OVERSEAS military service 

is difficult to balance with 

motherhood, but Vanessa 

Weenink says it was worth it to 

serve her country. 

“It was a huge sacrifice to 

make,” she said. 

As a medical officer, Weenink 

achieved the rank of major 

when she was called up to serve 

two tours in Afghanistan and 

one tour in East Timor from 

2005 to 2007. 

“I’ve always wanted to serve 

my country.” 

Weenink said she could cope 

with being away from her 6 

month old son with the understanding 

she was caring for 

other vulnerable children in 

need. 

In the middle of her second 

Afghanistan tour Weenink was 

stationed at the New Zealand 

base in Bamyan province. While 

in a convoy on her way to a 

clinic near Bamyan city, one of 

the vehicles hit an improvised 

explosive device (IED). 

The New Zealand soldiers 

sprang into action, suspecting 

they were about to be 

ambushed. Luckily nothing 

happened and there were no 

injuries caused by the IED. 

“It really made me realise that 

I was willing to do anything 

that was necessary to protect 

the people around me.”

Mum’s ‘truly uplifting’ Christmas gift

SARAH JUNGHENN was in 

the neonatal intensive care unit 

with her second child Maeve 

when she received a “truly 

uplifting” gift – a care package 

from the charity One Mother to 

Another. 

“This was the second time in 

NICU for us,” said Junghenn. 

“Our then 5-year-old had spent 

3 weeks there when he was born. 

This time round, although we 

knew the ropes, was that much 

more difficult. 

“We had another little person 

at home to look after and the fact 

that it was Christmas time was 

hard,” said Junghenn. 

“Maeve was born the week 

before Christmas and we were in 

NICU until the new year. It was 

a very emotional time and 

I spent 12 nights sleeping in at 

the hospital every night with 

Maeve. 

“The only night I went home 

was Christmas Eve, so I was 

able to wake up on Christmas 

morning with my 5-year-old. A 

heartbreaking decision.” 

Back at the hospital on Christmas 

morning 2021, Junghenn 

found a One Mother to Another 

care package on the chair next to 

Maeve’s cot. 

“It was incredible . . . truly 

uplifting and made the 

first Christmas with our newest

Former army medic becomes MP

A time she is 

proud of during 

her military service was helping 

an Afghan girl get surgery for 

a cleft lip. She and the medical 

team at Bagram raised money 

to transport her to the base for 

surgery. 

“I’ll never forget that. That was 

a very special moment.” 

Weenink said the surgery 

would have changed the girl’s 

fortunes, at the time, as a physical 

deformity like a cleft lip could 

be a mark against you in 

Afghanistan. 

In East Timor, Weenink remembers 

fondly when the Australian 

Navy bought her medical 

team a “delicious” dinner after 

helping to contain a norovirus 

outbreak on one of their ships. 

“That was a big deal for me 

because at the time we had been 

on ration packs.” 

Weenink is originally from Canvastown, 

Malborough. She loved 

her childhood there. Weenink’s 

mother raised her and her sister 

solo. 

“That was really, I think, formative 

for me that community is 

a big, important thing.” 

Weenink moved to Blenheim 

when she was 12 and attended 

Marlborough Girls College 

where she became deputy head 

girl. 

“I was very proud of myself for 

that.” 

She graduated from Otago 

University with a Bachelor of 

Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery 

and a Postgraduate Diploma in 

Public Health. 

Weenink first moved to Christchurch 

as a working medical 

student in 1999, shortly before 

joining the army. 

Weenink now lives in 

“I was willing to do anything that was necessary 

to protect the people around me.”

for Pegasus Health, a Canterbury-based 

charitable health 

provider, and on the clinical governance 

committee for national 

telehealth service Whakarongorau 

Aotearoa. 

Weenink was a member of the 

Labour Party until she joined the 

National Party last year. 

A key reason for the move 

was Weenink’s realisation 

she found National more of a 

“broadchurch” and “moderate” 

ideologically than she previously 

believed.

Refugees gaining tech skills 

thanks to college support

TEN refugees from 

Afghanistan, Eritrea and 

Somalia have started learning 

how to use and navigate 

technology, with the help of 

Hagley College and TechMate. 

The adult students were 

given eight laptops by the 

charity TechMate to start a 

basic beginner computer skills 

programme held on Tuesday 

evenings at the college. 

Diversity services manager, 

Anne Galloway said the 

donations would be a big help. 

“Many former refugees and 

migrants have no financial 

resources to buy laptops and 

devices. They often have 

children at home and all want 

to have a good education,” she 

said. 

“Often, they don’t know 

how to access any information 

on the device either. No device 

and no knowledge of how to 

use devices is a barrier. 

“We’re thankful for the 

opportunity to equip families 

with devices so they can learn 

needed and life-long skills. 

“It is great to see former 

refugees and migrants 

walking away with the 

devices, smiling.” 

Hagley College has a range 

of programmes for supporting 

RECYCLE: Joseph Prue, Techmate’s office administrator and a volunteer working 

on restoring a laptop to give to those who need it.

and employment of refugee 

background learners and

through a partnership 

with Recycle A Device. The 

company restores laptops that 

would otherwise go to landfill 

and diverts them to volunteers 

for repurposing. 

Said a volunteer: “I 

heard about volunteering 

for TechMate through the 

grapevine, about three months 

ago. I liked what they offered 

and wanted to participate. 

“I also enjoy learning about 

technology so I can pass that 

knowledge on to others who 

want or need to learn.”

few rough edges, but overall it’s 

hard to fault in a small car that’s

roads. Suspension noise could

Notice for consultation on a proposed Enrolment Scheme amendment for 

Addington Te Kura Taumatua 

The Ministry of Education has been working with the Addington Te Kura Taumatua Board to establish an 

amendment to their enrolment scheme to mitigate the risk of over-crowding at the school as required under the 

Education and Training Act 2020. 

As part of this process, we are consulting with the school’s community and with people living in the area for which 

the school is a reasonably convenient school. 

Under this scheme, students will be able to enrol if they live within the proposed home zone. The enrolment of outof-zone 

students is governed by the provisions of the Education and Training Act 2020.
