On display will be memorabilia all related to these games including; photos and newspaper clippings, old uniforms, an official 1973 Holden Kingswood car, a fully restored 25lb field gun used during the games for the gun salutes on the arrival of Queen Elizabeth II and other state leaders attending these games, and much more. Singh said while having the city’s first baby in 2024 was unexpected, they were extremely happy. Let’s go fly a kite IT’S TIME to fly in New Brighton’s sky with the community event, Kite Day. The event will be held on Saturday from 11am to 3pm at New Brighton Beach, shifting from an early February slot. Said city council events and arts manager, Lucy Blackmore: “There’s a lot of exciting events happening in Ōtautahi Christchurch this summer and we’ve decided to bring Kite Day forward into the school holidays. “New Brighton Beach was going to be jam packed with the Coast to Coast happening the same weekend Kite Day was scheduled for, so we’ve decided to space our event out to help manage the crowds both on the beach and accessing New Brighton itself. “There is always a huge range of colourful kites on display, ranging from giant sea creatures to the traditional shapes and sizes. “People can bring their own kites or browse the options on sale at the Kite Shop on the day.” Dogs aren’t permitted in kiteflying areas and if the weather is not good, the postponement date will be Sunday.
