A RESIDENT has called teens who 

accidentally started a hedge fire with 

fireworks “brainless”. 

Fleming Drive, Leeston, residents had 

to grab garden hoses to stop the fire 

spreading from a hedge at Leeston Park 

about 10pm on Sunday. 

The fire started after three youths 

were seen letting off fireworks near the 

hedge. 

Letting off fireworks is banned in 

council reserves, unless permission has 

been granted by the council. 

Neighbour Judy Miller watched the 

trio arrive and saw them light fireworks. 

“One rocket shot straight towards our 

house, the other into the hedge,” Miller 

said. 

The hedge soon ignited. 

“Embers were flying everywhere 

causing damage to outdoor furniture, 

decks, fences, pool covers and more. 

“A bunch of neighbourhood men 

came running, helping to hose homes 

and properties down.”

night after fireworks the 

youngsters were setting off 

blew into a hedge near their 

properties. 

It didn’t take long before 

the hedge went up in flames. 

Luckily volunteer firefighters 

were on the scene fairly 

quickly. 

You can’t blame the 

youngsters, they were having 

fun; it is the fireworks which 

are the issue. 

Fireworks and the noise 

they make are part of our 

News 

makeup, and there is no 

changing that. As was the 

challenge of letting off a 

tom thumb in your hand, 

or if you were even braver a 

banger.

A LARGE agriculture business is 

planning to expand its operation, 

leaving nearby residents 

concerned. 

Drummond and Etheridge, 

which currently operates a sales 

yard and service centre for 

agricultural machinery including 

tractors on Jones Rd, has plans 

to expand in a rural area on the 

outskirts of Rolleston. 

The business is planning 

to develop a 4ha plot of land 

on Larcombs Rd next to the 

motorway owned by Drummond 

and Etheridge managing director 

Mark Etheridge. 

A nearby resident told Selwyn 

Times: “The main concern is 

heavy, big transport trucks 

coming down the road.” 

The resident, who declined 

to be named, said if the 

development goes ahead it would 

be an “eyesore” to an otherwise 

rural area. 

He said about 25 residents 

from the area had met to 

discuss the proposal and were 

planning to put a petition 

together against it. 

Selwyn Times understands the 

site would include storage for 

incoming machinery as well as 

space for up to 25 staff, with a 

3500sq m building which would 

include a board room, among 

other facilities. 

Drummond and Etheridge 

would not discuss details of the 

plan with Selwyn Times. 

But Rolleston branch manager 

Murray Chesterman said there 

were no plans to move the 

dealership to the site from Jones 

Rd. 

“The development in question 

is a parts distribution warehouse 

for the Drummond and 

Etheridge group,” he said.

Harris said the council has not 

received any form of consent 

application from Drummond 

and Etheridge. 

“A consent for a business in 

this location would need to 

address issues around both the 

District Plan restrictions on 

commercial activity in rural 

zones and the National Policy 

Statement on highly productive 

land. 

“However, we have not 

received any inquiries 

about an application of this type 

and it is difficult to make any 

clear assessment without an 

application that actually lays 

out what is being sought,” 

Harris said. 

Chesterman would not say if 

the company had a timeline for 

any applications to council.

Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade 

has marked 60 years serving the 

community. The milestone was 

marked with a birthday cake 

cut by brigade member Stephen 

(Pasty) Paston who has served 

for 47 of those 60 years. The 

formation of the Lincoln Fire 

Brigade dates officially from a 

meeting held on November 6, 

1963 which was attended by 15 

residents. The establishment 

of the brigade was finalised on

Proposed speed plan 

gets 1015 submissions 


JUST OVER 1000 people have 

submitted on the proposed 

district-wide speed limit 

changes. 

Submission on the council’s 

draft Speed Management 

Plan closed on Friday, with 

the council receiving 1015 

submissions. 

The plan would see town 

centres in Lincoln, Leeston 

and Southbridge dropped to 

30km/h, and some rural roads 

dropped to 80km/h or 60km/h. 

The speed limits have been 

guided by new Waka Kotahi 

NZTA rules, which direct all 

councils to prepare a long-term 

speed management plan. 

The focus of the plan is 

around safe and appropriate 

speeds, looking at keeping 

people safe and increasing 

their chances of surviving and 

avoiding serious injury when 

crashes occur. 

“We’ve been really pleased to 

see the large number of people 

who have made submissions on 

the Speed Management Plan,” a 

council spokesperson said. 

The sbumissions will now be

collated and presented to councillors 

as part of the final draft 

plan on December 6, after which 

it will be sent to Waka Kotahi

Council and Waimakiriri District 

Council have also released 

speed management plans. 

The council has pushed on 

despite the fact the National 

Party had promised to repeal 

the changes if elected and will 

look to raise some speed limits. 

The council said it is following 

the legal requirements set out by 

the Waka Kotahi. 


TWO CYCLEWAYS will be 

put on hold due to a funding 

freeze.

the $305 million Transport 

Choices Programme on hold. 

That has led to the West Melton 

to Rolleston Cycleway and the 

Rolleston Schools Connected 

Shared Path being put on hold.

The West Melton to Rolleston 

Cycleway has a project budget 

of $2 million, and the Rolleston 

Schools Connected Shared Path a

The Rolleston schools shared 

path plans to link the two 

campuses of Rolleston College, 

with the route passing a number 

of primary schools along the way 

and linking Foster Park. 

The Transport Choices funding 

is expected to cover 51 per cent 

of the project costs for both these 

projects. 

Said Waka Kotahi: “We have 

informed affected council 

partners and we will provide 

further updates as we receive 

direction from the incoming 

Government.”

When fire crews from Leeston 

and Southbridge arrived neighbours 

said the hedge had flames 

twice its height coming from it. 

Leeston Volunteer Fire Brigade 

chief fire officer Matt Walker said 

it was lucky none of the houses 

were damaged. 

Walker said the hot windy 

weather made the fire difficult to 

fight, with crews spending two 

hours putting it out. 

The fire comes as fire chiefs express 

concern about the increased 

risk this summer with El Nino 

weather patterns bringing hot 

and windy conditions. In 

preparation, crews are doing extra 

training focusing on vegetation 

fires. 

Miller said she had seen the 

youngsters post on the Leeston 


Southbridge Ellesmere Community 

Facebook page on Sunday, 

warning they might let off some 

fireworks. 

“Our family might do some 

fireworks tonight (wind dependent). 

It will be when it’s darker 

(9-9.30) Leeston area,” the anonymous 

post said. 

Miller said the post initially 

said fireworks would be let off behind 

the tennis courts in the park. 

The person has since deleted the 

comments giving the location. 

“The reality was not a family 

outing; no adult present, just a 

group of brainless teenagers who 

thought that setting their fireworks 

off just a few metres from 

my house, right beside a hedge 

and close behind homes, was a 

smart choice.” 

Miller said the youths hung 

around for a bit, and then left 

without coming forward. 

Walker called on people to be 

extra cautious when letting off 

fireworks.

Big money raised for Cox’s treatment

THE KATIE Cox Appeal is 

now expected to be at about 

$300,000 after a massive last few 

days, including a Melbourne 

Cup fund-raising luncheon at 

Addington on Tuesday last week. 

The 33-year-old Leeston harness 

racing trainer and driver 

is battling a rare form of lung 

cancer, with a trust fund set up 

to help pay for expensive medication. 

She recently started her 

first round of treatment. 

Trust founder Craig Wiggins 

told the 200 people at the 

luncheon the total was already 

at $195,000, after a number of 

sizeable donations, including 

$25,000 from Entain, $10,000 

from TAB NZ and $5000 from 

Harness Racing New Zealand. 

On top of that the luncheon 

then raised close to $100,000. 

Money was raised from the 

luncheon itself ($1200 for a table 

of 10) as well as an auction featuring 

about 50 items that had 

been generously donated. 

Cox was at the luncheon 

which was also attended by 

a who’s who of Canterbury 

harness racing, including high 

profile trainers, breeders, owners 

and drivers. 

It had been organised at short 

notice by racing presenter Greg 

O’Connor who MC’d the afternoon 

and was involved in some 

spirited banter with auctioneerfor-the-day 

(and former junior 

driver) Stevie Golding. 

The highest bid was $8500 

forked out for a trans-Tasman 

horse flight with IRT, while a 

service fee to multiple Group 1 

winner King Of Swing sold for 

$6000. 

A trip for two to the world’s 

richest harness race, the Eureka 

in Sydney, fetched $4300, while 

a 10 per cent lifetime share in

and will race again as early as

Scottish celebration 

A BONNIE day was had by thousands 

of people who attended the 12th annual 

Hororata Highland Games on Saturday. 

Colin Forsyth travelled back from his 

home in Scotland to take the role of chieftain 

at the games. A founding committee 

member of the event, it had been nine 

years since he had been able to attend the 

games. 

“I was simply blown away as I wandered 

around the festival, it is just phenomenal. 

The committee has stayed true to our initial 

vision but expanded it into something 

that was beyond my wildest dreams,” 

Forsyth said. 

The games hosted nearly 1000 competitors 

of all ages competing in traditional 

Scottish events, with a record number of 

highland dancers, pipers and drummers. 

Australian athlete Terry Sparkes won 

the Oceanian heavyweight championship 

for a third year. Also from Australia, Fran 

Fitzpatrick won the women’s heavy championship. 

The champion pipe band was awarded 

to the Grade 2 Celtic Pipe Band from Nelson. 

The champion highland dancer was 

Sarah McCarthy and the BBC Eagles from 

Windwhistle won the tug o’ war. 

Also on offer was the caber tossing, pie 

eating and running the Kilted Mile. 

Legal Matters 

Simple term, 

significant consequences 

The majority of real estate in New 

Zealand is bought and sold using The 

Law Association (used to be ADLS) 

Agreement for Sale and Purchase 

which states in the fine print that 

“unless particulars of tenancy 

are included in this agreement, 

the property is sold with vacant 

possession and the vendor shall so 

yield the property on the settlement 

date”. Whilst “Vacant Possession” may 

seem like a simple term, the significant 

consequences were demonstrated in 

a recent Court decision which found 

the Vendor was obligated to provide 

vacant possession to the Purchaser. 

The case concerned a property 

in Auckland, with a house on the 

land, which was advertised for its 

development potential, noting that 

resource consents had been issued 

for the development of seven units. 

The property was sold to a developer 

by Agreement dated 4 August 2020 

(and confirmed 3 days later, and 

the Purchaser paid the deposit of 

$155,000). The Agreement did not 

mention any tenancy. That meant the 

Vendor was contractually required 

to provide “Vacant Possession” on 

the settlement date. The Purchaser 

intended to remove the existing 

dwelling and to carry out a multi-unit 

development. 

The Vendor’s lawyer advised the 

Purchaser’s lawyer that the property 

was in fact subject to a fixed-term 

tenancy terminating on 6 July 2021. 

They alleged that the agent had told 

the Purchaser and that the Purchaser 

was bound to take the property 

subject to the tenancy. The Vendor 

refused to complete the sale on any 

other basis. The Purchaser refused 

to purchase the property with the 

tenancy in place and would not 

settle until confirmation of vacant 

possession was received. The tenants 

were agreeable to vacating the 

property earlier provided they were 

paid compensation of $18,000 which 

neither the Vendor nor Purchaser 

were prepared to pay. 

When the Purchaser refused to settle 

on the settlement date, the Vendor’s 

Solicitor issued a settlement notice in 

an attempt to cancel the contract. 

The Purchaser sued for specific 

performance (ie settlement with 

vacant possession) and damages, and 

won. The Vendor appealed to the 

Court of Appeal and lost again. 

The Court found that the Vendor 

was obligated to provide Vacant 

Possession, the settlement notice 

issued by the Vendor was invalid and it 

was not entitled to cancel the contract. 

The Court also held that the Purchaser 

was not obligated to settle its purchase 

of the property with the fixed term 

tenancy in place and to then claim 

compensation later.

Exploring biodiversity 

at Ahuriri Lagoon 

As part of the two-week series of activities following the SWELL Expo, Council’s 

biodiversity team hosted members of the community on an exploration of the 

ecological features and biodiversity of the Ahuriri Lagoon Walk. 

Ahuriri Lagoon located on the Huritini/Halswell River between Tai Tapu and 

Motukarara has been undergoing a significant restoration since 2018 with the 

establishment of a constructed wetland after the area was drained in the 

late 1800s. 

Being able to share the restoration project's work with the community was 

rewarding for Senior Biodiversity Specialist Denise Ford. 

“In the past this area served as an important mahinga kai site for local rūnanga 

and food source for native wildlife. Now we are seeing the return of many of 

our indigenous species including birds, reptiles, fish and insects, all playing an 

important role in the ecosystem”. 

Alongside the Council team was Te Ara Kākāriki Greenway Canterbury Trust 

who have planted thousands of native seedlings around the lagoon with five local 

schools through their Kids Discovery Plantout initiative. A large legacy site of 

20,000 indigenous plants, Te Pae O Ahuriri, was also planted as part of a Jobs for 

Nature project and forms part of their Greendot programme. 

Te Ara Kākāriki Coordinator Letitia Lum explained the importance of Greendots 

to the Selwyn region. “Greendots act as a natural habitat stepping stone or 

biodiversity corridor, from the mountains to Te Waihora and the sea. These sites 

can extend the habitat of native birds, so they can re-establish a foothold on the 

plains. We hope the sites at Ahuriri Lagoon will help our native species thrive 

across the Selwyn region”. 

The Ahuriri Lagoon restoration has played a significant role in attracting Selwyn’s 

native biodiversity, making it a valuable ecological asset for the whole community 

to enjoy. 

Making turning safer at the SH1, Dunns 

Crossing and Walkers Road intersection 

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is proposing to install an Intersection Speed Zone 

to slow traffic to 60km/h on SH1 when vehicles approach it from the Dunns Crossing 

and Walkers Road. 

An Intersection Speed Zone means when a driver is approaching the highway from 

Dunns Crossing or Walkers Road an electronic sign is activated to reduce the legal 

highway speed to 60km/h, similar to the Burnham Road/SH1 intersection. 

The speed on SH1 was lowered to 70km at the intersection by a Temporary Speed 

Limit as part of the now completed Southern Motorway project. To install an 

Intersection Speed Zone, Waka Kotahi is now required to formally consult with the 

community to capture and consider everyone’s feedback. 

Reducing the speeds people travel at through the intersection means that crashes 

are less likely to happen, because people will have more time to react to mistakes 

and avoid collisions causing death or serious injury. If a crash does occur, the people 

involved have a better chance of walking away if vehicle speeds are lower. 

What else is happening in the area 

We’re working towards a wider package of safety improvements in this area as part 

of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme SH1 Rolleston Transport Improvements 

Project, which includes a roundabout and pedestrian and cycle underpass —

Overcoming barriers to help create 

safer roads 

Learning to drive is often key to creating independence and making life easier, 

especially for those living rurally with limited access to public transport. 

For some Selwyn residents, there are obstacles, such as lesson costs 

and access to a vehicle, that get in the way of obtaining a restricted and 

full licence. 

Run by Proactive Drive Charitable Trust, the Community Driver Mentor 

Programme (CDMP) removes these barriers for Selwyn residents by 

matching them with a mentor to teach safe driving skills, helping them 

pass their licences. 

The Council provides funding for this programme, which recently won a gold 

award in community volunteering at the Selwyn Awards 2023. 

Last Monday, 10 drivers graduated from the programme in a ceremony held 

at Te Ara Ātea. 

Graduates, family members and Selwyn’s CDMP Coordinator Faye Lammers 

helped to share the stories of the graduates and how the programme helped 

them overcome barriers. 

Graduate Lucy Bain, daughter of a single mum and one of six children, says 

the programme was great because she didn’t have to rely on her mum to 

teach her and it reduced the financial strain. 

When Lucy found out she passed her restricted it felt like a whole weight 

had been lifted off her and her family’s shoulders. 

“There’s so much freedom for me now I’ve got my restricted, it’s so much 

easier for everyone.” 

Also attending the graduation were the mentors who play a critical role in 

ensuring drivers who go through the programme are well equipped to drive 

safely on our roads. 

Retired heavy transport driver, Geoff Carpenter says it’s great to see 

students getting their licences and gaining confidence in their own ability 

to drive safely. 

“I enjoy it. Because I am retired, it’s easy for me to fit students in for teaching 

and I like putting my spare time into something that benefits the community.” 

To close the graduation, Proactive Drive’s General Manager Tim Hartnell 

talked about how rewarding it is to be involved with a programme that 

improves the Selwyn community which we all live and work in. He told 

the mentors and graduates to be proud of their contribution in making the 

community safer.

Lily of 

the valley 

perfect in 

borders 

AT THIS time of the year lily of 

the valley is at its best with its 

lush green foliage and beautiful 

waxy, white, bell-shaped flowers 

that give off the most wonderful 

scent. 

Lily of the valley, Convallaria 

majalis, is not fussy about soil 

type but seems to do better in 

semi-shade. Ideally suited for 

wild and woodland gardens, 

it makes a good ground cover 

planting in smaller shrub borders 

and complements other plantings 

such as ferns, oxalis, asarum, 

astilbe, primula, and cyclamen. 

Like many herbaceous perennials, 

over autumn and winter the 

leaves die off and the plant goes 

dormant but come spring purple 

spikes appear out of the ground 

that unfold with leaves and a 

flower stalk with several little 

bell-shaped hanging flowers. 

Sometimes the flowers are 

followed by small scarlet berries. 

There is only one species but 

numerous cultivars such as those 

with variegated leaves, pink 

flowers and double flowers. –ODT 

Vegetables 

As the days get longer and soil 

temperatures rise, established 

plants and seedlings grow faster, 

while seed sown now is almost 

certain to germinate. 

French and butter beans can be 

sown in the open. Place the seeds 

singly, about 15cm apart and 

5cm deep. 

Sow runner beans in a sunny 

spot. 

Smaller cucumber varieties 

(Lemon, True Lemon) can be 

sown in rich soil but in cooler 

areas, these and other cucurbits, 

including zucchini (courgettes), 

are better grown from plants 

bought from a garden centre. 

Main-crop beetroot can be 

sown, to mature in autumn and 

stand over winter. Cylindra is a 

good keeper and its shape makes 

it useful for bottling, while Derwent 

Globe is a proven round 

variety. Sow beetroot seed about 

1cm deep. A beetroot seed is 

actually a cluster of three or four 

seeds, so when the seedlings appear, 

thin to 15cm apart. 

Asparagus can be harvested 

now and spears can be taken 

over the next month. If this is the 

first season for your asparagus, 

resist taking any shoots so the 

root system can develop. This 

self-discipline will pay dividends 

in years to come with more and 

fatter stems. When taking spears,

fertiliser at the rate of 100g per 

sqm, before harvesting starts, 

then liquid manure regularly for 

the rest of the growing season. 

Established asparagus beds 

can produce for 15 to 20 years, 

making the initial outlay well 

worthwhile. 

Sweetcorn can still be sown. 

Choose a faster-maturing variety, 

such as Florida Supersweet, and 

sow in groups of six to eight 

plants, 15cm apart in each direction, 

to help fertilisation. The 

plants need shelter from cold 

winds and plenty of compost and 

lime. Corn also needs potash. 

Apply 45g a sqm before planting. 

Celery plants can be transferred 

to the garden now. Space 

Flowers 

This is also a busy month in 

the flower garden. 

Half-hardy plants such as 

marigolds, zinnias, salpiglossis 

and bedding dahlias tolerate 

some chill but are likely to be 

killed by late frosts. 

For better flowers, add wellrotted 

compost and a light dressing 

of bone dust to the ground 

worked into the top 20cm where 

they are to grow. 

Love-in-a-mist (nigella,) 

candytuft, larkspur, calliopsis, 

sweet sultan, clarkia and Shirley 

poppies should be sown where 

they are to flower. 

Phlox is a sweet-scented perennial 

that comes in shades of 

pink, lavender and white. Plants 

should now be a mass of shoots. 

A little blood and bone worked 

in around the plants will ensure a 

good display in late summer. 

Tulips and narcissi should be 

left as long as possible before 

lifting, cleaning, then replanting 

or storing. Do not remove foliage 

until it has turned yellow. 

Dahlias may still be planted 

and old clumps of tubers lifted 

and broken up for replanting. 

Stake when planting. 

Blue flowers give a cool effect 

in the garden on hot summer 

days. As well as perennial 

delphiniums and Campanula 

persicifolia, try annuals such 

as larkspur, cornflower, nigella, 

California bluebell (Phacelia 

campanularia), nemophila and 

kingfisher daisies (Felicia). 

Greenfly are a common problem 

on roses and, under the right 

conditions, can spread rapidly. 

They can be sprayed with soap 

solution, which will not harm 

bees, or a commercial product. 

Fruit 

Hardier tomatoes can be 

planted outdoors this month, but 

the plants will need shelter from 

strong westerly and southerly 

winds. Set stakes before planting 

so the roots will not be damaged. 

Tomatoes need rich, welldrained 

soil (add a sprinkling of 

potash) and if the ground is very 

acid (pH less than 5.5) a handful 

of lime to every square metre. 

Liquid manure once the first 

fruits set helps ensure a good.

Horses on farms 

– safety for all

Whether you’re riding horses for farm 

work or for recreation in a rural setting, it’s 

always important to keep safety practices 

top of mind. Even if you personally are 

fully experienced and comfortable around 

horses, you may be bringing in new 

farmworkers, have inexperienced visitors 

on site, or be introducing children to the 

horse-riding experience. 

Injuries will happen and some can be 

life-changing, such as serious head and 

spinal injuries. These can happen if: 

• you are thrown or fall from the horse 

• the horse crushes you 

• the horse kicks you. 

You can’t eliminate all the hazards, 

but you can reduce the chance of injury 

or being less severely hurt if there’s an 

accident. 

People need a combination of common 

sense and caution when dealing with 

horses. To handle them safely, you must 

take their instincts and senses into 

consideration. While much of this only 

comes with experience, there is useful 

guidance put out by WorkSafe NZ – go 

to their website and search for the Horses 

section. 

Its key messages are: 

• Only trained and experienced people 

should ride horses for farm work 

• Match riders to horses within their 

handling abilities 

• Always wear a helmet when riding a 

horse 

• Always supervise children on/and 

around horses 

Online factsheets address some 

particular danger times such as breaking 

in horses, or transporting them. There is 

also the longer resource “Riding horses on 

farms – good practice guidelines”. 

While this publication is not new, it 

remains a detailed and practical guide, 

useful either as a refresher for yourself 

or as a training resource for people new 

to your environment. It covers horse 

behaviour, hazard scenarios and controls, 

equipment, training requirements, and 

further references. 

WorkSafe defines good practice in this 

area as: “Always work with calm, deliberate 

movements around horses. When handling 

your horse, use physical contact and your 

voice, so it always knows where you are. 

Always understand the significance of 

the horse’s movements and its position 

in relation to you and its surroundings. 

Use Personal Protective Equipment and 

ensure that it is well maintained and fit-forpurpose.” 

The connection between horses and 

humans is longstanding, special, and 

mutually beneficial. It relies on our 

understanding of their behaviour to 

uphold it safely.

After a year on their Selwyn lifestyle block, 

David and Jess are still appreciating the huge 

changes, as well as laughing off the occasional 

shocks. Here’s their advice. 

The shopping revolution 

When we first considered moving rural, our 

criteria on what felt too remote was, “how far to 

the dairy?” Bless our suburban minds! 

Then we embraced our situation by buying a 

ginormous fridge and freezer, and now proudly 

string out gaps between shopping for as long as 

possible. This saves money compared with “just 

popping to the supermarket”, and also results in 

less household rubbish and less petrol. Win win. 

When your local P dealer is Watties 

Before you rent or buy your slice of heaven, 

research the activities around you. If living 

amongst “real” farming, just be aware that you 

get no say in what happens when. Crops can be 

harvested, animals can be moved, grain can be 

dried in silos, at any time of night or day. 

Massive machinery may trundle past, flooding 

your environment with dust/water/nutrient spray/ 

weed killer/chaff/light/sound – tough luck if you’ve 

just hung the washing or have lured your urban 

friends to a BBQ in your country idyll. 

Bird scarers are the worst, letting off regular 

gunshot sounds from sunrise to sunset. 

You’re living in someone else’s workplace, and it’s 

you who has to adjust. 

Amazements we never expected 

• “Our” land is actually owned by a fairytale 

collection of wildlife. Sharing with hares, 

pheasants, quails, little owls, nesting herons who 

return to the same tree every year… random 

moments become magical. 

• Every weather is beautiful. Thunder and 

lightning storms are massive. Wind in the trees 

sounds like rain. You can see all of rainbows. On 

the Canterbury Plains, fog blankets the whole 

world. 

• Watching our pets blossom and change. From 

stuck in their mid-life ways in an over-densified 

suburb, they switched from horror to caution to 

lords of the jungle within weeks. 

• The local junk mail. For newbies, the range 

of farming accessories is extraordinary. Let’s just 

say… rams’ crayons. They come with a harness, 

and they’re not from Whitcoulls… 

All in all 

Choose your spot well, then throw yourself into 

the experience. When we venture into a city now, it 

looks so grim. You’ll never go back.

Courtenay A & P show celebrates 

Escape into the countryside and visit 

The Courtenay A&P Show at the Kirwee 

Showgrounds on Saturday, the 25th of 

November, 2023, for a genuine country 

day out that’s enjoyable and great value 

for all. Now celebrating its 148th year, 

this event has become a cherished 

tradition, drawing people from all walks 

of life to celebrate the region’s rich 

farming heritage, success in Agriculture, 

Art, Entertainment, and Business, and 

demonstrating the unity of the rural 

community. 

Fundamental to the Courtenay A&P 

Show is a connection between humans, 

animals and the land. The event pays 

tribute to the region’s agricultural 

roots and highlights the importance of 

preserving this unique heritage. This 

year’s theme, Technology in Agriculture, 

aims to help farmers improve 

equipment and knowledge to make 

things easier on the farm. President Mr 

Warwick Seaton confirms, “This is our 

148th show, and technology has come a 

long way since the first Courtenay Show 

and in 2025, we will celebrate our 150th 

show.” Around 3,000 people attend, 

including eager competitors, dedicated 

judges, tireless organisers, and the 

community. The show owes its success 

to a passionate committee of volunteers 

who work tirelessly. 

The Courtenay A&P Show caters 

to a wide range of interests, ensuring 

there’s something for everyone to enjoy 

and appreciate. The event showcases 

many classes, including equestrian and 

livestock competitions featuring sheep, 

pet lambs, cattle, goats, poultry, and 

grain and seed exhibitions celebrating 

the land’s harvest. 

Apart from the agricultural exhibits, 

visitors can visit trade sites, indulge 

in a variety of delectable food, and 

peruse craft stalls showcasing the talents 

of local artisans. The Produce Shed 

displays the art of cooking, knitting, 

sewing, quilting, photography, art

speed-shearing competitions provide a

Pipe Band and DJ Singh add a musical

Curiosity Day 

Are you curious to learn more about 

innovative and regenerative farming 

practices that can improve soil health, 

reduce impacts on the environment 

and freshwater and lower input costs? 

Selwyn Waihora Water Zone Committee 

and Quorum Sense are offering an 

opportunity for farmers, growers and 

other interested parties to attend a free 

one-day workshop and farm visit. 

The morning workshop to be held 

at Glentunnel Community Centre will 

cover a variety of topics and include 

presentations from Dr Charles Merfield 

from the Future Farming Trust discussing 

plant and soil health and Canaan Ahu 

from Soil Matters talking about nutrients, 

soil fertility and cost comparisons of 

alternative wintering systems. 

Following a complimentary lunch, 

attendees will head out to Scarlett 

Dairy Farm. Central Plains Water Ltd 

shareholders Tony & Jean Scarlett 

along with daughter Melissa and son 

in law Deane run a 200ha dairy farm 

at Hororata. Deane & Melissa, who 

manage the farm day to day, have started 

choosing to place a greater focus on the 

health and biology of the soil which in 

turn is providing improvements in plant 

and animal health, animal welfare as well 

as reducing their input costs. Deane & 

Melissa will discuss the practical methods 


they are implementing to achieve these 

beneficial results. 

In light of rising farm related costs, 

changes in regulatory obligations and 

increased pressures from consumers and 

industry partners, this workshop aims to 

raise awareness of different options that 

farmers and growers can explore to meet 

requirements while maintaining business 

profitability.

Due to growth, Rolleston College seeks two full-time administration superstars to join our 

fabulous team here at the College commencing Term 1, 2024. Your ability to work as part of 

a team with high integrity, confidentiality and honesty are essential. While experience in a 

secondary school setting and knowledge of KAMAR is preferable, it is not essential for the 

right candidate as training and support will be provided. 

Our Administrator/Receptionist roles are varied. However, your skills will be crucial in 

helping to prioritise and facilitate staff, learner, whānau and community requests. 

Each team member currently holds a portfolio of work to allow for growth. This will enable 

us to develop, embed and share portfolios amongst the team, allowing for individual 

ownership and school growth. 

Reporting to our Admin Supervisor, the roles are permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per 

week), term-time only positions. Your work hours will be 8.00 am to 4.00 pm, carried out 

each week of the school term, Monday to Friday. In addition to your core term-time hours, 

the role will require you to work ten additional days (approx two days, each term break) 

to help with back-to-school, end-of-the-year, post and preterm preparations. Non-term 

hours may require some flexibility but can be negotiated in advance, depending on school 

commitments.

MILITARY EXERCISE 

2/1 Battalion March and Shoot 

21-22 November 2023 

The general public is to be advised that a New 

Zealand Army Exercise will be conducted in 

the Selwyn District, along the roads between 

Burnham Camp to West Melton Rifle range and 

shooting at the Range, over the period 21-22 

November 2023. 

The exercise will involve up to 100 soldiers 

from 2nd 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand 

Infantry Regiment from Burnham Camp. 

Training will involve soldiers moving by foot 

from Burnham Camp to West Melton Rifle 

range, Tuesday 21 November from 4pm to 

7pm, wearing camouflage clothing, carrying 

large back packs and carrying weapons. 

In the evening to 10pm, soldiers will conduct 

a shoot on the range. 

The following morning Wednesday 22 

November, soldiers will recommence shooting 

and from 1pm-4pm move back to Burnham 

Camp by foot along the same route. 

The New Zealand Army takes fire risk seriously 

and will ensure fire mitigation is present.

Person - Site Operations 

We are looking for an enthusiastic multitasker who is experienced in the 

maintenance and upkeep of buildings and vehicles. 

The purpose of this role is to assist with general building, and fleet maintenance 

at our Lincoln site. You will work in the Site Operations team to enhance the 

operation and appearance of the site and carry out intensive and regular building 

and vehicle checks. You will help liaise with contractors and interact with your 

team colleagues on a day-to-day basis to ensure stakeholder needs are met. 

This position is permanent full-time (part-time can be negotiated), reporting to the 

Facility Manager, and is based at our Lincoln site. 

To succeed in this physical hands-on role, you should possess a current full 

driver’s licence and be able to work both unsupervised and as part of a team. 

You will have practical maintenance skills, including basic repair methods, be 

proactive, have sound vehicle knowledge, and be an organised person with good 

interpersonal skills and the ability to complete work in a prompt and safe manner. 

Previous experience working in a commercial environment, as well as a general 

understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 is highly desirable.

Sam’s café drop-ins 

It’s great to meet people and hear about the things that are important to you. Thats why every 

few months I hold public café drop-ins for every and anybody to talk about what’s on their mind. 

People chat about a mixed bag of issues, but most ask me to change something they are not 

happy with or to explain a certain policy or decision. If I can’t offer the answer there and then, 

I’ll always follow up after talking to our Council team. I’ve just finished another round of 

drop-ins and one of the most common feedback points was that you’d like to have these 

drop-in sessions outside working times. I’ve heard that, so the next round in the new year 

will be after 5.30. Thank you to all those who took time to stop in for a yarn.

Aging well in Selwyn 

Our June growth report says that the over 65 age group will be the 

fastest growing in Selwyn over the next 30 years. We recognise that, 

and the amazing contribution to our district that is made by our 

seniors who work, volunteer, mentor and offer support to the younger 

generations. Thank you. Last month we put together a dedicated 

series of events to increase the wellbeing of our senior community. 

The SWELL series kicked off with a life stye expo at the Lincoln events 

center attended by more than 1500 people who were able to visit stalls 

on everything from financial advice and healthcare to social activities 

and clubs. This was followed by a range of offerings over two weeks 

to keep mind, body, and spirit active including opportunities to walk 

and learn with our biodiversity team at the Ahuriri Lagoon or take 

part in Zumba or hydro sessions in at the Aquatic Centre. Providing 

outstanding opportunities for our senior community is not just a twoweek 

burst of activity. All year round our Council have opportunities 

to keep all ages fit and active or challenge the mind. From mature and 

motivated exercise classes across the district to a range of artistic or 

development sessions in our libraries. I want our district to be a place 

where we can go through every phase of life being connected and

Mana whenua 

partnership 

I’m delighted that our Council took a historic step 

forward last month by welcoming the first of two mana 

whenua representatives to our Council. Honouring our 

relationship agreement signed in November last year at 

Te Pā o Moki, Taumutu, Megen McKay will represent Te 

Taumutu Rūnanga at all our hui and will have speaking 

rights at council meetings and voting rights on all council 

committees. Over the past decade our partnership has 

shown it provides richer discussions, wider consideration 

and faster processes which deliver better outcomes for 

our district. Megan comes to us with extensive legal 

and governance experience. She is also an independent 

hearing commissioner, which is perfect experience to 

contribute perspective and depth to enable more informed 

decisions. Megen has a life-long connection to Waikirikiri 

Selwyn and is a proud resident. Her whānau have been 

heavily involved with the community for decades.

Making a splash in Darfield 

I’ve been for a sneak peek at Darfield pool which is nearing the end of its spruce up to 

keep it in great condition for the community. It looks awesome and is on track to be 

open this weekend. Behind the scenes is new plant and equipment which will improve 

heating and the swim experience. You will notice that the feel and safety of the pool and 

surrounding areas are much more welcoming and user friendly, with increased shade 

and seating. The changing rooms have had a makeover and there are new shaded family 

areas with picnic tables. Inside is a new toddlers wet deck and water play area. We’ve 

installed a brand-new pool liner to stop the leaks and I know there is a lot of excitement 

about the three-meter-high hydro slide and diving platform guaranteeing hours of fun 

for everybody.

Taking a smart 

approach to building 

Being organised, aids a smooth build whether engaging a 

building company or overseeing the project yourself. 

Start by finding a building site. Its 

orientation to sun and prevailing 

winds should determine your house 

design so the sun’s free energy is 

capitalised on and you have sunny 

sheltered spots for outdoor living. 

Choosing your design and 

building company may go hand in 

hand, where the latter’s consultant 

works with you to determine the 

best plan for your section, lifestyle 

and family needs. 

Alternatively, you might employ 

an architect or architectural draughtsman. 

While it may cost a little more for house 

plans drawn up for building consent and 

maybe lodged by your professional, it 

allows you freedom to work with a smaller 

builder or oversee your own project. 

Ensure all tradespeople are licensed 

building practitioners (a building consent 

requirement). 

Before building starts, determine all 

building materials and fixtures (some 

will be required to be stated for building 

consent). Many housing companies take 

their clients through these decisions before 

commencing building. Changes made once 

building is underway are likely to incur 

extra charges and even budget overruns, 

especially if tradespeople return to the job. 

If working with a smaller builder, you 

may have more time to choose the kitchen 

design, kitchen appliances and paint 

colours. Working through these decisions 

early on however ensures time to weigh-up 

options rather than a rushed choice. 

Try making a list of the fixtures and 

fittings to be decided on, such as the 

type and colour of the exterior cladding, 

roof, aluminium joinery, front door and 

garage door. List the bathroom and toilet 

products required then visit plumbing 

suppliers to get ideas for vanities, bath, 

showers, taps, bath spout and the like. If 

having a walk-in shower, consider whether 

you want a glass door and the number 

of shower heads. Write down the brands 

and product numbers you like and obtain 

prices to allow differentiation between the 

options. 

Meeting your plumber on site is also a 

good idea so placement of taps and the like 

can be discussed. 

Most electricians do a walk-through 

with clients to determine where power 

points, lights and electronic fittings will 

be positioned. Think about how each 

room will be used and furniture might be 

placed, remembering it is more affordable 

to include these while the house is under 

construction than retrofit later. Mark your 

ideas on a copy of the plan ahead of time. 

Collect paint charts and purchase test 

pots of colours you like then paint large 

pieces of cardboard to get an idea of their 

effect. Visit showhomes too, asking about 

their colour schemes. 

Planning ahead will help take stress out 

of the building process.
