Get your festivities off to a holly, jolly
start with the help of Barnsley Museums.
With five free sites to explore, plan lots
of festive fun with crafts, culture and
seasonal activities for all the family.
A Very Victorian Christmas
at Cannon Hall Museum
Steeped in Georgian
splendour, the glorious
setting of Cannon Hall
Museum is even more
magical at Christmas time as
the former residence of the
Spencer-Stanhope family is
richly decorated in-keeping
with Victorian traditions.
Bah humbug! That old miser,
Ebeneezer Scrooge, is back
on Saturday 2nd and Sunday
3rd December for his popular
retelling of A Christmas Carol. Join
Chris Cade for some audience
participation in this heart-warming
family performance as he journeys
through his Christmases gone-by
with the ghosts of his redemption to
find that missing festive spirit. There
will be four 30-minute sessions
each day including a relaxed
session at 12pm and two with a
British Sign Language interpreter
on the Saturday. Tickets are £3 per
child and £6 per adult and must be
booked in advance.
Every weekend in December,
have A Very Victorian Christmas
as Santa stops by to meet the
children of South Yorkshire. Hear
the Christmas story as told by a
Victorian nursery maid and play with
traditional Victorian toys, followed
by a chance to meet and receive
a gift from Santa. Tickets are £15
per child and must be booked in
advance. There will be six time slots
each day, with a relaxed session
at 11am.
For adults, there will be two
festive wreath making sessions
on Thursday 23rd November
Shop around the Earl’s
workshops at Elsecar
For a unique Christmas
shopping experience, visit
Elsecar Heritage Centre
this festive season to get all
your shopping wrapped up
in one.
Once a thriving industrial
ironworks run by the Earl
Fitzwilliam of nearby Wentworth
Woodhouse, today the historical
workshops at Elsecar are filled
with a range of independent
retailers selling a variety of wares
from clothing and shoes to gifts
and Wednesday 6th December
between 6pm-8pm priced at £47
per person. Join a local florist
to make your seasonal door
display, with all materials and
refreshments included.
There will also be festive music
played in the ballroom on Saturday
16th December between 12pm-3pm
to make your visit extra magical.
Set in 70 acres of historic
parkland and beautiful landscaped
gardens, Cannon Hall Museum is
the perfect place to enjoy a winter
walk. There’s a fully accessible path
and sweets.
Take a break from shopping at
the two on-site cafes, and there is
also a beer shop where you can
sample one of the many bottled or
draught ales before you buy. The
popular Earl’s Tipi will be open
daily on Thursday 23rd November,
with live music every Friday and
Saturday night.
And don’t forget you can find
out more about the history of the
site on a Reyt Royal Tour every
Saturday and Sunday at 2pm,
priced at £5 per adult.
