parking issues are under review<br />

following New Brighton’s<br />

annual Kite Day, with Coastal<br />

Ward councillor Celeste<br />

Donovan demanding<br />

a smoother running of<br />

the next edition.<br />

While weather conditions<br />

were optimum<br />

– a peak wind gust of<br />

46km/h and a maximum<br />

temperature of<br />

25.6 deg C – for last<br />

Saturday, it wasn’t all<br />

smooth sailing for the<br />

popular event.<br />

An estimated 8000 converged<br />

on Marine Pde, the foreshore<br />

and the pier, so rubbish bins<br />

were soon overflowing. Car<br />

space was also at premium,<br />

prompting some motorists to<br />

Celeste<br />

Donovan<br />

park illegally.<br />

Donovan was at the beach<br />

and sought answers from<br />

council staff on Monday after<br />

receiving adverse feedback during,<br />

and after the event.<br />

<strong>Pegasus</strong> <strong>Post</strong> was told 12<br />

extra rubbish bins were<br />

placed at the event area<br />

by city council events and<br />

arts manager Lucy Blackmore,<br />

but Donovan was<br />

undeterred.<br />

“I still think there’s<br />

more than needs to be<br />

done in terms of the waste<br />

management strategy in<br />

general,” she said.<br />

Blackmore said there was<br />

no waste overflow or excess<br />

rubbish when the temporary<br />

bins were removed about 90<br />

minutes after Kite Day. But<br />

Donovan said that was because<br />

local business owners tidied up<br />

the area.<br />

“It shouldn’t fall on other<br />

groups to clean it up. I saw them<br />

picking up rubbish and doing<br />

some of that work themselves.<br />

They packed some of the excess<br />

rubbish themselves.”<br />

Blackmore said the council<br />

had not received any public<br />

feedback regarding illegal parking<br />

and a lack of enforcement.<br />

Concerns were evident about<br />

parking – and rubbish – on the<br />

New Brighton Residents Association<br />

Facebook page.<br />

“Extra rubbish bins needed<br />

and extra parking enforcement<br />

needed as visitors were parking<br />

anywhere and everywhere, and<br />

not always legally either . . .<br />

Organic college<br />

puts down roots<br />

at old school site<br />

GROWING: Climate Action Campus Ōtautahi is spread<br />

across the former Avonside Girls’ High School site and an<br />

adjoining 1.8ha.<br />

THE FORMER Avonside Girls’<br />

High School site is the new base<br />

for the Biological Husbandry<br />

Organic College.<br />

The college, first established on<br />

Lincoln University farmland in<br />

1976, will move to Climate Action<br />

Campus Ōtautahi and offer its<br />

tertiary courses from late February.<br />

College trust chair Penny<br />

Platt said the move will make it<br />

easier for more people to access its<br />

hands-on training and classroom<br />

education.<br />

It will be supervised by the<br />

Southland Institute of Technology<br />

and deliver level 3 and 4<br />

programmes in organic primary<br />

production.<br />

Platt said joining the Avonside<br />

Drive campus opens up a new<br />

era for the college, which over the<br />

decades has trained hundreds of<br />

leaders in New Zealand’s burgeoning<br />

organics sector.<br />

“We will be more central and<br />

accessible for everyone who seeks<br />

knowledge and skills to grow food<br />

in the most natural and sustainable<br />

ways, whether they’re working<br />

in local food systems or bigger<br />

organics industries,” said Platt,<br />

who is co-founder of Canterbury’s<br />

Untamed Earth Organic Farm.<br />

“We provide a solid grounding<br />

in the practice and theory of organic<br />

growing, delivered by tutors<br />

with a wealth of knowledge and<br />

experience and all in a friendly,<br />

supportive environment.”<br />

Former mayor Vicki Buck, who<br />

founded the campus, said the college<br />

provides innovation opportunities<br />

for the city.<br />

“Food security<br />

and skill people<br />

gain on growing,<br />

soil, composting<br />

and all other<br />

“Christchurch now has a<br />

vibrant local food culture with<br />

and farmers’ markets . . . it has a<br />

tradition of growing and sharing<br />

food.”<br />

The campus, which sits on<br />

the former school site and an<br />

adjoining 1.8ha, is designated as<br />

a state school for primary and<br />

secondary students. It is managed<br />

as a satellite school of Ao Tawhiti<br />

Unlimited Discovery and is used<br />

by a growing number of other<br />

schools.<br />

Said Buck: “Students come with<br />

their teachers to take action on<br />

climate change. There’s a range of<br />

options we can provide, or they<br />

can think themselves of anything<br />

which they want to do related to<br />

climate change.”<br />

The campus will provide a<br />

former sports field for food<br />

growing and plans to use the<br />

adjacent red zone land to create<br />

an enlarged urban organics farm.<br />

Scrabble master stays sharp at 99<br />

AT 99, Grace Hartley still plays<br />

her favourite board game,<br />

Scrabble, every night – and she<br />

hardly ever loses a game.<br />

Like clockwork in the early<br />

evening and after reading her<br />

newspaper, the Arvida St Albans<br />

wordsmith sets up the board<br />

to play against nurse Natasha<br />

Patterson.<br />

Grace said they help each other<br />

when they get stuck finding a<br />

word but are still competitive.<br />

“I’m not afraid to use a few<br />

risqué words to try and win a<br />

game and make Tash laugh at the<br />

same time. I do the big words and<br />

Tash does the small words.”<br />

Grace took up playing Scrabble<br />

about 10 years ago when she<br />

moved into the retirement village.<br />

Patterson became her playing<br />

partner when Grace’s daughter<br />

could no longer take part due to<br />

the Covid restrictions.<br />

She played so much the letters<br />

wore off her original Scrabble set<br />

due to overuse.<br />

But Grace has now received a<br />

new set to make sure she is always<br />

game-ready and thinking of the<br />

next big word for the win.<br />

Review of event management plan urged<br />

shocking dangerous parking.<br />

Donovan urged a review of<br />

the event management plan with<br />

the aim of avoiding a repeat in<br />

2025.<br />

“I’d like to know what was in<br />

place so we don’t have these issues<br />

in the future, we don’t want<br />

anything to detract from what<br />

is a showcase event for the area,”<br />

she said.<br />

“We want to make sure the<br />

focus is on the positive side of it,<br />

those things are quite avoidable.<br />

You need to take into account<br />

you’ve thousands and thousands<br />

or more people coming through.<br />

“During the summer we have<br />

these big spikes (in visitors to<br />

New Brighton) for events and<br />

I’m not sure we’re responding to<br />

some of the issues as quickly as<br />

we could be. Having said that,<br />

95 per cent of the event was<br />

really smooth.”<br />

Meanwhile, Kite Day was a<br />

resounding success for the Youth<br />

Alive Trust, which sold out their<br />

500 kites for the first time ever as<br />

a fundraising venture.<br />

Super Easy Halloumi<br />

Salad<br />

Ingredients<br />

250g pearl couscous<br />

500g halloumi, sliced<br />

1 Tbsp Moroccan spice mix<br />

2 zucchini, sliced<br />

Directions<br />

Cook couscous in a saucepan of boiling<br />

water following packet directions. Drain.<br />

Meanwhile, pat halloumi dry with<br />

paper towel. Sprinkle with spice mix.<br />

Spray a non-stick frying pan with oil.<br />

Heat pan over medium heat. Cook<br />

halloumi 1-2min each side or until<br />

golden. Set aside. Spray pan with oil<br />

250g cherry tomato medley, halved<br />

½ cup fresh parsley leaves<br />

½ cup fresh mint leaves, torn<br />

1 Tbsp tahini<br />

2 Tbsp Greek yoghurt<br />

1 small garlic clove, crushed<br />

1 lemon, rind finely grated, juiced<br />

2 Tbsp pomegranate seeds<br />

2 pita breads, toasted, torn<br />

again. Cook zucchini 1-2min until just<br />

coloured.<br />

Combine couscous, zucchini, tomatoes,<br />

parsley and mint in a large bowl. Season<br />

well. Combine tahini, yoghurt, garlic and<br />

lemon rind in a small bowl. Season. Add<br />

lemon juice to taste.<br />

Divide salad among serving bowls or<br />

arrange on a platter. Top with halloumi<br />

and pomegranate. Drizzle with dressing.<br />

Serve with pita.<br />

A taste of the Med<br />

continuing education<br />

It’s never too<br />

late for music<br />

British chef Jamie Oliver’s latest<br />

book is all about providing a<br />

whole rainbow of simple meal<br />

solutions and "deliciousness",<br />

and getting it to people’s<br />

tables with minimal fuss. With<br />

summer just heating up, now<br />

is the perfect time to dip into a<br />

bit of the Mediterranean way of<br />

life . . . and eating.<br />

Feta filo turnovers<br />

Serves 4<br />

Ingredients<br />

4 sheets of filo pastry<br />

200g feta cheese<br />

½ a bunch of marjoram (10g)<br />

25g shelled unsalted pistachios<br />

runny honey, to serve<br />

Directions<br />

Lay a sheet of filo on a damp tea towel<br />

and brush lightly with olive oil.<br />

Crumble a quarter of the feta across<br />

one side of the pastry, leaving a 3cm gap<br />

around the edges, and pick over a quarter<br />

of the marjoram leaves.<br />

Carefully fold over the filo, press the<br />

edges to seal, then fold in half again,<br />

pressing down gently to secure. Brush<br />

lightly with olive oil.<br />

Place a large non-stick frying pan on<br />

a medium heat with a splash of olive oil,<br />

add the filo parcel and cook for 2 minutes<br />

on each side, or until golden and crisp,<br />

then transfer to a serving plate.<br />

Meanwhile, bash or roughly chop the<br />

pistachios. Drizzle the parcel with honey<br />

and scatter over a quarter of the pistachios.<br />

Repeat with the rest of the ingredients,<br />

serving each parcel as soon as it’s<br />

ready.<br />

Rogue ratatouille risotto<br />

Serves 4<br />

Ingredients<br />

700g frozen chargrilled Mediterranean veg<br />

300g risotto rice<br />

1.2 litres chicken or vegetable stock<br />

1 bunch of basil (30g)<br />

100g goat’s cheese<br />

Directions<br />

Tip the frozen veg into a large, deep<br />

pan on a medium-high heat with 2 tablespoons<br />

of olive oil. Cook for 10 minutes,<br />

or until soft, stirring regularly, then<br />

remove half to a bowl.<br />

Add the rice to the pan and stir for 2<br />

minutes. Add a good splash of hot stock<br />

and wait until it’s been fully absorbed<br />

before adding another, stirring constantly<br />

for 16 to <strong>18</strong> minutes, or until the rice is<br />

perfectly cooked, adding extra splashes of<br />

water, if needed.<br />

Pick and finely slice most of the basil<br />

leaves and stir into the pan with the reserved<br />

veg, most of the goat’s cheese and<br />

1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and<br />

season to perfection.<br />

Adjust the consistency so it’s nice and<br />

oozy with a splash of boiling kettle water,<br />

if needed.<br />

Divide between plates, then scatter<br />

over the remaining basil leaves and goat’s<br />

cheese, to finish.<br />

by learning how to carve a stamp from<br />

an old eraser with Anthea Ibell of Remix<br />

Plastics on Sunday 10 March. There are two<br />

nasties in commercial skincare products<br />

and eliminate packaging waste with Jo Day<br />

of Mcginns Made Fresh. She will teach<br />

you how to make natural alternatives.<br />

Make your mark with new art<br />

courses at Risingholme<br />

For almost 80 years Risingholme Learning has been<br />

delivering adult and community courses that help people<br />

expand their skills and explore their creative side. <strong>2024</strong><br />

is no different with a lineup of new creative art courses<br />

including printmaking, collage, and bookmaking. Taking<br />

the humble art materials of paper and ink, each course<br />

dives into the creative potential of each of these materials<br />

and the various techniques that can be applied to turn a<br />

blank piece of paper into a truly unique work of art.<br />

In Printmaking for Beginners, learners will try a<br />

range of printmaking techniques including stamping,<br />

monotype, and intaglio prints. Course tutor Meg Nicoll<br />

says that “with an emphasis on experimentation and fun,<br />

this course will be a friendly introduction to printmaking<br />

that will celebrate both the making and sharing of prints<br />

without needing lots of specialist equipment”.<br />

Also in keeping with the spirit of resourcefulness,<br />

those enrolled in Collage for Beginners will be guided<br />

through different techniques used to create textured and<br />

painted papers that can then be cut, pasted, swapped, and<br />

arranged into collages which emphasise each person’s<br />

creative flair. For those interested in a more collaborative<br />

approach, there will also be the chance to contribute to a<br />

group collage throughout the 8-week course.<br />

Rounding off the new course offerings is a weekend<br />

workshop, also run by Meg, on Bookmaking for<br />

Beginners. Having previously worked at the Eric Carle<br />

Museum of Picture Book Art in the USA, Meg is very<br />

familiar with the book format and will lead participants<br />

through how to create colourful bindings out of folded<br />

and sewn paper with lots of room for personalization.<br />

All of these courses are deigned to be accessible<br />

with no previous art-making experience required, so<br />

enrol today and ‘book’ your spot early. Find all the<br />
