Pedestrians
complain
about
cyclists
on Coastal
Pathway
• By Dylan Smits
CYCLISTS ARE causing
problems for pedestrians on
the new $17.3 million Coastal
Pathway.
A Ferrymead resident says
she had to quickly step out of
the way of a cyclist, injuring
her foot in the process. She was
with her mother and pushing
her toddler in a stroller.
The woman did not see the
cyclist travelling towards her,
she said until her mother told
her to “watch out.”
“I feel like every pedestrian
should feel in danger because
of these cyclists. They think
they own roads and our footpaths,”
she said.
The near miss happened by
Shag Rock.
The woman is not alone in
her concerns about cyclists
going too fast on the pathway.
Polly Nash, 77, said she now
avoids walking on the Coastal
Pathway out of fear of being
hit.
“I use a walking frame and
walk slow. They can be quite
unnerving at times. It’s people
with dogs and young families
who are most at risk.”
The city council is looking
for solutions. The best places
on the pathway to add signage
and pavement markings are
currently under consideration.
These markings and signs
would emphasise the shared
nature of the pathway.
City council planning and
delivery transport manager
Jacob Bradbury said the goal is
to “ensure that users are aware
that the shared path is a friendly
go-slow zone.”
He said pedestrians have
right of way on shared paths
like the Coastal Pathway.
“We acknowledge that some
cyclists may wish to travel
faster through this area, so the
on-road cycle lanes have been
retained for those who wish to
travel at speed.”
Regatta in limbo: Driver backs
return of SailGP to Lyttelton
• By Christopher Reive
KIWI SAILGP driver Phil
Robertson has thrown his
support behind the league
moving its New Zealand event
to Lyttelton after Auckland was
ruled out as a host.
The global foiling league was
scheduled to take to the waters
of the Waitematā Harbour in
March 2024, but with land at
Wynyard Point not available to
be utilised for spectators, SailGP
made the call they could not put
on an event that could run to
their standards and scrapped the
Auckland regatta.
However, SailGP is hopeful of
finding another suitable location
in New Zealand, with a return
to Lyttelton – after a successful
debut early in 2023 – the most
likely option.
“That gets our vote, that’s for
sure. We’d be very excited to go
back to Christchurch. That was
one of the best venues this series
has raced on. We had perfect
conditions, flat water and a lovely
time,” Robertson, who drives for
the Canadian SailGP Team, said
at a press conference ahead of an
event in Dubai at the weekend.
HAVE YOUR SAY: Should
SailGP return to Lyttelton?
Robertson’s Canadian team
finished third in Dubai, with
New Zealand winning and Australia
second.
SailGP chief executive Sir
Russell Coutts has indicated time
is running out to secure a venue
for the New Zealand event, and
the short-notice nature of the
PHOTOS: BRETT PHIBBS/ RICARDO PINTO/SAILGP
move is likely making things
a bit tougher. However, an announcement
about the future of
the 2024 event is expected to be
made in the coming weeks.
In the league’s New Zealand
debut earlier this year, Robertson
led the Canadian team to their
first event win on Lyttelton
Harbour.
New Zealand SailGP Team
driver Peter Burling voiced his
disappointment at the New
Zealand regatta having to be
moved away from Auckland, but
SAILGP: Canada beat
New Zealand and
Australia to win the
New Zealand event
in March. Inset: Phil
Robertson leads his
team to their win.
said it wasn’t something the team
could control.
“It’s a real shame not to be
having an event in Auckland,
the biggest city in New Zealand.
We’ve had a whole heap of racing
on the Waitematā (Harbour)
– it would’ve been a beautiful
place to sail, but SailGP as a
league decided it wasn’t viable
to host there with the amount
of space we had on the shore,
but hopefully we’ll have some
exciting news in weeks to come.”
Fish n chip
shop fire ‘a
good save’
by crew
• By Dylan Smits
VOLUNTEER firefighters saved
a Lyttelton fish and chip shop
from burning down after a small
fire broke out afterhours.
Lyttelton fire chief Mark Buckley
credited his crew for their
quick work extinguishing the
flames at the London Fish and
Chips shop before much damage
was done.
“It was a very, very good save
from the boys,” he said.
The fire was caused by a fat
fryer, which Buckley believes
was left on after closing.
At 12.30am on Saturday, staff
next door at Eruption Brewing
noticed smoke billowing out of
the fish an shop’s vent.
They called 111 and a team
of nine firefighters arrived and
put out the small fire within 30
minutes.
“It was very lucky that the
boys from eruption saw it,”
Buckley said.
He also said the incident
serves as a reminder to retailers
to make sure they turn off
appliances after closing.
‘It’s a shared path, share the thing’
• From page 1
Cyclists are recommended by
the city council to either pass
pedestrians considerately, use
alternative routes, or use the road
cycle lane.
Some users of the path,
especially cyclists, see the issue
differently and feel it is everyone’s
responsibility to keep the route
safe.
Reuben Hunt, of Sumner, uses
the pathway to walk and cycle.
He has sympathy for both sides
of the issue.
“You get a tiny minority of
cyclists and pedestrians that spoil
it for everyone else.”
Hunt believes it would help
solve the issue if advanced road
and speed cyclists used the road
cycle lane.
Sumner resident Peter van
Hout uses the pathway to cycle
to work. He believes some
pedestrians need to be more
aware of their surroundings.
“I see walkers walking on their
right, so I am heading for them.
Do I stay on my course, or do I
assume they will see me and go
back on track to their left again?”
Overall, van Hout wants
all users of the pathway to be
mindful of best practices on a
mixed-use pathway.
“Be kind, and that is what
EASE: The Coastal Pathway officially opened last week and residents such as handcyclist Sarah Kerr are enjoying utilising
the flat route as a way to avoid road traffic.
“You get a tiny minority of
cyclists and pedestrians
that spoil it for everyone
else.” – Reuben Hunt
it boils down to. It’s a shared
pathway, share the thing.”
Sumner Residents’ Association
and Hub coordinator Charlie
Hudson said despite these issues,
the pathway should keep its
character as a mixed-use route.
However, the residents’
association does recommend fast
cyclists use the road cycleway.
“If you’re going at a speed that
you would be comfortable with
on the road, then you need to be
on the road.”
Sarah Kerr is a hand cyclist
with cerebral palsy who wants
pedestrians to be understanding
of cyclists who are not
comfortable using the road
cycleway.
She has tried riding on the road
before but felt intimidated by the
proximity of the car traffic.
“It’s super scary.”
The issue of cyclists riding on
the pathway has been divisive
online, said Kerr.
“I have been told that all
cyclists on the pathway are rude
and if you’re a cyclist you should
be on the road.”
The hand cyclist finds it safer
to ride on the pathway. Her
handcycle’s top speed on flat
ground is only 8km/h.
“I do try to be aware of who’s
around me. If I see somebody
who is going to have trouble, I
either slow down or stop.”
Kerr believes cyclists riding
faster than 30km/h should use
the road cycleway.
Cashmere High races to victory
• By Sam Coughlan
CASHMERE HIGH School’s
junior adventure racing team
has won the national Get2Go
Challenge in Tongariro.
The team, made up of three
year 9 students and five year 10s,
were first out of 12 schools after
five days of gruelling competition
– running, biking, kayaking and
problem solving.
They scored 2484 points,
more than 200 clear of secondplaced
John Paul College from
Rotorua.
Cashmere High team coordinator
Mike Bennett said it
was a fantastic week.
“I think anyone would be
proud of this team. They’re really
great to work with, great doing
challenges and amazing outside
competition too,” he said.
The first and only previous
time Cashmere High lifted the
trophy was in 2012, and Bennett
said it’s great to get it back.
“We came close in 2021 when
we finished second, and lots of
these guys have older siblings who
were in that team so it’s good for
them to be able to get one up on
their siblings,” he said.
Despite coming second
to Middleton Grange in the
Canterbury regional event,
Cashmere qualified for the final
after Middleton Grange pulled
out.
“We were a bit lucky to make it,
but I think it showed that
we deserved to be there in the
end,” Bennett said.
The competition began with
three days of problem solving
tasks to earn competition points,
with events like bike limbo,
paddling an upside-down kayak,
and rope climbing.
Teams then competed in two
days of racing across land and
water in a bid to get to the finish
line first.
Staggered starts on the final
day based on existing points
meant no matter what had
happened in the lead-up, the
first team to finish would be the
champions.
And it was Cashmere High,
with Elsie Brown, Katie Chinn,
Ben Coughlan, Finn Groer, Silas
Jones, Greta Prince, AJ Williams
and Anna Wright getting there
first.
George Harrison - The Reluctant Beatle
by Philip Norman
From the author of the million-copy selling Shout!: The Beatles in Their Generation
and the bestselling John Lennon: The Life comes a revealing portrait of George
Harrison, the most undervalued and mysterious Beatle. Now, acclaimed Beatles
biographer Philip Norman examines Harrison through the lens of his numerous
self-contradictions. Unprecedented in scope and filled with numerous colour photos,
this rich biography captures George Harrison at his most multi-faceted: devoted
friend, loyal son, master guitar-player, brilliant songwriter, cocaine addict, serial
philanderer, global philanthropist, student of Indian mysticism, self-deprecating
comedian and, ultimately, iconic artist and man beloved by millions.
Being Henry - The Fonz . . . and Beyond by Henry Winkler
Henry Winkler, launched into prominence by his role as ‘The Fonz’ in the beloved TV
series Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny
and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first
to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s just really grateful to be there), Henry
shares, in the achingly vulnerable memoir, the disheartening truth of his childhood,
the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a
life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.
Today, Henry’s revealed himself as an actor with immense depth and pathos, a
departure from the period in his life when he was so distinctly typecast as The Fonz
he could hardly find work. Filled with profound heart, charm and self-deprecating
humour, this memoir is about so much more than a life in Hollywood and the curse
of stardom. It is a meaningful testament to the power of sharing truth and kindness,
and of finding fulfilment within yourself.
Mad on Meth
How New Zealand got hooked on P by Benedict Collins
Why cook at home when you can order in? Only 50 years ago, pure
methamphetamine was legally prescribed in New Zealand to anyone looking for
a boost. But it wasn’t long before P was rebranded as the most dangerous and
destructive drug in the world - and New Zealanders cemented as among its biggest
users. With dry wit and biting insight, journalist Benedict Collins takes us inside the
evolution of meth in New Zealand. From ram raids for pseudoephedrine to our own
cooks and gangs ‘breaking bad’, a visit to the Golden Triangle of meth production in
South-East Asia, multimillion-dollar busts, and a moral panic that seeded a methtesting
scandal. All set the stage for unthinkable crimes and drug-fuelled mania, but
also serviced a hidden world of white-collar users - and cemented New Zealand’s
reputation as among the biggest meth consumers in the world. How did tough on
crime become dumb on drugs? And what does a solution to Pure addiction look like?
A Head Full of Music
The soundtrack to my life by Cliff Richard
Foreword by Bob Stanley On a sunny Saturday morning in May 1956, a fifteen-year-old,
then called Harry Webb, was mooching down Waltham Cross High Street. He heard
some music blaring out of a parked car. It stopped him in his tracks. The song was
‘Heartbreak Hotel’ by Elvis Presley. It sounded like nothing he had ever heard before.
In that instant, the schoolboy who was destined to take the hit parade by storm as
Cliff Richard fell in love with rock and roll. It gave him the thrill, the purpose and the
mission that has shaped his life ever since. Cliff lives in and for music. And with 65
years as a hitmaker, the music filling his head is a broad category. His soundtrack
begins by blasting us all back into that first life-changing explosion of rock This
book is meaningful to Cliff on many levels. The 30 or so songs here that make up the
soundtrack to his life have each moved him deeply, but it’s also about the legendary
artists he met, and often got to know. This book is a vibrant personal journey for Cliff,
and it’s a joy to accompany him on it. Get wired for sound with him and read on.
Medical centre work
an ‘expected challenge’
WE ARE ON THE
MOVE AGAIN...
• By Dylan Smits
GROUNDWORK has started
for upgrades to the Diamond
Harbour Medical Centre, with
the help of volunteers.
Thanks to a $50,000 grant
from the city council, the centre
has reached 93 per cent of its
funding goal and can start
preparing for construction
work.
Volunteers have been busy
installing a shed for construction
work and starting to fell the
large trees on site, but major
construction is unlikely to start
until the new year due to the
timing of the funding milestone,
said centre health support group
president Gay Pavelka.
This is due to health and safety
concerns for the attendees at the
nearby community hall holiday
events.
Pavelka said construction also
has to work around opening
hours of the medical centre itself.
“It’s an expected challenge and
we can work around it.”
The medical centre is now
more than 30 years old and needs
upgrading to meet the needs of
the aging community.
The clinic currently serves an
older demographic with 22 per
cent over 65, and 60 per cent
aged between 40 and 50.
Pavelka said the building lacks
many of the features required of
a modern medical facility.
“These deficiencies were
TO A NEW LOCATION IN
FERRYMEAD, DUE TO
EARTHQUAKE REPAIRS
sharply illuminated by the
Covid-19 pandemic.”
The main purpose of the
upgrade is to create more
space for doctors and nurses to
conduct their practice.
The upgrades include new
nurses rooms and a staff room.
“We’ve only got one doctors
room at the moment and there’s
a shortage of space for nurses to
work. There’s a pretty dreadful
shortage,” said Pavelka.
Pavelka is also thankful for
support from local organisations
ALMOST THERE:
The Diamond
Harbour Medical
Centre has reached
93 per cent of
its $670,000
goal needed
to upgrade the
facility.
its $670,000 total funding goal.
“We are immensely thankful
to those that have seen the
vision and got right in behind
supporting the hard work our
committee and support partners
are putting in,” said Pavelka.
The centre has received
$80,000 from the Hugo
Charitable Trust, $30,000 from
the Maurice Carter Charitable
Trust, $25,000 from the Lyttelton
Port Company and $20,000 from
the Rata Foundation.
While construction can now
begin, the centre still needs to
raise an additional $50,000 to
fund the entire upgrade.
Talk on preparing
for tsunamis
• By Dylan Smits
TSUNAMI preparedness talks
will be held tonight in Sumner.
Civil Defence emergency
management will give a presentation
on the science behind
tsunamis and what to do in an
evacuation.
Community
resilience
co-ordinator
Sarah Cornall
Sarah Cornall
will lead the
presentation
at the Matuku
Takotako
Sumner Centre
from 7-8pm,
followed by
audience questions.
The talk is hosted by the
Sumner Residents’ Association.
Information will be provided
on how to check if you live in an
evacuation risk zone, with the
Redcliffs Residents’ Association
in attendance to help people
navigate the evacuation risk map
found online.
Association secretary Pat
McIntosh said she wants to use
the event to help Redcliffs residents
identify exactly what zone
they are in.
“We want to be able to give
all the right advice to people
individually,” she said.
Evacuation risk zones are
separated into red, orange and
yellow categories.
The red zone is the area most
likely to be affected by a tsunami,
but mostly covers rivers,
estuaries and the ocean itself.
Most residential areas on the
coast are in the orange evacuation
zone. This includes Sumner,
Redcliffs and other nearby
coastal areas.
Civil Defence advice is to
leave this zone immediately if
you experience a long or strong
earthquake, see sudden sea level
changes or receive an official
warning from civil defence in
person or through text.
Sumner Residents’ Association
and Hub co-ordinator Charlie
Hudson said the association is
eager to help spread awareness
of tsunami risk in the area.
“There’s been a lot of a bigger
emphasis on preparedness
over the past couple of years.
We are really aware of our
vulnerabilities.”
• You can check risk
zones at https://www.
NEWS
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Children’s centre lacks
essential funds to help
CHOLMONDELEY Children’s
Centre has seen demand for
its services climb as the cost of
living bites.
The centre in Governors
Bay provides free respite care
for children and support for
families.
Centre general manager Toni
Tinirau said in recent years there
has been a constant demand for
its services.
She said there were “countless
weekly phone inquiries” and a
current wait list of 51 children.
In the 2022-2023 financial year
351 children from 295 families
accessed the centre’s facilities. It
was an increase on the 2021-2022
financial year which saw 331
children from 267 families, and
the 2020–2021
year with 318
children from
229 families.
Said Tinirau:
“The need for
our services
hasn’t gone away,
Toni Tinirau
it’s grown. And
as the cost of
living puts more
pressure on whānau doing it
tough, it’s only natural there’ll be
more demand.”
The centre has 23 beds to stay
overnight and on average only 17
of these beds are occupied.
“It’s my dream to have every
one of those 23 beds filled every
night. But it’s just not achievable
at the moment because we
don’t have the funding or the
resources.
“The space is there, the
demand is there, we are just
lacking the consistent financial
support. It’ll cost an additional
estimated $250,000 annually
to have all 23 beds filled every
night,” said Tinirau.
Cholmondeley costs $2.8
million to run each year with
20 per cent covered by the
Government. The remaining 80
per cent is generated through
community fundraising.
Said Tinirau: “We have been
looking really closely at how to
raise the much needed funds
for Cholmondeley as it’s been a
difficult time globally to raise
funds for charities.”
She said children are given
round-the-clock care, outdoor
experiences, learning activities
designed to build wellbeing
and resilience, and a fun
environment where they are only
asked “to be kids”.
“The support Cholmondeley
provides doesn’t stop when
tamariki turn 12. It also has the
‘Awhi Team’ (care team) made up
of social workers, youth workers
and whānau ora navigators who
walk alongside whānau in their
own homes to address issues
they’re facing.
“We support tamariki coming
from homes where there
could be issues with health,
accommodation, interpersonal
relationships, single-parent
whānau, family violence,
family harm, mental health or
addiction.
“We just need Cantabrians’
help. Do not underestimate the
level of support you can provide
a charity like Cholmondeley.
Never think that you could never
give enough, because whatever
you can do, however you can
support us, will certainly help
our whānau,” she said.
TALENTED: Wananga Weavers with their creation Te
Whetū Kirihimete – Christmas Stars.
O’ Christmas tree
PASSIONATE crafters have
transformed the Okains Bay
Museum into a sparkling
holiday display.
In its third annual
Christmas at the Museum
exhibition, there are 14 themed
displays.
Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s
student weavers will showcase
Te Whetū Kirihimete –
Christmas Stars; two woven
masterpieces inspired by their
learning and friendships.
There will also be Pacific
Ebb & Flow, which is an
installation by Pioneer
Crafters, a group of friends
who met through exercise
classes.
Said Riley: “From paracord
and clay, to shells and
driftwood, the creativity on
display is as diverse as the
community itself.
“Each piece reflects the
unique spirit of its creators,
weaving a tapestry of festive
joy throughout the museum.”
The exhibition runs at the
museum until January 13.
Tips for a Safe Summer and Festive Season from Kōwhai Vet
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and at Kōwhai Vet
Clinic, we want to make sure your furry family
members join in the merriment safely. The
holidays bring an array of festive foods and
decorations that can pose potential hazards to
our pets. Here’s a reminder of some things to
look out for to keep your four-legged friends
healthy and happy throughout the Christmas
celebrations and summer season…
Chocolate: Keep Dogs Away from the
Dark Side
While chocolate is a delightful treat for us, it
contains theobromine and caffeine that can be
highly toxic to pets. The darker the chocolate the
higher the levels of these substances. Keep all
chocolate goodies, including decorations and gift
wrappings, out of paws’ reach to prevent accidental
ingestion.
Christmas Cake: Not Such a Merry Christmas Treat for
Pets
Raisins, commonly found in Christmas cakes, can be
harmful to dogs, leading to kidney failure.
If your festive spread includes fruitcakes, ensure they are
stored securely, and keep a watchful eye on your pet to
avoid any unwanted snacking. Fresh grapes can be equally
harmful.
Christmas Lilies: A Blooming Catastrophe for Cats
While the beauty of lilies enhances our homes during the
holidays, they are highly toxic to cats.
Ingesting any part of the plant can cause kidney failure.
If you suspect your cat has come into contact with lilies,
contact your vet promptly.
Christmas Decorations: Pretty, but Potentially Perilous
Ornaments, tinsel, and festive lights can attract the
attention of playful pets. Ingesting these decorations can
lead to choking or intestinal blockages. Keep a watchful
eye on your furry friends and consider pet-proofing your
decorations.
Christmas Ham and High-Fat Foods: A Recipe for
Tummy Troubles
While it’s tempting to share your festive feast with your
pet, over-indulgence in high-fat foods like Christmas ham
can cause tummy upsets or even lead to a nasty bout of
pancreatitis. Stick to pet-friendly treats and avoid giving in
to those pleading eyes at the dinner table.
Barbecue Meats with Bones: A Choking Hazard
While indulging in a festive barbecue, it pays to keep half
an eye out for crafty canines hoping to snaffle a sneaky
snack from the feast. Cooked bones can splinter or pieces
of bone can be swallowed whole and can cause serious
internal injuries or blockages in your pet’s digestive
system. Corn cobs and kebab skewers are another
barbecue hazard so dispose of bones and other leftovers
safely and monitor your pet during outdoor gatherings.
Onions and Garlic: Could All End in Tears
Onions and garlic, common ingredients in many meals,
contain compounds that can damage a pet’s red blood
cells, leading to anemia. Ensure all leftovers are kept away
from inquisitive noses to avoid accidental ingestion.
Hops for Home Brew: Not for Furry Friends
For those enjoying home brewing, be aware that the
hops can be toxic to dogs. Ingestion can lead to increased
temperature, rapid breathing, and even death. Ensure
brewing supplies are stored securely away from pets.
Grass Seeds: A Pesky Problem for Paws
Everyone loves getting out for summertime walks, but be
sure to check your dog’s coat for grass seeds when you get
home. Pay particular attention to paws and ears where
these pesky seed heads have a habit of penetrating.
The team at Kōwhai Vet Clinic wishes everyone a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to
welcoming you and your furry companions in good health
in the coming year.
May your holidays be filled with joy, warmth, and the
delightful presence of your beloved pets.
Stay safe and have a Pawsitively wonderful Christmas!
P.S. We will be closed for the Christmas and New Year
Sliding door playing up?
Don’t replace it... repair it!
Do your sliding doors no longer glide?
With the right know-how, tools, high
quality spare and specialist replacement
parts - these doors can be repaired to as
good or better than new for a fraction of
the cost of replacing the door.
Sliding Door Specialists Ltd can fix the
problem.
Owned and operated by Stewart Poole,
Sliding Door Specialists Ltd has been
operating across Canterbury for the past
15 years.
From retro 70s through to newer design
doors, they are experts in repairing all
types of home and business sliding doors.
“Over time, the rollers underneath
become worn or broken. The door
becomes heavy, hard to slide and very
noisy. And often the lock and handle will
not work any more,” explains Stewart. “We
don’t sell new doors, we repair existing
doors and our mobile service can often
have your door sliding better than new in
less than 2 hours.”
Shrieking, rumbling and stubbornly
sticky doors are the most common
complaints and according to Stewart
are mostly due to worn roller units and
damaged tracks.
For ease of opening Single Glazed
Doors generally require a standard
two-roller carriage replacement, while
it is recommended to install a double
four-roller carriage for heavier Double
Glazed Doors. This assists ease of opening
because there are four rollers taking the
weight.
“As many doors are 20 or 30 years old
we recommend replacing damaged tracks
with a new stainless steel “Magic Track
Cover”. Stainless steel is much harder and
smoother than the old aluminium track
and makes the door slide beautifully.”
To ensure doors are safe and secure,
Sliding Door Specialists also carry and
array of locks and handles for both
old and new fixtures. They also carry
special safety latches for swimming pool
enclosures.
Former banker now cuts a track
on Motukarara racecourse
Victoria Bryant is the
track manager at
Motukarara racecourse.
Dave Di Somma
catches up with her
IN A SHORT space of time
Victoria Bryant has come a long
way.
In her words the former banker
“fell into” her job as the track
manager at the Mot racecourse
and now can’t imagine working
anywhere else.
“This is my fourth season now,
it is a real job and I really love it,”
she said.
“I couldn’t even put the PTOs
on a tractor when I started.”
Now, the routine of hitching
up the blades and manicuring
the more than 1800m of track is
about as second nature as it gets.
“There’s a bit of real estate
alright. What I would call a race
day mow can take anywhere
between five and five and a half
hours.”
She had no formal qualifications
or training before taking
up the job, though she’s always
been round horses. A competitive
rider for many years she still
has four horses at her property in
Ladbrooks.
“I lost my job (in the bank) due
to Covid and the track manager
here had resigned and my dad
(Geoff) was on the committee.
I was doing some mowing and
helping out when someone said I
should go for the job.”
Along the way she’s learnt a
lot and had support and help
from people like Harness Racing
New Zealand’s track and venue
inspector John Denton; Kevin
McClintock, who’s a key part of
the team at Addington Raceway;
her part-time helper at Motukarara,
Ben Skelton; and the late
trainer-driver, Murray Edmonds.
“I think about Murray every
day I’m out there – he was great
and we used to have a few laughs
too!”
It’s believed Bryant is the only
woman to be the dedicated track
manager at a harness racing
venue in New Zealand, not that
she puts too much store into that.
“Anybody can do anything as
long as you are prepared to put
the work in.
“I’m not trying to be a hero,
I’m doing a job and I didn’t see
myself here, but I am here and
I’m loving it.
“But I couldn’t do what I do at
Mot without the amazing help
and support looking after my son
Roux from my mum and dad
(Wendy and Geoff).”
Unlike some of her thoroughbred
racing counterparts, Bryant
doesn’t use penetrometers or
other fancy equipment, relying
more on “feel”.
“Commonsense is a big part of
it plus asking a lot of questions. I
BALANCE: Despite not having any formal training
in the field, Bryant’s personal experience with
horses helped her land the job. Now, knowing
where and how much to water the grass is second
nature to her.
now know every square metre of
that track and can tell how much
water it needs, and where,” she
said.
It’s all about striking a balance.
Said Bryant: “Ideally you want
a track that is good for the horses
with a bit of give in it but not
enough so the track gets too cut
up. The soil is very sandy and
generally drains well as long as it
doesn’t get too saturated.”
While Bryant has been widely
praised for the racing surface
and the way Motukarara looks
on race day, it has given her
challenges.
In November last year the race
meeting was cancelled because
of surface water in the middle
of the track just by the winning
post.
“I felt I let the club down but
really it was out of anyone’s control,
there’d been something like
28mm of rain overnight.”
In contrast, at last year’s
December meeting it was “35
degrees and stinking hot.”
“But it’s easier to irrigate a dry
track. Wet is trickier for sure.”
In recent weeks Bryant has had
some tight turnarounds with
the Banks Peninsula Trotting
Club meeting on November 26
followed by the Akaroa Trotting
Club meeting on December 2.
“So that was two meetings in
six days . . . we did the assessment
after the first meeting, then
there was mowing, repairing
divots and other manual repairs,
plus the irrigation . . . it was all
go.”
Right now is peak hour for
Bryant, with the December 29
meeting by far the biggest of the
year. It can attract up to 8000
people on course.
“During the busiest times of
the season I can work 14-16 days
straight and then during the
winter sometimes all it takes is
10 hours per week.
“But even when I’m not
working I’m often thinking
about it!”
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Lyttelton Harbour Board’s cool store
ABOUT JANUARY 5, 1905 in
the port of Lyttelton, 3486 boxes
of South Island butter, totalling
1743 hundredweight (CWT)
or 88.5 tonnes, along with 185
cases of fine Canterbury cheese,
weighing an additional 214 CWT
(1.1 tonne), were unpacked from
the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s
cool store adjacent to the railyard
between No 6 and No 7 wharves.
The cheese crates each
contained two round cheeses
separated by a board, giving
strength to the case. Being round
the cases could be rolled on the
edge of the base like a barrel. The
lengthwise boards featured slight
gaps for ventilation, allowing
testers to insert tubes for core
samples. This testing regime was
required to both grade the cheese
and ensure it was at a stable temperature
of around 7 deg C while
in cool storage before being
loaded for transport.
Hauled by LHB workers onto
flatbed rail cars, which were then
drawn by the railway workers’
horses onto the wharf, the cheeses
were loaded into the refrigerated
hold of the SS Ruapehu,
operated by the New Zealand
Shipping Company, destined
for the London markets. This
refrigerated dairy trade with the
motherland was an economic
boon for the Dominion of New
Zealand.
Almost a decade later, by
April 1914, the quantity of butter
awaiting export in port-side
cool stores around the country
totalled 88,062 boxes (2237
tonnes), a year on year increase
of 37 per cent, reflecting the
huge growth in New Zealand’s
early 20th century export dairy
industry. This growth was made
possible by the invention and
industrial use of mechanical
refrigeration just three decades
earlier.
The ancient world, from the
Romans to the Persians and
Chinese, harvested and stored
ice for their refrigeration needs,
and also used evaporative cooling.
These methods continued
well into the 19th century until
innovations in steam-driven
compressed gas refrigeration
technology proved their profitability.
The Australasian colonies
of the British Crown were at the
forefront of this technological
drive due to the need to trade
frozen meat and dairy products,
with their biggest markets on the
other side of the planet.
Queenslander Thomas
McIlwraith delivered the first
shipment of 40 tonnes of unspoilt
frozen Australian beef
and mutton to London in 1879
using a patented ‘Bell-Coleman’
gas refrigeration unit on board
the Strathleven.
Then in 1882, Scotsmen
Davidson and Brydone managed
New Zealand’s inaugural
shipment of 4909 frozen mutton
and lamb carcasses from Totara
Estate near Oamaru, on
board the Dunedin out of Port
Chalmers to London, marking a
pivotal moment for the colony’s
struggling economy.
This achievement, coupled
with subsequent profitable voyages,
laid the foundation for the
worldwide refrigerated shipping
industry, transforming New
Zealand’s economy by making
frozen meat and dairy exports a
cornerstone of the colony’s late
19th into 20th-century economic
prosperity.
In 1889, the Canterbury
Frozen Meat and Dairy Produce
Export Company opened the
Belfast Freezing Works for meat
due for export out of Lyttelton
port. In 1890, the LHB’s committee
on cool chambers suggested
repurposing the port’s grain
agency shed as a cool store,
and urged the Government to
appoint an expert for butter and
cheese inspection in Canterbury.
The export of dairy produce
out of Lyttelton port in 1889
was worth £52,473 ($17 million
NZD), but it was believed to be a
fraction of the Canterbury dairy
industry’s potential.
In early 1891, the LHB decided
spending £5000 ($1.6 million
NZD) on a cool store for the
Lyttelton port would accelerate
the industry’s growth, even if the
returns on the investment were
not immediately apparent.
The development of the cool
store was accelerated when in
July 1891, The Grocer, a prominent
trade journal in the United
Kingdom, expressed serious
concerns about the condition of
New Zealand butter and cheese
during long voyages, advocating
for quarantine measures and
proper cool-chamber conditions,
otherwise the “dairying industry
in New Zealand is threatened
with partial, if not complete,
collapse!”
By June 30, 1893, a storage rate
of 1s 6d per imperial tonne was
in effect at the newly built Lyttelton
Harbour Board cool store for
handling produce destined for
the rapidly growing refrigerated
export market.
Almost a quarter of a century
later in 1916, the Public Works
Department announced the
imminent activation of an electrical
substation at the cool store.
Plans for electrifying the town
followed, with an initial phase
providing electricity from Norwich
Quay through to London
St, up Canterbury and Oxford
Sts to Winchester, Dublin and
Exeter Sts, at a capital outlay of
£750 ($164,000 NZD).
Thus it was that a modernised
cool store helped extinguish
Lyttelton’s gas lamps and usher
in the electric 20th century.
forward. It is an exciting new year for us to
look forward to as our kura turns 70 years old.
But before we move into all the iterations and
innovations the new year will bring us, we would
like to appreciate some of the wonderful things
our ākonga have accomplished this year.
Scholarship recipients Mark Lemon, Destiny
Martin, Connor Armstrong, Jason Prakash,
Imogen Donnelly and Mae Ibo
At our Senior Prizegiving, we celebrated
the extraordinary achievement of our senior
scholarship winners. These deserving students
demonstrated the values of the scholarship
requirements across several universities:
academic achievement, resilience, leadership,
excellence, cultural contributions, social
engagement, overcoming adversity, and many
other indicators. Our students were thoroughly
deserving of financial and personal support, and
these scholarships will provide an amazing boost
as they kickstart their tertiary journey. With the
fees, cash, catered accommodation, summer
school programmes and mentoring support, the
photo from our Prizegiving Evening represents
over $70,000 that universities have invested in Te
Aratai College students for their future pathways -
an amazing achievement.
Kindness Collective, a volunteer group of ākonga
who collected litter around the school grounds,
oversaw positive affirmations written by students
for their peers and acknowledged school staff
for their hard mihi. The group was also featured
in national news media for their initiative at the
Aldwins House retirement home, regularly visiting
residents to kōrero or play pool, embracing the
goodwill in their community.
This year we also saw five learners participate
in “Word: The Front Line Ōtautahi,” a spoken
word poetry slam. This was the first time the
competition was held in the South Island, held at
The Piano Event Center in August. The night was
full of amazing orator-performers from 5 different
schools who explored a variety of topics like
identity, diversity, rugby and Shakespeare. The Te
Aratai team performers practised hard, attending
weekend workshops to make sure their poems
were interesting, catchy, and most importantly
“felt.” It was an extraordinary night to be part of
with incredibly moving and provocative poetry
performed by so many young, talented poets from
across Ōtautahi-Christchurch.
Blake Williams, Connor Armstrong and
Thomas Rhoades in the YES Dragon’s Den
In our business school, we saw the success of
an inspiring business venture, spearheaded by
a group of Te Aratai College students. “Decalify”
was an entrepreneurial endeavour that made an
impressive impact with its cultural window decal
designs and fully youth-run business model.
Throughout the year the business team were
placed 1st in the Canterbury Young Enterprise
Dragon’s Den event, successfully awarded
the contract to place all the window decals on
Kindness Foundation’s (Previously YMCA) new
$44 million building on Rolleston Avenue, and
awarded 1st Place Finance, 1st Place Enterprise
Technology, and 2nd Place Rangatahi New
Zealand Young Enterprise in the In Canterbury
Young Enterprise Competition.
On the sports field, Te Aratai and the Under 14
Boys’ Rugby team had a historic season in 2023.
This group of young men ended up being graded
in the top division of Under 14 Boys’ Rugby,
Division One, Section One. From there, the group
did two special things; beating Christ’s College
to win the Challenge Cup which is essentially
the Ranfurly Shield of the Under 14 division, and
then defending this until the end of the season
and earning the right to have Te Aratai College
engraved on it for the first time. They also then
finished top of the table after the round robin
and beat Christchurch Boys’ High and Christ’s
College on the way to winning the final of Division
One, Section One. Te Aratai College is the first
co-educational school to achieve this.
To us all, whatever 2024 brings for each one of
us, and it will be different for me too, ngā mihi
nui and best wishes for the festive season and
summer ahead. I leave this school so enriched
by everything that I have been able to learn from
you all over the years on my own pathway to the
College.
no different. 2023 has been a
challenging yet rewarding year
for them.
One highlight was the
scholarships and awards
programme; the calibre of the
applicants was outstanding so
it made the decision making
process more challenging for the
trustees.
“Because of our generous
sponsors, we will be running this
programme again in 2024,” said
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
chair Martin Hawes.
“Most of our sponsors are
local people and businesses, and
many continue their support over
successive years.
“Applications will open at the
beginning of January and the
forms will be on our website.
Traditionally the academic
scholarships have been for second
year students but this year we
have widened the applications
to all students except first year
REFLECT: The Sumner Ferrymead Foundation’s three new trustees Andrew Clark (left),
Noah Lewis and Sarah Angelo.
students. Plus, the scope of
our apprentice award has been
widened to include anyone
undertaking an accredited
apprenticeship.”
Another highlight for the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
was three new trustees. Both
Noah Lewis and Sarah Angelo
are former recipients of the academic
scholarships, and Andrew
Clark’s daughter was a recipient
of an academic scholarship too.
“The foundation describes itself
as locals helping locals,” said
Noah Lewis.
“And it goes full circle. We have
all benefited from the support it
provides and now it is our turn to
give back.”
The Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation is always looking for
trustees so if you are interested,
contact them either directly or
through their website.
Like many charities, the biggest
challenge the foundation faces is
fundraising, and in a time where
the cost of living is the topic of
conversation it has become even
harder.
“There are so many ways in
which people can help,” said
treasurer Max Mathias.
“It might be a one off donation,
or a monthly commitment. Or,
you might want to sponsor an
award or event. And of course,
there is the option to leave a
bequest in your will. Please do
make contact if you think you
could help us make our community
an even better place to live.”
2024 brings exciting new
opportunities. This year the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
celebrated 30 years, so the trustees
have agreed to donate up to
$30,000 to community groups
and organisations within the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
catchment area.
“30 years is quite a milestone,
and until recently one of the original
trustees, Julie Cunningham,
was very much involved. That
gives you an idea of the level
of commitment our trustees
place on the foundation’s role in
supporting the community,” said
Hawes.
“The grants for community
groups will complement the
scholarships and awards programme
which has more of an
individual focus.”
Applications will be sent out
in the first quarter of 2024. If for
any reason your organisation
does not receive one, please
contact the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation.
Biggest BMW yet built for distance
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
THOSE WHO love large super
‘size-me’ luxury European SUVs
will have their appetites satisfied
with the updated X7, the biggest
BMW on the planet, with an
equally stupendous price.
This time around if offers an
expanded range of standard
equipment and driver assistance
features, plus some subtle styling
changes, to help distract from
the fact that this model has been
around since 2019.
For our market two models
are available starting with the
$177,990 xDrive40d twin turbo
diesel provided for this road test.
Ownership is well north of that
figure for the high performance
flagship X7 M60i xDrive. Fitted
with a barn storming ‘big beastie’
4.4-litre twin turbo V8, it sports
an equally beefy $224,900 asking
price. Both models attract the
highest government clean car
fee of $6900, adding to the
purchasing pain of would-be
owners.
Styling changes are low-key
and unlikely to be recognised
by all except the most devout
X7 aficionados. The chrome bar
connecting the rear light units
is enclosed within a streamlined
glass cover. Optional 23-inch
light-alloy wheels are first for
a BMW model and perfect
for filling the vehicle’s gaping
wheel arches, when it’s shod
with smaller wheels. Styling
is unashamedly traditional
BMW. The front-end features
a modest revamp of the twin
circular headlights separated by
the company’s signature kidney
style grille. New matrix LED
headlights offer non-dazzling
high beam and adaptive light
distribution, while the front fog
lights are automatically activated
in bad weather and poor light.
The test vehicle’s 3.0 litre
in-line twin turbo diesel V6 is
the first BMW sold here with
48-volt mild hybrid technology
for improved fuel economy and
lower emissions. The maximum
output of the overall drive system
is 259kW, and a healthy 700Nm
of torque that increases to 720Nm
when the mild hybrid system
chips in. This latest modest form
of electrification comprises a
crankshaft-mounted starter
generator integrated into the
transmission and contributes an
additional 9kW of power.
The power train is supremely
smooth with negligible road or
engine noise in both town and
open road driving. For its size
and bulk it can shift itself in a
hurry with a claimed 0-100 km/h
sprint time of 5.6 seconds. Where
it really excels is effortlessly
scything through long distances
like few other vehicles I have road
tested. If high mileage point-to
point motoring makes up a
sizeable chunk of your driving,
and you want to do it in a vehicle
that’s imposing, powerful,
superbly appointed and exudes
quality, the X7 delivers.
An eight-speed transmission
with steering wheel-mounted
gearshift panels does a masterful
job of channelling the motor’s
considerable power and torque
on to the road, via BMW’s proven
xDrive all-wheel drive system.
I never felt the need to dabble
with the paddle shifter. On this
vehicle, this is largely rendered
obsolete by the X7’s excellent
automatic that offers the driver
no compelling reason to paddle
through the gears in search of a
more exhilarating drive.
The huge and lavishly
appointed cabin can be enjoyed
across three rows of seats.
BMW’s Live Cockpit Plus in
the new X7 is based on the
company’s Operating System
8 and integrates nearly into a
curved display, formed by a large
information and control displays.
These days iDrive is geared
towards touch operation and
gesture control as well as voice
activation. At times it seems
overly complicated – technology
for technology’s sake.
There’s more on-board comfort
and luxury in this updated model
with four-zone automatic climate
control, panoramic glass sunroof,
and comfort seats reserved
for the driver and front seat
passenger.
BMW’s Connected Drive
assistance system offers a
Driving Assistant safety package
comprising Lane Departure and
Collision Warning Systems. New
features include the extended
range of functions offered by
the front-collision warning
system, which now also reduces
the danger of a collision with
cyclists, pedestrians or oncoming
vehicles. An exit warning
function alerts occupants to
the risk of a collision when
opening the door. Parking
Assistant Professional includes
an advanced Reversing Assistant
that can now steer the vehicle
for up to 200 metres. It removes
the stress of backing out of long
driveways you wished you had
never ventured down in a vehicle
of this size. It’s great watching
the expressions of onlookers
anticipating a backing disaster,
when you make the job look so
easy, and they’re unaware it was
all technological slight of hand,
not your sublime reversing skills.
The adaptive two-axle air
suspension is standard with
electronically controlled dampers
to deliver superior comfort on
long journeys. All chassis systems
have been retuned for this take
on the X7, raising the already
lofty bar the previous model
set for handling and driving
comfort. It’s supported on this
front by an expanded selection of
automated driving systems.
In everyday motoring, the
electronically controlled full
time four-wheel system drive
dispatches over half of the
engines power to the rear wheels.
The remainder is directed to
the front wheels. Over twisty
terrain body roll is confidently
controlled.
The test vehicle even with its
additional height and weight is
remarkably nimble and pleasant
but not unexpected, after all it’s
a BMW.
Slick and intelligently managed
ride and handling can be
explored and enjoyed by direct
and communicative steering,
although a bit on the light side
for my tastes. Limited ground
clearance rules out tackling
genuinely demanding crosscountry
terrain. A low-slung
front end is a likely target for
protrusions such as rocks and
tree stumps. However, this isn’t
the sort of place an X7 owner
is ever going to nose their king
SUV pride and joy into.
