Repair works under way for ‘munted’ Marshs Rd
ANNUAL SALE
HURRY!... UP TO 70% OFF
ONLY WHILE STOCKS LAST
“HERE’S TO no more winters
with a munted Marshs Rd,” is
Halswell Ward city councillor
Andrei Moore’s response to the
start of a long-awaited repair.
The works to remove a road
shoulder and fix up potholes
began on Monday and will go
on until February 2, weather
permitting.
Road closures are to be
expected and there will also be
no on-street car parking
while the construction is
occurring.
Said Moore: “While it
is a slight inconvenience
for about a week, the
fixing of the road will be
well worth it.
“It has been needed
as the road has been an
absolute shocker for many
years and the general vibe to
Andrei
Moore
these works is great.
“A local resident once
counted 450 individual
repair patches along
here, so it really is
good to see this getting
done.
“The potholes are
often unavoidable
and I’ve been sent a
number of photos of
damaged vehicles over
the years.”
MAYOR PHIL Mauger’s ambition
of Christchurch hosting a second
Commonwealth Games remains on
track despite public scorn and city
councillor scepticism foreshadowing
his successful call for a feasibility
study.
Ongoing 50th anniversary
celebrations for
the 1974 Games were
yesterday eclipsed by
climate action groups
lobbying against the
study, which subsequently
passed by a
10-7 margin.
Mauger, deputy
mayor Pauline Cotter, Sam Mac-
Gough voted for the study; Sara
Templeton, Tyrone Fields, Celeste
Donovan, Yani Johanson, Andrei
Moore, Dr Melanie Coker and Tyla
Harrison-Hunt were against.
Spirited debate, which included a
man wearing a Mauger mask entering
the chamber floor to toss fake
money, came a day after the city
council flagged a 15.8 per cent rates
increase in July, leaving dissenters to
question the timing of the mayor’s
initiative. • Turn to page 4
LAST YEAR’S most popular
baby names in New Zealand
were recently revealed, now
it’s time for the most declined
names of 2023.
Where Noah and Charlotte
topped the popular list last
year, Prince was the most often
declined by the Registrar-
General of Births, Deaths and
Marriages, according to Te
Tari Taiwhenua Department of
Internal Affairs.
The department said that for
the previous 13 years, King was
the most declined name. A total
of 64 registrations were declined
last year.
It’s no surprise that the names
are commonly denied.
While parents are given
mostly free rein when it comes
to naming their little bundle
of joy, New Zealand does have
strict guidelines to ensure no
offence is taken, they are a
reasonable length and they do
not represent an official title or
rank.
If parents present a name
that doesn’t meet the criteria
for any of the given reasons, it
is escalated to the Registrar-
General who allows the parents
to express their reasoning and
then makes a decision on a
case-by-case basis and considers
whether it meets the statutory
criteria.
“Names are a gift, and they are
an important part of a person’s
identity. We encourage parents
to think about their child and
how they might feel about their
name later in life,” says the
Mauger insisted the study by
ChristchurchNZ – the city’s
economic development agency –
was not a precursor to an official
bid to host New Zealand’s first
Commonwealth Games since
Auckland in 1990 in either 2030
or beyond.
“This is simply asking staff for
advice, for them to come back
to us on what venues we have
and may need, accommodations
costs, environment impacts. It is
not asking for a formal business
case,” he said.
“This could be a great opportunity
for our city so we need
independent advice to consider it
properly. That advice may say it’s
a fizzer, but at least we’ve looked
at it. If you don’t ask, we won’t
know.”
Mauger said the Games events
could be spread throughout the
South Island, suggesting the
cycling velodrome in Invercargill
could be utilised.
“We don’t need a velodrome
built here. We don’t have to go
nuts and spend a fortune. We’ve
still got the town hall, which had
the weightlifting for 1974.”
Restore Passenger Rail
spokesperson Aurora Garner-
Randolph spearheaded debate
from the public gallery, asking
how the city council could
investigate hosting the Games
a month after some councillors
advocated asset sales to address
financial concerns.
“At what point from the asset
sales vote did we acquire the
cash to host an extravagant
tea party and invite the entire
Commonwealth?”
“Again we’re debating another
ridiculous proposition that
would not benefit the average
Christchurch resident. It’s
a costly, environmentally
damaging project that would
quite likely bankrupt our
council.”
Labelling Mauger’s interest
estimated at $3.3 billion.
Moore was concerned
about public perception given
revelations of imminent hikes.
“If the next day they see the
council are exploring a bid for
the Commonwealth Games,
people struggling to pay their
bills will feel fear. The time is not
Added Templeton: “It is
probably possible but we need to
be realistic. The question is not
‘could we?’ but ‘should we?’ host
the Games.
“The answer is clearly no.
Many cities larger than us
have taken a look at hosting in
recent years, cities with much
bigger populations and better
infrastructure already in place.
“They declined the
opportunity because of the cost.
The bid cost alone for the 2022
Games (in Birmingham, UK)
cost 20 million pounds and I’m
sure we can find a much better
use of $42 million.”
Templeton also pointed out the
city council did not have
“a particularly good
track record of signing
and expecting others to
pay for them”.
New hospital car park often empty,
• By Niva Chittock
STAFF AND patients at
Christchurch Hospital are
avoiding a brand new public car
park because they cannot afford
the fees or find it inaccessible.
The Tū Waka Waipapa building
opened across from the
hospital in November.
It was cited to help ease a
near decade-long parking debacle
which had seen nurses assaulted,
cars stolen and patients
slapped with hefty parking fines.
But Nurses Organisation delegate
Erica Donovan said many
of Tū Waka Waipapa’s 450 parks
were often empty.
“That car park has made absolutely
no difference. It’s not a discounted
service for staff. It would
be $24 a day and frankly, for
most staff that is
unsustainable,
let alone for a lot
of patients and
their families,”
she said.
An outpatient
told RNZ he
used the cheaper
Deans Ave Park
and Ride service
Erica
Donovan
up to four times a month instead.
“We tried that (new car park)
and it came to $12 for a few
hours. It kind of felt like they
could have built a car park
wasn’t going to screw everyone
over for an exuberant amount.
Most people are struggling with
the state of the economy as it is,”
he said.
The park and ride cost $5 for
four hours and $10 for a day.
Another shuttle user said
getting aboard with a walker
was a hassle, but at least he got
dropped right outside the hospital.
“So few disabled parks, it’s
ridiculous for a hospital this size.
It’s bloody awful. Have you tried
to find a car park down there?
It’s about as rare as rocking horse
crap,” he said.
The park and ride doubled
the time needed for his appointments,
he said.
A woman who was rushing her
niece to the emergency department
recently got hit with a large
parking ticket.
“You don’t know how long
you’re going to be there and of
course there’s an extra cost. And
if you actually don’t remember,
because of the emergency that’s
going on in ED for you, you don’t
PARKING:
Christchurch
Hospital’s
new public
car park,
Tū Waka
Waipapa,
charges a
maximum
of $24 a
day, causing
hospital staff
and patients
to look
elsewhere
for cheaper
options.
think to go and put money in
your meter, and then of course,
you end up with a parking bill
on top of the crisis and the
trauma that you’re already going
through,” she said.
The 35 car parks outside the
emergency department were the
only public parks onsite.
They cost $80 per day and were
managed by Wilson Parking.
The woman understood having
higher parking rates in the
central city, but thought hospital
staff and patients deserved discounted
parking.
Ngāi Tahu Property, which
built the car park, said its rates
were “set in line with CBD rates”.
Wilson Parking manages the
car park and declined to comment.
Three other public car parks,
all within a 1km radius, charged
cheaper rates – two were also run
by Wilson Parking.
Free, on-street parking nearby
was favoured by staff but came
with increased risks, as one of
Donovan’s colleagues found out
six months ago.
“We had a staff member in
my area have her car stolen and
it ended up across the city. That
was quite an awful phone call
to get, I’d imagine, while you’re
on night shift, that your mode
of transport home is now sitting
across the city,” she said.
The situation deteriorated
further in summer, due to events
and cricket matches at Hagley
Oval, Donovan said.
“Large sections around where
staff park will be out of use or
very busy and it just pushes
people further and further out.
Some colleagues park their cars
in Riccarton and walk or bus to
work,” she said.
Donovan was offered a place
on the wait list for the hospital’s
current staff parking building
when she started working there
In 2020, it received $4.25 million
from the Government to help
build a two-storey extension to its
existing Antigua St staff car park.
The work was delayed in
2021 until the public car park was
finished so it could explore leasing
some of them for staff while
the extension was built.
But head of infrastructure Dr
Rob Ojala said this plan was no
longer being pursued.
“We have undertaken consultant
work to design the extension
look at best ways to deliver this
Given the position of the
he said.
According to documents
obtained under the Official Information
Act, as of February 2023,
$664,000 had been spent.
Shoes stack up as buyers crowd
• By Nikki Preston
AN OPEN home resembled a
shoe store at the weekend with
buyers kicking off their jandals,
sandals and sneakers at the door
to view a classic brick home in
the school zone suburb.
The entry-level Fendalton property
zoned for the sought-after
Burnside High and Christchurch
Girls’ and Boys’ high schools saw
41 groups traipse through its
doors during its first weekend of
open homes.
At one point 17 pairs of shoes
lay outside the front door as
people took their chance to view
the property that last sold 30
years ago.
Harcourts
Gold listing
agent Mark
O’Loughlin said
it was almost
double the number
of people
Mark
O’Loughlin
they had seen
through open
homes at the
end of last year,
and even above the average 25 to
30 groups they expect through
an entire three-week auction
campaign.
“We’ve more people through
in the first two days than in a
normal three-week campaign,”
he said.
LOCATION: Being zoned for the city’s most sought-after schools was a drawcard for this
entry-level Fendalton home.
PHOTOS: NZ HERALD
Some of those buyers had kids
who had missed out on getting
into their preferred schools so
wanted to move into the area in
time for school to start, while
others had been warned about
the difficulties of getting into
these schools out of zone so were
looking to future proof, he said.
“All the school zones are very
tight and if you are not in the
zone, you don’t go to the school.
If you live in the zone the school
has to take them.”
The drive for people to have
their kids attend these schools
was so high many of the schools
were now requiring a lawyer or
Justice of the Peace sign a document
to verify they lived at the
property.
The three-bedroom, onebathroom
1950s house at 37
Wai-iti Tce was “very liveable”
in its current condition but had
the potential to be modernised,
O’Loughlin said, so could appeal
to people wanting to buy into the
area of the schools or those looking
for a 600sq m section to build
their forever home on.
The street in Christchurch’s
most expensive suburb had
been redeveloped since the
earthquakes with some older
houses being bowled and
replaced with significant homes
resulting in houses there fetching
anywhere between $1 million
and $3 million.
Along with Fendalton and
Merivale – which also shared the
same sought-after school zones
– O’Loughlin said there was
strong demand for houses within
the Cashmere High School
boundary.
And it’s not just Christchurch
people fighting for these good
school zones, he said, but
younger families from Auckland,
Hamilton, Tauranga and
Wellington who were moving
south for affordability and
lifestyle.
“It’s all about lifestyle and ease
of access. Christchurch is really
becoming a high-technology
advanced engineered city.”
Those relocating to
Christchurch were realising
they could leave work and be at
their kids’ school for a play or to
where the journey would take an
O’Loughlin said.
Grenadier salesperson
Michelle
Corkindale has
helped a handful
of North Island
Michelle
Corkindale
buyers settle in
the city in the
past few months.
She said they were great to
deal with as they usually had
a budget of $1m plus to spend,
were cashed up and were decisive
because they had a set timeframe
they needed to buy in.
She recently worked with two
Hamilton buyers who spent
$1.290m and $1.1m respectively
and were able to spend the same
or a little bit less than what their
previous homes sold for. One
group was moving down for university
and the other for a new job.
Corkindale said there were
hardly any properties for sale in
the Cashmere High zone and
they got snapped up as soon
as they hit the market. She’s
about to list a renovated threebedroom,
two-bathroom home
in the zone, which she expected
to attract plenty of attention.
“People are driven by the
school zones because particularly
if they are moving in or haven’t
been able to get into the school
they want then they are looking
and going somehow we’ve got to
do it. Or they will talk to friends
that haven’t got into the schools
they want and are saying ‘well
you have to move now’ – your
kids are two years away, you have
to move now.”
While there was still a shortage
of properties for sale in
Christchurch, this could ease in
the next few weeks as more listings
go live.
Said Corkindale: “These listings
are just coming through
now so we are actually short of
stock at the moment, but it is
making buyers make decisions
. . . and even if you tell them
there’s a lot more coming on
some of them have got pressures
– they are moving into Christchurch
because the kids are at
university or whatever – they’ve
got time pressures and they can’t
wait for the stock to come on.”
Harcourts Grenadier salesperson
Jonny Nicholls said buyers
seemed to be more confident
and properties priced between
FORWARD PLANNING: This house at 63 Jennifer St,
Bryndwr, which has an RV of $790,000 and is zoned for
Cashmere High, attracted 15-20 groups at an open home.
Jonny
Nicholls
$600,000 and
$900,000 were
particularly in
demand.
Nicholls had
14 open homes at
the weekend including
a property
at 17 Parklea
Ave, Halswell,
marketed at first
home buyers or downsizers and
a three-bedroom home on 63
Jennifer St, Bryndwr, zoned for
Cashmere High attracting between
15 and 20 groups through
each. They have RVs of $940,000
and $790,000 respectively.
“Freestanding homes on their
own title are receiving the most
inquiry given the low stock,
while the inquiry on townhouses
is minimal due to the amount of
them currently on the market,”
he said.
O’Loughlin agreed there
were also a lot of first-home
buyers on the hunt. A house at
36 Donnington St, Parklands,
that was a “good old meat,
three veg type home for a first
home buyer” has had 45 groups
through so far and had a price
indication around the high
$500,000s to early $600,000s.
Burns victim still waiting for surgery
• By Daniel Alvey
A MAN who was nearly killed
in a fiery explosion is making
marked progress almost two
years after the incident.
It will be two years in April
since Kevin Burney’s accident.
He suffered burns to 70 per
cent of his body when a metal
drum he was using a grinder
on in his driveway exploded in
flames on April 2 in 2022. He
was rushed to Christchurch in a
critical condition and airlifted to
Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.
Burney, 62, has now regained
movement in his left arm following
surgery in August, which
had been delayed since January
last year.
“It has been really good. It has
given me more freedom to do
pretty much everything on that
side now,” he said.
Despite the progress on the left
side, the Darfield resident is still
waiting for a final date for the
same procedure on his right arm.
“It is probably not quite so bad,
so hopefully that will recover
even better,” said Burney. He is
expecting the surgery to happen
in the coming months.
Burney said he has had to train
himself to be more ambidextrous.
Due to the surgery delays, he
lost his printing job in Christchurch
in July.
Now Burney is unsure if he
will return to work or choose an
early retirement.
“I lost my job through this
process, my company was great,
can’t complain about that.
“I can’t go back to the same
work, because it was a very
physical job . . . although I’m
mentally fine, I think the
physical side would let me
down,” he said.
The first four weeks after the
accident were spent in intensive
care, where doctors said they
had not seen burns as severe
since those they treated from the
RECOVERY:
Life is
slowly
normalising
for Kevin
Burney
and wife
Amanda.
deadly White Island eruption.
They did not know whether
Burney would survive as he
battled for his life. One of his
lungs collapsed, he suffered an
infection, and his heart stopped
during surgery.
He spent eight weeks in
the burns unit, undergoing
several skin graft surgeries.
The surgeries were nine-hour
marathons involving three
surgeons, where skin was taken
from unburned areas of his
tummy and buttocks, to be
grafted onto the burned areas of
his torso, arms, hands, and the
front and back of his thighs.
Burney said his lung and heart
have recovered well.
“I was quite surprised
the other day when I saw a
photograph of myself from the
first week in hospital and I didn’t
realise how badly scared my face
was, and you wouldn’t know that
now.”
Burney, who loves the water,
has been able to get back out in it
with help.
“I’ve got a boat that I haven’t
used for a couple of years now.
But I’ve also got a couple of
kayaks and the physio took me
out one day and it was really
liberating.”
Burney said while the recovery
is progressing well there will be
limitations to what he can to.
“As part of the trauma
involved in the explosion my
muscles and joints all tightened
up . . . so that is going to be
ongoing problem keeping those
limbs moving.”
$17k in tickets
paid off in 8 years
A MAN who racked up $17,000
in parking tickets and other
vehicle-related infringements
has finally paid it off after eight
years.
Todd Fisher, formerly of the
inner-city Auckland suburb
Parnell but now living in
Christchurch, would drive to
work in Ponsonby every day and
park in a 90-minute spot – then
forget to move his car.
He said he was playing
“carpark roulette” and losing.
A $65 parking ticket would
increase to $85 if he didn’t pay it
within five days.
“I was stuck in meetings and I
was just a bit busy and I kind of
got a ticket every day and then
it just escalated
from there.”
Todd also
did not have a
warrant of fitness
or registration, so
would frequently
get $400 tickets
COURT 13
Musician charged
with sexual assault
eleven years on
• By Anna Leask
A MUSICIAN has been charged with
sexually assaulting a woman.
Manu Francois, 34, appeared in the
district court on Tuesday for the first time
since his arrest.
Police allege Francois, who lives in the
West Melton area, sexually violated a
woman over the age of 16 between December
1 and 31, 2013.
He did not seek name suppression when
he appeared before a community magistrate
this morning, by audio-visual link
from the police cells.
The court heard he had applied for legal
aid and was seeking bail.
Bail was granted on condition he surrender
his passport and not make any
contact with the complainant.
He is due to appear in court again on
February 20.
Francois is described online as “a New
Zealand rapper, singer-songwriter, music
producer, multi-instrumentalist and
model”.
He was born in St Lucia and has split his
time between the Caribbean island, where
his father lives, and Christchurch, where
his mother is from.
His first album was released in 2017, followed
by albums in 2018 and 2020.
“Francois was nominated for Best
International Artist for the BingeTV 2021
Music Awards,” an online profile says.
“Francois has run his own recording studio
. . . He is also a member of the groove
roulette band ZoLeKa.”
Five weeks ago he posted on Instagram
that he was “moving to England/Europe”
to continue his music.
“I create my own brand of pop music, I
also play guitar and write ballads,” he said.
“I am a lone wolf but a vibrant entertainer.
I dream to play festivals and shows
CHARGED: Christchurch-based
musician Manu Francois appeared
in court on Tuesday for allegedly
sexually violating a woman in 2013.
around the world and I am working on
this goal in 2024.”
A week ago, he posted a series of photos
with his young child and family.
“We’re about to leave New Zealand for
Berlin, where I will be focusing on building
my music career and working on my
life generally,” he said.
“I might even disappear off social media
and focus on just living my life. Remember
just living our lives? Miss that.
“2024 for me is a year of growth, dedication,
fun, freedom and life in general. I
truly look forward to what’s to come.”
Francois is married with a child.
ANOTHER CANCER
FOR LOLA
My beautiful, brave 14 year old Lola, went
“under the knife” again last week for
a rapidly growing cancer that had just
appeared on her left shoulder. Isaac, our
19 year old son noticed it over Christmas
as he spends a lot of time with her in
his bed. I instantly thought it had to be
a lipoma (benign fat tumor) so didn’t
worry too much about it over the holiday
period. It wasn’t affecting her gait and
she didn’t seem to be in pain. Appetite as
usual was tremendous.
Last week I ran some bloodwork and
aspirated the mass to find out what we
were dealing with. Diagnosis came back
as a “soft tissue cancer”. Typically these
are slower growing cancers but they do
locally invade other tissues. The only
option we had was to surgically remove
the mass with wide margins to make sure
we removed every cell. All Lolas blood
test results were normal which was so
reassuring. But at 14 years old, with lower
spinal degeneration it was going to be a
big surgery for her to recover from.
Steve was nominated to be her surgeon
and Letitia her anaesthetist. She actually
breezed through everything with no
complications, recovered uneventfully
and has coped so well with having a
large 20cm incision site. You can see she’s
confused as to why she can’t go for walks
at the moment with Macy. She leaps
around excited at meal times, hasn’t once
aggravated her wound, but she does try
to spit out her medication. Absolutely
hates pills.
She is honestly our hero.
Five days post surgery she’s off to see
Kate for Physio and a good massage. She
absolutely loves Kate at Wigram Physio.
Kate has been working on Lolas hindlegs
and back for a while now, keeping
her musculoskeletal system in tip top
working order.
So now my most loyal and loved
companion is a “ Cancer Survivor”
THREE times, all completely different
cancers. She had kidney cancer when
she was five years old and as a result
has only one kidney, which by the way
functions beautifully. She underwent
Chemotherapy at the time and hasn’t
looked back.
Late last year she had Anal Gland cancer,
so I promptly removed both anal sacs.
Now we are dealing with a soft tissue
tumor involving muscle.
Our family would do anything and
everything for our precious girl. She most
certainly has many more family holidays
and adventures left in her.
Long may our Queen live on.
A GROUP of teenagers
who allegedly stole a car in
Christchurch road-tripped
around the South Island
stealing other vehicles before
pointing a toy gun at staff at a
central Dunedin department
store.
Dunedin Senior Sergeant
Anthony Bond said four teenagers,
aged between 14 and 16,
were apprehended by police
after they had been spotted
pointing a toy gun at Farmers
staff.
One of the 14-year-olds
started the saga by stealing a
Mazda Demio from Christchurch
with the 16-year-old.
He then drove the stolen
vehicle to Temuka.
In Temuka, the pair met up
with another 14-year-old and
the trio drove south.
They got to Oamaru, where
they dumped the Demio and
stole a Toyota Fielder and
made their way down to Dunedin,
where they met up with a
15-year-old.
One of the teenagers showed
the officer the gun, which was
a black BB gun hand pistol.
Investigations were ongoing,
but at this stage the 15-yearold
was returned to their
caregivers.
$100k ‘money mules’
• By Felicity Dear
A MAN who took a bag
containing $100,000 cash from
Invercargill to Christchurch with
his wife maintains he had no idea
what was inside it.
The man in his 30s was granted
final name suppression when
he appeared in the Invercargill
District Court this week so as
not to identify his wife, whose
identity will also remain under
wraps.
In October, the man was found
guilty of engaging in money
laundering following a judgealone
trial and this week he was
sentenced to seven months’ home
detention.
The court heard the defendant
and his wife were “money mules”
who transported the proceeds of
crime to people higher up in the
operation.
At his wife’s sentencing, the
couple were described as “one
small cog in a much bigger
wheel”.
The summary of facts says the
main player in the police-coined
“Operation Brooking” ran an informal
and unregistered Bitcoin
trading operation, providing a
cryptocurrency trading service
and a money-remitting service.
He would use the money to
buy high-value assets.
The services were used by
people who had obtained money
by illegal means.
The New Zealand Herald reported
in October 2020 millions
of dollars of high-end assets were
seized in Auckland as part of the
operation.
On May 26, 2022, the man
took the day off work to drive
a supermarket bag containing
$100,000 in cash to Christchurch
Airport, where the money was
given to two men who had flown
in from Auckland.
The couple then immediately
drove back to Invercargill – a 14-
hour round trip.
The man claimed he never
asked his wife what was in the
bag and had no knowledge of the
men they were meeting at the
airport.
Judge Russell Walker said that
explanation “stretched credibility”
and “defied belief”.
“It could well be argued that
this was in fact a joint venture,”
he said.
“This offending could not have
been facilitated without your
help.”
When the police asked him
why he never inquired about
what was in the bag he said:
“Look, I may have asked what
was in it and probably got told
– I don’t know”.
Frenchwoman seeks reunion 52yrs
‘I’m confident if they are
still alive and hear my
story they will get in touch.
Thanks to them I fully
recovered and had a good
life’ – Dominique Vallette
• By Chris Barclay
DOMINIQUE Vallette never
abandoned hope of walking
again during three months
in traction at Christchurch
Hospital, and her optimism is
evident again as she seeks an
ambitious reunion.
More than 50 years after her
L2 vertebrae was damaged by
a car accident on Haast Pass,
the French national returns
to Christchurch aiming to
reconnect with a nurse and
Cantabrians who assisted her
recovery from spinal injuries.
Vallette, who turns 70 in May,
is a realist, knowing many of
those who helped have passed
away – like ham (amateur) radio
operator Arnold Dacombe who
was buried in Springfield in 1991.
Despite not being able to find
her helpers via social media, she
is pressing ahead with her dream
of hosting a pub meal, or similar,
in the city next month.
“I’m confident if they are still
alive and hear my story they will
get in touch,” Vallette told The
Star.
“Thanks to them I fully
recovered and had a good life.”
Vallette reaches Auckland on
February 14, and heads south
with the intention of travelling
the route where near-tragedy
struck on June 12, 1972.
She was barely 18 and only
had a driver licence for six
weeks when she left Wellington
to explore the South Island
with a friend of a friend, Neal
Adams, after studying at Victoria
University.
Vallette accepts she was
unprepared for driving a Morris
Mini on what was then a winding
dirt and gravel length of SH6
adjacent to the Makarora River in
treacherous weather.
Although born in France,
Vallette moved to Noumea, New
FRENCH CONNECTION: Dominique Vallette is looking to
reunite with Cantabrians who helped nurse her back to
health after she suffered spinal injuries in a car accident
in 1972. Above – Vallette was wheeled into the Botanical
Gardens for sun as her recovery gathered momentum.
Caledonia, as a 7-year-old, so
the climatic conditions were
foreign.
“I’d never seen snow, I didn’t
know what ice was, apart from in
fruit juice,” she admitted.
“There was a very sharp curve
on the right. The car skidded on
ice and went down a ravine.”
Adams was thrown from the
vehicle but managed to climb 60
metres to flag down assistance.
Dominique
Vallette’s
recovery
before she
was able
to return
home.
Vallette, trapped in the
wreckage, realised she was
in difficulty after regaining
consciousness.
“I knew I had a problem with
my spine, I couldn’t feel my
limbs, I understood that,” she
said.
Rescuers cut her free and then
a snowstorm prevented her from
being airlifted to Christchurch
Hospital, the journey by
ambulance taking a painstaking
24-to-36 hours.
Vallette also has vivid
recollections of the spinal unit,
ward 13B – and the love and
support of locals, who read of
her plight in The Star.
“By the time I arrived in hospital
there had been a newspaper
“Soon my part of the room was
covered in flowers. People wanted
to comfort me. That’s the sort of
thing you cannot forget.”
Vallette also remembers
names, and hopes hers will
jog memories for Doherty and
Jorgensen family members and
an acquaintance of Dacombe,
Kay Perkins.
It was Dacombe who decided,
without prompting, to contact
a radio operator in Noumea to
alert Vallette’s father Rene.
Vallette stayed with Jamie
and Helen Doherty, and their
children Rosemary and Phillip,
when she was an outpatient.
Ross Jorgensen, son of Shirley,
was a Christchurch-based friend
of Adams who visited her in
hospital.
She met Adams once when
he was in London but they lost
touch decades ago.
Barbara Chapman, a teacher
in her early 20s, spoke basic
French and kept Vallette
company.
Vallette is also keen to find
young nurse Sue Osborne, who
would strum Cat Stevens (now
Yusuf Islam) and James Taylor
songs on her guitar.
“I was lying flat, I couldn’t do
anything but I could chat and
sing,” she said.
Osborne’s bedside manner
encapsulated Vallette’s care by
“They gave me time and
friendship. No one ever made me
feel like I would remain in that
state. They never killed the hope.”
Doctors were not as optimistic
warning she would, at best, leave
hospital on crutches.
“I couldn’t believe it, when
you’re 18 you just want to live. I
had the conviction I would walk
out,” she said.
“After three months I felt a
movement, very small, in the big
toe on my right foot. The doctors
and physiotherapists all agreed
I’d been dreaming, but it was a
sign the nerves were healing.”
Vallette astounded doctors
by only needing a back brace
when she was discharged in
December, 1972.
Happily she reports no
lingering issues with her spine,
pointing out: “I managed to give
birth to three children, usually
it’s rather hard on the back when
you’re pregnant but I had no
problem in that way.”
Christchurch’s spinal unit
opened at Christchurch Hospital
in 1964 and transferred to its
current location at Burwood
Hospital in 1979.
Parents want
son’s death
recognised as
a war crime
THE PARENTS of a former
Christchurch aid worker want their
son’s death to be recognised as a
war crime after a coroner found his
colleague, who he was with at the
time, was unlawfully killed.
Christopher Parry was with New
Zealand aid worker Andrew
Bagshaw when he was killed in the
Soledar region of Ukraine a year
ago.
Post mortem reports that Parry
and Andrew Bagshaw were both
killed by gunshot wounds, rather
than the initial official explanation
of their death, which was their
vehicle was hit by artillery fire.
Coroner Darren Salter, at the
Oxfordshire’s Coroners Court,
cited evidence the Wagner group
– a Russian-state funded private
military company – was involved
in the killing.
Andrew Bagshaw’s parents,
Dame Sue and Professor Phil
Bagshaw, have always maintained
their son was the victim of a
war crime and they want it to be
investigated by the International
Criminal Court at the Hague.
‘“The important thing
now is that we need to get
actual evidence,” Dame Sue
told Morning Report. – RNZ
Metro competition heats up
as top teams set to do battle
• By Sam Coughlan
BIG TOP-FOUR clashes
headline Christchurch Metro
premier cricket matches on
Saturday.
Competition leader Burnside
West Uni take on fourthplaced
Heathcote at Heathcote
Domain, while Old Boys
Collegians in second host
third-placed Lancaster Park at
Elmwood Park.
Only two bonus points
separate the teams who all
have three wins and a loss
from their first four 50-over
games.
Burnside captain Matt Hay
said the table is a reflection of
how close the competition is.
“Anyone can beat anyone on
their day.
“I feel this year, especially
with the Black Caps in the
Canterbury squad at the
moment, a few more contracted
Canterbury players are
playing club cricket, which
just adds quality and matchwinning
ability.”
Hay said Burnside would
enjoy the services of their
university students returning
from summer break in the
next few weeks.
“Obviously the group at the
moment getting are results,
but also the students coming
back will make it competitive
to find places in the team.”
Hay said Heathcote’s batting
line-up loomed as a
potential threat.
“Playing down at Heathcote
Domain, they’re a very threatening
side out there, obviously
it’s a very small ground,” he
said.
“Tyler Lortan’s having a really
good season, scoring lots
of runs, and obviously Dan
Stanley can hurt you, especially
on an especially small
ground with his power.”
Hay said top-four rivals Old
Boys and Lancaster Park are
having good seasons as well.
“Old Boys are obviously a
strong side, especially when
their Canterbury players are
playing, they’ve got a lot of
class so they’re taking it along
well and are generally thereabouts
at finals time.
“And Lancaster Park’s having
a really good season as well,
they beat us in a narrow game
before Christmas and have got
some guys scoring consistent
runs and guys taking wickets
so they’re obviously a dangerous
side as well.”
Old Boys captain Jack Lewis
said their match against Lancaster
Park won’t be easy.
“They’ve got a good bowling
attack, and a solid batting
group, you know, Michael
Davidson coming off 128 not
out last week.
“So they pose a threat all
over the park, and they’re
always a competitive unit.
“So we’re definitely wary of
them.”
Old Boys are defending
champions in the competition,
having beat Burnside in
last year’s final, but Lewis said
the team aren’t getting ahead
of themselves in their quest
for success.
“We’re just trying to take it
one game at a time.”
In the other games of the
round, East Shirley will look
to bounce back from a big
loss to Burnside last week and
put themselves back in finals
contention when they take on
Merivale-Papanui at Burwood
Park.
Winless Sydenham will
try and salvage something
from an unsuccessful 50-over
campaign, hosting St Albans
at Sydenham Park.
Bishopdale ready to take on champs
• By Diane Keenan
BISHOPDALE heads into
tomorrow night’s clash
with Cashmere, the current
champions, full of confidence
after a strong start to the
second round of premier tennis
interclub.
Bishopdale beat their neighbours
Burnside Park 4-2 last
weekend which included wins
to top singles players William
Schneideman and Grayson Cullen,
as well as success in both
doubles’ matches.
“It was a good result for us,”
said Cullen, Bishopdale’s captain.
“Although we lost to Cashmere
in the semi-finals before Christmas,
we will be giving it our all
tomorrow.”
Bishopdale is a team of good
friends who played tennis together
through the juniors. Cullen,
Schneideman, and another
team member Madison Aubrey
progressed to college tennis in
the United States. Other team
members include James Wilson,
Tommy Paine, Blake Cullen and
coach Gareth Robb.
“We have known each other for
a while and it makes it special for
us to be all still playing together,”
said Cullen.
Cullen acknowledged that they
face a tough challenge against
the experienced Cashmere team,
but said they are looking forward
to it.
Cashmere breezed past Te
Kura Hagley last weekend with
their team of James and Tim
Meredith, Harry Weeds, Liam
Barrett, and club stalwart Tim
McHarg who returned from
injury to play doubles, not dropping
a match.
Competition runners-up
Elmwood will be back to full
strength tomorrow on their
home courts against Te Kura
Hagley. Team regulars were unavailable
last weekend but their
replacements performed creditably
against Edgeware Waimairi
who won the tie on a set’s countback.
Promising juniors Riley
Breen and Ryan Watt, playing
for Elmwood, won their singles
and doubles. Edgeware Waimairi
plays Burnside Park at Burnside
Park this week.
In the women’s competition,
the feature match up on Saturday
afternoon is between last year’s
competition winners Te Kura
Hagley, on its home courts,
and Elmwood, which won the
pre-Christmas competition.
Both performed impressively
last weekend, Te Kura Hagley
winning against Waimairi and
Elmwood beating Shirley.
The weather ruined Te Kura
Hagley’s semi-final chances
before Christmas, but the team
is brimming with the experience
of Beth Williamson, Michelle
Kelsen, Petra Belzova and Adele
Aorangi.
Williamson showed her class
with her three sets win last week
against Waimairi’s number one,
Charlie Byers.
Over the past two months
Byers has been playing International
Tennis Federation tournaments,
and heads to Auckland
this week.
“It is going to be a good match.
Elmwood is consistently strong,
while we are all playing better
tennis as the season progresses,”
said Williamson.
Cashmere also did not
make the first-round play-offs,
but won last week against
Bishopdale. Ruby Young
recorded Cashmere’s only singles
win, with her team clinching
both doubles. Young and club
colleague Lucia Gale are also
playing in this week’s ITF event,
where they are seeded in both the
singles and doubles. Cashmere
plays Shirley at Cashmere on
Saturday and Bishopdale plays
Waimairi at Waimairi.
Young driver one step closer to F1 dream
• By Daniel Alvey
PROMISING young
Christchurch racing driver
Louis Sharp is preparing to
shift up a gear on his journey to
Formula One.
The 16-year-old flew back
to the United Kingdom on
Tuesday ahead of the GB3
Championship, formerly known
as the British F3 Championship.
Sharp won the 2023 ROCKiT
F4 British Championship in the
final race for the year on the
weekend in October.
The championship win
earned him a spot in Rodin
Motorsport’s GB3 programme
the next step up from F4.
“(I’m) looking forward to
heading back over and getting
into the racing shortly,” he said.
Sharp scored six wins, 14
podiums and two pole positions
in F4, but said this year will be
another challenge.
“(It’s) definitely going to
be a bit more of a challenge,
obviously, learning a new car.
I’m lucky enough to have done
a couple of test days already,”
Sharp said.
Sharp and his dad Jason
spend most of the year in
the UK, returning to his
Northwood family home over
Christmas.
“It is tough. I don’t really get
to see my mum or my sister for
10 or 11 months of the year. I do
miss them a lot, but it is (part
of) all of the sacrifices I have to
make to hopefully achieve my
dream of Formula One,” Sharp
said.
Compared to the F4 car, the
GB3 car has an increased level
of downforce and is a naturally
aspirated engine compared to
the turbocharged F4 car.
In December Sharp won the
Henry Surtees Award for the
most outstanding performance
among the British Racing
Driver Club’s Rising Stars,
an award previously won by
current F1 drivers Daniel
Riccardo, Lando Norris and
Oscar Piastri.
Despite being new to the
cars and not having experience
driving on some of the tracks,
Sharp is aiming to be top of the
class.
“I wouldn’t be racing if
I wasn’t aiming to win, so
back-to-back titles is certainly
the aim. However, it is a new
category, so I’ve got to take that
into account.
“Even so, I definitely want
to be fighting at the front, and
SUCCESS: Louis Sharp,16, won
the 2023 ROCKiT F4 British
Championship in October and
will start preparations for the GB3
Championship next week.
fighting for the championship.”
Sharp will be back testing in
the GB3 car next week, before
the eight-round championship
starts on March 30.
• Another promising
Canterbury driver Jacob
Douglas is yet to confirm his
2024 plans after missing out on
a full-time seat in USF Pro 2000
in the United States.

Looking back on a great trip to Aussie
• By Sam Coughlan
IN 1974 the Lancaster Park colts
cricket team undertook a fivematch
tour of Melbourne.
Fifty years on, the team
reunited to celebrate the trip
with a weekend of fun, on and
off the field.
They caught up at the
Christchurch Casino on Saturday
night and followed up with
a match amongst themselves on
Sunday at Lancaster Park – now
a community ground after the
demolition of the stadium in
2019.
The 1974 team featured two
players who would go on to
higher honours – Mark Johnson
made the New Zealand U20
team and Glenn Bateman played
39 times for Canterbury in the
1980s, and many progressed
to play senior
cricket.
Bateman
organised the
event and said
it was enjoyable
catching up
with his old
teammates.
“We hadn’t
seen one another
Glenn
Bateman
in about 50 years, but, walking
into the room, everybody
recognised one another, the
voices were the same,” he said.
“It was just tremendous.”
YOUNGSTERS AT HEART: The Lancaster Park colts team of 1974 who played five matches
in Melbourne, pictured at Lancaster Park at the weekend. Clockwise from top-left: Alan
Barnes, Ian Gordon, Peter Hewson, Mark Johnston, Glenn Bateman, Miles Jackson, Howard
Chellew, Chris Astle, Iain Malcom, Shane Cave.
Bateman said the team had
enjoyed a robust social life while
on tour.
“The manager had his hands
full supervising us.
“In one of the first motels, we
made a pyramid of beer cans
that reached the roof after two
nights!
“We definitely let out hair
down . . . and in those days it was
very long.”
Some players had travelled
from the North Island
and Australia to
be there for
the reunion
at the
weekend.
Despite
the
group
being in
their late 60s,
Bateman said they
kept themselves fit and
managed Sunday’s
game okay.
“I played
senior
suburban
cricket
until I
was 50,
so only 18
years ago,”
he said.
“And others
have been playing bowls, so we
weren’t a bunch of relics, but I
think by Sunday afternoon most
of us were pretty sore.”
Bateman said the group
enjoyed the game, where they
split into five teams and took
turns batting and bowling
against one another.
Johnson and Peter Hewson
were the winners on the day
while Bateman and Chris
Astle, uncle of former Black
Cap Nathan Astle, finished
second.
They celebrated with some
food and drink at the Fitz 2
Sports Bar across the road from
Lancaster Park – the location of
the old clubrooms and indoor
training facilities that the team
used when they played.
“The whole weekend was
built around bringing back
memories,” Bateman said.
“I’m very chuffed with how it
all went.”
Bateman said the group
would look to celebrate the 55th
anniversary in 2029.
“I handed out phone numbers
and email addresses at the end so
we’ll try and keep in touch.
“Now we’ve done the
traditional one after 50, we’ve
thrown in the hat that we might
go to the North Island next time
to make it easier for those who
came from there this year.”
WeeK four: upping the pace
This week we will step it up a bit more. The beginners group will progress to the stage that most of the walking is replaced by
slow jogging and the intermediate group are starting to incorporate some efforts in zone 2. Remember that zone 1 is perceived
as an easy effort which you can maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you will get slightly puffed but you can still have a
conversation. You go from jogging in zone 1 to a proper running movement in zone 2 with the main difference being that zone
1 has a slower rhythm, staying low to the ground where as zone 2 brings extra spring in your step combined with an increase in
leg turnover (stride rate). The intermediate group introduces zone 2 pace as 2 minute repetitions alternated by 2 minute easy
jogging. Zone 2 to 3 will be the recommended pace for the City to Surf event for the intermediate group while the beginners
will mainly stay in zone 1 and 2.
The difference between walking and jogging is not only decided by the rhythm of the movement but also how and where you
land your feet. When jogging most efficiently you land on your mid-foot under the centre of gravity of the body, which, in the
upright position, is located in the pelvis just behind the midline of the body. With a slight forward lean of the body you can use
gravity to pull you forward while your legs keep you upright and push you in a forward direction. Walking is done in a more
upright position and most of us land on our heel first and roll over the outside of our foot before pushing off with our forefoot. It
helps to keep your core (lower abdomen, back, pelvis and hips) well supported by pushing your pelvis slightly forward. This will
stop you from “sitting” and over striding.
To achieve this goal you
need to develop some
awareness around the
basic requirements of
exercising for health and
fitness. First and foremost
this has to do with 3 key
principles:
1. How often do you train? To
improve your level of health and
fitness you will need to aim for 4
sessions per week. 2 or 3 sessions per
week will only maintain what you have and 1
session per week is definitely not sufficient.
2. How long are your sessions? The duration
of your sessions will generally build towards
between 30 and 50 minutes with one longer
session of 60-80 minutes.
3. What is the right intensity to train at? The
good thing about the programme is that all
your runs will be done at submaximal pace,
also called conversation pace. That means a
pace where you can still talk. If you can’t talk
you are going too fast and you are likely to
come to a grinding halt sooner or later.
This programme and accompanying information are written
as a guide only. If you are concerned about your health at
any stage please undergo a health check with your GP.
tIP of the WeeK
There is no need to bring fluids with you
during the sessions as you are not exercising
long and hard enough to cause serious
dehydration. Even on warm (north-west)
days it is sufficient to have a glass of water
or juice just before you go out. You can
re-hydrate on your return home, again with
water and/or a glass of fruit juice. Taking
fluids during exercise is generally not
required until you start to exceed 90 minutes
on a normal day and 60 minutes on a hot
day (temperatures above 25 degrees).
GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Build your hot house in the sun
IF YOU don’t have a glasshouse
but are keen on gardening, you
should invest in one.
It can be a plastic or glass structure
and if you have to choose
between the two, go for glass as
you only have to replace broken
panes – not all of the plastic every
few years.
Plastic is cheaper, especially if
you build your own. It takes only
a little bit of building skills to construct
an ‘A’ frame using 50mm x
50mm wood and covering it with
horticulture plastic film. Alternatively,
cover with a clear light-type
nova lite.
The bigger the house, the more
ventilation is needed.
The door is one major vent, and
one or more roof vents should
be included. Never paint or use
shade cloth on the outside of
glasshouses. Wash once a year
in autumn. With right use of the
vents and water you can keep the
temperature from getting too hot
in summer.
(If you need to shade the house
in a hot summer you can make
up a slurry of hydrated lime and
water and paint this over the
outside of the glass.)
Plants unable to stand full hot
sun can be placed under benches
for shade or string up some
shade cloth over the sun-sensitive
plants.
Many gardeners have an earth
floor in their glasshouses so they
can grow directly into the earth.
Soil can harbour diseases which
will likely effect plants. Always
opt for a concrete floor and grow
all plants in containers. This
makes it easy to remove a plant if
it becomes diseased. Concrete has
other advantages – it is easy to
clean, weeds can’t grow on clean
concrete; it is also a heat trap that
releases warmth when the sun
goes down.
On hot sunny days you can wet
the concrete and the evaporation
will cool the glasshouse. If you are
unable to lay a concrete floor then
place weed mat over the soil and
cover with pea metal, a couple
of inches thick. Another choice
would be weed mat with pavers,
cobbles or bricks. In these cases,
dirt will build up over time and
• By Claire Mummery
THERE ARE two types of
tomatoes — plants that grow
in a bush and plants that need
staking. The bush varieties are
self-supporting, produce early in
the growing season and tend to
produce a lot of fruit at once. The
staking varieties produce more
consistently and have a longer
growing season.
Create airflow around the base
and throughout the plant. This
lets the wind through and can
keep your plant free of pests and
disease.
To thin the leaves, remove the
first 30cm of lateral stems and
you likely will need to do a bit of
weeding.
Positioning of the glasshouse
is important and you should try
to locate where it’s going to get as
much sun as possible, in the winter.
(It will also get maximum sun
in the summer too unless shaded
by deciduous trees.)
One side of the house should
face north and that will be the
sunny side of your house. On this
leaves from the ground by snapping
them off at the main stalk.
Tomatoes are hungry plants
and need regular feeding on
a weekly or fortnightly basis.
They prefer phosphorous and
potassium in higher quantities,
which can be found in a kelp and
organic fish emulsion fertiliser.
These nutrients will improve the
fruit crop and aid in preventing
blossom end rot.
If you have a fireplace, a side
dressing of potash (wood ash
contains potash) throughout the
growing season will give you
a natural supply of potassium;
apply at the base of the plant
and water in well. Chopped up
SUN-FRIENDLY: Cool and
refresh hot house plants
with water. This will help
ripen tomatoes.
side you should grow your tomato
plants and cucumbers. The
other side should have a small
workbench – or better, a bench
running the whole length of that
side – ideal for seedling trays, cuttings,
growing on lines and small
container plants you fancy. Space
under the bench can be used for
pot storage and plants that need a
shaded situation.
If you want to use an irrigation
system, install a dripper type.
Water only with a soft wand late
in the day. Keep a bucket of water
in the glasshouse and on hot days,
during the day, if any plants need
some water use a cup of water
from the bucket.
Try to keep the temperature
below 30 deg C and ideally at
about 25 deg C. Good ventilation
and water on the concrete can
keep the inside temperature lower
than the outside.
How to grow a crop of healthy tomatoes
banana peels around the base are
also a great source of phosphorous.
Liquid feeding your plants
over summer is preferable.
Watering your tomatoes on a
regular basis is essential for even
and productive growth. Watering
three times a week is enough;
this encourages their roots to go
deep into the soil where it is cool.
If you’re growing tomatoes in
pots, fill the base tray with water
so the plant can pull it up from
the bottom.
Always water the base of the
plant and not the leaves to help
prevent pests and disease, and
always water in the cool of the day.
Cars Wanted
The presentation of your home doesn’t mean
spending thousands on an upgrade either!
So why wouldn’t you want to do everything
possible to make it appealing to prospective
purchasers?
Street appeal
The exterior of your home is the first thing buyers
will see, so the property needs to look well-kept and
inviting. Cut the lawns, trim trees, plants and hedges,
add some garden lights and place a nice pot or plant
by the front door. Ensure the house exterior is cleaned
or freshened with new paint if necessary, hose down
drives, paths and fences, put stylish new numbers on
the house and perhaps buy a funky new letter box!
Make an entrance
Even if your entrance or hallway is small, you can
still give it some wow! A large mirror adds light and
makes an entrance look twice the size. Ensure floors
are clean whether timber, tiles or carpet.
Create space
Light, air and space are three key factors in
presenting a home to the best advantage. Open
up curtains and windows and use lamps and light
fittings for mood and ambience. Arrange furniture
to maximise space and remove items that make the
room appear cramped.
Fresh feel
Freshen rooms with new paint if necessary. Add
a splash of colour in cushions, throws, artwork or a
vase of flowers. Invest in a new duvet or bedspread
and throughout always make the Christchurch
bed!
Clear out clutter
Storage space sells but clutter complicates! Clean
out your cupboards, shelves and garage, and get rid of
Presenting your
home for sale?
The way you present your home not only makes selling it easier, but
it may sell faster and increase the price a buyer is prepared to pay.
COLOUR
TO YOUR ADVERT!
unnecessary clutter.
Beautify the bathroom
Replace or resurface fittings if necessary, but
otherwise you can simply beautify your bathroom
with thorough and fastidious cleaning, thick opulent
towels, a tray of beautiful soaps and some lush, green
plants.
Clean clean clean
Cleaning is a mandatory part of selling your home:
have carpets, rugs and upholstery commercially
cleaned and sanitised, clean drapes and blinds to look
like new, polish glass and furniture, wash down all
surfaces and fittings in the bathroom and kitchen,
clean all light fittings, wash windows inside and out,
deodorise your home to eliminate any odours from
pets, cooking or smoke.
Outdoor spaces
Even a small patio, deck or terrace can be enhanced
with a café table and chairs. Add some colourful
accessories – placemats, candle lamps, pots and
plants, and there you have an extra living area.
Hire a handyman
Squeaking doors, dripping taps, cracked tiles,
broken fences, leaking toilets or appliances that don’t
work are a turn-off for buyers. If you can’t repair
or replace things yourself, then hire a handyman
to make sure everything in your home works as it
should.
Finish it first
Buyers want to see a finished home, not one that’s
still being fixed! So finish everything before you list
your home for sale, then launch it onto the market
when it looks its absolute best – you have nothing to
lose and everything to gain!
We are interested in hearing from journalists with any level of
experience.
Remuneration will be relative to experience.
