The Priceless Education SupplementPerformancePowerEastbourne College and Bede’sSchool discuss opportunities whichgive their students time to shineistockphoto.com/ vectorplusbDirector of Music at EastbourneCollege, Dan Jordan, sings thepraises of music at the school. It is 6.30pm, the night before a wellneededhalf-term holiday. 650 singers arepreparing to hit the stage and belt outtheir house songs in Eastbourne College’sannual House Singing Competition. Afterten classic numbers, the staff band play andthen the judge tackles the unenviable taskof determining the winners; a girls’ house, with a sparky rendition of Abba’s ‘SuperTrouper’ scoops the top prize. However, the competitive element is not the be-alland end-all (although the housemasters andpupils may disagree!), the overriding purposeof the event is to provide the pupils with anopportunity to sing with friends, performin front of others and ultimately enjoy afun way for the school community to cometogether and celebrate the power of music. The wide ranging benefits of music, and singing in particular, have long beenrecognised by doctors, scientists andpsychologists. From boosting wellbeing andcognitive functioning, to helping developcollaborative and inter-personal skills andincreasing self-confidence, the list is fairlyextensive. There is also evidence to suggestthat children who are involved in some formof musical study achieve better academicoutcomes than those who aren’t.Pupils here are indeed fortunate to benefitfrom a myriad of musical and creativeexperiences with its first-class facilities.Performance opportunities abound, thereis something for everyone, from elite levelto fortnightly singing practice for all pupils.“Smiling, having fun, feeling like a numberone”. How serendipitous Abba’s lyricsseem and how applicable a mantra for ourstudents at Eastbourne College.Find out more at eastbourne-college.co.uk“From cricketand horse ridingto sailing andyoga - there isa physicalactivity suitablefor every pupil”“The wide rangingbenefits of music, and singingin particular, have long beenrecognisedby doctors, scientists andpsychologists”Bede’s School tells us aboutthe amazing performanceopportunities that they offer.Bede’s is renowned for its comprehensivecurriculum which extends beyond theclassroom.
