MELLETTE HOUSE
South Dakota’s historic shrine was built in the mid 1880’s by
Arthur Calvin Mellette, last governor of Dakota Territory and first
governor of South Dakota. Mellette Association, organized in
1943, has restored this home to its former beauty. The original
furnishings, family portraits and heirlooms, presented by the
Mellette family, make this historic spot unique in the Middle West.
Open from May to Oct. daily except Monday from 1 p.m-5 p.m.
Admission is free. www.mellettehouse.org. (See pgs. 52-53)
The Pickler Mansion
The Pickler Mansion in Faulkton, S.D. is the former home of U.S.
Representative John Pickler and his wife, suffrage leader, Alice
Pickler. This immaculately preserved home, commonly called
the “Pink Castle” boasted dignitaries such as Susan B. Anthony
and Teddy Roosevelt. Come take a tour of this piece of history.
