‘Bloody good bugger’
A MAN OF mana, a legend and
a bloody good bugger.
Those are just a few of the
ways ranger Steve Leiataua
has been described by his colleagues,
so it’s no wonder he
was awarded one of the top
national awards in the sector.
Leiataua was presented the
Recreation Aotearoa Awards
Ian Galloway Memorial Cup
for outstanding contribution in
parks, amenity horticulture and
open spaces at Bottle Lake Forest,
surrounded by his team, a
few former colleagues and wife
Sue, as he wasn’t able to make it
to the ceremony.
“I am just over the moon,” the
St Albans resident said.
“It was a long road to get here,
there have been ups and downs.
But it’s been so good to work
for the community and work
with some great people. I really
love it.”
Leiataua has worked in parks
for more than 40 years. He
started in 1981 as a cadet in
Auckland – the first Samoan
ranger they’d had – before
moving to Christchurch.
He became a park ranger
at Waimairi County Council,
carrying on through the 1989
amalgamation into Christchurch
City Council.

and even the visitors centre at

“One of the highlights for me
over the years has to be watching
and working with staff as
they come and go. It’s about
people and watching them
grow, helping them along the
way,” he said.

Residents
want area’s
heritage
character
maintained

PEOPLE LIVING in a heritage
area of Linwood are worried its
character will be lost if changes
are made to social housing.
Ōtauhahi Community Housing
Trust is considering redeveloping
its complex in Elm Grove, which
sits within the Englefield Avonville
heritage area.
The proposed redevelopment
would replace the seven existing
units with 12 – four one-bedroom,
single-storey units facing the street
and a further eight units behind a
double-storey building. The existing
properties were built in the late
1950s to house pensioners.
Elm Grove resident for more
than 30 years Bronwyn Baiteary
lives opposite the complex.
She said with 14 dwellings
in Elm Grove plus the current
seven social housing units, the
neighbourhood “does not want
to be swamped with extra units”
and five extra dwellings would be
a “significant increase in a tiny
street”.
“We would like a development
on a human scale that continues
to support an environment where
people can feel involved and supported,”
she said.
She was one of 28 Elm Grove
residents who met with the
housing trust to discuss their
concerns.

Delay over for new
Bromley playground
Shirley intersections
to see improvements
PLANS TO make two busy
Shirley intersections safer have
been released.
The city council is seeking
feedback on the proposals
to improve the Shirley Rd,
Marshland Rd, New Brighton Rd
and North Parade intersection,
as well as the nearby Shirley
Rd, Hills Rd and Warrington St
intersection.
The intersections are adjacent
to Shirley Intermediate School,
The Palms Shopping Centre,
Shirley Primary School, Best
Start Warrington and the shops
and businesses in Shirley.
Plans for the four-way
intersection include safe speed
platforms on all approaches,
the removal of the left slip lane
from Shirley Rd into Marshland
Rd, a new traffic island on New
Brighton Rd and green turning
arrows for the North Pde and
Marshland Rd approaches.
The Shirley, Hills and
Warrington plans include a
safe speed platform covering
the intersection, raised
pedestrian crossings on the slip
lanes, and a new green turning
arrow from Hills Rd into
Warrington St.
City council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright said making sure
these intersections are safe is
important as their proximity to
schools, preschools and shops
means they are used by more
vulnerable road users.
“More than half of serious
crashes in Christchurch
happen at intersections, and
there have been 32 serious
crashes combined at these two
intersections in the last five
years,” he said.
“We’ve identified these
intersections as a priority for
improvements and have
planned a range of features
such as safe speed platforms to
encourage safer speeds through
these busy intersections to
improve safety for everyone
travelling through the area,
whether they are driving,
walking or cycling.
“If you’re a regular user, have
a look and let us know what
you think of our planned safety
improvements,” said Wright.

THE BROMLEY Old Reserve
will have a new playground in
about a fortnight.
It comes after people
complained to the city council
about the delay in building
the new structure after the old
playground equipment was
damaged by fire in March this
year (above).
Last week, the Waitai-Coastal-
Burwood-Linwood Community
Board chair Paul McMahon
said: “On Wednesday, March 22
I was informed by the office of
the CCC chief executive that it
would be completed in August/
September.
“I will find out what’s behind
the delay and get back to you.”
The playground has now
been ripped up, and Citycare
workers began removing the old
structure and flattening the area
last Wednesday.
The work is expected to take
two to three weeks to complete.
“The playground is something
that is needed by the community
and has been missed by local
families,” said McMahon.
“Neighbourhood playgrounds
like this are much-loved and
provide a place for kids to enjoy
themselves actively.
“It’s really good that the
community spoke up (on
Facebook) and reminded the
council about the playground.
Local democracy is something
we do together.”
The Bromley community
group is planning to have an
opening event in December, and
McMahon said Citycare has
offered to host an opening BBQ.

through and the hold up was
due to delays in manufacturing
of the equipment.

Recently Steve, our eldest son Connor
and I had the opportunity to attend the
Singapore vet conference and then travel to
Cambodia to catch up with a vet friend and
experience the cuisine, culture and unique
sites of Siem Reap.

Singapore vet conference
I’d never experienced Singapore before and
it was quite unbelievable in many ways.
Very clean and tidy, well organised with
high rise appartments and commercial
buildings covering the landscape. Loads of
upmarket boutique stores, so much choice
with food, just an easy place to live I’d
imagine.
The conference was fun. Most entertaining
were the medicine lectures with David
Church and his wife Jill Maddison.
A power couple that just know it all.
I was so impressed I introduced myself as
a die hard fan over the years (I listen to
their vet podcasts) and purchased their
text “Clinical Reasoning”. I also enjoyed
the Dentistry, Oncology, Surgical and
Behavioural lectures. Lots of take home
points to put into action at MMH vets.

for Connor and
discovering
a Chilean
Chardonnay…..
and the “Jewel”.

officials shaking our hands, drapping us in
scarves and taking photos. Quite Surreal.

jammed full of
families and Tuk
Tuks weaving
in and out. Rice
fields were dotted
all over, and it was
really colourful,
with bright
houses, clothing
and road side stalls. Cambodians are

generally a smiley, friendly, helpful people.

better as they were
our tour guides
when we visited the
Kulen Elephants,
the Angkor Wat

tour and the Apopo
rats that detect the

(fabulous clever
little creatures).
There was so much
to learn about the
culture, their politics, arranged marriages
and the wars they have lived through.
My Friend has a vet practice, so we visited
and got some glimpses of what its like to
treat all animals in a 3rd World country,
with virtually
no diagnostic
equipment
in clinic and a
sparce amount of
drugs. Saw some
unforgettable
cases. We also
fell in love with
the cuisine,
exquisite tastes,
presentation and

at Trish’s clinic
price of food.
Saw many
street animals,
packs of dogs
and lone cats, moving free range through
the city, like to gather at intersections. All
looked happy, well fed and healthy. Didn’t
approach me which was probably a good
thing as I would have needed to befriend
them…….Rabies risk intensified! The cows
grazing where ever they pleased also
looked content and well cared for.
Was great fun for Steve and I travelling with
Connor and attending a vet conference
together. We all have our different interest
areas and we love discussing lectures, cases
and devising future plans. I think another
family holiday to Asia is in order one day,
with all 3 sons in tow ( maybe partners too).
I just want to wish all MMH readers a safe,
healthy, sunny Christmas and summer
holidays, enjoying special fun times with
family and friends. See you again in 2024
where I will be writing in The Star.

SLIMING TEACHERS, a wheel-a-thon
and selling cupcakes were just some of
the fun activities children at BestStart
Wainoni Rd got involved in for the annual
Plunket fundraising appeal this year.
The centre was the biggest contributor to
the appeal this year, raising $2124.
Whānau Āwhina Plunket chief executive
Fiona Kingsford paid a visit to the centre
to personally thank children and their
families and the wider community.
She was “grateful” and “humbled”
by the efforts from families for the
fundraiser.
“We know a lot of whānau are doing it
tough this year, with the increased cost of
living across Aotearoa New Zealand.
“Being a charity, Whānau Āwhina
Plunket could not do what we do without
the amazing support from organisations
like BestStart.”
Said BestStart Wainoni Rd centre
manager Jessica Johnston: “We’ve always
known we have a wonderful community
here at BestStart Wainoni Rd, but
the generosity of our whānau and the
enthusiasm of our team this year has
absolutely blown me away.”
This year BestStart centres raised a total
of more than $49,000.

Said Kearney: “ŌCHT is in the
early stages of considering redevelopment
of our ageing Elm
Grove complex, and we have
engaged with tenants and local
residents as part of this process.”
Baiteary said residents appreciated
being part of what
appeared to be a consultation
process.
She sensed at the meeting
a willingness from residents
to support some new social
housing, but “it was clear that
the current strong community
dynamic should be maintained”.
Concerns voiced included
increasing the number of units
from seven to 12, the height of
the buildings as the current heritage
area rule for development
is single storey, and the population
mix.
“The neighbourhood is a
small, friendly and supportive
community which has always
included the pensioners/social
housing as much as anyone
wants to be included. The context
of the Englefield Avonville
heritage area is important to our
community,” said Baiteary.
“Many of the residents have
lived in the area between five to
40 years. It is this stability that
engenders a strong and supportive
community.”
McLellan said he was committed
to social housing and
working with residents.
“We wish to have good-quality
housing go in and to make sure
any redevelopment doesn’t take
away from the character of the
area.”
City council head of planning
and consent John Higgins said
while the units are in the heritage
area, the specific buildings
are not protected.
“Resource consent is required
for new buildings where applications
are assessed against a
number of District Plan provisions
including the residential
design principles. There is also
the Englefield Character Area
Guidelines which applicants are
encouraged to consider when
designing new buildings.”
The guidelines state Englefield
has city-wide significance as an

Park evolve over the years. There’s

with the earthquake in there
and we’re still working through
things.
“I simply enjoy the place. People
having picnics, camping or cycling
right through to Bottle Lake.
It’s just great.”

most beloved rangers”.
“Steve is a figure of mana. I
looked up to Steve when I first
started on the team, and I still do.
This is one of the most prestigious
awards in the parks space and I
couldn’t think of anyone more
deserving,” he said.
