Christmas parade back 

after four year hiatus

THE CITY launched its 

festive season in style on 

Sunday with the popular 

Christmas Show Parade, held 

at a new location. 

Blue skies and warm temperatures 

helped attract more 

than 35,000 people who filled 

the streets at the Canterbury 

Agricultural Park to enjoy the 

colourful spectacle. 

Parade director Jason Reekers 

said it was great to finally 

get the annual show up and 

running, following a four-year 

break due to Covid and last 

year’s rain cancellation. 

“We have all of the old 

traditional Santa Parade floats 

that date back 75 years,” he 

said. 

“We’ve restored them all, 

fixed all the motors, and we’ve 

got some new ones. We’ve 

got 66 entries in the parade, 

all singing, all dancing and

Intersection 

upgrade 

discussion

PLANS TO install new traffic 

lights, turning lanes, signalised 

pedestrian crossings and 

cycle lanes at the Greers and 

Langdons Rd intersection will be 

discussed at a joint community 

board meeting on Monday. 

The joint decision meeting 

of the Waipapa Papanui- 

Innes-Central and Waimāero 

Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood 

Community Boards will be held 

at the Fendalton Service Centre 

boardroom from 4.30pm. 

Consultations on the 

intersection upgrade closed on 

October 31, and feedback and 

staff recommendations will be 

available soon. 

Said Papanui-Innes-Central 

chair Emma Norrish: “The 

meeting is open to the community. 

We have been pushing for 

a better traffic light system for a 

very long time, since the opening 

of the North Link expansion. 

“Traffic flow has increased 

on the roads and we’re making 

it safer for the Greers and 

Langdons Rd intersection, which 

will also impact the Greers and 

Reynolds Ave intersection.” 

The development and expansion 

of the Northlink Retail 

Park has also caused significant 

delays at the intersection, with 

about 29,000 vehicles or more 

travelling through Greers and 

Langdons Rds a day.

are invited to write personal messages to their loved ones who have 

died on wooden Christmas decorations. These messages are displayed 

throughout the month, creating a beautiful and poignant memorial. 

On Christmas Eve, these messages are ceremoniously burned, allowing 

them to be sent to loved ones. It’s a touching way to provide support and 

connection during a time of remembrance and reflection.

From the track to the ministry

AFTER BEING involved in the 

horse racing industry for more 

than 35 years, Salvation Army 

chaplain Andrew McKerrow has 

changed tact. 

As New Zealand’s first racing 

industry chaplain he has been 

working with New Zealand 

Thoroughbred Racing on a 

Salvation Army pilot drug and 

alcohol programme for jockeys. 

In January, McKerrow, 50, 

will take on a full-time ministry 

position with the Christchurch 

North Salvation Army in Belfast, 

where he will work alongside his 

wife Kim. 

“The timing for this position 

is perfect; the current minister 

was looking for a new post, and 

I really like what Christchurch 

North Salvation Army has been 

working on lately and what they 

stand for. 

“I’ll be able to concentrate 

on my hometown area and do 

that well. It’s a full circle really, 

as I am from Belfast originally 

and now I am excited to finally 

return and be able to give back 

to the community I grew up in. I 

can’t wait. 

“I am a big believer in 

connection. Because of COVID, 

I find people are more reluctant 

to be out and about. I’d like to 

invite people to belong and feel 

as though they are not isolated, 

by creating a safe space for

In his current role, McKerrow 

has worked at racetracks around 

the country, offering support and 

guidance to drivers, trainers and 

jockeys 

“If it wasn’t for the people, I’d 

never have thought I’d go into 

racing chaplaincy. I began on a 

jockey apprenticeship. I wasn’t 

very good and felt naturally 

connected with racing and the 

industry,” he said.

opportunity to be in sacred 

spaces. 

“The industry, with the racers, 

encounters some very dark 

situations. It is a privilege and 

an honour to be able to share the 

space with them and just sit and 

be. It is why we are there.” 

He will continue to take 

part in Racing New Zealand’s 

cross-code initiative, which aims 

to enhance the mental health

Santa’s Brekkie Pancakes 

with fresh berries 

This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these 

pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone! 

You will need: 

• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash) 

• 4 eggs 

• ½ cup rice flour 

• 2 tbsp whole linseed 

• ½ tsp salt 

• grated lemon rind 

• juice from 1 lemon 

• splash of vanilla 

• butter to cook the pancakes 

Method: 

1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl. 

2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt 

and lemon ingredients. 

3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter. 

4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side 

until they bubble on the surface or hold 

together enough to be flipped over. 

5. If the mixture is thick, flatten the 

pancakes out once they’ve been turned 

over. Each pancake should be around 

1cm thick. 

Kid’s version: 

Decorate each pancake with red berries 

for Santa’s hat, Greek yoghurt or 

whipped cream for Santa’s beard and 

chocolate buttons or grape halves for 

Santa’s eyes. 

Adult’s version: 

Serve with a mix of fresh strawberries, 

blueberries, raspberries, and 

boysenberries. Top off with Greek 

yoghurt.

“We couldn’t get the parade 

in the city. Christchurch has 

been designed in a way that it 

can’t really host a parade. So 

we’ve had everything here at 

the park, but we couldn’t just 

bring people here to the park 

just for a parade. So we’ve had 

to supply entertainment.”

Christchurch Children’s Christmas 

Parade Trust, which want 

to re-establish it as the city’s 

premier Christmas celebration.
