‘Tremendous
servant’
of Hornby
remembered
• By Sasha Watson
PASSIONATE, INTEGRAL, a battler, a
full-time volunteer, and a “tremendous
server” of the community are just a few
of the words used to describe Hornby
identity Ross Houliston.
Ross died on New Year’s Eve from
pancreatic cancer, aged 77.
Said Hornby Ward councillor Mark
Peters: “Ross was the ultimate battler for
Hornby, he was an integral part of the
Save Denton Park Group when we . . .
saved the park from the council aiming
to put what is now the Matatiki Hornby
Centre on it.
“One of the major battles that he
was fighting for, and we will continue
to resolve in his honour, is the major
problem that Hornby and Yaldhurst have
with quarrying and the silica dust that
comes from it.
“Ross will be dearly missed by our
community, may he rest in peace, we will
battle on.”
Ross was a long-standing member
and former Hornby Club president of 25
years, as well as a founding member of the
Greater Hornby Residents Association,
where he was an office holder for the
committee before becoming the research
and submissions officer.
Said the association on Facebook: “Ross
loved this community beyond reproach
and fought with an absolute passion for
its residents . . . and many called him the
full-time volunteer for us.
“RIP Ross from a very grateful
community, we have seen a totara tree fall
in the forest of Greater Hornby in recent
days.”
The association said Ross was a “tremendous
servant” to the wider Hornby
community. In 2021, he was a recipient of
a Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board services award.
Ross was the husband of Marilyn, a
dad/stepfather of Calder, Shelley, Steven,
Wendy, Julia and the late Caren, and
a grandad and great-grandad to many
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Residents association in conversation
with Ecogas amid concerns over plant
• By Sasha Watson
CONCERNS surrounding
Hornby’s new bio-gas, bio-fuel,
and bio-feed plant will be
explored at the next Greater
Hornby Residents Association
meeting.
Ecogas representatives will
join the monthly gathering on
January 28 to talk with residents
about a new way of dealing with
green waste.
The meeting will come after
new residents association meeting
chair Derek Phelps and committee
member Marc Duff will
go to Auckland and Rotorua to
view Ecogas’ North Island plants.
Also on the January 25 trip
will be the
Prebbleton
Community Association.
Phelps and
Duff are looking
forward to being
Derek
Phelps
“informed” and
having a better
understanding
of the plant.
“We have a lot to discuss at
the meeting. There is confusion
about how this new plant differs
from Bromley’s,” he said.
“It’s important to know the
new plant is not a composting
plant.
there will be a
Kim Moss
After many years of complaints
about the stench emitted by the
plant, the city council decided to
The meeting with Ecogas will
be Phelps’ first as the association’s
chair, following Kim Moss’
resignation due to family commitments.
Said Moss: “While I will continue
to be part of the association’s
committee, I am looking
forward to spending more time
with my family, and serving the
community in a different capacity
as a Justice of Peace.”
Moss was elected as chair in
June, taking over from Duff who
was in the position for five years.
Said Phelps: “I’ve been the
years, so I’m looking forward to
continuing to bring the Hornby
community together and fight
for what our area needs.
“We as an association still
have a long way to go as it is a
continuing process, but we have
a good relationship with the
council, our councillors, and the
community, and we are very able
to pass things along and work
towards a better conclusion.”
Phelps was part of the steering
committee which formed the
association in 2018. He has also
been its business liaison officer
and treasurer.
Centre
THE OPENING date for the
Matatiki Hornby Centre will be
confirmed by the end of January,
following the near completion of
its construction phase.
Once construction is complete,
the building site will be
handed over to the council for
the fit-out.
This phase involves installing
furniture, IT equipment, and
other fixtures throughout the
site, as well as testing all site
equipment, like pool filters and
air conditioning units.
Said Greater Hornby Residents
Association chair Derek Phelps:
"From what we have been told on
our last site visit, everything is
on track for the building teams
to be finished in the first quarter
of 2024.
"This allows the fit-out teams
to get in and finish transferring
the library books and all the finishing
touches towards the end
of the first quarter with probable
opening early in the second
quarter."
Hornby Rotary, with the residents
association, will continue
Documentary maker finds solace
• By Sasha Watson
KIRSTY CAMERON is someone
who doesn’t shy away from
telling traumatic, hard-hitting
stories.
She has experienced many
deaths of her loved ones from a
young age.
“The first funeral I attended
was at 5-years-old. During my
adolescent years, I attended a funeral
every year, saying goodbye
to over 10 beloved family members
and friends,” the Casebrook
resident said.
“It was a macabre joke in
our family that we didn’t need
to bother with reunions as we
caught up at the funeral home
every year. The same song playing,
Bridge Over Troubled Waters
(I hate that song), the same pastor,
just fewer people getting up
to speak.”
Cameron said at intermediate
school, a young girl had died in
an accident on the playground
and at 17, her best friend was
killed in a car crash by a drunk
driver, absolutely “shattering” her
world.
“I’ve watched four family
members battle cancer. I know
death well. I know what it is to
fear the phone ringing, to fear
that particular ‘hey’ on the other
end, in a tone that you just know
is bringing soul-crushing news,”
she said.
“So I guess I gravitate towards
loss and those who feel it. It’s a
LET’S TALK: Kirsty Cameron, director and producer of soon-to-be-released documentary
The Garden Room, wants to open the conversation around stillbirth.
familiar space somehow.”
Cameron has found such
familarity as the sole director
and producer of two full-feature
documentaries, both talking
about some of the most isolating
experiences one can live through.
Her newest documentary,
The Garden Room, will be
handed over for post-production
work in February before being
aired on Shine TV New Zealand,
GOOD Australia, and entered
into festivals.
Cameron is a full-time freelance
videographer for business,
mostly modelling and fashion.
“But my heart is set on documentaries.
“I love listening to people.
Trauma can be so isolating and
telling their hard stories gives me
a purpose, because if it’s not me,
who else?”
The Garden Room is a true story
about Cameron’s friends from
Burnside, Kylie and Ben Collins,
and their four children, Arlo, 4,
Azalea, 9, Kaiden, 12, and Maia,
14, who were all excited about
meeting newborn Grayson.
At 40 weeks, Kylie Collins met
with her midwife at Rangiora
Hospital for a stretch and sweep,
and the midwife made a devastating
discovery. The baby had no
heartbeat.
Collins was then rushed to
Christchurch Women’s Hospital
where, in the Garden Room – a
dedicated delivery room for
women experiencing fetal loss –
‘Every parent wants to
celebrate their child’s birth
but when one loses them,
it seems no one feels
comfortable to even say
the baby’s name’
– Kirsty Cameron
with Ben at her side, she delivered
her baby boy. Grayson never took
his first breath.
Said Cameron: “When I met
Kylie through church, she was
30 weeks pregnant. We connected
absolutely over her love
for Disney and with loud kids
everywhere.
“I wanted to make Kylie a small
keepsake film of her, Ben and
the kids meeting Grayson. Then
I saw a post pop-up on Kylie’s
Facebook page.
“Everything in me crashed as
I read about what had happened.
There was never any indication, it
was not even a possibility that he
would be stillborn.
“It was the most awful feeling,
knowing there was nothing I
could do. But, with my skills,
I could potentially give them a
space to share their journey or an
outlet.”
After watching Collins talk
openly and honestly at the
funeral of her son, Cameron
asked to follow the family
and she spent about two years
documenting and filming.
the reassurance of quality
you simply have to see to fully appreciate

Thursday January 11 2024 5
in telling the tough stories
“I’ve had a lot of response
throughout, and I was surprised,
gobsmacked really, at how many
people want to talk about their
stillbirths.
“When you get pregnant, you
spend a lot of time with the
baby even before it is born. Nine
months of waiting in anticipation
and excitement.
“Every parent wants to
celebrate their child’s birth but
when one loses them, it seems no
one feels comfortable to even say
the baby’s name.
“I believe parents need this
space to talk about this trauma
and still celebrate their baby.
People have thanked the family
for being brave, and they feel like
they’ve been given a voice.”
Cameron said she underestimated
how much this documentary
would affect her.
“As a friend, it was not a good
feeling watching my friends
through my camera, reliving
their pain,” she said.
“But at the end of the day,
once the film is done, I get to
walk away. That is it for me. The
family though, has to live with it,
and that’s difficult.”
Cameron also said Ben Collins,
in particular, has a special
reach with father figures of those
going through the same situation.
“Ben is a typical tradie-rugbylike
bloke, who was openly crying
and very emotional during
WONDEROUS WOMEN: Though I Walk (2020) was Cameron’s first documentary, which
follows four Christian women who have experienced breast cancer.
the interviews. I hope the film
encourages other fathers to speak
out and be vulnerable,” she said.
“In Christchurch alone, about
60-70 babies per year are stillborn.
My eyes are open and I am
determined to advocate and raise
awareness for the families who
go through this.
“I hope The Garden Room
creates conversations. Grayson
has such a legacy now; because of
him, this story was able to come
to fruition.”
Cameron finished raising more
than $20,000 in December, on
the Boosted crowdfunding platform,
for post-production colour
and sound design so the film can
be released into cinemas.
Award-winning colourist
‘Trauma can be so isolating
and telling their hard
stories gives me a purpose,
because if it’s not me, who
else?’ – Kirsty Cameron
Damian McDonnell from Wellington
has worked on titles
including Our Flag Means Death,
Elvis, Mortal Engines, The Hobbit:
The Battle of the Five Armies,
and several Marvel films.
He will be working on the film
with Ben Edwards from Lyttleton,
who was named producer of
the year at the 2017 New Zealand
music awards and will work on
the sound.
Said Cameron: “Damian approached
me and offered his
skills at over 50 per cent discount
of his usual rate because he
believes this is a story that needs
to be told.
“How incredible is it that he
will be working on my little Kiwi
film?”
It is not the first time Cameron
has wanted to tell a story about
trauma.
Her first documentary,
Though I Walk (2020), follows
four Christian women on their
journeys through breast cancer
and tackles the question: “Where
is God when your world falls
apart?”
In her final year of studying
for a motion design degree at
Ara, Cameron directed and
produced the film which was
featured on New Zealand, Australian
and American television.
“Originally, Though I
Walk was meant to be about five
minutes long. I had a dear friend
who went through breast cancer
and needed to have a double
mastectomy.
“I wanted to tell the story of
these women’s journey, and how
they coped with a new sense of
self-identity. The four women
who were featured in the film
made it the success it is.”
Cameron said there is a
premiere in the pipeline for next
year, to celebrate The Garden
Room regardless of whether it
gets into festivals.
Be kind to yourself this year
For those people considering joining
a gym but are not sure if it’s for them,
Wigram Culture Fitness offers an
experience unlike any other.
As owner Heather Peterson explains:
“We have created an environment at
our gym in Wigram that is supportive.
Our members come from a wide
range of ages, from fathers and sons
to mothers and daughters, through to
husbands and wives in their 80s.
“Our gym provides a sense of
belonging and an environment where
everyone feels welcome and part of the
Culture Fitness family.
“We have various workout zones and
gym facilities and, in conjunction with
these, our gym offers Express Fitness
Lanes combined with the Fitness App
Myzone.”
Finding the best gym can be compared
to forging a new relationship. With a bit
of personal reflection, pre-planning,
and some vetting, you will be on the
path to what could be a match made in
heaven (at least when it comes to this
key element of your fitness journey).
Remember, you are investing your
time, money, and energy into a gym,
and you need to be certain that you
have made the best choice for you
and your training goals. You may be
enticed to base your decision on online
reviews or friends’ recommendations,
and while that’s an excellent starting
point, there should be a few more
components to consider. Here at
Wigram Culture fitness we want you to
come in and have a look around, and
make sure we are the best fit for your
Fitness Journey.
“People are sometimes fearful of being
watched and judged at a gym,” Heather
says, “but Wigram Culture Fitness is
not like that. We’re full of locals of all
shapes and sizes, ages and ethnicities.
“Everyone is on a different journey,
so come and share yours with us and
‘He was diligent and passionate’
RECOGNISED: In 2021,
Ross Houliston received a
Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-
Riccarton Community
Board services award.
• From page 1
Ross died at home, and a
family gathering was held last
Monday followed by a private
cremation.
Marc Duff, former residents
association chairperson, also
took to Facebook to post: “Sadly
the news before New Year’s that
none of us wanted to hear, was
the passing of Ross Houliston . . .
Firstly though my thoughts go
out to Marilyn and her family.
“It has always been a pleasure
to call around to the Houliston
house and always get a warm
welcome and a ‘can you help me
with my computer’. The mark of
the man is despite being incredibly
sick himself in recent times,
he always asked first, whenever
we talked on the phone, how
were my mum and dad.
“He was diligent and passionate
about his work for the
Hornby community he loved so
much. He would not be afraid
to give the local community
board or city council a tune-up
if he thought they needed it but
he always gained their respect
with his passion, knowledge, and
wisdom.”
Duff said Ross “took on the
might of waste management”
and “stopped a hazardous waste
treatment and stabilisation plant
being built in Hornby South”,
and his sense of humour was
“always never far away”.
He was also an advocate for
ALL ON BOARD: Hornby now has its own Noddy train, thanks to Ross. Below – one of
Marc Duff’s favourite photos of Ross is of him cutting the Noddy train cake.
the green turning arrow at
Amyes Rd.
Peters said Ross worked hard
to successfully get the 1974 Commonwealth
Games logo on the
Denton Park grandstand sign.
Said Duff: “The community
has benefited through Ross and
Marilyn in that Hornby and
the GHRA now have their own
Noddy train, thanks to their
foresight. What an honour to see
the master in action and increase
my knowledge and learnings,
especially around quarries and
their impact on residents.
“Ross, you may have passed
but your fight to make the
Hornby community the best it
can be will go on and you will
always be close to our thoughts
and that’s the greatest legacy you
left – you left our community in
a stronger state.”
and Duff at a city
council meeting.
SUNFLOWER STARS: Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hei Hei grew the tallest bloom, which measured 195cm. Mae
O’Donnell admires the sunflowers grown by Kidsfirst Ilam.
Sunflowers bring success
for kindergarten kids
• By Sasha Watson
CHILDREN from
kindergartens in Hei Hei
and Ilam are prizewinning
sunflower growers.
More than 1000 Canterbury
pupils took part in the Daltons
Sunflowers in Kindergartens
Project, trying to grow the
widest sunflower head and the
tallest stem from seed.
The winner of the tallest
sunflower in the region was
Kidsfirst Kindergartens
Hei Hei, with their plant
measuring 195cm.
It is the second time they
have won the tallest sunflower
title, having taken it out in 2019.
The winner of the widest
sunflower head was Kidsfirst
Kindergartens Ilam with a
diameter of 9cm.
Said Kidsfirst Hei Hei
teacher, Ngam Brown: “This
hands-on experience has
been a transformative journey
for our two to five-year-old
tamariki, where they not only
discovered the magic of nature
but also cultivated crucial
skills such as patience, caring,
responsibility, and teamwork.
“Together, we are sowing
the seeds for a more
sustainable future for the next
generation.”
Said Kidfirst Ilam head
teacher, Lauren Sutcliffe:
“The tamariki really
enjoyed the whole process,
from planting the seeds, to
watching them grow and
watering them.
“The bumblebees that have
landed on the sunflowers
have sparked fascination and
further learning. Whānau and
community enjoy seeing the
beautiful sunflowers as they
grow.”
Every participating
kindergarten in the 11 regions
from Northland to Dunedin,
grew the same ‘Skyscraper’
sunflower variety from King
Seeds, which can grow to
4m tall, with all entered into
a nationwide draw to win
prizes.
New Year – New look Valentines
Hornby restaurant offers more choices and familiar favourites
Thousands of Christchurch families will
have fond memories of enjoying the tasty
food and friendly vibe of Valentines buffet
restaurant, which was located for many
years in the central city.
A New Zealand-wide franchise
operation, the business went through many
changes over the years, then with new
owners taking over the company six years
ago, it gained a new momentum.
A third franchise was set up in Auckland,
its Rotorua restaurant reopened, and in July
2019, Valentines Christchurch opened at a
new location – Chalmers Street, Hornby.
As company director Ron Lal explains,
Valentines has a rich history in Kiwi culture
and they wanted to retain that feeling of
nostalgia, but with some new concepts
added to the mix.
“We wanted to offer our customers a new
experience that’s up with the times, and
with a modern twist on hospitality.
“Customers have a lot more choice of
food now,” he says, “for example you can
choose your own meat, which will be
cooked individually for you. We offer a big
selection of dishes, seafood and desserts,
and of course there are the familiar
favourites that the children love, like the
chocolate fountain and an endless supply of
ice-cream.
“We want to wow the customers and
at the same time we want to create that
nostalgic Valentines feel.”
The Valentines tradition of a free meal
for a customer on their birthday has been
upgraded to a celebratory birthday treat
and, of course, with the famous birthday
song being sung by staff, too. Families are
also invited to take advantage of the school
holiday special from time to time. During
the holidays, one child under the age of
eight gets a free lunch if accompanied by a
full paying adult. (T’s & C’s apply.)
Valentines has always been seen as a
100 per cent family restaurant, a tradition
that the new Valentines team is keen to
continue, but Valentines is also a restaurant
for everyone, from families to couples,
to friends getting together to celebrate a
special occasion.
Situated in the heart of the Hornby
shopping precinct, not only is Valentines
the ideal place for people from the Hornby
community to enjoy tasty food and a warm,
friendly vibe, it also employs local staff,
who are treated well and therefore enjoy
working there and giving their customers
the best possible service.
Valentines is open seven days a week,
from 10am till late. Outside the buffet
times they also do the popular Valentines
Shareboxes, which offer a range of
amazing dishes.
The best things in life are cheesy
“Cheese can be
complicated but it
doesn’t have to be,” say
siblings Sam and Elle
Studd, self-professed
cheese experts.
“It can be expensive,
but there are ways
to enjoy it without
overly stretching the
budget. It can also be
an intimidating topic if
you don’t know where to
start, but all you have to
do is take that first step.”
In their new book they
explore the best ways to
enjoy cheese – where to
buy it from, what to pair
it with and how to cook
with it.
A twizzle of puffed pastry
with cheese – a primo party
starter circa 1985! Great for
using the off-cuts of cheese
lurking in the fridge.
Sam and Elle recommend
using camembert from
Normandy for its barnyard
funk. Industrial versions of
camembert will taste bland
and don’t melt as well, and
they’ll often ooze a pool of
oil, which isn’t the sultry
look they’re going for here,
especially for sharing with
pals.
Gooey Baked Camembert
Serves 4 as a starter
Ingredients
2 garlic cloves, peeled
250g Normandy Camembert, in
Eighties Cheese Straws
Makes 24
Ingredients
2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, just
thawed
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 tsp smoked paprika
100g Parmigiano Reggiano, finely
grated
60g halloumi, finely grated
sea salt flakes
Chilli butter
50g unsalted butter, melted
1 tsp chilli oil
½ bunch of chives, finely sliced
Method
• Preheat the oven 200 deg C
conventional. Line a large baking
tray with baking paper.
its box
2 Tbsp cider
4–5 sprigs of thyme, leaves
picked
freshly ground black pepper
crusty bread, to serve
Method
• Preheat the oven to 200 deg C
conventional.
• In a small saucepan, blanch
the garlic cloves in boiling water
for 1–2 minutes, until softened.
Drain and slice the garlic.
• Remove the wax paper from
the cheese and return it to the
box, with the lid on the bottom.
Pierce the cheese in six places
• Brush the pastry sheets with
some of the beaten egg and
sprinkle over the paprika. Combine
the cheeses and sprinkle
over the top, then use a rolling
pin to roll over the cheese and
press it into the pastry.
• Fold the pastry sheets in half
and roll again with the rolling
pin to firmly enclose the cheese
layer. Cut the pastry sheets into
2cm-wide strips, then twist each
strip and place on the prepared
tray. Brush with the remaining
beaten egg, then sprinkle with
salt and bake for 15–20 minutes,
until golden brown.
• Meanwhile, to make the chilli
butter, combine the butter, chilli
oil and chives in a bowl. Remove
the cheese straws from the oven,
brush with the chilli butter and
serve.
with a small, sharp knife and
gently push the garlic into the
cheese.
• Spoon over the cider, making
sure it seeps into the cheese, and
scatter the thyme over the top.
• Season with freshly ground
pepper, to taste.
• Wrap the base of the box
tightly in foil or tie with string to
keep the box together.
• Place the cheese on a baking
tray and bake for 10–15 minutes,
until hot and bubbling and the
cheese centre is liquid.
• Serve immediately, dipping
the crusty bread into the molten
cheese.
CHEESE BOARD TIPS
• Store cheese in the
vegetable drawer in the
fridge
• 14°C to 16°C is the
optimum temperature
for serving cheese
• Remove cheese from
its packaging and sit at
room temperature at
least one hour before
serving, covered with a
damp linen cloth or tea
towel.
• Blue cheese only needs
30 minutes at room
temperature, covered
again.
• Start compiling your
cheese board one
hour before serving
adding charcuterie and
condiments 15 minutes
before.
• Choose your surface –
large plates or surfaces
are best and dark
surfaces make white
cheeses pop.
• Make cheese the star
of the show by adding
it first then adding the
pairings one at at time
followed by bread or
crackers.

Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 lively and refined
EXPECTATIONS are high on
any new model replacing a top
seller, even more so when it
happens to be the GLC SUV, a
sales star for Mercedes-Benz, the
producer of some of the finest
luxury vehicles on the planet.
The GLC is new, but faces off
against the same old adversaries
such as the BMW X3, Audi Q5
and Lexus NX.
It features Mercedes’ renowned
4MATIC AWD system and
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
is fitted with a 48V mild
hybrid power system with a
second-generation Integrated
Starter-Generator (ISG). These
upgrades sharpen the engine’s
responsiveness and flexibility on
the one hand and save fuel on
the other for a winning double
whammy.
The only model sold here is the
GLC 300 4MATIC, priced from
$113,900, and was the one chosen
for this road test. There are a host
of other worthwhile
enhancements
over the previous
model. Those you
will notice most are
new body-coloured
wheel arches, tapered
running boards and
20-inch AMG bicolour
alloy wheels.
It keeps making
every post a winner,
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
with a bold overhaul of the
passenger compartment that
follows the lead of its C- Class
sibling, and banishing almost
all buttons and switches.
These are replaced by a central
portrait-oriented display
screen that becomes the ‘go to’
for most vehicles’ functions,
including the latest generation
of the company’s lauded MBUX
infotainment system.
The GLC 300 features a 48V
electrical system and secondgeneration
Integrated Starter
Generator (ISG), providing
support off the mark and in
the low rev range. The ISG can
provide an additional 17kW of
power and 200Nm of torque.
It also sees the engine start
quickly and quietly, making
the transition from stop to start
barely discernible.
These systems ensure
smooth power from a 190kW
turbocharged four-cylinder
engine producing 400Nm of
torque. This ensures improved
strength and flexibility through
the rev range. Lively and
supremely refined, it shifts a
sold luxury SUV with verve
and purpose that is up a good
notch on the previous engine.
A sophisticated and highly
organized 9-speed automatic
effortlessly reels off the gear
changes with accuracy and
precision.
There is an abundance of
usable passenger space and a
generous 620 litres of cargo
carrying capacity. High-quality
cabin materials are to the fore
with Artico seats, upper dash
and door linings; wood grain
dashboard trim; and piano black
finish for the centre console.
Wireless smartphone integration
and charging are standard.
This the best-equipped GLC
yet with no extra cost features.
It includes a panoramic sunroof
and Head-Up Display, front seat
electric adjustment, memory
settings and heated seats.
Targeted towards journeys over
rougher terrain, the ‘transparent
bonnet’ shows an image on the
central display screen of any
lurking ground obstructions
directly in front of, or below the
This clever tech finds a safe path
through challenging terrain
fraught with hazards.
With the press of a button,
Dynamic Select lets you adjust
the suspension to suit a variety
of driving scenarios. Ride
quality is impressive; I tried my
best to generate a bit of angry
suspension noise or bump thud,
but came up empty handed.
The handling is agile and
well balanced with good grip
and traction, and much of this
is down to how the suspension
and 4WD system work as one.
This isn’t a serious off-roader and
doesn’t claim to be. However, it
is well suited for tackling ski field
access roads, or traversing wellformed
tracks.
