Pregnant
shark cut
open alive
on beach
• By Melissa Nightingale
HORRIFIC FOOTAGE has emerged
online of a pregnant shark being cut
open alive on New Brighton Beach and
beachgoers rushing to return its babies.
Fisheries New Zealand say it will be
speaking to the people involved about
their responsibilities under the Animal
Welfare Act.
The graphic video shows what
appears to be a mature school shark
being cut open while still alive, with
dozens of baby sharks spilling out on
to the sand.
While footage of members of the
public running handfuls of the pups
to the water was heartwarming, shark
scientist Dr Riley Elliott was concerned
at the inhumane death of the mother.
The video showed the shark being
cut open and its pups spilling out.
“If you’re going to catch a fish and
cut its belly open, the humane thing to
do is make sure it’s dead first,” he said.
“You can see there’s been an attempt
to dispatch the animal by cutting
around its neck. The animal’s clearly in
pain and struggling as they’re cutting
its belly open.”
The disturbing footage shows the
shark thrashing around even after its
throat has been cut, and arching up in
pain as the fishermen slice it open.
Elliott wanted to remind the public
that “fish can’t scream”.
“Fish do have feelings, fish don’t have
a voice – respect them as the animals
that they are.”
At this time of year sharks
come close to the shore to give
birth, and Elliott warned people
to leave them alone
at this time, as sharks
were a keystone predator
in the ecosystem
whose numbers had
plummeted globally.
“While it may be
fascinating, I think
most people agree
they would rather
have seen that mother
swimming off pregnant
with her babies and giving
birth when she wants.”
Seeing people rush to return
the pups to the ocean was a
“positive” side to the video, he
said.
“That’s a nice, respectful
thing that those guys did.”
Elliott thought it was
possible the pups could
survive as they appeared
to be close to full term.
School sharks are fished
commercially and often
used in fish and chips,
but Elliott said noncommercial
fishers should
leave them be.
OVERSEAS visitors are
flocking back to Hanmer
Springs.
While numbers are not
expected to return to pre-Covid
levels for another year, Hurunui
Tourism product development
manager Graeme Abbot said the
town was booming as it gears
up for the summer holiday rush.
‘‘We are seeing our old friends
from Australia back and the
cruise business is keeping us
busy.
‘‘We are seeing some American
business, which we expect
will grow with the new airlines
coming into
Christchurch.
‘‘It is certainly
a lot stronger
than it was.’’
Visitors were
starting to
return from
China, but
Abbot said he
didn’t expect as
Dr Riley
Elliott
many visitors from the Asian
market as four years ago.
While September and October
were ‘‘reasonably quiet’’,
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools
& Spa experienced 9 per cent
growth in November compared
to last year.
December had also started
strongly and accommodation
bookings in the town were
‘‘very strong’’.
Staff recruitment has been
a challenge over the last three
years, but the pools were fully
staffed and operating at the full
50 years. They breed very slowly
and take a long time to get to
maturity.”
Cherie Smillie, who filmed
the video, said she had not
realised at the time the shark
was still alive, and thought
its movements were just postdeath
nerve reactions.
School sharks are an important
part of the ecosystem.
“What I was told happened
was they actually seen it
from the pier, they ran down
and jumped on top of it and
dragged it onto the beach,” she
said.
She was horrified to later
summer hours, he said.
‘‘We are always a bit scared to
say we are fully staffed, in case
someone leaves,’’ Abbot said.
‘‘We have people from all
around the world on our staff,
which is lovely because it adds
something to the environment.’’
Abbot said Hanmer Springs
had a growing list of attractions,
including the alpine scenery.
Two new hydro slides, known
as ‘‘Violet Vortex’’ and ‘‘Waiau
realise the shark was alive as it
was “brutally ripped apart”.
“I think it’s absolutely cruel.”
Smillie said she later saw the
fisherman cutting up the shark
and throwing all the pieces
back into the ocean.
Department of Conservation
marine advisor Clinton Duffy
said the school shark was not
a protected species, with about
3000 tonnes being caught annually
for meat.
“It is unlikely the pups would
survive being released back into
the ocean but there is no harm
in trying.”
A NEW consumer action
group is taking aim at the
two supermarket giants and
promising to lobby aggressively
for lower grocery prices.
The group, which does not yet
have a name, is being fronted
by Sue Chetwin, a former newspaper
editor-turned-consumer
advocate who says it is time for
a “consumer-led response” to
the consolidation that has led
to Foodstuffs and Woolworths
dominating New Zealand’s $22
billion supermarket industry.
Said Chetwin:
“There’s a social
emergency here
that needs more
decisive action
than has been
shown so far. The
issue needs to be
on the new Government’s
‘to-do’ list.
We need solutions now.”
Chetwin declined to name
the other members of the group,
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
New lobby group to hold
grocery commissioner’s
‘feet to the fire’
Sue
Chetwin
saying only that it involves other
prominent figures who “understand
the impact that our failed
grocery distribution market has
had on low and middle-income
New Zealanders”.
She said the organisation is
not affiliated with any political
party or financially backed by
a potential competitor to the
supermarket companies. More
details about the group will be
made public later this month.
Chetwin said the group
will use contacts in the media
and politics to lobby the new
National-led coalition Government
to open up the market and
hold new grocery commissioner
Pierre van Heerden’s “feet to the
fire”.
“He has to start using the powers
he has to fine the duopolists
when they breach the new
mandatory code of conduct,”
Chetwin said, referring to rules
promoting competition and
transparency in supply agreements
that came into force in
September.
It will also push the Government
to expand the legal powers
available to the grocery commissioner
and Commerce Commission
to regulate supermarkets;
“furiously monitor” new pricing
rules; and expose “opaque” or
“misleading” pricing practices.
Chetwin said she envisages
the group working closely with
other activist organisations,
including Consumer NZ and
Monopoly Watch. It will also
work with supermarket suppliers
to “encourage them to speak out
about dubious and unfair practices
which are bad for them and
consumers”.
In 2022, a market study by the
Commerce Commission found
that competition “is not working
well for consumers” in the retail
grocery market, with little prospect
that new competitors could
emerge to challenge the duopoly
of Woolworths and Foodstuffs.
In response, the Labour
government introduced a new
regulator, a code of conduct,
pricing regulations and other
measures to promote competition.
Chetwin said these moves
PHOTO: GETTY
were encouraging but did not go
far enough.
“Prices have continued their
inexorable rise,” she said.
Potential competitors have
been unable to make a dent in
the market, she said.
Woolworths said in a statement:
“Without knowing the remit
and membership of the new
group, we can only make general
comments on their requests to
the Government.”
“We played a constructive role
throughout the market study
process and are already well
under way with implementing
the Commerce Commission’s
recommendations, including
taking steps to remove land covenants
and creating a wholesale
business.”
A Foodstuffs spokesperson
said “We understand the financial
pressure that persistently
NEWS 5
high inflation and measures
to tame it are putting on New
Zealanders. We’ve been working
hard to keep a lid on food inflation,
despite record cost pressures
from here and overseas.”
Foodstuffs added that regulation
should be “fit for purpose”
and reduce the cost of business
and prices for consumers.
“Any further regulatory action
should be preceded by a robust
cost-benefit analysis and assessment
of existing regulation. New
Zealand’s grocery industry is
highly scrutinised and regulated,
with an active and engaged community
of advocates for suppliers
and consumers.”
Foodstuffs said it would
“work constructively with the
new grocery commissioner as
the extensive regulatory regime
takes effect”.
A home swimming with turtles
• By Anna Sargent
DONNA MOOT is an expert on
the shelled creatures, having run
Turtle Rescue and Rehoming out
of her house in Somerfield for
almost 20 years.
She said turtles can live five
times longer than a dog. That
makes it a lifetime commitment,
and most people do not think in
terms of caring for a pet for 50
years.
She has seen a steady stream of
unwanted, injured, and poorly
cared for turtles come through
her door. She even has turtles
brought to her which have been
dumped in the Avon River.
It is a voluntary job she
self-funds and fits around her
full-time working life, but turtle
welfare is a cause she is passionate
about.
Moot’s home is crawling – and
swimming – with turtles, living
in tanks across different rooms
and ponds outside.
“I do remember very distinctly
years ago going to the supermarket
to get some turtle food and
talking to the checkout person
and mentioning at the time I
had 13 turtles. She was quite
astounded by that, and I was
thinking at the time ‘wow I’ve
got 13 turtles’, whereas now it’s
normal for me to have 60 to 70 at
CARE: Turtle rescuer Donna Moot with one of her longnecked
Moot said she would like to
see turtle buyers and sellers have
much more knowledge about the
reptiles and what it takes to look
after them properly.
“We’ve had cats and dogs in
New Zealand for years so people
generally have an idea that, ‘I
have a dog I need to do this, I
have a cat I need to do that’, but a
turtle is quite different . . . People
are getting these little cute things
and doing the wrong thing
without realising. And it’s the
long-term effect on that animal
PHOTO: ANNA SARGENT
that then I see when it comes in
as a surrender or as a stray.”
Moot said long-necked turtles
can live as long as 70 years. She
points out a long-necked turtle
swimming in one of her tanks
called Mozzie who is 46, and
was surrendered after the 2011
earthquake when his owners lost
their home.
She said red-eared sliders – the
most common turtles in New
Zealand – live about 50 years.
“People buy them for their 7 or
8-year-old child and when that
child is 57 or 58 that turtle is still
alive, and that’s the problem, that
people don’t realise what a longterm
commitment it is,” she said.
She said a lot of turtles come
to her that have been bought on
Trade Me, with shell injuries and
deformities, because buyers have
been given incorrect information
about how to care for them.
“I’ve seen one breeder recommend
that it could sit in a tank
on a windowsill with a rock so
the sun goes through – all of
which is wrong. For a start, it
needs a really big tank or it’s
going to get deformed, because
the spine shell gets deformed . . .
people are getting this turtle but
it might only live two or three
years because they’re not looking
after it.”
She said sellers have even
posted live turtles across the
country. Ideally she would like
Trade Me sales of turtles banned.
Trade Me policy and
compliance manager James
Ryan said it was not illegal to sell
turtles through Trade Me.
He said the welfare of the
turtles was covered by the
Animal Welfare Act 1999, so
it is up to people who own
the animals to follow their
obligations under the Act.
Ryan said Trade Me has a
good working relationship with
the SPCA, and if it has concerns
about a listing, or thinks the
Animal Welfare Act might be
being breached, it will pass on
information to the SPCA to
investigate.
He encourages people to
research and think carefully
before buying animals.
Moot said turtles were very
good at hiding if they were
in distress or being kept in
unsuitable conditions.
“Sometimes the turtles I get
in – like one that’s just arrived –
he’s incredibly pale and that tells
me his lighting hasn’t been right,
his food hasn’t been right and he
could live like that for another
year or so but then he could get
really lethargic and he could
actually potentially die,” she said.
Moot adopts turtles out for an
optional fee of $20. She said it
was so rewarding getting turtles
to good homes.
She said if looked after
properly, they can be a
wonderful pet, and she just
wishes people took the time to
work out if turtles were right for
them.
Feminist pioneer Kate Sheppard
also a vegetarian, research finds
SUFFRAGIST, social reformer
and internationally renowned
feminist changemaker are
just some of the words used
to describe Kate Sheppard,
whose leadership was largely
responsible for New Zealand
becoming the first country in the
world to grant women the right
to vote in 1893.
And to these illustrious
descriptors you can also add
vegetarian. Kate Sheppard
enjoyed a plant-based diet, and
she was by no means alone.
“There was a clear link between
vegetarianism and the
women’s suffrage movement
around the world – in fact many
leading New Zealand suffragists
were also vegetarians,” says Te
Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard
House Property Lead Helen
Osborne.
Today Kate Sheppard’s house
– a charming nine-roomed villa
in the leafy Christchurch suburb
of Ilam – is cared for by Heritage
New Zealand Pouhere Taonga
and is open to the public. Part
of Helen’s role is to undertake
research on the life of New
Zealand’s foremost suffrage
leader whose home became the
headquarters of a movement that
brought about profound social
and political change in New
Zealand.
“Kate’s dietary choices were
unusual for her time, with
vegetarians often regarded
as eccentric and against the
mainstream,” she said.
“We can learn more
about Kate’s vegetarian
lifestyle by piecing
together some clues from
her contemporaries who
recorded their thoughts
about their beliefs.”
A good person to start
with is Cantabrian poet,
journalist, activist and
colleague of Kate Sheppard,
Jessie Mackay, who
was never backward in
recording her thoughts on
the evils of eating flesh:
“The miseries…(in the
world) do not come to
us by chance, but by a
system of utterly false
relations of people
to one another and
towards the animal
creation,” she once
Kate W.
Sheppard.
CLIFFORD,
CANTERBURY
MUSEUM.
wrote.
“Jessie Mackay was one of
many people who were challenging
established beliefs of society
– including diet,” said Osborne.
“Increasingly the morality of
killing animals for food was
being questioned.”
Although the White
Ribbon newspaper – the
official publication of
the Women’s Christian
Temperance Union in
New Zealand – never
pushed a vegetarian line
in its editorial content,
it didn’t shy away from
raising questions either.
One correspondent –
JM (possibly Jesse Mackay
writing anonymously,
but not confirmed) –
wrote in a 1908 edition of
the newspaper: “So long
as animals were killed for
food, there must be cruelty
and there must be callousness.
It is a question for all women
whether we can defend our
individual complicity in a traffic
which inflicts untold pain on the
lower creation.”
The reformer’s zeal for change
is likely to have been encouraged
by the position of Ohio-based
leader of the international
Women’s Christian Temperance
Union movement, Frances Willard,
who expounded a ‘do everything’
approach to advocating
change. As a result, vegetarianism,
feminism and temperance –
the prohibition of alcohol – were
all incorporated into the reform
agenda.
“Besides this drive for reform,
there were other factors at play
that influenced the dietary
choices of women like Kate
Sheppard – including spiritual
beliefs,” Osborne said.
“Kate was a devout Christian
and member of the Congregationalist
church, though followers
of the growing Theosophy
movement – whose beliefs
incorporated free thinkers,
spiritualists who drew ideas and
values from Hinduism, Buddhism,
Christianity and even the
occult – embraced vegetarianism
along with an agenda for social
change.”
Plant-based diet was
‘more practical’ for
leading suffragists
• From page 9
Jesse Mackay’s idealism was
similarly fuelled by an almost religious
zeal, which she expressed
in semi-theological terms in the
feminist magazine Woman Today:
“…Eden will never be seen
on earth till women arise and
instruct the merciful generation,”
she wrote.
With these philosophical influences
in play at what was one
of the most exciting times for
women in New Zealand, the possibility
for endless change must
have seemed real, evidenced by
the passing of the Women’s Suffrage
legislation itself in 1893.
In addition to changing philosophies,
spiritual awakenings
and medical ‘evidence’ there was
one other factor that may well
have been a significant influence
in encouraging a vegetarian diet
and lifestyle for women in particular.
Sheer practicality.
“One commentator compared
the idea of ‘labouring in the
kitchen over unnecessary pies
and stews’ with the ‘dusting
of unnecessary vases’. A more
simple plant-based diet and a
less materialistic lifestyle allowed
a woman more time for intellectual
pursuits – so in a very real
sense, a simple vegetarian diet
bought women spare time; and
the option of using it to work for
change,” said Osborne.
Ultimately, it came down to
personal conviction summed up
nicely in the three core tenets of
the Christchurch Vegetarian Society
– the first such organisation
in the country: ‘First, that animal
food is injurious to the human
system; second, that man can
live on vegetable food alone; and
third, that to kill unnecessarily is
cruel’.
Clearly, Kate Sheppard was one
of the many women who came to
the conclusion that a vegetarian
diet and lifestyle was the right
choice.
“It’s fascinating – and also quite
cool in light of evolving dietary
trends today – to think that the
work of New Zealand’s foremost
suffragist and feminist reformer
was fuelled entirely by plant
power,” said Osborne.
“When visitors learn that Kate
was a vegetarian they are often
surprised at how ahead of her
time she was.”
Councillors should explain
vote to silence ratepayers
OUR LABOUR and Green
city councillors voted to not let
ratepayers discuss and decide
what we wanted to do with our
assets.
These parties are meant to be
for the people so I wonder why
they didn’t want to give us a
voice on such an important decision?
Are they afraid we would
make the wrong choice, i.e. not
the choice they wanted? Maybe
they could explain.
This lack of respect for the
community is also reflected in
the excessive cost of new safety
rules for community events like
the Santa parade – 75 per cent of
the cost for traffic management
is outrageous. Volunteers who
helped in the past did a great
job and now we can only have
paid traffic controllers at these
events? This is ridiculous. Why
are they making the cost out of
reach for so many groups, which
in turn stops community events
taking place?
I believe some of the new
regulations come from central
government, but is council
bound by law to accept these
rules? Isn’t council able to contest
this on our behalf?
Why would the former
government want to restrict
High-profile businessman groomed,
abused partner’s teenage daughter
He was a “highprofile”
and successful
businessman. She was
his de facto partner’s
teenage daughter.
One night in 2016 he
showed her a lewd
video on his phone,
sexually assaulted her
and threatened her
when she said she’d
call the police. She kept
the horrifying incident
secret for years but
found the courage to
report the man in 2020.
Senior journalist Anna
Leask reports on the
crime, the court case
and why the man can
never be named
A HIGH-profile Christchurch
businessman has admitted
sexually abusing his partner’s
daughter – but has been granted
permanent name suppression
to protect the victim, and so the
companies he is linked to do not
suffer “negative consequences”.
The man pleaded guilty to
three charges of indecently
assaulting a 16-year-old girl in
2016.
He had initially faced two further
charges of unlawful sexual
connection and having a sexual
connection with a dependent
family member but those were
dropped.
The court heard that the offender
was in a de facto relationship
with the victim’s mother
when the assault happened.
He went to the girl’s room one
night and “spoke to her about
school and then masturbation”
and showed her “masturbation
videos” on his cellphone and
placed his hand on her thigh.
The girl felt uncomfortable and
left the room.
Later that evening the offender
went back to her bedroom and
offered her $50 to “flash”.
She refused and asked him to
leave.
She went to sleep but woke later
when he came into her bedroom
a third time.
“(He) approached the victim
and placed his hand on top of her
pyjamas and touched her upper
leg, breasts and then vagina,” said
the police summary of facts.
“The victim told him to leave
or she would call the cops . . . approximately
two hours later (he)
entered the victim’s bedroom
wearing only a robe.
“He tried to apologise to the
victim – she again told him to
leave or she would call the cops.
“In a threatening manner (he)
stated ‘I wouldn’t do that if I was
you’ and again left the bedroom.”
The man initially denied the
offending, but in August pleaded
guilty to the three charges.
He was sentenced in the
district court by Judge Jane Farish
last month and she released
her written decision to the NZ
Herald.
“For all intents and purposes,
you were in a caregiving role
to her. You had been in a longstanding
relationship with her
mother . . . you were supposed to
West Coasters
Are you living off the Coast and would like to
keep up with the local news and events?
be there as someone to look up
to, a role model, and someone
who they were encouraged to
consider as a father figure,” Judge
Farish told the businessman.
She said showing the teen the
video was “a grooming exercise”.
Judge Farish blasted the man’s
response to the victim when
she said she would call police,
saying it was “forceful” and “an
adult against a child and as a
man against a vulnerable young
woman”.
“She took that as a threat. She
did not know what you were going
to do. From then on, she kept
that a secret until she could no
longer hold that in,” she said.
The man was charged in 2020
and did not plead guilty until
this year, which Judge Farish
criticised.
“The problem with that course
of conduct – you are entitled to
take that – but it locks her into a
court process which is harmful.
Really harmful, because it does
not allow her to move forward,”
she said.
“If you were genuinely remorseful,
you would have put
your hand up right at the beginning
and you would have said:
“I’m sorry,” and you would have
ABUSE:
her when
she said
GETTY
pleaded guilty to those charges.
Judge Farish said she needed to
hold the sex offender accountable
for the harm he had caused and
it was evident the incident has
had a “significant effect” on the
victim that would be “lifelong”.
“It is also in order to deter your
offending, that is, not only to you
personally but publicly, to others
who think sexually offending
against young people, particularly
in a familial relationship, is
appropriate,” she said.
She said given his profession,
lengthy experience and success in
his field the man “definitely knew
better”.
She accepted he had been
drinking and his alcohol consumption
at the time was “most
probably out of control”.
She acknowledged he had
undertaken counselling “for an
excess of 13 months” to address
his alcohol issues and to make
sense of his “serious” offending.
But that did little to explain his
actions.
“The problems in your relationship
are not an excuse for what
you did. The problems with your
financial affairs, again, are not
an excuse for what you did,” said
Judge Farish.
“What you did was, you
were sexually attracted to the
complainant and you acted on
that, and she was vulnerable, and
you hoped that because of those
vulnerabilities, you might be successful.
“You really overstepped both a
moral boundary but also a criminal
boundary.”
The man claimed he was remorseful
but Judge Farish said it
was “too late” given he had forced
the young victim through a
three-year ordeal in court before
admitting the offending.
After considering the facts of
the case, Judge Farish set a starting
point of two years in prison.
The time was reduced slightly
by the guilty plea – albeit late –
and the payment to the victim.
Because the sentence landed
under the two-year mark the
man was eligible for home detention
and Judge Farish ruled that
was an appropriate punishment.
“A sentence of home detention
will have a significant impact
upon you – it will impact you in
relation to your employment,”
she said.
Judge Farish said to minimise
the impact of the sentence on the
man’s business and employees,
he would serve six months home
detention.
He is subject to a further six
months of special release conditions.
Judge Farish then granted the
man permanent name suppression.
She said his application alone
was not strong enough to meet
the threshold to keep his name
secret.
But the victim’s fears of being
identified if the man’s name was
published satisfied her it was the
right decision.
“As a matter of law, she is not
able to be identified unless she
wishes to waive that right to be
identified, and she does not want
that. She wants to be able to move
on in her life.”
Retired builder
looks to sell
huge rock
collection
• By Dylan Smits
THE TINY settlement of
Birdlings Flat is home to New
Zealand’s largest private rock
collection.
But now, Vince Burke says it’s
time to pass on the 10,000 plus
pieces he has in his Gemstone
and Fossil Museum.
The 85-year-old has been
collecting rocks since he started
fishing with his father as a child,
but time is now catching up with
him.
Burke is now looking to sell his
collection, either in its entirety
or as individual items, which he
estimates is worth $650,000.
Burke opened the museum
at his Birdlings Flat property
in 2003 as a way to house his
steadily growing hoard.
With nearly every cabinet and
surface in his bach taken up by
the rocks, a new storage location
became necessary.
“My wife wanted them out.”
He built a museum building
on his property and moved the
collection in.
The same year the museum
opened, at age 65, Burke retired
from his career as a builder.
Since retiring, he has spent
numerous hours hunting for even
RARE FIND: The Gemstone and Fossil museum’s agatised
or petrified log is a unique find. Weighing 86kg, it is the
focal piece of the 10,000-strong collection.
more rocks across New Zealand
to add to his collection.
“The passion only grew since.”
Burke grew up in Addington,
but he often stayed at his family
bach in Birdlings Flat.
During the 1970s, a wave of
interest in rock collecting swept
through the area.
“There was a guy who had quite
a collection in his garage, and I
think that triggered my interest a
bit because I was really fascinated
by the polishing of them.
“I think just the beauty of
a rock, that’s what got me so
passionate.”
Burke built his own bach
in Birdlings Flat in 1971 and
moved in permanently with his
wife Colleen in 2013.
Burke’s main interest is in
agates, a crystal-like, colourful
mineral formed inside rocks
when silica accumulates in gaps.
One of Burke’s most unique
discoveries is a petrified
log, which he says has been
preserved in agate for about 65
million years.
Burke and two other rock
enthusiasts found the log in
2007 while digging for agates
in a creek on one of his regular
rock hunting trips in the
Hororata hills.
“It’s one of the best finds we’ve
ever had. We didn’t know how
big it was until we started to get
it out.”
The monkey puzzle tree log
weighed 86kg due to the agate, so
the trio had to tow it out of the
creek and roll it on to a truck.
Burke said he will likely
donate the log to the Canterbury
Museum due to its rarity as the
only fully intact agatised log
known to him in New Zealand.
Riverbeds are the best place to
go agate hunting according to the
rock hunter.
“What you’re looking for is
a chunk of glass. The glass is
an agate. So it shines and it’s
translucent.”
Burke said exploring areas like
the Ashburton River, Rangitata
River, Mt Barrosa and Mt Somers
have all yielded exciting finds.
Burke doesn’t let his age stop
him from rock hunting. He
regularly goes on trips with his
friends from the Canterbury rock
club in search of new additions to
his collection.
“It keeps me pretty fit and
active, and I really do like getting
out there.”
He is uncertain about the fate
of his collection.
Burke has approached the
Canterbury Museum and Te
Papa about donating it, but says
they told him they do not have
the space.
He also has the desire to leave
an inheritance for his three
children and four grandchildren.
“If I can sell the collection, I’d
sooner leave the children some
money, then a pile of bloody
rocks.”
If he does not find a buyer for
the whole collection, Burke said
he will try donating a few rare
pieces to museums and sell the
rest individually.
SENIORS’ LIVING LIFE
Advertising Feature
Amazing health miracles
from the silkworm
Serrapeptase, an enzyme produced in
silkworms, may become one of the most widely
used natural health solutions for its ability to
replace most anti-inflammatory drugs and
bypass operations. It is nature’s answer to pain,
chronic inflammation and clogged arteries.
Enzymes are essential for life. Constantly
working to build and regenerate the body, they
help digest food, break down toxins and cleanse
the blood, in addition to thousands of other
functions. A lack of enzymes in the body leads
to food intolerances, allergies, digestive issues,
disease and poor health. Studies show that an
average 70-year-old has only 20 percent of the
enzymes found in the body of a 20-year-old.
Serrapeptase is a natural anti-inflammatory
that can clean, clear and reduce inflammation
while dissolving non-living tissue, including
blood clots, cysts, arterial plaque and mucus.
One of its significant benefits is its ability to
reduce pain.
The serrapeptase enzyme was first found in
the intestine of the silkworm in the late 1960s.
The silkworm uses it to dissolve the hard
cocoon, allowing the moth to escape as well as
to digest the tough mulberry leaves it feeds on.
Serrapeptase can now be produced commercially
by fermentation of the microorganism Serriata
E15. Doctors across Europe and Asia prescribe
it.
Over the last 40 years, clinical studies
have shown serrapeptase to have remarkable
benefits in a vast range of health conditions,
including blocked arteries, cardiovascular,
arthritis, asthma, lung conditions, pain,
tumors, autoimmune disease and more. In
Germany, Dr. Hans Nieper clinically researched
serrapeptase and found it could clear blocked
arteries and prevent the need for bypass
operations. U.K. pharmacist Dennis Gore
talked on BBC radio about his dramatic results
with serrapeptase. One case was a man in his
60s who had been a heavy smoker and was
wheeled into his pharmacy. He was breathless
due to emphysema and COPD and could hardly
talk. He was on antibiotics and oxygen and
getting nasty infections. Dennis prescribed him
serrapeptase, three weeks later, the man walked
into his pharmacy with no wheelchair and no
breathlessness and said to Dennis he was no
longer on antibiotics nor oxygen cylinders and
was feeling great.
Serrapeptase has been shown to be a very safe
supplement and, according to researchers, can
be used with most medications. However, let
your doctor know as medications may need to be
reduced or stopped as the need for them reduces.
Congratulations on making your decision to enter
the Les Mills City2surf!
No doubt, the first hint of panic will have set in as your thoughts turn to ‘how are you going to
prepare yourself for this challenge?’ And that is probably why you are now reading this article. This
is going to be as close to employing your own personal coach as you can get….and, it is all for free.
We are presenting two 10 week programmes to you. The first one is for beginners and Les Mills
City2Surf first timers. You consider yourself unfit, probably carry a bit too much around the hips and
waist and you have not played sport for a period of time. The second programme is aimed at people
who are already dabbling in fitness and have some experience with jogging or running. For both
groups the main goal will be to finish the event, enjoy the experience but above all use the 10 week
programme as a means to improve your overall health, fitness and quality of life.
To achieve this goal
you need to develop
some awareness around
the basic requirements
of exercising for health
and fitness. First and
foremost this has to do
with 3 key principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have and 1
session per week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The
duration of your sessions will generally
build towards between 30 and 50 minutes
with one longer session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at?
The good thing about the programme
is that all your runs will be done at
submaximal pace, also called conversation
pace. That means a pace where you can still
talk. If you can’t talk you are going too fast
and you are likely to come to a grinding halt
sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
TiP oF The WeeK
If you have never run or jogged before,
we recommended that you alternate
brisk walking with jogging as indicated
in the schedule. Be aware that jogging
is different from running. When jogging,
you go at a pace which is only a fraction
faster than a brisk walk, your feet stay
close to the ground and the rhythm is
that of a slow dance. This is a technique,
once mastered, which will enable you
to jog for longer periods of time (for
example, the whole 12 km distance..)
Beach volleyball giants
to play in Christchurch
ONE OF the best beach
volleyball players of all
time is set to hit the sand in
Christchurch in February.
American Phil Dalhausser
will compete in the G.J. Gardner
Homes NZ Beach Tour which
takes place in Mt Maunganui,
Auckland, and Christchurch in
January and February.
The outdoor sand courts at the
Pioneer Sport and Recreation
Centre from February 9-11.
Known as ‘The Thin Beast,’
Dalhausser is one of the most
decorated players in history,
having won the American AVP
Tour four years in a row and
winning gold at the Beijing
Olympics in 2008.
Across his 20-year career
the 43-year-old has won 92
individual events, including two
World Championship medals in
2007 and 2009, and he has won
every major beach volleyball
event in the world.
Volleyball New Zealand high
performance beach coach Jason
Lochhead said having the pair in
the country is a massive coup for
the sport – on and off the sand.
“This is an amazing
opportunity for our New
Zealand community to not only
see and meet one of the best
players ever in our game, but a
chance for our players to play
against him as well,” Lochhead
said.
Dalhausser will play alongside
his regular partner, American
Taylor Crabb, who also boasts
an impressive record.
Crabb won gold at the world
tour event in Chetumal, Mexico,
in 2019 and was named AVP
MVP in 2018 and 2019.
Don’t Stop Dreaming
prioritises 4yo races
• By Michael Guerin
DON’T STOP Dreaming may
have sealed his open class
credentials at Alexandra Park
on Sunday night but that doesn’t
mean he will become a big-time
regular just yet.
Because co-trainer Nathan
Purdon says while Don’t Stop
Dreaming is good enough to
compete in a race like the open
class A$500,000 Hunter Cup in
a month’s time, they will target
four-year-old races while they
can.
Don’t Stop Dreaming arrived
in the big time on the last day of
his three-year-old career. Given
a beautiful run by Tony Herlihy,
he blew straight past open class
stars Old Town Road and Akuta
in the $60,000 Lincoln Farms
Franklin Cup.
It was a comprehensive victory
against two of the best pacers
and confirmed what all
harness racing fans have
known for months; Don’t Stop
Dreaming is a Group 1 cups
horse in waiting.
He now heads to Victoria with
stablemate Akuta and while they
could clash again in some open
class races this month, when the
biggest money is up for grabs,
Don’t Stop Dreaming will revert
to four-year-old company.
“He would fit into the Hunter
Cup on February 3 but that is the
same night as the four-year-old
race called The Bonanza,” said
Purdon.
“The Hunter Cup is worth
A$500,000 and the Bonanza
BIG FUTURE: Co-trainer Nathan Purdon says Don’t Stop Dreaming will focus on four-yearold
races for the time being, despite being a clear Group 1 cups horse in the making.
PHOTO: HRNZ
only A$75,000 but the difference
is the Bonanza is an automatic
qualifier for the Chariots Of Fire
(four-year-olds only) in Sydney a
month later.
“That is his big target – the
race we want to win – so he will
go to the Bonanza, hopefully
earn a spot in the Chariots Of
Fire and then head to Sydney to
contest that.”
That will mean Don’t Stop
Dreaming could ultimately take
on his arch rival, Merlin, who is
also being aimed at the Chariots
but trying to qualify via Sydney.
If either of the Kiwi four-yearolds
were to win the Chariots
they would almost certainly
get invited to the A$1million
Miracle Mile a week later.
Akuta was fairly and squarely
beaten on Sunday night but
Purdon says he will improve and
he was chasing the whole race
from his 30m back mark.
“It was always going to be
tough for him, but he will
improve with the race and be
better in Victoria.”
Old Town Road was a brave
second and looks to be returning
to his best now he is home in the
north.
Don’t Stop Dreaming’s win
will also only enhance his
chances of securing one of the
10 spots in the $1 million Race
by Grins at Cambridge on April
12 as he already looks well and
truly in the top five or six pacers
in the country in the slot race
that should attract at least two of
Australia’s best pacers.
Homebush
Lad makes
Reefton
Cup history
WOODEND BEACH trainers
Greg and Nina Hope created
history when Homebush Lad
won the Rosco Contractors
Reefton Cup on Saturday for
the third consecutive time – the
first horse to achieve such a feat.
“He’s a really cool horse.
When he’s on song he’s a lovely
horse to drive. To get three
Reefton Cups is really cool,”
said driver Ben Hope.
Homebush Lad began well
from his 20m handicap. Settling
fifth on the markers
early in a strung out field, Hope
waited patiently for the right
time to move, which came at
1400m when he dashed around
to lead at the winning post with
a lap to go. From there Hope
and the 9-year-old controlled
the race and shot away at the
top of the straight to hold on
and win from Smoke On The
Water and Johnny Mac.
“He thrives on these kind
of circuits. By the time we get
to day three he’s usually at his
best. I was reasonably confident
with him. I thought I’d drive
him like the best horse in the
race and see if it pays off. And
it did!”
Homebush Lad, owned by
Adeline Smith, has now won 14
races and more than $200,000
in stakes.
