WHAT ABOUT OUR
FREE CONCERT DAVE!
• By Dylan Smits
IN 2015, Foo Fighters lead
singer Dave Grohl made a
pledge to the 27,000 strong
crowd at AMI Stadium: The
next time they played in
Christchurch it would be for
free.
Grohl had looked around the
city during his stay and was
staggered by the damage the
February 2011 earthquake had
caused.
“If you motherf**ckers sing
as loud as you can, I promise,
you have my word, that the Foo
Fighters will come back. We’ll
find some nice big space outside
somewhere. Next time we come
back, we’ll play a free f**cking
show for y’all,” he said.
Grohl added: “It might be
2027, but I’m saying next time
it’s on me.”
Mosque
inquest:
Survivors
needed
surgeons
• By Danielle Clent
AN AMBULANCE officer broke
down in tears describing trying
to treat worshippers who needed
surgeons, not paramedics, after
being shot in the terror attack at
the Al Noor Mosque.
Craig Stockdale was one of the
first St John ambulance officers
at the mosque after the mass
shooting on March 15, 2019.
He became emotional
answering questions at the
coronial inquest yesterday about
potentially life-saving treatments
for injured people in the Deans
Ave mosque, saying they would
not be carried out in a mass
casualty situation because of the
skill and time involved.
“In my heart, I knew, what
these people needed was a
surgeon, not a paramedic on the
periphery trying to help them,”
he said.
“They needed a hospital and we
as a group, we knew that and that
was our sole aim.”
Stockdale said the mosque’s
hallway was “littered” with
bodies and paramedics had to
step over people to help those
who had survived.
THE DRIVER of a car which ploughed
through a pole and a barrier at the
Halswell shopping area miraculously
escaped serious injury.
The vehicle lost control on Halswell
Rd and came to a halt on a grassed area.
Parts of the vehicle were scattered. The
driver fled the scene.
A police spokesperson said a patrol saw
a vehicle speeding and driving dangerously
on Halswell Rd about 3.15am on
Friday, but it was not pursued because of
the manner of driving.
Police have now identified a person of
interest and inquiries are ongoing, the
spokesperson said.
The car was not stolen.
Speeding driver crashes; flees scene
• From page 1
The Coroners Court earlier
heard a senior policeman, who
was watching a delayed feed
of the terrorist’s livestream
of the massacre, relayed the
information in error in a
panicked transmission over
police radio.
For a few minutes, police and
paramedics at the scene thought
the terrorist was returning to the
mosque, but they soon realised it
was a mistake.
It was one of the times where
Stockdale felt the security situation
at the scene changed.
Stockdale told the court police
at the scene did not tell him the
information was incorrect, which
was “unsettling”.
There was no debrief about
the situation and they all “just
ploughed on”.
Just minutes later at 2.15pm,
the first two St John paramedics
entered the mosque with an
armed police escort to assess the
situation.
Soon after, injured survivors
began being taken from the
mosque, but Stockdale said he
“absolutely” still believed the
gunman might come back.
He said if he had been told it
was a false alarm, it may have
reduced his concern.
The inquest will examine
the following 10 issues over six
weeks:
• Events of March 15, 2019
from the commencement of the
attack until the terrorist’s formal
interview by police
• Response times and entry
processes of police and ambulance
officers at each mosque
• Triage and medical response
at each mosque
• The steps that were taken to
apprehend the offender
• The role of, and processes
undertaken by, Christchurch
Hospital in responding to the
attack
• Co-ordination between
emergency services and first
responders
• Whether the terrorist had any
direct assistance from any other
person on March 15, 2019
• If raised by immediate family,
and to the extent it can be
Meth
found
in dog,
trainer
banned
CANTERBURY greyhound
trainer John McInerney has been
banned for a year after one of his
racing dogs tested positive for
methamphetamine and another
was mistreated.
The Racing Integrity Board disqualified
McInerney (above) from
holding a greyhound training
licence for 12 months for failing
to produce a methamphetaminefree
greyhound. He was also
given a six-month concurrent
ban for failing to comply with
Greyhound Racing New Zealand
health and welfare standards.
He was ordered to pay $6026 to
the RIB and $2500 to the adjudicative
committee.
But the ban will be academic –
whilst he is still a licence holder
Darfield-based McInerney
effectively retired at the start
of the racing season in August,
handing over his dogs to son
Jason to train.
The hearing into McInerney
heard his dog Alpha Riley was
found to have methamphetamine
in its system after routine drug
testing.
Investigators also say another
dog, Impressive Isla, was found
in “clear and visible pain and
distress” in October last year.
McInerney was also investigated
last year after handing 11
greyhounds over to a rehoming
kennel, eight of whom presented
with severe signs of neglect and
mistreatment.
He has previously been
prosecuted and fined after
five of his dogs suffocated to
death inside a van on a Cook
Strait crossing. He also has a
long history of his dogs testing
positive for banned substances,
with incidents in 1997, 2001,
2010, 2013, 2017, and 2023.
Concert promise
‘got overlooked’
• From page 1
People who were at the 2015
concert are questioning why the
2024 event isn’t free.
The Star asked Grohl and the
band’s management why they
weren’t backing up on the pledge
through New Zealand tour
promoter Frontier Touring last
week.
Frontier Touring communications
director Maria Robinson
said yesterday she still had
not received a response from
Grohl or Foo Fighters management.
The Christchurch concert
is one of the nine shows in
Australia and New Zealand
starting in Perth on November
29, following the release of
the American rock band’s
eleventh studio album But Here
We Are.
As part of their 2018 world
tour, the Foo Fighters played
their only New Zealand show in
Auckland.
But before the tour started, the
band’s bassist Nate Mendel told
Stuff the lack of a Christchurch
concert was an oversight. He
also made reference to Grohl’s
promise of a free concert.
“That promise got overlooked
this time,” Mendel said then.
Grey Power concerns
over cashless buses
• By David Hill
THE PROSPECT of cashless
buses will cause anxiety for
older residents, Grey Power’s Jan
Pentecost says.
She was reacting to
Environment Canterbury’s
decision to move to cashless
buses next year, in the interests
of staff safety.
Passengers on the Greater
Christchurch Metro Network
will be unable to pay by cash
from the second half of 2024, as
part of the implementation of
the National Ticketing Solution
(NTS).
“Many older people have used
cash all their lives,’’ Pentecost
said.
“There are a group of our
older people who go down to
the ATM on pension day and
withdraw most of their money
and pay for everything by cash,
because that is what they have
always done.
“When they are 80-odd, they
get really anxious about all these
changes.’’
Over-65s can use their gold
card to ride for free from 9am
on weekdays and all weekend
and public holidays, so many do
not have a Metro card,
Pentecost said.
ECan customer service and
public transport marketing
manager Thomas McNaughton
said Metro operators had
advocated removing cash from
buses and ferries for some time.
“Over the last 18 months,
staff have worked closely with
operators and other partners to
improve network safety for both
staff and customers.
“This has been in response
to an increase in incidents and
complaints around safety.’’
He said about 12 percent of
passenger trips were paid for by
cash.
The new NTS will provide
payment options such as debit/
credit card, a pre-paid card, or
smart devices – but not cash.
Patrons will be able to top-up
pre-paid cards at service centres
and online.
Pentecost said overseas
research has shown there will
always be a group of people
unable to use technology,
whether due to cost or being
unable to learn.
“As we move to a cashless
society and digital inclusion,
it feels like old people don’t
matter.’’
WORK IS about to start on the
contentious 10km/h speed limit
changes on Gloucester St.
From Monday, contractors
will be installing speed cushions,
planters, seating and other street
furniture in the section between
Colombo St and Manchester St.
The city council says the work
is designed to make Gloucester St
more people-friendly.
Ninety per cent of the cost is
being funded through Waka
Kotahi’s Streets for People
programme, aimed at making
low-cost and rapid changes
to streets ahead of permanent
upgrades.
The site was chosen because
Gloucester St is home to the
Performing Arts precinct and
connects to New Regent St,
as well as Tūranga, Te Pae
Christchurch Convention Centre,
Cathedral Square, and will also
become home to the new Court
Theatre when it opens in May
next year.
City council transport
planning and delivery manager
Jacob Bradbury said the trial will
help the city council understand
how the changes will affect the
area before any permanent work
is considered.
“We are very keen to hear what
people think about the changes
once they’re installed so we’re
really encouraging feedback
during the trial,” he said.
“We’ll also be actively
Man arrested following
kindergarten burglaries
A MAN has been arrested in
relation to a series of burglaries
targeting kindergartens and
early childhood centres across
the city.
The 34-year-old man faces
nine charges of burglary by
night.
He is due to appear in the
district court next Thursday.
The alleged incidents span
from late September to this
month. During this time, police
received a number of reports
of stolen planter boxes, worm
farms and gardening equipment.
“Inquiries are continuing, but
police want to thank the people
who have provided information
that allowed our investigations
to progress,” a police spokesperson
said.
It comes after a Givealittle
page was set up for the Sydenham
Community Preschool after
it was the target of a burglary in
early October.
Parent Jon Sharpe set up the
fundraiser to replace the stolen
items.
Sports equipment, gardening
supplies, maintenance tools and
educational resources were reported
stolen from the preschool
on October 7 and 8.
Said Sharpe: “This is a huge
“Community preschools have
to work extra hard to stay afloat
and rely on grants to be able to
provide children with equipment
and resources for learning.”
Sharpe said there were several
preschools hit over the same
weekend, including Woolston
Preschool.
“Unfortunately, the police
resources are stretched too thin
and they weren’t able to investigate,
which is frustrating,” he
said.
Sharpe said the burglary had
left “the staff and tamariki devastated”.
Said preschool curriculum
leader Kylie Jay: “It isn’t just
and we’re wondering about what
else these ‘unwelcomed’ visitors
did.
“It is a big priority and focus
of ours to give our children the
right space to learn and grow in.
“That includes the community
children and give back to the
The preschool lost seedlings,
“People in the community
the setting up of the Givealittle
Double fatal crash father on trial for
• By Emily Moorhouse
A FATHER has been accused of
encouraging dangerous driving
after a family gathering that led
to a collision causing the death of
his son and another young man.
Mark Nicholl was dining with
family and friends at a bar in
Halswell when he and his family
members allegedly began street
racing, leading to a double fatal
collision that not only claimed
two lives but also left two of his
other sons seriously injured.
The 55-year-old is on trial in
the district court facing two
charges of being a party to
dangerous driving causing death
and one of dangerous driving
causing injury.
His son Mark Nicholl jnr,
30, and family friend William
Clark, 29 were both killed while
another son Jayden Nicholl was
seriously injured. A third son
Shanan Nicholl suffered a traumatic
brain injury.
Shanan originally faced the
same charges as his father but
was considered unfit to stand
trial due to his brain injury and
was discharged.
Nicholl senior’s nephew Ricky
Nicholl was also involved and
has pleaded guilty to the same
charges, as well as a charge of
attempting to pervert the course
of justice by swapping seats with
another man following the crash.
Prosecutor Christina Hallaway
opened the case describing the
collision between a Subaru and
ute that resulted in the “avoidable”
deaths of two young men.
It is the Crown’s case that although
Nicholl senior wasn’t the
driver of the Subaru at the time
of the crash, he “intentionally encouraged”
the driver, Shanan, to
drive dangerously and therefore,
he can be held liable under the
term “party liability”.
Hallaway said on the evening
of September 25, 2021, about
midday Nicholl senior and his
family and friends were dining
at Armadillos in Halswell before
leaving in a group just before
7.30pm.
Nicholl snr, Nicholl jnr,
Shanan Nicholl, Jayden Nicholl,
Ricky Nicholl, William Clark
and Matthew Gibbons were
among those who left in four
cars, travelling in a convoy.
As the group travelled towards
the Halswell Junction and Shands
Rd intersection they began
racing, overtaking one another,
breaking heavily at traffic lights
and speeding excessively when
they turned green, the Crown
alleged.
During this time, she alleged
some of the men jumped out of
the driver’s seat and climbed into
the passenger seat, taking turns
racing each other.
As the convoy approached the
Halswell Junction and Shands
Rd intersection, the Jeep, driven
by Ricky, went speeding ahead
and began “fishtailing”, appearing
to have lost control, according
to a witness.
From the other side of the
road, approaching the intersection
was a couple in a ute towing
a trailer. They were travelling
home from the Halswell New
World at about 7.30pm and
both described hearing a loud
screeching as they approached
the intersection.
As the couple looked around
to see where the screeching was
coming from, they described seeing
the Jeep fishtailing towards
them.
As they watched the Jeep, they
were hit head-on by the Subaru,
allegedly driven by Shanan,
which had spun out of control
and was travelling sideways
towards them.
allegedly encouraging street racing
Jayden, Nicholl jnr and Clark
were passengers in the Subaru,
Hallaway said.
The man driving the ute
described the collision as
happening very quickly and
said he didn’t even have time to
realise what was happening as
the Subaru hit him.
He estimated he would have
been travelling about 65km/h as
he was towing a trailer and was
anticipating the lights turning
orange at the intersection.
The Crown alleged the Subaru
would have been travelling well
over 100km/hr as it rotated
clockwise and crossed the
centerline, into the path of the
ute.
The Crown also alleged that
Nicholl snr, who was following
the Subaru in a Holden, was
aware of the crash that involved
his sons, but continued driving
home.
After the collision, the driver
of the ute checked his partner
was okay and they both climbed
out of the passenger door side,
as the driver’s door could not be
opened.
Once the pair saw the severity
of the crash, they began to check
the four men in the Subaru, some
of whom were unconscious or
making groaning sounds.
The woman described a scene
of chaos as people began turning
up to the crash scene, including
some girls who she said began
screaming once they saw the state
of the men in the Subaru.
The man managed to pull one
person from the vehicle and
waited with him on the side of
the road as emergency services
began arriving.
The man said he only had
minor injuries such as bruising,
while the woman required
surgery and suffered whiplash, a
concussion, scarring to the back
of her eye and distorted hearing
in her left ear.
Nicholl jnr and Clark died
at the scene while Shanan and
Wealthiest iwi files $95.5m loss,
reflects on last 25 years
• By Will Trafford
TWENTY-FIVE years after its
$170 million settlement, Ngāi
Tahu has witnessed a tenfold, or
1000 per cent, increase in assets.
Now recognised by a TDB
Advisory report as New
Zealand’s wealthiest iwi, its
leadership acknowledges that the
group is not completely shielded
from the macroeconomic
headwinds affecting the global
economy and, by extension,
Aotearoa.
Despite its impressive growth,
the group has filed a $95.5m loss
this financial year, largely related
to property write-downs in the
real estate market but business
has been tough overall according
to the group.
“I think we’ve done well, considering
the challenges – we’ve
had some natural disasters come
in,” said chief executive Lisa Tumahai,
underscoring the group’s
resilience amidst
adversity.
Revenues
climbed to
$372.8m, buoyed
by sectors like
farming, seafood,
tourism,
Lisa
Tumahai
and property
but so too did
operating costs,
which jumped to $128.1m, with
borrowing costs at $18.5m.
Paper losses at the country’s
wealthiest iwi have seen them
book a $100m loss on the 25th
anniversary of settlement,
mostly related to the country’s
volatile property market.
A $42.7m loss from property
investment revaluations, led to a
trading shortfall.
“The cost of living, the rising
cost of interests . . . Farming and
forestry had been exposed to
higher costs and falling export
prices,” chair Mike Pohio said.
“We see that house prices are
down. That has slowed demand.
And that has therefore slowed
the number of properties or
residential sections that our
property division sells,” he
added.
Even as the group grapples
with these challenges, Pohio
identifies strengths in the group’s
diversified portfolio.
“Seafoods and tourism have
had great years,” he stated.
Property ventures like the
Mānia industrial land in
Dunedin and Te Pā Tāhuna in
Queenstown have shown strong
performance, with property
assets contributing a $54.5m
surplus despite setbacks like
the costly water damage in the
Uku development in Auckland’s
Hobsonville.
Tourism initiatives like
Shotover Jet and the All Blacks
Experience faced a decrease
in surplus, yet demonstrated
resilience, and farming yielded a
$9.4m surplus.
“Our bottom line showed a
reduction in valuations,” Pohio
remarked.
“However, it’s at times like
these, the tough conditions that
we’ve faced, that we’d benefit
from a diversity in our portfolio.”
A sour note was also the tough
decision to shutter the Mānuka
honey business, Oha Honey,
which had seen its production
plummet to 244 tonnes from
the previous year’s 491 tonnes,
culminating in a substantial
$35.9m operating loss.
As Tumahai reflects on the
25-year journey, she places
ECONOMY:
Paper losses
have seen
book a $100
on the 25th
importance on celebrating past
successes and looking forward
with ambition.
“For this year, we’re celebrating
the last 25 years post-settlement.
It’s crucial we look back on all
the gems, the highlights that
have happened over the last 25
years and celebrate those,” she
said.
Proud of the organisation’s
strategic direction, Tumahai
is Te Kounga Paparangi, our
Tumahai reflects on her
tenure with the iwi: “I’ve had an
. . . to see some of these really
foundational things that will be
New
evidence
allowed
in Watson
appeal
THE COURT of Appeal has
ruled lawyers for the man
convicted of murdering Ben
Smart and Olivia Hope can
include extra expert evidence in
his appeal next year.
The two
Scott Watson
has long claimed
his innocence
and is set to
launch his latest appeal in June.
At a hearing last month,
Crown lawyer Madeleine
Laracy argued Watson’s legal
team needed to explain why
they should be allowed to
include two new expert reports
about hairs, thought to belong
to Hope, found on a blanket on
Watson’s yacht Blade.
Watson’s lawyer Nick Chisnall
argued the full hearing
panel would be better placed to
decide on their relevance.
In a decision released on
Monday, the Court of Appeal
agreed.
“It is, at this stage, extremely
difficult to assess the cogency of
(the) evidence. The panel which
hears Mr Watson’s appeal will
be in a far better position to
assess what, if any, cogency
attaches to the challenged
evidence after it considers all
other relevant evidence,” the
decision says, noting Laracy
had accepted the court would
have difficulty ruling on
admissibility without knowing
what other evidence would be
covered at the appeal.
“ . . . The Crown’s application
to exclude the evidence can
be pursued at the appeal if
necessary.”
A MAN charged with aggravated
burglary has walked free partway
through a trial, while the victim,
who was allegedly hit in the
head with a hammer during
the burglary, was sent to jail for
calling a lawyer a “f***wit”.
Things got heated at a trial in
the district court when burglary
victim Hamish Lucas* began
swearing while being questioned.
They got even hotter during
cross-examination when he was
asked about the defendant, Marcus
Bourne*, having slept with
Lucas’ girlfriend.
The self-employed father-ofthree
responded by picking up
a water jug and throwing water
on Bourne before being forcibly
removed back to the dock.
“Usually,
(that’s) the area
that the defendant
resides, not
the complainant,”
Judge Tom
Gilbert said in a
recently released
decision describing
how Lucas
ended up being
sent to prison for eight days for
“serious” contempt of court.
Judge Gilbert said he had never
seen anything like what happened
in his 25 years in criminal
courts and in his seven years as
a judge, while defence lawyer
Allister Davis told NZME being
called a f***wit was “just the
job”.
“He (Lucas) was getting a bit
smart, and I had to ask him
certain questions about his girlfriend
playing ‘hide the sausage’
with my client.
“That’s when he really lost his
rag,” Davis said.
Bourne was on trial earlier
this year facing a charge of aggravated
burglary in August
2021. An initial trial was earlier
abandoned when Lucas failed to
show up.
It was alleged Bourne and
another unknown person went
to Lucas’ house, apparently over
a low-level drug exchange that
went wrong.
When Bourne and his associate
arrived at Lucas’ house, there
was talk about taking one of his
vehicles. Lucas told them that
would not be happening, and
he was struck in the head with
a hammer, allegedly by Bourne,
while the other person smashed a
window with the piece of wood.
Bourne denied he was involved
and said he’d been at home
with his parents on the night in
question.
Judge Gilbert said in his recent
decision that Lucas was using
“unfortunate language” while
giving evidence, but, given the
stress of the situation, he was not
overly concerned.
Lucas was asked to calm down
and give evidence without resorting
to swearing.
His volatility “ramped up” after
the prosecution finished and
Davis started questioning Lucas.
Judge Gilbert activated the
duress alarm to speed up his
request for security officers in
court.
“That message was taking a
wee while to be actioned, and I
became sufficiently concerned
that I activated the duress alarm
to speed that along.”
Lucas’ demeanour then “went
up a gear” when the question
about his girlfriend was raised.
He was asked again to settle
down, and when asked once
more, he “arced up”.
Lucas got up, left the witness
box and advanced five or six
metres towards where Bourne
was seated in an aggressive and
abusive fashion, threatening him.
Court security and Corrections
officers intervened in what
appeared to be an imminent
assault, but Lucas picked up
the water jug and emptied it on
Bourne.
The jury retreated and Lucas
was taken into custody while
Judge Gilbert decided what to do
with the charge and, secondly,
what to do with Lucas.
While in the cells, Lucas
apologised for his outburst but
indicated it was unlikely he
DRAMA: The
burglary victim
called the
accused’s lawyer
‘a f***wit’ before
pouring a jug of
water over the
accused. Judge
Tom Gilbert
sent the man to
prison for eight
days for ‘serious’
contempt
of court and
dismissed the
aggravated
burglary charge.
PHOTO: GETTY
would be able to control his
anger if the trial continued.
Judge Gilbert exercised the
jurisdiction available to him
to dismiss the charge against
Bourne. He said his decision
was based on it being the second
attempt at a trial but, more
relevantly, because he thought
there was little if any chance
of the matter being able to get
through to verdict because of
Lucas’ volatility.
“In a system that is so
overstretched already, I am not
prepared to allow this matter to
continue.”
In deciding an outcome at the
subsequent contempt hearing
for Lucas, Judge Gilbert set a
starting point at five weeks in
prison, reduced in recognition
of Lucas’ apology, his genuine
regret and the fact his outburst
had led to the defendant walking
free.
Judge Gilbert said the decision
wasn’t made lightly, but Lucas’
conduct had to be marked in a
way that reflected the gravity of
the situation.
Teen appeals fatal punch sentence
• By Emily Moorhouse
A TEENAGER who killed
another teen by punching him
in the head has appealed his
three year jail sentence, arguing
the punishment he received is
“not a good fit” for the crime he
committed.
Armani Williams, 18, was
jailed for three years after fatally
punching 18-year-old Levi
Haami at the Moorhouse Ave
Countdown car park on December
4, 2021. Williams was 16 at
the time.
Williams had been driving
past Haami, who was urinating
in the car park when Haami
questioned Williams about looking
at his private parts.
Williams then approached
Haami and delivered the fatal
blow to the left side of his mouth,
causing him to fall backwards
and hit his head on the concrete.
Haami suffered catastrophic
brain injuries and died in
Christchurch Hospital the next
day.
In May last year, Williams
pleaded guilty to a charge of
manslaughter, which had been
downgraded from murder at the
High Court in Christchurch.
Williams appealed his sentence
through his lawyer Ethan
Huda, arguing the five-year
starting point the judge adopted
FATAL: Levi Haami died after being punched in the Moorhouse Ave Countdown carpark in
December 2021.
at his sentencing was too high
and that his “youth and background
merit higher reductions”.
Huda referred to teen killer
Mark Nagel, who was sentenced
to two years imprisonment with
the option to apply for home
detention last month for killing
61-year-old Anthony Kelly with
a martial arts-style kick to his
head in the central city.
He said that in Nagel’s case it
was a group attack against an
elderly person, where the judge
took a starting point of four-anda-half
years imprisonment.
In Williams’ case, however, the
punch was delivered to a young
man who was “not frail” and he
received a starting point of five
years imprisonment.
“There’s a symmetry in these
cases,” Huda said, pointing out
the sentencing judge for Nagel
arrived at that starting point by
assessing a number of relevant
cases.
However, Crown prosecutor
Kerry White said Williams
accepted a sentence indication
that stated a starting point of five
years would be adopted.
She said Williams approached
Haami with a “high level of
aggression” and anger before
delivering a forceful blow to the
left side of his mouth.
While White accepted Williams
had a difficult upbringing,
This report was produced by Open
Justice – Te Pātītī, a Public
Interest Journalism initiative
funded by NZ on Air
she said there were periods when
he was in the care of a family
who loved and cared for him.
Huda said his client was 16 at
the time of the offence, was diagnosed
with ADHD and had told
a probation officer he “deserves
to be locked up” for what he did.
Huda said neurological
development may not be
complete until the age of 25 and
said Williams received a 10 per
cent discount for his youth when
a discount of at least 15 per cent
should have been available.
“One young man looking at
another young man urinating,
it’s silly, it’s sad,” Huda said.
Huda argued that a shorter
term of imprisonment is
warranted for his client due
to his youth and background
factors.
Family and friends of Haami
attended the hearing, wearing
shirts with his face on.
The panel of judges thanked
Haami’s family and friends
for attending court and
acknowledged how difficult it
is to sit through a hearing of
this kind. They reserved their
decision.
HINDSIGHT IS a wonderful
thing. I’ve thought that a few
times listening, watching and
reading some of the media
coverage of the coroner’s inquest
into the 2019 mosque attacks.
It’s obviously something that
Mike Ardagh has thought too.
If the name rings a bell – he’s a
professor of emergency medicine
at Otago University, Christchurch.
He’s also a specialist in
the emergency department at
Christchurch Hospital.
He’s been in the news a lot over
the years. And he’s in the news
again with some pretty strong
comments about the inquest into
the mosque shootings, which
has been going for the last three
weeks and is expected to go for
another four weeks.
In a nutshell, he’s saying that
the way it’s being run is unfair
and mean to the emergency responders
who have been hauled
in to give evidence. Those are the
words he’s using to describe it –
“unfair and mean”.
He says ambulance and police
staff are being treated as if
they’re the ones on trial. Saying it
appears to be all about winning
arguments instead of finding
facts. And, from what I’ve seen, I
think he’s spot on.
There was one line of questioning
in particular that I couldn’t
believe one of the lawyers representing
the victims’ families
asked. It was last week, when a
member of the Armed Offenders
Squad involved in the response
that day was on the stand.
Lawyer Kathryn Dalziel
wanted to know why he stopped
people outside the mosque from
going in after the shootings, and
he explained he didn’t know
who they were and there was a
risk that one of them could have
been an offender. Or a ‘sleeper’,
so someone pretending to be a
member of the mosque community
but actually being a terrorist
themselves.
And, as she told the court,
these people were desperate to
get inside and help.
She then went on to say this.
And this is the bit that staggered
me.
I’ll quote her directly. She said:
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
“My clients, and this is really
important to them, they want to
know, would you have been so
cautious about there being a possible
sleeper if you had been talking
to a group of white people?”
The report I saw said the AOS
member “appeared surprised by
that question”, which is probably
putting it mildly. But he
responded as you would expect
an AOS person to respond. He
said: “I would have dealt with the
situation the exact same way.”
Which, of course, he would’ve.
But this is what Mike Ardagh
is getting at. He’s saying the
whole approach seems to be
about challenging the emergency
responders. Prove to us that you
didn’t cock-up. That’s why he
thinks it is unfair and mean for
the emergency responders giving
evidence.
You can imagine how gobsmacked
the Armed Offenders
guy would have been with that
question. And, from the coverage
I’ve seen, it does feel like the lawyers
representing the victims and
families are doing what lawyers
normally do in criminal trials.
They create murkiness. They create
doubt. And we’ve seen plenty
of that so far.
As Ardagh says, the emergency
responders being questioned
and treated this way are good
people. They are not accused of
any crimes. But it seems, doesn’t
it – from the way they are being
spoken to and questioned – that
they are on trial.
In some respects, the response
that day itself is on trial. But how
fair is it that individual people –
who put their own lives on the
line that day – are questioned
and treated the way they are in
such a public way? I think it is
very unfair.
Because, as Ardagh points out,
many of these people are already
significantly distressed by what
they went through on that day.
And he reckons what he calls a
“more collaborative exploration”
would not only be better for the
responders in the dock, but it
would probably get more useful
information.
And I’m with him 100 per
cent. I think it is completely
unfair that individual emergency
responders are being asked to
publicly defend suggestions that
they were too slow, confused or
biased in their decision-making.
Big money raised for Cox’s treatment
• By Dave Di Somma
THE KATIE Cox Appeal is
now expected to be at about
$300,000 after a massive last few
days, including a Melbourne
Cup fund-raising luncheon at
Addington on Tuesday.
The 33-year-old Leeston harness
racing trainer and driver
is battling a rare form of lung
cancer, with a trust fund set up
to help pay for expensive medication.
She recently started her
first round of treatment.
Trust founder Craig Wiggins
told the 200 people at Tuesday’s
luncheon the total was already
at $195,000, after a number of
sizeable donations, including
$25,000 from Entain, $10,000
from TAB NZ and $5000 from
Harness Racing New Zealand.
On top of that the luncheon
then raised close to $100,000.
Money was raised from the
luncheon itself ($1200 for a table
of 10) as well as an auction featuring
about 50 items that had
been generously donated.
Cox was at the luncheon
which was also attended by
a who’s who of Canterbury
harness racing, including high
profile trainers, breeders, owners
and drivers.
It had been organised at short
notice by racing presenter Greg
O’Connor who MC’d the afternoon
and was involved in some
spirited banter with auctioneerfor-the-day
(and former junior
driver) Stevie Golding.
The highest bid was $8500
forked out for a trans-Tasman
horse flight with IRT, while a
service fee to multiple Group 1
winner King Of Swing sold for
$6000.
A trip for two to the world’s
richest harness race, the Eureka
in Sydney, fetched $4300, while
a 10 per cent lifetime share in
Levi (courtesy of Tim Vince)
raised $4000. Levi, a What
The Hill two-year-old, has had
one placing from three starts
and will race again as early as
tomorrow night.
A full driving set by 10-time
Kiwi champion and now USAbased
Dexter Dunn was also
offered up. It went for $1100.
The final tally from the
auction and luncheon isn’t
known yet but it will be “close
to six figures”, according to
O’Connor.
“It was a great vibe and
everyone has been extremely
generous – it was a very
successful day.”
Defending champs chances at
making semi finals hurt by rain
FORMIDABLE: A strong Elmwood team, including Louise
Oxnevad, take on defending champs Te Kura Hagley, who
need to win to secure a place in the play-offs.
• By Diane Keenan
DEFENDING champions Te
Kura Hagley face the possibility
of not making the semi-finals
of Premier interclub women’s
tennis due adverse weather
restricting this season’s
competition to one match to
date.
The final round-robin games
in the men’s and women’s
competitions will be played
this weekend, with semi-finals
scheduled for November 25 and
finals on December 2.
The weather has proved
frustrating, particularly for
the women, whose games last
Friday night were again rained
off, making it three out of four
round-robin matches cancelled.
“We were looking forward to
the new competition format, but
it doesn’t make much sense in
having playoffs based on only
two rounds of play,” Te Kura
Hagley’s Michelle North-Kelsen
said.
“However, it is what it is and
we are playing because we enjoy
our tennis.”
Te Kura Hagley needs to win
on Saturday against what North-
Kelsen describes as a formidable
Elmwood team to secure a place
in the play-offs. In the only competition
round played to date,
Te Kura Hagley was upset by
Bishopdale with Adele Aorangi
the defending champion’s only
player to secure a win.
“Some of us haven’t been playing
a lot in the off-season and it
certainly showed that the young
players in the Bishopdale team
had been hitting a lot more balls
than us. They played really well
and thoroughly deserved their
win,” North-Kelsen said.
Elmwood’s line-up includes
Abby Mason, along with Louise
Oxnevad and Tessa McCann,
who are both playing the Caro
Bowl competition in Auckland
on Friday nights and flying back
to Christchurch for Saturday
interclub.
Waimairi and Bishopdale lead
the women’s competition by one
point and they will play each
other at Waimairi, while Cashmere
and Shirley, both needing
a win to secure their semi-final
spot, play at Cashmere.
Tennis Canterbury’s Bevan
Johns said fine weather last Saturday
allowed for results in two
of the three men’s competition
match-ups, while Bishopdale
and Burnside Park shared points
after not completing their match.
The top four men’s teams are
Elmwood, Cashmere, Burnside
Park and Bishopdale.
Elmwood scored maximum
points in its win over Edgeware
Waimairi last weekend, while
Cashmere was equally convincing
against Te Kura Hagley.
This week’s men’s competition
is on Friday night, with competition
leaders Elmwood taking on
the talented Burnside Park team
at Elmwood.
The home team’s ranks were
boosted last week with the inclusion
of James Watt who played
top singles. Watt, standing at
208cm, hits the ball hard, moves
well and has great hands, Johns
said.
He and his brother, Ryan, who
plays in the club’s division one
team, have a long association
with the Elmwood club.
Watt, who is unbeaten in both
singles and doubles for his Caro
Bowl competition leading Next
Generation team, has returned
to his Melbourne base to train
and compete in money tournaments.
He has now qualified
to represent Elmwood in the
playoffs. Even without Watt this
weekend, Elmwood has a strong
pool of players including Elliott
and Lawrence Darling, Jamie
Garbett, Jack Tiller and Benji
McGillivray to call on.
Burnside Park has fielded Finn
Emslie-Robson, Jordan Edwards,
Emilio Gonzaga and Ricky
Kotepong as its singles players in
both of its matches, bringing in
club coach Remi Feneon for the
doubles.
Cashmere also used its top
player, James Meredith, to play
doubles in its win last weekend
against Te Kura Hagley. His
older brother Tim has been
filling Cashmere’s top singles
role with James playing Caro
Bowl for Cockle Bay where he is
unbeaten in singles.
This week Cashmere will take
on Edgeware Waimairi who have
a strong top singles duo of Paddy
Ou (Otago) and Nick Jenkins.
Te Kura Hagley this week plays
Bishopdale at Bishopdale.
Points
Men’s
Elmwood 32,
Cashmere 28, Burnside
Robertson’s All Blacks: What
will the team look like now?
The All Blacks are
gearing up for a
transformative chapter
under new coach
Scott Robertson. Luke
Kirkness looks at what
might lie ahead and
what the AB’s might
look like
ROBERTSON’S coaching style
is far different to Ian Foster,
characterised by his visionary
mindset, in which campaign
themes and imagery play a
prominent role. Unlike Foster,
Razor will embrace new-age
coaching methods and challenge
the status quo. His desire
to be himself and connect
with younger generations
sets him apart from more
conservative elements in rugby
administration.
Robertson’s coaching philosophy
is expected to be a blend of
traditional rugby values with
a sense of freedom and lack of
inhibition. He aims to make the
All Blacks a team that speaks to
younger generations both figuratively
and literally.
As he steps into his role,
Robertson brings with him a
seasoned coaching team of Jason
Ryan, Leon MacDonald, Jason
Holland, and Scott Hansen.
While Robertson has been tightlipped
about his game plan, he
has acknowledged the need for a
different approach in test rugby
compared to Super Rugby but
what will his side look like?
Scott Robertson’s (possible)
starting All Blacks line-up
Fullback: Will Jordan
All Blacks fans will finally
see Will Jordan unleashed from
fullback next year, with Beauden
Barrett joining Japanese club
Toyota Verblitz. Whenever Jordan
is on the field, he can’t stay
out of the action and things just
seem to happen. He has the x-factor
and that’s been shown on full
display at the World Cup, where
he was the leading try-scorer.
Reserve: Stephen Perofeta.
Honourable mentions: Zarn Sullivan,
Sam Gilbert.
Wingers: Mark Tele’a and
Shaun Stevenson
Mark Tele’a has been one of the
form wingers in New Zealand
over the past two years and
Shaun Stevenson is knocking
on the door. His ability to run
through defenders – not just
around them – is Ben Smith-like.
The man with uncanny footwork
has also developed a skilful kicking
game and is a safe pair of
hands under the high ball.
Stevenson, meanwhile, can
play on either wing and covers
fullback too. He had a breakout
year for the Chiefs and despite
being chased by NRL coach
Wayne Bennett, decided to stay
in New Zealand.
Honourable mentions: Emoni
Narawa, Caleb Clarke, Sevu
Reece.
Midfield: Rieko Ioane, Jordie
Barrett
Jordie Barrett can seemingly
play anywhere in the backline –
possibly to the detriment of his
desire to play in the midfield.
But he’s forming a powerful connection
alongside Rieko Ioane.
Barrett has a phenomenal skillset
and is renowned for his longrange
kicking ability and skills
under the high ball. He’s quick
and strong too, useful in both
attack and defence.
Ioane is a fan favourite and
for good reason. The speedster’s
exhilarating pace and strength
caught the attention of the All
Blacks selectors in 2016, and he
was selected for the Northern
Tour in November. Ioane hasn’t
looked back since and has been
one of the first selections for the
All Blacks since his debut. In that
time, he has proved to be a tryscoring
machine.
Reserve: Braydon Ennor. Honourable
mentions: Levi Aumua,
David Havili, Anton Lienert-
Brown, Quinn Tupaea.
First five-eighths: Damian
McKenzie
Arguably the best player
in Super Rugby Pacific 2023,
Damian McKenzie struggled
to get game time at the World
Cup behind Richie Mo’unga and
Beauden Barrett. With both stars
leaving New Zealand’s shores,
the firecracker McKenzie has the
chance to make the No 10 jersey
his own. The silky McKenzie is
great with ball in hand and has
electric footwork that sees him
frequently duck and weave away
from defenders.
A concern for Robertson
though will be that for the first
time in a long time, first fiveeighths
is a position in which
New Zealand doesn’t have a lot
of depth.
Honourable mentions: Josh
Ioane, Fergus Burke, Ruben Love.
Halfback: Cam Roigard
Irrepressible halfback Cam
Roigard played his way into the
World Cup squad through an
impressive 2023 Super Rugby
Pacific campaign. Roigard was a
revelation for the Hurricanes this
season after earning selection in
the All Blacks XV last November.
The 22-year-old is a constant
threat with the ball in hand, as
showcased during the pool stages
of the World Cup. He should get
the start over Finlay Christie.
Reserve: Finlay Christie.
Honourable mentions: Folau
Fakatava, T.J. Perenara.
No 8: Ardie Savea (captain)
Undeniably the best player in
the world, Ardie Savea should be
the first name on the team sheet.
Don’t be surprised if Robertson
opts to make Savea his captain.
But what may cause concern for
Robertson’s first squad is that the
Hurricanes loose forward is soon
heading to Japan – he returns
to New Zealand in June 2024.
The dynamic powerhouse has
continued to go from strength
to strength since making his All
Blacks debut against Wales in
2016. His combination of tremendous
speed, athleticism and an
ability to stay alive in the tackle
is second to none and he always
leads from the front.
Honourable mentions: Cullen
Grace, Hoskins Sotutu, Akira
Ioane.
Openside flanker: Sam Cane
Sam Cane has faced the nearimpossible
task of following the
greatest player ever, Richie Mc-
Caw, first as the All Blacks openside
flanker and later as captain.
That job only got harder after he
became the first man to be redcarded
in a World Cup final on
Sunday. Still, the current skipper
tackles like no other. Cane’s defensive
crunch and his strength
at the collision point are second
to none, coupled with his ability
as a clean-out operator that puts
fear into the opposition.
Those who criticise Cane may
have forgotten how devastating
he was against Ireland in the
quarter-finals.
Reserve: Dalton Papali’i.
Honourable mentions: Du’Plessis
Kirifi, Billy Harmon, Tom Christie.
Blindside flanker: Ethan
Blackadder
Brought into the World Cup
squad as an injury replacement
for Emoni Narawa, Ethan Blackadder
will be the frontrunner
to become Shannon Frizell’s
replacement at blindside flanker.
Frizell, who heads to Japan, had
a physically epic 2023 season,
something Blackadder could
match. The Crusaders loosie goes
from 0 to 100 as soon as the kickoff
drops and plays the game all
gas, no brakes. That style of play
does come with its drawbacks, as
Blackadder is prone to conceding
the odd penalty or three, but it’s
a fair price to pay for the good he
brings to a team.
Honourable mentions: Luke
Jacobson, Samipeni Finau.
Locks: Scott Barrett, Tupou
Vaa’i
Discipline has, at times, been
an area of weakness for Scott
Barrett, though he generally
makes up for that through the
rest of his play. Equally as
comfortable at lock or blindside
flanker, Barrett brings physicality
every time he steps onto the
pitch. He’s added to his rugby
resume with captaincy at Super
level, which has only lifted his
overall game.
Tupou Vaa’i is the latest in a
string of formidable locks for
the All Blacks. Vaa’i has filled in
superbly when his number has
been called.
Reserve: Josh Lord. Honourable
mentions: Pari Pari Parkinson,
Quinten Strange.
Props: Tyrel Lomax, Ethan de
Groot
Tyrel Lomax and Ethan de
Groot are the latest in a long
line of impressive New Zealand
props.
Raised in the deep south,
loosehead de Groot is massive
at 1.90m and 122kg and puts his
size to good use at scrum time
and in attack.
Lomax, son of former Kiwis
international John, grew up
playing league in Wellington but
switched to rugby when his family
returned to Canberra. A good
scrummager, and active in open
play where he is always looking
for the tackle and trying to get
stuck into the ruck, he is a strong
talent.
Reserves: Tamaiti Williams,
Fletcher Newell. Honourable
mentions: Joe Moody, Ofa
Tu’ungafasi, Aidan Ross.
Hooker: Codie Taylor
Codie Taylor is equipped with
a strong and swift running game,
deft passing ability, a high IQ for
the game, strong defence and a
terrific engine. He will be one of
Robertson’s leaders.
A powerful scrummager and
surprisingly quick runner, Taylor
has worked his way back into
favour with the All Blacks selectors
after a rocky series against
Ireland in 2022 that saw him
dropped, and had a strong World
Cup.
Reserves: Samisoni Taukei’aho.
Honourable mentions: Asafo
Aumua, George Bell.
Full list of possible reserves:
May ‘speechless’ after big win
SEBASTIAN MAY stormed
home to win the biggest
title of his young career –
the New Zealand Amateur
Championship.
The 17-year-old Clearwater
player beat Auckland’s Steven
Van Heerden 6&5 in the 36-hole
final at Hamilton Golf Club – St
Andrews Course, to write his
name next to Danny Lee, Stuart
Jones, Walter Godfrey, and Brian
Silk, who all won at the venue.
After making golf his primary
focus earlier this year, May
struggled to comprehend he had
won the amateur championship
and has written his name alongside
some New Zealand golfing
legends.
“I’m pretty speechless. It’s
pretty unreal – I don’t think it’s
sunk in just yet,” he said after his
victory.
The St Andrew’s College
student beat Glenn Solomann,
Dominic Brettkelly, Harry
Goakes and Tom Lee to get to
the final. The final started off as
a close affair with both players
trading 1up leads, which was the
margin May would hold at the
midway point.
Sir Bob, 87, has been an avid
Golfing with the Stars
tournament is one of the most
popular events on the golfing
calendar.
Said event organiser and
BrainTree board member
Brendan Prendergast: “The
response is phenomenal. We
have a waiting list of both stars
and players wanting to be part of
the tournament where all funds
raised go to BrainTree, the first
wellness centre of its kind in the
country to support people with
neurological conditions.
“Every one of the stars playing
or volunteering at the event, as
well as those competing in the
four person teams, supports
the BrainTree cause. Such is the
demand for spots that we have
accommodation for the final
day, as they thought they would
already be at home.
“The goal was to make the top
32 for the match play when I
decided to play. I have a couple
of exams lined up next week. I
wasn’t actually sure if I was going
to play this week – I’m glad I
did,” he said.
His mother Paula followed
him every day while his older
brother and sister Zach and
Maddie watched from afar, as
increased the size of the field
from 25 teams to 32.”
Prendergast said each team
will be allocated a player from 32
current and past legends of their
admitted the victory still might
not give him the ‘best golfer in
positive step in his development.
“I’m not sure they would be
happy with me claiming that
title,” he said.
“It’s certainly a step in the
right direction. I’ll have a bit
of a break over the summer
and will try and play as many
tournaments as I can next year.”
“We are aiming to raise more
than $150,000 from the event
In his first start since
turning professional,
Kobori finished with a
superb final round of 66
on the Nudgee course
which included an eagle
on the fourth, a par 5.
His 17 birdies and
an eagle over the four
DIABETES AWARENESS
Diabetes Christchurch - Supporting
The Diabetes Christchurch Society’s theme for World Diabetes Month, November
2023 is “Education to Protect Tomorrow” and “Access to Diabetes Care”.
Now 101 years after the discovery of insulin, millions of people with diabetes
around the world struggle to access the care they need. People with diabetes
require ongoing care, diabetes education and support to manage their
complicated condition and avoid complications.
Just over 26,000 people have diagnosed diabetes in Canterbury.
Diabetes Matters
This campaign is to promote the
importance of affordable and equitable
access for all people living with diabetes
and people at risk of getting type 2
or gestational diabetes to be able to
access essential diabetes medicines and
technologies, self-management education
and information they require to achieve
optimal diabetes outcomes and to
strengthen their capacity to prevent type 2
diabetes.
Fundamental Components of
Diabetes Care include:
• Access to Diabetes Medicines: Many
people with diabetes need access to a
range of suitable medicines to manage
their condition well. These still remain
unavailable or unaffordable in many
countries.
• Access to Self-Monitoring: Blood
glucose monitoring is a fundamental
component of diabetes care. Many
people with diabetes do not have access
to the equipment and supplies they need
including Blood Glucose Testing Monitors,
Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) and
Insulin Pumps at an affordable cost.
• Access to Education and Psychological
support: People living with diabetes need
ongoing diabetes education and mental
support to manage their condition well.
• Access to Healthy Food and a Safe
Place to Exercise: People living with or
at risk of diabetes need access to healthy
food and a place to exercise. Both are
fundamental components of diabetes care
and prevention.
What is Diabetes
Diabetes is the result of the body not
creating enough insulin to keep blood
glucose (sugar) levels in the normal range
(between 4 and 8). Everyone needs some
glucose in their blood, but if it’s too high it
can damage your body over time.
The two most common types of diabetes
are type 1 and type 2.
Type 1 Diabetes is an ‘auto-immune’
condition where the body attacks the
insulin producing cells in the pancreas.
Insulin must therefore be delivered several
times daily by injection or insulin pump.
There is no known cause and no cure to
date.
In Type 2 Diabetes your body makes
insulin but it isn’t used efficiently. This
is also called insulin resistance. As the
condition progresses, a lack of insulin may
also develop. The most common cause
is excessive body weight and not enough
exercise. For many people (but not all) type
2 diabetes may be prevented by making
healthy food choices and staying active.
Diabetes that happens during pregnancy
is called Gestational Diabetes and while it
usually disappears following the pregnancy,
it may lead to Type 2 diabetes later in life.
Symptoms of Diabetes
may include:
• Thirst
• Passing more urine
• Weight loss
• Very tired
• Mood changes
Type 1 symptoms may
also have:
• Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting
• Skin infections, thrush
• Extreme hunger
• Poor concentration and performance
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diabetes is diagnosed by blood tests
which can be organised through your
doctor. If you are very unwell you should
seek medical assistance immediately. If
you have type 1 diabetes, you will need
to manage your blood glucose levels
with insulin. Healthy eating and physical
activity will also help you stay well.
With type 2 you may start with some
modifications to your diet and increase
exercise levels, treatment may also include
some oral medications, and some people
may also be placed on insulin as well.
Does It Run in Families?
If you have a blood relative with diabetes
you are more likely to develop type 1
diabetes. However Type 1 diabetes often
occurs in people who have no one in their
family with the condition.
Is there any cure for type 1 diabetes?
Currently there is no cure for type 1
diabetes. There is a lot of research going
on in the field of finding a cure for Type 1
diabetes.
Founded in 1956 Diabetes
Education to Protect Tomorrow
Our government needs to substantially
increase investment in diabetes care and
prevention. The rising number of people
affected by diabetes is putting added strain
on our healthcare systems. Healthcare
professionals must know how to detect
and diagnose the condition early and
provide the best possible care; while
people living with diabetes need access
to ongoing education to understand their
condition and carry out the daily self-care
essential to staying healthy and avoiding
complications.
Education to Protect Tomorrow
is the theme of the third year of the
International Diabetes Federation World
Diabetes 2021-23 campaign. Activities
will focus on highlighting the need for
better access to quality and relevant
diabetes education from diabetes health
professionals, diabetes societies’ and likeminded
health organisations for all people
living with diabetes.
Fundraising for most charities is
ongoing and hard work. We are extremely
grateful to our dedicated members
that have joined and given support and
donations over many years. Including
our advertisers in this feature and the
wonderful Foundations and Trusts that
continue to provide funding to our local
diabetes society. Thank you all.
‘It gave me a sense of hope’
Care package
boosts mums
with sick
babies
Thursday, November 9, 2023
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
the gift that gave her hope.
Soon after her newborn son
Callum was admitted to the
neonatal intensive car unit in
June last year, Naude received a
care package from charity One
Mother to Another.
“I was pregnant with my first
baby and everything was fine
as far as I knew, then all of a
“There was a lot of grieving
. a lot of unknowns and a lot
of worry . riding those ups
and downs was really difficult.
“I honestly felt like we were
never going to leave the neonatal
unit and I get emotional just
Naude said the One
Mother to Another care
package was the ‘sense
of hope’ she needed 18
months ago when her son
Callum was in intensive
care.
it was really hard to remain
hopeful.”
A few days after Callum was
born prematurely, Naude was
gifted the package.
Said Naude: “It was just so
impactful . When you’re in
this sterile hospital environment
where everything is new
and unfamiliar and foreign to
you, it was a touch of warmth
and compassion.
“The pack really gave me
a sense of hope . it just reminded
me that actually, you
can do this – you’re strong and
capable,” she said.
Naude is now on the One
Mother to Another volunteer
team, which has started a
crowdfunding Givealittle
campaign in support of other
mothers and carers who are in
period.
The campaign
will run until
November 17,
with the aim of
raising $7500 to
fund 300 care
packages.
“Just knowing
there are other
Joy Reid
backing you and rooting for
you and cheering for you is so
special,” said Naude.
Said the charity’s co-founder
and chief executive, Joy Reid:
“While we all wish for health
and happiness for our loved
ones at Christmas, unfortunately
for some, who will be
“We wan them to know they
are not alone.”
One Mother to Another
also started providing ‘Dad’s
care packages in September to
“recognise the father figures”,
Reid said.
