MESSAGE TO MP NICOLA GRIGG: ‘PUT THE NEEDS OF THE CHILDREN FIRST’
Schools angry speed limit
drop delayed by Govt
• By Daniel Alvey
SCHOOLS ARE furious they
will be left waiting again for
30km/h speed limits and want
new Government Selwyn MP
Nicola Grigg to step in.
The new National, Act, New
Zealand First coalition Government
sent a letter to all councils
advising them to pause work on
speed limits until the Government
has developed its new
speed limit setting rules with
NZ Transport Agency Waka
Kotahi.
Twenty-six schools in Selwyn
would have had either variable
speed limits or permanent
30km/h limits added in the
council’s speed management
plan, with some of the changes
made before schools reopened
in the new year.
Two of the schools left waiting
are Lincoln Primary School and
West Rolleston Primary School.
Both have been waiting years for
changes and now have no idea
when the lower speed limits will
arrive.
Both schools have 50km/h
speed limits outside their
schools and want that permanently
replaced with 30km/h
limits.
Lincoln principal Chris
Nord and West Rolleston
principal Sylvia Fidow are
calling on Grigg to step in and
get the changes made as soon
BUSY: West
“As a local MP, I would love
to see her (Grigg) put the needs
of the children in Selwyn first,”
Fidow said.
Residents group continues
to fight huge subdivision
• By Daniel Alvey
A GROUP of residents fighting
the huge 1710-section Lincoln
South subdivision will call for
a judicial review if the council
does not answer its questions
about the District Plan process.
Advocacy group Lincoln
Voice had been opposing the
subdivision as part of a private
plan change appeal (PC69) to
the Environment Court, but the
appeal was made null and void
in August following the subdivision’s
approval in the District
Plan review.
Lincoln Voice was unable to
appeal the decisions of the District
Plan review because it was
not a submitter to it.
In its Environment Court
appeal, which was never heard,
the group was arguing because
Lincoln South is on highly
productive land it should not be
allowed to go ahead. However, it
is now going after the process the
council used to include Lincoln
South in the District Plan review.
Said Lincoln Voice
spokesperson Denise Carrick:
“We need to be clear now that
EXPANSION: Lincoln Voice is now challenging council
process in its fight against the huge 1710-section Lincoln
South subdivision.
our question and concerns
that we are raising with the
council and potentially through
judicial review
is not about
the application
of NPS-HPL
(National Policy
Statement
– Highly
Productive Land)
Denise
Carrick
anymore, but it is
about the process
and advice that
the council used when they
decided to take over the zoning
of PC69 land from the developer
and make it the council’s own
plan change.”
To assist in its fight Lincoln
Voice has engaged the services of
RA Law, which asked the council
a series of questions, but Carrick
said the response was unsatisfactory.
“Lincoln Voice has employed
the services of a barrister over
the last couple of months as we
were at a loss as to where to go
next with the whole situation
around the appeal against PC69,”
Carrick said.
Carrick said RA Law had
advised them not to comment on
the council’s response because it
was provided without prejudice.
Lincoln Voice also wants to
have the land for Lincoln South
marked as under appeal because
the Environment Court appeal
is just on hold and has not been
withdrawn.
Council acting executive director
of development and growth
Robert Love said the council was
happy to meet with Lincoln Voice.
“The process around Plan
Change 69 was an unprecedented
and complex situation involving
multiple planning processes,
each with their own legal
requirements, so if Lincoln Voice
does have further questions or
information they would like,
we’d encourage them to let us
know and we’re happy to meet
and answer those,” Love said.
Love did not respond to Selwyn
Times whether the land for
Lincoln South would be changed
to under appeal.
Grigg told Selwyn Times
stopping blanket speed limit
reductions and starting work on
replacing the speed limits rule
to balance safety with efficiency
is a priority in the Government’s
100-day plan.
“Work has
already begun
on a new rule,
which will
ensure that
when speed
limits are set,
economic
impacts and the
views of road
users and local
communities are considered,
alongside safety,” Grigg said.
She said work has started on
the variable speed limits around
schools.
“Safety around schools is a top
priority for this Government
and we have begun work on the
new speed limit rule to ensure
variable slower speed limits
on roads approaching schools
during pick up and drop off
times when there is heightened
risk.”
Fidow did not think variable
speed limits were going to
work and wanted a permanent
30km/h speed limit.
Grigg did not respond to both
schools’ concerns about wanting
permanent lower speeds instead
of variable limits.
She also did not say whether
the council
would receive
any Government
funding for the
increased cost
of installing
variable speed
limit signs.
In last week’s
Nicole Reid
council meeting,
Rolleston Ward
councillor Nicole Reid was also
critical of the Government’s
direction for speed limits.
“I can’t believe when we are
finally able to progress these
speed limits another setback has
been put in place by the current
Government,” Reid said.
Reid went on the attack against
Minister of Transport Simeon
Brown.
“Some facts for the current
Government, particularly
Simeon Brown. Increasing
productivity by increasing speed
limits will not work in the long
term. It is a fact lowering speed
limits saves
lives. It also
is a fact that
building more
roads leads to
more congestion
which in turn
means traffic
Sophie
McInnes
speeds around schools.
will go slower.”
Reid’s biggest
concern was
“These policies mean more
children will be driven to and
from school which has long-term
consequences,” she said.
Also opposing the new
direction was Rolleston Ward
councillor Sophie McInnes.
“This new Government
promised us evidence-based
policy and costed economic
efficiencies. They have literally
asked us to go back and do it
again in a few months, which is
ridiculous,” McInnes said.
McInnes and Reid said they
were unsure if they would raise
the issue with Grigg or Brown.
Despite the Government
halting the changes, there
was likely to have been fewer
proposed speed limit changes
implemented in Selwyn anyway,
following public consultation on
the council’s speed management
plan.
In the report that never got
tabled, it had recommended
implementing the changes for
schools and town centres but
deferring work on district-wide
changes of many rural roads
due to a lack of community
support.
For rural roads, 90.2 per cent
(911) responders to the council
consultation wanted the speed
limits to stay at 100km/h and
for urban roads, 69.9 per cent
(679) wanted the limits to stay at
50km/h or 60km/h.
Hall and Tawera Hall all have
low utilisation, putting them at
risk for divestment.
Councillors agreed to staff
undertaking assessments of the
12 community centres and halls,
which have low utilisation and
low revenue, with the intent
of understanding their place
within the community and the
potential for alternative arrangements.
This could include sale,
lease or demolition.
The assessments will
include understanding the
ownership and status of the
land, compliance requirements,
community interest and
social benefit, revenue and
expenditure, condition of
buildings, proximity to other
council facilities, and the
demographic profile of the
community.
If the halls are deemed not
to have enough use or are
considered too costly to operate,
the council will look to divest
them.
Of the 12, eight are in the
Malvern Ward. Councillor Lydia
Gliddon said council needed to
assess the halls strategically.
“We need to
take a strategic
approach to
look at what
we have, the
condition and
what investment
is needed.
beyond just the utilisation will
show the public good of the
facilities.
“For a rural community, it
may not be hitting the targets,
but the community factor and
social licence has an immense
value to our smaller towns, these
are important landmarks for our
communities, typically built by
our local people,” Gliddon said.
Of the halls, Hororata, Sheffield,
Doyleston, Greenpark and
Lake Coleridge only get four to
10 hires per year.
Mead, Southbridge, Killinchy,
and Tawera have a single user
group with weekly use, often at
a historic special rate, and less
than five times per year outside
of a single user, generating little
revenue.
Arthurs Pass, Castle Hill,
Halkett, Kimberley, and Courtenay
have an operating budget
but do not generate any revenue.
Real estate agent Brendan
Shefford said there would be a
market for the halls if they were
put up for sale.
“It would depend if there was
land zoned for subdivision,
you’d have a developer who
would buy it.
“There also may be people
looking to buy it to convert it
into a house.
Shefford said there could
also be church groups or hiring
groups for things like weddings
which could also look to buy the
halls.
24/7 trial to
• By Daniel Alvey
TRIALLING OF the 24/7 model
at Rolleston Police Station will
continue into the new year.
The six-month trial started
in May. It meant a public safety
team, based in Rolleston, would
be on duty 24/7 to be called out
to incidents in Lincoln and other
areas that previously relied on oncall
officers.
“So far, we are seeing a positive
difference and the trial will
continue into the new year for
further consideration and review.
The future of the model will be
discussed in the new year,” said
Canterbury rural area commander
Inspector Peter Cooper.
“Due to the nature of the trial,
while there was a suggested timeframe,
there was no set deadline
for it to finish.
“We continuously assess the
trial, including talking with staff,
the community and local council,
and will commence discussions
regarding a review nearing the
end of the trial.”
The 24/7 model meant some
awarded
for Right
Track work
• By Daniel Alvey
LINCOLN VOLUNTEER Fire
Brigade has been awarded for its
work in helping people become
better drivers.
The brigade has been working
with The Right Track programme
for 11 years, sharing what they
do as brigade members, what it is
like to go to accidents, and how it
affects them personally.
Brigade members also place
drivers in a crashed car and simulate
the experience of being cut
out of a car.
The brigade was recognised for
its work by Fire and Emergency
New Zealand, receiving a striving
to succeed award.
Chief fire officer Richie Bee
said The Right Track programme,
which targets those apprehended
for driving offences, has a success
rate of 80 per cent.
“The emotional speeches they
(the offenders) give at the end are
pretty amazing,” Bee said.
The national programme
was developed by Eduk8
Charitable Trust, and is also
supported by judges, police, St
John and district health board
trauma teams.
Get-together hits Garden property not for
the right note ‘the faint-hearted’ passed in
• By Sasha Watson
SCHOOL PUPILS, big bands,
jump jam, community and
Christmas carols came together
in an event organised by the
Anglican Parish of Ellesmere,
and Southbridge Primary.
The Southbridge community
carols saw more than 100 performers
take to the stage.
Said event co-organiser and
Ellesmere Anglican Parish vicar,
Reverend Margaret Neate: “The
event went very well. It was
nice to see the children get an
opportunity to perform, and the
best part was the involvement
of both schools and the community.
“It was our first time running
the event post-Covid. I’ve had
parents say they hope it happens
again next year.
“I’m really pleased as a parish
to do something for everyone to
enjoy.”
The free event saw two Ellesmere
Big Band members stand
in for the rest of the band due to
Covid. They started the evening
by accompanying the church
choir members for O Come, All
Ye Faithful.
There were several performances
from the school’s kapa
• By Catherine Masters
A LANDSCAPED garden
deemed of international
significance was passed in at
auction, but Bayleys agent Chris
Jones said it’s not because it
wasn’t spectacular.
“It’s an absolute masterpiece
but requires a special kind of
buyer,” he said.
Several interested parties were
doing their homework on the
potential purchase of Broadfield
Garden – nearly 5ha of lush lawn
and native plantings on Selwyn
Rd, Rolleston, that represent a
30-year love affair by the seller.
Jones said the auction campaign
had so much interest it was
“ridiculous” with dozens of people
turning out to open homes
and as many as 150 people there
one day. But while a lot of people
were looking, the scale of the
property was not for the fainthearted,
he said.
The garden was established by
David Hobbs on what was a bare
paddock three decades ago. He
turned it into something so special
the New Zealand Gardens
Trust designated it a six-star ‘garden
of international significance’.
Jones said plantings include
a beech forest, a rose garden, a
TEAM OF TWO: Two
Ellesmere Big Band
members performed; the
remaining band members
had Covid-19.
haka groups and the jump
jam team, who were finalists
in the inter-school national
competition and placed fourth
nationwide.
Said Ellesmere Ward councillor
Elizabeth Mundt, who MC’d
the event: “(There) was a great
turnout, superb weather and
great performances by the children
of Southbridge school.
“The school’s kapa haka group
gave some great performances
and a delightful tribute of
thanks from two of the students
to their kapa haka teachers.”
UNIQUE: Six-star property Broadfield Garden didn’t sell at
auction – it is waiting for the ‘right person’ to come along.
daffodil walk and a kauri forest.
There is also a man-made canal
and a circular sedge pond.
There is no house but there
are two potential sites Jones said
made sense to build on because
while Hobbs built a shed on the
grounds, he never did build a
house.
Jones said a new owner could
build something glorious and
as there were no rules or caveats
would have carte blanche to do
what they wanted within the
resource consent process.
“It just needs that right person
that says here’s 30 years of somebody
else’s work and I’m going to
enjoy that.”
The property, which is now for
sale by negotiation, has an RV of
$810,000 but Jones said buyers
would have to offer “significantly
north” of that.
“When you’re on the property
it’s unbelievable, it really is. It’s
like walking around the Botanic
Gardens but it’s your own. Once
you get there everyone goes ‘oh
my God, I cannot believe this
exists’. It’s just that good.”
Don’t put lives at stake for the sake
of a 15-minute break
SPONSORED
CONTENT
PLANNING A long road trip
across our beautiful country
this holiday season? Please give
some thought to managing your
fatigue while driving.
Driving under the influence of
fatigue is very similar to driving
while impaired from alcohol
or drugs. It can reduce your
alertness and reaction times,
cause you to waver speeds and
lane position and be irritable
with passengers or other road
users.
Driving tired places you, your
family, and other families at risk.
Fatigue is sneaky and can creep
up on you. Some typical signs of
fatigue include regular yawning,
struggling to focus and driving
on auto pilot. Don’t turn up at
your location wondering how
you got there.
Many drivers manage fatigue
through coffee, energy drinks,
opening a window or turning up
the radio. These are only effective
for a short reprieve from fatigue
and can actually make you feel
worse when you stop using these
interventions.
To manage driver fatigue
properly, plan ahead. Schedule
regular 15-minute, fun active
rest stops with the family in
the fresh air, start the journey
refreshed and organise to share
the driving. Passengers, stay alert
to how your driver is coping,
suggest a break, or swapping
drivers.
It’s far better the journey is fun
and enjoyable with the family,
even if it takes a little longer
in our beautiful scenery and
rest stop locations, than end in
tragedy. The majority of holiday
fatigue crashes occur close to
home or your destination as
drivers tend to think they made
it, and switch off.
Feeling tired? Take a break
and manage driver fatigue, get
there safe and enjoy the holiday
season.
Don’t put lives at stake for the
sake of a 15-minute break.
Glow ho-ho: Grotto a hit
• By Sasha Watson
WHAT DO a few tyres,
the Cookie Monster, and a
stormtrooper have in common?
They make for worthy Christmas
trees and festive decorations,
which were enjoyed by
more than 1100 people walking
through Rolleston’s inaugural
Christmas Tree Grotto, held by
Rolleston Hope Op Shop.
The overall best Christmas
tree title went to the Boulevard
Village, with its train and Star
Wars-themed stormtrooper tree.
Said op-shop manager Dana
George: “From traditional to the
more creative, the trees created a
visual spectacle with the lights,
music and interactive displays. It
was a massive hit.
“The initiative was born out
of a desire to fill a void of family
activities during the Christmas
season . . . The organisers are big
on the importance of community
relationships and work hard at
the Rolleston Op Shop to establish
these connections.
“The Christmas Tree Grotto
was a step for us to take to embrace
both issues.”
The 32 trees sat alongside a
gingerbread decorating station,
which allowed children and their
families to unleash their creativity.
“Live carol singers entertained
the evening visitors and everyone
was welcome to sit, chat and connect
over a hot drink and piece of
Christmas cake,” said George.
“The success of our Christmas
Tree Grotto surpassed our
expectations and given the
success, was the start of an
annual tradition.”
Council urged to tighten its belt
Readers react to last
week’s article about
Mayor Sam Broughton
over rates rises next
financial year – up to 20
per cent, or even higher
Can the council afford its
exorbitant expenditure? I don’t
care what the rates rise in
Hamilton may be or any other
town or city. This is Selwyn and
they need to sack the financial
advisers and tighten their belts
like everyone else has to.
As for Mr Broughton saying he
won’t accept any numbers higher
than 20 per cent! He should be
sacked also.
The council needs a crash
course on financial management.
It would be nice to build
all the projects but take a step
back and get your finances in
order.
-Gray Leonard, Prebbleton
Mayor Broughton is just
another wide boy playing the
same tired old political games.
He must think we are all really
stupid. Given the way we are
treated as cash cows good for
being endlessly milked, perhaps
he is right.
To state he wouldn’t stand for
an increase more than 20 per
EXPENDITURE: Readers say they’ve had to cut back on
spending and its time for council to do the same.
PHOTO: GETTY
cent is really grand of him – but
he also couldn’t accept zero.
Does he not realise there is quite
a range between 20 per cent and
zero. Of course he does – this is
the old-fashioned softening up
process. Scare the good folk with
an outrageous figure and when
the increase is only 12 per cent
everyone breathes a sigh of relief
and the council are all good
guys.
It’s all pretty pathetic, really.
Do not councils realise we are
max rating already?
As for subsidising that white
elephant (sports stadium) in
Christchurch – just forget it and
stick to your knitting.
-Dave Davies
It was with complete horror
I read of the proposed massive
rates increase. I realise services
have to be paid for but I am completely
reliant on the pension,
live alone yet paying the same
huge sums as a two-income
family likely on at least three or
four times my income. This is
not sustainable – constant grow,
grow, grow, rates rebates that
have fallen far behind the value
of even one instalment.
There was also a large increase
in council staff this year – where
was the detailed justification?
Council rates have got to the
level where I am past caring
about details of where it’s all
going to be spent. I simply can’t
afford any increases. Cut back on
nice-to-haves like social events/
concerts, no more staff increases
for starters. No amount of warm
fuzzy oldies expos is going to
make up for the misery council
rates are causing some of us.
-Frances Harrison
Well merry Christmas to you
too Sam Broughton, I find it
shocking that you planted the
seed about huge rates increases
just before Christmas.
We’ve all had to cut back
on our spending and time for
council to do the same. A chief
executive getting close to half a
million dollars for a year’s work
is disgusting, no one can possibly
do enough work to deserve
that. All councillors are receiving
excessive pay packets at ratepayers’
expense.
-Janene Smith
A rates increase of the
magnitude suggested is totally
unacceptable. When times
are tough the district council
needs to focus on the basics –
the provision of clean water,
sewerage treatment/disposal,
rubbish collection/disposal
and safe roading, in addition to
the provision of the standard
suite of ratepayer-funded
services.
Any other grandiose schemes
should be shelved until things
improve. Isn’t this what normal
people do with their household
budgets when times are tough?
I also see no justification for
any ratepayer funding for any
Christchurch stadium either.
Apply user pays by surcharging
those in the area who wish to use
this facility.
Promising Foulkes
on fringe of
U19 World Cup
• By Sam Coughlan
DARFIELD all-rounder Robson
Foulkes has broken into the
international arena for the first
time.
The 18-year-old is a reserve
in the squad for the U19 World
Cup in South Africa next month
following a run of good form for
Canterbury U19 in the national
tournament.
Foulkes will not travel to South
Africa but is on standby in the
event of an injury.
He said he was happy to be
part of it.
“I wasn’t involved with the
team for the qualifiers, so I didn’t
really have any expectations.”
Despite not travelling with the
main squad, Foulkes was content
to be named.
Said Foulkes: “You’re never
hoping for an injury, but we’ll
just have to wait and see.”
“Anything can happen and it
would be nice to receive a call.”
Foulkes’ call-up came after
a successful U19 national
tournament, where he captained
Canterbury to a third placing.
He scored 298 runs across six
games, averaging just under 50
with a high-score of 95, while
also taking seven wickets, and
said his form pushed his case for
inclusion.
“I remember thinking to
myself ‘I need to have a good
tournament’ – it would have
been nice to get some hundreds
though.”
He took over captaincy from
fellow Darfield representative
Cameron Paul, who suffered
a dislocated shoulder in
Canterbury’s first game.
Paul was in line to be named
in the World Cup squad before
his injury and at 18 has already
made his senior debut for
Canterbury.
Foulkes said he is a massive
loss.
“It’s gutting for him, he was
vice captain (for the World Cup
qualifiers) so would likely have
been in that team.”
And looking long-term,
Foulkes wants to join his
older brother Zac in the senior
Canterbury team.
Said Foulkes: “That’s definitely
a big future goal for me.”
“Firstly I want to cement
myself in the Canterbury
Country squad for the Hawke
Cup and make a few appearances
for Canterbury A.
“Whatever happens after that,
happens.”
For now, he’ll just be keeping
himself fit and ready if the
call comes to fly to South Africa
next month.
EIGHT PLAYERS from Tai Tapu
Golf Club are gearing up to play
four rounds in one day.
The team are joining other
keen golfers across the country
in the endurance event known as
The Longest Day, a nationwide
fundraiser held in support of the
Cancer Society.
Players will tee off at sunrise
on January 9 and play through
to sunset, aiming to complete 72
holes of golf.
“We’re no spring chickens as
we range in age from 56 to 70,”
said Adrienne Shadbolt, who is
part of the eight-player team.
RUNS: Robson Foulkes in action for Canterbury U19s
against Northern Districts. PHOTO: EMMA BREITMEYER
Golfers set for Longest Day cancer fundraiser
“The most that any of us have
played before in one day is 36
holes. Hopefully, the weather
will be kind; a 30+ degree day or
cold rainy day would increase the
challenge dramatically.”
All funds raised by the volunteers
will go straight back into
the community, to cover services
such as transport to treatments,
counselling for whanau, and
research.
The Cancer Society says that 71
New Zealanders are diagnosed
with cancer every day, and Shadbolt
is no stranger to these stats.
“Cancer will eventually touch
us all, whether directly or indirectly,”
she said.
“My own mum in Ireland is
currently undergoing chemotherapy,
so when the call came
out for volunteers I was very
happy to put up my hand.
“She is lucky that she has
my brother and sister close by
and they are able to take her to
her treatments. However, not
everyone is so fortunate.”
LINCOLN LIZARDS: Winners of the under 5s development triples Dave
Foskett (left), Simon Moriarty and Steven Bryce.
Successful season for
Lincoln lawn bowlers
Lincoln Lawn Bowling Club
has had a very successful
pre-Christmas season in
Canterbury Centre and
Ellesmere Bowls Sub Centre
events. The club’s men’s match
committee convener Bruce
Gemmell reports
IN THE senior men’s events on Saturday
mornings, the 3x4 team won their section
and played Darfield who beat them in a
playoff. Both teams will be promoted to
division 1 next season.
In the women’s 2x4, Pennantour ladies
were third in division 1.
Lincoln had three teams playing in the
“any combination”pairs, on Wednesday
evenings. While very competitive they had
mixed results. Lincoln Black did the best
of these teams with five wins, but Bowls
Papanui beat them on a countback to
progress.
In the centre seven’s events, the seniors
made the semi-finals and under 5’s the
quarterfinals.
The over 60s played in a Tuesday
morning competition with the Lincoln
Black and the Lincoln White teams
winning, the green and red teams second,
and the blue team fourth.
The under 5s Saturday morning triples
teams performed well. In division 1 the
Lincoln Lizards team of Steven Bryce,
Simon Moriarty, and Dave Foskett won
against Rangiora 1, and in division 2 the
Lincoln Tigers team of Marty Braithwaite,
Brian Hunter and Jane Anderson were
runners-up.
In the under 5s Thursday evening pairs
division 1, the Lincoln Lizards team of
Simon Moriarty and Steven Bryce were
runners-up to Papanui Club and in
division 2 the Lincoln Lemurs team of
Craig Anderson and Glenn Sagar were
also runners-up against Belfast.
Lincoln has five under 5s players in
the Canterbury Development team:
Jane Anderson, Jayne McKay, Shannon
Keoghan, Simon Moriarty and Steven
Bryce.
The Lincoln Club has also had a
successful season in Ellesmere Centre
events. They have won the Ellesmere
Cup, with Lincoln 3 beating Akaroa in a
playoff. The Chatterton Cup was won by
the Lincoln Tuis and the Rooster by the
Lincoln Red team.
The Ellesmere women’s singles was won
by Valmai Hantz and the pairs won by
Barbara Coetzee and Jayne McKay. The
men’s pairs was won by Neville Lancaster
and David Williams.
Post Christmas, from Monday, January
22, we have the ever-popular community
bowls nights for six weeks. We have up to
128 bowlers playing in this event.
Well done to all participants and a
special thanks to our selectors, coaches,
umpires, caterers, website operators and
from Mayor Sam
I love Christmas for the tradition and carols, scorched almonds and the start of
a summer break. Our amazing district has such a diverse mosaic of cultures,
traditions and stories that enrich our neighbourhoods.
No matter what your background Christmas is something for all of us. Whether it’s
a simple public holiday to spend time with your friends and whānau or to connect
in a church and the meaning of Christmas. I hope over the next month you get
some time to slow things down and spend quality time with people you love and
reflect on the year gone and the year that will be.
Waikirikiri Selwyn has so much to offer in the summer, Liz, Elliott, and I will be
taking some time to enjoy the warmer weather and find or revisit some favourite
spots for a dip in one of our rivers. We wish you and your family and friends a very
safe, restful and merry Christmas.
Mayor Sam
Keeping Dogs Safe this Summer
At this time of year toxic algae starts appearing in our waterways. Dog owners should
be aware of it if they are walking their dogs by rivers, streams, ponds and lakes.
Potentially toxic algae (also called cyanobacteria) is a naturally occurring algae with
the potential to bloom in our waterways, producing toxins that can harm or even kill
dogs, people and other animals.
Animals can get very sick if they ingest cyanobacteria. Unfortunately, dogs love the
musty smell of potentially toxic algae and are naturally drawn to investigating it —
usually by licking or eating the material. It can be quick acting and fatal to dogs. The
best way to keep your dog safe is to keep them out of water that may have toxic algae
in it.
The algae typically presents in rivers as dark brown or black mats, with a slimy or
velvety texture and a musty smell. These mats can detach and cause rafts in the
water. In lakes, it is often suspended in the water. The algae can make water look
cloudy, discoloured, or like it has small globules in it.
Cyanobacteria poisoning symptoms
Symptoms of cyanobacteria toxin poisoning in animals include lethargy, muscle
tremors, fast breathing, twitching, paralysis, and convulsions. If you suspect your dog
is suffering from cyanobacteria poisoning, contact your vet immediately.
For humans, if you have been in contact with water containing cyanobacteria,
you may experience tingling or numbness around the fingertips and/or mouth,
breathing difficulty, gastrointestinal symptoms, or skin rashes. If you feel any of these
symptoms after contact with a waterbody, seek medical advice from your doctor or
contact Healthline on 0800 611 116.
Teddy Bears' Picnic back for a Fun-Filled
and Eco-Conscious Summer Event
Summer in Selwyn just got a
whole lot cuddlier with the return
of the beloved Teddy Bears' Picnic.
The event, which has become a
highlight of the season, regularly
draws in crowds of over 1700
children and adults, accompanied
by a delightful array of teddy
bears. Held in Rolleston, this year's
picnic promises to be an even
more fantastic family day out,
blending fun and environmental
consciousness through the Selwyn Event Sustainability Initiative.
Beyond the gathering of teddy bears and their companions, the Teddy Bears'
Picnic is taking a step towards a greener future. Bring along your favourite
mug and indulge in delicious coffee from The Coffee Lady Ltd. Plus, your
reusable mug might just win you an incredible prize in a special giveaway.
The Council’s Senior Advisor Community Funding and Events Stefanie
Banbury said “We’re proud to be embracing sustainability at this year’s
event. We have a diverse range of food choices carefully crafted by
vendors committed to eco-friendly practices and the dedicated team of bin
ambassadors from Without Waste (WOW) are also back to guide people
in sorting their waste, contributing towards making a positive
environmental impact”.
As well as an amazing line up of entertainment on the main stage, the Pony
Parties & Farmyard Friends team are back to introduce your teddy bears to a
delightful array of animals, from rabbits and guinea pigs to mini goats, ponies
and lambs. For those seeking an adventure on wheels, Pedalmania brings a
collection of strange, clever, crazy, and bizarre pedal-powered bikes, and join
the team from House of Bricks and Rachel from LEGO® Masters NZ Season
2 to build an amazing creation. It's a chance to let your imagination run wild
while creating lasting memories.
Join in on all the family fun on Wednesday 17 January 10.30am–1.30pm at
Discover one of Selwyn’s Hidden Gems
by the Water
With the hot weather on its way, summer swimming offers a perfect escape
from the heat and Selwyn has some great local spots.
Picturesque Lake Pearson surrounded by the Southern Alps just off SH73 is
known for its calm atmosphere. It’s an ideal get-away location for relaxing in
a natural setting.
Lake Lyndon, near Porters Pass is one of Selwyn's colder lakes, so come
prepared for lower temperatures. If the cold isn't your thing, explore
alternative activities like jetboating, paddleboarding, or birdwatching on
the lake.
Rakaia Gorge, with its natural beauty and turquoise waters, is an ideal spot
for a summer swim with friends and family. It also provides opportunities for
kayaking, fishing, and picnicking.
Alternatively, keep kids of all ages entertained at a variety of Selwyn’s
community pools including Darfield, Southbridge and Sheffield. The
Leeston Learner’s Pool is also perfect for families with young kids, and
the Selwyn Aquatic Centre offers something for everyone — five pools,
inflatables, paddleboats, and other fun events. Beat the heat and make a
splash this summer!
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Former banker now cuts a track
on Motukarara racecourse
Victoria Bryant is the
track manager at
Motukarara racecourse.
Dave Di Somma
catches up with her
IN A SHORT space of time
Victoria Bryant has come a long
way.
In her words the former banker
“fell into” her job as the track
manager at the Mot racecourse
and now can’t imagine working
anywhere else.
“This is my fourth season now,
it is a real job and I really love it,”
she said.
“I couldn’t even put the PTOs
on a tractor when I started.”
Now, the routine of hitching
up the blades and manicuring
the more than 1800m of track is
about as second nature as it gets.
“There’s a bit of real estate
alright. What I would call a race
day mow can take anywhere
between five and five and a half
hours.”
She had no formal qualifications
or training before taking
up the job, though she’s always
been round horses. A competitive
rider for many years she still
has four horses at her property in
Ladbrooks.
“I lost my job (in the bank) due
to Covid and the track manager
here had resigned and my dad
(Geoff) was on the committee.
I was doing some mowing and
helping out when someone said I
should go for the job.”
Along the way she’s learnt a
lot and had support and help
from people like Harness Racing
New Zealand’s track and venue
inspector John Denton; Kevin
McClintock, who’s a key part of
the team at Addington Raceway;
her part-time helper at Motukarara,
Ben Skelton; and the late
trainer-driver, Murray Edmonds.
“I think about Murray every
day I’m out there – he was great
and we used to have a few laughs
too!”
It’s believed Bryant is the only
woman to be the dedicated track
manager at a harness racing
venue in New Zealand, not that
she puts too much store into that.
“Anybody can do anything as
long as you are prepared to put
the work in.
“I’m not trying to be a hero,
I’m doing a job and I didn’t see
myself here, but I am here and
I’m loving it.
“But I couldn’t do what I do at
Mot without the amazing help
and support looking after my
son Roux from my mum and
dad (Wendy and Geoff).”
Unlike some of her thoroughbred
racing counterparts, Bryant
doesn’t use penetrometers or
other fancy equipment, relying
more on “feel”.
“Commonsense is a big part of
it plus asking a lot of questions. I
BALANCE: Despite not having any formal training
in the field, Bryant’s personal experience with
horses helped her land the job. Now, knowing
where and how much to water the grass is second
nature to her.
now know every square metre of
that track and can tell how much
water it needs, and where,” she
said.
It’s all about striking a balance.
Said Bryant: “Ideally you want
a track that is good for the horses
with a bit of give in it but not
enough so the track gets too cut
up. The soil is very sandy and
generally drains well as long as it
doesn’t get too saturated.”
While Bryant has been widely
praised for the racing surface
and the way Motukarara looks
on race day, it has given her challenges.
In November last year the race
meeting was cancelled because
of surface water in the middle
of the track just by the winning
post.
“I felt I let the club down but
really it was out of anyone’s control,
there’d been something like
28mm of rain overnight.”
In contrast, at last year’s
December meeting it was “35
degrees and stinking hot.”
“But it’s easier to irrigate a dry
track. Wet is trickier for sure.”
In recent weeks Bryant has had
some tight turnarounds with
the Banks Peninsula Trotting
Club meeting on November 26
followed by the Akaroa Trotting
Club meeting on December 2.
“So that was two meetings in
six days . . . we did the assessment
after the first meeting, then
there was mowing, repairing
divots and other manual repairs,
plus the irrigation . . . it was all
go.”
Right now is peak hour for
Bryant, with the December 29
meeting by far the biggest of the
year. It can attract up to 8000
people on course.
“During the busiest times of
the season I can work 14-16 days
straight and then during the
winter sometimes all it takes is
10 hours per week.
“But even when I’m not
working I’m often thinking
about it!”
Things to do on a budget:
Luckily, Selwyn has plenty of amazing
things to do that don’t need to cost a lot
of money.
• Visit Te Ara Ātea or one of the local
libraries. They have a great range of
organised activities and services for the
whole family, including Board Games,
Puppy 101, Preschool Storytimes,
LEGO® Time, and Children’s Book and
Board Games Club. Also, spend time in
the Te Ara Ātea outdoor sensory space
with its pergolas, raised gardens with
edible plants, outdoor instruments,
water and colour features.
• Make a picnic lunch and take the
family to some scenic, easy-to-access
picnic spots around Selwyn. Try
Whitecliffs Domain (Glentunnel), Liffey
Stream, (Lincoln), Hororata Reserve,
Rhodes Park (Tai Tapu), The Willows
(near West Melton), Kakaha Park
(Prebbleton), Klondyke Corner (Arthur’s
Pass), Rakaia Gorge Walkway (Rakaia
Gorge), Coes or Chamberlain Ford
Reserve (Springston). Of course, don’t
forget the Teddy Bears Picnic on 17th
January at Brookside Park Rolleston.
If you want to try other areas around
Christchurch, consider Orton Bradley
Park, The Botanical Gardens, Halswell
Quarry, The Groynes or Spencer Park.
• If you’re looking to cool off from
the warm days of summer, try
Selwyn Aquatic Centre with its five
pools or local community pools:
Darfield Swimming Pool, Sheffield
Memorial Pool, Southbridge Pool,
Leeston Learners Pool, Killinchy Pool,
Halkett Pool or the nearby Templeton
Community Pool.
Discover some of the incredible benefits of
HOME PROFESSIONALS
Cleaning emergency
– trialling the BBQ
Pantry Challenge!
Before
• By Isabelle Teresa
You’ve finally signed off work after a frantic
few months, and summer vibes are calling.
But on hearing that BBQ guests are arriving
this afternoon, a horrible thought strikes.
Nervously you approach the BBQ, prise open
the lid, and your worst fears are confirmed
– Gargggghh! You never cleaned the damn
thing after, well, whenever the last time was!
There’s no time to dash to a hardware store
and invest serious dollar in the multiple, BBQspecific
contraptions and products that proper
adults have.
You’ve got one thing only – your pantry and
your wits. (Well, ok, that’s two things, but you
get my point.)
Stay calm and get gathering – the essence of
the BBQ Pantry Challenge is that almost every
household has almost all these things.
For the heated grill:
1. An ordinary white onion, or a potato, or a
lemon
2. Salt – table salt is fine, otherwise the
coarser the better
3. Any cheap cooking oil
For the BBQ itself:
1. White vinegar
2. Baking soda
3. Old clothing cut up into rags
Full disclosure
Confession time: this happened to me and as
you can see, the BBQ was in quite a winterabandoned
state. But I trialled the Pantry
Challenge anyway, and here’s the results, from
best to worst.
White vinegar and baking soda: fantastic
cleaners, as always. Dealt with grease and
moss (!), everything except rust.
Lemon & salt: rubbing this combination of
acidity and abrasiveness onto the grill stripped
the burnt gunk like a dream.
Onion: Its antibacterial properties broke down
the encrusted grime, the essential oils added
non-stick coating – and it smelt good.
Potato & salt: dunk the cut potato in oil to
keep it moving, then in salt for abrasion. Not
only does this remove the nasties, the starches
create a natural non-stick layer.
Overall verdict
While I’d love to say that the Pantry Challenge
saved the day, to be honest, I’d set it too hard a
task. With guests looming I had to call it, and
we got out the wire brush. But the methods
did make a real difference, you just need a
less-disastrous starting point.
So, hard-out emergencies no, but cleaning
maintenance, oh yes.
HOME PROFESSIONALS
Christmas Trees:
a Southern Hemisphere take
• By Isabelle Teresa
There are multiple reasons why people
may not want a Christmas tree inside
their home, whether it’s needle-drop
from a real tree or the hassle of storing
then rejuvenating an artificial one. Not to
mention all the cats vs Xmas tree videos
that are circulating right now!
And it is very much a Northern
Hemisphere tradition. In the depths of
winter, people brought evergreen boughs
in their home, to remind them of new life.
We’re in the Southern Hemisphere – at
this time of year we’re called to be outside
in the long balmy evenings, not huddled
inside for light and warmth.
So for an alternative Christmas tree, how
about lighting a living one, outside?
This is an awesome way to celebrate a tree
that you already love within your garden.
And it fits naturally with where we want
to be at this time of year. A lit tree outside
will draw people to it, creating a new space
for socialising and relaxing.
It is also an inexpensive way to contribute
to neighbourhood festive cheer, without
having to invest in external decorations
that you can only use for a few weeks.
Best of all, it can be very simply and
cheaply done. Safe outdoor lighting is
readily available in multiple stores. It is
usually LED, so very cheap on electricity.
Very few lights are needed and they don’t
even have to be Christmassy.
By combining one or two larger uplights
(which could even be a shed worklight)
with a few smaller accent lights of your
choice, enchanting effects can easily be
created. As the evening darkens, the scene
will deepen in intensity.
Play around with lights at different
angles. Plan for whether people will
be sitting by the tree or standing and
moving around, and position the lights
accordingly to not blind or dazzle.
Leaving these lights up over the holiday
period means you can enjoy them in
multiple moods. Many external lights
are colour-changing now, with easy-touse
remote controls, so you can change
the tree’s appearance each night with the
touch of a button.
So if there’s a tree that you already love,
dress it up for Christmas! You’ll have extra
special memories of it all the year round.
efresh your home –
hen wonder why you waited!
Before
It’s a real celebration moment at the
end of each project when we’re standing
with the client and, together, surveying
their freshly-installed, custom-made, new
garage doors. They’re seeing their desired
style, material, colour and finish brought
to life, and the team is feeling rightly
proud of their quality installation.
At that point, we like to whip out our
phones and look again – together – at the
“before” photos.
On being reminded of what they had
previously lived with, the expression
on owners’ faces is usually priceless.
Not only are their new doors sleek and
fabulous, it’s a revelation how the look
and feel of the whole property has been
lifted. Typically they’ll say, “Why did we
wait so long to do this!”
It’s this thrill in delivering genuine
customer satisfaction that has been
driving Mal Hurrell and his team for over
Christmas lights 101
• By Isabelle Teresa
The history
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the
first successful practical light bulb, also
created the very first strand of electric
lights in 1880, hanging strands around the
outside of his Menlo Park Laboratory at
Christmas.
Two years later it was his friend and
business partner, Edward H. Johnson, who
hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light
bulbs together and wound them around
his Christmas tree – they were powered by
a generator!
Lights these days
Modern strings of Christmas lights, and
fairy lights, are now usually LED. There
are choices of mains-powered, battery
operated, and solar powered for outdoor.
In terms of electricity, modern LED lights
are absurdly cheap to run. A typical strand
of Christmas lights draws just 4 watts. A
normal domestic plug socket puts out 2400
watts – so theoretically could have 600
separate strings of lights running from it!
Not only that, their low wattage means
that they are extremely safe. Even if left on
all night – or all week – they cannot cause
fires.
Managing your lights – life hack!
Christmas lights and fairy lights are
beloved by all – except the people who
have to put them up.
Be honest, what was the sight that
greeted you when you opened your Xmas
lights box this year? Did it fill you with
Christmas joy, or make your heart sink?
When the time comes, in a few weeks,
don’t just rip them down and stuff them
in a box (again). Give yourself an early
present for next Christmas by using this
simple method.
1. Cut up a strong cardboard box.
2. Push the plug prongs through the
cardboard, to hold the plug in place.
3. From the plug end, start wrapping the
cable around the box.
4. When you get near the end of the
cable, cut a notch in the cardboard and
slip the cable through that, to keep it in
place.
5. Keep wrapping – you’re now doing
the lights.
6. When you get to the end of the lights,
do the notch trick again for the last
light.
Wrapping the lights from the plug
end first means that you can easily start
hanging them straight away next year,
because it is the lighting end that you’ll be
unwrapping first.
So that top tip is my present to Selwyn –
enjoy, and Happy Christmas!
We Three Kings of Orient Are
• By Isabelle Teresa
What’s Christmas without some feelgood
nostalgia... and now you’ve read
the heading, this very Kiwi Christmas
carol is probably already unfurling
through your head…
We three kings of Orient are
One on a tractor, two in a car
One on a scooter
Tooting a hooter
Following yonder star
Oh, oh
Star of wonder
Star of light
Star of bewdy, she’ll be right
Star of glory, that’s the story
Following yonder star
anti-establishment satire was taking
place.
Part celebration, part mockery, we
loved how Fred Dagg reflected ourselves
– farmers and the kiwi identity in
general. In perhaps the ultimate
tribute, Country Calendar devoted a
mockumentary to him in 1974.
This Christmas carol though, is just a
fun cheeky romp against formality and
seriousness – no churches in NZ can
use the original again!
By the way, I re-checked the original,
and there’s definitely “two in the car”,
even though the numbers don’t add up
to “three kings”. My theory? The one
on the scooter is tooting a hooter –
and bearing in mind that a certain US
restaurant chain hadn’t sullied that word
until the 1980s, “hooter” in 1970s NZ
just meant a properly large marijuana
joint.
Now I don’t want to cast aspersions,
but it would explain the math…
Get your Fred Dagg nostalgia fix at
www.nzonscreen.com
Fred Dagg sang this of course, the
character created in the 1970s by NZ
comedian and satirist John Clarke.
It – and he – has soaked into our
national consciousness. While the
genius of the character guaranteed
that, the parallel rapid growth of NZ
television played its part.
TV launched here in 1960, when
over three-quarters of the population
was urban. Starting with just the
one channel, it beamed out idealised
images of rural NZ. The iconic Country
Calendar began in 1966 and is still
our longest-running programme. In
1969, the boys from down on the farm
released their Chesdale cheese jingle,
and 1971 saw the first locally-produced
rural drama, Pukemanu.
The scene was set. 1973, TV went
colour, and an extraordinary character
started being interviewed on current
affairs programmes. Fred Dagg, with his
instantly recognisable appearance, gave
bizarre observations in laconic deadpan
delivery. He didn’t tell jokes, but we
were laughing out loud.
The power of Summer Solstice
• By Isabelle Teresa
Especially living rurally, we can all
feel it and see it… the days are getting
longer, everything’s growing and we’re
called outside… but what is going on?
The facts
Friday 22 December is Summer
Solstice in New Zealand – the longest
day. The day’s length varies slightly
down the country – Selwyn will have 15
hours and 28 minutes of daylight.
The exact moment of solstice will be
4.27pm. At that point, the sun is directly
above the Southern Hemisphere, giving
us sunlight at the most direct angle
possible.
Dawn and dusk will also last longer,
because the sun will rise and fall at a
shallower angle, taking longer to rise or
set below the horizon.
Why?
As the Earth rotates around the sun,
our tilted axis remains constant in
pointing to the Pole Star. So, over a
year, the sun appears to rise and fall in
our sky, from 23.5 degrees north of the
celestial equator to 23.5 degrees south.
At Summer Solstice, the sun has
reached its southernmost point, and will
appear to stop and reverse direction.
Hence the name which, from Latin,
means “the standing still of the sun”.
What isn’t Summer Solstice?
Interestingly, it’s not the start of the
December-to-February summer season,
it’s not “midsummer”, and it’s not even
the hottest day – our atmosphere, land
and oceans are still absorbing the sun’s
energy and are yet to release it back
as January and February heat. But it
still holds strong symbolism in the
mythologies of almost all cultures.
For Māori
On this day, Tamanuiterā, the Sun,
sits with Hine Raumati, the Summer
Maid who dwells on the land, before
beginning the slow journey back to
Hine Takurua, the Winter Maid who
dwells on the ocean.
For Pagans
From Druids to White Witches,
Summer Solstice is the pinnacle of light,
heat, fertility and love, and celebrations
harness this energy in readiness for
the darkening days poised to begin.
Rituals also encourage people to reflect
– to stand still – and may include
the creation of a meditative altar or
mandala. These use the symbolism of
circles to mark the wheel of the year
turning, and summer fruits, suncoloured
flowers and fire.
For you?
Even though Christmas is so nearly
here, there is something about the
power of Summer Solstice that has
called to humanity throughout time.
How will you observe it?
for their furry friends.
Big Mountain Naturally (Aoraki)
products contain no artificial flavouring,
colouring, preservatives or chemicals. One
of the key advantages of raw pet food is
its nutrient density. Products made from
a range of raw wild meat, including goat,
rabbit, wallaby and possum, as a mix of
raw meat, bones, and organs, provide a
rich source of essential nutrients, vitamins,
Dog available for adoption through
Nightrave Greyhounds
Bud (Opawa Bud) is a wonderful little 5 year old girl and has the
most loving nature. She adores cuddles with people and laps up
as many as you can give her. Bud is sociable with other dogs.
She has been well fostered, is crate trained and used to being in
a home environment. If you want an affectionate loving dog Bud
could be the one for you.
Dog available for adoption through Greyhounds As Pets
Khan (Thunder Hallows) is a happy go lucky boy with a big heart
and lots of love to give. He is extremely snuggly and will jump
up for cuddles. He loves the couch and will try to sit on your lap,
despite his size! Khan is strong on lead but he is treat-motivated
and very trainable and will walk nicely with positive reinforcement.
He loves his walks and would suit an active home where he can go
on hill walks and day tramps. He is great with larger dogs, but not
so keen on the small fluffies. He cannot live with cats.
An all-round cool dude with a love for life and his people, Khan will
make a great mate to go on adventures with, as well as to snuggle
up with at the end of a busy day together.
GARDENING 35
Hoe hoe hoe for a healthy garden
Vegetables
At this busy time of year, routine
maintenance in the garden
can be bottom of the list. Set
aside a few minutes every fine
day to hoe around all
crops, except strawberries.
Hoeing promotes air
circulation, preventing
the ground becoming
hard and less able to
take in water when it
rains.
Peas, lettuce, radish,
turnips, kohlrabi, mustard and
cress, spinach and carrots can
still be sown, while cabbage, cauliflower,
leeks and celery can be
planted in well-manured soil.
Peas, runner and other climbing
beans already growing
should be staked.
Swedes may still be
sown in districts with a
long autumn growing
season. Add equal parts
of blood and bone and
superphosphate to the
soil, and work it into the
top 15cm, before sowing
seeds in drills 1cm deep and
40cm apart. Speed germination
by covering with sacks or planks,
but remove covers as soon as
seedlings appear.
Fruit
Blackcurrants, once harvested,
should have branches that have
fruited for a couple of seasons
removed. That will encourage
strong growth from the base of
next season’s fruiting branches.
Red and whitecurrants can
have young shoots, except leaders,
shortened to about 10cm
long. Do this as the fruit starts to
colour.
The centres of gooseberry
bushes should be
kept open, so remove
any growths crossing
each other. New shoots
straggling along the
ground will be useless
for fruiting, so cut
them to an outwardfacing
bud. Prune as
soon as the crop has
been gathered; it is often convenient
to prune as one picks.
Flowers
Roses are at their best this
month, but care should be taken
PHOTO: GETTY
to remove any malformed
buds and faded
flowers.
Cut rose blooms in the
early morning or late in
the evening and they will
last longer.
Mulching material will
help conserve moisture
in the soil and gradually
rot down into plant food.
Use garden compost, spent hops
if available, lawn clippings or
leaf mould. Spread it evenly, no
more than 10cm thick, and keep
it away from plant stems.
NATIVE TO Australia and New South
Wales in particular, Hymenosporum
flavum is often called the Australian
frangipani.
While not related to the frangipani
genus Plumeria, the reference
to frangipani comes
from the resemblance found
in the bright, sweetly scented
yellow blooms.
This monotypic genus is
closely related to the genus
Pittosporum, with similarities
seen in the foliage.
H. flavum is a fast-growing
tree with slender branches that
typically radiate out from the main
trunk, forming a distinctive pyramidal
shape. Blooming from mid-spring into
summer, this evergreen tree puts on a
magnificent show of strongly scented
tubular flowers.
The hermaphroditic flower, first
functionally male, opens as a soft
cream colour. As the flower ages and
the stigma develops, the colour deepens
into a strong yellow.
The seed pods add another
layer of interest to this tree
species. The hard brown
capsules are filled with layers
upon layers of light paperthin
seeds.
This tree can easily suit even
small-sized gardens due to its
upright, slender structure.
In cultivation, a height of
up to 10m can be reached. H. flavum is
hardy once established, tolerant of dry
areas and wind.
The best display of blooms
appears when planted in a sunny
position, although it can be grown in
shadier areas.
Tips for towing
The summer holidays see many Kiwi
families heading away in their caravans,
loading up the trailer with essentials
for the bach, or getting out the jet ski or
boat to enjoy time on the water. It can
be an exciting adventure, so be properly
prepared to avoid hassles on your drive.
• Check your vehicle’s towing capacity;
not all are suitable for towing caravans.
• Ensure the Warrant of Fitness (WoF)
and registration are current on your
vehicle to be towed.
• Check that all tyres (including the
spare) are inflated to the correct
pressure, have enough tread, and are
not perished or cracked. If possible,
carry a spare trailer tyre.
• Check mirrors and lights to have clear
visibility around the caravan.
• Plug in the electrical connector to the
tow vehicle and have someone confirm
that your indicators, brake lights and
reverse lights are working correctly.
Test your caravan’s braking system.
• Ensure the coupling is secure on the
tow ball and the ball and couplings are
the same size. In New Zealand, two
sizes are used: an imperial 1 7/8 inch
hitch and a 50mm metric coupling, so
they must be matched correctly. Also,
check safety chains are secure.
• Spread a trailer’s or caravan’s load
evenly over the axle. Weight too far
forward exerts excessive downward
pressure on the tow bar, but too far
back can cause the trailer to fishtail or
jack-knife.
• Secure all loads on an open trailer: in
an enclosed trailer, boat or caravan,
stow or tie down any loose gear to
prevent it from moving around. You
must attach a white or fluorescent flag
to a load extending more than one
metre behind the trailer.
Driving tips:
Be mindful of other motorists, as
the maximum speed for a light vehicle
towing a trailer in New Zealand is
90km/h. Pull over when possible and
let others pass. Try to drive when traffic
is less. Keep your driving smooth and
steady, and avoid rapid braking or
acceleration. Allow more following
distance between yourself and the car
in front, as braking takes more space.
Take corners carefully, look ahead
and go wider when turning. If you
are not confident, practise reversing
before you head away. Be aware of
your surroundings, use your mirrors
frequently and drive to the conditions.
Driving and towing a caravan, trailer,
or boat needs careful preparation and
responsible driving habits. Following
these tips can enhance your road
trip experience, making it a safe and
enjoyable adventure for everyone.
The Essence of Luxury, Ideal for Extended Family
Introducing this exquisite residence with triple-car garaging which
truly encapsulates the essence of luxury. Boasting five bedrooms,
three bathrooms, two expansive living areas, and nearly two fully
equipped kitchens, this home redefines opulence.
Upon entering the foyer adorned with distinctive tiles, venture
to the left to discover a private wing featuring two generously
sized double bedrooms and a bathroom. This versatile space can
be easily transformed into a separate retreat ideal for extended
family members seeking their own privacy.
Transitioning to the heart of the home, a sunlit open-plan living
room awaits, seamlessly connected to a stunning kitchen
equipped with a gas cooktop, wall oven, double fridge space and
elegantly finished benchtops and tiled splash-back. The piece de
resistance is the impressive butler’s pantry, featuring a second
gas cooktop, rangehood, sink, ample cupboard space and a door
leading to the outdoors. This feature is particularly beneficial for
large families, offering two distinct cooking areas. The separate
lounge, extending to the expansive rear lawn of the 759m 2
section, is an additional highlight, perfect for family gatherings
and entertaining.
Continuing down the hallway, three more bedrooms unfold, with
two sharing a separate toilet and a tastefully tiled bathroom. The
master bedroom, positioned at the far end of the home, indulges
in a splendid walk-in robe and a luxurious ensuite boasting a
double tiled shower.
The unique layout of this remarkable 265m 2 home is
complemented by a ducted heating system & under-tile heating in
the three bathrooms ensuring comfort all year round. Properties
like this don’t come along everyday so it needs to be seen to be
Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
What to look for at open homes
During an open home, it’s easy to
fall in love with a property when it’s
immaculately presented and looking its
absolute best. However, remove your rosetinted
glasses, see beyond the staging and
consider several factors before making
a significant financial commitment. Be
prepared to take notes and ask the agent
questions about the property. A helpful
idea is to use the open home checklist
available through settled.govt.nz. Here
are some suggestions for your open home
visit.
Before the open home, consider whether
the neighbourhood will meet your
lifestyle needs. Are you near amenities,
schools, public transportation, and local
attractions? Does the neighbourhood feel
safe with a community vibe? Find out
whether the area is improving in value or
if any plans may affect it in future. Is traffic
land parking likely to be an issue?
Inspect the property’s exterior, including
the roof, gardens, sheds, decks, balconies,
and fences. These should be structurally
sound. If the house has piles, assess them
and also the insulation. Also, determine
the house’s cladding and if it is wellmaintained.
Are the gutters and drains
clean and unblocked? Confirm when the
house was last painted and look for rot
in wooden areas. What direction does
the building face, as this will impact the
amount of sun it will get? Remember,
vegetation around the house will require
maintenance and may affect the amount of
sunlight you’ll receive in the house.
Check inside the house thoroughly;
don’t be afraid to open cupboard doors,
turn on lights, open windows, and test
the water pressure by turning on taps
and showers. Do the floors feel level? Are
there any signs of leaks or dampness, and
can you smell mould? Look beyond the
staged furniture and consider the layout
of the rooms and if your furniture will
fit. What energy-efficient features does
the house have, including double-glazed
windows, insulation, heating, and cooling?
Will there be sufficient storage for all
your belongings? Take note of the natural
lighting and ventilation and whether it
suits your needs. Does the home have a
working security system?
Ask for building reports available on
the property. It is a legal requirement that
licensed estate agents let you know about
any property issues that they’re already
aware of. However, do your due diligence
by having a builder’s report completed and
consider an independent valuation. Check
the buyer’s seriousness in selling by asking
when the settlement date is and why they
are selling.
After thoroughly inspecting the house
for any issues and determining if it will
meet your needs, trust your gut instinct.
Buying a home involves emotions, and
being able to visualise yourself living
there is an important factor. Happy house
hunting!
