From Afghanistan
to the Beehive
National's new Banks
Peninsula MP Vanessa
Weenink was once an
army medic serving
in hot spots like
Afghanistan and East
Timor. She was also a
Labour Party member
before switching
political allegiances.
She talks to reporter
Dylan Smits
OVERSEAS military service
is difficult to balance with
motherhood, but Vanessa
Weenink says it was worth it to
serve her country.
“It was a huge sacrifice to
make,” she said.
As a medical officer, Weenink
achieved the rank of major
when she was called up to serve
two tours in Afghanistan and
one tour in East Timor from
2005 to 2007.
“I’ve always wanted to serve
my country.”
Weenink said she could cope
with being away from her 6
month old son with the understanding
she was caring for
other vulnerable children in
need.
In the middle of her second
Afghanistan tour Weenink was
stationed at the New Zealand
base in Bamyan province. While
in a convoy on her way to a
clinic near Bamyan city, one of
the vehicles hit an improvised
explosive device (IED).
The New Zealand soldiers
sprang into action, suspecting
they were about to be
ambushed. Luckily nothing
happened and there were no
injuries caused by the IED.
“It really made me realise that
I was willing to do anything
that was necessary to protect
the people around me.”
time overseas giving medical
support to the local population
and New Zealand Defence
Force (NZDF) personnel.
Mum’s ‘truly uplifting’ Christmas gift
• By Sasha Watson
SARAH JUNGHENN was in
the neonatal intensive care unit
with her second child Maeve
when she received a “truly
uplifting” gift – a care package
from the charity One Mother to
Another.
“This was the second time in
NICU for us,” said Junghenn.
“Our then 5-year-old had spent
3 weeks there when he was born.
This time round, although we
knew the ropes, was that much
more difficult.
“We had another little person
at home to look after and the fact
that it was Christmas time was
hard,” said Junghenn.
“Maeve was born the week
before Christmas and we were in
NICU until the new year. It was
a very emotional time and
I spent 12 nights sleeping in at
the hospital every night with
Maeve.
“The only night I went home
was Christmas Eve, so I was
able to wake up on Christmas
morning with my 5-year-old. A
heartbreaking decision.”
Back at the hospital on Christmas
morning 2021, Junghenn
found a One Mother to Another
care package on the chair next to
Maeve’s cot.
“It was incredible . . . truly
uplifting and made the
Smithy - Endless Winters & The Spring of ‘22
by Wayne Smith & Phil Gifford
Wayne Smith is arguably the finest rugby brain in the world - a man the
players he coached dubbed ‘The Professor’. In Smithy: Endless Winters
& The Spring of ‘22, we’ll hear from not only Wayne, but also the women
and men who took the Ferns to a World title. In this long-awaited
Ferrymead
memoir, Wayne Smith will tell his best, most entertaining, insightful, and
amusing anecdotes from an amazing career in in the game. We’ll look
inside the Black Ferns’ World Cup triumph, which saw Wayne go from a
man entitled to free bus rides with his Gold Card, to the dancing leader of
a diverse, vibrant group of players and coaches who won all Kiwis’ hearts.
SUPPORT: Sarah Junghenn was in the neonatal intensive
care unit with her second child Maeve in Christmas 2021
when a care package made her day.
and happiness for our loved ones
at Christmas, unfortunately for
some, who will be separated
from family and riddled with
stress and fear, that’s not the
reality,” said Reid.
“We don’t want them to feel
unseen or invisible. We want
them to know they are not
alone.”
The charity regularly supports
13 hospital wards in the South
Island with more than 5000 care
packages each year.
Former army medic becomes MP
• From page 1
Weenink said she will take the
communication and endurance
skills learned in the military into
Parliament.
Weenink replaces Labour’s
Tracey McLellan as the Banks
Peninsula MP.
She held a narrow
83 vote
majority on election
night which
was extended to
396 after special
votes were
Vanessa
Weenink
counted.
A time she is
proud of during
her military service was helping
an Afghan girl get surgery for
a cleft lip. She and the medical
team at Bagram raised money
to transport her to the base for
surgery.
“I’ll never forget that. That was
a very special moment.”
Weenink said the surgery
would have changed the girl’s
fortunes, at the time, as a physical
deformity like a cleft lip could
be a mark against you in
Afghanistan.
In East Timor, Weenink remembers
fondly when the Australian
Navy bought her medical
team a “delicious” dinner after
helping to contain a norovirus
outbreak on one of their ships.
“That was a big deal for me
because at the time we had been
on ration packs.”
Weenink is originally from Canvastown,
Malborough. She loved
her childhood there. Weenink’s
mother raised her and her sister
solo.
“That was really, I think, formative
for me that community is
a big, important thing.”
Weenink moved to Blenheim
when she was 12 and attended
Marlborough Girls College
where she became deputy head
girl.
“I was very proud of myself for
that.”
She graduated from Otago
University with a Bachelor of
Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
and a Postgraduate Diploma in
Public Health.
Weenink first moved to Christchurch
as a working medical
student in 1999, shortly before
joining the army.
Weenink now lives in
“I was willing to do anything that was necessary
to protect the people around me.”
Matthew who she married in
2018. She has a mixed family of
five children aged between 16
and 23.
“They are mostly very
independent,” she said.
Weenink has held many
roles relating to health and
said her experience in health
sector governance will be
helpful in holding government
departments accountable.
“It was useful to be able to
watch what people were saying
but also what people weren’t
saying.”
Weenink was a board member
for Pegasus Health, a Canterbury-based
charitable health
provider, and on the clinical governance
committee for national
telehealth service Whakarongorau
Aotearoa.
Weenink was a member of the
Labour Party until she joined the
National Party last year.
A key reason for the move
was Weenink’s realisation
she found National more of a
“broadchurch” and “moderate”
ideologically than she previously
believed.
Refugees gaining tech skills
thanks to college support
• By Sasha Watson
TEN refugees from
Afghanistan, Eritrea and
Somalia have started learning
how to use and navigate
technology, with the help of
Hagley College and TechMate.
The adult students were
given eight laptops by the
charity TechMate to start a
basic beginner computer skills
programme held on Tuesday
evenings at the college.
Diversity services manager,
Anne Galloway said the
donations would be a big help.
“Many former refugees and
migrants have no financial
resources to buy laptops and
devices. They often have
children at home and all want
to have a good education,” she
said.
“Often, they don’t know
how to access any information
on the device either. No device
and no knowledge of how to
use devices is a barrier.
“We’re thankful for the
opportunity to equip families
with devices so they can learn
needed and life-long skills.
“It is great to see former
refugees and migrants
walking away with the
devices, smiling.”
Hagley College has a range
of programmes for supporting
RECYCLE: Joseph Prue, Techmate’s office administrator and a volunteer working
on restoring a laptop to give to those who need it.
and furthering the education
and employment of refugee
background learners and
new migrants, including
math, English, health studies,
driving and languages.
Said TechMate community
coordinator
Vanessa
Simpson:
“This is a
lovely thing
to be involved
with,
knowing
that we are
Vanessa helping,
Simpson
supporting,
and making a difference in
people’s lives.
“Without a laptop, refugees
would not be able to learn
or, just as importantly,
communicate with their
family members who are still
overseas.”
Simpson has been working
with the charity for about a
year, which offers free lessons,
laptop refurbishments, repairs
and digital inclusion to those
in need.
The charity has given away
just under 160 laptops this
year, which is made possible
through a partnership
with Recycle A Device. The
company restores laptops that
would otherwise go to landfill
and diverts them to volunteers
for repurposing.
Said a volunteer: “I
heard about volunteering
for TechMate through the
grapevine, about three months
ago. I liked what they offered
and wanted to participate.
“I also enjoy learning about
technology so I can pass that
knowledge on to others who
want or need to learn.”
Adrenalin-charged MG4 hits rivals for 6
THE MG4 Electric arrives here
with a big reputation and equally
large ambitions to, in cricketing
speak, hit many of its compact
EV hatch rivals for 6.
A four-strong model line-up
starts at $46,990 for the 51kW
price leading Excite – that’s a
steal with the $7k clean car rebate
that the incoming government
intends to unplug. The volume
seller is expected to be the
Excite, with upmarket Essence
versions powered by a beefier
64kW battery and retailing for
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
$51,990 and $54,990 respectively,
with the latter variant supplied
for this road test. The panacea
for chronic EV range anxiety
sufferers is a 77kW battery
version of the Essence with an
all-electric driving range of
around 530km, but comes with
an amped up $63,990 asking
price.
The adrenalin-charged MG4
XPOWER is the performance
hero of the range. It’s easily
the fastest and most potent
production MG in New Zealand
to date. It is capable of
0-100km/h in a vivid 3.8
seconds, boasts dualmotor
power of 320kW
and 600Nm of torque
– and all for $69,990.
It’s a performance car
steal, qualifying for the
full clean car discount of
$7,015, reducing the price
to $62,975.
The 150kW electric power train
is responsive and goes hard and
strong on demanding hill climbs.
Tyre rumble, especially on coarse
road surfaces, becomes niggly
on longer trips. Smoothness
and super silence, with plenty of
clout to effortlessly punch past
slower moving traffic, adds to
an already appealing vehicle. A
little unnerving, even with the
acclaimed 435km all-electric
driving range, is how quickly
the battery is spent if you overindulge
in the car’s addictive
performance.
The single-speed transmission
works its magic when you find
yourself in a driving situation
where a swift and assertive pulse
of power is needed. The 51kW
and 64kW battery models have
brisk 0-100km/h sprint times of
7.9 seconds. If that isn’t enough,
you can always find the extra
$9k and make the step up to the
77kW battery version. For the
money you get an impressive
180kW of power, enough to
propel this model through the
0-100km/h dash in 7 seconds.
A modern and thoughtfully
designed cabin is well put
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build
Quality 7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Styling
7; Value for money 9; Safety – Five Star ANCAP crash rating.
Qualifies for a $7k clean vehicle rebate until Dec 31, 2023.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
together, although the plethora
of hard plastics unmasks the
vehicle’s budget origins. I wasn’t
a fan of the synthetic leather
interior trim – it looked and felt
a bit tacky. I preferred the more
pleasant and practical cloth seats
of the price-leading Excite.
The MG4 makes every
technology post a winner with
cleverly integrated, interactive
dual screen technology
with configurable 7’’ driver
display, and a 10.25” floating
infotainment screen fitted to the
Essence model. It also features
a 6-speaker audio system with
Apple Car Play and Android
Auto. Rotary Gear Selector
Essence models gain satellite
navigation, 360 degree parking
cameras, height-adjustable
loading floor, wireless phone
charging, Bluetooth and autodimming
rear view mirror.
MG Pilot enables this
model to make an emphatic
safety statement and takes
it to the competition,with a
comprehensive package of safety
equipment. Among the more
notable kit are Active Emergency
Braking with Pedestrian and
Bicycle Detection Adaptive
Cruise Control with Traffic Jam.
Being a heavier electric vehicle,
the test car is well anchored to
the road, yet surprisingly agile.
Body roll is kept on a short
well-controlled leash even under
hard cornering. Direct and
well weighted steering with just
the right balance of road feel
makes this impressive EV hatch
compelling buying. There are a
few rough edges, but overall it’s
hard to fault in a small car that’s
huge fun to punt over undulating
roads. Suspension noise could
be more effectively hushed
over patchwork and pot holed
surfaces, and is an area where
more refinement would move the
MG4 up another notch.
