Moll’s Dolls take to the stage
MOLL’S
DOLLS:
Dancers
have been
practising
twice a
week for
the past few
months in
preparation
for the
competition
in Dunedin
next month.
• By Sasha Watson
SHUFFLE BALL change, time
step, and buffalo are just a few of
the most common tap dancing
moves – ones which Molly
Chapman knows very well.
As the director and vice president
of an all-female competitive
tap-dancing team, Moll’s Dolls,
Chapman, who teaches the team
and competes alongside them,
has been preparing for several
months for the 35th New Zealand
Masters Games.
The event will take place in
Dunedin from February 3-11,
and the group of 35 to 70-yearolds
will dance the nights away,
competing against four teams in
the formation dance and show
dance categories of the dancesport
section.
The group will also compete
as duos, triples and quad teams
in the under-50s and over-50s
categories.
Chapman, 65, said: “The
masters is one of the only
competitions where we get to
showcase our talents and compete
against other groups. We are
really excited about competing
as representatives of our local
community.
“We’re also a masters games
award-winning team, having won
gold, silver and bronze medals
in the formation team and dance
sport at the last four games.”
The team has received a New
Zealand Community Trust
grant of $2000 to help with the
running of two minivans and
accommodation costs.
Cooperative Care Training for Stress-Free Pet Healthcare
Does your dog turn into an escape artist
at the mere sight of nail clippers? Do
attempts to clean their ears or brush
their teeth feel like an ongoing battle? If
you thought there was no way to achieve
these tasks, we have another solution –
Cooperative Care training. This approach
focuses on building trust, cooperation,
and positive relationships between pets
and their owners, aiming to make vet
visits, grooming, and other essential
healthcare tasks a stress-free and enjoyable
experience for both pets and their human
companions.
Banish Stress with Cooperative Care
The core principle of Cooperative Care training
is to eliminate stress from your pet’s health care
routines. By associating these activities with
positive experiences, such as tasty treats and
gentle handling, your pet learns to embrace vet visits,
grooming sessions, and other necessary healthcare tasks
without anxiety.
Build a Stronger Bond through Enhanced
Communication
Cooperative Care isn’t just about your pet; it’s about
strengthening the bond between you and your furry
companion. Through positive reinforcement and clear
communication, you’ll develop a deeper connection
with your pet. Imagine a scenario where your pet
willingly participates in their care routines, creating an
environment of trust and understanding.
Unlock the Secret to Improved Well-Being
Pets comfortable with healthcare procedures tend to be
healthier and happier overall. Cooperative Care training
ensures that your pet not only tolerates but actively
enjoys these routines, contributing to their overall wellbeing.
From routine vet check-ups to
grooming sessions, the positive associations formed
during training lead to a happier and healthier pet.
Empowering Pet Owners with Valuable Skills
Beyond benefiting the pets, Cooperative Care training
empowers pet owners with valuable skills to confidently
and effectively care for their furry friends. Owners learn to
navigate healthcare routines with ease, ensuring that their
pets receive the care they need without
unnecessary stress or resistance.
Introducing Station Training: Your Pet’s
“Consent” to Care
A key component of Cooperative Care
training is station training, a practice
that involves teaching pets to willingly
participate in their care routines. By
introducing the concept of giving consent
to handling, station training sets the
foundation for positive interactions
between pets and their owners during
healthcare procedures.
In station training, pets learn that being
on their husbandry station (something
as simple as a mat or a towel reserved
specifically for this purpose) results in tasty
treats, creating a positive association. Once
they eagerly anticipate the station, you
can gradually introduce handling activities
such as massaging their paws, looking into
ears, or lifting the lip. The key is to stop handling if your
pet gets off the station, ensuring a positive experience
and gradual acclimatisation. The concept of consent in
handling, although relatively new in companion animal
training, has been successfully practiced by zoo staff for
years with a variety of animals.
Kowhai Vet Clinic invites pet owners to explore the world
of Cooperative Care training, where pets become active
and willing participants in their own care, leading to a
lifetime of positive and stress-free healthcare experiences.
The clinic is committed to advancing the well-being
of pets and fostering stronger bonds between owners
and their furry companions through innovative and
compassionate care.
Competing a ‘life highlight’
• From page 1
Chapman donned her first pair
of tap shoes when she was four
and never looked back. Born
and raised in Dunedin, she now
lives in Bromley and has been
teaching dance for more than 45
years.
She passed her love of dance
onto her late daughter Nicola,
who died six years ago, and her
son Hayden, who graduated
from the American Musical and
Dramatic Academy in 2014 and
is now a New York-based off-
Broadway performer.
“I love dancing, it has been a
full family affair. It brings me so
much joy and I believe it is never
too late to learn how to dance,”
Chapman said.
“Moll’s Dolls is about being,
dancing and competing together
and enjoying yourself. We’re one
of very few tap-dancing teams
that actively compete . . . and we
have an absolute blast.”
The group was founded in
2015 and came about when the
mother of a young girl Chapman
was teaching suggested setting
up a class for adults, as well as
preschoolers.
It was while attending a
masters games event with a
softball team that Chapman
became aware of the dancesports
category and soon after
began setting up a competitive
dance team.
Team member and performer
Julie Riker said Molls Doll’s was
their “senior sports club” and
provided an invaluable sense
of community, happiness, and
health.
”Being able to dance with
childhood friends some fifty
years later and travel to the NZ
Masters Games in Dunedin will
be a life highlight for me.”
The group offers classes for
women of all skill levels at St
John’s Church in Woolston,
ranging from absolute beginners
to seasoned tappers, and offers
the opportunity to dance at
corporate functions, community
events, rest homes and other
performances.
Said Angela Yannakis, who
is also a part of the performing
team: “Moll’s Dolls are a funloving
dance group with one
thing in common – a passion for
tap dancing.
“We constantly strive not only
to perform to a high standard but
also to have the most wonderful
time doing it.”
‘Munted’
Marshs Rd
on the
mend
• By Sasha Watson
“HERE’S TO no more winters
with a munted Marshs Rd,” is
Halswell Ward city councillor
Andrei Moore’s response to the
start of a long-awaited repair.
The works
to remove a
road shoulder
and fix up
potholes began
on Monday
and will go on
until February
2, weather Andrei
permitting. Moore
Road closures
are to be expected and there
will also be no on-street car
parking while the construction
is occurring.
Said Moore: “While it is a
slight inconvenience for about a
week, the fixing of the road will
be well worth it.
“It has been needed as the road
has been an absolute shocker for
many years and the general vibe
to these works is great.
“A local resident once
counted 450 individual repair
patches along here, so it really is
good to see this getting done.”
We turned to Cameron as we wanted the high profile that we knew would come
from listing with him. What we didn’t realise prior to dealing with him and his
amazing team is how geniune he is. Everything happened when it was meant to
and he held us together when we needed it. I also felt listened to and at no time
ever did I feel spoken down to, something I know a lot of agents can do.
Sam, who works as part of his team, was truely amazing and if she ever changes
McKenzie aims for Paralympics
• By Dylan Smits
MCKENZIE DRAGE is in
the pool six days a week in
preparation for the New Zealand
championships in April, with
a long-term goal of competing
at the Los Angeles 2028
Paralympics Games.
The 19-year-old was born with
Apert syndrome, but it has never
stopped her from pursuing her
dreams.
“I am very determined and like
to face challenges with a positive
mindset,” she said.
Apert syndrome causes fusion
of bones in the fingers, toes, and
head and neck. Various surgeries
were needed during Drage’s infancy
and childhood to improve
her quality of life.
“School and social life have
been a challenge but I’ve never
let my disability hold me back
from setting goals and achieving
them,” she said.
When swimming, Apert
syndrome mainly affects Drage’s
range of movement as she cannot
fully extend her arms, neck or
shoulders.
“I have limited reach and kicking
ability, but I follow a daily
stretching programme to try and
develop my flexibility.”
Drage works part time as
a lifeguard at Jellie Park. She
attended Hagley College until
graduating last year and lives on
the family farm near McQueens
Farm life has taught her how to
work hard.
“I’ve learned how to get jobs
done and be organised with my
time.”
The family owns 80 free range
chickens, and Drage is partly
responsible for selling their
eggs to customers in Christchurch.
She has always enjoyed swimming
and started competing in
year 11.
“Being able to swim well helps
me feel confident in any water.
I really like the discipline of
training hard and feeling fit and
healthy.”
Drage is part of the Aquagym
Swim Club where she is coached
by Emma Smith.
In September, she represented
New Zealand for the first time at
Cultivating gardening know-how
• By Dylan Smits
THE MANAGER of a
community garden in Sumner is
taking crop growing back to its
roots with the goal of creating a
self-sustaining food source.
Gavin Hawke, 54, has a
passion for horticulture, and he’s
using his skills in an effort to
increase local food security.
‘There’s nothing simpler in
life then actually building soil
and growing something. We’re
trying to show people how easy
it is to grow naturally.”
He Mara Kai – meaning ‘The
Food Garden’ – is a 2000m 2
section located on the corner of
Paisley St and Wakefield Ave.
It follows two key horticultural
principles that guide it
towards being a fertile and
self-sustaining food source, said
Hawke.
The first is hügelkultur or
“mound culture”, a technique
where a mound constructed
from decaying wood and plant
materials is used as a plant
bed.
“Wood will take 20 years to
break down and you won’t need
any fertiliser,” he said.
“The wood underneath works
as a slow release nutrient. It also
acts as a sponge for water.”
No digging is required.
“It’s about how to grow food
with the least amount of work.”
The second technique,
permaculture, is an approach to
land management where plants
are allowed to grow freely in an
unstructured layout.
Hawke said this encourages a
self-seeding garden, which will
eventually require little human
maintenance.
“We just want to help nature
take its natural course. We’re
pretty unique here because
there’s no structure really.”
The garden has 40 mounds of
different sizes which grow a wide
range of fruits, vegetables and
flowers.
Except for the first time a new
seed is planted, the garden does
not buy seeds.
“With permaculture,
everything selfseeds,”
Hawke
said.
GREEN THUMB: Gavin Hawke manages the He Mara
Kai community garden in Sumner. He’s motivated by
increasing food security and spreading awareness of
mound culture and permaculture.
and food security
VARIETY: Visitors to the garden can expect to see a range of crops from artichokes, apples
and plums to cabbages, carrots and kumara.
He started developing the
garden on land he leases from the
city council, opposite his home,
in June 2022. A software designer
by day, he spends his evenings
and weekends managing the
garden.
“There’s so much food there.
At any time of the year there’s
always something to eat.”
With the help of two volunteers,
Hawke is developing high
quality soil for the garden with
locally sourced compost.
They collect horse manure,
green bin waste, and coffee
grinds and food scraps from local
cafes.
“Eventually we will end up with
beautiful soil that is filled with
nutrients.”
Hawke’s long-term goal is to increase
food security and demonstrate
the effectiveness of mound
culture and permaculture.
“That garden could easily selfsustain
20 different families.”
Expanding his methods to
other empty land in Sumner
could increase food security even
further, Hawke said.
He wants the garden to become
a more collaborative effort in the
future, with more volunteers.
“People who can’t grow or
haven’t got the space are welcome
to come and help out and enjoy
the harvest.”
• People interested
in volunteering are
encouraged to head along
to the garden on weekends
Pizza boxes into
recycling, aerosol
cans into rubbish
WHAT YOU can place in your
yellow, green, and red bins for
kerbside collection is changing
to make sorting waste easier
across the country.
From February 1, the
Government is standardising
what materials can be collected
from households for recycling
and organics across the
country.
The only items able to be
recycled from home will be
plastic bottles, clear meat
trays and containers number 1,
2 and 5, food and drink tins and
cans, paper and cardboard, and
glass bottles and jars.
Christchurch residents will be
able to put empty pizza boxes
into the yellow recycling bin.
Tea bags, shredded paper,
serviettes, paper towels and
aerosol cans will need to go into
the red rubbish bin. All lids, soft
plastics and drink cartons must
continue to go in the red bin.
Collecting the same materials
through kerbside collections
will make it easier for everyone
to put items in the correct bin,
no matter where they are in New
Zealand.
Residents can still drop off
their recycling and hazardous
waste items for free at the
EcoDrop recycling centres,
as well as dispose of large
quantities of green waste or
refuse at the transfer stations.
“As usual, it’s important to
prepare your items for kerbside
collection,” says city council
manager resource recovery Dr
Alec McNeil.
“This means taking the lids
off any bottles or containers and
rinsing all items before placing
them in your recycling bin,
without bagging or squashing
them.
“Christchurch residents
are good at recycling, so it’s
important to keep it this way
and continue to put the right
items in the right bins.”
Temporary traffic changes at the
Ferry/Aldwins/Ensors intersection
We’re fixing sections of damaged stormwater drains
beneath Ferry Road and we’re replacing some
traffic signals.
To do this work safely there will be no right turns from
Ferry Road into Aldwins Road (coming from the east) and into
Ensors Road (coming from the west). Detours are in place.
All through traffic lanes on Ferry, Aldwins and Ensors roads
will be maintained at 30km/h.
The temporary traffic changes will be from 8 January until
early February.
Businesses are open as usual.
We know roads works are disruptive for you
