AT 99, Grace Hartley still plays
her favourite board game,
Scrabble, every night – and she
hardly ever loses a game.
Like clockwork in the early
evening and after reading
her newspaper, the Arvida St
Albans wordsmith sets up the
board to play against nurse
Natasha Patterson.
Grace said they help each
other when they get stuck
finding a word but are still
competitive.
“I’m not afraid to use a few
risqué words to try and win
a game and make Tash laugh
at the same time. I do the big
words and Tash does the small
words.”
Grace took up playing
Scrabble about 10 years ago
when she moved into the
retirement village.
WINNING WORDS: Grace Hartley plays Scrabble nightly against enrolled nurse Natasha Patterson at Arvida St Albans.
Patterson became her playing
partner when Grace’s daughter
could no longer take part due to
the Covid restrictions.
She played so much the letters
wore off her original Scrabble
set due to overuse.
But Grace has now received
a new set to make sure she
is always game-ready and
thinking of the next big word
for the win.
THE HORNBY Rugby Football
Club’s premier men’s team might
have only won twice since 2019,
but for one cunning burglar they
are still hot
property.
Club apparel
was stolen during
a well-planned,
though ultimately
unsuccessful, raid
on the Denton
Park-based club,
with HRFC
chairperson Steve Steve Deans
Deans sure the
intruder had club connections or
had staked out the Chalmers St
premises.
“The way he broke in, he’s clearly
been in our clubrooms before.
He’s jumped a fence at an area
undetected by security cameras
and once inside he knew exactly
where he was going,” Deans said.
He would not elaborate on how
the man gained access – security
has been bolstered – but he did
squeeze through a tight crawl
space before ransacking the
committee room.
“We think he was there for one
thing, he was looking for a safe.”
WE’LL PUSH THROUGH:
Kevin Cole received his
civic award for leading
the Hornby Club through
multiple crises.
Club stalwart led
through tough times
• By Sasha Watson
HELPING navigate the
Hornby Club through
tough times has led to a city
council civic award for Kevin
Cole.
Cole, who was a board member
at the club for more than 30
years and a president for just over
20 years, led the club through
several major crises, including
the 2008 financial crisis, the
Covid-19 pandemic and the
earthquakes.
Cole joined the club in 1974,
before taking up leadership
roles. He was voted onto the
club’s board in 1990, and then
appointed president in the
early 2000s. He was made a life
member in May last year.
Cole arranged popular
concerts at the club throughout
the 90s and early 2000s,
and oversaw venue alterations.
Said Hornby Club general
manager Tim Matthews: “I have
worked with Kevin since 2021;
he has always made sure to look
out for club members, advocate
for entertainment and leadership,
and had a very strong belief in
what the club should look like
and be run.
“The award recognises the
many years of effort Kevin has
put into not just the club, but
the Hornby Ward as well. I
enjoyed his direct manner,
and he’s one who doesn’t suffer
fools.”
Cole also managed the recent
building redevelopment and
relaunch.
In May, more than 140 people
celebrated Cole becoming a life
member.
Cole also managed the Hornby Club’s redevelopment.
Bridge Club
Do you enjoy cards, like challenges & want to
stay mentally alert?
….then learn to play Bridge
The Christchurch Bridge Club, established in 1952, is the largest in New Zealand with a
membership of approximately 800 members. Our modern clubrooms are centrally located in Nova
Place, off Barbadoes Street, with extensive off-street parking and consist of three large rooms and
excellent catering facilities.
The club offers lessons which are provided by professional teachers utilising the latest technologies
which enable practice and review at home on the internet. After 11 weeks you will be ready to
set out on your bridge journey armed with enthusiasm and skills to last a lifetime. Opportunities
to represent your club, province or country in a variety of grades will be open to you. In addition,
the enjoyment of social interaction and friendship with like-minded people of all ages cannot be
underestimated, especially in these challenging times. Playing bridge has helped many of our
members to survive the tedium of lockdown with the club arranging on-line competitions to allow
people to keep in touch. Now that we are playing face-to-face, vaccination certificates are required
for entry to the club as the safety of our members is paramount. We look forward to meeting you!
Said Deans: “It looks like it’s
had a tornado over it, he’s ripped
open every locked cupboard. The
committee room was not alarmed
but it was activated when the
burglar entered the bar area, where
he forced open an empty till before
leaving via a fire exit early on New
Year’s Eve.”
No cash, alcohol, sentimental
memorabilia or electronic
equipment was stolen, but a
quantity of valuable club-branded
clothing was missing.
Club members spent six hours
on Saturday cleaning up, with
Deans expecting the repair bill to
approach $10,000.
CCTV footage at 2.54am on
December 31 – the time stamp
on the images is out by an hour
– showed the burglar wearing a
HRFC beanie to aid his disguise as
he carried a club-issue bag.
“What really upsets us is not
only the extensive damage, it’s the
stolen apparel,” Deans said.
“We’re funded by grants and
sponsorship. The stuff we hold in
our committee room is dedicated
to this season, whether it be
seniors, women or our juniors.
“It’s just not fair, you’re taking
away from our community as
well,” said Deans, who urged
anyone with information to
contact the club or police.
“We hope someone may have an
idea on who this waste of space is.”
The man, who is about
CUNNING: The burglar unsuccessfully searched for cash at the Chalmers St
clubrooms and took valuable club-branded clothing.
1.8-metres tall, was wearing a
retro-style black, white and red
stripped top with a white collar,
tan or brown chino pants and red
Huarache Nike shoes.
The break-in soured a
memorable year for the club,
which celebrated the men’s
Ellesmere rugby division 1 side’s
first victories since Rolleston were
defeated in 2019.
They beat Oxford in April and
then Springston in the regular
season, though the latter exacted
revenge in the 17th/18th place
playoff in July.
Centre lacks extra funds to help
CHOLMONDELEY Children’s
Centre has seen demand for
its services climb as the cost of
living bites.
The centre in Governors
Bay provides free respite care
for children and support for
families.
Centre
general
manager Toni
Tinirau said
in recent years
there has been
a constant
demand for its
services. Toni Tinirau
She said
there were “countless weekly
phone inquiries” and a current
wait list of 51 children.
In the 2022-2023 financial
year 351 children from 295
families accessed the centre’s
facilities. It was an increase on
the 2021-2022 financial year
which saw 331 children from
267 families, and the 2020–2021
year with 318 children from 229
families.
Said Tinirau: “The need for
our services hasn’t gone away,
it’s grown. And as the cost of
living puts more pressure on
whānau doing it tough, it’s
only natural there’ll be more
demand.”
The centre has 23 beds to stay
overnight and on average only 17
of these beds are occupied.
“It’s my dream to have every
one of those 23 beds filled every
night. But it’s just not achievable
at the moment because we
don’t have the funding or the
resources.
“The space is there, the
demand is there, we are just
lacking the consistent financial
support. It’ll cost an additional
estimated $250,000 annually
to have all 23 beds filled every
night,” said Tinirau.
Cholmondeley costs $2.8
million to run each year with
20 per cent covered by the
Government. The remaining 80
per cent is generated through
community fundraising.
Said Tinirau: “We have been
looking really closely at how to
raise the much needed funds
for Cholmondeley as it’s been a
difficult time globally to raise
funds for charities.”
She said children are given
round-the-clock care, outdoor
experiences, learning activities
designed to build wellbeing
and resilience, and a fun
environment where they are
only asked “to be kids”.
“The support Cholmondeley
provides doesn’t stop when
tamariki turn 12. It also has the
‘Awhi Team’ (care team) made
up of social workers, youth
workers and whānau
ora navigators who walk
alongside whānau in their own
homes to address issues they’re
facing.
“We support tamariki coming
from homes where there
could be issues with health,
accommodation, interpersonal
relationships, single-parent
whānau, family violence,
family harm, mental health or
addiction.
“We just need Cantabrians’
help. Do not underestimate the
level of support you can provide
a charity like Cholmondeley.
Never think that you could
never give enough, because
whatever you can do, however
you can support us, will
certainly help our whānau,” she
said.
Organic
college
moving to
old school
THE FORMER Avonside Girls’
High School site is the new base for
the Biological Husbandry Organic
College.
The college, which was first
established on Lincoln University
farmland in 1976, will move
to the Climate Action Campus
Ōtautahi on Avonside Drive and
offer tertiary courses from late
February.
The move will allow more people
to access its combination of
hands-on training and classroom
courses, said college trust chair
Penny Platt.
She said the move will open up a
new era for the college.
“We will be more central and
accessible for everyone who seeks
knowledge and skills to grow
food in the most natural and
sustainable ways, whether they’re
working in local food systems or
bigger organics industries,” said
Platt.
“We provide a solid grounding
in the practice and theory of
organic growing, delivered by
tutors with a wealth of knowledge
and experience and all in a
friendly, supportive environment.”
The campus, which sits on the
Avonside site and an adjoining
1.8ha, is designated as a state
school for primary and secondary
students.
A taste of the Med
British chef Jamie Oliver’s latest
book is all about providing a
whole rainbow of simple meal
solutions and "deliciousness",
and getting it to people’s
tables with minimal fuss. With
summer just heating up, now
is the perfect time to dip into a
Feta filo turnovers
Serves 4
Ingredients
4 sheets of filo pastry
200g feta cheese
½ a bunch of marjoram (10g)
25g shelled unsalted pistachios
runny honey, to serve
Directions
Lay a sheet of filo on a damp tea towel
and brush lightly with olive oil.
Crumble a quarter of the feta across
one side of the pastry, leaving a 3cm gap
around the edges, and pick over a quarter
of the marjoram leaves.
Carefully fold over the filo, press the
edges to seal, then fold in half again,
pressing down gently to secure. Brush
lightly with olive oil.
Place a large non-stick frying pan on
a medium heat with a splash of olive oil,
add the filo parcel and cook for 2 minutes
on each side, or until golden and crisp,
then transfer to a serving plate.
Meanwhile, bash or roughly chop the
pistachios. Drizzle the parcel with honey
and scatter over a quarter of the pistachios.
Repeat with the rest of the ingredients,
serving each parcel as soon as it’s
ready.
Rogue ratatouille risotto
Serves 4
Ingredients
700g frozen chargrilled Mediterranean veg
300g risotto rice
1.2 litres chicken or vegetable stock
1 bunch of basil (30g)
100g goat’s cheese
Directions
Tip the frozen veg into a large, deep
pan on a medium-high heat with 2 tablespoons
of olive oil. Cook for 10 minutes,
or until soft, stirring regularly, then
remove half to a bowl.
Add the rice to the pan and stir for 2
minutes. Add a good splash of hot stock
and wait until it’s been fully absorbed
before adding another, stirring constantly
for 16 to 18 minutes, or until the rice is
perfectly cooked, adding extra splashes of
water, if needed.
Pick and finely slice most of the basil
leaves and stir into the pan with the reserved
veg, most of the goat’s cheese and
1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil, and
season to perfection.
Adjust the consistency so it’s nice and
oozy with a splash of boiling kettle water,
if needed.
Divide between plates, then scatter
over the remaining basil leaves and goat’s
cheese, to finish.
BACK TO SCHOOL 2024
Papanui High School
Our School, Our Success,
Our Responsibility
“Our aim is simple... to provide the best
education possible for every student.”
At Papanui High School positive
relationships are at the forefront of
what we do. Connecting through a
responsive local curriculum we provide
an opportunity for all students to learn
in a productive and future-focused
environment.
The opportunity to learn from an
innovative and broad curriculum is
critical to providing a pathway that meets
each student’s individual needs. Papanui
High School allows for a greater range
and flexibility in subject choice including
the utilization of the secondary/tertiary
interface. This reinforces the philosophy
underpinning personalised learning and is
strongly supported by understanding our
students’ interests, passions, talents, and
ultimately their career aspirations.
We understand that for effective learning
to take place, it has to be implemented
in such a way that students will be highly
engaged. The school does this in a ‘forward
thinking’ way by creating learning
environments that allow our students to
see value in what they do and achieve.
Papanui “PRIDE” is what we represent,
and we demonstrate this by having young
adults leave our school as confident
7
learners who have gained the appropriate
qualifications and social skills to become
valued contributing members of society.
All that we do here is reinforced by
positive relationships, an ethos of caring,
cultural responsiveness, inclusion, and
high expectations. The school highly
values the connectedness between
curricular and co-curricular learning
and forming partnerships with our
wider school community. We have a
philosophical understanding that the
holistic development of the student is
critical to individual success.
The school is working hard to
consolidate recent initiatives to ensure
sustained and continuous improvement.
You are invited to view our website, school
Say hello to
continuing education
It’s never too
halloumi this
late for music
summer
Are you an adult who learned an
instrument in your childhood but gave
up because it got too hard or life just got
busy? Or have you always wanted to learn
a musical instrument but never had the
opportunity? Well , it’s not too late!
The Christchurch School of Music, Te
Kura Puoro offers tuition in a wide range of
instruments and has lots of ensembles that
adults of all ages and stages can join. There
are orchestras, wind ensembles, a string
ensemble, concert band, jazz bands and
rock bands – something for everyone.
Our adult students tell us that getting
involved in music experiences in their later
years has been life changing. Learning
something new is good for the brain,
activating neural pathways, strengthening
motor skills and and bringing about a sense
of well-being. New and lasting friendships
are formed and there is always lots of
laughter.
Make your mark with new art
courses at Risingholme
For almost 80 years Risingholme Learning has been
delivering adult and community courses that help people
expand their skills and explore their creative side. 2024
is no different with a lineup of new creative art courses
including printmaking, collage, and bookmaking. Taking
the humble art materials of paper and ink, each course
dives into the creative potential of each of these materials
and the various techniques that can be applied to turn a
blank piece of paper into a truly unique work of art.
In Printmaking for Beginners, learners will try a
range of printmaking techniques including stamping,
monotype, and intaglio prints. Course tutor Meg Nicoll
says that “with an emphasis on experimentation and fun,
this course will be a friendly introduction to printmaking
that will celebrate both the making and sharing of prints
without needing lots of specialist equipment”.
Also in keeping with the spirit of resourcefulness,
those enrolled in Collage for Beginners will be guided
through different techniques used to create textured and
painted papers that can then be cut, pasted, swapped, and
arranged into collages which emphasise each person’s
creative flair. For those interested in a more collaborative
approach, there will also be the chance to contribute to a
group collage throughout the 8-week course.
Rounding off the new course offerings is a weekend
workshop, also run by Meg, on Bookmaking for
Beginners. Having previously worked at the Eric Carle
Museum of Picture Book Art in the USA, Meg is very
familiar with the book format and will lead participants
through how to create colourful bindings out of folded
and sewn paper with lots of room for personalization.
All of these courses are deigned to be accessible
with no previous art-making experience required, so
enrol today and ‘book’ your spot early. Find all the
details and search for other courses we offer at
www.risingholme.org.nz.

Everest Wildtrak sets new SUV benchmark
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
THE WILDTRAK, one of the
most identifiable and desirable
nameplates in the popular Ford
ute range, has transitioned to its
SUV sibling the Ford Everest,
where it is poised to enjoy similar
sales success.
With its crisp assertive styling,
class-leading sophistication,
refinement, safety, and immense
on and off road capabilities, it’s a
large SUV that ticks all the boxes
that matter.
Tucked between the priceleading
$77,990 Everest Sport and
$86,990 flagship Platinum model,
the $84,490 Everest Wildtrak
is OK rather than outstanding
value for money.
Those wanting the extra cred of
the Wildtrak badge won’t see this
heftier price as an issue. For them
it is money well spent for the
exclusivity factor alone, including
unique exterior and interior
detailing and finishes, and a
comprehensive suite of driver
assistance systems. It intelligently
blends tough-truck
credentials in a package
loaded with car-like
comforts that will satisfy
those seeking more style
and off-road attitude in
their full-size SUV.
The ‘look at me’
treatment that’s liberally
used on this vehicle is at
play on multiple fronts.
Incorporating
best motorbuys
www.drivesouth.co.nz
For example, the test vehicle was
well garnished with Wildtrak
logos. Among the targets are the
front doors, tailgate, and leading
edge of the bonnet. In fact it has
more badges than a boy Scout
Jamboree.
With 184kW of power and
600Nm of torque the 3.0-litre V6
turbo diesel arrived here with a
big and well-deserved reputation.
Strong acceleration and excellent
low speed pulling power enable
it to effortlessly front-foot the
many and varied challenges
posed by our tough roads,
terrain and weather. Wind and
road noise on the open road are
barely audible in the passenger
compartment. The motor shows
its all-round class, by making
light work of demanding long
haul trips that would weigh
heavily on the shoulders of
lesser vehicles. It rolls back the
kilometres with ease to deliver
you at your destination relaxed
and refreshed. The 10-speed
automatic is well-schooled in
the art of quick well-judged gear
changes, expertly matching the
right ratio for most imaginable
driving scenarios.
A spacious seven-seat cabin has
room for everyone. A power-fold
third-row of seats, and fold-flat
second row, add both flexibility
and versatility to this impressive
SUV. The central focus of the
tech laden cabin is a 12.4-inch
fully digital instrument cluster
and the portrait-oriented 12-
inch touchscreen that controls
Ford’s SYNC 4A infotainment
system. In the Wildtrak, guise
also scores a ten-speaker stereo
system, wireless device charging
and wireless Apple CarPlay and
Android Auto.
Top-notch safety and drive
assist technology are to the
fore with 9 airbags and Lane
Departure Warning, plus Rear
Cross Traffic Alert. The latter
warns you of approaching
vehicles that you may not be
able to see when reversing out
of car parks. Keeping an allencompassing
electronic eye out
for hazards around the vehicle is
an excellent 360-degree camera
with clean and sharp imagery.
Road holding and handling
sets a new benchmark for a large
SUV in this price bracket. For its
size it feels remarkably light and
Overall points out of 10: 8
agile to drive over undulating
roads and through corners with
the sort of pace and composure
rarely found in a vehicle this big.
The Everest is a true champion
that revels in the rough stuff.
My off-tarmac excursions
were limited to a selection of
weathered farm tracks that
offered up a few muddy hill
climbs as well. All of these were
easily dispatched by the test
vehicle with minimal effort,
leaving me with a sense that its
4WD capabilities extended well
beyond mine. The Wildtrak is an
interesting and worthy addition
to the ranks as one of New
Zealand’s favourite full size ‘go
anywhere’ SUVs that’s right at
the top of its game.
