Residents explore
rerouting Coastal Pathway

COMMUNITY interest in an
alternate route for the Coastal
Pathway is growing.
The pathway currently diverges
from the shoreline near
the Beachville Rd and Main
Rd corner and runs along the
Redcliffs shopping area to avoid
private property.
It functions as a shared footpath
and cycleway along Main
Rd.
Increasing safety, by creating
an alternate route from the
Main Rd footpath, is a focus for
advocates on the Reroute Coastal
Pathway Facebook group.
The group proposes an “Estuary
Edge” route, which would
“avoid the danger of people
stepping out from shops into
the path of cyclists”.
More than 300 people have
joined the group since it was
created last week.
A different group, the Coastal
Access Group, has also formed
with the goal of researching
what rights the public and private
landowners on Beachville
Rd and Main Rd have to the

“Our goal is really purely
to finally get some legal
clarification and to work
with council,” said group
spokesperson, Pete Franklin.
He said his group has no position
on whether an alternate
route should be created.
The access group is not
affiliated with the Christchurch
Coastal Pathway Group, which
originally advocated for the
pathway.
“We’re trying to take a very
bipartisan approach to this. It’s
really trying to be respectful to
those property
owners and
respectful to
the community
who believe
they are stakeholders
in that
strip of land,”
said Franklin.
His group
wants to
work with the city council
to determine if creating an

Musicians unite to save community shed

struck a chord with the singer
songwriter.
One weekend before the
Covid-19 pandemic took hold,
Tulk, the lead instructor at the
Little River Jiu-Jitsu Club, was
doing work inside the building
the club had purchased in 2018.
Once Luck learned about
the voluntary work Tulk was
doing, the legendary Exponents
front man suggested a concert
to fundraise for the building’s
renovation.
“I was working on the floor
when Jordan stuck his nose in,”
said Tulk.
“We got chatting to work out
how to raise some funds and
Jordan said ‘let’s do a concert’.”
Their plan finally comes to
fruition on Saturday when the
Jordan Luck Band headlines the
first Little River Music Festival
in a decade. It will be staged
on Peter and Tracey Wright’s
Western Valley Rd property.
Luck’s support acts include
Christchurch musicians Al
Park and his band, plus Adam
Hattaway and the Haunters, and
recently reformed Little River
four piece, The Western Valley
Road Band.

a voluntary basis for the event,
which dovetails with the jiu-jitsu
club’s 10th anniversary.
The intention is for the
corrugated iron construction
on Barclays Rd – which has not
officially been used due to its
condition – to be restored so its
members and other community
initiatives can utilise it.
“It’s effectively laid dormant,”
Tulk said.
Currently the martial arts club
uses the town’s community hall
on Thursdays.
Tulk estimated the complete
restoration project, including the
addition of a mezzanine floor,
would cost about $300,000.
“About $150,000 would be a
minimum to make it serviceable,
I reckon we’d need double that
to actually make it something
that’ll last a long time,” he said.
Tulk said the goal is for
kick boxing, yoga, pilates and
gymnastics to also call the shed
home once it is spruced up.
“It’s a community shed. It’s
about the community this whole
project,” he said.
“There’s a lady who wants to
set up a weights gym – she’s got
all the gear so we’ve got space for
that.
“It can be done, but it’s a
mission. Anyone in their right
mind would go ‘bulldoze it’, but
there’s a lot of history there.”
The shed was established by
a power pole manufacturing
business due to the plot’s
proximity to a saw mill, and later
became the town’s fire station
until the new headquarters was
built in 1982.
A recycling facility was then
operated out of the building,
before it became a joinery
workshop.

manager Jacob Bradbury
said there are currently
no plans to develop the
proposed route and no
work has been done to
investigate its viability.
“Other estuary front
projects have had significant
challenges, particularly related to
consents and constructability,”
he said.
“When the Coastal Pathway
was first endorsed back in 2013

property ownership issues meant
this option was ruled out.”
The pathway cost $17.3 million
to construct.
In an effort to address the
safety concerns on Main Rd,
Bradbury said additional
markings at the street’s corner
have already been painted
informing cyclists of a slow zone.
In December, there were calls
for cyclists using the pathway to
slow down and recognise it was a
shared space.
Teenager sells plant collection before uni

PLANTS ARE a passion for Mt
Pleasant teen Grace Rotherham,
but she has to sell most of her
collection before heading off to
university.
The 18-year-old started her
small business selling plants at
a Kaiapoi market in December,
however she has been interested
in the hobby since she was 10 and
got her first house plant.
“One day I got a house plant
and I just started loving it. People
who knew me, knew I liked house
plants so I ended up with quite a
lot of them.”
Rotherham has a range of more
than 50 house plants, succulents
and cactuses.
“I just love watching them
grow. When you look at it and
realise how much its grown over
a long period of time, it’s quite
rewarding.”
Learning how to propagate new
plants from her existing set has
caused the collection to grow.
Rotherham wants most of her
collection sold before she travels
to study architecture at Victoria
University of Wellington in
February.
“I want to get rid of them so my
family doesn’t have to take care
of them.”
Shortly after Christmas, she
started the Grace’s Little Greenhouse
Facebook page to help sell
her collection.
Most of the purchases are
picked up from Rotherham’s
home, but she does charge $5
deliveries for locals.
“It’s probably a bit of a discount
from what you’d find in a store.”

THE LODGE of Unanimity
Sumner No 3 is a part of
Christchurch’s history. It dates
back to some of the earliest
European settlements in
Canterbury, the initial Lodge of
Unanimity having been formed
in Lyttelton in 1851. However,
this society isn’t just a preserved
piece of history, but a living part
of the city.
The history of the lodge is an
important feature. Some observant
readers may have noticed
the difference when I referred to
the Lodge of Unanimity and the
Lodge of Unanimity Sumner. This
was not just lazy writing on my
part. The Lodge of Unanimity
Sumner is the end result of the
members of two lodges, both with
significant individual history,
coming together to become a
single group. I mentioned that
Unanimity was formed in 1851,
and the Sumner lodge, which was
initially sponsored by the Lodge of
Unanimity, was formed in 1921.
The early days of Unanimity
show a number of particularly
active and interesting people
among its membership. These
include the first surgeon in
Canterbury, Dr William Donald,
the famed Christchurch
architect Benjamin Mountfort,
the less well known but equally
impressive John Marshman, and
Augustus Alport, who ran the
Canterbury society store. Also
the surveyor Thomas Cass, for
whom Cass Bay is named, and
the youngest-ever New Zealand
member of Parliament, James
Stuart-Wortley, who became an
MP at aged 20, before he was
technically allowed to vote.
The lodge itself was a visible
part of Lyttelton society for
years, as can only be expected
from the South Island’s first formally
established masonic lodge.
The first lodge met in the rooms
above Augustus Alport’s store,
which hosted everything from
church services to committee
meetings.
The establishment of the first
dedicated Unanimity lodge
building in Lyttelton was a
matter of great public spectacle
and the details of everything
from the ceremony and the Masonic
procession, which marched
through the streets of Lyttelton
in full fancy masonic attire, to
the social event that followed,
was well reported in The Lyttelton
Times.
The Sumner lodge was similarly
a significant part of its local
community and was largely built
by the volunteer labour of its
membership. In the earliest minutes
of the Sumner lodge there
is a list of those members who
were donating either their time,
resources, expertise or other
contributions.
This document noted “often
during the week the brethren
were found to be working, some
would be found on the job after
their day’s work, and would stay
as long as daylight permitted.
There was not a single Saturday
afternoon without some enthusiastic
members being there.”
The construction was truly a
community project in the full
spirit of freemasonry.
The current lodge building at
Ferrymead Heritage Park is in
fact the original Sumner lodge,
moved out of its old Sumner
location before the earthquakes.
This was a particularly lucky
move as the old site of the
building did not fare well in the
earthquake and if this move
had not been made the building
would likely have been lost.
The Unanimity building did
not fare as well, and while an
original Mountfort building, the
cost of earthquake repairs were
more than the lodge could bear.
After the earthquakes the
members moved in with Sumner
in Ferrymead before the two
lodges eventually combined their
membership under the name of
the Lodge of Unanimity Sumner.
Freemasonry is a profoundly
social organisation and one in
which members are encouraged
to be the best people they can be.

60th year, The Canterbury
Masonic Charitable Trust
committed $60,000 to the
Air Rescue Trust to support
annual training costs for
helicopter rescue pilots on
Instrument Flight Rules.
IFR allows pilots to fly
in low visibility, such as in
fog or low light. The ability
to perform in challenging
terrain and conditions is
central to the crew’s effectiveness
in responding to
emergency situations. All
rescue pilots must undergo
annual training and checks,
and the significant donation
helps to support this service.
Over the past nine years,
the trust has funded the Freemasons
Christchurch nursing
scholarship, for applicants
undertaking the Bachelor of
Nursing at Ara Te Pūkenga.
Other recent recipients
of charitable grants from
CMCT include NZ Spinal
Trust, Gilberthorpe School,
Seabrook MacKenzie,
Christchurch Land Search
and Rescue, and Graeme
Dingle Foundation.
By raising funds from car
parking near the Hagley
Netball Courts during winter,
plus donations, CMCT
raised enough to purchase
all the netball goal posts for
the new indoor Canterbury
Netball Centre at Ngā Puna
Wai.

exhibition in Diamond Harbour.
Best known for his blues music career,
Davidson is also passionate about art.
After his art residency at Stoddart
Cottage in May last year he painted
landscapes of the local area extensively.
The exhibition, Eyes for the Hills,
promises to deliver on the colours and
moods of dusk, shadow, evening light,
tinfoil, indian ink and aquathane.
The exhibition runs from February 2 to
25 from 10am to 4pm Friday-Sunday.

Davidson’s landscapes aim to be locally
specific to the Port Hills yet also regionally
abstract.
Davidson has a background in visual
arts, with experience working in oils,
printmaking and design. He has exhibited
in solo shows around New Zealand, and in
Melbourne and Switzerland.
As an artist-in-residence at Massey
University in 2022, Delaney presented two
exhibitions and a nationwide campaign
in collaboration with artist and activisit
Tame Iti.
AN EARLY learning centre in Redcliffs is
seeking to source cleaner energy in a step
to align with its sustainability goals.
Moa Kids, in Barnett Park, has started
fundraising to purchase solar panels
which will not only be a renewable energy
source for the centre, but also a tool to
teach children about solar energy.
“It makes complete sense to fundraise
for solar panels,” said centre manager
Hayley Flanagan.
“We operate during the day, so we could
generate the power we need and save on
electricity costs, while having something
educational to engage the children with
reflective of our sustainability values.”
Among their fundraising efforts, the
not-for-profit preschool has organised an
adults’ quiz night at Te Raekura Redcliffs
School. The night, aptly named The Power
Quiz, will take place on Saturday, February
17 and will be hosted by comedian Ray
Shipley.
Flanagan said the night will feature
cameos from well-known locals, spot prizes
and a silent auction.
“The quiz is a chance for residents to test
their general and local knowledge in a fun
start to the year, all the while supporting a
worthwhile cause,” she said.
“The Moa Kids fundraising subcommittee
encourages locals to assemble a
team, purchase tickets and come along to
a festive, social evening in support of the
fundraising goal.”
Doors open at 6.30pm and the quiz runs
from 7-9pm with a short break. Food and
drinks will be available for purchase, and
tickets cost $20, plus booking fees.
