Woodwardia unigemmataGardenunderneath being a very dark crimson.Betula utilis ‘Jim Russell’. This cultivarcomes from the Arboretum Wespelaarin Belgium and originates from seedscollected in China by one Jim Russell,described as a ‘horticultural grandee’,and one time curator of the CastleHoward Arboretum (now known asthe Yorkshire Arboretum). His lifestory is well worth reading. It was at alater stage of his life that he started onhis world travels in earnest, collectingboth plants and seeds from China,Japan, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.This spectacular tree has a dark peelingbark which reveals an inner layer ofburnished coppery colours combinedwith red and purple tones. I think thismight have to be No.1 on the evergrowing list of a few favourite things.To my mind there is nothing to beat anative spindle or euonymus for both itsautumn colour and its fabulous fruits.The fruits can be pink, red or whitebut what is so stunning is that the seedinside is covered with an orange coatingknown as the aril, which contrasts sospectacularly with the fruits. The arilprovides a feast for birds who digest itand then spread the seeds around, ifyou are very lucky. And it seems thatrobins guard euonymus very fiercelyonce they’ve claimed it as their own,seeing off all comers. To be honest,any spindle could join the list but Ithink that Euonymus hamiltonianussubsp. sieboldianus ‘Coral Charm’rates highly, with its combination ofcoral pink fruits and an orange-redseed. This shrub varies too in that itsautumn colour is a soft lemony yellow.Every late summer I see cloudsof Japanese anemones in otherpeople’s front gardens and each yearI think how beautiful they are. Thismust be the year to find a plant ofeither the glorious pure white A xhybrida ‘Honorine Jobert’ or perhapsthe reliable and free flowering A xhybrida ‘September Charm’. Perfectfor both full sun and partial shade,this particular anemone has flowerswhose outer petals are purple tinted,contrasting with the pale pink of theinner petals. They float around on tallwiry stems bringing movement to thelate summer border. Another cultivarI might squeeze onto my list would beA. hupehensis ‘Hadspen Abundance’.And finally, I was reading about HelenDillon’s move from her famous gardenin Dublin back in 2016 and about theplants she would be leaving behind plusthe ones she would be taking. Of courseshe had so many rich and rare plantsbut I was glad to hear that she wouldbe taking what she calls the ‘superblarge fern’, Woodwardia unigemmataor Jewelled Chain Fern. We boughtthis gem at one of Great Dixter’s PlantFairs a few years ago and I have it in alarge pot outside my porch. Thankfullyit is hardy down to -10°C. Its archingstems can reach up to seven feet inlength (but not in a pot), and when thefrond rests on the soil the single bulbilon its tip takes root. Oh, and the newfronds are a ‘gorgeous brick red’.
