COVER SONG GOES 

VIRAL

ST ANDREW’S College band’s 

performance of the classic 

Led Zeppelin song Stairway to 

Heaven has gone viral. 

The performance at the college’s 

prizegiving has become 

an internet sensation, accumulating 

more than 150,000 views 

and 4000 likes on Facebook. 

The rendition of the 1971 rock 

anthem was the main event at 

annual prizegiving, leaving the 

audience of about 3500 attendees 

in awe. 

The band, comprising more 

than 100 musicians, skillfully 

blended the sounds of 

the school’s rock band, school 

orchestra, senior choir, and jazz 

band. 

At the helm of the performance 

were St Andrew’s head of 

the music department, Duncan 

Ferguson, and music teacher, 

Mark Hodgkinson. 

Their guidance, combined 

with the talents of lead singer 

Grace Burnett (right), lead guitarist 

Mia Fraser, and acoustic 

guitarist James McIver, played 

a pivotal role in bringing the 

cover to life. 

Ferguson said he “didn’t expect” 

the amount of traction the 

performance would get online. 

“I sat down at breakfast on 

Saturday morning and suddenly 

discovered there were 12,000 

views, and I thought, oh, that’s a 

bit interesting,” Ferguson said. 

“Then, over the course of the 

weekend, it just got a bit nuts 

and, it’s exciting.” 

Ferguson said co-ordinating 

the band was “about a year-long 

process” but “wasn’t as hard as 

it seemed”. 

“The first time all the groups 

came together and heard it was 

just three days before the prizegiving 

where we had our final 

dress rehearsal,” he said. 

He admitted none of the 

students were that excited about 

the performance at the start of 

the year because “they were all 

quite young, and none of them 

listened to Led Zeppelin”. 

“But once they saw all the 

groups together, they suddenly 

caught the vision for it, and they 

then got quite excited,” Ferguson 

said. 

Stairway to Heaven was 

written in late 1971 by Led 

Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy Page 

and lead singer Robert Plant 

for their untitled fourth studio 

album (commonly known as 

Led Zeppelin IV). 

The song is widely regarded as 

one of the greatest rock songs of 

all time.

Iconic Kingswood back on the road

IT WAS the VIP car of choice 

during the 1974 Commonwealth 

Games in Christchurch. 

And now one of the distinctive 

Holden Kingwoods will be part 

of the Santa Parade in New 

Brighton on Saturday. 

The Kingswood is the New 

Brighton Museum’s showpiece 

in the parade, which starts at 

10.30am. 

Museum president Wayne 

Hawker said the vehicle is “the 

jewel in their crown”. 

“After the games, the 

Kingswoods were sold off. This 

particular vehicle was bought by 

the Freakish family and has been 

owned by the same family ever 

since. 

“While its owner, Clint, is 

based in Nelson, parents Paul 

and Heather care for the car 

which is based here.” 

The parade will take place on 

the corner of Marine Pde and 

Hawke St, alongside the seaside 

market which opens at 10am. 

There will be an array of arts 

and crafts, as well as gift-ware 

to choose from alongside food, 

a bouncy castle for children and 

free face painting. 

Santa will arrive on New 

Brighton Beach at 10.15am and 

at about 11.30am, the market 

entertainment will begin until 

the closure of the event at 2pm.

Collaborative planting efforts win award

zone this year. 

They have been recognised 

as part of an outstanding 

collaboration 

with the Eco 

Action Nursery 

Trust, and 

the wider 

community.

The trust grows native trees 

and plants suitable for native 

bird food and habitats within 

the red zone, sourced from the 

Travis Wetlands.

plant more than 30,000 native 

plants this year, 5500 of which 

were propagated in our own St 

Margaret’s College nursery with 

the support of our middle and 

senior students.

Eco-Action Nursery Trust, 

Õtautahi-Christchurch and 

Waitaha-Canterbury for this 

well-deserved recognition.” 

The trust was founded in 

2016 as a way to create learning 

opportunities for students 

by taking action in their 

communities to tackle climate 

change. 

Said Newton: “The schools 

are a fundamental part of 

the project, as the students 

learn practical skills, more 

about horticulture and the 

environment. 

“They have expressed how they 

feel better about their impact 

on climate change through this 

project.” 

To date, the satellite nurseries 

have contributed 20,764 

volunteer hours of planting. 

The sustainable business 

awards, which have been 

running for 21 years, recognise 

and celebrate success in 

sustainability. 

Next year, the trust is looking 

to double the number of plants 

grown to about 60,000. 

Said Newton: “We’ll just keep 

doing what we do – I want to get 

as many plants in the ground 

within the next 10 years before 

I die.”

AN OLYMPIC hopeful wants 

to go all the way in 

racewalking, but first he has 

to raise the funds to fly to the 

world championships. 

Jonah Cropp, 18, will 

represent New Zealand in 

the 10km event at the World 

Athletics racewalking team 

championships in Turkey in 

April. 

“It does feel really good 

with how far I’ve come with 

it, but I still plan to go way, 

way further,” he said. 

The recently graduated St 

Andrew’s College student 

began racewalking when he 

was 10. His peers did not take 

the sport seriously when he 

first started. 

“People just thought it was 

a wee silly thing. But, as I got 

more and more awards for it, 

they started being, like, even 

if they didn’t know me, oh, 

that’s the speedwalking guy.” 

Racewalking is similar to 

speed or powerwalking and 

has two main rules – one foot 

must be on the ground at all 

times and competitors must 

keep their bottom leg straight 

until the leading leg lands. 

Cropp said the most 

difficult challenge is 

maintaining speed over a 

long distance. 

“You have to really work to 

try and keep the same pace 

for every single kilometre.” 

He won the 10km 

event at the New Zealand 

road running championships 

in September. His time of 

47min, 23sec in the under-20 

event qualified him for the 

world championships. 

To save the $3000 required 

for the trip to Turkey, Cropp 

will host sausage sizzles and 

offer a lawn mowing service. 

He plans to study 

psychology and sports 

coaching at Canterbury 

University next year. 

“I’m going to be focusing a 

lot more on my sport.” 

Cropp’s long-term goal is 

to qualify for the Los Angeles 

Olympics in 2028 or Brisbane 

in 2032. 

To prepare for the world 

championships he trains in 

the gym twice a week and has 

a cardio session on Sunday 

and a race on Saturday. 

“It’s very enjoyable. I’ve 

made tonnes of progress, 

looking back at what I was 

doing last year compared 

to this year, or the year 

beforehand.”

With the year racing towards 

the Christmas break and Santa 

dusting off his red suit I thought 

I’d outline something I took part in 

recently that’s been enlightening, 

and I hope worthy of sharing. 

I’ve just completed a character strengths 

survey. 

No big deal, I can hear you say. Surely you 

know your own strengths. But sometimes 

you don’t – or the things you perceived to 

be strengths aren’t as high up the list as 

you’d envisaged. 

The actual survey was the VIA Character 

Strengths Survey. 

It’s easily accessible online, deemed to 

be psychometrically validated (which is a 

term that attests to a tool’s accuracy and 

meaning) and all very necessary when 

you consider the information you’ll be 

receiving. 

You can choose the free test, like me, 

rather than joining up to anything greater 

and after answering some 90-plus multichoice 

questions you get your five top 

strengths. In fact, you actually get each of 

the 24 strengths identified as Top, Middle 

or Lesser. 

The strengths themselves are derived 

from Virtues originally defined by 

Peterson and Seligman, who co-authored 

Character Strengths and Virtues. These 

virtues are Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, 

Justice, Temperance and Transcendence. 

Hailed as groundbreaking, this book was 

the culmination of a three-year research 

project involving 55 social scientists 

and was described as “descriptive not 

prescriptive, endeavouring to classify 

ingredients of goodness in humans across 

all cultures and nations.” I really like this 

idea and although it all sounds fairly lofty, 

the actual survey, once taken – and I’m 

encouraging everyone I know to do just 

that – shines a light on what makes you, 

you! 

So here were some of my top strengths, 

starting with number one. 

Drumroll and no surprise: 

Leadership followed by Kindness and 

Bravery. 

Bravery resonated deeply with me because 

it is deemed as acting on conviction, even 

if it’s unpopular, something that’s been a 

constant in my career. And here I’ll switch 

to the least of my strengths, Humour. 

Although I’d love to feign surprise, it’s a 

definite reminder to work on having more 

fun and trying to see the lighter side of life. 

And the benefits of knowing all of this? 

Quite simply, to build resilience and reduce 

stress and anxiety, whilst increasing your 

wellbeing. To continue to nurture the 

qualities that allow you to flourish and 

work on attributes that, once identified, 

could be further developed. 

There you have it. With 24 strengths 

there’s more than enough for all of us to 

find the right fit and I’m sure if you decide 

to do it you won’t be disappointed. 

Now some reflections based on the year 

that’s been. 

Travel 

I’m deeply committed to learning more 

about the world and this year I’ve seen 

lots of it. I’ve observed changes in climate 

and habitats, and seen up-close some of 

the consequences of this with travel to 

the Amazon, Antarctica and South Africa. 

Family and Friends 

They are worthy of prioritizing and I’m so 

grateful for the love I share with both. 

Kindness 

A little goes a long way and whether in 

business or in life I’m sure all of us could 

benefit from more. 

So, with that can I wish you a happy 

Christmas, encourage you to follow 

your heart at least a little and live your 

strengths.

Just a little bit naughty 

Banana and chocolate 

chip mug cakes 

Serves 2 

Ingredients 

2 very ripe bananas, peeled 

2 eggs 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

25g butter, melted 

½ cup flour 

1 tsp baking soda 

1 tsp cinnamon 

pinch of salt 

½ cup milk chocolate chips 

walnuts, roughly chopped, to 

serve 

Cream cheese icing 

50g butter, melted 

100g cream cheese, at room temperature 

2 heaped Tbsp icing sugar 

Method

Williams, is sharing more of her “naughty, indulgent’’ 

recipes in her first cookbook, Kitty’s Kitchen: Just a 

Little Bit Naughty.

sandwich making business, then a food truck, 

followed by a small catering business before she 

discovered the power of Instagram. It enabled her to 

fully indulge in her passion for “naughty ingredients”.

put the butter in a small bowl. 

Heat in the microwave on high 

for 30 seconds or so, until melted. 

Add the cream cheese and icing 

sugar. Whisk until smooth then 

set aside. 

• Mash the bananas in a large 

bowl until smooth. Add eggs, 

vanilla essence and melted butter 

and stir until well combined. 

• Sift in the flour, baking soda, 

cinnamon and salt. Stir until well 

combined but take care not to 

over-stir. Fold in chocolate chips. 

• Divide the mixture between 

two mugs. One at a time, cook 

the mug cakes in the microwave 

for 2 minutes on high. (Every 

microwave is different so test after 

1 minute and go from there.) It’s 

better to be undercooked than 

overcooked – when you press 

the cake it should feel light and 

springy. 

• The cakes will be quite hot so 

it’s best to leave them for a couple 

of minutes to cool down slightly 

before icing. Pop the cream 

cheese icing into a snap-lock bag, 

or use a piping bag. You want 

to fill the corner. Twist the bag 

around until it feels tight, then 

snip the corner off using scissors. 

Do whatever design you desire, 

then top with the walnuts. 

Spicy prawn spaghetti 

with whipped parmesan 

ricotta 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

500g tomatoes, halved (I used 

vine tomatoes) 

1 red onion, roughly chopped 

4 garlic cloves 

2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 

2 Tbsp olive oil 

500g ricotta 

150g Parmesan, grated 

juice of ½ lemon 

200g spaghetti 

2½ cups thawed frozen prawns, 

peeled and deveined 

1 tsp chilli flakes 

butter for cooking 

handful of parsley, roughly 

chopped 

handful of basil, roughly 

chopped 

handful of coriander, roughly 

chopped 

Method 

• Preheat the oven to 180°C. 

• Put the tomatoes, red onion, 

garlic, balsamic vinegar and a 

drizzle of olive oil in an ovenproof 

dish and season with 

salt and pepper. Give it a good 

toss then chuck in the oven for 

35-40 minutes. The tomatoes 

should collapse into a sauce by 

this point and the house should 

smell divine! 

• Put the ricotta, Parmesan, 

lemon juice, a pinch of salt and 

a glug of olive oil into a blender 

and blitz until smooth. 

• Bring a pot of water to the 

boil and add the spaghetti. 

Cook until al dente. 

• Drain, reserving a cup of the 

starchy cooking water. 

• Drain off any excess liquid 

from the prawns, then pat them 

dry with a paper towel. 

• Coat the prawns in chilli 

flakes then pop them into a 

hot pan with a knob of butter. 

Once the prawns are almost 

cooked (they should still be just 

a touch translucent), add the 

tomato sauce to the prawns, stir 

through, then add the spaghetti 

and the reserved starchy water. 

Turn off the heat and add all of 

the fresh herbs, then stir again. 

• Grab a large serving dish. 

Put the whipped Parmesan 

ricotta on first, then top with 

the prawn spaghetti.

the test vehicle these are located 

in the centre console. 

The 4xe hybrid solution combines 

enhanced performance 

up to 177kW. This is a lot of 

power for a small SUV. Given 

its off-beat looks, it’s a performance 

wolf in sheep’s clothing. 

This impressive power output is 

achieved by pairing a 1.3-litre 

turbo petrol engine with an electric 

motor nestled between the 

rear axle, which is powered by an 

11.4kW battery that can be recharged 

while driving or through 

an external power outlet. 

While not the smoothest or 

sweetest sounding motor, it is, if 

nothing else a highly entertaining 

drive – a little less so when 

it runs out of battery power to 

hurry things along. A six-speed 

automatic does a competent 

enough job. The test vehicle’s 

transmission isn’t the most polished 

in its class, with a few more 

rough edges than you would 

expect given its lofty price tag. 

If you are looking for loads of

Lane Departure Warnings and 

Traffic-Sign Recognition. Also 

making the safety cut for this 

model is Blind Spot Detection, 

Park View Rear Backup Camera 

with dynamic grid lines, and 

Keyless Go. 

Handling is safe and predictable 

while body roll in faster 

cornering is well contained. 

Generally the test vehicle felt 

as well-planted as much larger 

vehicles across a variety of surfaces. 

There is just enough road 

feel to keep you connected and 

involved in the steering action. 

Suspension noise in low speed 

around-town driving, especially 

when travelling over poor road 

surfaces, isn’t as well suppressed 

as it should be for small SUV 

with an almost $70k asking price 

on its head. 

My off-road rambling wasn’t 

extensive and limited to a couple 

of modest creek crossings and 

a similar number of some farm 

tracks that offered up a few steep, 

short, sharp and well-weathered 

gradients to test the Renegade’s 

mettle. These challenges were 

easily dispatched, and gave me 

a timely reminder of why Jeep 

has been an off-road champ for 

decades.
