having art lessons
from Olgah
Mepham over the
past nine months.

RESTHOME residents with
little or no painting experience
are turning out masterpieces to
give away to family and friends
for Christmas.
Homesteadcare Ilam has
been hosting art therapy lessons
for residents, including those
with extensive health challenges
from strokes or Parkinson’s
Disease and Alzheimer’s.
Said resident Rodger: “I have
MS (multiple sclerosis) and I
can still do it. Olgah works with
what I can do. (Painting) makes
me feel good, they’ve come up
really well.”
Said another resident, Janice:
“I love working with colours
and seeing what others can do.
It makes me pleasantly surprised
at what I can achieve.
“I’m drawn to landscapes
because I lived rurally in Ellesmere.”
Homesteadcare director
Hamish Rose said painting has
provided an opportunity to
bring residents together, share
time and grow their talents.
Said Rose: “It shows it’s never
too late to learn something new.
Homesteadcare Ilam displayed
their paintings at our friends
and family Christmas party for
all to appreciate.
“Hearing lovely compliments
lifts people’s spirits. It has also
triggered others to think of giving
it a go next year. Many residents
will gift their paintings
– just in time for Christmas.”
The art therapy lessons were
instigated last year by late resident,
Pam, who had met artist
and teacher Olgah Mepham by
chance at a bus stop.
Mepham found herself sharing
a taxi ride with the resident,
after asking Pam if she needed
help in a Subway store at Bush
Inn.
Little did she know the brief
encounter would result in her
heading down a new creative
pathway, from teaching high
school students to working with
residents.
Said Mepham: “In December
2022, I went to visit Pam at
Homesteadcare Ilam and went
to invite her for Christmas
lunch. I noticed someone wearing
smart clothes. I thought
he must be working there and
helping the manager. I didn’t
know that he was the manager
himself.”
“I jumped out of the chair
and asked him, do you do some
activity here? A few months
later I received a text message:
‘would you like to do an art
class for the residents?’”
Nine months on, Mepham
continues to encourage creativity
by giving the residents art
therapy lessons.
Said Mepham: “Even if this
is a very different type of class,
I don’t worry about if there are
good results. The most important
thing is to give them love
and attention and share my gift
as an artist with them.
“It surprised me how we
ended the last nine months
with very good paintings. They
look forward to giving some of
their artwork to their family
members as will be a nice
memory for them.”

THE PET food market is a
lucrative business and two
teenagers are intent on getting a
slice of it.
Mariella Howard and Natalie
Berie, both 17, have set up For
Earth, which makes dog treats
from out-of-shape fruit and
vegetables that can’t be sold
commercially.
The pair are university bound
next year after finishing up at
Hagley College.
Mariella’s four-year-old german
shorthaired pointer, Archie,
was the inspiration for their
company, which was recognised
at the Young Enterprise Scheme
awards night.
The teenagers received the
regional excellence award for environmental
solutions, sponsored
by Environment Canterbury, as
their focus was to be environmentally
friendly while raising
awareness of food waste.
Said Natalie: “Mariella and I
decided to enrol in the Young
Enterprise Scheme and sell dog
treats, but needed to have some
kind of irresistible selling point.
“They were already fruit
and vegie-based, so it wasn’t
too far of a leap to start using
ugly/misshapen ingredients.
Simultaneously, this helped our
marketing and gave us a lot to
talk about when asked about our
product.”
YES is delivered by Ara Te
Pūkenga, and throughout the
year the students scored depending
on how successfully they
completed challenges.
Natalie and Mariella received
84 marks out of a possible 100.
“On its own, it wasn’t substantial
enough to get us any awards,
but what set us aside was the ecofriendly
focus of our business,”
said Natalie.
“Every aspect was optimised
to be as sustainable as possible,
which ultimately led to us winning
the YES regional excellence
award.”
There were seven awards across
several categories presented
on the night. Other winners
included a book production company,
students who made bags
and aprons for their teachers,
cup holder creators, and a decal
company.
ECan councillor Greg Byrnes,
one of three judges for the award,
said For Earth stood out.
“We chose For Earth from
Hagley Community College to
receive this award because they
considered sustainability in
every step of their process,” said
Byrnes.
“Like many Cantabrians, we
also love our pets, and thought
it was great that For Earth had
created such a practical and easy
way for people to make a positive
change to their purchasing
habits.”

wonderful holiday.”
A short while later, Chernousava
decided to make the move
to New Zealand and married
her now husband in 2016. A few
months later, she began to teach
flute to her first student, Louise.
“Music is my passion. I aim to
inspire and challenge my students
to become the best possible
versions of themselves inside and
outside of music,” she said.
“My goal is to make every lesson
as productive, educational,
and fulfilling as possible. I aim
to provide the students the
tools and resources to be able to
achieve what they wish for.”
She teaches the flute, recorder,
piccolo and piano to both adults
and children, and offers beginner
and advanced lessons privately.
Chernousova also teaches
part-time at Cashmere High
School and Avonside Girls High,
and plays for the Philharmonic
Orchestra and the Risingholme
Orchestra.
Claire, who lives in Ilam, has
been practising under Chernousova’s
guidance for about four
years and has been playing the
flute for about five and a half
years.
“I love the sound of woodwind
instruments. My passion started
from a recorder group of a few
people to playing an instrument
I love and enjoy,” said Claire.
“It is something that can
help me, challenge me, support
me, ease me . . . I want to make
people love it as well . . . be connected
and feel and understand
what the piece of music is trying
to portray and say.”

Boys’ High put their best foot forward

A BRILLIANT team effort
from Christchurch Boys’ High
School has won them an historic
double in the New Zealand
secondary schools track and field
championships at Ngā Puna Wai.
Both the junior and senior
boys 4x100m relay teams took
gold – in what is believed to be a
first for the school.
Boys’ High head of athletics
Mike Drury said he believes it is
the first time the school has done
the ‘double.’
“I’ve been checking the archives
and to my knowledge it
is the first time we’ve done this.
It’s really special, the senior boys
were narrowly beaten last year so
a few lads from that team were
determined to go better this
year.”
They were backed up by the
junior boys 4x400m relay team
picking up bronze, to cap off
a successful weekend for the
school who also saw discus
thrower Finn McLeod take gold
in the senior event, followed by
teammate James Moore who
took silver.
Drury said Boys’ High had
worked hard on improving their
throwers – athletes who do discus,
shot put, and javelin.
“Last year we started a thrower
programme so this is our second
year with the group working to
that goal of a medal.
“It was the first time we’ve won

The event was the 50th edition
of the school track and field
championships, celebrated by a
return to the city it was first held
in, back in 1973.
Papanui High School were also
successful, with Lee West and
Adi Pathak taking out the junior
boys para long jump and senior
boys para shot put respectively,
while Daniel Wordsworth was
first in the year 9 3000m road
race.
Una Kinajil-Reding won the
senior girls para shot put for
Rangi Ruru, which also saw twin
sisters Zara and Eliza McDonnell
finish 1st and 2nd in the junior
girls high jump.
Riccarton High School’s para
athlete Connor Carston took
gold in the junior boys para
100m race and shot put.

Showstopping Christmas treats
Roasted hazelnut and
espresso tiramisu cream
pavlova
Serves 8-10
Pavlova
6 large egg whites
1½ cups caster sugar
1 Tbsp cornflour
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup roughly chopped roasted
hazelnuts
Tiramisu cream
1 Tbsp instant espresso coffee
granules
2 Tbsp boiling water
250g mascarpone
½ cup cream
4 Tbsp demerara sugar
1/3 cup finely grated dark chocolate
To assemble
300ml cream, softly whipped
Fudgy chocolate sauce (see end)
Hazelnut praline (see end)
Method
Pavlova: Trace a 20cm-diameter
circle on two sheets of baking
paper. Turn the paper over and
place each one on a flat baking
tray.
• Preheat the oven to 120°C
regular bake.
• Whisk the egg whites to soft
peaks, then gradually add the
sugar, one tablespoon at a time.
Whisk until thick and glossy
and the sugar is dissolved. The
mixture should be smooth when
rubbed between your fingertips.
Any undissolved sugar will cause
the meringue to weep.
• Sift over the cornflour and
add the lemon juice, vanilla and
hazelnuts. Using a large metal
spoon, fold into the meringue.
• Spoon half the meringue
into the centre of each circle on
your baking paper, then, using
the back of a large spoon,
carefully spread it to the edge of
the circles, building up the sides
and swirling the top, keeping the
meringue as high as possible.
• Bake for 1 hour, alternating
the trays after 30 minutes.
Turn off the oven and, with the
door closed, leave the meringues

Tiramisu cream: Dissolve the
coffee in the boiling water, then
cool. Place all the remaining
ingredients in a bowl, add the
cooled coffee and very gently
whisk until smooth. Don’t over
mix or it will split and curdle.
Cover and refrigerate for at least
1 hour and up to 24 hours.
To assemble: Gently whisk
the Tiramisu cream and softly
whipped cream together to firmish
peaks. Place one meringue on
a serving plate and spread over
half the cream. Top with the second
meringue and dollop on the
remaining cream. Drizzle with
some fudgy chocolate sauce and
scatter with pieces of hazelnut
praline.
Fudgy chocolate sauce (gf)
Makes 1½ cups
1 cup cream
150g dark chocolate, roughly
chopped (72% cocoa)
2 Tbsp golden syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
Method
• Put the cream in a small
saucepan and heat until just
below boiling.
• Take off the heat and add the
chocolate.
• Leave for 1 minute, then stir
until smooth.
• Stir in the golden syrup and
vanilla and set aside to cool.
Hazelnut praline (gf)
Makes 1½ cups
1 cup whole roasted hazelnuts
1 cup caster sugar
¼ cup water
Method
• Line a greased baking tray
with baking paper and place the
nuts close together on the tray.
• Put the sugar and water in a
clean saucepan over a medium
heat.
• Whisk to combine, then stop
stirring and wait for the sugar to
become golden in colour, swirling
the pan for even colouring.
• Immediately drizzle it all over
the nuts, then leave to harden.
Break into pieces to serve.

Ingredients
5 cardamom pods, bruised
Peel of 1 orange, sliced and without
pith
250ml (1 cup) high-quality 37% to
40% spirit, such as korn or gin
1 to 2 heaped tsp runny raw honey
½ vanilla bean, split and seeds
scraped out
1 cinnamon quill
1 cassia stick
8 star anise
2 cloves
Method
• Place spices and orange peel
into a glass bottle that will hold
at least 300ml. Add the spirit and
shake. Close the lid and leave to
infuse for 2–4 days.
• Taste daily to see when you are
happy with the infusion. The longer
you leave the infusion, the more the
anise flavour will develop from the
star anise.
• Strain off the liquid, put the
whole ingredients in the compost
and return the infused spirit to the
bottle.
• Add the honey to taste and
shake vigorously to dissolve it,
about 2 minutes.
• Add the vanilla bean and seeds
and swill the bottle to disperse the
seeds. Let this infuse for at least
another week before serving.
• You can then either remove the
vanilla bean or leave it to continue
infusing.
• Store indefinitely in your drinks
cabinet.

BYD Dolphin as nimble as namesake
CHINESE electric car giant BYD
took New Zealand by storm 12
months ago with its ATTO 3
urban SUV, and are looking to
make a similar impact here with
its recently launched smaller
sibling the Dolphin.
BYD has moved with the speed
of light from being an unknown
here two years ago. Now, most
with a smidgen of interest in
motor vehicles will have heard of
the company.
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
The Dolphin offers a WLTP
combined electric range of a
fair to middling 340km for the
standard 45kWh battery model
and a more respectable 427km
range for the extended 60kWh
variant.
Core to the BYD electric
range of vehicles and giving it a
genuine point of difference is its
advanced Blade Battery. It allows
for increased energy storage and
greater driving range, because
its construction
accommodates
significantly
more cells than
a conventional
Lithium-Iron
phosphate
battery used in
most EVs.
A 150,000km
new vehicle
warranty with a
6-year roadside
assistance package provides
reasonably peace-of-mind
motoring. An even healthier dose
of that comes with an 8-year or
160,000km (whichever comes
first) warranty on the Blade
Battery.
The extended range Dolphin
provided for this road test uses a
single front-wheel-drive electric
motor producing 150kW and
310Nm of torque. This potent
power and torque double
whammy is enough to barrel
through the 0 to 100km/h dash
in a zippy seven seconds. This is
five seconds ahead of the more
modestly powered standard
range model and the more
invigorated EV to drive in the
sub-$60k price bracket.
Its ultra smooth instant
acceleration ensures there is
never a dull moment, and it
puts a smile on your face when
blasting off from stand starts.
There is power and plenty of it
when and where you need it.
Open road driving and hill work,
especially with 2-3 passengers
on board, gobbles up the battery
range fairly quickly. The single
speed transmission works
seamlessly with the electric
motor, and so it should. With
one ratio what could possibly go
wrong?
The classy interior is designed
with expansive curves to create
the illusion that the occupants
are wrapped in waves. However,
these don’t wash over the fact
that this isn’t the most generously
proportioned cabin, even for a
small EV. It’s much narrower and
cramped than I expected. That
hemmed in feeling is exacerbated
by oversized front sport seats.
These largely block the forward
view of rear seat passengers,
already grappling with a lack of
leg and shoulder room.
This is a highly efficient and
technologically advanced car,
and you are constantly reminded
of that by the plethora of
premium features. These include
a 12.8” rotating touch screen,
with voice integration. A large
panoramic sunroof is a stunner,
made of high-strength acoustic
and thermally-insulated doublelayer
grey glazing.
The Dolphin is packed with
safety and advanced driver
assistance features. It leads the
