Cycleway scrapped in east
• By Sasha Watson
PLANS FOR a cycleway in
Aranui have been axed.
The plans were declined by the
Waitai Costal-Burwood-Linwood
Community Board due to safety
issues, no funding, and being
heavily opposed by the public.
An offer of 90 per cent
funding from Waka Kotahi for
the Government’s Streets for
People programme saw proposed
changes to Breezes Rd, which
if successful, would have been
trialled until June 2024.
The Streets for People
programme is set up to help
make streets safer and easier for
all road users, and trialling street
changes ensures any permanent
solution meets the needs of the
community.
Two options were presented
to the community board for
changes along Breezes Rd: One,
a separated unidirectional cycle
lane on both sides of Breezes Rd
going between the Chisnallwood
Intermediate pedestrian crossing
and Pages Rd; the other a twoway
bi-directional cycleway
starting on the southern side of
Breezes Rd (near Chisnallwood
Intermediate) and
crossing to the north at
the Avondale golf course
pedestrian crossing.
It would return to the
southern side at the
Haeata Community
Campus crossing,
finishing on Pages Rd
after crossing back to
the northern side at a
newly created pedestrian
crossing at on Breezes
Rd.
Paul
McMahon
Said board chair Paul
McMahon: “The board
recommended to staff
council that neither
option was taken. This
isn’t a matter of not
supporting cycleways, as
the east does need proper
cycleways.
“Other aspects of the
Streets for People project
are great. These options
were just not viable
and didn’t have the
flexibility to work
through the implications of the
trial period.
“This recommendation will
go to the council, where they
will have to decide whether to
support the trial or not.”
The implications of one of the
options included a total loss of
69 per cent of Breezes Rd car
parking (45 parks retained, 102
lost).
The other option involved 88
per cent parking loss (18 retained
and 129 lost), new on-street
parking loss from 108–126
Breezes Rd.
PLANTER BOXES were the
perfect canvas for budding young
artists working to make Aranui’s
streets more people friendly.
Pupils from Chisnallwood
Intermediate have decorated
the boxes outside the shops on
Hampshire St with murals
related to the shop they were
outside.
There are chips for the fish
and chip shop, people from the
neighbourhood, flowers and even
a kiwi on a surfboard.
Calleigh’s design, which is outside
the Hampshire Mini Mart,
features the shop’s customers.
“It’s great,” Calleigh said. “I
could do this sort of thing every
single day.
“I’ve seen a lot of murals
around town, and I took inspiration
from those.”
The students were mentored
by local artist Brandon Warrell,
whose art is featured throughout
Christchurch.
Mariella Howard
and Natalie Berie
won the inaugural
Environment
Canterbury
regional excellence
award for
environmental
solutions for their
sustainable dog
treats.
• By Sasha Watson
THE PET food market is a
lucrative business and two
teenagers are intent on getting a
slice of it.
Mariella Howard of
Hillsborough and Natalie Berie
of Shirley, both 17, have set up
For Earth, which makes dog
treats from out-of-shape fruit
and vegetables that can’t be sold
commercially.
The pair are university bound
next year after finishing up at
Hagley College.
Mariella’s four-year-old german
shorthaired pointer, Archie,
was the inspiration for their
company, which was recognised
at the Young Enterprise Scheme
awards night.
The teenagers received the
regional excellence award for environmental
solutions, sponsored
by Environment Canterbury, as
their focus was to be environmentally
friendly while raising
awareness of food waste.
Said Natalie: “Mariella and I
decided to enrol in the Young
Enterprise Scheme and sell dog
treats, but needed to have some
kind of irresistible selling point.
“They were already fruit and
vegie-based, so it wasn’t too far
of a leap to start using ugly/misshapen
ingredients. Simultaneously,
this helped our marketing
and gave us a lot to talk about
when asked about our product.”
YES is delivered by Ara Te
Pūkenga, and throughout the
year the students scored depending
on how successfully they
completed challenges.
Natalie and Mariella received
84 marks out of a possible 100.
“On its own, it wasn’t substantial
enough to get us any awards,
but what set us aside was the ecofriendly
focus of our business,”
said Natalie.
“Every aspect was optimised
to be as sustainable as possible,
which ultimately led to us winning
the YES regional excellence
award.”
There were seven awards across
several categories presented
on the night. Other winners
included a book production company,
students who made bags
and aprons for their teachers,
cup holder creators, and a decal
company.
ECan councillor Greg Byrnes,
one of three judges for the award,
said For Earth stood out.
“We chose For Earth from
Hagley Community College to
receive this award because they
considered sustainability in
every step of their process,” said
Byrnes.
“Like many Cantabrians, we
also love our pets, and thought
it was great that For Earth had
created such a practical and easy
way for people to make a positive
change to their purchasing
habits.”
JUMPSTART
LAUNCH YOUR PROPERTY
TO THE MARKET IN JAN
As we get ready to welcome
2023, I want to let you in on a
special offer I've put together
called the 'January Jumpstart'.
It's aimed at homeowners
thinking about selling and
wanting to get a great start to
the new year.
January is a bit different in the
real estate world. There are
usually fewer homes for sale, but
lots of buyers are still out there
looking. This means if you're
selling, you've got less
competition and more eyes on
your property. It's a great chance
to stand out and possibly get
better offers.
So, what's in the January
Jumpstart? First, there's a really
competitive commission rate of
just $15,000 + GST. Plus, I'm
throwing in a $500 voucher for
home prep. This can help with
staging or making little
improvements to make sure
your home looks its best.
I'm keeping this offer to just five
spots. This way, I can give each
home the attention it deserves
and really focus on getting the
best results. Just remember, the
last day to sign up is December
20th. I'm looking forward to
helping you make a great start
to 2024.
Term 4 - From the Tumuaki
Avonside Girls’ High School
Te Kura Kohine o Ōtākaro
Educating and empowering young women
to achieve now and in the future.
Ko Hine-Titama koe nānā i puta ki te whai ao ki te ao mārama
Ko Hine-Titama koe nānā i puta ki te whai ao ki
te ao mārama
This school whakatauki speaks to the atua
wahine Hine-Titema and seeking the light.
The story of Hine Titama is one of female
transformation and female self-determination, a
story of agency and defining your own narrative.
For our staff, students and community at Te
Kura Kohine o Ōtakaro/Avonside Girls’ High
School coming out of ‘the covid years’ into
2023 has been about redefining our identity,
leaning into our values and aspirations, and
connecting with our local community. This year
our young people have set about transforming
our school and spaces through their leadership,
feedback and voice. They have been involved in
professional development work with teachers,
feedback to the Board and decision making with
the Senior Leadership Team. Our students have
continued to lead the school culture as can be
seen in so many of these photos. There have
been so many sports, cultural and academic
success and these were celebrated in our Sports
Awards night, Our Whakaui Awards night, FiaFIa
Awards night and Senior and Junior Prizegiving.
When I started at Avonside I spoke about the
importance of the whakatauki, ‘Kia whakatōmuri
te haere whakamua’. I walk backwards into the
future with my eyes fixed on my past. Whilst
we may look at the photographs of our past
and see gym tunics and straw hats as archaic
and traditional, the story of single sex schools
for young women has been far from archaic
and traditional. It has always been, even
95 years ago for our kura, about providing
an educational space for young women to
thrive, be empowered through education to
innovate, create and lead society with a critical
and challenging voice. These aspirations and
drivers continue to be important today as
we look forward. Ninety-five years on similar
challenges still face our young women in the
world in which they will work and lead. In our
kura we also embrace the challenges for our
transgender and LGBTQI community within our
school and it has been essential for us to ensure
our empowerment of these young people and
their voice at Avonside. Our school value of Kia
Tu (standing tall in your identity) is at the heart
of what we do and celebrate and at the heart
of real equity. We talk about kia Maia with our
students, the courage that is needed every day
in both small and large spaces. The courage
needed to attempt that new learning, the
courage to stand and speak, and the courage
to lead. At this time, I have been reflecting how
we all as the adults need to feel empowered
to be courageous too for our young people.
The courage to hold firm to what we value and
believe is important within our school space
for our students to be empowered to thrive in
their identity. Regardless of the winds blowing
through politics and media, our job is to hold
the tiller strong and steady and sail in the
direction we know will protect and transform
our young people to stand in their identity and
self-determine their future. We will continue
to ensure there is a wairua in which all our
young people belong strong in their identity.
We continue to support your young people to
aim high – ki te ao marama – academically and
as connected, courageous and compassionate
leaders.
We do this in partnership as a community –
and I want to thank all those in our community
who contribute in so many ways to our school;
as coaches, managers, on the Board, turning
up to parent events, feeding back in surveys,
getting in touch with concerns. A huge thank
you to all the manaakitanga and community
support from you as whanau. There are so
many things at Avonside we cannot do without
your support and together we are a community
that empowers our young people to thrive in all
areas of their teenage lives. Your contribution
matters and we cannot do what we do here to
nurture your young person without our whanau.
Enjoy these photos of the last part of 2023.
Well done to all our amazing students who
are inspiring to work with every day.
Young flautists inspired by
Russian music teacher
• By Sasha Watson
MUSIC TEACHER Natasha
Chernousova has hit the
right note with two of her
students taking out awards in
an international online-based
championship.
Louise Chen, of Halswell,
won the 13 to 14-year-old age
category and Claire Kim, of
Ilam, won the 13 to 16-year-old
creative presentation.
Said Chernousova, who lives
in New Brighton: “The student
response was great, they look
forward to this competition
every year and they train and
practice a lot.
“Our students did very well
and put little New Zealand on
the map.”
Chernousova learned to play
the flute when she was six or
seven years old, in her home city
of Perm, Russia.
She later performed in the
orchestra of the Perm Theatre of
Opera and Ballet in Russia from
1999 to 2012, where she travelled
around Europe, America and
Canada.
“It was among my fondest
memories, as every day we met
new people, experienced different
cultures and learnt about
many countries,” she said.
The theatre is about 1000km
from Moscow and is often
named “Tchaikovsky’s House”
after Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky,
who was born near Perm in
1840.
It presents all stage works
of Tchaikovsky, including the
ballets Swan Lake and The
Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture,
the Romeo and Juliet Overture-
Fantasy, and several symphonies.
“After my time in the theatre, I
met a very nice Kiwi man online,
Eric Reeves, and talked to him
for several months before we
met in Phuket, Thailand. We
had a wonderful holiday,” said
Chernousova.
A short while later, Chernousava
decided to make the move
to New Zealand and married
Reeves in 2016. A few months
later, she began to teach flute to
her first students.
Chernousova has taught the
flute to year 9 Burnside High
School student Louise for seven
years and year 9 Rangi Ruru
Girls’ School student Claire Kim
for more than four years.
Both girls were also highly
commended for their performance
in the U16s ensemble,
where they performed together.
NOTEWORTHY: Natasha Chernousova with flute students
Louise Chen and Claire Kim.
They are both on their way to
reaching their goals as professional
musicians.
“Music is my passion. I aim
to inspire and challenge my
students to become the best
possible versions of themselves
inside and outside of music,” said
Chernousova.
“My goal is to make every lesson
as productive, educational,
and fulfilling as possible. I aim
to provide the students the
tools and resources to be able to
achieve what they wish for.”
She teaches the flute, recorder,
piccolo and piano to both adult
and young students, and offers
beginner and advanced lessons
privately at Natasha’s Music
Studio.
Chernousova also teaches
part-time at Cashmere High
School and Avonside Girls High,
and plays for the Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Risingholme
Orchestra.
Lots of
people
opposed
to plan
• From page 1
It also included a cul-de-sac
on Gosport St at Breezes Rd
as through traffic cannot
safely negotiate the two-way
cycleway proposed for this side
of the road.
There would have also been
a painted lane for cyclists at
the Avondale golf course and
Haeata Community Campus
pedestrian crossings, and an
additional pedestrian crossing
with a painted lane for cyclists
to cross outside 257/276
Breezes Rd.
Said
community
board member
Kelly
Barber: “A
lot of people
were overwhelmingly
Kelly Barber
opposed to
the changes.
I had only one resident who
supported the cycleway when
I went door-knocking to find
out what residents wanted.
“A few quick wins won’t fix
a long-term problem. Though
a lot of the changes made good
sense, and while it would be
good to have another option, it
needs to be a permanent one.”
Centre lacks extra funds to help
CHOLMONDELEY Children’s
Centre has seen demand for
its services climb as the cost of
living bites.
The centre in Governors
Bay provides free respite care
for children and support for
families.
Centre general manager Toni
Tinirau said in recent years
there has been
a constant
demand for its
services.
She said there
were “countless
weekly phone
inquiries” and a
Toni Tinirau
current wait list
of 51 children.
In the 2022-
2023 financial year 351 children
from 295 families accessed
the centre’s facilities. It was
an increase on the 2021-2022
financial year which saw 331
children from 267 families, and
the 2020–2021 year with 318
children from 229 families.
Said Tinirau: “The need for
our services hasn’t gone away, it’s
grown. And as the cost of living
puts more pressure on whānau
doing it tough, it’s only natural
there’ll be more demand.”
The centre has 23 beds to stay
overnight and on average only 17
of these beds are occupied.
“It’s my dream to have every
one of those 23 beds filled every
night. But it’s just not achievable
at the moment because we
don’t have the funding or the
resources.
“The space is there, the
demand is there, we are just
lacking the consistent financial
support. It’ll cost an additional
estimated $250,000 annually
to have all 23 beds filled every
night,” said Tinirau.
Cholmondeley costs $2.8
million to run each year with
20 per cent covered by the
Government. The remaining 80
per cent is generated through
community fundraising.
Said Tinirau: “We have been
looking really closely at how to
raise the much needed funds
for Cholmondeley as it’s been a
difficult time globally to raise
funds for charities.”
She said children are given
round-the-clock care, outdoor
experiences, learning activities
designed to build wellbeing
and resilience, and a fun
environment where they are only
asked “to be kids”.
“The support Cholmondeley
provides doesn’t stop when
tamariki turn 12. It also has the
‘Awhi Team’ (care team) made up
of social workers, youth workers
and whānau ora navigators who
walk alongside whānau in their
own homes to address issues
they’re facing.
“We support tamariki coming
from homes where there
could be issues with health,
accommodation, interpersonal
relationships, single-parent
whānau, family violence,
family harm, mental health or
addiction.
“We just need Cantabrians’
help. Do not underestimate the
level of support you can provide
a charity like Cholmondeley.
Never think that you could never
give enough, because whatever
you can do, however you can
support us, will certainly help
our whānau,” she said.

Te Aratai College:
Te tua o Paerangi
Above the entrance to Te Puna, our kura
auditorium, we have the Whakataukī relevant
to this time of year: Titiro whakamuri, kia anga
whakamua: Look to the past in order to move
forward. It is an exciting new year for us to
look forward to as our kura turns 70 years old.
But before we move into all the iterations and
innovations the new year will bring us, we would
like to appreciate some of the wonderful things
our ākonga have accomplished this year.
Scholarship recipients Mark Lemon, Destiny
Martin, Connor Armstrong, Jason Prakash,
Imogen Donnelly and Mae Ibo
At our Senior Prizegiving, we celebrated
the extraordinary achievement of our senior
scholarship winners. These deserving students
demonstrated the values of the scholarship
requirements across several universities:
academic achievement, resilience, leadership,
excellence, cultural contributions, social
engagement, overcoming adversity, and many
other indicators. Our students were thoroughly
deserving of financial and personal support, and
these scholarships will provide an amazing boost
as they kickstart their tertiary journey. With the
fees, cash, catered accommodation, summer
school programmes and mentoring support, the
photo from our Prizegiving Evening represents
over $70,000 that universities have invested in Te
Aratai College students for their future pathways -
an amazing achievement.
Kindness Collective, a volunteer group of ākonga
who collected litter around the school grounds,
oversaw positive affirmations written by students
for their peers and acknowledged school staff
for their hard mihi. The group was also featured
in national news media for their initiative at the
Aldwins House retirement home, regularly visiting
residents to kōrero or play pool, embracing the
goodwill in their community.
This year we also saw five learners participate
in “Word: The Front Line Ōtautahi,” a spoken
word poetry slam. This was the first time the
competition was held in the South Island, held at
The Piano Event Center in August. The night was
full of amazing orator-performers from 5 different
schools who explored a variety of topics like
identity, diversity, rugby and Shakespeare. The Te
Aratai team performers practised hard, attending
weekend workshops to make sure their poems
were interesting, catchy, and most importantly
“felt.” It was an extraordinary night to be part of
with incredibly moving and provocative poetry
performed by so many young, talented poets from
across Ōtautahi-Christchurch.
Blake Williams, Connor Armstrong and
Thomas Rhoades in the YES Dragon’s Den
In our business school, we saw the success of
an inspiring business venture, spearheaded by
a group of Te Aratai College students. “Decalify”
was an entrepreneurial endeavour that made an
impressive impact with its cultural window decal
designs and fully youth-run business model.
Throughout the year the business team were
placed 1st in the Canterbury Young Enterprise
Dragon’s Den event, successfully awarded
the contract to place all the window decals on
Kindness Foundation’s (Previously YMCA) new
$44 million building on Rolleston Avenue, and
awarded 1st Place Finance, 1st Place Enterprise
Technology, and 2nd Place Rangatahi New
Zealand Young Enterprise in the In Canterbury
Young Enterprise Competition.
On the sports field, Te Aratai and the Under 14
Boys’ Rugby team had a historic season in 2023.
This group of young men ended up being graded
in the top division of Under 14 Boys’ Rugby,
Division One, Section One. From there, the group
did two special things; beating Christ’s College
to win the Challenge Cup which is essentially
the Ranfurly Shield of the Under 14 division, and
then defending this until the end of the season
and earning the right to have Te Aratai College
engraved on it for the first time. They also then
finished top of the table after the round robin
and beat Christchurch Boys’ High and Christ’s
College on the way to winning the final of Division
One, Section One. Te Aratai College is the first
co-educational school to achieve this.
To us all, whatever 2024 brings for each one of
us, and it will be different for me too, ngā mihi
nui and best wishes for the festive season and
summer ahead. I leave this school so enriched
by everything that I have been able to learn from
you all over the years on my own pathway to the
sea at Linwood HS - Linwood College - Te Aratai
College.
Richard Edmundson
Leaving Tumuaki-Principal
Tyrek Kohu
Smriti Parajuli at Aldwins House
At our Senior Prizegiving, we were also able to
celebrate the inspiring effort of Smriti Parajuli with
the Te Aratai College Community Service Award.
Smriti was part of the AKC: the Te Aratai Acts of
Showstopping Christmas treats
Roasted hazelnut and
espresso tiramisu cream
pavlova
Serves 8-10
Pavlova
6 large egg whites
1½ cups caster sugar
1 Tbsp cornflour
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup roughly chopped roasted
hazelnuts
Tiramisu cream
1 Tbsp instant espresso coffee
granules
2 Tbsp boiling water
250g mascarpone
½ cup cream
4 Tbsp demerara sugar
1/3 cup finely grated dark chocolate
To assemble
300ml cream, softly whipped
Fudgy chocolate sauce (see end)
Hazelnut praline (see end)
Method
Pavlova: Trace a 20cm-diameter
circle on two sheets of baking
paper. Turn the paper over and
place each one on a flat baking
tray.
• Preheat the oven to 120°C
regular bake.
• Whisk the egg whites to soft
peaks, then gradually add the
sugar, one tablespoon at a time.
Whisk until thick and glossy
and the sugar is dissolved. The
mixture should be smooth when
rubbed between your fingertips.
Any undissolved sugar will cause
the meringue to weep.
• Sift over the cornflour and
add the lemon juice, vanilla and
hazelnuts. Using a large metal
spoon, fold into the meringue.
• Spoon half the meringue
into the centre of each circle on
your baking paper, then, using
the back of a large spoon,
carefully spread it to the edge of
the circles, building up the sides
and swirling the top, keeping the
meringue as high as possible.
• Bake for 1 hour, alternating
the trays after 30 minutes.
Turn off the oven and, with the
door closed, leave the meringues
YUM: Two layers
inside to cool completely.
Tiramisu cream: Dissolve the
coffee in the boiling water, then
cool. Place all the remaining
ingredients in a bowl, add the
cooled coffee and very gently
whisk until smooth. Don’t over
mix or it will split and curdle.
Cover and refrigerate for at least
1 hour and up to 24 hours.
To assemble: Gently whisk
the Tiramisu cream and softly
whipped cream together to firmish
peaks. Place one meringue on
a serving plate and spread over
half the cream. Top with the second
meringue and dollop on the
remaining cream. Drizzle with
some fudgy chocolate sauce and
scatter with pieces of hazelnut
praline.
Fudgy chocolate sauce (gf)
Makes 1½ cups
1 cup cream
150g dark chocolate, roughly
chopped (72% cocoa)
2 Tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
Method
• Put the cream in a small
saucepan and heat until just
below boiling.
• Take off the heat and add the
chocolate.
• Leave for 1 minute, then stir
until smooth.
• Stir in the golden syrup and
vanilla and set aside to cool.
Hazelnut praline (gf)
Makes 1½ cups
1 cup whole roasted hazelnuts
1 cup caster sugar
¼ cup water
Method
• Line a greased baking tray
with baking paper and place the
nuts close together on the tray.
• Put the sugar and water in a
clean saucepan over a medium
heat.
• Whisk to combine, then stop
stirring and wait for the sugar to
become golden in colour, swirling
the pan for even colouring.
• Immediately drizzle it all over
the nuts, then leave to harden.
Break into pieces to serve.
Spiced Christmas schnaps
Weihnachtsschnaps
Ingredients
5 cardamom pods, bruised
Peel of 1 orange, sliced and without
pith
250ml (1 cup) high-quality 37% to
40% spirit, such as korn or gin
1 to 2 heaped tsp runny raw honey
½ vanilla bean, split and seeds
scraped out
1 cinnamon quill
1 cassia stick
8 star anise
2 cloves
Method
• Place spices and orange peel
into a glass bottle that will hold
at least 300ml. Add the spirit and
shake. Close the lid and leave to
infuse for 2–4 days.
• Taste daily to see when you are
happy with the infusion. The longer
you leave the infusion, the more the
anise flavour will develop from the
star anise.
• Strain off the liquid, put the
whole ingredients in the compost
and return the infused spirit to the
bottle.
• Add the honey to taste and
shake vigorously to dissolve it,
about 2 minutes.
• Add the vanilla bean and seeds
and swill the bottle to disperse the
seeds. Let this infuse for at least
another week before serving.
• You can then either remove the
vanilla bean or leave it to continue
infusing.
• Store indefinitely in your drinks
cabinet.
