Post-apocalyptic novel
aims to inspire youth
• By Dylan Smits
A GOVERNORS Bay author
hopes to create climate
change awareness with her
award-winning novel set in a
future Lyttelton.
“Science is very useful in
terms of presenting the facts
and figures about climate
change, but it’s not always
very good at inspiring people
to make change,” said The
Edge of Light: New Dawning
author Melanie Dixon.
Set hundreds of years in
the future after devastating
sea level rise, Dixon’s youngadult
novel tells of a secluded
society surviving in postapocalyptic
Lyttelton.
Released in April, the novel
is the first part of a planned
trilogy.
Dixon won a Storylines
notable young fiction award
for it earlier this month.
In the novel, a young
apprentice scientist lives on
Banks Island, formerly the
Port Hills, after Christchurch
is submerged.
Christmas
appeal
to help
children
• By Dylan Smits
DO YOU want to help a kid at
Christmas? All you have to do is
fill a shoebox with presents.
Lyttelton Community House
is making an appeal to fill 50 or
more shoeboxes for kids in need
aged 2 to 16.
Thirteen shoeboxes have already
gone out to individuals and
businesses as part of the Christmas
Shoebox Project.
The community house is asking
more kind hearts to get involved.
Said community house social
worker Wendy Joy: “The filled
boxes are going directly back
into our community. It’s a great
opportunity for the community to
come together.”
Once a shoebox is acquired, the
community house asks donors to
fill them with presents appropriate
for a gender and age group,
such as girls aged 6 to 11.
Recommended presents include
essentials such as shampoo and
school supplies, and more fun
items like soft toys and games.
Those interested can pick up a
shoebox at the community house
or request one be dropped off to
them.
EXTENSIVE repairs to the
Taylors Escape Mountain
Biking Trail are set to be
completed today, ensuring
enhanced accessibility and safety
for riders.
Over the past year, volunteers
have bridged 15 large holes with
wood, laid pipes for drainage and
cleared the track of plant growth
and debris.
Said Taylors Mistake Association
member Malcolm McClurg
said: “With all the track maintenance
it should be easily ridden
all year round.”
McClurg has worked with
other local volunteers to address
developing issues since the track
opened in September last year.
He said when the track was
built it lacked bridges and drainage
to prevent holes forming in
the dirt.
“Over winter, water ran
down the track with bikes, then
formed deep ruts in the mud.
Heavy winter rain also caused
underground tunnels in the
clay to collapse under the track
with dangerous holes suddenly
appearing.”
Situated on the association’s
land, the track was initially constructed
by volunteers organised
by bach owner Mike Baddeley
and bike clothing company
Ground Effect.
McClurg said the track was
created to serve as an easier
alternative for mountain bikers
in Taylors Mistake.
“Riders do not have to bike
up the Anaconda track, which
is a fast, twisting downhill track
with the potential for dangerous
collisions with uphill riders.”
The 3km track starts at the
Taylors Mistake beach car park
and winds its way up to the
Summit Rd in Godley Head.
Trusses director Daniel Caldwell, Ground Effect track organiser Scott Emmen and Ground
It is used by a diverse group
of bikers, walkers and runners,
with McClurg estimating more
than 100 people using it on busy
weekends.
McClurg has received positive
user feedback while working on
the track.
“I get big smiles and thank
yous from riders passing me as
I am working or checking the
track, and many ask how they
could help,” he said.
Outside support for the
maintenance has come from
various sources, he said.
Businesses including VIP
Frames and Trusses and the
Ferrymead Stihl Shop have
contributed timber for the
bridges and a scrub cutter,
respectively.
McClurg said a child-friendly
loop is being planned for
construction next year, based
on community feedback.
Rubik’s Cube record
• By Dylan Smits
A RECENTLY graduated
Cashmere High School
student has broken a national
Rubik’s Cube record during a
competition in Lyttelton.
Jasper Murray, 17, completed
a 3x3x3 cube in 4.61 seconds on
Saturday, beating the previous
record by 0.4 seconds.
Said Christchurch Speedcubers
founder Mike Field: “That might
not sound like a lot, but at this
level it’s actually huge.”
Murray and 45 other competitors
gathered at the recreation
centre for Lyttelton Spring 2023,
an official World Cube Association
event.
Excited by his new record,
Murray said he did not expect to
get it.
“I was getting super tired towards
the end of the day, so I was
happy I managed it.”
Murray broke a world record
last year when he got the fastest
average of five pyraminx cube
solves.
A pyraminx is a triangle-shaped
puzzle cube.
He was the first New Zealander
to break a speedcubing world
record, averaging 1.66 seconds
for his pyraminx solves.
RECORD BREAKING:
17-year-old Jasper Murray
broke the New Zealand
Rubik’s Cube record on
Saturday.
Murray is pleased to be going
to the speedcubing nationals in
December with a new record.
“Definitely a confidence boost
for sure.”
He said practice is the most
important thing to get to a high
skill level in speedcubing.
“It pays off. You just need to
have dedication over a long period
of time.”
Field created the Lyttelton
Spring competition in 2021
with collaborator Chris Mills. It
stands out as a key fixture in
the New Zealand speedcubing
scene.
“Speedcubing is an awesome
hobby as it’s challenging and
intriguing, but also one that
gives young people access to an
incredible community of talented
people,” Field said.
Speedcubers from China,
India, the Philippines and the
United Kingdom, as well as New
Zealand participants, showcased
their skills across various categories.
These ranged from 2x2x2 to
7x7x7 cubes and even blindfolded
challenges.
In the majority of events,
competitors were ranked on
their average time of five solves,
discounting their fastest and
slowest.
The competition had a mix of
seasoned and amateur participants,
Field said.
“We love to encourage new
competitors, and actually I give
a prize for fastest newcomer at
competitions I’m involved with
to try and keep it competitive at
either end of the spectrum.”
Field said speedcubing fans
can anticipate more South Island
competitions in 2024.
ADVERTORIAL
ADVERTORIAL
Help pick a path for
Canterbury’s future
ourselves
in our
stories’
• From page 1
“There is very little in a New Zealand
setting that’s dystopian, that’s post-climate
change in speculative fiction,” said Dixon.
She hopes young New Zealanders will
connect more with a climate change story
set in a place they can relate to.
“We need these New Zealand stories for
New Zealanders. We need to see ourselves
in our stories.”
Born in Wales, Dixon moved to New
Zealand with her then husband in 2002
to find a quieter life. Her son Reuben, 19,
was born in Dunedin, where they initially
lived in a waterfront property.
“We were a little bit reluctant to move
to Christchurch till we drove over the hill
and found Governors Bay.”
The family made the move in 2005. Her
daughter Sasha, 16, was born there.
“I love the environment here. I love Governors
Bay. I love being able to watch the
sun rise out of the sea and over the hills.”
The 49-year-old author said spending
time walking and biking in the local environment
helped inspire the setting.
“It’s much easier for me to write authentically
about Lyttelton than other places in
the world,” she said.
The novel follows themes of science
versus faith and trust in authority as the
young characters work to understand the
truth behind their society.
Dixon said her story reflects the pressure
put on young people to be the drivers of
climate action.
“I think young people feel that weight
of responsibility. I wanted to write a
book that could perhaps provide a bit of
hope that there are possibilities to make
change.”
Despite always being law abiding and
cautious, the protagonist in Dixon’s story
starts to question what she can do to make
change in her world devastated by climate
change.
“I would like there to be a message that
everybody can be empowered to make
changes and that we don’t have to accept
the world as it is, particularly if we work
together,” Dixon said.
She travelled to Auckland to receive the
Storylines award on November 4.
“It feels really good. You know, obviously
it’s huge recognition. As a writer it can
quite often be quite a lonely career. It was
really motivating to finish the trilogy and
get the next two books out there.”
Readers can find out what happens
next in the second instalment of The Edge
of Light trilogy, expected to be released
next year.
Earlier this year, you told
Environment Canterbury what’s most
important to you for our natural
environment. Now we’re asking
you to rank your priorities for three
themes: water and coast, land use and
biodiversity, and climate action.
This feedback will help us develop
new climate action plans and set the
direction for regional and district plans
through the Regional Policy Statement
(RPS).
We work across Waitaha/Canterbury
to support initiatives that balance
the management of water quality
and quantity while enabling a
largely agricultural economy and the
communities it supports to thrive.
Our soils produce the food and
natural products we consume and
export, but our unique biodiversity
has seen significant losses due to
Let’s
pick a
modification of habitat, development
and the introduction of invasive pests.
We also face a range of climaterelated
risks, and careful thought needs
to go into where we focus climate
New Work – a textural delight
• By Dylan Smits
ARTISTS VICTORIA Pallin
and Lorelei Jenner are set to
captivate audiences with their
inaugural exhibition, New Work,
starting on Tuesday.
“This is a culmination of a
year’s work for us both, and we
are very excited to present our
work publicly,” Pallin said.
Pallin, of Sumner, will unveil
60 pieces of jewellery. Jenner,
of Mt Pleasant, will display 29
paintings and ceramics.
The two artists have pooled
their respective talents, hoping
to create a rich show across three
different artforms that flows
together seamlessly.
Jenner hopes viewers will
appreciate the vibrant colours,
textures and playfulness in
her work, while Pallin anticipates
visitors will enjoy the variety
within her collection of jewellery.
It is first time Pallin and
Jenner have collaborated on an
exhibition.
“We know each other very well
and share a great passion for all
types of art,” Pallin said.
The title ‘New Work’ reflects
the artists delving into new
artforms.
“New Work comes from a new
direction for me with my painting
and colour-work. Plus, I’ve
NEW DIRECTIONS: Lorelei Jenner will exhibit her paintings and ceramics alongside Victoria Pallin’s hand-forged silver
jewellery at Pumanawa Gallery from November 28.
only been working in ceramics
for two years,” Jenner said.
Pallin said all of her work
could be described as new “because
I’ve only been practicing
for three years”.
Jenner is a self-taught painter.
She has exhibited in New Zealand
and Australia over the past
two decades and earned recognition
as a finalist in the Wallace
Art Awards in 2001.
Reflecting on the technical
aspects of her art, she said, “All
of my ceramic pieces are thrown
on a wheel, not hand built. My
paintings are acrylic on board or
canvas.”
Pallin was born in Kuwait
and draws inspiration from the
region’s jewellery alongside contemporary
European styles.
She engages in intricate processes
such as sawing, texturing,
shaping and soldering and for
her jewellery.
Some of her pieces involve
the ancient Korean technique of
Keum Boo, the process of applying
24-carat gold leaf to silver
using heat.
Among the standout pieces at
the exhibition, Jenner
is proud of her ceramic
pedestal bowl
for its combination
of colours and expressive
pencil lines,
which mirrors her
turquoise and lime
painting (right).
Pallin said she is
particularly enthusiastic
about her cast silver bangles
and rings, emphasising the handforged
feel achieved through the
casting process.
Aiming to be
contemporary and
experimental, Pallin
said she favours
working with silver
to create a simple
geometric aesthetic.
New Work will
be open daily from
November 28 to
December 3 at the
Pumanawa Gallery in the Arts
Centre.
THIS BOOK
After coming out as gay, Craig Hoyle was excommunicated
from the New Zealand Exclusive Brethren and forced to say
goodbye to his family forever. The conservative sect was everything
he’d ever known - a childhood where television, pop music, sports and even
pets were against the rules.
Joining public society - the ‘worldlies’ - for the first time, Craig sets out to
meet his grandfather who was excommunicated in the 1980s and, using his
diaries and letters, uncovers two centuries and seven generations of the
family’s tangled and often cruel relationship with the Brethren.
Weaving their past with Craig’s own upbringing in this secretive and
oppressive religious group, Excommunicated charts the evolution of the
Exclusive Brethren in New Zealand and the heartwrenching stories of a family
torn apart.
The long-awaited biography of cartoonist Murray Ball, creator of Footrot
Flats.
In Murray Ball: A Cartoonist’s Life, Murray’s son Mason Ball shares all the hits
and misses and long years of hard graft that went into what would become
the wildly successful creative enterprise: Footrot Flats. From his unique
viewpoint and with candid honesty, Mason reveals the real-life backstory
to Murray’s most iconic characters and themes, telling the story of the man
- and father - who could see the quirks of human nature and capture them
with the stroke of a pen.
Richly illustrated with family photos and cartoons by the bloke who brought
us that most lovable character, the Dog.
Let me show you how my dad became a leading cartoonist of his generation,
City buildings to glow with hope
EXPECT AN orange glow over
the city later this month as Zonta
International marks its 16-day
campaign of activism opposing
violence towards women and
girls.
Christchurch’s four Zonta
Clubs are among 28 in New
Zealand which will host events
between November 25 and
December 10 to raise awareness
of gender-based violence and
fundraise for organisations that
support victims of abuse.
As part of the campaign, many
of the city’s landmark buildings
and structures will be lit up in
orange to send a clear, visible
message for a better future for
women and girls.
Among the buildings to be lit
up are the Isaac Theatre Royal,
the Christchurch Art Gallery,
the Bridge of Remembrance,
the Bowker Fountain, Vaka a
Hine artwork on Worcester
St, the Christchurch Town
Hall fountain, Cashel Mall,
New Regent St, the Fanfare
Sculpture on the Northern
Motorway, the Christchurch
Casino, the New Brighton Pier
and the Christchurch Airport
overbridge. In addition, there
will be orange influences on
structures like the planter boxes
on Victoria and Hereford Sts,
and displays in at least four city
libraries.
LIGHTS: As part of the ‘Zonta says no to violence against women’ campaign, buildings in the city have previously been lit
up in orange.
Christchurch South Zonta
Club advocacy chair Catherine
Goodwin said the New Zealand
domestic violence statistics make
for troubling reading.
“Good Shepherd New Zealand
research suggests one in three
New Zealand women have
experienced physical or sexual
intimate partner violence in their
lifetime,” she said.
“When psychological abuse is
added (where economic harm
sits), this increases to one in two.
“Internationally, up to 50
per cent of sexual assaults are
committed against girls under
16 years of age. Just imagine if
this was your daughter, your
granddaughter or your sister.”
Goodwin said the colour
orange symbolises a brighter
future, free of violence
and gender-based control,
particularly for women and
girls, and is a powerful display
of hope.
“It is also a clear message that,
as a society, we do not condone
abuse.”
The lighting up of buildings
worldwide by Zonta International
began in 2012 to mark the organisation’s
16 days of awareness
against gender-based violence.
“We hope that this campaign
shows victims that living with
abuse, in any form, is unacceptable
and that there are people
and organisations within our
community that care for their
well-being and are there to support
them,” said Goodwin.
The campaign launch is open
to the public and will be held at
Christchurch Art Gallery from
6-8pm on November 23.
“This will be a wonderful
networking event in the iconic
art gallery foyer, with speakers
talking briefly on the different
perspectives addressing this
challenging societal issue,”
Goodwin said.
Tickets are $40 and available
for purchase on Eventbrite.
Start a new
Christmas tradition
What could be better than starting some new family traditions this year? Christmas traditions are memories
in the making and help spread a little festive cheer whether with your loved ones or out in the community.
10 great ideas to help make Christmas a magical time of the year
1. Create a Christmas playlist with some of
your favourite carols and songs – play it
loud and every day, if that’s your thing.
Or plan a pre-Christmas sing-along
evening – don’t forget to supply the song
sheet so everyone can join in too.
2. Get into the spirit of Christmas by getting
together with family or friends to help
decorate each other’s houses – turn up
the music, drink the wine and go all out
to deck the halls.
3. Make and send homemade Christmas
cards – there’s nothing more exciting
than getting mail, right? Or how about
writing some generic ones and dropping
them into your nearest retirement
home to brighten up an elderly person’s
Christmas.
4. Buy your family Christmas tee-shirts or
Santa hats to wear on the day and don’t
forget to take a family selfie.
5. Fill a shoebox with gifts for a child, wrap
it with a bow, and deliver to the nearest
community gift tree – check with your
local library and label with age and
gender.
6. Have a yearly family, friends or neighbour
outdoor games night with drinks and
nibbles leading up to the big day – think
Pétanque, hoopla, mini golf, giant chess,
or croquet.
7. Take a leaf out of Iceland’s traditional
‘Jolabokaflod’ or Christmas Book Flood,
and give a book as a gift on Christmas
Eve each year – don’t forget to write
inside the cover who it’s from and the
date.
8. Make a list of must see Christmas movies
to watch a week before Christmas day
and tick off the ones you’ve watched.
Don’t forget the popcorn and hot
chocolate or nibbles and wine.
9. Make and give a handmade ornament
as a gift each year – the lucky receiver’s
Christmas tree will be covered with
beautiful, handmade memories.
10. Make homemade hot chocolate on
Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning
to drink while the presents are being
opened – decorate with whipped cream,
grated chocolate, marshmallows, or
crushed candy canes.
Blind runner completes NYC marathon
• By Daniel Alvey
A BLIND runner has completed
the world’s biggest marathon.
Blair McConnell was born
with retinitis pigmentosa, a
genetic eye disease that causes
cells in the retina to break down
slowly over time, resulting in
progressive vision loss.
But the 58-year-old didn’t let
that stop him
completing the
42km New York
City Marathon
in 5hr 52min
1sec.
“It was an
absolutely
Blair
McConnell
incredible
experience,”
McConnell said.
“When you are running with
51,000 people and supporters
(spectators) up to 2.5 million . . .
it still gives me shivers.”
He travelled to the Big Apple
as one of seven athletes with
Achilles International New
Zealand.
Achilles aims to provide people
with disabilities the opportunity
to participate in mainstream
athletics, and matches them with
volunteer guides.
McConnell started his running
journey about five years ago and
had planned to do the marathon
in 2020, but it was cancelled due
to the pandemic.
The New York City Marathon
is the first full marathon he has
completed, having done a number
of half-marathons.
McConnell said the emotion
did not set in straight after he
crossed the finish line.
“It took a little while before the
emotion of it actually feeling like
I’ve achieved what I set out to do
to kick in.
“I’m just really happy to finish
something I started many
years ago.”
The Prebbleton resident ran
with two guides, Anton McLean
from Christchurch and Mike
Lane-Holbert from Florida. His
other regular guide Noel
Whiteside was unable to make
the trip.
The course traverses the city
starting in Staten Island, heading
through Brooklyn, Queens, and
the Bronx, finishing in Central
Park.
McConnell said the crowd
was overwhelming, with quiet
sections as he would cross the
bridges between islands.
“You’d get over the crest of a
bridge and here a roar in front of
ON YOUR MARKS: Blair McConnell (middle) ran with two
guides – Anton McLean (left) from Christchurch and Mike
Lane-Holbert from Florida. Above – McConnell with fellow
vision-impaired runner Mike Asmussen, from Christchurch.
the crowd.
“It was like running into a
stadium at several points of the
marathon.
“It was overwhelming.”
More than
51,000 people
marathon.
Preparing for a Happy Holiday Season at Kōwhai Vet
The holiday season is fast approaching, and
as we prepare to celebrate with our loved
ones, it’s essential not to forget our furry family
members. At Kōwhai Vet Clinic, we want to
ensure that your pets are in the best possible
health and spirits during the upcoming
festivities. Here are a few key things to keep
in mind as we head into the holiday season.
Check your pet’s vaccination records
Before you embark on your holiday travels and
your pets check into the boarding kennels or
cattery, be sure to check their vaccinations are
up to date. This not only ensures the safety
and well-being of your furry friends during
their stay, but also eliminates the last-minute
stress of being turned away from the kennels
because their vaccinations are overdue. Our
experienced veterinarians are here to guide
you on the specific vaccinations your pet may
need based on their individual requirements.
Preparing for a comfortable journey
If your holiday plans involve travel, it’s
essential to prepare your pets for the journey.
Consider bringing their travel cage into your
living space a week or so before departure,
creating a cosy bed inside and leaving
some treats to entice them. This gradual
introduction allows your pets to become
accustomed to the carrier in a familiar and
safe environment. For those taking to the
skies, ensure that your pet’s carrier meets
the correct size and specifications for plane
travel. Planning ahead and familiarising your
pets with their travel arrangements minimises
stress for both you and your furry companions.
Anxiety-Free Travel
If your pet tends to get anxious when on
the move there are a number of options for
reducing their anxiety to make the trip go more
smoothly for them. Using a pheromone spray
such as Feliway for cats or Adaptil for dogs, can
make them feel more settled in their carrier, or
on their bed in the car. While we cannot sedate
animals for travel, we can provide medications
to help reduce stress and anxiety, keeping
them much calmer for the journey. Like us,
some pets can also experience travel-sickness,
so medications to reduce nausea can also
be of benefit. Consult with our veterinarians
to discuss the best options for your pet’s
individual needs.
Health Check
If you’ve had any concerns about your pet’s
health, consider having them checked out
before heading away for the holidays so
that a minor issue doesn’t progress to a
bigger problem. If your pet is on long term
prescription medications, you may want to
ensure that you have enough medication on
hand to last you through the holidays and
your time away. If your pet has not seen a vet
recently they may require a health check prior
to dispensing more medication, so ensure you
leave plenty of time to fit this into your busy
schedule.
Microchip Details
Ensure all your contact details registered to
your pets microchip are up to date. If they go
missing whilst you’re away, you want to make
sure they can be returned to you as quickly as
possible.
A Special Treat for Your Furry Friends
The holiday season is a time of joy, but it can
also be a time of stress for pets. Changes in
routine, visitors, and new surroundings can
sometimes be overwhelming for them.
Creating a safe space where they can escape
the festive chaos can give them a sense of
security, and providing enrichment toys can
help ease their anxiety and provide muchneeded
mental stimulation.
At Kōwhai Vet Clinic, we have a delightful
selection of enrichment toys and treats in
stock to make your pets feel cherished during
the festive season.
From interactive toys to scrumptious treats,
we have everything you need to put a smile on
your pet’s face and keep them engaged and
happy throughout the holiday season.
Don’t wait until the last minute! Schedule
your pet’s vaccinations and health check
today to guarantee a stress-free and joyful
holiday season.
And don’t forget to drop by our clinic to
explore our selection of fantastic enrichment
toys and treats for your pets. After all, they
deserve a special Christmas gift too!
Mission Without Borders
visit the Sechka’s house
with support to lift them
out of poverty.
Families in Ukraine
need your help!
The Sechka family live in a rural area
of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in
an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo,
40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to
provide for their family. They face a massive
challenge as three of their five children have
severe disabilities. One of their daughters
is unable to walk at all. The health of
their children means they need medical
examinations, check-ups, and treatment.
Which costs money.
Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but
when the war began, he lost most of his
wages then he had to quit. Since then, he
has focused on farming and keeps cows,
pigs, geese, and poultry to survive.
Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they
are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate
a lot of land to grow forage for the animals,
and vegetables and grain for the family. He
was using an old tractor that he bought 15
years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and
required constant repair. Mykhailo says that
after each working day he had to repair it
and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then,
the old tractor became a place where Mieko
and his siblings play.
Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts,
the family’s situation became very difficult.
The loss of income, health issues and the
ongoing war has taken its toll.
Mieko’s family need help with resources,
such as tools and machinery, so they can
grow food for themselves.
Right now, the Ukrainian economy
is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So,
supporting families just like Mieko’s with a
self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline.
Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have
resulted in physical and psychological
issues. There is no doubt that the impact
of war will be felt by his family and many
others for years to come.
Support MiSSion Without BorderS
At Mission Without Borders, we regularly reach
out to Kiwis who respond by giving, praying,
and offering their unwavering support.
If you would like to help, here are
some ways we can make a difference
together:
1. A gift of $30 will supply an emergency
food and hygiene parcel to help
displaced and vulnerable people in the
Ukraine.
2. Sponsor a family: we have families
in Ukraine waiting right now for
sponsorship. You can enable and
encourage a whole family to lift
themselves out of poverty and become
self-sufficient for $45 a month.
3. Consider donating towards a selfsufficiency
project for a family like
Mieko’s. This will give them the
opportunity to not only survive but
thrive ‒ $25 will provide a packet of
seeds to grow life-sustaining fruits
and vegetables.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST 23
City of Norwich Lodge friendly society
BEFORE government assistance
for health, accident and
unemployment existed, many
people formed nonprofit friendly
societies to assist each other in
times of need.
Ōhinehou Lyttelton’s first
friendly society lodge had its
roots in Manchester, England. A
few days before Christmas 1851,
a group of 13 men formed the
Loyal City of Norwich Lodge No
4356 of the Manchester Unity Independent
Order of Oddfellows
(MUIOOF).
As the City of Norwich Lodge
grew, it spent £85 in 1855 on a
section in St Davids St with a
small building used for meetings.
Outgrowing that hall, member
Edward Morey was awarded the
£245 contract to replace it.
In 1876 the lodge moved to its
Winchester St site opposite St
John’s Presbyterian Church. A
spacious building, it provided
a top hall for functions, balls,
meetings and shows for many
groups in port. Downstairs was
a supper room and accommodation
for a caretaker.
At the time of the lodge’s
75th anniversary in 1925, funds
had accumulated to a sizeable
£16,560, 18 shillings and 6 pence
(equivalent to over $2 million
today), not including significant
monies already contributed to
sick pay, funeral donations and
relief funds. Donations were also
made to Lyttelton organisations
such as Plunket and St Johns,
which helped fund the first ambulance
in Lyttelton.
Funeral and sickness benefits,
subsidised medical care, widow
and orphan funds, and member-owned
chemist shops made
lodges popular with families.
Oddfellows, Hibernians,
Druids and Foresters lodges
would often join together and
provide a United Friendly
Societies Dispensary. Lyttelton’s
UFS Dispensary, built in 1875
Members of Oddfellows Lodge, 1900-1950, Te Ūaka The Lyttelton Museum ref 8300.1
https://www.teuaka.org.nz/online-collection/1128476
on the site of the Queen’s Hotel
(which was burnt down in the
1870 ‘Great Fire’), was situated
on what is currently an empty
section on the corner of London
and Oxford streets.
Many Oddfellows enjoyed socialising.
Picnics, balls, dinners,
card evenings, church parades,
debates, musical evenings,
Christmas parties, quoits, swimming
carnivals and shooting
matches were popular.
Frequently, Christchurch
lodges arrived by train for social
evenings and Lyttelton members
also often travelled away. A visit
to Loyal Wairewa Lodge in Little
River was always a late night – in
1936, 124 members boarded the
train from Lyttelton, changed
at Christchurch and arrived in
Little River at 7.50pm. The return
trip left at midnight, arriving
back in Lyttelton at 1.30am. The
Lyttelton Oddfellows also shared
social functions with the port’s
Foresters and Buffalo lodges.
City of Norwich Lodge met
every second Tuesday, with the
hall used by the Manchester
Unity Kaia Toa Ladies Lodge
(formed 1925) and the Juvenile
Lodge (formed 1880) on Monday
nights. Meetings were extremely
formal for the first part of the
evening, with the format being
the same in all Manchester Unity
lodges. Members wore a sash or
collar and the presiding chairman,
the Noble Grand, was seated
at the front of the hall with his
supporters on either side. Facing
him was the Vice Grand seated
inside the hall’s main door with
his supporters. Other officers
such as the secretary, past noble
grand, conductors and guardian
had their designated places. Order
of business followed a strict
ritual and some lodges competed
against each other in ritual
competition events. Positions of
responsibility changed frequently
to give younger members experience
in meeting procedure.
At the completion of business,
social events took place, often
until the early hours. Apart from
toasts at formal dinners, most
events were alcohol free.
As friendly societies became
increasingly popular, more
Manchester Unity lodges were
opened on Banks Peninsula –
Akaroa’s Good Intent (1858),
Okains Bay’s Hand of Friendship
(1875), Pigeon Bay’s Hand and
Heart (1876), Little Akaloa’s
Hand in Hand (1878), Little River’s
Dawn of Hope (1878), Barry’s
Bay’s Perseverance (1881) and
Little River’s Wairewa (1897).
The Akaroa lodge Good Intent
demonstrated the financial support
available with the building
of its large hall, now the Gaiety
Theatre.
After WW2, people became
less dependent on lodge benefits
as government welfare increased.
Membership declined and rural
lodges amalgamated or closed –
Lyttelton members affiliated to the
Banks Peninsula Lodge in 1996.
In 2004, a new Friendly
Societies lodge building, built
by volunteer labour from Oddfellows,
Hibernians, Druids and
Foresters Lodges, was opened
in Ferrymead Heritage Park. It
houses some of the furniture,
records and pictures of the Lyttelton
lodges.
As for the large City of
Norwich Lodge hall in
Winchester St, it was sold and
later destroyed by fire in October
1961 while owned by Lichfield
Shirt Factory. Meanwhile, the
Oddfellow values of friendship,
love and truth continue – a
rebranded Manchester Unity
lodge still focuses on families
with subsidised holiday
accommodation, education
scholarships and sponsorship of
local events.
OFFICIALLY OPENS BOXING DAY!
One Life" is a must-see film, illustrating the courage of
Sir Nicholas Winton, a banker who saved 600 children
from Nazi terror on the brink of World War II. Set against
a fearful Prague backdrop, it's a stirring narrative of hope
and altruism. The portrayal of an unsung hero making a
monumental difference against dire odds makes "One
Life" an inspiring cinematic experience not to be missed.
