Pretoria School's memorable outing for Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month In a heartwarming event on 19 September <strong>2023</strong>, students with muscular dystrophy from Pretoria School embarked on a special outing at Denver Spur, Jacaranda Centre. This unforgettable day was filled with laughter, delicious meals and the joy of play as these young learners enjoyed the experience. The gathering served a dual purpose as it illuminated the importance of muscular dystrophy awareness, with the representative colour green taking the spotlight. During the outing, one of our group members had the opportunity to engage with the staff members of Spur, shedding light on the challenges and realities of muscular dystrophy. Capturing these memorable moments, we snapped numerous photographs, with the staff joining in by posing with the muscular dystrophy awareness frame. By Mulanga Kharidzha The day was a resounding success, overflowing with fun and camaraderie, all thanks to the exceptional care and hospitality extended by the Spur team. As an added surprise, the students were gifted with party packs and vouchers from Spur, as well as party packs from the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, making it a truly special occasion. We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ockie Kannenberg and the entire Denver Spur team for graciously hosting us, and to Pretoria School for their invaluable partnership with the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of Pretoria. The event was a testament to the power of community, empathy and raising awareness, reminding us that we are stronger when we stand together.
Celebrating World Duchenne Awareness Day World Duchenne Awareness Day takes place annually on 7 September. This year the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation Cape Branch took a few boys affected by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, who attend Astra School, to Table Mountain. Red balloons are the symbol of World Duchenne Awareness Day. We are grateful to Table Mountain National Park for providing us with complimentary tickets for the day. The boys had so much fun going up with the cable car and exploring the mountain. Radio awareness interviews On 12 September <strong>2023</strong>, social worker Samantha Muller, Imran Small (client) and Imran’s mother were interviewed by Muslima Ismail from Voice of the Cape radio station. Imran is one of our Duchenne muscular dystrophy heroes. Another radio interview took place with radio CCFM. Thank you Voice of the Cape and CCMF for the opportunity to raise much needed awareness about muscular dystrophy by means of radio. MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY AWARENESS AT TYGERHOF PRIMARY SCHOOL Social worker Siphokazi Wonxi and social auxiliary worker Nomfundo Faku facilitated an awareness session at Tygerhof Primary School. Thank you to the staff Tygerhof Primary School for the opportunity.
