Residents
caught
off guard
by fines

PEOPLE ACROSS the district
have been hit with parking
fines as the council ramps up
enforcement.
Since September the council
has issued 493 infringement notices
across the whole district.
The council started monitoring
parking in October 2022, but
until September this year did not
have a dedicated staff member
focused on parking.
In the first six months from
October 2022 to April, the
council issued 100 infringement
notices, adopting the educationfirst
approach, mostly giving out
warnings initially.
A Leeston resident told Selwyn
Times he got a parking ticket for
his campervan sticking out over
part of the footpath.
He said this was the first time
in six and a half years he had
been told he was doing something
wrong.
“The only thing that upset me
was how they went about doing
it,” he said.
The resident said he would
have liked to have seen a warning
given first, rather than the $40
fine.

Senior council manager resigns

THE COUNCIL has lost a member of
its senior leadership team.
Enabling services group manager
Kelvin Mason resigned earlier this
month.
In his role he oversaw a range of
departments, including financial
management, legal, human resources,
and programme and performance
management.
Council chief executive Sharon
Mason (not related) would not
comment on why he left, stating it was
a “private matter”.
He left the job two days after he
handed in his resignation.
“Kelvin gave his resignation on
November 8 and requested to take
some time off to recharge after a busy
three years here at the council. We

significantly elevated nitrate
levels.
An interactive map that enables
people to monitor nitrate
levels in their drinking water was
launched on Monday.
Greenpeace Aotearoa’s Know
Your Nitrate map allows users to
search for information on local
levels.
Greenpeace has been undertaking
free nitrate testing for two
years, which has allowed the organisation
to create a dataset that
shows nitrate levels in household
bore water supplies.
According to Otago University
scientists, 800,000 New Zealanders
are at risk of drinking
hazardous levels of nitrates.
In Selwyn, two areas have high
enough nitrate levels to make
drinking groundwater unsafe.
The banks of the Rakaia River
near Southbridge have a nitrate
level of 13.82mg/l, while part of
Saunders Rd near Hororata has a
level of 12.6mg/l.
The data underlying the
Greenpeace map is mostly selfsupply
bore users in rural areas
at risk of high nitrate exposure,
but it also shows a number of
substantial public water supplies
exceeding health risk limits.
Rolleston’s main water supply
has a nitrate level of 3.15mg/l,
higher than the mean of public
supplies of 2.52 mg/l.
Greenpeace Aotearoa executive
director Russel Norman said the
map was designed to inform and
warn the public of the potential
health risks of nitrate in drinking
water.
“Nitrate has no odour, taste or
colour and is the most pervasive
water contaminant in New Zealand,”
he said in a statement.

were the most likely to be unaware
of their exposure to hazardous
levels of nitrate, he said.
“Many rural New Zealand
families in high-risk areas are
drinking water from their kitchen
taps without knowing whether it
is contaminated with nitrates or
how high those contamination
levels are. Unless they pay to get
it tested themselves, they have no
way to know.”
People using bore water should
get it tested because a direct test
of tap water was the only way
of truly find out your potential
nitrate exposure, Norman said.
In addition to data already
available, Greenpeace had done
testing itself, Norman told Morning
Report.
“So there’s over 1200 tests that
we’ve added . . . to the existing
data and brought it all together
in one place.”
He said the public health risk
of nitrates was an “emerging area
of science”.
“There are some very large
studies which show that you can
get colorectal cancer, there can
be impacts if you are pregnant in
terms of pre-term and low birth
weight at much lower than the
. . . World Health Organisationset
standards we have.”
Norman said the largest
sources of nitrate contamination
in New Zealand were cow urine
and synthetic nitrogen fertiliser.
Greenpeace was calling on all
political parties to cut the use of
synthetic nitrogen fertiliser and
lower dairy cow stocking rates in
order to protect drinking water
from nitrate contamination, he
said.

Entrepreneur pays grandma’s $3k

AN ENTREPRENEUR has paid
the majority of a near-$4000
fine a grandmother faced for
a chicken sandwich she forgot
she had in her backpack when
arriving in Australia to visit
family.

Armstrong spoke with the NZ
Herald on Tuesday last week
about her ordeal when she
arrived at Brisbane Airport with
a sealed chicken sandwich in
her backpack she purchased at
Christchurch Airport.
Following the article, a New
Zealand entrepreneur, who
wished to remain anonymous,
contacted the Herald and said he
wanted to cover June’s fine.
In a message to June, the man
said he had read the Herald’s
story and was “shocked”. He
asked for her bank account
number and said he would send
her the money for the fine –
$3300.
“No one should have to go
through that stress for no reason.
Happy to help take that off you.”
June replied thanking the man
for the “wonderful gesture”.
She was in tears when she
spoke with the Herald and said
she was “overwhelmed”.
“I never did it to get the money
back, the money was gone and

there was nothing I could do
about it, but it was just eating
me up. I just felt it was unfair
and that other people should be
warned.
“I’m absolutely dumbfounded
. . . I can’t believe people are that
kind.”
She said the generosity made
her “believe in people again”.
“I just cannot believe that
someone would do that for a
stranger.
“He must be the nicest man.”
The entrepreneur was not the
only anonymous benefactor,
however, with another man
stepping forward upon hearing
she had further fees incurred,
and offered June a further $1000.
June arrived at Christchurch
Airport on May 2 about 4am
for an early morning flight to
Brisbane to spend three months
house-sitting and visiting family.
The 77-year-old was supposed
to fly with her husband a few
days earlier but changed her
flight after she made her first
bowls final.
When she got to the airport,
she bought a muffin and a
gluten-free chicken and lettuce
sandwich, which was sealed.
“I sat down and ate some of my
muffin and I really didn’t feel like
it so I threw the rest away, but
I put the sandwich in my small
backpack,” she said.
“I just clearly forgot. I am
very forgetful, but not forgetful
enough to be diagnosed with
dementia.”
June, who initially intended to
eat the sandwich on the plane,
fell asleep once on board. She
then filled out a declaration
form and said she had some
prescription medication.
Once in Australia, she went
through border patrol, where
her suitcase and backpack were
checked.
As the official went through
her backpack, he found the
chicken sandwich.
“I said, ‘Oh, I forgot about that,
I’m sorry. Could you throw it
away for me?’. He just kept going
through my bag.”
June then emptied her bag on
the table while the man went
away. While she waited, a couple
she saw in Christchurch walked
past.
“I said, ‘Oh, I might be on TV’,
never thinking anything was
wrong.”

A short while later the man
returned and said, “Twelve
points, 3300”.
“I said, ‘What does that mean?’
and he said, ‘Twelve points,
$3300’.”
June asked if he was joking.
Once she realised he was not, she
began crying.
“I was just sobbing and said
‘$3300 for a little sandwich?’”
Another staffer went over and
offered her some water and a
chair to sit on.
A short while later, June called
her husband, who was waiting
to pick her up. She began telling
him what had happened when
her phone was taken off her, and
the staffer told her husband she
would be out shortly.
Another staffer informed her
she could appeal the fine and
“strongly advised” she did.
June said she tried to appeal
within the 28-day payment
period, only to get automatic
replies.
“My husband kept saying, ‘Just
pay it’. I said, ‘It’s our pension, we
can’t afford this’.”
June paid the fine before the
deadline, incurring a fee of
$3700.
After paying, she sent
another email asking why she
was fined when it was her first
infringement, why the fine was
so high, and mentioning that the
sandwich was sealed.
She also sent an email one
month later to say the fine was
having a significant impact on
her life.
“I think of it night and day, I
now am on sleeping tablets,” she
wrote.
“I am consumed by how much
this fine was and how much it
will affect our lives.”
June said she and her husband,
who have been married for 47
years, had about $30,000 in
savings as well as their pensions.
“That’s all we have. Everything
we’ve got is freehold. I never buy
anything that we can’t have.
“We’ve worked bloody hard all
our life for what we’ve got . . . we
live from week to week.”
The couple had considered
selling their caravan, as well
as giving up bowls which costs
about $220 a year.
“He’s persuaded me not to, it’s
the only thing we do. It’s the only
entertainment we have and we do
it quite a few days a week.”
A spokeswoman for Australia’s
Department of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Forestry said June
would have needed an import
permit to bring the chicken
sandwich into the country.
“Meat has strict import
conditions which can change
quickly based on disease
outbreaks,” the spokeswoman
said.
“Uncanned meats, including
vacuum-sealed items, are not
allowed into Australia unless
accompanied by an import
permit.”
June didn’t declare the
sandwich, having forgotten it,
but did declare the prescription
medication she was carrying.
“Where travellers fail to declare
risk items,” the department
spokeswoman said, “they may be
given an infringement notice, up
to AU$6260 ($6790).
“All food products must be
declared on arrival and may be
inspected to ensure they comply
with import conditions. Items
that do not meet these conditions
are not permitted into Australia.”
The department spokeswoman
pointed to biosecurity
announcements on flights
which told travellers what their
declaration obligations were, as
well as signage about it around
arrivals areas in Australian
airports.
June has now fully paid off the
fine, thanks to the anonymous
benefactors’ donations, and
thanked everyone for their
support with the story making
the headlines across the world.

Shane Epiha said he has received
a lot of messages about fines.
“It seems people have been
caught off guard by the adjustment,”
Epiha said.
Council head of regulatory
Susan Atherton said the change
had been driven by residents’
concerns.
“Due to the volume of requests
we are receiving from residents,
we added an additional staff
member in the regulatory team in
September to assist with responding
to residents’ requests around
parking safety.”
Between August last year and
the end of July this year, the
council compliance team received
a total of 1464 complaints of
which 844 were vehicle-related
complaints, including parking
issues.
A number of other residents
also reported receiving fines
on the Leeston Southbridge
Ellesmere and Rolleston
community Facebook pages,
mostly for parking on the berm.

Boy racers wreak havoc,
caught on camera

RESIDENTS IN a quiet street
are fed up with boy racers using
a reserve as their personal
playground.
A man who lives in Liffeyfields
Dr, Lincoln, told Selwyn Times
cars had been doing skids on the
reserve at least three times in the
last month.
Last Monday the resident was
putting out his bins at about
10pm when he saw two cars in
Duncan Reserve doing skids.
Thinking quickly, he pulled
out his phone and started filming
them. Shortly after he pressed
record, the two cars sped up the
bank and back onto Liffeyfields
Dr, speeding off into the night.
“The theory being in the world
of idiots that race around in cars
at night, it probably got a bit of a
reputation of a place to play,” the
resident said. “It’s our ratepayers’
money that is used to fix it up.”
The resident said he reported
the vehicles to police via the 105
number, and was told police in
the area would be on the lookout.
A police spokesperson said
they have been unable to locate
either of the vehicles.
The resident now wants the

through Leeston, with a halfway
break at Killinchy. They finished

McIntyre said it is all about
removing the stigma and the
“she’ll be right” attitude.
“There was a lot of good
conversations had about mental
health . . . and raising awareness
about Movember,” McIntyre
said.
So far, the pair have raised a
total of $6614 for Movember.

Cowboys in Canty: Bringing

A MOCK western film made by
high school students that went
global in the 1980s is ready for a
relaunch.
Lincoln County Incident is a
western set in the US state of
New Mexico in 1881, starring
students and staff from Lincoln
High School.
The film was written and
directed by then head of art Tony
Brittenden and was filmed by
his brother Rob, with about 100
students and staff involved in its
filming.
The film featured at the
Cannes MipTV Festival in
France in 1980 after it was picked
up by the New Zealand Film
Commission.
“They took it to Cannes and it
immediately sold to three countries
and over the next two years it
sold to about 18,” Brittenden said.
The film made a gross profit
of about $80,000, which was just
enough to break even.
In the 47-minute film, Samson
Peabody-Jones, played by Shane
Simms, set out to conquer the
untamed west in 1881.

Jones’ escapades as he braves the
frontier in search of adventure
and finds a life of danger and a

drama and I auditioned and got

lead actress,” she said.

VHS, but doesn’t own a player.
After leaving school, van der
Klei went on to sing as part of
Brittenden’s bluegrass band in a
range of bars.
“Tony is such great guy, so
funny,” she said.
Now the movie is in the process
of being converted from 16mm
film to a digital version by Park
Road Post, a Wellington-based
studio owned by Sir Peter Jackson.
Brittenden said he had been
thinking about digitising the film
for several years.
As the head of arts at Lincoln
High, Brittenden was in charge
of directing the school shows and
thought it would be a good idea in
1974 to make a movie.
“The movie grew to the extent
that we forgot about doing the
concert that year and just stuck
with the movie.”
Brittenden said filming took
about a year, but it then took
another five years to be completed,
with all the audio and sound effects
having to be added afterwards.
Many of the outdoor scenes
were shot at Castle Hill, but the
saloon itself was a bit closer to
home. The school assembly hall
was repurposed as the film’s set,
becoming a fully-fledged saloon,
meaning assemblies had to be
held elsewhere during the year of
filming.

with posters, replica guns and
other memorabilia.
He has been a fan of the genre
since he was young.
“In those days there was no
Marvel, there was some Disney, but
it all was pretty much westerns,”
he said.
Through the years he has built
up his collection, and once he
retired from St Andrews College
in 2018, he started building out
the downstairs room.
“It’s finished now because I’ve
run out of space,” he joked.
Of all the westerns he has seen,
Brittenden could whittle his
favourites down to two American
films: Dance With Wolves, a 1990
film that tells the story of Union
Army Lieutenant John J. Dunbar,
and The Last of the Mohicans,
shot in 1992 and set in 1757
during the French and Indian
War.
Both films star his favourite
actor Wes Studi.

Potential
upgrades
outlined for
Leeston Park

LEESTON PARK could receive a
$9 million upgrade as part of the
next Long-Term Plan.
Alongside the new community
centre and library, the council has
voted to include four options for
the park in the 2024-34 LTP.
The first option was to do nothing
apart from the required safety
upgrades. Option two was to
make a low-level enhancement to
the park with LTP-funded items
only, offering limited or partial
improvements to key features
such as toilets, parking and the
sports field at a cost of $2,391,080.
Option three was to make essential
improvements to the park
in line with specific items from
the master plan, including a fully
upgraded and extended sports
field at the Carrodus site with
irrigation and lighting, enhanced
carpark works, and improved
infrastructure at a total cost of
$6,232,943.
The final option is to complete
the full master plan which
includes extensively upgrading the
playground area and footpaths,
with additional park furniture,
signage, and landscaping
throughout at a cost of $9,493,930.

LEESTON IS ONE step closer
to getting a new community
centre and library.
It will now be up to the community
to decide which option it
wants.
Councillors were presented
with seven options for the new
facility, Whata Rau, with two
recommended by staff to go into
the 2024-34 Long-Term Plan.
After debating the use, size,
and cost to ratepayers, councillors
decided to put four options
forward.
Option one was to keep the
existing library and have no new
community space. Option two
was the construction of a new
building at Leeston Park with
the possibility of an increased
community space. Option three
was the same new building
with an extended sports space,
while option four was to use a
standardised design that would
be cheaper to build but offer less
cultural significance.

would support the new facility
with the addition of an increased
community space; option two.
“New public facilities need to
cater for expected growth in the
district over the next 50 years of
development.
“There are 38 houses under
construction in the Leeston
township . . . and pre-sold
consented subdivision sections
will result in up to 70 more over
the next 12 months,” Thompson
said.
As part of the 2021-31 LTP the
council committed to delivering
a 900 sq m building and allocated
a budget of $9.19 million.
But that cost has now increased
by about $7 million
with the current concept design
expected to cost $16,016,092, at a
cost of $65 per year to ratepayers.
Council has yet to do any detailed
design beyond a concept,
meaning the project has a contingency
budget to compensate
for the uncertainty.

repairs to remain
in use.

Re. Mayor Sam’s comments (Mayor
Sam’s News, Selwyn Times, November
15). We note that he is “delighted” to
welcome the first of two un-elected people
to the council. These, according to Sam,
will take part in all council meetings and
committees. They will have speaking and
voting rights. By what democratic system
has this been allowed to happen?
I am sure us residents will not be
“delighted” when people who have access
to information not available to the general
populace could have deciding votes on
important issues. Would it not be more
democratic to have these people stand
for council and have to answer questions
like any other candidate? What other
agreements has our “delighted” Mayor
signed?

appropriate skills and qualifications
to decision making bodies is common
practice for councils across Aotearoa, and
something our council has been doing
with great success for many years.
Fireworks
I, as well as a lot of other New
Zealanders, have been concerned and
worried for a long, long time as to the
reason why the Government has not
stepped up and done anything about the
sales of fireworks to the general public.
We all know that fireworks in the wrong
hands are extremely dangerous to people
and animals and cause lots of injuries to
both, which of course leads to enormous
amounts of money being paid out by ACC,
money which could be put to better use.
Then there is the damage to property etc.
Have organised displays by all means,
but stop the idiots with too much cash,
and no thought for what damage or injury
is caused by these dangerous fireworks to
create havoc not just on important days
like celebrating Guy Fawkes or Halloween
or any other in the year that they pick to
be able to purchase such things.
I write this with very little hope that the
people who could change the law and ban
public sale of fireworks will do anything
at all.

Fireworks should be banned. The risk
to people, property and animals is awful.
Traumatised animals every time. I am sure
the fireworks are louder than they used to
be and people can’t even make sure their
animals are inside as the fireworks are
going off before and after the day. Get rid.

For many years I have believed that
there is a place in New Zealand for public
fireworks displays only.
My dog believed people were shooting at
her. When we lived in Rolleston, fireworks
were a random occurrence for months
after they were for sale. As responsible dog
owners, we were unable to predict when
we would need to keep her inside to prevent
the extreme distress she experienced
whenever we heard fireworks.
A friend also had her horse entangled in
a fence due to panic as neighbours of her
leased paddock exercised their rights to
let off fireworks in early December – over
$1500 in vet bills. Nice eh.
The time has come to ban the sale of
fireworks to the public.

The weather held for the 148th Courtenay A&P Show on Saturday. Participants and
competitors’ efforts made for some spectacular displays at the Kirwee Showground,
with the Ellesmere Pipe Band leading the grand parade. Craft and trade sites had a
bumper year and the kids were thoroughly entertained with face painting, games,
bikes and rides. The Courtenay A&P Association thanks the community, sponsors and
its committee for their support, and looks forward to its upcoming 150th.

Motoring fun had by all at festival
Selwyn Motorfest had its biggest turnout yet. The
vehicle show had more than 700 vehicles of all
makes, models and eras on display. Sunday bloomed
with blue skies and sunshine, and the notorious
Rolleston winds stayed away. Along with the vehicles,
there were more than 30 market stalls. The children’s
area was a massive hit with bouncy castles, balloons
and the McLenaghan excavator for them to have a
go on. There were still kids playing well after the 3pm
closing time.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO FUN: The free family fun zone was organised by Rolleston Rotary
Club and offered kids the chance to join in the motoring excitement with ride-on cars.

interactive forum to share their insights on how we can continue to shape a strong
Selwyn economy.
Discussions and emerging themes highlight a shared vision for Selwyn that's not
only economically prosperous, but also sustainable, environmentally conscious,
socially vibrant, and future-focused.
The forum signalled the start of a journey and kickstarted engagement around the
Council’s Economic Development Strategy. Chief Executive Officer Sharon Mason
said, “over the coming months, we will be inviting continued conversations with
local businesses and key partners, building on the momentum from the forum”.
“This forum is the first step in partnering with local businesses on our strategy,
and its success opens the door to more opportunities as we work towards a more
vibrant and prosperous Selwyn”.

Celebrating 20 Years of Friendship
with Yubetsu
The Malvern Community Board, with support from the Selwyn Sister Cities
Committee, were delighted to host a delegation from Yubetsu, their Japanese
Sister City, to mark two decades of friendship.
Yubetsu, a region on the northern coast of Hokkaido, is a major fishing port
but shares many similarities with the Malvern area, known for intensive
cropping and dairy farming.
Yubetsu Mayor Mr Karita led the delegation, with Council Chairperson
Mr Murata, Sister City Committee Chair Mrs Uchino and Council officer
Mr Nakagawa.
The four-day visit explored different aspects of the Selwyn community,
including a day in the Lake Coleridge and Hororātā areas, visiting dairy and
sheep-milking farms and watching the traditional sheep-shearing.
The delegation also visited the Council Rolleston offices and Te Ara Ātea.
Mr Bruce Russell, Acting Chair of the Malvern Community Board provided a
garden visit to his home in West Melton.
The delayed twenty-year visit was marked by a tree-planting ceremony in
Tussock Square in Darfield, followed by a formal welcome at the Darfield
Service Centre and Library.
A dinner on the final night of the visit gave members of the wider community
who have visited Yubetsu or have hosted Yubetsu visitors, an opportunity to
meet the visitors and renew friendships.
During the evening Sister Cities Chairperson, Allison Rosanowski and Avis
Hewson were presented with special awards from the Yubetsu Town Council
to mark their contributions to the relationship.
Allison said “our enduring connection with Yubetsu is a testament to the
strength of international friendships. It's an honour to be recognised by the
Yubetsu Town Council, and we look forward to fostering this relationship for
years to come”.
A group of Yubetsu High School students arrived after the delegation to
spend 10 days at Darfield High School, a reciprocal relationship that has been
ongoing for over 23 years.
A delegation from the Malvern Community Board and the wider community
plan to visit Yubetsu in 2024 or 2025, to celebrate 25 years of friendship.

Step up this summer and get home safe
It’s that time of year again, the season of parties, work do’s, beach days and barbecues where we
break out the drinks. We all know what to do, or what not to do, we have all heard the different tag
lines over the years:
· If you drink and drive, you’re a bloody idiot
· Stop a mate from driving drunk, bloody legend
· Sorry, that’s a fail
And yet our family and friends are still crashing and being killed on Selwyn roads due to impaired
driving. There is no excuse for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It’s time to step up
and save lives.
Driving impaired simply isn’t worth the risk, to life, to family, to friends, to work. Plan ahead and
sort out how you, your family and your friends are going to get home safely.
There are plenty of options available, if you take some time to sort your safe ride home before you
head out. Stay alert to your family and friends’ intoxication levels — if they look like driving, be
brave, save their lives or potentially the lives of others, get them to use another option to get home.
It can be hard to step up and question others, but what’s a little discomfort if it saves a life? Think
about the risks, don’t do it, and stop others from doing it. Get home safe this summer. For other

THE CRUSADERS have
revealed a new jersey for the
upcoming season – and it
aims to help lift children out of
poverty.
The franchise has gifted the
front sponsor’s mark on their
new 2024/2025 Super
Rugby Pacific retail
jerseys to KidsCan.
The jersey was
launched on Thursday at
West Spreydon School.
It is available for fans
to purchase in store or
online, with $5 from
every one sold through
the Crusaders shop going
to KidsCan.
The jersey the team will wear
on the field next season is set
to feature the same design and
pattern, but the front sponsor
will be announced in the new
year.

Mixed Touch Team
Rolleston College Mixed Touch Team head to New Zealand Secondary Schools
Touch Nationals in Rotorua in early December to defend the crown the team
won last year. The team is coached by Jase Keno, Hunter Keno and Denise Keno
who also acts as the manager. The team train twice a week at 7am on Tuesdays
and Thursdays, play Supertouch in the boys grade on Wednesday afternoons in
at Hagley and Prebbleton touch on Thursday nights they are a busy team that
work hard. For the Year 13s in the team Roman Keno (Co-Captain), Izzy Hill
(Co-Captain), Shaun Kempton, Joseph Hall, Ted Ward and Tony Worthington
who have given so much to this team, it’s extra motivation for these students
as it’s the last tournament for The College before they head onto their new
journey’s in 2024. The younger students in the team are working hard to make
sure they keep the high standards the team have worked to over the past years.

Velcro dogs at Adobe Kennels
Have you ever heard of a Velcro dog?
Erika at Adobe Kennels (Great Mates
Kirwee) uses this term to describe
greyhounds, suggesting, “They stick
to you and want to be everywhere you
are.” Located in Kirwee, Adobe Kennels
is owned by experienced greyhound
trainers and owners Sarah Clausen and
Matt Roberts. Greyhound Racing New
Zealand (GRNZ) fully funds the kennels
where 17 greyhounds are housed while
one foster dog is housed inside. With
a blanket “no-kill” policy on retired
racing greyhounds, the purpose is to
transition greyhounds so they are ready
to be rehomed into suburban life.
Working from a waitlist, the dogs
arrive at the kennel, where they receive
health and dental checks. Vaccinations
are checked to be up-to-date, and dogs
are desexed if not already done. The
dogs are then assessed on being around
a small dog. The hero is Pippa- a tiny
Sydney Silky. Erika says, “She’s the
hardest-working dog on the property!”
From there, they also meet Wolfie the
cat for more socialisation with other
animals. Many greyhounds are very
successfully cat-trainable! However,
if further training is needed, they are
trained by Karen
de Wit of Goodogz
Training.

and behaviour
training where
they experiment
with the dogs so
they will get the
best outcome in
their new home.
With a key focus
on transitioning
into suburban life,
Erika says,” We pride ourselves on the
transition from kennels to the home, to
make it as smooth as possible.” Part of
this training sees them taking the dogs
into the West Melton township, walking
around busy school areas, and going to
local market days. These interactions
enable them to assess whether the dog is
good around noise, kids, wheelchairs,
prams, bicycles, and traffic.
Greyhounds make loving
and loyal pets. People often
think greyhounds need a
lot of exercise, but Erika
says they are relatively lazy
and low maintenance with
few health issues. They
love nothing more than a
nap. Many are quite happy
chilling at home when their
people are out and about at
work. There is a greyhound
for everyone and one that
will fit in with your lifestyle.

in New Zealand are fully

Shetland (Reddy Moth) is giant goofball of a
dog with an absolute heart of gold. A kennel favourite Shetty
as he is affectionately known adores people and will be an
incredibly loyal dog when he finds his family. He is sociable
with other dogs although sometimes forgets his size so is best

He loves his walks and would suit an active home where he can go
on hill walks and day tramps. He is great with larger dogs, but not

Plant spinach, broccoli,
cucumber seedlings now
Vegetables
Not a true spinach, New
Zealand spinach (Tetragonia
expansa) is invaluable for gardens
that dry out in late summer.
Allow 60cm between each plant
and sow in groups of two or
three seeds, thinning later. This
plant prefers a hot, dry, sunny
situation. Growth is rapid and
when plants begin to spread, the
growing tips should be nipped
out so leafy shoot tips will grow.
Cut these frequently and cook
before eating.
Celery can be planted during
the next three or four weeks. The
old method of digging a trench
and filling it with compost or
manure mixed with soil before
planting has much to recommend
it, but celery will grow well
in any good soil. Keep the plants
well watered to prevent them
running to seed.
Outdoor cucumbers also need
rich, moist soil. Raised beds are
best if the soil is heavy. This does
not need to be sophisticated.
Make a flat-topped heap, starting
with a couple of sacks of horse
manure to a depth of 15cm to
20cm, then well-rotted lawn
clippings or compost and a layer
of soil. A heap about 30cm high
is sufficient. Sow seeds in groups
of three at 60cm intervals along
the middle of the bed. Covering
with a mini-cloche — a plastic
soft-drink bottle with the top
removed is ideal — will speed
germination and shelter seedlings
from cold winds. Once they
are growing, remove the covers
and control growth of side shoots
by cutting them off, one leaf
beyond a fruit.
Gardens benefit from regular
hoeing, especially as ground
starts to dry after heavy rain at
this time of year. Stirring soil
thoroughly allows air and sun to
enter and keeps weeds down. It
also reduces the amount of water
required as the loose soil acts as
mulch, reducing evaporation of
moisture in the soil.
Broccoli is hardier than its
close relative, cauliflower, and
is easier to grow. Broccoli seed
can be sown now to mature in
the coldest months of the year.
Varieties include Shogun, Purple
Sprouting and the decorativelooking
Italian Precoe. Ground
cleared of early potatoes, broad
beans or peas can be used for
broccoli. Plant seedlings out at
the end of December and during
January.
Fruit
Gooseberry bushes put in this
year should be summer-pruned
soon, to allow sun and air to
penetrate to the centres of the
bushes. Shoots growing into the
centre or crossing other stronger
ones should be removed close to
the branch from which they have
sprung. Mulch gooseberries with
compost or stable manure and
keep the bushes well watered.
Raspberry canes may have
young sucker growths around
their base. It is a good sign,
showing the plants are strong
and virile, and promises well for
next summer’s fruit. The new
shoots are next year’s fruiting
canes and should be thinned and
allowed to grow 1m or more.
Plums, apples, pears, peaches
and nectarines on heavily laden
trees should be thinned. Unless
this is done thoroughly, the crop
will be plentiful but small-sized
and often misshapen because of
the pressure from neighbouring
fruit. Remove the centre (king)
fruit first.
Flowers
Roses appreciate heavy manuring.
This can be done by mulching,
watering with liquid manure
or top-dressing with commercial
rose fertilisers.
Chrysanthemums can have
their centres pinched out, encouraging
them to send out three
or four strong side shoots for
good flowers in autumn.
Half-hardy annuals such as
asters, French marigolds and
zinnias can be planted out now,
ideally in rich soil.
Nasturtiums will thrive and
produce more flowers than leaves
in the poorest soils, provided
they are in a warm, sunny position.
There are two types, trailing
— which can cover a large area
and will climb shrubs and fences
— and the compact varieties,
such as the Whirlybird strain,
sold in individual colours, as
well as mixes. Salmon Baby is a
semi-double variety suitable for
hanging baskets, while Alaska
and Jewel of Africa have variegated
foliage.
Fuchsias will benefit from a
top-dressing of compost or old
animal manure applied in early
summer to keep the soil in good
condition and retain moisture.
Gladioli should be growing
strongly now. Stake the plants if
strong winds are expected.

Pot plants don’t
have to be a pain
IF YOU ARE planning on go
away for a Christmas holiday
break, the prospect of watering
the garden – container plants
in particular – can put a real
dampener on your summer.
The easy answer would be to
just put all container plants into
the garden and be done with the
fussing.
However, as plant accommodation,
rather than providing a luxury
getaway, pots and containers
are more like a prison sentence,
with water and food limited and
excess sun and wind in exposed
locations.
This means you need to be
cunning with your compost and a
wizard with your choice of green
matter.
Why is it that weeds can abseil
their way into a pot and look
so healthy, while the plant you
intended for the limelight looks
anaemic and spindly?
It’s because most of us are unrealistic
about the level of maintenance
we will need to lavish on
our charges.
It’s tempting to go for multicoloured
pot plants but such
high-octane performance demands
the pampering of a movie
star – weekly deadheading and
feeding and almost daily watering,
so it’s really only for the keenest
enthusiast.
Spring bulbs are another classic
disaster area – irresistible when
we see the pictures at the garden
centre but a disaster a fortnight
later when we fail to follow up
after the leaves and flowers have
flopped and faded.
Stick them in plastic containers
before sinking them inside a
classy bit of earthenware. Later,
out they go to make way for a
more permanent successor. It is
a mistake to assume special new
plants somehow deserve a prime
spot in a container. Instead, plant
them in the ground where they
will get their roots down and
draw deep for summer moisture.
And if you want to see them, go
out to the garden and look.
If your soil is heavy, spend some
effort planting them on mounds
and improve soil structure with
plenty of grit and compost.
The most successful pot plants
are tried and tested toughies that
will survive on neglect. Essentials
include succulents, flaxes, native
xeronema and epiphytic plants,
which are used to hanging out like
a shoestring.
Epiphytes include spiky astelias
as well as other native foliage
plants such as Griselinia lucida
and pseudopanax – both of which
are amazingly drought-tolerant.
Don’t mingle too many specimens
in one confined space
because fights are bound to break
out. Instead, give each its own
home but herd pots together to
create communities of contrasting
forms and textures.
Choose the dramatic ones such
as aloes and softer euphorbias or
those, such as sedum morganianum
with its waxy grey dreadlocks,
which are able to bungy
over the sides of even the tallest of
drums.
Neat topiary balls, cones and
humps, whether it be box or
native coprosma and corokia,
have minimal water requirements,
but don’t discount conifers which
are surprisingly drought-tolerant.
Bromeliads never outgrow their
place in a pot if sited sensitively.

Motocross challenges
New Zealanders and motorsport
seem to go hand in hand. Some
inspiring females include New Zealand’s
Courtney Duncan, four times winner
of the Women’s Motocross World
Championship title. In the Selwyn
community, young female riders have
also embraced motorsport and gained
National titles. One rider is Avey Smith, a
National motocross title holder in 2019.
Now nearly 19, she has competed in
motocross for over 15 years.
Avey has been encouraged and
extensively supported by her father,
who is a two-time National Junior title
holder. She is grateful to him for paying
her entry fees and other riding expenses
while competing. Apart from being
her mechanic, he now coaches other
riders who are her “brothers”. They are
doing exceptionally well in motocross,
competing around New Zealand.
Although a die-hard Kawasaki fan, after
racing her bike at one meeting, she was
allowed to ride a Husqvarna TC 85. With
results proving she was six seconds faster
on the Husqvarna, her father bought her
one. For the last two years, she has been
riding a Husqvarna TC125.
Motocross is a physically demanding
sport, and with a more powerful
bike, Avey says she noticed the power
difference. She had to learn how to control
it, which meant getting back into the gym
and working on upper body
strength to control it. The
best training is “seat time”
on a bike, practising corners,
jumps, starts and straights.
On the track, Avey advises,
“The rider also needs always
to be thinking ahead, looking
ahead and preparing for
what’s going to come next.
You might know the track
well, but the track can always
change.”
When Avey started racing,
she had to enter the boys’
junior class. She claims, “They
looked at me as another guy,
which wasn’t bad as they
didn’t treat me any different.”
Riding against faster riders in
the class was challenging, as
they would still “come at me quite hard”.
She needed to accept that the boys ride
aggressively in a male-dominated sport.
She is now able to race in the women’s
class. However, not all issues are on the
track. It appears some race committees
still treat female riders differently, as
male race classes appear to take priority
over the female classes. There’s no lack
of females willing and keen to compete,
as the last event Avey raced at was the
all-female MX Ladies Champs, with
approximately 18 females in the Senior B
class.
Only racing at specific events now, Avey
aims to have fun. When she was heavily
involved in the sport, her goal was to win
and “trophy hunting. Competing is now
about having fun, enjoying the day and
being with friends.
Not wanting her years of knowledge
and experience to go to waste, she invites
young girls to contact her for training.
She advises young female riders, “Don’t
let the pressure from anyone get to you,”
and “focus on yourself and your racing.”
With a mature attitude, she suggests, “Set
goals, reach one and then set another.”
