Moll’s Dolls take to the stage

Andrei Moore’s response to the 

start of a long-awaited repair. 

The works to remove a road 

shoulder and fix up potholes 

began on Monday and will go 

on until February 2, weather 

permitting. 

Road closures are to be 

expected and there will also be 

no on-street car parking 

while the construction is 

occurring. 

Said Moore: “While it 

is a slight inconvenience 

for about a week, the 

fixing of the road will be 

well worth it. 

“It has been needed 

as the road has been an 

absolute shocker for many 

years and the general vibe to 

these works is great. 

“A local resident once 

counted 450 individual 

repair patches along 

here, so it really is 

good to see this getting 

done. 

“The potholes are 

often unavoidable 

and I’ve been sent a 

number of photos of 

damaged vehicles over 

the years.”

SHUFFLE BALL change, time 

step, and buffalo are just a 

few of the most common tap 

dancing moves – ones which 

Molly Chapman knows very 

well. 

As the director and vice president 

of an all-female competitive 

tap-dancing team, Moll’s 

Dolls, Chapman, who teaches 

the team and competes alongside 

them, has been preparing 

for several months for the 35th 

New Zealand Masters Games. 

The event will take place in 

Dunedin from February 3-11, 

and the group of 35 to 70-yearolds 

will dance the nights away, 

competing against four teams 

in the formation dance and 

show dance categories of the 

dance-sport section. 

The group will also compete 

as duos, triples and quad teams 

in the under-50s and over-50s 

categories.

Chicken feet an 

unwelcome find 

WHAT 

A CASEBROOK couple feared 

their children or pets could 

have been poisoned after raw 

chicken feet painted with pink 

nail polish on the claws were 

thrown onto a Cavendish Rd 

property. 

The house was also egged 

earlier this month, but it was 

the unusually decorated chicken 

feet which concerned the adult 

occupants, who wished to 

remain anonymous. 

Although a common pet food 

for dogs, uncooked chicken 

feet can cause outbreaks of 

bacteria-related salmonella, 

campylobacter and listeria. 

“The nail polish can be toxic 

and we’ve got no idea what else 

could have been done to them,” 

said the mother-of-two. 

Her children are aged two and 

six, while there is also a cat in the 

household. 

“We had six (chicken feet) 

dotted across our front lawn. Our 

cat was trying to eat them, we 

had to get her away from them,” 

she said. 

“We also have young children 

on the property so they’re a 

potential danger to them as well.

“It was quite disturbing to us 

and it would have been just as 

disturbing to the children, had 

they seen them.” 

The chicken feet were found in 

the early hours of January 5, and 

it was not an isolated incident, 

leading the woman to believe 

local youth were emulating a 

social media trend. 

“Apparently there is some viral 

TikTok prank about this which 

originated in America,” she 

said. 

“Our best guess is someone 

is trying to replicate it here. It 

surprise me if there’s a video of it 

happening here as well.” 

The woman, who lodged 

a report with police and is 

awaiting the chicken feet to be 

taken away for analysis, posted 

her concerns on the Bishopdale/ 

Burnside/Casebrook Community 

Facebook page and soon learned 

other members had been 

targeted. 

Another Cavendish Rd resident 

found chicken feet crammed into 

a letterbox the same morning; a 

woman who lives on Casebrook’s 

Regents Park Drive found 

chicken feet on her car. 

Pizza boxes into 

recycling, aerosol 

cans into rubbish

From February 1, the 

Government is standardising 

what materials can be collected 

from households for recycling 

and organics across the 

country. 

The only items able to be 

recycled from home will be 

plastic bottles, clear meat 

trays and containers number 1, 

2 and 5, food and drink tins and 

cans, paper and cardboard, and 

glass bottles and jars. 

Christchurch residents will be 

able to put empty pizza boxes 

into the yellow recycling bin. 

Tea bags, shredded paper, 

serviettes, paper towels and 

aerosol cans will need to go into 

the red rubbish bin. All lids, soft 

plastics and drink cartons must 

continue to go in the red bin. 

Collecting the same materials 

through kerbside collections 

will make it easier for everyone 

to put items in the correct bin, 

no matter where they are in New 

Zealand.

“As usual, it’s important to 

prepare your items for kerbside 

collection,” says city council 

manager resource recovery Dr

rinsing all items before placing 

them in your recycling bin, 

without bagging or squashing 

them. 

“Christchurch residents 

are good at recycling, so it’s 

important to keep it this way 

and continue to put the right 

items in the right bins.”

Competing a ‘life highlight’ for dancers

Chapman, 65, said: “The 

masters is one of the only 

competitions where we get 

to showcase our talents and 

compete against other groups. 

We are really excited about 

competing as representatives of 

our local community. 

“We’re also a masters games 

award-winning team, having 

won gold, silver and bronze 

medals in the formation team 

and dance sport at the last four 

games.” 

The team has received a New 

Zealand Community Trust 

grant of $2000 to help with the 

running of two minivans and 

accommodation costs. 

Chapman donned her first pair 

of tap shoes when she was four 

and never looked back. Born 

and raised in Dunedin, she now 

lives in Bromley and has been 

teaching dance for more than 45 

years. 

She passed her love of dance 

onto her late daughter Nicola, 

who died six years ago, and her 

son Hayden, who graduated

Dramatic Academy in 2014 and 

is now a New York-based off-

“I love dancing, it has been a 

full family affair. It brings me so 

much joy and I believe it is never 

too late to learn how to dance,” 

Chapman said. 

“Moll’s Dolls is about being, 

dancing and competing together 

and enjoying yourself. We’re one 

of very few tap-dancing teams 

that actively compete . . . and we 

have an absolute blast.” 

The group was founded in 

2015 and came about when the 

mother of a young girl Chapman 

was teaching suggested setting 

up a class for adults, as well as 

preschoolers. 

It was while attending a masters 

games event with a softball 

team that Chapman became 

aware of the dance-sports category 

and soon after began setting 

up a competitive dance team. 

Team member and performer 

Julie Riker said Molls Doll’s was 

their “senior sports club” and 

provided an invaluable sense 

of community, happiness, and 

health. 

”Being able to dance with 

childhood friends some fifty 

years later and travel to the NZ 

Masters Games in Dunedin will 

be a life highlight for me.” 

COMPETE: Moll’s Dolls have won gold, 

silver and bronze medals at the past four 

Masters Games. 

The group offers classes for 

women of all skill levels at St 

John’s Church in Woolston, 

ranging from absolute beginners 

to seasoned tappers, and offers 

the opportunity to dance at 

corporate functions, community 

events, rest homes and other 

performances. 

Said Angela Yannakis, who 

is also a part of the performing 

team: “Moll’s Dolls are a funloving 

dance group with one 

thing in common – a passion for 

tap dancing.

to perform to a high standard but

McKenzie aims for Paralympics

MCKENZIE DRAGE is in 

the pool six days a week in 

preparation for the New Zealand 

championships in April, with 

a long-term goal of competing 

at the Los Angeles 2028 

Paralympics Games. 

The 19-year-old was born with 

Apert syndrome, but it has never 

stopped her from pursuing her 

dreams. 

“I am very determined and like 

to face challenges with a positive 

mindset,” she said. 

Apert syndrome causes fusion 

of bones in the fingers, toes, and 

head and neck. Various surgeries 

were needed during Drage’s infancy 

and childhood to improve 

her quality of life. 

“School and social life have 

been a challenge but I’ve never 

let my disability hold me back 

from setting goals and achieving 

them,” she said. 

When swimming, Apert 

syndrome mainly affects Drage’s 

range of movement as she cannot 

fully extend her arms, neck or 

shoulders. 

“I have limited reach and kicking 

ability, but I follow a daily 

stretching programme to try and 

develop my flexibility.” 

Drage works part time as 

a lifeguard at Jellie Park. She 

attended Hagley College until 

graduating last year and lives on 

the family farm near McQueens

“I’ve learned how to get jobs 

done and be organised with my

The family owns 80 free range 

chickens, and Drage is partly 

responsible for selling their 

eggs to customers in Christchurch. 

She has always enjoyed swimming 

and started competing in 

year 11. 

“Being able to swim well helps 

me feel confident in any water. 

I really like the discipline of 

training hard and feeling fit and 

healthy.” 

Drage is part of the Aquagym 

Swim Club where she is coached 

by Emma Smith. 

In September, she represented 

New Zealand for the first time at 

the Oceania tri series swimming 

‘Everyone has differences and strengths, and life is about 

making the most of what you have’ – McKenzie Drage 

championships in Hastings. 

She won the 100m individual 

medley, achieving a personal 

best of 1min 52.4sec. 

“I feel really satisfied when I 

get a personal best time in a race 

I have been focusing on,” she 

said. 

“They don’t come easy though, 

there’s a lot of hard work and 

sometimes you get disappointed 

when you don’t make a time.”

Hilux overhaul results in a more supple drive 

TOYOTA IS looking to rival the 

top selling new Ford Ranger with 

some upgrades to its current 

Hilux, launched in 2015. 

With an all-new replacement 

still 18 months away this 

version is feeling the sales heat 

from a bevy of newer rivals. 

The reputation that surrounds 

the Hilux brand and the loyal 

customer base will help it in 

the sales scrap. However, that 

will only go so far, and Toyota 

Motoring with Bob Nettleton 

has responded with some 

worthwhile changes to its 

flagship Hilux 4WD SR5 

Cruiser. 

The major talking point is the 

upgraded suspension and wider 

track, with increases of around 

140mm front and rear. One thing 

you notice almost immediately 

is the substantial 20mm increase 

in rise height to around 250mm. 

This should be plenty for 

more adventurous owners to 

comfortably navigate 

even the trickiest 

cross-country 

terrain.

the track increase,

overhauled the 

suspension, with 

the Hilux sporting a 

rear stabilizer bar for

Ample power is provided 

by Toyota’s super dependable 

150kW 2.8-litre turbo-diesel. 

There’s an abundance of low 

speed pulling power with 

500Nm more torque than the 

motor it replaced three years 

ago. On the open road, the 

engine is strong and effortless in 

everything it does. 

In low speed town driving, 

I felt noise levels were overly 

intrusive for a premium ute. 

The motor revels in off-road 

terrain with plenty of throttle 

response and pulling power. 

The six-speed automatic is an 

oldie but definitely a goodie and 

perfectly paired to the motor – 

and it should be, as they’ve been 

working as a top-notch gear 

changing combo for eight years. 

Thanks to the wide body 

enhancements the double cab 

feels bigger and more generously 

provisioned than before. It’s 

loaded with car-like features 

such as a driver seat height 

adjustment, and there is a 

telescopic and height adjustable 

steering column. The steering 

wheel houses multi-media and 

phone controls with Bluetooth 

capability. The touchscreen has 

been upgraded and the audio 

system now includes Apple 

CarPlay® and Android AutoTM. 

The premium ute push 

continues with niceties such 

as push button engine start, 

carpeted cabin, satellite 

navigation, LED daytime 

running lights and chrome 

exterior door handles. Standard 

features include a 9-speaker 

audio system, 18-inch alloys, 

leather seating, full-size alloy 

spare wheel and a driver seats 

with 8-way power adjustments.

ingredients, and consequently 

is off the class-leading ride 

and handling pace set by the 

excellent Ford Ranger.
