At Somerhill, the pandemicconfirmed our existing approach – toteach engineering to our pupils atthe earliest opportunity. In 2019, webecame the second school in the UK tooffer the subject to all pupils from Year3 (age 7) to Year 8 (age 13). Our pupilshave an hour of dedicated engineeringteaching every week, offering themsignificantly more than a typical designand technology (DT) curriculum.We are proud to be taking thepath less travelled by championingSTEM education. Not only is thisarea of learning incredibly beneficialto children’s all-round development, italso provides them with skills whichmay help tackle global challenges andopen up possibilities in their futureworking lives, regardless of gender.Women are still underrepresented inthese career fields and we want to helpour young girls recognise their potentialto become the engineers the world islooking for.So how do we teach engineering tosuch young pupils? The short answerto this question is: we don’t – notin the traditional sense of teachingfacts. Instead, we teach the skills thatengineers need, equipping our pupilswith practical, hands-on constructionand design skills. Through a creativeproblem-based curriculum, pupils worktogether to find solutions to challenges.With technology being omnipresentin society, we are moving away fromthe need to retain knowledge and reciteformulae. More important is the abilitySince launching the engineeringcurriculum, it has continuallyevolved. Children are undertakingmore complex digital and physicalprojects such as creating digital escaperooms and learning about flightthrough the construction of gliders,as well as building Formula 1 carsand electric go-carts. Facilitating ourprogramme are our three state-of-theartscience and engineering labs. Weremain forward-thinking, exploringadvancements like augmented reality(AR) and virtual reality to enhance ourteaching methods. An exciting range ofSTEM clubs are also available to pupilsso that they can continue their learningin activities outside the classroom.“...pupils work together tofind solutions to challenges”By learning engineering in aproblem-based way, our pupils areempowered to overcome challenges,fostering a sense of accomplishmentas they complete tasks.
