll start on the building so 

it’s ready for spring. 

Next year, Richard also hopes to introduce 

more animals to the site, such as goats and 

lambs, with the future goal to foster or adopt 

abandoned farm animals. 

Simon’s family did the Manchester Half 

Marathon in October and will continue to raise 

funds throughout the festive period. The whole 

village of Thurgoland have already jumped on 

board to support the project. Thurgoland Out of 

School Club regularly take children down to see 

the animals and have organised a raffle to raise 

money. And Richard says he was humbled to 

find an envelope of loose change taped to the 

fence left by some local children who gave their 

pocket money to the project.

Your working rights 

over Christmas 

Santa and his elves won’t be the 

only ones busy working over the 

festive period. 

While some of us look forward to some 

downtime at Christmas, for millions of people it 

is business as usual. Workers in retail, hospitality 

and emergency services will be clocking in to 

keep essential services running. 

But if you’re on the rota to work over the 

Christmas period, what are your legal rights? 

Bank Holidays 

All workers are entitled to a statutory 5.6 weeks 

of annual leave per year. This is often split into four 

weeks or 20 days of leave plus eight days for the 

bank holidays. This reduces pro-rata for part-time 

or seasonal workers. 

However, there is no legal requirement for 

staff to automatically be off on a bank holiday if a 

business is remaining open. 

This year, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and 

New Year’s Day all fall on weekdays so there are 

no substitute bank holidays. If these are your 

normal working days, and your employer opens 

for business, then you are likely to be contractually 

obliged to work. 

Retail staff who work in a shop larger than 

280 square metres are legally entitled to have 

Christmas Day off under the Christmas Day 

(Trading) Act 2004. In recent years, many 

larger retailers have chosen to close at 4pm on 

Christmas Eve and reopen again after Boxing Day 

to give staff a longer break. 

Annual Leave Requests 

Some employers have a Christmas shutdown 

period where all staff are required to use their 

annual leave to cover those days. On the other 

hand, many employees might request the same 

days off over the holidays. 

Depending on the size of the workforce, it may 

be impossible to accommodate all conflicting 

requests and employers might implement a firstcome-first-served 

policy for requesting annual 

leave. 

You should give twice the amount of notice 


than the number of days off you are requesting. 

For example, if you want a week off, you should 

give at least two weeks’ notice. It may be wise to 

submit your Christmas annual leave requests early 

to ensure you are at the top of the pile. 

Hours and Overtime 

Employees can work a maximum of 48 hours 

each week unless they opt out of the limit. Staff 

are legally entitled to have at least 11 hours of 

uninterrupted rest between shifts and in seven 

days, workers must have one period of at least 24 

hours’ rest. 

Over the busy Christmas period with the 

addition of a reduced workforce, this can 

impact the frequency of shifts, late finishes and 

early starts. 

Remember that overtime is voluntary; you 

are not obligated to agree to work beyond your 

contracted hours. If employees do work overtime, 

there is no automatic legal right to increased 

rate of pay for the extra hours worked. Some 

employers might offer time off in lieu (TOIL) 

instead of extra pay. If an employer does offer 

increased overtime pay, part-time workers are not 

entitled to this until they have worked more than 

the normal average hours of full-time staff. 

Christmas Bonuses 

There is no legal entitlement to a Christmas 

bonus unless it is written in an employment 

contract. That said, if you have been regularly 

receiving a Christmas bonus over a period of time, 

or even something like a gift card or hamper, and 

your employer chooses not to do so anymore, you 

may be able to argue it has become a contractual 

right by reason of custom and practice. 

Aside from bonuses, all staff over the age of 

23 are legally entitled to the National Living Wage 

which is £10.42 an hour. Workers aged between 

16-23 are entitled to the National Minimum Wage 

which increases with age. 

There are exemptions to the law, including 

family members working for a family-owned 

business, trainees on government funded 

schemes, students on higher education 

placements, and the self-employed. 

Check Your Contract – Twice 

If you are unsure about anything relating to 

your employment, check your contract. The terms 

of contract should set out employment conditions 

such as rate of pay, contracted hours and 

days, holiday entitlement, length of employment 

(particularly for temporary or seasonal workers), 

any probationary period, and mandatory training. 

You should also have information about 

what procedures your employer has in place for 

grievances or disciplinary action.

Royal sail of 

approval for Pearl 

South Yorkshire charity, The Ethel Trust, had the 

pleasure of welcoming the royal family’s ‘trustiest 

anchor’ Princess Anne to officially launch their 

second barge, Pearl. 

The Princess Royal had flown 

into Sheffield by helicopter to view 

the new state-of-the-art community 

barge that will be used by the Ethel 

Trust for day trips and residentials for 

disadvantaged groups in the region. 

Having viewed the advanced 

technology on the 57-foot-long boat, 

including a hybrid engine assisted 

by solar panels, Princess Anne, an 

accomplished sailor, took over the 

steering from the skipper for the 

return trip into Victoria Quays. 

She was absolutely

good fun; there was 

lots of laughter, 

” 

“When we approached Princess 

Anne’s team to ask if she would like 

to have a go at steering, we thought 

she’d only do it for a few seconds. 

But she stayed at the helm for quite a 

while. It was only when a tight bridge 

was coming up that she thought it 

best she hand it back to the skipper. 

“As the skipper was turning the 

boat around, Princess Anne was 

out front leaning over the edge to 

judge the turning distance. She was 

absolutely fantastic and such good 

fun; there was lots of laughter,” 

said David Tuck, a trustee at The 

Ethel Trust. 

Back on shore, Princess Anne 

generously took time to talk to 

every one of the Trust’s volunteers 

individually, before officially naming 

the barge ‘Pearl’ by unveiling a 

commemorative plaque. 

The Ethel Trust was established 

in 1988 to provide unique waterway 

experiences for a range of groups 

including school children with 

disabilities, young people with 

mental health issues, adults with 

additional needs and elderly people 

in residential care. 

Since being built in 1993, their 

primary barge, Ethel, has done a 

sterling job of carrying passengers. 

However, plans for a second barge 

were announced in 2021 by the 

award-winning charity to expand their 

services to more people. 

It was made possible through a 

very generous legacy from a grateful 

passenger who wanted to ensure 

many more could benefit from what 

she had experienced. 

Pearl was designed and 

manufactured by Gary Cole of 

Warwickshire-based company, 

Colecraft Engineering. 

“We drew up specifications 

based on our existing boat and 

thought we’d be getting Ethel mark 

two. But the input from Gary means 

that Pearl has a completely different 

layout which has proven much better 

for use as a residential boat. 

“Ethel was never meant for 

overnight stays; the bunks were 

added in retrospect. But with Pearl, 

Gary started from scratch and has 

created a fantastic space that is 

completely accessible,” David said. 

Pearl has a level floor that runs 

right throughout so users with 

wheelchairs or limited mobility don’t 

need a lift to access the front open 

deck area. Even in bad weather, 

passengers can still have great 

views of the water from inside the 

cabin thanks to French doors and 

large windows. 

There is also a fully accessible 

bathroom big enough to 

accommodate a wheelchair-user 

and their carer and containing a 

full-size shower cubicle. Plus, a fully 

equipped kitchen, eight beds, plus a 

separate dorm for the crew. 

The addition of Pearl means the 

Trust can now run trips throughout 

the year from their two docks: 

Victoria Quays on the Sheffield 

& Tinsley Canal, and Stanilands 

Marina in Thorne on the Stainforth 

& Keadby canal. 

The service is run entirely by 

volunteers and the Trust are always 

looking for more people to join their 

team. They have seen an increase 

in people joining over the last year 

and now have a team of 40 people, 

a quarter of whom are women. They 

also have their first female skipper, 

Liz Cuckson, who started as a crew 

member then decided she wanted 

to do the practical training course to 

enable her to captain the barge. 

“You don’t need any previous 

experience with boats as full training 

is provided. Our volunteers mainly 

support the mental and physical 

health of our passengers so it’s 

more important to be interested in 

working with people. What makes 

volunteering here so interesting is all 

the different people you get to meet. 

“It’s really flexible and there 

are no set shifts. All we ask is that 

people spare two days a month. We 

publish a trips list and our volunteers 

let us know what days they can do 

around their other commitments,” 

David said.

with Wentworth 

Woodhouse in times 

gone by are supporting

For a donation of £50 or more,

chain for the mansion’s famed 

East Front. Blacksmiths at Ridgeway 

Forge in Attercliffe are handcrafting 

1,800 links using traditional methods 

to replicate a centuries-old chain. 

Donations have already come in 

from as far away as Australia - and 

many are being made in memory of 

family members who lived or worked 

at The Big House as far back as 

the 1800s. 

Hoyland-born historian, Jane 

Ainsworth, is one of those supporting 

the campaign after discovering 

an ancestor worked for the Earls 

Fitzwilliam for 30 years. 

While researching her family 

history, Jane found numerous 

links to Wentworth Woodhouse. 

Generations of men on both sides of 

her father’s family were miners who 

worked for collieries owned by the 

Earls Fitzwilliam and their families 

grew up in estate houses. 

Then she discovered that her 

mother’s great-great-aunt, Elizabeth 

Martha Horn, was a trusted servant 

to the Fitzwilliams for three decades. 

Elizabeth grew up close to Milton 

Hall, the Fitzwilliams’ family home 

near Peterborough, and Jane 

surmised the family must have 

recruited from local villages. 

In 1861, Elizabeth was listed as a 

24-year-old spinster chambermaid, 

one of 35 servants at Wentworth 

Woodhouse. Ten years later, she 

was a housemaid at the Fitzwilliams’ 

London home in Grosvenor Square. 

By 1881, aged 42, she was back at 

Wentworth Woodhouse and another 

ten years later, and still unmarried, 

she was the housekeeper in charge 

of three staff at Grosvenor Square. 

She later married widower checkweighman 

William Berry, another of 

the Earl’s trusted employees and left 

service to live in the Miner’s Lodging 

House in Elsecar. 

Elizabeth had a close relationship 

with older sister Hannah Maria and 

her daughter Mary Ann, Jane’s 

great-grandmother. 

“My grandma called her Auntie 

Berry and lived with her in Elsecar 

for a time. That’s how she met my 

grandad, Arthur Firth, who was hired 

to paint and decorate the house.” 

The initials of Jane’s parents, 

Edith and John Charles Hardy, will 

be imprinted on two links of the 

hand-forged chain being created for 

the East Front.

community and voluntary service, is 

currently running a short survey to 

collect opinions about adult social 

care services that are funded by 

Barnsley Council. 

Adult social care services are 

delivered to people aged 18 and 

above to help them live safely and 

independently. Services usually 

offer more practical support rather 

than medical help and are delivered 

in the home, care homes or 

community. 

Even if you’ve never used adult 

social care services, you can 

still have your say. They want to 

hear from people from a range 

of backgrounds with the aim of 

making sure people in Barnsley can 

access the care and support they 

need at the right time and in the 

right place. 

The short survey can be 

completed online in less than ten 

minutes. You’ll be asked a series 

of yes or no questions about 

things like whether you know what 

services are available, staying 

active in the community, and who 

to turn to when you need advice or 

information. 

All answers are anonymous, 

and you have until Friday 24th 

November to take part. After this,

You helped save the 

Yorkshire Trench! 

You may recall that back 

in the summer of 2021 

we covered the story of 

the Yorkshire Trench, 

one of a very few WWI 

trenches that still exist 

in its original location. 

Over 100 years after it was built, 

it had started to disintegrate due to 

changing water levels around the 

site in Ypres, Belgium. Retired army 

reservist, John Morrison, from Leeds, 

had started a crowdfunding appeal 

to raise money to save this window 

to the war. 

Alas, an entrance to one of 

the Yorkshire Trench’s dugouts 

collapsed earlier this year, limiting 

visitor access to the site. 

However, thanks largely to 

donations that Yorkshire people 

made to John’s appeal, the entrance 

was restored and the trench 

reopened to visitors in September. 

The 70-metre-long Yorkshire 

Trench is a unique historical and 

archaeological site. It was built by the 

French in 1915 but maintained by the 

49th West Riding Infantry Division, 

mainly soldiers from Sheffield and 

West Yorkshire, which is why it 

adopted the name Yorkshire Trench. 

The 49th occupied the trench 

until the end of the First World War 

in 1918. After that, it was lost for 

many years under a sea of brambles. 

That was until development of 

an industrial estate on the site in 

1992. It was excavated where an 

underground shelter, passages and 

chambers were discovered. 

Then in 1998, further investigations 

took place where the bodies of 

around 200 soldiers were found. 

Only one of those could be identified, 

a French soldier whose metal dog 

tag hadn’t disintegrated. 

After deciphering this was indeed 

the site of the former British front line, 

the trench was recreated by the In 

Flanders Field Museum at the turn 

of the millennium. Volunteers rebuilt 

the trench as the soldiers would have 

done almost 100 years before using 

sandbags and duckboards. 

Ever since, the site has been 

one of fascinating military interest 

to visitors from across the world. 

However, standing water was a 

real problem in the war and still is 

today, which is what caused the 

trench to disintegrate. 

It wasn’t eligible for UK grants, 

so crowdfunding was the only way 

to save it. John raised over £17,000 

in his crowdfunding appeal which 

he gave to the In Flanders Field 

Museum to rebuild the crumbling 

dugout entrance. Further donations

another €40,000 to the pot. 

The stairwells have been renewed 

to improve accessibility, and there 

is now better lighting to the dugout 

so visitors can see inside it. Above 

ground, there are gravel paths which 

mark the layout of the underground 

passages and chambers in 

the trench. There are also new 

information panels around the site 

detailing further historical facts. 

John said: “When I mention the 

First World War and the Yorkshire 

Trench, the first thing most people 

say is, ‘my uncle, my grandad, my 

great grandad was wounded, or 

killed, or an unknown in Ypres.’ It’s 

a place in our collective memory. 

For those people, donating gave 

them a forum to remember a family 

member lost to the war. For me, 

it’s a reminder of the price that 

freedom costs. 

“After listening to people and 

their stories and reading so many 

individual accounts and diaries, I 

realised that there was only one 

salient where so much misery, 

murder and mud was compressed 

into so small a place – and that 

was Ypres.” 

The works have ensured the 

careful preservation of a WWI 

relic, while also helping the region 

to continue telling the historically 

accurate story of one the Western 

Front’s most notorious war zones. 

But these measures have only 

touched the surface. There weren’t 

enough funds to fully restore the 

trench’s crumbling sandbags. 

The estimated budget is €100,000 

so the long-term plan is to keep 

crowdfunding.

Lest we forget the 

poppy appeal volunteers 

The poppy has become the 

symbol of remembrance, a way 

for us to honour the armed 

forces community past and 

present. 

But we must also not forget the volunteers 

who give their time each November to run 

the poppy appeal on behalf of the Royal 

British Legion. 

The Rotherham, Rawmarsh and Parkgate 

branch of the Royal British Legion is run by 

a trio of people who are dedicated to raising 

awareness of the large military community 

in Rotherham, as well as remembering all 

those who have served and sacrificed across 

the country. 

Veterans Ron Moffett MBE and Cheryl Jones, 

and Ron’s wife Sally are the three poppy appeal 

organisers for Rotherham who co-ordinate the 

annual event in the borough. 

Over the last three years, they have raised 

over £100,000 from poppy sales in supermarkets 

across their three areas: Rotherham East, 

Rotherham West, and Wentworth. 

But there is more that goes into organising 

the poppy appeal than just turning up and 

waiting for donations from the public. 

It involves endless hours of preparation, 

ordering stock for the supermarket stalls, taking 

poppy packs into schools, making up poppy 

boxes and delivering them small shops or bars, 

marking up and logging all collection tins that 

are sent out across the town, and organising the 

volunteers who will be manning the stands. 

After the appeal has finished, they must then 

collect all tins, poppy boxes, and school packs, 

count and bank the cash, log all accounts and 

send everything back to the British Legion. 

Wearing a poppy is a very personal choice, 

reflecting individual experiences and personal 

memories. It is never compulsory but is greatly 

appreciated by those who it is intended 

to support. 

The poppy appeal helps the Rotherham, 

Rawmarsh and Parkgate branch to ensure the 

continuity of vital services and support for our 

service personnel, veterans and their families 

here in Rotherham. 

Donations from each poppy go towards 

providing support in many ways, from 

befriending services for those who are isolated, 

help with finances and housing, mental wellbeing 

support to transition to civilian life, or physical 

recovery programmes after injury and illness. 

The Rotherham, Rawmarsh and Parkgate 

branch also acts as a voice for the armed forces 

community, ensuring that servicemen and 

women are honoured, respected and have their 

needs listened to. 

In October, they organised a veterans’ 

seminar at Rotherham Town Hall for a second 

year. Based on the theme ‘working together is 

working smarter’, the seminar was attended by 

many organisations who assist veterans and 

their families, such as the NHS, Walking with the 

Wounded, Department for Work and Pensions, 

The Forces Employment Charity, and Op NOVA. 

Former High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, 

Lieutenant Colonel Mac McPherson MBE was 

instrumental in helping organise the event, which 

was kindly hosted by Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr 

Robert Taylor. 

Cheryl Jones said: “We heard from some 

amazing speakers and it was interesting to 

hear their role they play in looking after our 

armed forces veterans community. By sharing 

information of the role each charity plays, it gave 

a better understanding to other armed forces 

charities and professional services.”

seminar and any charities linked with the 

armed forces wanting to getting involved can

Winter will soon be here but the garden has been 

confused by the warmth of the late Indian summer 

this year. 

Roses, passionflower and 

honeysuckle have been flowering 

well beyond their normal season, 

as have lavender, Verbena 

bonariensis and Penstemon which 

add strong splashes of purple to the 

autumn garden. 

In fact, the mild weather enabled 

me to pick a pretty little posy of rose 

buds, holly berries, lavender and 

herbs to place on top of my son’s 

wedding cake at the end of October. 

Parthenocissus henryana and 

the Japanese maples enchant with 

their fiery reds while elsewhere in the 

garden leaves turn through various 

shades of butter yellow, orange 

and russet. 

Berries abound, a feast for 

hungry birds lighting up deciduous

No doubt many of the red ones

the UK in flocks in the winter looking 

for berries. 

Garden birds will need an 

energy boost as temperatures drop. 

Feeders and water bowls should be 

cleaned and refilled regularly. It is a 

good time to empty bird boxes and 

clean them before the next nesting 

season starts. Some garden birds 

may use the boxes to roost in during 

the winter. 

As it has been so mild, it is easy 

to forget about the tender plants in 

the garden. Remember to bring in 

pelargoniums and citrus plants and, 

anything that is tender but too heavy 

to move, wrap up against the worst 

of the weather. 

Tidy up the garden, putting the 

last of the leaves into pierced bags 

to make leaf mould, and clean 

your tools. If you have a bonfire, 

remember to check for hibernating

As the end of the year 

approaches, our thoughts turn 

towards the festive season, to gifts 

to be made and ways to enhance 

the house. 

Every year I enjoy making my 

own wreath for my door; sometimes 

friends join me too for a little 

workshop. I like to use foraged plant 

material from the garden reusing, 

where possible, an old wire frame 

or willow base covered with florist’s 

moss. An overlapping layer of holly, 

secured with twine, onto which I 

twist a long strand of variegated ivy, 

creates a good background. Make 

up some little bunches of evergreen 

leaves including Euonymus, holly, 

bay, rosemary and Pittosporum 

to brighten up the wreath. Wire 

in securely. Coloured stems of 

Cornus (dogwood), seed heads 

Heps of Rugosa Rose 

Blue monoprint of seeds and ferns 

and feathers can be pushed in 

and larch or fircones wired up and 

added. If the birds have left some 

berries, these can be added nearer 

to Christmas as they may go black if 

cut too early. 

Crab apples make lovely jelly, 

sloes from the hedgerows make 

great Sloe Gin, and hedgerow 

jelly (using blackberries, rosehips, 

damsons, elderberries, haws, rowan 

berries and crabapples) is delicious. 

For myself, I have been 

printmaking in recent years often 

using ferns, seed heads and 

leaves from the garden to make 

monoprints, as well as drawing 

inspiration from the birds and 

plants in my garden so many of my 

presents are garden themed but in 

print form! 

Whatever you do in the garden 

this festive season, enjoy it.

Fudge 

Ingredients 

397g tin condensed milk 

150ml milk 

450g demerara sugar 

115g butter 

20cm square tin lined with baking parchment 

Flavour ideas: vanilla, Irish liqueur, mince pie, white 

chocolate and raspberry 

Method 

Place the ingredients into a large non-stick 

saucepan and melt over a low heat, stirring until 

the sugar dissolves. 

Bring to a steady boil for 10-15 minutes, stirring 

continuously and scraping the base of the pan. 

The mixture should reach 113-115°C on a sugar 

thermometer. If you don’t have one, drop a little 

mixture into a bowl of ice cold water - if it forms a 

soft, round ball that doesn’t stick to your fingers 

then it should be ready. 

Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 5 

minutes. If you want to add flavours, do so now. 

Beat the mixture until it just loses its shine and 

becomes very thick (about 5-10 minutes). The 

longer you beat, the crumblier the fudge will be. 

For smooth fudge, beat until it comes away from 

the sides of the pan and sticks well to the spoon. 

Press into the prepared tin with the back of a 

spoon and leave to set before cutting into squares. 

Truffles 

Ingredients 

200g dark chocolate (70% cocoa) 

200ml double cream 

25g unsalted butter 

Flavours: spiced or coconut rum or Irish liquer (1- 

2tsp) or 2 drops coffee/orange essence 

Coatings: cocoa powder, desiccated coconut, 

chocolate sprinkles, chopped nuts 

Method 

To a large bowl, add chopped chocolate. 

Gently heat the cream and butter in a saucepan 

until butter melts and cream is simmering point. 

Pour over the chocolate and stir until smooth.

If you’re looking for fine 

dining at a fair price 

this festive season, you 

must pay a visit to The 

Wharncliffe Restaurant 

in Rotherham. 

A sophisticated restaurant 

offering a quality dining experience, 

The Wharncliffe is Rotherham’s 

hidden gem. 

Where else in the town centre 

could you find dishes like moules 

mariniere, roast brill with crab crust, 

or ox tail raviolone for a fraction of 

the cost that you’d expect to pay? 

But the most remarkable thing 

about The Wharncliffe is that 

everything is cooked by some of the 

town’s most promising young chefs 

and served by smartly dressed 

front-of-house learners from 

Rotherham College.

the catering and hospitality 

curriculum. But by opening the 

restaurant to paying customers, 

students also receive real-life 

work experience which helps 

build additional skills to improve 

their employability. 

Many people often have a 

missed preconception about dining 

at a student training restaurant. 

But at The Wharncliffe, you could 

be in any top restaurant around 

the country and experience always 

exceeds expectations. 

With an innovative menu, the 

enticing entrees have been chosen 

to test the skills and creativity of 

the trainee chefs and change every 

four weeks to reflect the seasonal 

produce available. Everything is 

made from scratch, from the stocks 

and sauces to pasta and patisserie, 

and students use ingredients 

like truffles, fresh seafood and 

game birds. 

Students are taught by a team 

of tutors who have all cut their teeth 

at some fine establishments before 

moving into teaching. 

Behind the scenes, The 

Wharncliffe has three kitchens 

– two production and one skills 

kitchen – where catering students 

learn their craft through hands-on 

practical work. All equipment is 

industry standard, such as rationale 

ovens, sous vide water baths, and 

commercial grills so students don’t 

feel like a fish out of water when 

they move into paid employment. 

The professional cookery 

courses are led by production chef, 

Marco, who has been a chef for 

30 years working in Michelin star 

restaurants and cooking for royalty, 

and experienced chef lecturer, 

Charlie, who was previously a 

private chef for high end clients for 

many years. 

Catering students learn about 

everything from food safety to 

butchery and poultry preparation. 

But the course also teaches skills 

like teamwork, patience and 

being responsible. 

Ellie has just returned for her 

second year of college and the 

17-year-old is already looking 

towards a bright future. “I started 

baking in lockdown with my mum 

and realised I might like a career 

in it. My school careers advisor 

recommended Rotherham College 

because of the high standard 

of the catering course and The 

Wharncliffe. I want to travel the 

world in the future and I know now 

that cheffing is a career that could 

take me there,” she says. 

As learners progress through 

their time at college, they are taught 

more advanced techniques and 

supervisory skills. Andreas is in his 

third and final year of college and 

decided on a career in catering after 

watching his parents establish a 

popular fish and chip shop in Maltby 

that has been a success for over 20 

years. 

“At college, we started with the 

basics in my first year and how 

to make everything so there’s 

no wastage, but now I’m making 

things like crab bisque. As level 

three students, we’re learning more 

about what skills are needed to run 

a restaurant and how to manage 

others which will help me with 

my plans to take over the family 

business and open another branch 

in the future.” 

Every catering and hospitality 

student comes to college wanting 

to be the next Gordon or Jamie. But 

many students who begin on the 

professional cookery course find 

their skills are better suited to food 

and beverage services.

or break a restaurant. Hospitality 

students at Rotherham College 

receive thorough training from 

restaurant manager, John, who 

previously worked in food and 

beverage management in the hotel 

sector before joining Rotherham 

Owen, Ellie and Andreas 



College 15 years ago. 

As well as learning how to 

keep guests happy and creating a 

welcoming restaurant environment, 

students are also taught about 

things like cellar management, 

serving wines, making barista 

coffees, menu design and taking 

payments. Transferrable skills are 

also a big part of the course, such 

as appearance, behaviour, and 

communication. 

Nineteen-year-old Owen is 

one student who realised through 

work experience elements that he 

preferred to stay cool and collected 

in the restaurant rather than face 

the heat of the busy kitchen. He’s 

now on the level three hospitality 

supervision and leadership course. 

“College has given me so 

much confidence but also the job 

skills needed. I work part-time 

at Clumber Park as a food and 

beverage advisor which involves 

serving a variety of food and 

drinks from takeaway coffees to 

ice creams and dishes off the 

grill menu. After college, I’d like 

to progress to a team leader role 

and then move into city centre 

restaurants in the future.” 

The Wharncliffe is open to 

customers three lunchtimes a week 

and two evenings. Their two menus 

feature please-all plates that 

prove excellent value for money 

considering the exceptional level of 

food and service. 

The lunch and evening menus 

differ slightly. Lunchtime main 

courses on the autumn menu 

include dishes like fish and chips, 

or chicken schnitzel on a bed of 

spaghetti. While in the evening 

there is a more elevated menu with 

dishes like pan fried duck breast 

with Parisienne potatoes, creamed 

peas, caramelised button onions 

and a madeira sauce. 

Throughout December, 

before the college closes for the 

festive break, The Wharncliffe 

will be running a three-course 

Christmas menu. 

There is a draught bar and 

barista coffee service, plus a full 

wine list to complement your meal. 

As we look to 2024, catering 

and hospitality students are 

planning their themed events which 

take place each month and offer a 

five-course tasting menu for less 

than £30.

has beautiful fruit notes.

Pinot Grigio is one of the most popular wines

crisp and fruit forward. It sits as bit heavier in the 

mouth than Pinot Grigio and has lovely acidity 

which makes it great to pair with smoked salmon, 

if you fancy that for a festive starter.

Teroldego I knew I’d found it. It’s 

medium-bodied, light on the palate 

with exuberent aromas of red fruit, 

cherries in particular. What I love 

is that it has lovely tannins that

a cut above, The Masons Arms 

at Thorpe Hesley is the place to

This charming village pub has recently been 

taken over by the owners from the nearby Barley, 

so you can expect to receive a warm welcome 

and quality food that is beautifully presented. 

The Masons Arms’ menu has been thoughtfully 

designed to bring a new flavour to the local 

gastro scene. There is a mix of British and 

mediterranean inspired dishes, with pub 

favourites having been given a twist of vitality 

and uniqueness. 

Everything on the menu is homemade, with the 

talented team of chefs displaying great skill and 

finesse in their cooking. 

Starters include the likes of green shell 

mussels cooked Spanish style, pigeon breast 

with raspberry jus and black pudding fondant, 

and prawn and scallop raviolo in a prawn bisque. 

Their range of delectable main dishes feature 

hearty favourites like homemade pies, fish and 

chips, steaks, and burgers. But there are also 

elaborate dishes like confit duck leg with an 

orange and grapefruit glaze, Greek style sea

There would be no grassroots 

football without the tremendous 

work that volunteers do year in, 

year out. 

They are the beating heart of the footballing 

community who give their time, effort and 

energy to make a positive impact on the game. 

As a way of thanking them for their 

dedication, the Sheffield and Hallamshire 

County FA hosted their annual Grassroots 

Football Awards at Hillsborough Stadium in 

October hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield’s 

Andy Giddings. 

The county FA received over 160 

nominations, so it was extremely tough for the 

independent panel to judge. This year, as well 

as a winner in each of the 12 categories, there 

was a highly commended prize. 

Club of the Year 

Kiveton Park FC 

Kiveton Park FC are the beating heart of their 

community. They ensure all teams and players 

are treated equally and encourage players to 

progress from youth teams to adult teams. This 

year that became a reality for both the men’s 

and women’s teams, providing additional 

positive role models for others within the club.

Gail Fletcher, Silver Strikers 

Gail founded Rotherham-based women’s 

recreational football team, Silver Strikers, from 

scratch with no funding. Today, there is a team 

of over 30 women of mixed ages and abilities, 

most of whom have never played football 

before or have returned to the game after many 

years away.

Grounds Team of the Year 

Malcolm Geal, Scissett FC 

Dubbed the ‘grass whisperer’ by everyone 

at the club, Malcolm has turned his club’s pitch 

from ‘The Deep’ to a field of dreams in just three 

years without any formal training or experience 

in grounds management.

Thanks to Helen, the Barnsley & District 

School FA is now a sustainable district football

Steven Beckitt, Swinton Spartans 

This special award was presented to the 

family of Steven ‘Mini’ Beckett who passed 

away from cancer earlier this year. 

Even during his illness, Steven remained 

committed to junior football and would 

watch games via FaceTime and plan 

training sessions. 

He taught his young players that, even 

during the hardest times of your life, you can 

still give your love, time, and effort to making 

other people’s lives better. 

He truly was a grassroots hero.

Former professional footballer Vance is a 

true inspiration to all. Nobody has ever had a 

bad word to say about him and respect levels 

when he is on the field of play are always at the
