New Work – a textural delight
• By Dylan Smits
ARTISTS VICTORIA Pallin
and Lorelei Jenner are set to
captivate audiences with their
inaugural exhibition, New Work,
starting on Tuesday.
“This is a culmination of a
year’s work for us both, and we
are very excited to present our
work publicly,” Pallin said.
Pallin, of Sumner, will unveil
60 pieces of jewellery. Jenner,
of Mt Pleasant, will display 29
paintings and ceramics.
The two artists have pooled
their respective talents, hoping
to create a rich show across three
different artforms that flows
together seamlessly.
Jenner hopes viewers will
appreciate the vibrant colours,
textures and playfulness in
her work, while Pallin anticipates
visitors will enjoy the variety
within her collection of jewellery.
It is first time Pallin and
Jenner have collaborated on an
exhibition.
“We know each other very well
and share a great passion for all
types of art,” Pallin said.
The title ‘New Work’ reflects
the artists delving into new
artforms.
“New Work comes from a new
direction for me with my painting
and colour-work. Plus, I’ve
NEW DIRECTIONS: Lorelei Jenner will exhibit her paintings and ceramics alongside Victoria Pallin’s hand-forged silver
jewellery at Pumanawa Gallery from November 28.
only been working in ceramics
for two years,” Jenner said.
Pallin said all of her work
could be described as new “because
I’ve only been practicing
for three years”.
Jenner is a self-taught painter.
She has exhibited in New Zealand
and Australia over the past
two decades and earned recognition
as a finalist in the Wallace
Art Awards in 2001.
Reflecting on the technical
aspects of her art, she said, “All
of my ceramic pieces are thrown
on a wheel, not hand built. My
paintings are acrylic on board or
canvas.”
Pallin was born in Kuwait
and draws inspiration from the
region’s jewellery alongside contemporary
European styles.
She engages in intricate processes
such as sawing, texturing,
shaping and soldering and for
her jewellery.
Some of her pieces involve
the ancient Korean technique of
Keum Boo, the process of applying
24-carat gold leaf to silver
using heat.
Among the standout pieces at
the exhibition, Jenner
is proud of her ceramic
pedestal bowl
for its combination
of colours and expressive
pencil lines,
which mirrors her
turquoise and lime
painting (right).
Pallin said she is
particularly enthusiastic
about her cast silver bangles
and rings, emphasising the handforged
feel achieved through the
casting process.
Aiming to be
contemporary and
experimental, Pallin
said she favours
working with silver
to create a simple
geometric aesthetic.
New Work will
be open daily from
November 28 to
December 3 at the
Pumanawa Gallery in the Arts
Centre.
THIS BOOK
After coming out as gay, Craig Hoyle was excommunicated
from the New Zealand Exclusive Brethren and forced to say
goodbye to his family forever. The conservative sect was everything
he’d ever known - a childhood where television, pop music, sports and even
pets were against the rules.
Joining public society - the ‘worldlies’ - for the first time, Craig sets out to
meet his grandfather who was excommunicated in the 1980s and, using his
diaries and letters, uncovers two centuries and seven generations of the
family’s tangled and often cruel relationship with the Brethren.
Weaving their past with Craig’s own upbringing in this secretive and
oppressive religious group, Excommunicated charts the evolution of the
Exclusive Brethren in New Zealand and the heartwrenching stories of a family
torn apart.
