Endangered penguins 

are part of the family

A FAMILY on Banks Peninsula 

are playing their part in 

protecting the largest little 

penguin colony on mainland 

New Zealand. 

Sheep and beef farmers 

Shireen and Francis Helps have 

been carrying out predator 

control and rehabilitation to 

help the now 2000-strong colony 

of white-flippered penguins 

thrive at their Flea Bay home. 

White-flippered penguins 

only live in Canterbury and are 

a variant of the Australasian 

kororā little penguin. 

The Helps ran an eco-tourism 

business, called Pōhatu Tours, 

which involved taking tourists 

from Akaroa by 4WD to the see 

the colony. 

Shireens said they have been 

trapping predators, putting up 

fencing and rehabilitating the 

kororā colony on their farm 

for decades – but the fight is 

not over. “We’re keeping the 

predators out of the colonies,” 

Helps said. 

“We got on top of the ferrets 

years and years ago, so actually 

we haven’t seen a ferret in the 

bay for a very long time. 

“We do have an ongoing problem 

with stoats. They’re very 

hard to catch. Very cunning 

little blighters.” 

Helps said the colony has now 

spread to neighbouring properties, 

including Department of 

Conservation land. 

“Of course, we graze that, 

because the worst enemy for 

penguins is long grass and 

dense vegetation. The predators 

go mad in it, and that causes 

problems for the rats and mice. 

Predators come in after them, 

and that’s when you start to lose 

birds.” 

Other threats to the penguins 

are extreme heat and severe 

weather events.

Zonta says ‘yes’ to dragon boat racing

and yes to dragon boat racing in 

an effort to raise awareness of 

violence against women. 

Zonta Christchurch-Canterbury 

and Zonta Christchurch 

South formed a dragon boating 

team to raise the profile of 

one of Zonta’s major advocacy 

campaigns: ‘Zonta Says No to 

Violence against Women and 

Girls’. 

After a few practice sessions, 

the team felt ready to tackle their 

first regatta. On Saturday the 

newly formed team competed 

against 16 teams in the Aoraki 

Ice Breaker Regatta at Kerrs 

Reach. 

Despite not winning any of 

their heats, the team managed 

to get within 20 seconds of first 

place in the three 200m races 

and within 40 seconds of winning 

the three 500m races. 

“We have only practised 

five times by 

paddling with 

wooden paddles.

societies run by volunteers. 

“As we got out of the boat on 

the last race, the Breast of Life 

team formed a guard of honour 

for us, so amazing. What a 

wonderfully positive community 

Dragon Boating is,” said Kyle- 

Stevenson. 

“Now, more than ever, it is 

essential that we work together 

to end violence against women 

and girls. 

“We also have a campaign that 

runs worldwide with a focus on 

activism for 16 days to December 

10. During this time, you will 

see many buildings around 

Christchurch lit up in orange.” 

Zonta is an international 

organisation originating in 

Chicago with a mission to build 

a better world for women and 

girls. 

“We are achieving this 

through education against child 

marriage, climate change, living 

free from violence, and offering 

various scholarships to young 

women in Tertiary education,” 

said Kyle-Stevenson. 

Zonta clubs support women 

and girls in 63 countries 

around the world and there are 

about 535 members in 

New Zealand.

“The fences were munted . . . 

the team was running around in 

the rain rescuing penguins out 

of the boxes and burrows as the 

hill started to fall down and the 

creek came up,” she said. 

“The penguin boxes were just 

going out to sea so we ended up 

with 30 chicks in the kitchen 

here in cages. 

“Plus the sheep in the house, 

too.”

Christmas parade in four years

THE FESTIVE season was 

launched in style with the first 

ever Christmas Show Parade at 

Canterbury Agricultural Park. 

Blue skies and warm temperatures 

attracted more than 

35,000 people to the colourful 

spectacle on Sunday. 

Parade director Jason Reekers 

said it was great to finally 

get the event up and running 

after a four-year break due to 

Covid and rain last year. 

“We have all of the old traditional 

Santa parade floats that 

date back 75 years,” he said. 

The last Christmas parade 

in the city was held in 2019 on 

Madras St. 

“We’ve restored them 

all, fixed all the motors, and 

we’ve got some new ones. 

We’ve got 66 entries in the 

parade, all singing, 

all dancing and they’re looking 

beautiful.” 

The floats will include a giant 

Mother Goose, Disney Princesses 

and traditional favourites 

like the Mad Hatter.Reekers 

said logistics meant rethinking 

the event and combining the 

parade with a festival. 

“We couldn’t get the parade 

in the city. Christchurch has 

been designed in a way that it 

can’t really host a parade. So 

we’ve had everything here at 

the park, but we couldn’t just 

bring people here to the park 

just for a parade. So we’ve had 

to supply entertainment.” 

The event is run by the 

Christchurch Children’s Christmas 

Parade Trust, which want 

to re-establish it as the city’s 

premier Christmas celebration.

Santa’s Brekkie Pancakes 

with fresh berries 

This one is not just for the kids – the sweetness of the bananas makes these 

pancakes scrumptious and a delicious, healthy breakfast hit for everyone! 

You will need: 

• 4-5 bananas (soft enough to mash) 

• 4 eggs 

• ½ cup rice flour 

• 2 tbsp whole linseed 

• ½ tsp salt 

• grated lemon rind 

• juice from 1 lemon 

• splash of vanilla 

• butter to cook the pancakes 

Method: 

1. Peel and mash the bananas in a bowl. 

2. Stir in the eggs, vanilla, linseed, salt 

and lemon ingredients. 

3. Add flour and mix to a smooth batter. 

4. Cook pancakes in frypan on one side 

until they bubble on the surface or hold 

together enough to be flipped over. 

5. If the mixture is thick, flatten the 

pancakes out once they’ve been turned 

over. Each pancake should be around 

1cm thick. 

Kid’s version: 

Decorate each pancake with red berries 

for Santa’s hat, Greek yoghurt or 

whipped cream for Santa’s beard and 

chocolate buttons or grape halves for 

Santa’s eyes. 

Adult’s version: 

Serve with a mix of fresh strawberries, 

blueberries, raspberries, and 

boysenberries. Top off with Greek 

yoghurt.

Families in Ukraine 

need your help! 

The Sechka family live in a rural area 

of Sarny region, western Ukraine, in 

an old dilapidated house. Mykhailo, 

40, and his wife Nadiya, 31, work hard to 

provide for their family. They face a massive 

challenge as three of their five children have 

severe disabilities. One of their daughters 

is unable to walk at all. The health of 

their children means they need medical 

examinations, check-ups, and treatment. 

Which costs money. 

Mykhailo used to work in forestry, but 

when the war began, he lost most of his 

wages then he had to quit. Since then, he 

has focused on farming and keeps cows, 

pigs, geese, and poultry to survive. 

Son Mieko loves his parents and sees they 

are hardworking. Mykhailo must cultivate 

a lot of land to grow forage for the animals, 

and vegetables and grain for the family. He 

was using an old tractor that he bought 15 

years ago. The tractor is 50 years old and 

required constant repair. Mykhailo says that 

after each working day he had to repair it 

and it wasn’t worth the money. Since then, 

the old tractor became a place where Mieko 

and his siblings play. 

Despite Mykhailo and Nadiya’s efforts, 

the family’s situation became very difficult. 

The loss of income, health issues and the 

ongoing war has taken its toll. 

Mieko’s family need help with resources, 

such as tools and machinery, so they can 

grow food for themselves. 

Right now, the Ukrainian economy 

is shrinking, and inflation is rising. So, 

supporting families just like Mieko’s with a 

self-sufficiency project will be a lifeline. 

Mieko’s anxiety and uncertainty and have 

resulted in physical and psychological 

issues. There is no doubt that the impact 

of war will be felt by his family and many 

others for years to come.
