A TEENAGER who high-fived
a friend after fatally kicking
a stranger to the head with a
martial-arts style manoeuvre in
the central city has been released
from prison and placed on home
detention.
Mark Nagel, 19, appeared in the
High Court at Christchurch yesterday
where he was resentenced
to five months of home detention
on an admitted charge of manslaughter
following the death of
Tony Kelly.
The 61-year-old died after being
kicked in the face on October 18
last year.
In October this year, Nagel was
jailed for two years on the manslaughter
charge but granted leave
to apply for home detention by
Justice Rachel Dunningham.
Nagel also spent five months in
custody before he was sentenced.
In hearing the teen’s application
for home detention, which was
opposed by the Crown, Justice
Dunningham said he had completed
a variety of personal development
courses while locked up
and had undergone counselling.
She believed his time behind
bars was enough deterrence and
denunciation to warrant him
being granted home detention.
THE GOOD news is food
prices in New Zealand fell in
November. But the bad news is
they were still a whopping 6 per
cent higher than a year earlier.
“The largest contribution to
the annual change was grocery
food, mainly driven by higher
prices for fresh eggs, lollies, and
peanuts,” Stats NZ consumers
prices manager James Mitchell
said yesterday.
A MOTORWAY through
Hagley Park, a 167m high tower
in Victoria Square and a canal
from the estuary up to a new
port near Lancaster Park.
These are just some of the
outlandish ideas that never got
off the ground.
They’re explored in
Unfinished Business, a new
exhibition at Tūranga, cocurated
by librarians Annette
Williams and Glenn Coster.
Other ditched proposals
commissioned tram carriage to
Food prices have now fallen
for three consecutive months.
The fruit and vegetables
group was the largest contributor
to the monthly fall, driven
by seasonal price drops for
tomatoes, capsicums, and
strawberries.
“We are seeing more food
items fall in price than a year
ago,” Mitchell said.
“In November 2023, 46 per
act as a hearse for funerals of
tram-travelling mourners, and a
concrete rock built in the sea off
New Brighton to rival Sumner’s
Cave Rock.
Pitched by a group of
businessmen in 1987, the
Victoria Square Tower would
have been three times the height
of the Christ Church Cathedral
spire.
Drawings show a revolving
restaurant and observation
gallery at the top.
The city council of the time
agreed to the idea in principle,
cent of food items fell in price,
while in November 2022, 27 per
cent of items decreased.”
But the year-on-year increase
was due to price rises across the
five broad food categories that
Stats NZ measured.
Price movements for the 12
months to November 2023,
in order of their contribution
to the overall movement,
were as follows:
Grandiose proposals
that never made it
NO GO: A motorway through Hagley Park. Left – Victoria
Square Tower architect Sir Miles Warren (front) with
planning commissioners Dame Ann Hercus, Ken Nairn
and Clinton Roper. Both proposals were abandoned.
but the proposal was rejected
by independent planning
commissioners following fiery
opposition from residents.
Said Williams: “Any new
projects inevitably attract
controversy – and the tower
certainly drew some vociferous
opposition.”
A project to build a motorway
through the hallowed grounds
of Hagley Park made it as far as
early excavation work, which
started in March 1970.
Days later work was halted,
after advice the city council
• Grocery food, up 7.0 per
cent
• Restaurant meals and readyto-eat
food prices, up 7.5 per
cent
• Fruit and vegetable prices,
up 4.8 per cent
• Non-alcoholic beverage
prices, up 5.8 per cent
• Meat, poultry, and fish
prices, up 2.0 per cent.
was acting outside the law
and needed the permission of
the Minister of Lands. It was
suggested the dumped project
cost Mayor Ron Guthrey his job
the following year.
“In our roles as librarians we
often stumble upon interesting
local history stories and
sometimes these evolve into
ideas for exhibitions or events,”
the co-curators said.
Tight vote
in assets
debate
LEFT LEANING city councillors
have claimed victory in the
contentious debate over whether
public owned assets should be
sold or partly sold off.
The council voted 8-7 yesterday
not to develop a business case into
ceding control of assets to investment
company Christchurch City
Holdings Ltd, which oversees of
city assets valued at $5.8b.
The issue of whether to sell or
not sell is now likely to go out
for public consultation midway
through next year.
CCHL is a city council company
which owns 100 per cent
of Lyttelton Port Company, City
Care, fibre broadband provider
Enable and Eco-Central, 75 per
cent of the airport, and 89 per
cent of Orion.
Yesterday’s vote showed the
clear divide between councillors
over the issue.
Those who voted against ceding
control of assets to CCHL were
left leaning Melanie Coker, deputy
mayor Pauline Cotter, Tyrone
Fields, Tyler Harrison-Hunt, Yani
Johanson, Jake McLellan and
Andrei Moore.
Those who voted for it were
centre right leaning Mayor Phil
Mauger, Kelly Barber, James
Gough, Victoria Henstock, Aaron
Keown, Mark Peters and Tim
Scandrett.
The left leaning are arguing
the assets should stay in council
hands so dividends from the
companies continue to offset rates
rises into the future; the other
camp believes they could be managed
differently and/or sold off to
offset expected large rates rises in
the coming years.
Two councillors, Sam McDonald
and Sara Templeton, could not
vote because they are directors of
CCHL.
In September, The Star asked
readers for their views on the asset
sale debate. The overwhelmingly
response was the city’s silverware
should not be sold or partially
sold.
Speak up against drink driving, say
• By Samantha Gee
THE FAMILY of a man killed
while cycling to Christchurch
for his first grandchild’s baby
shower hopes his death serves
as a reminder of the dangers of
drink driving.
Andrew Milne was hit on State
Highway 1 north of Blenheim in
April by a car driven by Samuel
Richard Paterson, 29, who was
more than five times over the
legal limit.
Paterson was sentenced to 11
months home detention and
200 hours of community work,
ordered to pay Milne’s family
$18,000 in reparation and disqualified
from driving for three
years.
He was working as a night shift
press supervisor at a winery on
April 19, and had taken part in a
wine tasting about 2am, before
finishing his shift and driving
home towards Blenheim, shortly
before 7am.
At the same time, Milne was
cycling along State Highway 1
bound for Christchurch, having
arrived in Picton on the
Bluebridge Ferry not long after
5.30am. He was wearing a yellow
high-vis jacket and had lights on
the front and back of his helmet,
along with the front and back of
his bike.
Paterson’s vehicle crossed the
FAMILY: Andrew Milne with his twin daughters Alice and Sorrel O’Connell-Milne. Milne
the scene.
centre line several times on his
journey home, forcing oncoming
traffic to take evasive action to
avoid a collision. After exiting a
sweeping left-hand bend in the
highway, he failed to straighten
up and hit Milne’s bicycle from
behind.
Milne was thrown 40m from
where he was hit and died at the
scene as a result of injuries to his
head and spine.
His daughter, Alice O’Connell-
Milne, said she regretted inviting
her dad to her son’s baby shower,
wondering if had he not set out
on that journey, he might still be
alive.
She gave birth to Dahli weeks
after the crash and said overwhelming
grief had intruded on
the joy of motherhood.
“From my first moments of
having my son in my arms, my
grief distracted from the joy of
my new baby. I could only sob,
thinking of my dad holding me
as a baby and having loved me
and my siblings so unconditionally
the entirety of our lives.
“To not have his love and company
into the future is so deeply
unfair and inconceivable.”
Instead of celebrating her
baby’s arrival, the family was left
to organise a funeral.
‘It didn’t have to happen,
it was an unnecessary,
completely avoidable
situation’
– Alice O’Connell-Milne
“It didn’t have to happen, it
was an unnecessary, completely
avoidable situation and if (Paterson)
had made different choices,
it wouldn’t have happened,”
O’Connell-Milne said.
Her twin sister, Sorrel
O’Connell-Milne, said family was
everything to her father, who was
a talented builder and craftsman
with a love of cycling, sailing,
surfing and adventure.
“Dad has always had an adventurous
spirit and he instilled that
in us. We would go on massive
bike rides together as a family,
sometimes with just a few days
prep beforehand but he always
had safety first and that was evident
on the day (he died), five different
lights, high-vis,” she said.
The family had gone on cycling
trips across New Zealand, but
none of them had been able to
ride again since the crash, she
said.
The loss of her “loving, interested
and attentive” father had
been all-consuming and triggered
panic attacks and anxiety
that made it difficult to work.

Sorrel O’Connell-Milne
attended a restorative justice
meeting with Paterson, which
she said was tough, but gave
her a chance to tell him just
how much his behaviour had
affected their family. She said
he expressed his remorse and
was seeking help for alcohol and
drug addiction.
She asked Paterson to cycle
the stretch of road between
Picton and Blenheim so he could
imagine being in her father’s
position, and he speak publicly
about the crash to illustrate
the impact of drink driving on
others.
Paterson said he intended
to comply with the conditions
of his sentence and the
expectations of the sentencing
judge. While those conditions
were still being set by his
probation officer, he could not
comment any further.
Sorrel O’Connell-Milne said
she hoped the tragedy would
encourage people to help
others struggling with problem
drinking and support them to
make better decisions.
“No one took Sam’s keys
from him that night, it was so
preventable, this didn’t need to
happen, it is just a huge tragedy,”
she said.
“I just want all those families
with people who are struggling
with alcohol to reach out and be
there. Those friends that know
their mates drink too much just
speak up. We see it all the time,
people dying on our roads from
drunk drivers and it just needs
to stop.”
Cycling Action Network
spokesperson Patrick Morgan
said accidents like these
were heartbreaking and
avoidable.
“Everyone who is using our
streets deserves to be safe, they
deserve to get home safely
whether they are on a bike,
walking or driving,” he said.
Justice Dunningham
acknowledged he would be well
supported at the proposed home
detention address.
Nagel also faced the possibility
of being deported back to South
Africa by Immigration New
Zealand.
Conditions of Nagel’s home
detention sentence include that
he is not to consume or possess
alcohol or drugs, not enter the
central city where the offending
happened, not contact the
victims of his offending, and not
have contact with the people he
was with when he offended.
During Nagel’s sentencing,
Kelly’s son said his father would
never be able to have a pint with
him at the pub, watch him get
married or watch his grandchildren
grow up. Most importantly,
he would never be able to hug
him or tell him he loves him.
Kelly’s son said that, at 21,
people should be out with their
friends having a laugh. Instead,
he was sitting at his father’s
hospital bed, praying he would
wake up after the attack.
“A part of me will be broken
for the rest of my life,” Kelly’s
son said.
“My father was a good man
who loved life and had fun. I am
proud to be his son.”
Kelly’s brother said the family
had to make the “heart-wrenching”
decision to turn off Kelly’s
life support, stating he fought to
live up until the very end.
KICK: Mark Nagel has been resentenced to five months
home detention for killing Tony Kelly.
you for the rest of your life. You
will never escape it.”
The summary of facts stated
Kelly was at the Christchurch
Central Bus Exchange, where
he was asked by security staff to
leave about 6.15pm.
Kelly walked north on Colombo
St before walking into Cashel
Mall. Nagel and his associates
followed as they believed Kelly
had been taking photos of them
on his phone.
About 6.20pm, Nagel and
his associates began to engage
with Kelly outside Ballantynes
department store.
Kelly tried to walk away but
one of the group approached
him, causing Kelly to swing
a punch in self-defence. The
person then kicked Kelly in the
shin.
Nagel walked through the
group, approached Kelly and
kicked him in the face with his
right foot, using a martial artsstyle
kick.
Kelly immediately lost
consciousness and fell to the
ground, where his head hit the
pavement.
Nagel and his group fled back
towards the bus exchange. As
they ran, Nagel high-fived his
associate who had kicked Kelly
in the shin, before the pair left
on separate buses.
Members of the public attempted
CPR on Kelly until
emergency services arrived and
took him to hospital, where he
was put in an induced coma.
Ten days later, at 11.04am,
Kelly died from his injuries.
When questioned by police,
Nagel admitted kicking Kelly
in the face because he wanted
him to delete the photos on his
phone. Police found no evidence
that Kelly was taking photos of
the group.
Cannabis trial
to start in
care homes
• By Pierre Nixon
A MEDICINAL marijuana
company based in Christchurch
is leading New Zealand’s first
clinical trial testing medicinal
cannabis as a substitute for pain
and sleep medication in aged care
facilities.
Aether Pacific Pharmaceuticals
(under its Medical Kiwi brand) has
penned a deal with Waikato-based
aged care provider Kingswood
Healthcare to undertake the trial.
“The study aims to determine
the existence of any general
improvements in the quality of
life amongst aged care residents
caused by the use of medicinal
cannabis,” said APP chair Aldo
Miccio.
“The company is confident that
the study may unlock a new use
case for medicinal cannabis products
in place of commonly used
treatments.”
Said Kingswood Healthcare
director Rocco Pienaar: “This trial
will pave the way for the potential
introduction of an innovative care
pathway to improve quality of life
through better and more consistent
sleep patterns.”
The study is currently being
organised through APP’s
dispensary business, the Pain
Clinic.
Cricket coach
funeral funds
to be donated
to high school
David Biddick (above)
spent 25 years coaching
cricket at Riccarton
High School before
succumbing to brain
cancer. Fundraising
will now add to his
remarkable legacy.
Nicholas Jones reports
AS DAVID Biddick battled
brain cancer he made it known
that the “fuss” of a funeral was
unnecessary.
The money saved will instead
upgrade the facilities at Riccarton
High, where Biddick was
sports co-ordinator and coached
cricket for a quarter of a century.
James Biddick, one of hundreds
of former Riccarton students
coached by his dad, said he
was sports-mad, but the appeal
was deeper than results.
“He probably took more pride
in the growth of the student off
the field or outside of the sport
than the performance,” James
said.
“He’d always update me on
how the team was going, but
he’d just as often talk about how
a former student is now going
to medical school, or that someone’s
just got married, or had
kids, whatever it might be.
“Those were the bigger highlights,
I think, for him.”
David Biddick began coaching
Riccarton’s cricket teams
in 1998, and in 2000 – his son’s
final year at the school – took up
the job of sports co-ordinator.
James said his father was a
“huge people person”, whose job
never felt like work. He based
it around old-school values,
including: “If you’re going to do
something right, then make sure
you do it right”.
“He could be hard on kids that
needed to hear a hard message,
knowing that it was going to
benefit them in the long run.”
Cricket appealed for its encapsulation
of some of those life
lessons, James said.
“Being part of something bigger,
being a team member – not
everybody can bowl at the same
time, not everybody can bat at
the same time. And, on some
days, it’s not your day, either.”
His past students include Cole
McConchie, a captain of the
Canterbury cricket team and allrounder
who has played for New
Zealand.
David retired as sports coordinator
in 2018, and gave up
coaching in the months following
his diagnosis of stage four
brain cancer in December last
year.
He died on November 30, aged
76.
He is survived by wife Elizabeth
Biddick, son James and his
wife Lara Brian, his daughter
Anna Koster and her husband
Dirk Koster, and their children
Ava, 7, and Noah, 22 months.
David was clear that he didn’t
want a funeral. James’ friends
suggested raising money for his
beloved Riccarton High School,
a co-educational school lacking
the resources of Christchurch’s
more well-heeled state and private
schools.
A Givealittle was established,
aiming to raise $30,000 to
upgrade the grass cricket pitch
block, improve the playing field,
and build a viewing area for
players and spectators.
The Biddick family put in
$7500. The total is currently
over $15,000, and the messages
accompanying donations have
deeply moved the family.
“Mr Biddick was the heart
of sport at Riccarton for many
years. Our family thanks him for
his support of all students,” one
family wrote.
“An absolute legend and the
backbone of RHS sport – an incredible
man who will be greatly
missed by so many of us who
were fortunate enough to benefit
from his kindness and passion
for sport at our school,” a former
student commented.
“His life lessons went far beyond
the cricket pitch and will be
forever lasting in the generations
of cricketers that went through
RHS,” commented another.
When the pitch and field are
upgraded, an annual preseason
cricket match will be held, with
a team of old students taking on
the First XI, in memory of David
PEOPLE PERSON:
David Biddick, who
died of stage four
brain cancer on
November 30, with
his wife Elizabeth
and grandchildren
Ava Koster and
Noah Koster.
and as a way to connect different
generations from the school.
Riccarton High principal Neil
Haywood, who took the position
in 2015, said David was the sort
of above-and-beyond stalwart
who keeps sporting clubs and
schools going, volunteering
thousands of hours.
“I’d best describe him as an
absolute gentleman. Someone
who gave so much, but didn’t ask
for anything in return.”
Phil Holstein, who spent 19
years at Riccarton including as
its principal, said the loss of his
friend was hard to process.
The school’s motto is “learn
that you may be of service”, and
David epitomised that, Holstein
said – from spending hours
securing funding for sporting
uniforms, to organising trips
and helping coaches, all so his
students got the most possible
enjoyment.
“I was in awe at what he did,
all for the good of others. He was
a man of standards – he had very
high expectations for himself,
and he tried to grow that expectation
in young people.”
James, 41, has lived in the
United States for the past eight
years. A trained lawyer, he works
at the University of Notre Dame
as a student athlete career development
programme manager.
The role requires him to talk
to athletes about their profession
and possible paths after their
sports careers end.
“It’s similar to what dad was
doing. You don’t set out to follow
your parents’ path, but their
influence can push you in that
direction.”
That connection grew when he
was forced to return home about
three months ago, while a new
US visa is processed (he expects
to return in the New Year).
SPORTING FAMILY: David and Elizabeth Biddick with son
James and daughter in law Lara Brian at Notre Dame
Stadium in Indiana, US.
He took a temporary learning
assistant role at Riccarton
High, and stepped into his dad’s
old position as coach of cricket
teams, including the 1st XI.
The family visited David in
his care facility every day in the
months before his death. He
lost the ability to speak, but still
appreciated updates, including
about the cricket.
“A few weeks before he died
I said, jokingly, ‘Last game this
Saturday for the First (XI) Dad,
we’re playing at home. Would
you like to come down and have
a look?’
“He turned, and said ‘Yes.’
That was the first time he had
said anything in about a month.
“There was no way we could
take him down. But he still had
that energy . . . it really connected
with him.”
These holidays will be hard,
James said.
“It’s Christmas, which is
summertime, which is cricket
time – watching it, going down
to the nets. It’ll be weird, without
dad around.” – NZ Herald
COURT 11
Too many schooners for drink driver
JAIL: Jaymie Schooner was sentenced to two years and three months for a raft of charges
after drink driving, crashing into multiple cars and fleeing the scene. PHOTO: GETTY
• By Emily Moorhouse
A MAN who was drink driving
when he crashed into multiple
cars immediately fled the scene,
leaving behind an elderly victim
whose lungs were filling with
fluid.
A judge has blasted Jaymie
Schooner for his decision to
restart his car and flee the crash
scene, stating the 73-year-old
victim – who had to be hospitalised
for 10 days – could have
died.
Schooner appeared in the
district court on Tuesday for
sentencing on a raft of charges,
including excess breath alcohol
causing injury, dangerous driving,
failing to stop or ascertain
injury, driving while forbidden
and common assault.
Schooner’s partner and their
newborn baby were also in court.
It was Schooner’s first meeting
with his child, after being in custody,
and the judge described the
introduction as an “unfortunate
circumstance” and allowed him
to hold the baby for a short time.
The court heard that in the
early evening of August 18,
Schooner was driving along
Main North Rd.
He had suffered an injury to
his left hand and was holding
the steering wheel with his right
hand, taking it off to change
gears of the manual car.
Schooner approached an intersection
at “great speed”, changing
direction and crashing into
a van, shunting it onto the curb
and causing significant damage.
His car mounted the footpath
and he immediately started the
engine and drove off, hitting
another vehicle on his way.
When police caught up with
him, an alcohol breath test
revealed Schooner had 489
micrograms of alcohol per litre
of breath, almost double the legal
limit.
Three victims travelling in the
cars Schooner crashed into suffered
injuries, with a 73-year-old
man hospitalised for 10 days.
Judge Tony Couch told
Schooner the elderly man could
have died as fluid began to fill his
lungs while Schooner drove away
from the crash scene.
Schooner began to cry while
the judge outlined the injuries to
his victims.
A second victim was transported
to hospital with a laceration
to their head and bruising,
while a third suffered swelling
This report was produced by Open
Justice – Te Pātītī, a Public
Interest Journalism initiative
funded by NZ on Air
and soreness as a result of the
impact.
The court heard Schooner
told police he drank two cups of
coffee in an attempt to sober up
before getting behind the wheel.
Judge Couch said Schooner’s
decision to restart the car and
drive away from the scene without
helping showed a “total disregard”
for the others involved.
“The damage to the van must
have made it obvious to you
there was a real likelihood of
injury,” the judge said.
Judge Couch said if the elderly
man had been left any longer
without medical assistance he
could have died.
Schooner also faced a charge
of common assault arising from
June 2 when he barged into a
female security guard at a supermarket
and struck her in the face
with a piece of clothing when she
questioned him about stealing.
The judge sentenced Schooner
to two years and three months’
imprisonment.
As Schooner was led back into
custody, he kissed his partner
and baby before telling them he
loved them.
COURT
Manslaughter
case appeal
dismissed
• By Emily Moorhouse
A TEENAGER who killed
another teen by punching him in
the head, and then bragged about
it in a rap video posted to social
media, has failed in his bid to
reduce his prison time.
Armani Williams, 18, was
jailed for three years after
fatally punching 18-year-old
Levi Haami at the Countdown
car park on Moorhouse Ave on
December 4, 2021.
Last month, Armani took his
case to the Court of Appeal,
arguing the jail term he received
was “manifestly excessive”, but
Justices Christine French, Susan
Thomas and Sally Fitzgerald dismissed
the appeal on Monday.
“It was an unprovoked, sudden
and forceful attack to the head by
an angry and aggressive assailant
who had deliberately sought the
victim out,” the decision stated.
The decision stated that while
another judge may have given
Williams a bigger youth discount,
this did not equate to an
error being made.
The justices were satisfied
that the end sentence of three
years imprisonment was not
manifestly excessive and
Williams’ appeal was dismissed.
Man jailed for grooming young boy
• By Erin Cox
A MAN who groomed and
abused a teenage boy after he was
given accommodation during
lockdown has been jailed for
more than two years.
In July 2021, Callum Joshua
Jones, 31, developed a working
relationship with a family in
Otago, the Dunedin District
Court heard last week.
Jones lied to the family, telling
them he was 23.
As the Covid lockdown hit, the
defendant requested to stay with
the family to avoid breaching
travel restrictions. They set up a
mattress in their son’s bedroom,
leading the pair to bunk together
for about two weeks.
During that time, Jones gave
the boy a cellphone along with
access to his media-streaming
accounts, began messaging him
via social media and, over four
consecutive evenings in August
HARM: Callum Joshua
Jones has been sentenced
to two years and four
months imprisonment for
grooming and violating a
young teen.
Sports star court appearance adjourned to next year
The man – who listed his occupation
on court documents as
“athlete” – is facing two charges
in district court.
A court registrar confirmed his
appearance had been adjourned
on the papers to February. The
existing suppression order was
continued by the judge to his
next appearance.
2021, Jones straddled the boy
as he lay face down on the bed,
massaging his legs and buttocks.
He told the teenager it was
normal for adolescent boys to experiment
with one another and
floated the idea of more intimate
acts.
In winter, with the permission
of the teenager’s parents, Jones
took the boy on a ski trip. Jones
had now become a “trusted family
friend”, the court heard.
Jones told the boy the trip
would be the prime opportunity
for sexual experimentation.
Jones assured the victim that
“nobody would know” and it
would “feel good”.
The teenager gave in.
After five minutes, the boy told
Jones it hurt and he didn’t like it,
so he stopped – but not for long.
Jones “used the purchasing of
the iPhone as leverage” to persuade
him to allow further lewd
acts, court documents said.
Judge Michael Turner said the
“serious offending” had caused
significant harm to the child and
the breach of trust had fractured
the victim’s family.
Court documents state that on
November 15 the man allegedly
took a car worth $10,000 from
another person.
The charge states he took the
car “dishonestly and without
claim” but not in circumstances
amounting to theft, for which
he faces a maximum penalty of
seven years in prison.
Judge Turner said the sexual
grooming took many forms and
clearly escalated over time.
“You were gaining the trust
of the victim; you were isolating
the victim. There was no-one
the victim could turn to or seek
assistance from,” he said.
“He was dependent on you for
companionship and emotional
support. This was a highly manipulative
form of behaviour by
you.”
The court heard the teenager
had exhibited a “significant
change in behaviour” since the
encounters and blamed himself
for what Jones had done.
Jones was convicted of two
counts of sexual contact with a
child, performing an indecent
act on a young person and
grooming.
He was sentenced to two years,
four months’ imprisonment.
– Otago Daily Times
He is also accused of intentionally
damaging the car owner’s
garage door, which carries a
maximum penalty of three
months in prison or a $2000 fine.
The New Zealand Herald earlier
approached the sportsman
through a spokeswoman.
She would not comment on the
matter.
Soldier flies home from Ukraine
for Christmas, reunited with son
• By Pierre Nixon
FORMER NEW Zealand Army
soldier Shannon Dillon has made
an emotional return to family in
Christchurch after an 18-month
tour of duty fighting in war-torn
Ukraine.
After a successful Givealittle
campaign, 40-year-old
Dillon was able to raise more
than $10,000 to return home
to surprise his young son for
Christmas.
“He had been looking forward
to that hug 18 months in the
making,” Dillon said.
“Coming from so much hatred
and violence to the innocence
and joy of a happy child . . .
(as) any parent can tell you, it’s
the best thing to see your child
happy.”
Dillon, who spent four years in
the New Zealand Army infantry,
moved to Ukraine to assist in
military operations in June last
year.
“When it kicked off, it didn’t
sit right. Ukraine didn’t want
the war, they didn’t ask for it,” he
said.
“So initially I thought, ok I can
go over there and offer my assistance
to help train some soldiers
(and) give them a bit more of a
fighting chance.”
When Dillon first arrived in
the war-torn country he was
tasked with training the Ukrainian
ground forces.
However, the language barrier
made things difficult, so he
transferred to the Ukrainian
Foreign Legion.
“We had to use Google translate,
which in a war setting isn’t
perfect,” he said.
This was when his day-to-day
operations moved from training
soldiers to assisting on the
frontline.
Dillon suffered many serious
injuries, including being hit by
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Shannon Dillon
was initially tasked
with training the
Ukrainian ground
forces, but turned
to fighting on the
frontline due to the
language barrier.
an artillery round and a grenade
launcher.
“I got shrapnel in my shin,
shrapnel through my knee, a bullet
through my hip and a pretty
decent chunk taken out of my
arm,” Dillon said.
During one mission in the
Donetsk Oblast region, Dillon
and his unit were tasked with
taking over a village to secure a
foothold in a major Russian-held
city.
Dillon said he was hit by a
suicide drone.
It was the closest he’d ever
been to death.
“It’s probably the one time
there that I was thinking, ‘Well,
sh**, ok, maybe this is it,’” he
said.
“I remember lying in the
paddock after being hit, just
thinking because I couldn’t move
my leg, the next one’s gonna land
right on top of me.
“All I could think about was
my son, (how) I had made (him)
a promise that I was going to
come home and how upset he
would be if I broke that promise.
“So I dragged my ass up off the
ground and managed to drag
the next two months getting
back together.”
Dillon went through five
surgeries to remove shrapnel
from his body. He’s completed
gruelling rehabilitation and is
manning a hefty scar down his
right arm.
Back in August, he set up a
Givealittle page to cover his travel
back home to New Zealand.
He received over 92 donations,
amounting to $10,610.
“Thank you to everybody
who helped me to get back to
New Zealand (and) to make this
possible . . . without their help, I
wouldn’t have been enough to do
it,” he said.
He plans to enjoy the summer
break in Christchurch with
his son before heading back to
Ukraine early next year.
“My plans are still tentative,
but my intention is to go back
for another couple of months,”
Dillon said.
“I have some unfinished duties
there to take care of and then I’m
going to assess my situation from
there.”
Three New Zealanders are
known to have died in the wartorn
country.
Earlier this year, former NZ
Defence Force soldier Kane
Te Tai was killed fighting in
Ukraine.
Te Tai was instrumental in
setting up a charity for service
veterans and their families who
found themselves in crisis.
Corporal Dominic Abelen was
killed in Ukraine last August
while on unpaid leave from the
NZDF.
Dr Andrew Bagshaw died
alongside British volunteer
Christopher Parry while trying
to rescue an elderly woman in an
area of intense military action in
Soledar.
A street in the Donbas region
will be named after Bagshaw in
recognition of his service.
The New Zealand Government
has made it clear that those who
choose to fight in Ukraine go on
their own accord, without the
support of the defence force.
However, NZDF personnel
have overseen the training of
more than 2500 Armed Forces
of Ukraine recruits in the United
Kingdom. – NZ Herald
Canty lifestyle attracting Aucklanders
• By Nikki Preston
AUCKLANDERS are on the
move, coming to Christchurch in
their droves for a better work-life
balance.
More New Zealanders moved
to Canterbury than any other
region for the second year in a
row – 11,000 people in the year
ending June 2023, including
3000 who moved from elsewhere
in New Zealand.
Of that 11,000, 44 per cent had
moved to Christchurch, with
a further 31 per cent moving
to Selwyn and
12 per cent to
Waimakariri.
Christchurch-
NZ economic
analyst Sophie
Jones said the
Sophie
Jones
type of migrant
varied across
different parts
of Canterbury,
with Christchurch capturing
people moving from overseas,
and Selwyn and Waimakariri attracting
people from other parts
of the country.
Ray White Metro sales
manager Richard Withy said
they were still seeing a flow of
people moving down from the
North Island.
“The ones I’ve met have not
overseas buyers planning to relocate to Christchurch.
been coming here just
to get a cheaper house,
it’s generally because
they either had a family
connection, for others
it’s about employment –
they’ve got a job transfer
and better prospects here
and you combine that
with the lifestyle of the
Port Hills, the beach,
the alps – it’s very different to
the North Island, but
it is seeming to be very
attractive.”
Withy said last year
they had a family who
had self-classified
themselves as “Auckland
refugees” and made the
Richard move for a change in
Withy lifestyle for their young
family.
The more affordable housing
was also a bonus and many
were able to significantly lower
their mortgages after making
the move as they shifted from
a $1.2m house in Auckland
to one for about $700,000 in
Christchurch.
In addition to Kiwis moving
down south, he said there had
also been a huge diversification
in ethnicity as people arrived
from overseas.
ChristchurchNZ’s analysis of
migration data supported this
and showed most people settling
in Christchurch were most likely
moving from China, India,
Philippines, Australia, the UK
and South Africa.
While Hornsby, Halswell,
the CBD and Burwood have
on paper been the suburbs that
appeared to have benefitted
most from migration, agents
told OneRoof they were actually
buying all over the city.
In the last two months about
75 per cent of Harcourts agents
Tim Sprott and Nicky Brownlee
sales’ had been to overseas
buyers including a property
on Westburn Tce in Fendalton
that was snapped up in a
competitive auction by a phone
buyer in Taiwan relocating to
Christchurch earlier in the year.
Median rental prices had
grown 9.8 per cent in Canterbury
in the year ending September
2023 with the median rental
price rising from $455 to $500
per week.
The shift in house prices had
been less dramatic, with the
average house price in the three
months to November showing a
2 per cent rise in Christchurch,
according to CoreLogic’s house
price index. – NZ Herald
Noise part of central city
A SURVEY of more than 3000
respondents shows residents
want Christchurch’s night life
and nighttime economy to
thrive.
Throughout September, the
city council ran a survey asking
for views on noise in the CBD to
help address tensions that have
arisen as the area continues to
grow and evolve.
This would ultimately involve
changes to Christchurch’s District
Plan.
A total of 3339 people, including
92 businesses in the CBD,
1068 central city residents and
2239 broader residents responded
to questions about the CBD’s
noise environment. This included
feedback on what sort of
noise levels are expected, areas
being defined for entertainment,
and acoustic insulation.
“People made it very clear
through the survey that any District
Plan change would need to
help enable a vibrant nighttime
economy for the city,” head of
city growth and property Bruce
Rendall said.
“We also heard that most
people think living in the central
city comes hand-in-hand with
increased noise levels compared
to living in the suburbs and
they do not want the growing
residential population to come
at the expense of our nighttime
economy.”
Respondents indicated changing
noise precincts/zones was
the preferred District Plan
change, followed by increased
noise limits (i.e. allowance for
more noise) to focus on nighttime
economy and finally
changes to acoustic insulation
requirements.
“We need to balance having
content inner-city residents with
thriving businesses and nightlife,”
Rendall said.
“These results give us a good
understanding of the community’s
expectations for living in
and visiting the central city at
night and will help us establish
the sorts of support the council
could provide to residents and
businesses while we work on
long term changes.”
Staff are continuing to work
on a review of how the District
Plan manages the effects of different
activities in the central
city, including entertainment
precincts, noise limits and insulation
requirements.
A District Plan change
is expected to be ready for
consultation by 2025.
Sydenham breaks seven-year
premier men’s title drought
the Christchurch Metro T20 competition for the first time in
seven years. PHOTO: KEVIN CONGDON/SYDENHAM CRICKET
• By Sam Coughlan
SYDENHAM CRICKET club
have claimed their first premier
men’s trophy in seven years,
beating Lancaster Park by
five wickets to win the final of
the Christchurch Metro T20
competition at Sydenham Park.
After a rainy morning
forced the start to be delayed,
Sydenham won the toss and sent
Park in to bat on a damp and
tricky pitch.
All-rounder Harsh Visavadiya
took four wickets and conceded
just 15 runs from his four overs
to be crowned man of the match.
He said it was good to be
able to contribute to the team
on Sunday after a tough spell
recently.
“What I was doing in the last
few games wasn’t working with
bat and ball so it was nice to be
able to contribute in the final,”
he said.
Kalhan Marc Challu was the
only shining light for Park with
the bat, scoring 42 before he was
caught behind off the bowling
of Sydenham captain Mitchell
Gardner –part of a collapse in
the middle overs as Park lost five
wickets for 12 runs.
Gardner said he was happy to
force a collapse.
“They had 70-odd at the
halfway mark so I was thinking
at that stage anything under 120
would have been good,” he said.
In reply, opening batter Bevon
Jacobs got Sydenham off to a fast
start, scoring 22 runs from just
11 balls.
He was supported by Max
Clarke (27 from 36 balls) and
Ryan Wallace (24 from 35)
before Matt McCall (4 not out)
hit the winning runs.
Sydenham were boosted by
the availability of Canterbury
representatives Jacobs and allrounder
Michael Rippon, and
Gardner said the knowledge they
brought was fantastic.
“Rips (Rippon) just offers
something more, he’s clear
with his plans and what he’s
trying to do, which you don’t
always get in club cricket. To
have that experience in the
group is really good.”
Sydenham sit fourth in the
Christchurch Metro two-day
competition at the halfway point
with three wins and one loss,
and are fifth after one round of
the one-day competition.
CRICKET
McEwan’s golf challenge to mark 70th
• By Diane Keenan
FORMER NEW Zealand
cricketer Paul McEwan will
celebrate his 70th
birthday next Tuesday
by playing 72 holes of
golf, aiming to shoot in
the 70s for each of the
four rounds and raising
at least $100,000 for two
Canterbury charities.
He will tee off at 6am
at his former home
course, Waitikiri, and he
expects to finish around 7pm in
time for the rest of his birthday
celebrations with friends and
family. McEwan, who plays off
a 1.9 handicap and now lives in
Paul
McEwan
Wānaka, says two charities, the
Canterbury Neonatal Unit Trust
Fund and BrainTree, will share
the funds raised.
McEwan and his wife
Julie are passionate about
supporting both charities.
They set up the Canterbury
Neonatal Unit Trust
Fund 32 years ago.
“We had a little boy
who died in Starship
Hospital and then 11
months later we had twin
boys who spent 105 days
in Christchurch’s neonatal unit
– 95 of those on oxygen to keep
them alive. I was still involved
in cricket and thought (about)
what (I) could do to help support
families with sick or premature
babies,” he said.
He has chaired the trust since
its inception. Its first project
was installing an incubator in
the rescue helicopter to ensure
the safety of babies in transit
to the Christchurch Neonatal
Unit. Other projects have
included setting up the human
milk bank at Christchurch
Women’s Hospital, ongoing
nurse education and investing in
much-needed equipment for the
neonatal unit.
He also supports BrainTree,
which has built a wellness centre
on Langdons Rd, Papanui, for
those in the community with
neurological conditions including
multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s,
dementia and the effects of
stroke.
McEwan met Simon Challies,
who has played a key role
in developing BrainTree, while
playing club cricket for Old Collegians
at Elmwood Park.
Challies, the former chief
executive of Ryman Healthcare,
who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s
12 years ago, used to walk
around the park and the two
would chat.
“I really support everything
he has done with BrainTree,”
McEwan said.
He is not overwhelmed by his
daylight to dusk golfing challenge.
“To celebrate their 70th birthday,
most people go out to dinner
with friends and family and
have a few drinks. Not me. I will
virtually be walking a marathon
on the golf course,” he said.
He will have two playing partners
for each round, and close
friend and former cricketing
colleague Rod Latham will join
him for the final round.
While McEwan says he
expects to score close to par on
his handicap, he could be under
pressure on his final round given
people have pledged money on
the number of birdies achieved
during the day in which his best
birthday present will be reaching
his fundraising target.

ELMWOOD’S Abby Mason
will be seeking to defend her
Canterbury Open tennis singles
title and add the women’s
doubles cup to her trophy cabinet
with clubmate Louise Oxnevad
this weekend.
The Canterbury Open, which
starts tomorrow at Wilding
Park, has attracted around 30
entries from players throughout
the South Island. Qualifiers are
tomorrow with the tournament
on the weekend.
“We would have liked a
few more entries, but realise
that some players who
would normally compete in
Christchurch are competing
in the International Tennis
Federation world tour event
in Wellington,” said Tennis
Canterbury general manager
Bevan Johns.
The women’s event has
attracted Canterbury sisters
Lucia and Emme Gale who
both turned in impressive
performances at last week’s
national junior championships
in Christchurch.
Emme Gale won the national
junior 12 and under title beating
another Canterbury junior
Aliyah Daly, who also won the
doubles final where Gale was
runner-up.
Lucia Gale was finalist in the
U18 doubles with Canterbury’s
POWER: Abby Mason won
the Canterbury Open last
year.
Ruby Young, reached the
semi-finals of the singles and
although top-seed in the 16s
championship had to withdraw
due to injury. This week she has
been playing in the ITF event in
Wellington.
Southern Districts will be
represented in the tournament
by Charlie Byers of Dunedin
and Santisuk Marshall of
Queenstown.
Highly ranked Otago
representative Paddy Ou is
also heading north for the
tournament where he will line up
against many of Christchurch’s
premier men’s interclub players
including Jamie Garbett and
Harry Weeds.
Former David Cup player
Alister Hunt returns with son
Lochie to defend the doubles title
they won last year, with Lochie
also playing singles.
Another family affair is the
Watt brothers Aidan and Ryan
who are playing in Christchurch
while their older brother, James
is competing in Wellington.
James Watt, who was unbeaten
in singles for Elmwood in the
premier interclub playoffs, was
runner-up to New Zealand
Davis Cup player, Kiranpai
Pannu in the Wellington Open
men’s championship, losing a
hard-fought final 6-3, 6-7, 6-7.
Watt combined with Finley Hall
to win the Wellington men’s
doubles title.
In Brief
Bourke signs on for
two more years
Canterbury head coach Marty
Bourke has signed on for another
two years with the red and
blacks. Bourke took charge in
2022 following a spell as assistant
the year prior, replacing former
co-coaches Reuben Thorne and
Mark Brown. Under Bourke’s
tutelage the side recovered from
missing the playoffs in 2021 to
making the final in 2022 and
the semi-finals this year. The
43-year-old will also join the
Chiefs as an assistant and will
work under their highly-rated
coach Clayton McMillan in
what is his first role at this level.
Bourke will re-join Canterbury
following the 2024 Super Rugby
season.
Podium finish for golf
underdogs
An inexperienced Canterbury
men’s golf team finished an
unexpected third at the national
interprovincial tournament. The
six-strong team featured four
debutants, including 15-year
old Cooper Moore who had
attended in a developmental
capacity last year. The side
beat Waikato, North Harbour,
Aorangi and Southland and tied
with eventual winners Auckland
to progress to the semi-finals,
where they narrowly lost to
Bay of Plenty. Captain Reid
Hilton was impressive at his
seventh consecutive tournament,
winning all eight games he
played, while youngster Moore
won four of his seven, including
two halves.
Canterbury move up
the table
Canterbury lifted off the
bottom of the Ford Trophy table
following a washout against
the Otago Volts in Invercargill.
Persistent rain on Tuesday
meant play never got under way
at Queen’s Park between the
red-and-blacks, and the fourthranked
Volts. A solitary point
was enough to move Canterbury
ahead of Wellington on the table
thanks to a superior net run
rate, prior to the Firebirds’ game
in hand against Auckland. The
summer of cricket now moves to
the start of the Dream 11 Super
Twins ‘always support each other’
but competitive streak runs strong
• By Sam Coughlan
IDENTICAL TWINS Zara and
Eliza McDonnell are enjoying
huge success on the national
sporting stage – and right by
each others’ side.
The Rangi Ruru Girls’ School
students were first and second in
the junior girls high jump at the
New Zealand secondary schools
track and field championships
at Ngā Puna Wai over the weekend.
Zara won gold with a jump of
1.68m, seven centimetres ahead
of Eliza.
It was a carbon copy result of
the Canterbury championships
in February, with Zara taking
gold and Eliza silver in the under
16 grade.
The 15-year-olds said the national
championship result at the
weekend was a “cool moment”.
Eliza said it was “really amazing”.
She was proud of how she
and Zara jumped.
Competing against each other
from since they were young has
become normal. But Zara said
despite that, lining up against
each other was “still pretty
special”.
CLOSE COMPETITORS: Zara (right) and Eliza McDonnell
were first and second in the junior girls high jump at
the New Zealand secondary schools track and field
championships.
“We always support each other
when the other is competing,
but we obviously do want to beat
each other. At the end of the day,
one of us will win and one of us
will lose,” she said.
“It can be annoying sometimes
because we’re always together,
but there’s always some friendly
sibling rivalry.”
Their mum Glenda and dad
Phil said a competitive streak
when they were younger led to a
few moments where whoever lost
would get upset.
“I ended up saying ‘if it ends
up in tears I’m not going to
watch anymore’. I think they’ve
matured a bit since then. They
are genuinely supportive of each
other,” Glenda said.
The twins also excel in other
sports – basketball, hockey and
netball.
Glenda believes it’s perfect for
them to play the same sports.
“Having a twin in the house of
the same age, same sport, they’re
always throwing a volleyball
around in the yard or hitting the
hockey ball to each other.”
The twins’ club is Old Boys
coached Hamish Kerr to a gold
medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth
Games in 2022.
Said Zara: “He’s great, he’s
very knowledgeable. He’s a really
good coach on the sideline, gives
us lots of tips which really helps
us.”
Before moving to Old Boys,
the twins were coached by Brian
Cowan at Papanui Toc H, who
guided them to their medals at
the Canterbury championships.
And there’s no doubt the girls
will go from strength to strength
as their sporting lives unfold.
The Best Kept Secrets
to Selling Your Home
Selling Secret #1: The first impression is the
only impression. No matter how good the interior of
your home looks, buyers have already judged your
home before they walk through the door. You never
have a second chance to make a first impression. It’s
important to make people feel warm, welcome and
safe as they approach the house. Spruce up your
home’s exterior with inexpensive shrubs and brightly
coloured flowers. Entry ways are also important. You
use it as a utility space for your coat and keys. But,
when you’re selling, make it welcoming by putting in a
small bench or a vase of fresh-cut flowers.
Selling Secret #2: Always be ready to show. Your
house needs to be “show-ready” at all times – you
never know when your buyer is going to walk through
the door. You have to be available whenever they want
to come see the place and it has to be in tip-top shape.
Don’t leave dishes in the sink, keep the dishwasher
cleaned out, the bathrooms sparkling and make sure
there are no dust bunnies in the corners. It’s a little
inconvenient, but it will get your house sold.
Selling Secret #3: The kitchen comes first. You’re
not actually selling your house, you’re selling your
kitchen – that’s how important it is. The benefits of
remodelling your kitchen are endless, and the best
part of it is that you’ll probably get 85% of your money
back. It may be a few thousand dollars to replace
countertops where a buyer may knock $10,000 off the
asking price if your kitchen looks dated. The fastest,
most inexpensive kitchen updates include painting
and new cabinet hardware. Use a neutral-colour paint
so you can present buyers with a blank canvas where
they can start envisioning their own style. If you have
a little money to spend, buy one fancy stainless steel
appliance. Why one? Because when people see one
high-end appliance they think all the rest are expensive
too and it updates the kitchen.
Selling Secret #4: Take the home out of your
house. One of the most important things to do
when selling your house is to de-personalize it. The
more personal stuff in your house, the less potential
buyers can imagine themselves living there. Get rid of
a third of your stuff – put it in storage. This includes
family photos, memorabilia collections and personal
Home keepsakes. & Property Staging simply appears means arranging every your Thursday, will make it more delivered sellable. FREE
furniture to best showcase the floor plan and maximize
throughout Christchurch
the use of space.
Selling Secret #5: Don’t over-upgrade. Quick fixes
For before more selling information always pay off. Mammoth and bookings, makeovers, contact Mike Fulham
not so much. You probably won’t get your money back
your house on the market. Instead, do updates that
will pay off and get you top dollar. Get a new fresh
coat of paint on the walls. Clean the curtains or go buy
some inexpensive new ones. Replace door handles,
cabinet hardware, make sure closet doors are on track,
fix leaky facets and clean the grout.
Selling Secret #6: Conceal the critters. You might
think a cuddly dog would warm the hearts of potential
buyers, but you’d be wrong. Not everybody is a dog- or
cat-lover. Buyers don’t want to walk in your home and
see a bowl full of dog food, smell the kitty litter box or
have tufts of pet hair stuck to their clothes. It will give
buyers the impression that your house is not clean. If
you’re planning an open home don’t leave your pets
around.
Selling Secret #7: Play the agent field. A secret sale
killer is hiring the wrong real estate agent. Make sure
you have an agent who is totally informed. They must
constantly monitor the multiple listing service (MLS),
know what properties are going on the market and
know the comps in your neighbourhood. Find an agent
who embraces technology – a tech-savvy one has
many tools to get your house sold.
Selling Secret #8: Light it up. Maximize the light in
your home. After location, good light is the one thing
that every buyer cites that they want in a home. Take
down the drapes, clean the windows, change the
lampshades, increase the wattage of your light bulbs
and cut the bushes outside to let in sunshine. Do what
you have to do make your house bright and cheery – it
Selling Secret #9: Half-empty closets. Storage is
something every buyer is looking for and can never
have enough of. Take half the stuff out of your closets
then neatly organise what’s left in there. Buyers will
snoop, so be sure to keep all your closets and cabinets
clean and tidy.
Cycleway scrapped in east
Thursday, December 14, 2023
Christchurch’s best read and largest circulating newspaper
PLANS FOR a cycleway in
Aranui have been axed.
The plans were declined by the
Waitai Costal-Burwood-Linwood
Community Board due to safety
issues, no funding, and being
heavily opposed by the public.
An offer of 90 per cent
funding from Waka Kotahi for
the Government’s Streets for
People programme saw proposed
changes to Breezes Rd, which
if successful, would have been
trialled until June 2024.
‘I could
do this
every
day’
The Streets for People
programme is set up to help
make streets safer and easier for
all road users, and trialling street
changes ensures any permanent
solution meets the needs of the
community.
Two options were presented
to the community board for
changes along Breezes Rd: One,
a separated unidirectional cycle
lane on both sides of Breezes Rd
going between the Chisnallwood
Intermediate pedestrian crossing
and Pages Rd; the other a twoway
bi-directional cycleway
starting on the southern side of
Breezes Rd (near Chisnallwood
Intermediate) and
crossing to the north at
the Avondale golf course
pedestrian crossing.
It would return to the
southern side a the
Haeata Community
Campus crossing,
finishing on Pages Rd
after crossing back to
the northern side at a
newly created pedestrian
crossing at on Breezes
Rd.
Paul
McMahon
Said board chair Paul
McMahon: “The board
recommended to staff
council that neither
option was taken. This
isn’t a matter of not
supporting cycleways, as
the east does need proper
cycleways.
“Other aspects of the
Streets for People project
are great. These options
were just not viable
and didn’t have the
flexibility to work
through the implications of the
trial period.
“This recommendation will
go to the council, where they
will have to decide whether to
suppor the trial or not.”
The implications of one of the
options included a tota loss of
69 per cent of Breezes Rd car
parking (45 parks retained, 102
lost).
The other option involved 88
per cent parking loss (18 retained
and 129 lost), new on-street
parking loss from 108–126
Breezes Rd.
PLANTER BOXES were the
perfect canvas for budding young
artists working to make Aranui’s
streets more people friendly.
Pupils from Chisnallwood
Intermediate have decorated
the boxes outside the shops on
Hampshire St with murals
related to the shop they were
outside.
