Lucky dog pulled from
family’s burning bach
• By Chris Barclay
WHEN GIRL, a six-year-old
border collie huntaway cross,
was cradled unresponsive from a
burning bach, firefighters feared
the worst.
Fortunately once the flames
were extinguished, they were able
to suggest Kate Robinson consider
another appropriate descriptor
for her beloved pet.
“They said I should call her
‘Lucky’,” she said, while
recounting Girl’s gradual
recovery from severe smoke
inhalation. Volunteers
responding to the call at
Robinsons Bay, three days after
Christmas, used breathing
apparatus to revive Girl, who
continued along the road to full
recovery in Fendalton.
A neighbour alerted the
Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade
and Robinson’s father Lee,
who along with other family
members, noticed smoke rising
above the jetty while enjoying
a late afternoon barbecue while
boating on the bay.
Parents
concerned
over way
police
handled
girl’s case
• By Dylan Smits
THE PARENTS of a young
girl who said a stranger tried to
pick her up as she walked home
from school have laid a complaint
over the way police handled the
case.
Police have closed the
investigation, saying their inquiries
yielded no leads.
But the parents are concerned
about the investigation and
have laid a complaint with the
Independent Police Conduct
Authority.
“I also would like to know what
they’ve actually done in relation to
this investigation,” the girl’s father
told Bay Harbour News.
A man allegedly approached
the 8-year-old outside Lyttelton
Primary School on December 12,
saying her parents had told him to
pick her up.
She ran home when the stranger
did not know a password she and
her parents had created should
anyone she didn’t know approach
her.
POLICE SEARCH and Rescue
officers have been training to
help fill a skills gap in body and
victim recovery from marine
environments.
Police SAR, Coastguard New
Zealand, and Taylors Mistake
and Sumner surf lifesaving clubs
have been working together
to bring their expertise to the
training sessions.
A second training was held
in December to skill up seven
officers. The first was held in
October.
SAR squad member Constable
Tom Denman said there is a
need for more search and rescue
officers with experience in marine
operations.
“We need police SAR
members who understand DVI
(disaster victim identification)
and SAR operational processes,
but we also need people with
experience and skill operating
in this type of unique marine
environment.”
A surf lifeguard himself,
Denman identified the missing
piece of the puzzle.
“Surf Life Saving New
Zealand are experts in the
inshore rescue space,” said
Denman.
Police SAR members who
are already surf lifesaving club
members were selected for the
training sessions due to their
pre-existing skills. The advanced
training is needed for victim
recovery at sea.
“It’s often in choppy and
surging seas and requires
and Constable Tom Denman (third from left) with Police SAR and surf lifesavers on a
training day. Trainees worked with coastguard members to enter a hard-to-reach area.
navigation and entry from the
water onto the rocky base of the
cliffs. It can be dangerous and
not everyone is confident in that
environment,” said Denman.
Taylors Mistake Surf Life
Saving Club patrol manager
Patrice de Beer said the trainings
have been successful so far.
“Our role is to teach them how
to interpret what the surf does
and what areas of rocks
are safe,” he said.
The training also aims to
provide more capable body
recovery police, so surf lifesaving
club members do not need to
recover bodies themselves.
“If the police have specialised
people, then they can deal with
that. We don’t want to expose
surf lifesaving members to
unnecessary trauma.”
De Beer said more training
sessions in the coming months
are likely.
ROADSIDE FIRE CAUSED
BY BURNT-OUT CAR
A grass fire was ignited by a
burnt-out car on Sunday about
halfway between Purau and
Port Levy. Two fire trucks from
Diamond Harbour responded,
with firefighters working for four
hours from about 6am to douse
the 200m trail of flames along the
roadside. Diamond Harbour chief
fire officer Frank Watson said the
fire could have been out of control
if fire crews had arrived later. The
car was empty when firefighters
arrived.
SWIMMERS CAUGHT IN RIP
A group of five swimmers were
rescued from a rip near Cave
surf lifesavers rushed out on
paddleboards and an inflatable
rescue boat about 8pm to help
guide the group of friends in
their 20s back to shore. Two
people in the group were
significantly at risk and had to be
dragged ashore.
MEMORIAL FOR CHURCH
A memorial has been created to
remember one of Lyttelton’s oldest
churches, which was demolished
after the earthquakes. St Joseph
the Worker Church provided a
place of worship and education
for the port’s catholic community
for 146 years. The memorial site
can be found at 18 Winchester St,
adjacent to the steps which led up
Circus troupe reunites for Berlin Burlesque
• Tickets
$40-60
and are
available
at laf.co.nz
• By Dylan Smits
A CIRCUS theatre company has
reunited for the first time since
the earthquakes to deliver an
ambitious showcase of talent.
Running from tonight until
February 10, the Lyttelton Circus
Theatre company presents Berlin
Burlesque – The Story of Hanussen.
“It’s a very exciting show and
it’s got a bit of everything,” said
cast member Skye Broberg.
The production is a rework
of the company’s previous tour.
It fuses theatre and circus in
a dreamy imagining of 1930s
Berlin.
The company was formerly
known as ‘The Loons’ for the
well-known working men’s club
where they rehearsed and performed
in Lyttelton.
The venue was damaged
beyond repair in the June 2011
earthquake.
“Everything was put on hold,
and people went their separate
ways as time went on,” said
Broberg.
In August last year, company
director Mike Friend put a
call out to performers, asking
them to take part in a new
production at the Lyttelton Arts
Factory.
Friend is the artistic director
of the arts factory, which opened
next to Lyttelton Primary School
in 2016 as the direct successor to
The Loons venue.
The performers answered the
call and reassembled, with members
returning to Christchurch
from across New Zealand and
overseas.
Sophie Easton, the production’s
lead vocalist, returned
from Canada to take part. Identical
‘Twisty Twinz’ Jola and Nele
Siezen also came back.
Said Broberg: “lt was wonderful
to see everyone and be back
together. It was surreal being
back together in the same room.
It was almost like no time had
passed.”
The company promises a
“dynamic aerial set, mesmerising
circus acts, seductive performances,
and a live band”.
The cast includes actors and
performers Nele and Jola Siezen,
Pascal Ackermann, David Ladderman
and Tom Trevella.
“We’ve all really grown in
skills and experience since the
last time. We all have a lot more
to offer now,” said Broberg.
Based on a true story, the
production tells the tale of Erik
Jan Hanussen, a mentalist and
variety theatre owner in Weimar
and later Nazi Germany.
Despite his Jewish heritage, he
had instructed Hitler in performance
and the art of dramatic
effect.
Hanussen claimed to be a
prophet, but blinded by his own
success, he could not foresee his
own demise.
Swastikas and other Nazi
symbols will be part of
Berlin Burlesque, but
steps have been taken
to minimise any offence
they may cause. The
show is set in Germany in
the 1930s and explores
the rise of Nazism.
“It’s something that
we’re very mindful of,”
said Broberg.
The cast and crew
have been discussing the
issue, as a law banning
the Nazi salute and the
display or sale of symbols
associated with Nazism
came into effect in
Australia last week.
The offence is
punishable by up to
12 months in prison.
Exemptions exist for
academic, educational or
artistic use.
Broberg said the script
writers and set designers
have been careful to only
portray Nazi symbols
negatively.
“It is a very serious
thing, but we shouldn’t
forget and move on from
these atrocities. We need
to learn from the past.”
There is a disclaimer on
the Lyttelton Arts Factory
website, warning about
the inclusion of Nazi
symbols in the show.
‘It’s one of the best jobs in the world’
• By Dylan Smits
SKYE BROBERG often finds
herself crammed into tight
spaces for the entertainment of
others.
A contortionist and Guinness
World Record holder, the
51-year-old is one of Berlin Burlesque’s
feature performers.
“I’ve never had the aspiration
to be the best at anything. I just
do what I enjoy and that’s what
draws me in,” said Broberg.
Born in Melbourne, she has
made Lyttelton her home for the
past 17 years and contributed to
arts development in the port.
Specialising in contortion, hula-hooping
and aerial acrobatics,
Broberg has shown off her skills
across the globe.
“It’s one of the best jobs in
the world. There’s not many
other jobs where you get people
coming up to you after saying
‘thank you’. You feel very
spoiled.”
Broberg has performed at festivals
and in circus productions
across the globe.
Her most active touring period
was between 2008 and 2012. The
fallout from the earthquakes
made it difficult to tour.
“Any place that we would normally
train at was gone. Along
with that, there weren’t many
gigs around. So yeah, it was a
difficult time.”
Broberg then became more
involved with the Lyttelton arts
community.
“It’s my chosen home. I find it
weird whenever I go back to Australia,
people are like ‘oh you’re
going home,’ I’m like, ‘this is my
home now’.”
Broberg achieved a world record
in 2011 for cramming into a
box in 4.78 seconds.
She had another remarkable
achievement in 2009, when she
and fellow Berlin Burlesque
cast members the Twisty Twinz
achieved the longest duration of
three people squeezed into a box.
They were able to stay inside
for 6min 13.52sec.
Broberg found enjoyment and
a good challenge in taking on
these records.
“I knew I had a good chance,
but they were incredibly
challenging for sure. Like
anything with athletes, you
know you’re capable of it, but on
the day it’s a question of whether
you can perform under that
pressure.”
She went on Italian TV to
show off her skills after achieving
the fastest box contortion record.
“They were adventures for me.
It’s always fun and the people
take good care of you.”
Hanussen.
Broberg discovered her passion
for circus while working an IT
desk job in Melbourne.
“A friend told me they were
going to do a stunt course, and I
loved the idea of it.”
She joined the three-week long
intensive course on the Gold
Coast when she was 29-yearsold,
and her passion was born.
“I started to think, you know
what, I’m sick of my desk job.
I’m really enjoying this. So, I
left Melbourne and I came to
Christchurch.”
At 32, she met much of the
Berlin Burlesque cast at the
former Christchurch Polytechic
Institute of Technology circoarts
programme.
After finishing the course, she
travelled in circus companies
and conducted solo tours across
New Zealand and around the
world.
Broberg said it requires
dedicated flexibility training to
succeed at contortion.
“Now that I’m over 50, really
making sure I warm up well
beforehand. These days the body
won’t bounce back as quickly.”
She now works full-time at
the Lyttelton Arts Factory as an
administrator, and as creative
director of the Lyttelton Arts
Festival.
“I really like the organisational
side of things and I really love
getting to meet all of these
wonderful performers and
creating an environment where
they can shine,” she said.
Going forward, Broberg hopes
to see Berlin Burlesque succeed
so the circus company can put
on more shows together.
NEWS
Dad doesn’t know
if police ‘asked for
camera footage’
•From page 1
The father told Bay Harbour
News he believed police did not
check CCTV cameras which
could have provided clues to
the vehicle the stranger could
have been associated with. His
daughter said a white van was
parked near where she was
approached.
He said cameras on Norwich
Quay and the Lyttelton
Tunnel could have helped the
investigation.
The father says police initially
said they would check footage
from the cameras. But when
he made inquiries about the
progress of the investigation last
week, he was told the case was
“closed”.
The officer he was dealing with
wouldn’t say if the cameras had
been checked, he said.
“I said to her: ‘So what have
you guys actually done?’”
He said the officer would not
reveal what other inquiries had
been made.
“I don’t think they did
anything. I don’t even know
if they asked for the camera
footage.”
Police also refused to answer
specific questions from Bay
Harbour News, including
whether the Norwich Quay and
tunnel cameras, or any others
around Lyttelton, were checked.
The father also said he told
police about a grey vehicle which
could have been involved when
another girl was approached
at Opawa School, also in
December.
The person associated with
that vehicle had similar features
to the man his daughter said
approached her.
The father’s inquiries also
revealed Lyttelton Tunnel CCTV
footage is deleted after about
seven days.
A NZTA Waka Kotahi
spokesperson said the footage is
deleted because of storage costs.
CCTV footage on Norwich
Quay is stored in a city council
database and is deleted after
about five weeks.
Police would not comment on
whether CCTV at the tunnel or
in other parts of Lyttelton were
checked for vehicles of interest
during the investigation or if
there were checks within seven
days of the alleged incident.
‘We got out of it by
the skin of our teeth’
•From page 1
Although the neighbour
opened a door to the property,
dense smoke prevented him from
retrieving Girl from the lounge.
“The smoke was so intense they
had to close the doors again and
wait for the firefighters to get her
out. They had to wait seven or
so minutes for someone to get in
there and get her,” Kate Robinson
said.
“When I got there and saw the
state she was in . . . she couldn’t
walk and (was) struggling to
breathe. She was pretty much out
to it and not looking very good.”
A veterinarian, who was
those guys. The fire brigade was
magnificent.”
Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief fire officer Mark Thomson
credited his crew for finding Girl
in challenging circumstances
after arriving on the scene seven
minutes after the alarm was
sounded.
“It was a black
dog in a black
smoke-filled
room on a black
couch so the
guys did very,
very well to find
her and put BA
(breathing apparatus)
on.”
Mark
fortuitously in the vicinity, then
continued Girl’s treatment,
Still, the Thomson
administering antibiotics and grateful. “I looked over (from the scenario looked
steroids.
“She got a couple of shots and
bounced back really quickly, then
she did decline a bit later,” Kate
Robinson said.
“She was really lethargic . . .
coughing. We had to carry her
out to the toilet. It’s only been the
last couple of days that she’s fully
recovered. We’re really, really
lucky.”
Although the fire – believed to
be caused by an electrical fault –
extensively damaged the kitchen
and lounge, Lee Robinson was
boat) and I could see the smoke
pouring out of the roof. It was a
bit unnerving, but never mind,
we’re alive,” he said.
“We were five minutes off losing
everything; we got out of it by
the skin our of teeth.
“There was a lot of damage but
we could have lost a dog, a bach
(built by Lee’s father Matthew
in 1953), and 30 years of native
planting.
“Baches up the hillside,
everything was at risk. We were
so lucky, I can’t say enough about
grim when they emerged: “Its
head was limp, it didn’t look
good,” he said.
So Thomson, his firefighters,
and volunteers from Little River
were amazed when Girl returned
from her vet visit while they were
mopping up.
“When she came back every
single one of them was like
‘Is this the same dog?’” Kate
Robinson said.
“She was very, very close (to
death). They were all really
stoked she was ok.”
City2Surf: Running for kids in 2024
CHILDREN encountering a
challenging road ahead will
benefit from the latest edition of
the iconic Les Mills City2Surf
fun run in March.
Star Media has partnered with
the Cholmondeley Children’s
Centre in Governors Bay, a safe
haven for children aged between
three and 12-years-old.
Established in 1925 as the
Cholmondeley Memorial
Children’s Home, more than
30,000 Canterbury children have
stayed at the facility on a shortterm
respite basis.
A new purpose-built premises
opened in 2015 following the
Canterbury earthquakes.
“It’s a really
good cause,”
said Star
Media regional
manager Steve
McCaughan,
who encouraged
City2Surf
competitors
to donate to
Cholmondeley
Steve
McCaughan
when they register for the March
17 event.
“It gets funding to the tune of
about $700,000 a year so they
have a shortfall of about $1.6
million. They rely on fundraising
FUN-DRAISE: Take on the original pre-quake running
route on Sunday, March 17 and help raise money for
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre.
to be able to operate at full
capacity,” he said.
“Cholmondeley relies on
public funding and you have the
ability to donate through the
website. Your donation can make
the difference between another
child getting a bed for the night.”
Social and serious athletes
tackle the celebrated original
route from the central city to
New Brighton for a second
successive year after earthquake
damage required revised routes
post-2011.
This edition of the South
Island’s biggest fun run is again
spearheaded by a 12km route
from Latimer Square to New
Brighton.
A less taxing 6km route starts
at Bickerton Reserve in Wainoni
– near last year’s starting point at
Avon Park – and also finishes at
Rawhiti Domain.
Time Travelling with a Tortoise
by Ross Welford
Exciting, funny, heartwarming, and mind-bendingly
clever, Time Travelling with a Tortoise is the
extraordinary, adventure-packed sequel to Ross
Welford’s beloved, bestselling debut, Time Travelling
with a Hamster. Al Chaudhury travelled back in time to
save his father’s life.
And it worked – Al’s dad is alive again and life is back to the way
it should be. At least, that’s what Al thinks.
Because when an accident nearly kills Al’s beloved Grandpa Byron, and
forces Al back in time again, this time he leaves someone behind, trapped
in another dimension forever.
And now Al is forced to travel through time once more, not just to rescue
his friend from the past, but also to save his Grandpa Byron’s life… and to
make sure that there will be a future waiting for them all.
It turns out time travel isn’t as simple as Al thought.
THIS BOOK
On the eve of a world war, a forbidden love will blossom in the garden of a
stately home, where one young woman will make a choice that will change
her life forever…
As the storm clouds of war gather, Cordelia seeks refuge in the grounds
of her family estate. Handsome landscaper Isaac has recently arrived to
tend to the gardens, and the connection between him and Cordelia is as
immediate as it is forbidden. Isaac begins to secretly teach her how to
cultivate the gardens, so when he and all the young men are called away
to war, Cordelia takes over. From the battlefields of Europe, Isaac sends
her letters, that give her hope for their future in peacetime. But when
these messages abruptly cease, Cordelia must face up to the worst and
take her future – and the fate of the garden they both loved – into her own
hands…
An epic, sweeping tale of love, war and the strength of the human spirit.
Fans of Lucinda Riley and Kate Morton will be absolutely gripped by this
Puawai recipients embody school values
Heathcote Valley School recipients Jamie, Belle and Aislinn
with Gretchen Cocks.
LAST YEAR’S Year 8 students
are starting to think about
the transition to high school
with excitement and a maybe
a little trepidation. And their
parents are thinking about the
transition too, because it’s not
an inexpensive exercise with the
need for new uniforms and new
technology.
To assist with costs, the
Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
introduced the Puawai Award
in 2020. The award recognises
students who flourished in their
final year of primary school.
Each school determines their
own criteria, and the number of
recipients they wish to recognise.
Said Te Raekura Redcliffs
School principal Nick Leith: “For
our four recipients, it’s a wellearned
award as they embody
the school values. They are leaders
in their own right, in the way
they interact with all students
as well as mentoring the young
ones. They clearly demonstrate
authentic leadership.”
The 13 recipients of the Puawai
Award are a diverse group. Ask
them their favourite subjects and
you find maths and PE are common,
with writing and art close
behind. In their spare time they
are an active bunch, playing basketball,
football, hockey, netball,
surfing, snowboarding, running,
ocean training and horse-riding.
Music, art, reading and computer
games also feature. Next year
they are heading off in different
directions to nine Christchurch
high schools.
“What impressed me was
many of them had such clear
aspirations as such an early age,”
said Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
trustee Jane Paterson.
“It might be to earn a place
on the Freeride World Tour
for snowboarding, to represent
Christchurch at the eventing
championships this year, to earn
a medal at the 2024 national surf
lifesaving competitions, or to
even join a rock band. They have
both short and long-term goals
and I am sure they will do their
best to make them a reality.”
While the Puawai Awards are
for Year 8 students, the Sumner
Ferrymead Foundation also
offers a range of academic and
Outward Bound scholarships,
and apprentice and environment
awards.
• Applications are
now open for the 2024
scholarships and awards
programme. More
NEWS 19
Ensuring the Okains Bay
community keeps thriving
Community-led
development in small
settlements can make all
the difference. Reporter
Dylan Smits spoke with
Judith Thacker from the
Okains Bay Enhancement
Society about her group’s
work to preserve the
settlement’s heritage and
attract visitors
JUDITH THACKER “is all
about” making Okains Bay a
better place to live and visit.
Now her efforts have been
acknowledged with a city council
civic award for services to the
community.
The 77-year-old was shocked
when she was nominated for the
award by residents.
But she said it felt good to
receive it alongside others who
have made positive contributions
to their communities. That
was until she was told to give
a speech at the ceremony last
month.
“That was my worst
nightmare,” said Thacker.
“I tend to be more of a team
player than a leader.”
Born in Christchurch, she
married her husband Kerry in
1965 and moved to the bay.
“I knew about community and
how important it was even in the
city to pull your weight.”
Thacker wears several hats
in the community but feels her
position on the enhancement
society’s board has the most
impact.
“I’m proactive. I come up with
ideas and I like to follow them
through, but I also like a group
of people around.
“You know, like-minded and
who participate in the same way.”
From planting thousands of
native trees with conservation
groups to preserving heritage
buildings, Thacker said the
society works to make the bay an
attractive place for residents and
visitors.
The role of women in the
community was drastically
different when she first moved to
the bay as an 18-year-old.
“The women of the bay, at
that stage, a lot of them didn’t
drive. So they relied on their
husbands.”
Thacker was a member of the
first women’s groups formed in
the bay in the 1960s and 70s.
“It became an important time
when women were starting to
branch out a bit more and learn
a bit.”
Discussing local issues with
other women living in the bay,
Thacker gained the confidence to
participate and contribute to the
area’s development.
“It gave us the chance to learn
about public speaking, to not be
scared to participate in stating
our views on things.
“I think that was a movement
in our community that gave
women strength.
“A community is made by
interaction and how you relate to
people.
“If you put a bit of effort in, I’ve
always believed you get
more out of it.”
The closure of the cheese
factory in 1968 was a turning
point for Okains Bay.
HARD-WORKING: Judith
Thacker received a city
council civic award for her
work with the Okains Bay
Enhancement Society from
Mayor Phil Mauger.
With a major employer gone
and many moving away, the
remaining residents decided
they needed to play a more
active role in making the bay
more attractive to visitors and
prospective property owners.
“It was changing times. When
those houses became vacant
and they were taken up by more
holiday homes, it was important
to rope those people in and
sort of create things for them to
participate.”
With a small and relatively
stagnant population, Okains Bay
needs visitors and new residents
to thrive.
“Without the community
work, you see it all over in
different places. You see the old
halls and where communities
used to be, and they are no
longer.”
Kerry’s older cousin, Murray
Thacker, transformed the old
cheese factory building into the
Okains Bay Maori & Colonial
Museum.
His efforts to develop the bay
inspired Thacker.
“He had that vision, always of
community.
“Whatever he could think of
to keep it like it used to be. Us
younger ones have continued in
that same mindset.
“How can we make the place
attractive to the people who do
want to come and buy into it.”
Murray died in 2017, but his
legacy remains in the bay.
The enhancement society
was created in 2000 to direct
development projects in the bay.
“It’s an ongoing thing. I think
progress makes progress happen.
It accelerates things.”
Over the last five years,
protecting the bay’s heritage
buildings has become a priority
for the society.
The library and general store
have both been renovated to keep
their heritage character. Thacker
is also a guide at the museum,
helping draw visitors to the area
and teaching them about the its
history.
“It was the first landing site for
Ngai Tahu, and it also has a lot
of history of the early colonial
days,” she said.
“At the museum we try to
recognise both.”
Thacker said the
successful campaign in
2013 to keep Okains Bays
School open was another
example of the community
coming together.
“I believe we can, with good
intentions, keep it going here for
many generations to come.”
