CANCER SUFFERER IN 

THE RACE OF HER LIFE

KATIE COX thought nothing of 

a cough she developed in early 

September. 

It came on the back of one of 

the bleakest and wettest winters 

Canterbury had experienced for 

some years. 

The 33-year-old could count the 

number of times she had been to a 

doctor on one hand. Training and 

driving harness racing horses had 

kept her fit and healthy. 

But the cough stuck around and 

by late September, she had developed 

chest pains, prompting her to go to 

the doctor. 

“All it was was a bit of a cough, bit 

of a winter cough, you know it wasn’t 

that much. I just thought I’ll go to 

the doctor and get some antibiotics,” 

Cox said. 

“The doctor gave me some 

antibiotics and thought it was most 

likely a bit of a chest infection.” 

When she returned for a new 

prescription, her doctor sent her for a 

chest x-ray as a precaution. 

Having never smoked or vaped 

Cox did not think much of it.

SELWYN REMAINS one of the 

fastest growing economies in 

the country, new economic 

figures show. 

Latest figures from economic 

analyst Infometrics show the 

district’s economy grew by 3.5 

per cent GDP over the year 

to September, making it the 

third fastest growing territorial 

authority. 

The figures show Selwyn’s 

economy stands resilient, 

supported by robust employment 

and consumer spending. 

A 5.9 per cent growth in 

employment of residents over the 

year to September underlined 

the growing diversity of the 

Selwyn economy with growth 

in every industry except 

agriculture. This employment 

surge is underpinned by strong 

population growth, estimated at 

5.2 per cent in the year to June 

by Stats NZ. 

Consumer spending in Selwyn 

has seen an impressive increase, 

with a 12.4 per cent growth 

over the year to September. This 

growth accelerated to 15 per 

cent in the September quarter, 

highlighting the district’s robust 

economic health. 

Rising prices and a burgeoning 

population are identified as key 

drivers behind the consumer 

spending growth. This trend 

not only points to economic 

prosperity but also signifies 

a high level of consumer 

confidence within the district. 

While house values in Selwyn 

experienced a moderate decline,

sales volumes were up by 9.1 per 

cent over the year to September, 

compared to the 7.6 per cent fall 

observed in Canterbury and 13.7 

per cent fall nationally during 

the same period. 

There are indications of 

investment in new houses 

slowing down. In the September 

quarter, only 291 new dwellings 

were consented in Selwyn, 

marking it the district’s lowest 

figure since 2019. This trend 

aligns with broader challenges 

faced by the residential 

construction sector, including 

rising build costs and high 

interest rates. 

The continued growth in 

the economy even during a 

slowdown in construction 

highlights a shift towards a more 

diversified economy with less 

reliance on construction.

DUNSANDEL CAR FIRES 

Dunsandel Volunteer Fire 

Brigade was called to three 

separate car fires in the past 

week. Firefighter Al Sheppard 

said the fires were in the Selwyn 

River bed, Bankside, and 

Killinchy. Sheppard said all 

three were deliberately lit. He 

said it was unusual for there to 

be so many in such a short space 

of time. 

VEGETATION FIRE AT 

TAUMUTU BEACH 

Southbridge Volunteer Fire 

Brigade chief Shane King has 

urged people to ensure any 

beach fires are fully out before 

leaving them. This comes after 

the brigade attended a vegetation 

fire at Taumutu at 11pm on 

Tuesday last week. King 

said the fire was about 

300sq m in size and took three 

hours to put out. Southbridge 

was supported by a crew from 

Darfield who have a four-wheel 

drive fire truck. 

PINE TREES ALIGHT ON 

AYLESBURY RD 

A number of fire crews were 

called in to extinguish a group 

of dead pine trees that caught 

on fire on Aylesbury Rd near 

Coronation Park in Burnham. 

The fire at 2.15pm on Thursday 

was about 500sq m in size and 

took about an hour for crews 

to get contained. The cause is 

unknown.

Day of diagnosis: ‘We thought

“We thought they must have 

had the wrong person,” Cox said. 

While on the antibiotics, Cox 

felt well and even won a race in 

Timaru on October 1. 

“That’s probably the bizarre 

thing about it for someone who’s 

fit and healthy and never had 

anything more than a cold to 

have a bit of a cough and find it’s 

something so serious it certainly 

surprises you,” she said. 

Studies have found her rare 

form of lung cancer, called non- 

private health system. 

Following her diagnosis, an appeal 

was set up by Craig Wiggins, 

Cox’s friend and the founder of 

Whatever with Wiggy Charitable 

Trust. 

The appeal has now raised 

about $300,000. Money has been 

raised through at a Melbourne 

Cup luncheon and auction at 

Addington, as well as racers donating 

an equivalent of a driving 

fee or some of their winnings, 

and general donations to the 

appeal. 

that otherwise you just couldn’t 

really self-fund.” 

Currently, the Osimertinib 

oral drug she is on costs about 

$120,000, with no indication 

of how long she will need to be 

taking it or any other drug in the 

future. 

All of the money raised is going 

towards her treatment, including 

the cost of the drug and other 

medical costs. 

Cox has now been on the 

medication for about a month 

and has noticed a difference.

The x-ray did show some 

blockage in her lung, but again 

she was not worried. 

“When it showed my lung 

was a bit blocked there was a 

possibility it could have just been 

a bit of grit or something off the 

track. 

“It wasn’t until they did the CT 

scan and biopsy that we knew it 

was cancerous.” 

It was about a month between 

the first doctor’s visit and the 

cancer diagnosis. 

Cox, who was reluctant to talk 

about the day she found out the 

diagnosis, was with her mum 

Wendy, and partner, when the 

doctor delivered the news she had 

lung cancer. 

She still did not believe it as she 

small-cell adenocarcinoma EGFR 

Exon 20 with variant N771, is 

more common in non-smokers 

and women. 

The oncologist has given Cox 

no indication of what may have 

been the cause. 

Cox was told by the oncologist 

because she was healthy the 

cancer did not show any 

symptoms until it was very 

advanced. 

The variant she has can be 

treated through medication, with 

Cox hoping research can produce 

a cure. However the medication 

is not funded, and all her 

treatment has to go through the

Last week a yearling named 

Courageous Katie sold for 

$12,000 with all proceeds going 

to the Katie Cox Appeal Fund. As 

part of the sale, a 5 per cent share 

in the ongoing ownership of the 

filly will go to Cox. 

Cox said without the support 

of the community she would 

not have been able to get the 

treatment needed. 

“Without that, I could not have 

gone onto this drug. So I’ve been 

really fortunate that it has given 

me a chance to get onto a drug

“I actually feel reasonably well, 

a few weeks ago I was pretty 

short on breath and tight on my 

chest.” 

Cox is trying not to dwell on the 

diagnosis too much as she moves 

forward with her treatment. 

“You’ve just got to get on and 

come up with the best thing you 

can.” 

She did not want talk about 

her chances of survival. Research 

shows people with the lung 

cancer have an average life expectancy 

of nine months to five 

years. 

She will be getting another CT 

scan in January. 

Due to her illness, Cox has 

had to put training any horses 

at her Leeston property on hold 

for now. Currently, she is only 

tending to her own horses, with 

the others being sent to other 

trainers. 

“I’m not working any horses 

and staff working for me unfortunately 

I had to lay them all off.” 

Before becoming ill Cox 

would be working from dawn 

to dusk. She would be training 

and breaking in up to 20 horses 

at a time. 

For Cox, this is the first time in 

30 years she hasn’t been able to 

ride or drive horses. 

Wendy first introduced her to 

horses when she was three with 

riding lessons. 

“When I was about five or six 

the neighbours had some donkeys 

and I rode them quite a bit,” 

she said. 

Early on in her career, she 

focused on showjumping, travelling 

to the United States for a few 

months, competing in Ohio and 

Kentucky. She also competed for 

the New Zealand Young Riders 

team. 

After returning from the US 

Cox spent three years at Lincoln 

University doing a degree in 

property valuation and management. 

Between 2013 and 2017 she 

had a small number of starters, 

as her core business at that stage 

was breaking in horses. 

Her first official training win 

was with Mad Lu Li at Geraldine 

in November 2017. 

Cox’s best season to date was 

in 2021 when she trained 10 

winners including Spy Da Moment, 

which has six wins from 

60 starts. 

About six years ago she 

achieved a lifetime goal of 

her own stable, purchasing a

property in Leeston after having 

worked for other trainers 

while living in Tai Tapu and 

Springston. 

The stable is named Te Awatea 

after her great-grandfather and 

her grandfather’s farm on the 

Chatham Islands. 

This year she reached a career 

total of 100 driving wins, her 

most memorable coming in May 

when she trained and drove It’s 

Tough in the Group 2 Welcome 

Stakes win at Addington Raceway. 

While Cox is sidelined she will 

be hoping to get to the track as a 

spectator.

Cricket club to play 

on field regardless 


LINCOLN CRICKET has 

vowed to host its club day on 

Saturday regardless of whether 

its home ground is closed by the 

council or not. 

The main cricket field at the 

Lincoln Domain is closed while 

the council repairs it following 

winter. It is expected to reopen 

for play on Saturday. 

Lincoln Cricket Club president 

Tony McKenzie said they have 

not been able to use the ground 

this season. 

“We’ll be on the fields 

Saturday, no matter what.” 

On Saturday all 21 junior and 

senior teams will be playing at 

the domain and at Lincoln High 

School. 

“It’s been a real issue,” 

McKenzie said of the ground’s 

closure. 

“We’ve been having to play all 

our home games up in Rangiora 

at $120 a throw.” 

The council has agreed to 

reimburse the cost of the field 

hire in Rangiora. 

McKenzie was critical repair 

work was not carried out until 

a week before the cricket season 

starting on October 5.

He said the grass seed sown by 

the council did not grow the first 

time, so it had to try again. 

“It is a bit of a mess at the 

moment, unfortunately.” 

Council reserves operations 

manager Jonathan Crawford 

said wet weather delayed the 

work, and it was hoped the field 

would be open for Saturday. 

But McKenzie said if it was 

closed, they would still play on 

it. 

Said Crawford: “We’re happy 

to speak directly any time with 

clubs about any issues around 

access to grounds.” 

Also affected by the closure is 

the Lincoln Golden Oldies touch 

rugby. 

Golden Oldies president Mark 

Tweedy said they were able to 

play on the field a fortnight ago, 

but have since been told by the 

council not to use it. 

Tweedy said the club is now 

using the back fields, meaning 

fewer people are patronising the 

bar at the clubrooms. 

“No one is coming into our 

bar, which we rely on it for our 

revenue,” Tweedy said.

THE DESIGN of the second 

Rolleston College campus has 

been unveiled. 

The second campus on the 

corner of Selwyn and Springston 

Rolleston Rds will be completed 

in three stages. It is expected to 

bring the school roll to 3400. 

The first stage was due to be 

finished by the start of 2025, 

but processing delays from the 

Ministry of Education have 

pushed the scheduled completion 

date out to mid-2025. 

Ground preparation for the 

college’s second campus got 

under way last month. 

The senior campus will be 

built by Southbase Construction 

and completed in three stages, 

with the first to feature a 

science and technology block, 

gymnasium and modular 

provisioning allowing for 

curriculum delivery during 

stages two and three. 

The college said on Facebook: 

“Releasing this tender marks 

an exciting new phase for our 

Rolleston College whānau and 

the wider Rolleston community 

to finally visualise the new senior 

campus which the design team 

has worked incredibly hard on.” 

The final cladding and colours 

are yet to be confirmed.

Welcome back to The Bridge 

Prebbleton’s population 

is on the rise and so 

too are the number 

of pubs, with the 

reopening of an old 

favourite. Daniel Alvey 

reports 

TWENTY-THREE years since 

it first opened, The Bridge 

Restaurant and Bar has been 

restored to its former glory. 

New owner Melissa Smith said 

there has been a lot of work to 

bring the pub back to life. 

“We’ve re-done 90 per cent 

of the electrical work . . . The 

interior has been entirely 

replaced.” 

Smith and her husband, 

Murray, bought the lease for the 

business in August, taking over 

from the pub chain Armadillos, 

which closed last year. 

The couple, who own The Tap 

in Tai Tapu, saw The Bridge as 

an opportunity to cater to the 

town’s growing population. 

Since 2000 when The Bridge 

was first opened, Prebbleton’s 

population has grown from 1010 

to 5260 in 2022. Statisiscs show 

Prebbleton will grow by 62 per 

cent to about 8000 in the next 30 

years. 

Smith said The Bridge will be 

marketed at families. 

“We see families as a gap in 

the market in Prebbleton and 

something we can cater to.” 

She said The Bridge would not 

be a copy of The Tap, and would 

offer its own style. 

“We will have music, but it will 

be quieter. We know we are in 

a more residential environment 

here.” 

She said along with families, 

old customers of The Bridge have 

returned. 

“We had a group come in their 

old Bridge pub club shirts who 

used to come here.” 

Smith said they were 

considering starting up a 

members’ club again. 

Prebbleton resident Les Sim 

had returned to his spot at the 

end of the bar. He said it was 

great to see it open again. 

“We’ve been out here for 11 

years, and it’s nice to come back. 

“It got a bit run down as 

Armadillos and wasn’t as good.” 

Sim, who lives within walking 

distance of the pub, said he 

would come past checking on 

the rebuild progress. 

Also back was Rick McKenzie 

who had been coming to The 

Bridge since 2008. 

“The team have done a really 

good job of bringing it back to 

life.” 

McKenzie said it would be 

an asset to the Prebbleton

“We welcome any new 

business to Prebbleton and wish 

them all the best.” 

The Good Home Prebbleton 

owner Brad Jaques said 

competition was good for the 

town. 

“It adds competition but we 

are pitching at a slightly different 

market.” 

Jaques thought the number of 

hospitality places in Prebbleton 

was lagging behind the town’s 

population. 

“I think Prebbleton is big 

enough now to support a 

couple of decent hospitality 

places now, so I don’t think it’s a 

negative.” 

Deputy mayor Malcolm Lyall 

was also happy to see The Bridge 

back in action. 

“The more, the merrier. With 

the consented expansion of 

a couple more subdivisions 

coming up in the next two or 

three years, there will be several 

thousand more people. 

“I think The Bridge will 

give us a style of hospitality we 

don’t necessarily have in 

the community.” 

Lincoln High adventurers ready to trek 

FOURTEEN months of 

preparation are coming to a head 

as Lincoln High School students 

get ready to jet off to Nepal. 

The 29 students are scheduled 

to depart on Tuesday for a threeweek 

expedition of trekking, 

volunteer service and travel. 

The group will travel with 

World Challenge, a global experiential 

travel provider for schools. 

Said deputy principal Kylie 

Horgan: “The journeys are led 

by the students once they are 

in Nepal, with the oversight of 

two teachers and an expedition 

leader. 

“Alongside this, students also 

undertake learning modules 

about sustainable travel, wellbeing, 

global citizenship and comfort 

zones.” 

After a successful expedition 

in 2018, the school had planned 

it’s second World Challenge trip 

to Ecuador and the Galapagos 

Islands in 2020, but the trip was 

cancelled due to Covid. 

“This makes the upcoming 

trip even more exciting as we are 

about to take our young people 

again to become curious and 

adventurous explorers of the 

world,” Horgan said. 

Students will spend time in 

Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and 

Pokhara as well as undertake 

volunteer work at a local school. 

“They will sleep on the floor 

in one of the classrooms and the 

work could include activities like 

building paintwork, earthworks, 

helping build toilets or stormwater 

systems. Anything the school 

needs that they can help with,” 

said Horgan. 

The final part of the trip is to 

do the Langtang Valley Trek 

which is an eight-day 4773m 

ascent to the top peak of 

Kyangjin Ri. 

Horgan thanked local businesses 

and the community for 

their support in getting the 

group to Nepal. 

“Without support from our 

community, so many more 

barriers would exist for our 

students to be able to take 

these opportunities.”

Some 28 years ago we purchased

part of the Barton Fields dairy

Our land had been planted 

out in various types of trees. 

This proved to be a non-viable 

venture so they were progressively 

removed. 

It has been, however, a great 

place to raise two young sons. 

Then, along came a new residential 

subdivision next door, 

also on the Barton Fields land. 

All good. New residents arrive. 

All is happy! 

Until we want to develop our 

piece of land. Then, it seems, 

then moat syndrome applies. 

No one else is allowed in! 

Because of the transmission 

lines, parts of the property is 

not suitable for residential. 

Hence the reason for light 

commercial.

residents really expect the 

rural land to the west would 

stay that way forever?

Maternity hospital’s emotional farewell 

THOSE WITH a special 

connection to the Lincoln 

Maternity Hospital have had the 

chance to say goodbye. 

A farewell to the unit was held 

on Saturday, November 11. 

Thousands of people moved 

through the unit between its 

opening in 1927 and its closure 

95 years later in 2022 – with 

almost 200 births and over 500 

postnatal stays in its last 12 

months of operation alone. 

Bronwyn Torrance, former 

midwife manager at Lincoln 

and now midwife manager at 

Oromairaki in Rolleston, said 

those who attended the farewell 

included former staff and 

patients. 

“It was an emotional but 

healing way to say farewell to a 

beautiful building and grounds 

that had such a significant role 

in the community,” said 

Torrance. 

“Thanks to mana whenua, 

Te Taumutu Runanga. Their 

presence and guidance for 

this special occasion was truly 

appreciated. The karakia process 

led by Corban Te Aika left few 

dry eyes.” 

Torrance said staff, both past 

and present at the farewell, 

had contributed to a “beautiful 

legacy that we take with us to 

Oromairaki Maternity Unit”. 

For 100-year-old mother, 

grandmother and great 

grandmother Venus Doreen 

Bailey, it was a time to reflect 

on precious memories. Bailey’s 

family has strong ties to 

Lincoln – her four children, and 

grandchildren, were born 

there. 

Maternity services transferred 

to Oromairaki in the Selwyn 

Health Hub in May 2022, 

providing families of the region 

with greater capacity and stateof-the-art 

facilities. 

Said Torrance: “While Lincoln 

Hospital was a very special 

place, this new facility is vitally 

important for our fast-growing 

district, as it has means we have 

been able to have more births 

in the unit and more postnatal 

stays for those who have birthed 

at Christchurch Women’s 

Hospital.”

Shayden Saunders welcomed 

Micah, the last baby born at 

Lincoln Maternity Hospital, on 

May 3 last year. 

Torrance said Te Whatu Ora 

is undertaking a wider review 

of property required to meet the 

long-term health needs of the 

region before a decision is made 

on the future of the hospital 

building and grounds. 

In the interim, Lincoln 

Community Gardens will 

continue using the site.

Love for ballet leads to world travel

EVERY DANCER’S journey 

begins with a dream, and 

young ballerina Tamison 

Soppet is one step closer to 

realising hers after accepting 

scholarships from three 

international dance schools. 

The 13-year-old from Lincoln 

will head to the Royal Ballet 

School in London, John Cranko 

Ballet in Germany, and Princess 

Grace Dance Academy in 

Monaco next year after being 

offered scholarships to attend 

each for up to four weeks. 

Said mum Toni Soppet: “She is 

very excited to be going out into 

the big wide world; she’s nervous 

but grounded and is the type to 

be on stage and dance to make 

people smile. 

“We have the opportunity 

to first go to New York for the 

Youth Grand Prix ballet finals 

and, in July, Tamison would 

like to go to a summer school in 

Winnipeg on a scholarship she 

was offered last year. 

“Then, we will come home for 

a bit before leaving to go to each 

of the schools in Europe.” 

Tamison, a Convergence 

Dance Studios student, was also 

offered a fourth scholarship to 

the Australian Ballet School in 

Melbourne, which Soppet said 

was “not being ruled out”. 

To help fund the trip, a 

Givealittle page called: “Ballet 

Beyond Boundaries: Supporting 

Tamison’s Dance Destiny” was 

set up last week, with a goal 

of $25,000.

just a hobby; it’s her passion, 

a profound expression of her 

soul.

A FATHER has been found not 

guilty of encouraging an alleged 

race that led to the death of his 

son and family friend and the 

serious injury of his two other 

sons. 

Sighs of relief could be heard 

from the packed district court 

gallery when the jury delivered 

its verdict to Mark Nicholl snr. 

The 55-year-old’s son, Mark 

Nicholl jnr, 30, and family friend 

William Clark, 29, were both 

killed in the crash on September 

25, 2021. Another son, Jayden 

Nicholl, was seriously injured 

and a third son, Shanan Nicholl, 

suffered a traumatic brain injury. 

After the verdict was delivered 

there was a minute of silence in 

the courtroom to honour Nicholl 

jnr and Clark’s lives. 

Judge Gerard Lynch summed 

up the case to the jury before 

they began deliberating. 

Nicholl snr faced two charges 

of being a party to dangerous 

driving causing death and one 

of dangerous driving causing 

injury. 

He acknowledged the loss 

Nicholl snr and his family had 

suffered through the death of 

one son and injuries to the other 

two, as well as the loss the Clark 

family had suffered. 

Judge Lynch reminded the jury 

to put any feelings of sympathy 

or prejudice aside when reaching 

their verdict and focus solely on 

whether the Crown had proved 

its case. 

He said the Crown case was 

that right from the moment the 

group left Armadillos in Islington, 

Nicholl snr had “ignited the 

flame” and encouraged his son 

Shanan and nephew Ricky to 

race. 

Crown prosecutor Deirdre 

Elsmore said Nicholl snr had 

sped down Main South Rd and 


by the time Shanan had lined up 

next to him at the traffic lights, 

the message was clearly sent that 

“dad’s on board” as he followed 

his son in “hot pursuit” after the 

lights turned green.

case was that it was simply

bit like forcing a square peg into 

a round hole”. 

He thanked the jury for their 

service in what had been a “difficult 

trial for everyone” before 

commencing a minute of silence 

for the two young men who died. 

Shanan originally faced the 

same charges as his father – two 

charges of being a party to dangerous 

driving causing death and 

one of dangerous driving causing 

injury – but was considered unfit 

to stand trial because of his brain 

injury and was discharged. 

Nicholl snr’s nephew, Ricky 

Nicholl, has pleaded guilty to the 

same charges Nicholl Snr faces, 

as well as a charge of attempting 

to pervert the course of justice by 

swapping seats with passenger 

Matthew Gibbons after the 

crash. 

Ricky will be sentenced in 

March next year.

Selwyn residents are being asked to help grow a strategy to protect our unique 

natural heritage. 

Council has released its first proposed Selwyn Biodiversity Strategy for residents 

to view and provide their feedback. The strategy is open for consultation until 

Friday 15 December. 

Indigenous biodiversity encompasses all life on land, in freshwater, and the 

sea, reflecting the unique mix that is native to Aotearoa New Zealand and is 

represented here in Waikirikiri Selwyn. 

The proposed strategy outlines Council's plan to protect, maintain, and restore 

indigenous biodiversity, beginning with safeguarding what remains and restoring 

lost elements. Council Executive Director Tim Harris emphasises the significance 

of this strategy as a chance for residents to contribute to caring for, restoring, and 

growing our local biodiversity. 

"In Aotearoa New Zealand and Waikirikiri Selwyn, we have a distinct collection 

of plants and animals that is found nowhere else globally. Your feedback on 

the proposed goals and actions is crucial in safeguarding and enhancing our 

unique biodiversity." 

With challenges and opportunities ahead looking after ecosystems stretching 

from mountains to sea, we urge residents to participate and provide feedback.

Ellesmere Community Recycling Day 

Ellesmere residents, it’s time to tidy up your backyards, sheds, and garages. 

Your community recycling drop-off day is coming up on Sunday 26 

November, at Cemetery Pit, Southbridge Leeston Road, 10am to 4pm. 

Take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of a variety of items, from old 

child car seats and E-waste to scrap metal, garden waste, and old tyres. 

The drop-off is free for scrap metal, including old bicycles, BBQs, small 

appliances, whiteware, and pots and pans. However, charges apply for bulkier 

items that would be too large for your wheelie bin like couches, mattresses, 

desks, and curtains. 

Green waste, tyres, car seats, and certain E-waste items like TVs and 

monitors also have associated charges. However, disposal of other E-waste 

and recyclable cardboard items is free. 

Please note that smelly or wet waste, that can't be easily transferred to a skip 

without creating a mess, cannot be accepted. Hazardous waste, gas bottles, 

items containing oil or fuel, and tyres covered in dirt are also not accepted. 

Please also remember that flax, cabbage tree leaves, trees, or branches 

over 10cm in diameter cannot be included, but they can be accepted as 

general rubbish. 

Only household quantities will be accepted, and please ensure you are 

prepared to unload your own materials. 

Cash only (no eftpos) and a donation will be made to a local not-for-profit 

organisation for their help with this event.

Croquet grounds coming to Broadfield Reserve 

The first croquet grounds in Selwyn are now under 

development at Broadfield Reserve on Robinsons 

Road, opposite Broadfield School. This project, 

identified as part of Council's Long-term Plan, is 

now underway with construction in progress to 

create four croquet lawns. 

Council's Land Development Project Manager 

Gareth Ford said “we’re really pleased to have 

started work on this project. The development 

highlights the Council's commitment to enhancing 

recreational facilities for Selwyn residents.” 

These lawns will serve as the home grounds for 

the newly established Broadfield Croquet Club. John Dewar, representing Broadfield Croquet Club, 

said he was delighted that the physical works were underway. 

“The response and support we’ve had from Council has been fantastic. Croquet provides a great 

opportunity to stay fit, acquire new skills, and socialise with like-minded individuals. Having a local 

club in our district will be a great asset for our community”. 

Scheduled for completion in February 2024, the croquet lawns will be ready for action in the

Burning desire to make a difference 

LINCOLN University students 

Ben Chambers and Hamish 

Goatley are both driven to 

help others and develop their 

firefighting skills. 

They have both recieved Gold 

Awards from the university, 

which recognise student 

contribution to the community, 

for their work with the Lincoln 

Volunteer Fire Brigade. 

They balance their studies 

with training and responding 

to callouts to fires, accidents 

and other emergencies and even 

compete together in regional and 

national firefighter competitions. 

Chambers and Goatley have 

both followed family members 

into the fire service. 

Chambers, who studies 

agricultural science, grew up 

in Geraldine in a “fire brigade 

family.” 

“My father 

and grandfather 

were longserving 

volunteers 

for their 

communities, 

so I was often

Fire Brigade in 2021 to help

Chambers said the time 

commitments for being a 

volunteer firefighter are 

“significant” with two-to-threehour 

weekly trainings, and with 

callouts happening at any time 

of the day or night. With the 

possibility of multiple calls in 

one day, commitments can range 

from two hours to upwards of 30 

hours per week. 

Goatley started in 2017 as a 

16-year-old, in 

the Mataura 

Brigade, near 

Gore, his 

hometown. 

He transferred 

to the Lincoln 

brigade when 

he started his 

Hamish 

studies, but is Goatley 

still a member 

of the Mataura unit, where he 

learnt a lot of his skills. 

Goatley, who studies land 

and property management 

at Lincoln, said balancing 

his studies and the time 

commitment of the brigade was 

“an ongoing battle.” 

“I attempt as much as possible 

to keep ahead of work in case the 

siren goes. However, when I have 

been snowed under with work, 

there has been an understanding 

and the ability to go on leave to 

manage the workload better.” 

Overall, he said, it had worked 

well. 

Chambers said he really 

enjoyed being there for someone 

in their time of need and helping 

them through the worst time of 

their lives leaves a very positive 

and humbling indelible mark 

with him. 

“It reaffirms why I choose to 

volunteer my time to help others. 

“At the core of what firefighters 

do is fight fire, so seeing a 

roaring fire and fighting it 

up-close and personal is a 

real adrenaline rush that stays 

with you, just like working 

with five other people on the 

truck to solve sometimes very 

challenging and complex puzzles 

in order to work out the best 

possible outcome for patients, 

compromised structures or cars, 

or even ducklings. 

“However, there are 

components of firefighting 

that make the job tough, such 

as experiencing first-hand the 

damage that distracted and 

intoxicated drivers cause to 

others on the road, medical 

emergencies, and dealing with 

fatalities. 

“Although there are tough 

components of this job, being 

a part of a tight-knit team that 

looks out for one-another makes 

it much easier to deal with the 

tough parts, as you deal with it 

as a team,” he said. 

For Goatley, the best part of 

the role was meeting great likeminded 

people from around 

New Zealand in different courses 

and competitions. 

“I also enjoy making a positive 

difference in other people’s lives 

in their hour of need and helping 

them through what is usually 

one of the most challenging days 

of their lives,” he said. 

“Some of the problematic 

parts are what you are exposed 

to, the follow-on effects that you 

see on the family, and what you 

experience yourself. 

“However, there is a very 

supportive brigade environment 

in Mataura and Lincoln, 

and additional counselling if 

required. With this additional 

support, the job is more than 

achievable.”

Families in Ukraine 

need your help! 

The Sechka family live in a rural area 

of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in 

an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo, 

40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to 

provide for their family. They face a massive 

challenge as three of their five children have 

severe disabilities. One of their daughters 

is unable to walk at all. The health of 

their children means they need medical 

examinations, check-ups, and treatment. 

Which costs money. 

Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but 

when the war began, he lost most of his 

wages then he had to quit. Since then, he 

has focused on farming and keeps cows, 

pigs, geese, and poultry to survive. 

Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they 

are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate 

a lot of land to grow forage for the animals, 

and vegetables and grain for the family. He 

was using an old tractor that he bought 15 

years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and 

required constant repair. Mykhailo says that 

after each working day he had to repair it 

and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then, 

the old tractor became a place where Mieko 

and his siblings play. 

Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts, 

the family’s situation became very difficult. 

The loss of income, health issues and the 

ongoing war has taken its toll. 

Mieko’s family need help with resources, 

such as tools and machinery, so they can 

grow food for themselves. 

Right now, the Ukrainian economy 

is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So, 

supporting families just like Mieko’s with a 

self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline. 

Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have 

resulted in physical and psychological 

issues. There is no doubt that the impact 

of war will be felt by his family and many 

others for years to come.

Small plots can still grow berries 

Fruit 

Even in a tiny garden, space 

can be found for strawberries. 

Tall planters with holes on the 

sides can be decorative as well as 

useful. Stones or broken bricks at 

the bottom of the container help 

keep tall pots stable and ensure 

good drainage. Potting mix is 

put in to just below the first holes 

and the plants positioned to 

poke out of the holes. Add more 

potting mix and strawberries, 

finishing with two or three on 

top. The containers should be 

kept well-watered. 

In a garden bed, strawberries 

that have flowered should have 

straw or dry pine needles spread 

under the plants so the berries 

will be kept clean and dry. 

Vegetables 

At this time of year, potatoes 

can be earthed up easily when 

the soil has been softened by 

rain. They can be grown successfully 

without this step, but 

hoeing the soil from between 

rows on to the bases of the 

plants prevents the tubers being 

exposed to air and turning green. 

Green potatoes should never be 

eaten. 

Mounding up should be done 

before the plant tops are too 

large and likely to be damaged 

during the process. 

Main-crop potatoes such as 

Red Rascal, Heather and Agria 

can be planted and good crops 

should be produced in all soils 

that retain moisture through to 

late summer. 

Onions sown now will not 

grow to full size, but will produce 

bulbs large enough for pickling. 

Make the ground rich and 

firm and sow in shallow drills. 

Autumn-sown onions should be 

growing well and will be helped 

along by an occasional watering 

with liquid manure and a topdressing 

of sulphate of potash. 

Runner beans live up to their 

name and growth should now 

be rapid. If not planted against 

a fence or trellis, or on a bean 

tepee, they will have to be staked. 

Put tall, 2m sticks on either side 

of the row and tie string along 

about halfway up and also near 

the top. Earthing up on either 

side of the plants helps them stay

in place in windy conditions. 

Keep the roots moist and cool 

with plenty of water. Lawn clippings 

can be used as a mulch but 

make each layer a thin one (1cm) 

as otherwise too much heat will 

be generated. 

Peas can be staked but growing 

against netting is more effective 

for tall varieties such as Alderman. 

Staple netting to several 

tall, strong stakes, leaving the 

lower 40cm or 50cm below the 

netting. This makes a movable 

fence that can be used for peas 

year after year. 

As the first tiny broad bean 

pods appear, the tip of each stem 

can be nipped out to help give a 

better crop. The green tips of the 

plants can be eaten in stir-fries. 

Rhubarb plants will weaken 

if too many stems are picked 

at once, so spread picking and 

take no more than a third of 

the leaves at any time. Rhubarb 

likes cool roots and is a greedy 

plant, so keep it well watered 

in dry weather, and work some 

compost around the base before 

watering. 

Flowers 

Removing dead heads from 

rhododendrons and azaleas is a 

chore but will pay dividends with 

better displays next spring. 

Sweet peas sown now will 

bloom late in the season. In general, 

heritage varieties have better 

perfume, but smaller flowers. 

Sweet pea seed can be sown in 

rich soil, then seedlings thinned 

to 10cm-12cm apart. Less 

wasteful is to sow them in seed 

boxes and plant out when the 

first pair of true leaves appears. 

Keep plants watered or they will 

produce small, miserable flowers 

on short stems. 

Primulas, polyanthus, 

primroses and auriculas should 

be divided as soon as the plants 

have finished flowering. Prepare 

ground for them by adding 

rotted horse or cow manure or 

compost. If the soil is heavy clay, 

add coarse river sand to help it 

drain better. The plants like to 

be firmly fixed in the soil with 

the lower leaves just above the 

surface. Old plants tend to lift 

themselves out of the soil and 

will fail to flower freely if left

Hedgehog

and spiny, the hedgehog plant is 

well named. 

Its botanical name, Erinacea 

anthyllis, is a combination of the 

Latin word for hedgehog (Erinaceus) 

while the species name 

anthyllis owes its origins to the 

similarity of its flowers to those of 

kidney vetch, Anthyllis vulneraria. 

The hedgehog plant belongs to 

the pea family. Its many tangled 

branchlets terminate in sharp 

upright spines that provide protection 

from browsing animals. 

In the garden, it can be rather 

painful to weed around. 

The nuisance of its bristly 

nature is forgiven when it flowers. 

In late spring the spiny dome 

turns lilac as it is smothered with 

hundreds of purple pea flowers. 

Erinacea anthyllis grows 

naturally in stony mountains in

ZR-V Hybrid ‘knocks it out of the park’

THE RUNAWAY success of 

Honda’s latest SUV, the ZR-V, has 

seen the hybrid version playing 

‘hard to get’ with a 1-2 month 

wait, for those who are fussy 

about the colour they want. 

This is an important model 

for Honda who have waited 

a long time to get a modern, 

well-packaged and good looking 

model, to help them make some 

genuine sales head-way in the 

compact hybrid urban SUV 

class. 

While Honda have offered 

hybrid technology across a 

raft of models for the Japanese 

domestic market, up until now 

they have been largely off limits 

here, except as used imports. 

When the current mini-sized 

Jazz hatch launched in 2021 it 

was the first Honda hybrid sold 

here in two decades. 

Honda’s ZR-V delivers a step 

change in hybrid electrification 

technology for the company. 

The beating heart of this is a 

new 2.0L e:HEV direct injection 

petrol engine. 

The hybrid power train is 

exclusive to the flagship $55,000 

ZR-V Sport Changes to the 

Government’s clean car fee 

scheme. Since July 1, many 

hybrid models, including the ZR- 

V, no longer qualify for a rebate, 

with more stringent emission 

thresholds in place. Unless a 

vehicle power train produces 

100g/km or less, it comes up 

empty handed in the race for 

a clean car rebate, with ZR-V’s 

126g/km failing to make the cut. 

Size-wise the ZR-V is smaller 

than the soon to be replaced 

CRV and probably closer in size 

to the Mazda CX5. It’s easy on 

the eye, with its clean, modern 

yet distinctively Honda-style 

silhouette that stands out from 

the compact SUV pack. 

LED lighting is used 

extensively for the exterior, along 

with daytime running lights, 

parking lights and fog lamps. 

However, it is done discretely 

enough that the vehicle doesn’t 

look like a Christmas tree on 

wheels. 

The hybrid system comprises 

two compact electric motors 

connected to a 1.5-litre turbo 

petrol engine, and a lithium-ion 

battery for a combined power 

output of 135kW and 315Nm 

of torque at just 2000rpm. The 

ZR-V 1.5 turbo we test drove a 

month or two back needs more 

than double that serving of revs 

to produce its maximum torque 

of 240Nm. 

In EV Drive, the lithium-ion 

battery supplies power directly to 

the electric motor, using Hybrid 

Drive and the engine supply’s 

power to the electric generator 

motor. This feeds into the electric 

motor. Finally there’s Engine 

Drive. Here the petrol engine is 

connected directly to the wheels 

via a lock-up clutch and the drive 

force is transmitted straight from 

motor to wheels. 

As a result the driving 

experience feels smoother, 

stronger and more refined, 

although this tapers off fairly 

sharply on the open road, when 

the vehicle is worked hard. The 

hybrid system conjures up a 

deft balance between power 

and torque to front foot our 

undulating roads. 

Around town it knocks it out 

of the park with a great blend of 

performance and fuel economy. 

A much-improved Constant 

Variable Transmission (CVT) is 

shared with the Honda Civic and 

features Normal and Eco driving 

modes and a user-selectable 

Sport mode. 

It’s a transmission 

that’s a good fit with 

the hybrid power 

train. In fact it’s so 

good, you would be 

hard pressed to pick 

this as a CVT. 

Once settled into 

the driver’s seat, I 

was in awe of the 

vast cabin area for a

maintenance and upkeep of buildings and vehicles. 

The purpose of this role is to assist with general building, and fleet maintenance 

at our Lincoln site. You will work in the Site Operations team to enhance the 

operation and appearance of the site and carry out intensive and regular building 

and vehicle checks. You will help liaise with contractors and interact with your 

team colleagues on a day-to-day basis to ensure stakeholder needs are met. 

This position is permanent full-time (part-time can be negotiated), reporting to the 

Facility Manager, and is based at our Lincoln site. 

To succeed in this physical hands-on role, you should possess a current full 

driver’s licence and be able to work both unsupervised and as part of a team. 

You will have practical maintenance skills, including basic repair methods, be 

proactive, have sound vehicle knowledge, and be an organised person with good 

interpersonal skills and the ability to complete work in a prompt and safe manner. 

Previous experience working in a commercial environment, as well as a general 

understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 is highly desirable.

Selwyn District Council are inviting public consultation on the Selwyn Biodiversity 

Strategy pursuant to Clause 83 of Part 6, Local Government Act 2002. 

Biodiversity is a term used to encapsulate everything that lives on the land, in the sea, the fresh 

water and the vast flora and fauna living within the Waikirikiri Selwyn district. The intention 

of this strategy is to provide a framework of how Council will work to protect the species 

endemic to our district, and our ecosystems more broadly, with a focus on protecting flora 

and fauna native to Aotearoa New Zealand (indigenous biodiversity). This reflects the Council’s 

requirement under Section 6(c) in the Resource Management Act 1991. 

This strategy aims to: 

• Work in partnership with mana whenua, landowners and other stakeholders to protect 

and restore indigenous biodiversity, 

• Understand the state of indigenous biodiversity within Selwyn, 

• Support actions by landowners and our community to protect indigenous biodiversity, 

• Encourage and increase the integration of indigenous species in modified environments. 

The Selwyn Biodiversity Strategy and associated documents can be read at the Council’s 

Rolleston offices, at any Council libraries and service centres in Darfield, Leeston, Lincoln and
