Y ou can take the boy out of South Africa, but you will never take South Africa out of the boy. The Rainbow Nation runs right through Dane Vilas. Of course it does, for that will always be home. But one thing you can be sure of, the red flash in that rainbow will shine brightest within the popular wicketkeeper-batter, who will never ever forget his seven seasons at Lancashire. “I would call it my second home away from South Africa, and I’ve loved it here,” said Vilas as he prepared to farewell Emirates Old Trafford last month. “It’s had a fantastic impact on me and my family. “Every single person I’ve interacted with has been incredible, be it in the Hilton hotel, which was my home, to this side of the ground. I love all the people here. It’s been an absolute privilege from the start to play here. It’s been an incredible experience.” Vilas first arrived at Lancashire ahead of the 2017 summer as one of two Kolpak signings. The fact he more than matched the contributions of the other one indicates his success. That was West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Four of those seasons were spent as captain - from 2019 to 2022. There were a number of strong challenges for trophies, but ultimately all near misses. The trio of second-placed finishes in 2022 was the best example. “In my time here, I think it’s three seconds we’ve had in the County Championship, coming so close,” he reflected. “I will never forget that day at Liverpool in 2021 when we’d won it (against Hampshire), we were top and then the next day we lost it to Warwickshire. “The Finals Days we’ve been involved in, Hampshire coming down to the last ball last year - we won it and then lost it. That was really tough. “I don’t look back on them with regret. I don’t have any of those leaving here. But they are disappointments. I feel like some of the performances we’ve put in over the years, I think as a team we definitely deserved to win at least one trophy. “I’ve always said to the guys in the changing room, ‘I think we’re so close to a tipping point’. Once we get over the line in one and get that winning feeling, I think hopefully the floodgates AUTUMN 2023 SPIN 27
