Pedestrians complain about
cyclists on Coastal Pathway
• By Dylan Smits
CYCLISTS ARE causing
problems for pedestrians on
the new $17.3 million Coastal
Pathway.
A Ferrymead resident says she
had to quickly step out of the
way of a cyclist, injuring her foot
in the process. She was with her
mother and pushing her toddler
in a stroller.
The woman did not see the
cyclist travelling towards her, she
said until her mother told her to
“watch out.”
“I feel like every pedestrian
should feel in danger because of
these cyclists. They think they
own roads and our footpaths,” she
said.
The near miss happened by
Shag Rock.
The woman is not alone in her
concerns about cyclists going too
fast on the pathway.
Polly Nash, 77, said she now
avoids walking on the Coastal
Pathway out of fear of being hit.
“I use a walking frame and walk
slow. They can be quite unnerving
at times. It’s people with dogs and
young families who are most at
risk.”
The city council is looking
for solutions. The best places on
the pathway to add signage and
pavement markings are currently
under consideration.
These markings and signs
would emphasise the shared nature
of the pathway.
City council planning and
delivery transport manager Jacob
Bradbury said the goal is to “ensure
that users are aware that the
shared path is a friendly go-slow
zone.”
He said pedestrians have right
of way on shared paths like the
Coastal Pathway.
“We acknowledge that some
cyclists may wish to travel faster
through this area, so the on-road
cycle lanes have been retained for
those who wish to travel at speed.”
Cyclists are recommended by
the city council to either pass
pedestrians considerately, use
alternative routes, or use the road
cycle lane.
Some users of the path, especially
cyclists, see the issue
differently and feel it is everyone’s
responsibility to keep the route
safe.
Reuben Hunt, of Sumner, uses
the pathway to walk and cycle. He
has sympathy for both sides of the
issue.
“You get a tiny minority of
cyclists and pedestrians that spoil
it for everyone else.”
Hunt believes it would help
solve the issue if advanced road
and speed cyclists used the road
cycle lane.
Tips for a Safe Summer and Festive Season from Kōwhai Vet
‘Tis the season to be jolly, and at Kōwhai Vet
Clinic, we want to make sure your furry family
members join in the merriment safely. The
holidays bring an array of festive foods and
decorations that can pose potential hazards to
our pets. Here’s a reminder of some things to
look out for to keep your four-legged friends
healthy and happy throughout the Christmas
celebrations and summer season…
Chocolate: Keep Dogs Away from the
Dark Side
While chocolate is a delightful treat for us, it
contains theobromine and caffeine that can be
highly toxic to pets. The darker the chocolate the
higher the levels of these substances. Keep all
chocolate goodies, including decorations and gift
wrappings, out of paws’ reach to prevent accidental
ingestion.
Christmas Cake: Not Such a Merry Christmas Treat for
Pets
Raisins, commonly found in Christmas cakes, can be
harmful to dogs, leading to kidney failure.
If your festive spread includes fruitcakes, ensure they are
stored securely, and keep a watchful eye on your pet to
avoid any unwanted snacking. Fresh grapes can be equally
harmful.
Christmas Lilies: A Blooming Catastrophe for Cats
While the beauty of lilies enhances our homes during the
holidays, they are highly toxic to cats.
Ingesting any part of the plant can cause kidney failure.
If you suspect your cat has come into contact with lilies,
contact your vet promptly.
Christmas Decorations: Pretty, but Potentially Perilous
Ornaments, tinsel, and festive lights can attract the
attention of playful pets. Ingesting these decorations can
lead to choking or intestinal blockages. Keep a watchful
eye on your furry friends and consider pet-proofing your
decorations.
Christmas Ham and High-Fat Foods: A Recipe for
Tummy Troubles
While it’s tempting to share your festive feast with your
pet, over-indulgence in high-fat foods like Christmas ham
can cause tummy upsets or even lead to a nasty bout of
pancreatitis. Stick to pet-friendly treats and avoid giving in
to those pleading eyes at the dinner table.
Barbecue Meats with Bones: A Choking Hazard
While indulging in a festive barbecue, it pays to keep half
an eye out for crafty canines hoping to snaffle a sneaky
snack from the feast. Cooked bones can splinter or pieces
of bone can be swallowed whole and can cause serious
internal injuries or blockages in your pet’s digestive
system. Corn cobs and kebab skewers are another
barbecue hazard so dispose of bones and other leftovers
safely and monitor your pet during outdoor gatherings.
Onions and Garlic: Could All End in Tears
Onions and garlic, common ingredients in many meals,
contain compounds that can damage a pet’s red blood
cells, leading to anemia. Ensure all leftovers are kept away
from inquisitive noses to avoid accidental ingestion.
Hops for Home Brew: Not for Furry Friends
For those enjoying home brewing, be aware that the
hops can be toxic to dogs. Ingestion can lead to increased
temperature, rapid breathing, and even death. Ensure
brewing supplies are stored securely away from pets.
Grass Seeds: A Pesky Problem for Paws
Everyone loves getting out for summertime walks, but be
sure to check your dog’s coat for grass seeds when you get
home. Pay particular attention to paws and ears where
these pesky seed heads have a habit of penetrating.
The team at Kōwhai Vet Clinic wishes everyone a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to
welcoming you and your furry companions in good health
in the coming year.
May your holidays be filled with joy, warmth, and the
delightful presence of your beloved pets.
Stay safe and have a Pawsitively wonderful Christmas!
Environment
Canterbury
regional excellence
award for
treats.
THE PET food market is a
lucrative business and two
teenagers are intent on getting a
slice of it.
Mariella Howard of
Hillsborough and Natalie Berie
of Shirley, both 17, have set up
For Earth, which makes dog
treats from out-of-shape fruit
and vegetables that can’t be sold
commercially.
The pair are university bound
next year after finishing up at
Hagley College.
Mariella’s four-year-old german
shorthaired pointer, Archie,
was the inspiration for their
company, which was recognised
at the Young Enterprise Scheme
awards night.
The teenagers received the
regional excellence award for environmental
solutions, sponsored
by Environment Canterbury, as
their focus was to be environmentally
friendly while raising
awareness of food waste.
Said Natalie: “Mariella and I
decided to enrol in the Young
Enterprise Scheme and sell dog
treats, but needed to have some
kind of irresistible selling point.
“They were already fruit and
vegie-based, so it wasn’t too far
of a leap to start using ugly/misshapen
ingredients. Simultaneously,
this helped our marketing
and gave us a lot to talk about
when asked about our product.”
YES is delivered by Ara Te
Pūkenga, and throughout the
year the students scored depending
on how successfully they
completed challenges.
Natalie and Mariella received
84 marks out of a possible 100.
“On its own, it wasn’t substantial
enough to get us any awards,
but what set us aside was the ecofriendly
focus of our business,”
said Natalie.
“Every aspect was optimised
to be as sustainable as possible,
which ultimately led to us winning
the YES regional excellence
award.”
There were seven awards across
several categories presented
on the night. Other winners
included a book production company,
students who made bags
and aprons for their teachers,
cup holder creators, and a decal
company.
ECan councillor Greg Byrnes,
one of three judges for the award,
said For Earth stood out.
“We chose For Earth from
Hagley Community College to
receive this award because they
considered sustainability in
every step of their process,” said
Byrnes.
“Like many Cantabrians, we
also love our pets, and thought
it was great that For Earth had
created such a practical and easy
way for people to make a positive
change to their purchasing
habits.”
TOP DOG: Mariella’s dog
Archie was the inspiration
for the students’ company,
which makes dog treats.
Te Aratai College:
Te tua o Paerangi
Above the entrance to Te Puna, our kura
auditorium, we have the Whakataukī relevant
to this time of year: Titiro whakamuri, kia anga
whakamua: Look to the past in order to move
forward. It is an exciting new year for us to
look forward to as our kura turns 70 years old.
But before we move into all the iterations and
innovations the new year will bring us, we would
like to appreciate some of the wonderful things
our ākonga have accomplished this year.
Scholarship recipients Mark Lemon, Destiny
Martin, Connor Armstrong, Jason Prakash,
Imogen Donnelly and Mae Ibo
At our Senior Prizegiving, we celebrated
the extraordinary achievement of our senior
scholarship winners. These deserving students
demonstrated the values of the scholarship
requirements across several universities:
academic achievement, resilience, leadership,
excellence, cultural contributions, social
engagement, overcoming adversity, and many
other indicators. Our students were thoroughly
deserving of financial and personal support, and
these scholarships will provide an amazing boost
as they kickstart their tertiary journey. With the
fees, cash, catered accommodation, summer
school programmes and mentoring support, the
photo from our Prizegiving Evening represents
over $70,000 that universities have invested in Te
Aratai College students for their future pathways -
an amazing achievement.
Kindness Collective, a volunteer group of ākonga
who collected litter around the school grounds,
oversaw positive affirmations written by students
for their peers and acknowledged school staff
for their hard mihi. The group was also featured
in national news media for their initiative at the
Aldwins House retirement home, regularly visiting
residents to kōrero or play pool, embracing the
goodwill in their community.
This year we also saw five learners participate
in “Word: The Front Line Ōtautahi,” a spoken
word poetry slam. This was the first time the
competition was held in the South Island, held at
The Piano Event Center in August. The night was
full of amazing orator-performers from 5 different
schools who explored a variety of topics like
identity, diversity, rugby and Shakespeare. The Te
Aratai team performers practised hard, attending
weekend workshops to make sure their poems
were interesting, catchy, and most importantly
“felt.” It was an extraordinary night to be part of
with incredibly moving and provocative poetry
performed by so many young, talented poets from
across Ōtautahi-Christchurch.
Blake Williams, Connor Armstrong and
Thomas Rhoades in the YES Dragon’s Den
In our business school, we saw the success of
an inspiring business venture, spearheaded by
a group of Te Aratai College students. “Decalify”
was an entrepreneurial endeavour that made an
impressive impact with its cultural window decal
designs and fully youth-run business model.
Throughout the year the business team were
placed 1st in the Canterbury Young Enterprise
Dragon’s Den event, successfully awarded
the contract to place all the window decals on
Kindness Foundation’s (Previously YMCA) new
$44 million building on Rolleston Avenue, and
awarded 1st Place Finance, 1st Place Enterprise
Technology, and 2nd Place Rangatahi New
Zealand Young Enterprise in the In Canterbury
Young Enterprise Competition.
On the sports field, Te Aratai and the Under 14
Boys’ Rugby team had a historic season in 2023.
This group of young men ended up being graded
in the top division of Under 14 Boys’ Rugby,
Division One, Section One. From there, the group
did two special things; beating Christ’s College
to win the Challenge Cup which is essentially
the Ranfurly Shield of the Under 14 division, and
then defending this until the end of the season
and earning the right to have Te Aratai College
engraved on it for the first time. They also then
finished top of the table after the round robin
and beat Christchurch Boys’ High and Christ’s
College on the way to winning the final of Division
One, Section One. Te Aratai College is the first
co-educational school to achieve this.
To us all, whatever 2024 brings for each one of
us, and it will be different for me too, ngā mihi
nui and best wishes for the festive season and
summer ahead. I leave this school so enriched
by everything that I have been able to learn from
you all over the years on my own pathway to the
sea at Linwood HS - Linwood College - Te Aratai
College.
‘It’s a shared path, share the thing’
• From page 1
Sumner resident Peter van
Hout uses the pathway to cycle
to work. He believes some
pedestrians need to be more
aware of their surroundings.
“I see walkers walking on their
right, so I am heading for them.
Do I stay on my course, or do I
assume they will see me and go
back on track to their left again?”
Overall, van Hout wants
all users of the pathway to be
mindful of best practices on a
mixed-use pathway.
“Be kind, and that is what
it boils down to. It’s a shared
pathway, share the thing.”
Sumner Residents’ Association
and Hub coordinator Charlie
Hudson said despite these issues,
the pathway should keep its
character as a mixed-use route.
However, the residents’
association does recommend fast
cyclists use the road cycleway.
“If you’re going at a speed that
you would be comfortable with
on the road, then you need to be
on the road.”
Sarah Kerr is a hand cyclist
with cerebral palsy who wants
pedestrians to be understanding
of cyclists who are not
comfortable using the road
cycleway.
She has tried riding on the road
before but felt intimidated by the
proximity of the car traffic.
“It’s super scary.”
EASE: The Coastal Pathway officially opened last week
and residents such as handcyclist Sarah Kerr are enjoying
utilising the flat route as a way to avoid road traffic.
The issue of cyclists riding on
the pathway has been divisive
online, said Kerr.
“I have been told that all
cyclists on the pathway are rude
and if you’re a cyclist you should
be on the road.”
The hand cyclist finds it safer
to ride on the pathway. Her
handcycle’s top speed on flat
ground is only 8km/h.
“I do try to be aware of who’s
around me. If I see somebody
who is going to have trouble, I
either slow down or stop.”
Kerr believes cyclists riding
faster than 30km/h should use
the road cycleway.
Fish n chip
shop fire ‘a
very, very
good save’
by crew
• By Dylan Smits
VOLUNTEER firefighters saved
a Lyttelton fish and chip shop
from burning down after a small
fire broke out afterhours.
Lyttelton fire chief Mark Buckley
credited his crew for their
quick work extinguishing the
flames at the London Fish and
Chips shop before much damage
was done.
“It was a very, very good save
from the boys,” he said.
The fire was caused by a fat
fryer, which Buckley believes
was left on after closing.
At 12.30am on Saturday, staff
next door at Eruption Brewing
noticed smoke billowing out of
the fish an shop’s vent.
They called 111 and a team
of nine firefighters arrived and
put out the small fire within 30
minutes.
“It was very lucky that the
boys from eruption saw it,”
Buckley said.
He also said the incident
serves as a reminder to retailers
to make sure they turn off
appliances after closing.
Cashmere High races to victory
• By Sam Coughlan
CASHMERE HIGH School’s
junior adventure racing team
has won the national Get2Go
Challenge in Tongariro.
The team, made up of three
year 9 students and five year 10s,
were first out of 12 schools after
five days of gruelling competition
– running, biking, kayaking and
problem solving.
They scored 2484 points,
more than 200 clear of secondplaced
John Paul College from
Rotorua.
Cashmere High team coordinator
Mike Bennett said it
was a fantastic week.
“I think anyone would be
proud of this team. They’re really
great to work with, great doing
challenges and amazing outside
competition too,” he said.
The first and only previous
time Cashmere High lifted the
trophy was in 2012, and Bennett
said it’s great to get it back.
“We came close in 2021 when
we finished second, and lots of
these guys have older siblings who
were in that team so it’s good for
them to be able to get one up on
their siblings,” he said.
Despite coming second
to Middleton Grange in the
Canterbury regional event,
Cashmere qualified for the final
after Middleton Grange pulled
out.
“We were a bit lucky to make it,
but I think it showed that
we deserved to be there in the
end,” Bennett said.
The competition began with
three days of problem solving
tasks to earn competition points,
with events like bike limbo,
paddling an upside-down kayak,
and rope climbing.
Teams then competed in two
days of racing across land and
water in a bid to get to the finish
line first.
Staggered starts on the final
day based on existing points
meant no matter what had
happened in the lead-up, the
first team to finish would be the
champions.
And it was Cashmere High,
with Elsie Brown, Katie Chinn,
Ben Coughlan, Finn Groer, Silas
Jones, Greta Prince, AJ Williams
and Anna Wright getting there
first.
DRIVER EDUCATION
Centre lacks extra funds to help
CHOLMONDELEY
Children’s Centre has seen
demand for its services climb
as the cost of living bites.
The centre in Governors
Bay provides free respite care
for children and support for
families.
Centre general
manager
Toni Tinirau
said in recent
years there has
been a constant
demand
for its services.
She said Toni Tinirau
there were
“countless weekly phone inquiries”
and a current wait list
of 51 children.
In the 2022-2023 financial
year 351 children from 295
families accessed the centre’s
facilities. It was an increase
on the 2021-2022 financial
year which saw 331 children
from 267 families, and the
2020–2021 year with 318 children
from 229 families.
Said Tinirau: “The need for
our services hasn’t gone away,
it’s grown. And as the cost of
living puts more pressure on
whānau doing it tough, it’s
only natural there’ll be more
demand.”
The centre has 23 beds to stay
overnight and on average only
17 of these beds are occupied.
“It’s my dream to have every
one of those 23 beds filled
every night. But it’s just not
achievable at the moment
because we don’t have the
funding or the resources.
“The space is there, the
demand is there, we are just
lacking the consistent financial
support. It’ll cost an additional
estimated $250,000 annually
to have all 23 beds filled every
night,” said Tinirau.
Cholmondeley costs $2.8
million to run each year with
20 per cent covered by the
Government. The remaining 80
per cent is generated through
community fundraising.
Said Tinirau: “We have been
looking really closely at how to
raise the much needed funds
for Cholmondeley as it’s been a
difficult time globally to raise
funds for charities.”
She said children are given
round-the-clock care, outdoor
experiences, learning activities
designed to build wellbeing
and resilience, and a fun environment
where they are only
asked “to be kids”.
“The support Cholmondeley
provides doesn’t stop when
tamariki turn 12. It also has
the ‘Awhi Team’ (care team)
made up of social workers,
youth workers and whānau
ora navigators who walk
alongside whānau in their own
homes to address issues they’re
facing.
“We support tamariki coming
from homes where there
could be issues with health,
accommodation, interpersonal
relationships, single-parent
whānau, family violence,
family harm, mental health or
addiction.
“We just need Cantabrians’
help. Do not underestimate
the level of support you
can provide a charity like
Cholmondeley. Never think
that you could never give
enough, because whatever
you can do, however you can
support us, will certainly help
our whānau,” she said.
Watering is fine in
Showstopping Christmas treats
Roasted hazelnut and
espresso tiramisu cream
pavlova
Serves 8-10
Pavlova
6 large egg whites
1½ cups caster sugar
1 Tbsp cornflour
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup roughly chopped roasted
hazelnuts
Tiramisu cream
1 Tbsp instant espresso coffee
granules
2 Tbsp boiling water
250g mascarpone
½ cup cream
4 Tbsp demerara sugar
1/3 cup finely grated dark chocolate
To assemble
300ml cream, softly whipped
Fudgy chocolate sauce (see end)
Hazelnut praline (see end)
Method
Pavlova: Trace a 20cm-diameter
circle on two sheets of baking
paper. Turn the paper over and
place each one on a flat baking
tray.
• Preheat the oven to 120°C
regular bake.
• Whisk the egg whites to soft
peaks, then gradually add the
sugar, one tablespoon at a time.
Whisk until thick and glossy
and the sugar is dissolved. The
mixture should be smooth when
rubbed between your fingertips.
Any undissolved sugar will cause
the meringue to weep.
• Sift over the cornflour and
add the lemon juice, vanilla and
hazelnuts. Using a large metal
spoon, fold into the meringue.
• Spoon half the meringue
into the centre of each circle on
your baking paper, then, using
the back of a large spoon,
carefully spread it to the edge of
the circles, building up the sides
and swirling the top, keeping the
meringue as high as possible.
• Bake for 1 hour, alternating
the trays after 30 minutes.
Turn off the oven and, with the
door closed, leave the meringues
YUM: Two layers
inside to cool completely.
Tiramisu cream: Dissolve the
coffee in the boiling water, then
cool. Place all the remaining
ingredients in a bowl, add the
cooled coffee and very gently
whisk until smooth. Don’t over
mix or it will split and curdle.
Cover and refrigerate for at least
1 hour and up to 24 hours.
To assemble: Gently whisk
the Tiramisu cream and softly
whipped cream together to firmish
peaks. Place one meringue on
a serving plate and spread over
half the cream. Top with the second
meringue and dollop on the
remaining cream. Drizzle with
some fudgy chocolate sauce and
scatter with pieces of hazelnut
praline.
Fudgy chocolate sauce (gf)
Makes 1½ cups
1 cup cream
150g dark chocolate, roughly
chopped (72% cocoa)
2 Tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
Method
• Put the cream in a small
saucepan and heat until just
below boiling.
• Take off the heat and add the
chocolate.
• Leave for 1 minute, then stir
until smooth.
• Stir in the golden syrup and
vanilla and set aside to cool.
Hazelnut praline (gf)
Makes 1½ cups
1 cup whole roasted hazelnuts
1 cup caster sugar
¼ cup water
Method
• Line a greased baking tray
with baking paper and place the
nuts close together on the tray.
• Put the sugar and water in a
clean saucepan over a medium
heat.
• Whisk to combine, then stop
stirring and wait for the sugar to
become golden in colour, swirling
the pan for even colouring.
• Immediately drizzle it all over
the nuts, then leave to harden.
Break into pieces to serve.
Spiced Christmas schnaps
Weihnachtsschnaps
Ingredients
5 cardamom pods, bruised
Peel of 1 orange, sliced and without
pith
250ml (1 cup) high-quality 37% to
40% spirit, such as korn or gin
1 to 2 heaped tsp runny raw honey
½ vanilla bean, split and seeds
scraped out
1 cinnamon quill
1 cassia stick
8 star anise
2 cloves
Method
• Place spices and orange peel
into a glass bottle that will hold
at least 300ml. Add the spirit and
shake. Close the lid and leave to
infuse for 2–4 days.
• Taste daily to see when you are
happy with the infusion. The longer
you leave the infusion, the more the
anise flavour will develop from the
star anise.
• Strain off the liquid, put the
whole ingredients in the compost
and return the infused spirit to the
bottle.
• Add the honey to taste and
shake vigorously to dissolve it,
about 2 minutes.
• Add the vanilla bean and seeds
and swill the bottle to disperse the
seeds. Let this infuse for at least
another week before serving.
• You can then either remove the
vanilla bean or leave it to continue
infusing.
• Store indefinitely in your drinks
cabinet.
