Extensive work on intersection upgrades to finish in June
MAJOR ROAD works,
including intersection upgrades,
road resurfacing and water main
renewals, have started in Ilam,
Bryndwr and Burnside.
The work will run on the city
council transport and three
waters projects until June.
It will include upgrades to
three busy intersections – Athol
Tce and Waimairi Rd, Clyde Rd
and Ilam Rd, as well as Clyde
Rd and Greers Rd – to improve
safety.
Contractors are also continuing
construction of the Te Ara
O-Rakipaoa Nor’West Arc
Cycleway along Ilam Rd between
Memorial Ave and Ilam Fields.
Old water pipes will be
replaced on Memorial Ave
between Ilam Rd and Roydvale
Ave, as well as odour control
work on University Drive. There
will be resurfacing work on
sections of Grahams Rd and
Roydvale Ave.
Said city council transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright: “This
is a huge
package of
work, and we
know road
works are
disruptive so
we’re taking a
high impact,
short duration
Stephen
approach
Wright
and doing
everything in the area at once to
get out of people’s way as quickly
as possible and minimise the
impact on the area in the longer
term.
“The bulk of the work began
in early January to make the
most of the quieter holiday
period for residents and before
students head back to school and
university.”
While some of the projects
will be finished by March, the
Memorial Ave water main
renewal work will run into May
SHUFFLE BALL change, time
step, and buffalo are just a
few of the most common tap
dancing moves – ones which
Molly Chapman knows very
well.
As the director and vice president
of an all-female competitive
tap-dancing team, Moll’s
Dolls, Chapman, who teaches
the team and competes alongside
them, has been preparing
for several months for the 35th
New Zealand Masters Games.
The event will take place in
Dunedin from February 3-11,
and the group of 35 to 70-yearolds
will dance the nights away,
competing against four teams
in the formation dance and
show dance categories of the
dance-sport section.
The group will also compete
as duos, triples and quad teams
in the under-50s and over-50s
categories.
• Turn to page 5
and the Nor’West Arc Cycleway
construction will continue
through to June.
“The work has been planned to
keep traffic flowing as smoothly
as possible but if you’re
travelling through the area,
particularly to the airport or for
school pickups and drop-offs,
please allow for extra time,”
Wright said.
“Thanks for your patience as
we replace old pipes and make
our streets way safer.”
Cedars felled at social housing unit
a ‘shame’, says resident
• By Sasha Watson
A LONG-STAY social housing
resident is feeling deflated after
finding out five large cedar trees,
that once provided the units
with a sense of tranquillity and
shelter, will be felled.
Garry Roberts,
who has lived at
Aorangi Courts
in Bryndwr for
about five years
in a unit next
to the cedars, is
confused as to
why the more
than 50-year-old
trees were not just
pruned back.
Garry
Roberts
“I really believe the trees would
benefit from a good trim – just
taking off a third of the top and
a prune back of the overhanging
branches, not a full felling. It will
change the character of the area,”
said Roberts.
But Ōtautahi Community
Housing Trust chief executive
Cate Kearney said trimming the
trees could prove problematic.
“We were advised by an
arborist that significant pruning
could destabilise the trees,” she
said.
“We’ve asked our tree maintenance
contractor to remove them
HEAT PUMP
“A local team for local people”
SCENERY: Five large cedar trees are to be felled at Aorangi
Courts in Bryndwr, and replaced with native trees.
and to replace them with native
species.
“We hope the new trees and
the amenity they’ll provide will
add to our community well into
the future.”
Roberts said “it seemed a
shame” that the trees were being
felled as they protected the units
and their inhabitants against elements
such as wind, rain and the
sun, and if the trees were to be
preserved and looked after, they
would be “a good something to
pass on to the next generation.”
“Cutting the cedars down is
not just about the trees, it’s about
the nature and wildlife that
comes from having them too.”
Built in the late 1970s, the
Aorangi Courts complex consists
of 18 single-story units, four
ground-floor units, and four
top-floor units, which are owned
by the city council and leased to
Ōtautahi Community Housing
Trust.
“Council staff contacted us
to discuss removing the trees
at the request of the Waimāero
Fendalton-Waimari-Harewood
Community Board, following a
public forum presentation to the
board by Aorangi Courts neighbours,”
said Kearney.
TreeTech Specialist Tree Care
Ltd began felling the trees on
Monday and work is expected to
take two weeks, depending on
the weather.
Works will include the removal
of the trees, stump grinding,
tidying up, and replanting, as
well as follow-up works to remedy
any damage caused to lawns
and gardens.
While two neighbours have
opposed the tree felling, Roberts
said the majority of neighbours
living at the courts reacted positively
or apathetically when he
spoke to them.
“Someone wanting to buy a
property or those wanting to sell
Late Nights & Sunday appointments available
may want to get rid of the cedars
and I’m not disputing anyone’s
views but there is a balance.
“Right now, I feel this is quite a
poor effort. A bit underhanded.
It seems like taking the easy option,”
said Roberts.
“The trees make me happy –
even on a not-nice day, I wake up
to them and nature and it makes
me feel good. I cannot stress
how important the connection
between nature and mental
health is.
“Most of us at the courts are
trying to push s**t up the hill
and when you have an idyllic
space with trees, ducks, hedgehogs,
butterflies, and four to five
feedable doves, it helps.”
Competing a ‘life highlight’ for dancers
• From page 1
Chapman, 65, said: “The
masters is one of the only
competitions where we get
to showcase our talents and
compete against other groups.
We are really excited about
competing as representatives of
our local community.
“We’re also a masters games
award-winning team, having
won gold, silver and bronze
medals in the formation team
and dance sport at the last four
games.”
The team has received a New
Zealand Community Trust
grant of $2000 to help with the
running of two minivans and
accommodation costs.
Chapman donned her first pair
of tap shoes when she was four
and never looked back. Born
and raised in Dunedin, she now
lives in Bromley and has been
teaching dance for more than 45
years.
She passed her love of dance
onto her late daughter Nicola,
who died six years ago, and her
son Hayden, who graduated
MOLL’S DOLLS:
Dancers have
been practising
twice a week
for the past
few months in
preparation for
the competition
in Dunedin next
month.
from the American Musical and
Dramatic Academy in 2014 and
is now a New York-based off-
Broadway performer.
“I love dancing, it has been a
full family affair. It brings me so
much joy and I believe it is never
too late to learn how to dance,”
Chapman said.
“Moll’s Dolls is about being,
dancing and competing together
and enjoying yourself. We’re one
of very few tap-dancing teams
that actively compete . . . and we
have an absolute blast.”
The group was founded in
2015 and came about when the
mother of a young girl Chapman
was teaching suggested setting
up a class for adults, as well as
preschoolers.
It was while attending a masters
games event with a softball
team that Chapman became
aware of the dance-sports category
and soon after began setting
up a competitive dance team.
Team member and performer
Julie Riker said Molls Doll’s was
their “senior sports club” and
provided an invaluable sense
of community, happiness, and
health.
”Being able to dance with
childhood friends some fifty
years later and travel to the NZ
Masters Games in Dunedin will
be a life highlight for me.”
COMPETE: Moll’s Dolls have won gold,
silver and bronze medals at the past four
Masters Games.
The group offers classes for
women of all skill levels at St
John’s Church in Woolston,
ranging from absolute beginners
to seasoned tappers, and offers
the opportunity to dance at
corporate functions, community
events, rest homes and other
performances.
Said Angela Yannakis, who
is also a part of the performing
team: “Moll’s Dolls are a funloving
dance group with one
thing in common – a passion for
tap dancing.
“We constantly strive not only
to perform to a high standard but
also to have the most wonderful
time doing it.”
Feeding vulnerable communities
a team effort, says award recipient
• By Sasha Watson
FOUNDING charities to
stabilise food insecurity in
schools and vulnerable groups
has seen community advocate
Verity Verster receive a city
council civic award.
The Shirley resident was
surprised to be recognised for
her voluntary services at the city
council’s annual ceremony.
“In November, I was informed
that I had won an award. I didn’t
know I was nominated so it was
a bit of a surprise.”
Verster, a social worker,
founded Kai for the Community
Charitable Trust, in 2018 and
Mums on Meals in 2020.
Kai for the Community, which
was started to address food
poverty within the central city,
is run by volunteers who provide
in-house hot meal services.
“I feel like an imposter
receiving this award because
it isn’t just me, there are
many people, volunteers, and
supporters who are working in
the background, who should
receive it too,” Verster said.
“We also offer social
needs support and practical
information to external agencies
to about 110 people from
ACKNOWLEDGED: Verity Verster receiving her award from Mayor Phil Mauger and Linwood Ward councillor Yani Johanson,
and with the Kai for the Community team.
vulnerable communities every
Sunday afternoon.”
Mums on Meals is a division
of Kai for the Community with
eight volunteers who work on
a rostered system, catering for
selected Christchurch East
schools that do not qualify for
Government or other agencies’
funding programmes.
“The division works closely
with social workers in schools to
identify the children in need
and support them with homecooked
and high-nutritional
meals, like cottage pie and
lasagne served with vegetables,”
said Verster.
“We are currently working
with about 40 to 50 children.
Food insecurity does not just
affect the individual, it is the
entire classroom feeling those
effects too.”
Both Kai
for the
Community
and Mums
on Meals
aim to
stabilise food
insecurity in
schools and
vulnerable
communities.

McKenzie aims for Paralympics
• By Dylan Smits
MCKENZIE DRAGE is in
the pool six days a week in
preparation for the New Zealand
championships in April, with
a long-term goal of competing
at the Los Angeles 2028
Paralympics Games.
The 19-year-old was born with
Apert syndrome, but it has never
stopped her from pursuing her
dreams.
“I am very determined and like
to face challenges with a positive
mindset,” she said.
Apert syndrome causes fusion
of bones in the fingers, toes, and
head and neck. Various surgeries
were needed during Drage’s infancy
and childhood to improve
her quality of life.
“School and social life have
been a challenge but I’ve never
let my disability hold me back
from setting goals and achieving
them,” she said.
When swimming, Apert
syndrome mainly affects Drage’s
range of movement as she cannot
fully extend her arms, neck or
shoulders.
“I have limited reach and kicking
ability, but I follow a daily
stretching programme to try and
develop my flexibility.”
Drage works part time as
a lifeguard at Jellie Park. She
attended Hagley College until
graduating last year and lives on
the family farm near McQueens
Chicken feet an
unwelcome find
WHAT
A CASEBROOK couple feared
their children or pets could
have been poisoned after raw
chicken feet painted with pink
nail polish on the claws were
thrown onto a Cavendish Rd
property.
The house was also egged
earlier this month, but it was
the unusually decorated chicken
feet which concerned the adult
occupants, who wished to
remain anonymous.
Although a common pet food
for dogs, uncooked chicken
feet can cause outbreaks of
bacteria-related salmonella,
campylobacter and listeria.
“The nail polish can be toxic
and we’ve got no idea what else
could have been done to them,”
said the mother-of-two.
Her children are aged two and
six, while there is also a cat in the
household.
“We had six (chicken feet)
dotted across our front lawn. Our
cat was trying to eat them, we
had to get her away from them,”
she said.
“We also have young children
on the property so they’re a
potential danger to them as well.
RAW EMOTION: A
Casebook couple were
appalled to find potentially
harmful raw chicken feet
on their lawn after their
property was targeted by
pranksters.
“It was quite disturbing to us
and it would have been just as
disturbing to the children, had
they seen them.”
The chicken feet were found in
the early hours of January 5, and
it was not an isolated incident,
leading the woman to believe
local youth were emulating a
social media trend.
“Apparently there is some viral
TikTok prank about this which
originated in America,” she
said.
“Our best guess is someone
is trying to replicate it here. It
surprise me if there’s a video of it
happening here as well.”
The woman, who lodged
a report with police and is
awaiting the chicken feet to be
taken away for analysis, posted
her concerns on the Bishopdale/
Burnside/Casebrook Community
Facebook page and soon learned
other members had been
targeted.
Another Cavendish Rd resident
found chicken feet crammed into
a letterbox the same morning; a
woman who lives on Casebrook’s
Regents Park Drive found
chicken feet on her car.
Pizza boxes into
recycling, aerosol
cans into rubbish
YOU can place in your
yellow, green, and red bins for
kerbside collection is changing
to make sorting waste easier
across the country.
From February 1, the
Government is standardising
what materials can be collected
from households for recycling
and organics across the
country.
The only items able to be
recycled from home will be
plastic bottles, clear meat
trays and containers number 1,
2 and 5, food and drink tins and
cans, paper and cardboard, and
glass bottles and jars.
Christchurch residents will be
able to put empty pizza boxes
into the yellow recycling bin.
Tea bags, shredded paper,
serviettes, paper towels and
aerosol cans will need to go into
the red rubbish bin. All lids, soft
plastics and drink cartons must
continue to go in the red bin.
Collecting the same materials
through kerbside collections
will make it easier for everyone
to put items in the correct bin,
no matter where they are in New
Zealand.
Residents can still drop off
their recycling and hazardous
waste items for free at the
EcoDrop recycling centres,
as well as dispose of large
quantities of green waste or
refuse at the transfer stations.
“As usual, it’s important to
prepare your items for kerbside
collection,” says city council
manager resource recovery Dr
Alec McNeil.
“This means taking the lids
off any bottles or containers and
rinsing all items before placing
them in your recycling bin,
without bagging or squashing
them.
“Christchurch residents
are good at recycling, so it’s
important to keep it this way
and continue to put the right
items in the right bins.”
Asian inspired keto creations
Thai beef salad
Serves 4
Gluten, Sugar, Dairy and Egg Free
For the zesty Thai dressing
1 Tbsp fresh ginger, finely grated
½-1 chilli, seeds discarded,
finely chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 Tbsp fish sauce
1 lime, zest and juice
1 tsp rice wine vinegar or apple
cider vinegar
30g Allulose (or another easy
dissolving sweetener)
1 tsp Dijon mustard
2 Tbsp sesame oil
2 Tbsp fresh coriander, finely
sliced
½ tsp salt
For the salad
400g scotch fillet steak, left
covered at room temperature for
30 minutes prior
3 Tbsp olive oil
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cracked black pepper
120g mesclun
50g mung beans or bean sprouts
8 cherry tomatoes, quartered
¼ small red onion, finely sliced
¼ cucumber, diced
2 Tbsp fresh coriander, roughly
chopped
1 Tbsp fresh mint, roughly
chopped
30g peanuts, chopped
Method
• First, make the dressing by
putting everything in a jar and
shaking to combine or whisk it all
together in a bowl. You can make
a larger batch of this and leave it
in the fridge for a ready-made,
light and fresh salad dressing, just
omit the coriander so it doesn’t
discolour.
• Heat a heavy-based frying pan
over a high heat.
• Rub the steak with the oil, salt
and pepper. Once the pan is very
hot, add the steak and cook on
high to your liking. Once the steak
is cooked, remove it from the pan
and let it rest while you prepare
the rest of the salad.
• On a large serving platter,
scatter the mesclun on the
bottom, then arrange the mung
beans, cherry tomatoes, red onion,
cucumber and herbs over the top.
• Once the steak has rested for
at least 5 minutes, slice it and pat
dry any excess juices with a
paper towel.
• Lay the steak
on top of the
salad, sprinkle
over the
chopped
peanuts,
season
lightly with
salt and
pepper,
then drizzle
over about
half of the
dressing (you
can add more as
desired) and serve.
Nutrition note: Apple cider
vinegar is believed to help
moderate blood sugar levels, as
well as lower cholesterol.
Spring onion pancakes
recipe
Makes 4
Suitable for GF, sugar free, plantbased
Ingredients
200g ground almonds
30g psyllium husk powder
2 tsp Xanthan gum
1 tsp baking powder, gluten-free
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp White pepper
100ml to 170ml boiling water
2 spring onions, thinly sliced
4 Tbsp olive oil
Method
• Place the ground
almonds, psyllium
husk,
xanthan
gum,
baking
powder,
salt
and
pepper
into a
bowl.
Whisk
to combine
and
remove any
lumps.
• Add 100ml
boiling water to begin with and
stir to mix, adding a little more
water as needed to make a dough.
It can look dryer than it is, so it’s
best to get your hands in to feel it!
• Wrap the dough in cling
film and set aside for 5 minutes.
The psyllium husk will absorb
a bit more liquid so the rest
time is essential so you can add
more water, if needed, before
continuing.
• After 5 minutes, unwrap the
dough and squeeze it. It should
feel a bit tacky but not crack too
much. If needed, knead in a little
more water.
• Cut the dough into four.
Working with one piece at a
time, roll out between two sheets
of baking paper into a circle
about 2mm thick. Sprinkle over
a quarter of the chopped spring
onion, then fold it in half. Roll
again to 2mm thick, then repeat
the process with the remaining
dough.
• Preheat a non-stick frying pan
over a medium heat. Once warm,
add 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1
or 2 pancakes, depending on the
size of your pan.
• Cook over medium heat until
golden brown on each side.
• Repeat the cooking process
with the remaining pancakes.
Nutrition Note: Psyllium husk
is a rich source of fibre for
maintaining good gut health, and
it helps with glycaemic control.
Hilux overhaul results in a more supple drive
TOYOTA IS looking to rival the
top selling new Ford Ranger with
some upgrades to its current
Hilux, launched in 2015.
With an all-new replacement
still 18 months away this
version is feeling the sales heat
from a bevy of newer rivals.
The reputation that surrounds
the Hilux brand and the loyal
customer base will help it in
the sales scrap. However, that
will only go so far, and Toyota
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
has responded with some
worthwhile changes to its
flagship Hilux 4WD SR5
Cruiser.
The major talking point is the
upgraded suspension and wider
track, with increases of around
140mm front and rear. One thing
you notice almost immediately
is the substantial 20mm increase
in rise height to around 250mm.
This should be plenty for
more adventurous owners to
comfortably navigate
even the trickiest
cross-country
terrain.
To accommodate
the track increase,
Toyota engineers
overhauled the
suspension, with
the Hilux sporting a
rear stabilizer bar for
the first time. How
radical is that! As a result of a
bevy of suspension changes, roll
rigidity has been enhanced by 20
per cent, improving steering feel
when cornering.
More effective stopping
power is provided by new rear
ventilated disc brakes in place of
the former drum brake set-up,
while slightly larger front disc
brakes are convincing show
stoppers.
Those seeking a more
upmarket ute will find it in the
premium $63,390 SR5 Cruiser
six-speed automatic being
reviewed here.
Ample power is provided
by Toyota’s super dependable
150kW 2.8-litre turbo-diesel.
There’s an abundance of low
speed pulling power with
500Nm more torque than the
motor it replaced three years
ago. On the open road, the
engine is strong and effortless in
everything it does.
In low speed town driving,
I felt noise levels were overly
intrusive for a premium ute.
The motor revels in off-road
terrain with plenty of throttle
response and pulling power.
The six-speed automatic is an
oldie but definitely a goodie and
perfectly paired to the motor –
and it should be, as they’ve been
working as a top-notch gear
changing combo for eight years.
Thanks to the wide body
enhancements the double cab
feels bigger and more generously
provisioned than before. It’s
loaded with car-like features
such as a driver seat height
adjustment, and there is a
telescopic and height adjustable
steering column. The steering
wheel houses multi-media and
phone controls with Bluetooth
capability. The touchscreen has
been upgraded and the audio
system now includes Apple
CarPlay® and Android AutoTM.
The premium ute push
continues with niceties such
as push button engine start,
carpeted cabin, satellite
navigation, LED daytime
running lights and chrome
exterior door handles. Standard
features include a 9-speaker
audio system, 18-inch alloys,
leather seating, full-size alloy
spare wheel and a driver seats
with 8-way power adjustments.
Star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of
10: 7
There’s an equally impressive
arsenal of safety kit. This is
delivered by Toyota’s acclaimed
Safety Sense package that adds
a pre-collision system with
autonomous emergency braking
for vehicles, pedestrians and
cyclists, plus dynamic radar
cruise control, lane departure
alert and road sign assist. A
reversing camera takes out the
guesswork when reversing.
Drivability would go up a
level or two if more work went
into tuning the steering, so it’s
sharper and more responsive.
It lacks those two critical
ingredients, and consequently
is off the class-leading ride
and handling pace set by the
excellent Ford Ranger.
