How do you define digital transformation? Digital transformation in the context of the mining industry involves leveraging digital technologies to optimise and streamline various aspects of mining operations, leading to improved efficiency, productivity, safety and sustainability. What does SmartOps Solutions do that sets it apart? SmartOps holds the conviction that technology and systems should be instrumental in driving behavioural changes to maximise the benefits derived from their implementation. We prioritise this objective through robust change-management processes, ensuring swift adoption and realisation of value and return on investment (ROI) within less than five months. Our approach is focused on practical digital solutions intertwined with behavioural change mechanisms that deliver tangible value, eschewing the adoption of technology merely for its novelty. We dedicate time to comprehensively understand your mining operations, allowing us to craft a tailored, fit-for-purpose digital transformation strategy and implementation process. How was the company formed? Established in 2015 by Mahene Patrice Benzane, the company aims to tackle the challenges faced by the mining industry in effective change management and the adoption of technologies. The company also saw a need for implementation of technologydriven Management Operating Systems for better coordination of work at mines to ensure predictability of production every single day. Many mining companies invest substantial amounts in implementing various technologies, only to fall short of realising the intended ROI. SmartOps was founded to also bridge this gap by offering robust change-management solutions. Our goal was and still is to facilitate the seamless adoption of various technologies within mining operations without imposing excessive financial burdens on the companies involved. We have since diversified into different offerings. In which sectors do you focus? Mining, oil and gas, logistics, e-hailing and energy. What do you offer mining companies that makes a difference to their operations? Practical digital-transformation strategies, worker-enablement technologies, management consulting (business optimisation) and energy management. What is your geographical footprint? We operate mainly in South Africa with offices in Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga. We also have presence in Australia and New Zealand. Are you looking at other markets? I recently attended the Future Minerals Forum in Saudi Arabia where we were looking for collaborative partnerships. It was important to be part of the discussion about green minerals, which is the direction the world is taking. We are working on expanding to various regions in Africa and abroad, and we are seeking for like-minded individuals to collaborate with in different regions. Where is your business growing? The Management Consulting division for business optimisation and Digital Transformation in the technology space are growing quickly, together with Energy Management. We offer collective reporting, which brings information together from various sources to one platform. They can see where most energy consumption is coming from and put initiatives in place to save energy. It is about finding ways of reducing the carbon footprint of an organisation through reporting and managing reduction initiatives. Please give an example of a successful project. A recent project was a notable achievement. We successfully implemented a comprehensive Management Operating System for a mine, improving planning, coordination of work across all sections and establishing accountability. We seamlessly integrated this system with our technology to promote sustainability and increased output by over 25%.
