Quoz Arts Fest, the region’s highly
anticipated arts and culture festival
returns for its 11th edition on
Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 January
2024 across Alserkal Avenue and Al
Quoz Creative Zone, supported by Al Quoz
Creative Zone, part of Dubai Culture and
Arts Authority, as Strategic Partner. Known
for bringing together art, food, live music
performances and cultural activations in
a single weekend, this upcoming edition
of Quoz Arts Fest features a dynamic and
diverse programme of more than 200 live
performances, art installations and cultural
activations across Al Quoz.
Following 2023’s major headliners the -
likes of Arab stars, Bu Kolthoum and Saint
Levant - audiences can expect another
packed festival line-up, filled with not-tobe-missed
acts in 2024. Big Hass, a Dubaibased
hip-hop DJ famous for his electric
sets, will return to the festival as emcee
and show-runner. Sudanese fusion artists
MarSimba will be back with their mix of Sudanese
lingo and African beats, along with
Lebanese duo RUST, comprising singers
Hani Manna and Petra Hawi, known for their
blend of traditional Arabic melodies and poetry
with modern electronic beats.
2024’s edition of the festival invites visitors
to take a fresh look at how they experience
their weekends. Quoz Arts Fest hopes to
tap into the inherent relativity of time with
a unique and layered experience for every
single visitor by creating unexpected stories,
producing different rhythms, and curating
playful displays.
Live performances at the weekend festival
that promise to be crowd favourites include:
UAE-based Stick No Bills with their
South Asian music remixed as DJ sets along
with custom visuals; A Bharatham performance,
choreographed by millennial artist
Usha Jey as a hybrid between hip-hop and
Bharatanatyam; and, Tanzanian-born performance
artist Dipesh Pandya’s live performance
and installation transforming a car
into a sonic sculpture via spoken word specifically
written in response to the Al Quoz
neighbourhood and site where Alserkal Avenue
is located. Amina will take to the stage
with her intimate folk and pop-infused tunes,
and the poetry and electronic music duo that
form Chamæleon will perform spoken-word
that explore the intersection between the sociopolitical
and the personal.
Concrete, Alserkal Avenue’s multidisciplinary
exhibitions and events space, will
host an interactive, ambient sound experience
created by London-based Japanese
artist Yuri Suzuki to challenge our very preconceptions
of natural and artificial forms via
an eclectic arrangement of pipes and horns.
Music lovers can also look forward to
the return of the popular Quoz Encore,
which will showcase some of the country’s
most promising homegrown emerging music
acts. Musicians of all ages, genres,
and language, are invited to the platform’s

CONVERSATIONS
Q.Your work seamlessly combines digital art with literature,
creating a unique synergy. How did your journey in both
fields influence each other, and what role does storytelling
play in your artistic process?
I have always loved reading and discovered my passion for mythology
about 10 years ago, which I then began integrating into
my work. During a rather dark phase of my life, I developed an
interest in poetry and psychology. These areas have enriched
my work and helped me to deal with my own emotions more
effectively. Originally, storytelling wasn’t particularly important
to me; I simply wanted to express my emotions and feelings in
some form. Eventually, this led to a sort of storytelling developing
quite naturally.
Q.Having exhibited your art in various cultural hubs globally,
from San Francisco to Zurich, how do diverse cultural landscapes
influence or inspire your creative process? Are there
specific experiences from these international exhibitions
that stand out to you?
It feels wonderful to have had the opportunity to exhibit my work
in so many different places. I am quite shy and prefer to stay in
the background, so I rarely visit exhibitions... even if they are my
own. However, I recall one exhibition where I observed an older
woman standing in front of one of my paintings for a long time.
After a while, she noticed me through the crowd and gave me
a long look that made me feel as though she understood everything
I felt while painting that piece, possibly because she had
felt it herself at some point. Maybe I misinterpreted the whole
situation, but that woman gave me the feeling that what I do has
value, which was hard for me to comprehend at the time.

Q.Your artwork was chosen for the Lunar Codex Project’s
Polaris Collection, a remarkable honor. Can you share the
emotions and thoughts that went through your mind when
you learned about this recognition, and what does it mean
for you as an artist?
When I was informed about the selection, I must have read the
message about 5 or 6 times because I thought I was reading it
wrong, as English is not my first language. I think I’ll only truly
believe it once the Polaris Collection has been placed. If this is
all true and not just a bad joke from the sponsors and SpaceX,
it’s impossible to put into words how infinitely grateful I am for
such an honor.

Q.Your portraits often feature strong and dynamic female
characters. What drives this thematic choice, and how do you
hope your depictions contribute to broader conversations
about empowerment and representation in the art world?
My early career was marked by sexual assaults and harassment.
As a rather quiet personality, I was not taken seriously by my
male superiors. My skills, despite my qualifications, played no
significant role. Since I eventually began to feel exactly as I was
treated, I wanted to express in some way that I also possess
strength. The characters I created took on a kind of role model
function for me. It’s difficult to say whether I hope this leads to a
discussion in the art world, as I am simply sharing my journey in
the search for myself.
Q.The intersection of art and technology is ever-evolving.
How do you navigate the rapidly changing landscape of digital
art tools, and what technological advancements have had
the most significant impact on your creative process?
I think the biggest impact for me was the Procreate drawing app
that became available for the iPad a few years ago. Until then,
there were no good drawing apps for the iPad, and the better
ones like Photoshop were not yet available for it. And then, of
course, there are well-known artist no-gos like Midjourney,
Dall-E, or other AI tools. I’ve tried these apps, but I’m still not
sure if and how these tools could support me. Sure, they can
make the work easier or take it over completely, but where is the
dopamine hit when you don’t achieve anything yourself?

Fine jewelry label The Line - which earlier this year
launched its inaugural collaboration with Gemfields, starring
Mozambican rubies and Zambian emeralds - has launched
its UAE website, with a Dubai-based design studio to follow
later this month. The latter will double as both founder Natasha
Khurana’s creative hub and a showroom for private
client appointments.
To celebrate its UAE launch on 14 September, The Line x
Gemfields showcased its Songbird Collection at 12 Chairs,
SLS Dubai. The collection is at once a tribute to Indian traditions,
history and artistry and a love letter to gemstones.
The collection was named after the melodious songbird,
whose call has remained recognisable through the centuries,
much like the distinctive silhouette of fine Indian jewelry.
However, just as each songbird has an individual voice of
its own, The Line’s collection is a unique and contemporary
take on the much-loved aesthetic of Indian jewelry.
Songbird reflects classic Indian jewelry silhouettes – from
crescent-shaped hoops, string necklaces and flowering
earpieces to shoulder-dusting chandelier earrings and regal
chokers, all handmade from 18k yellow gold. Most of the
pieces place the pops of colour provided by colored gemstones
alongside delicate pearls for an unmistakeably Indian
look that’s both time-honoured and contemporary.
Each design contains vibrant rubies from the Montepuez
mine in Mozambique or verdant emeralds from the Kagem
mine in Zambia. Both mines are owned and operated by
Gemfields, a world-leading miner of colored gemstones with
responsible practices at its core, making the company a natural
partner for The Line.
The Line was founded as a jewelry label by fashion journalist
Natasha Khurana in 2015 – after she was inspired by

the strong woman, Pierrot, acrobat, conjuror.

showy; tiny twill shorts with a pannier construction, a mini pareo to wear

are sheltering from the sweltering sun at our out-of-town hideaways,
but we are just starting to look forward that thrilling time a few weeks
hence, when temperatures will drop, the days shorten, and the torpid
city bursts back to life. Everyone will be talking about the newest exhibition,
the latest movie, the edgiest show, but it’s a good time to revisit
our favourites too.
The Whitney Museum of American Art is a Max Mara favourite;
and one of the most beloved pieces in its collection is the Alexander
Calder’s “Cirque Cader”. Recently restored and redisplayed is the
elaborate troupe of ingeniously articulated performers and hundreds
of props including nets, flags, carpets, lamps and musical instruments
all beneath the towering masts of the big top with its jaunty pennants.
Made from humble wire, wood, metal, cloth, cork and string, each
piece generates character and charm. Calder’s performances were
