From the
EDITOR
Welcome to the first edition of CosBeauty Magazine for 2024! Last year, the
beauty industry played a significant role towards diversifying traditional
beauty standards – fuelled by the growing demand for authentic
representation in the beauty landscape – and I’m hopeful we see more
advancements in the coming year.
In our ever-connected global society, the concept of ‘what is beautiful’ is shifting,
and beauty standards are evolving and diversifying. As aesthetic ideals continue to
differ across ethnic and cultural groups, ethnocultural awareness in the realm of
cosmetic surgery becomes even more important. On page 48 we report on a recent
research paper that unravels the diverse preferences that have emerged in different
societies and how they are shaping contemporary cosmetic surgery practices. The
results are fascinating!
As the temperature will slowly begin to fall in Australia over the next few months,
it’s a good time to take stock of your skincare inventory. Vitamin C has long reigned
supreme to help get your skin back on track after a long summer. On page 24, we look
more closely at the myriad skin benefits of this potent antioxidant and how it can
stimulate collagen production and help improve the look of hyperpigmentation.
For the makeup lovers amongst us, you won’t want to miss our guide to nailing
the ballet-core makeup look (page 60) – a captivating trend that doesn’t appear to be
going any time soon. We also chat with Nica Marcello, national education manager at
Revlon, on how to choose and apply foundation like an expert (page 76).
Our Valentine’s gifts on page 42 will keep you in Cupid’s favour for another year,
plus we share the surprising history of Valentine’s Day (spoiler alert: it’s not all red
roses and Hallmark cards).
As always, we trust you will enjoy perusing the pages of CosBeauty Magazine and
hope it can inspire you to live authentically and love the skin you’re in.
VitaminC
your
ticket to
radiant
skin
READY TO SAY GOODBYE
TO DULL, LACKLUSTRE SKIN
AFTER A LONG HOT SUMMER?
GET YOUR SKIN BACK ON TRACK
WITH THE TRANSFORMATIVE
POWER OF VITAMIN C.
Radiant, healthy skin is a beauty
aspiration that knows no bounds. In
the quest for a flawless complexion,
one ingredient stands out among the
rest: Vitamin C. With its ability to promote
collagen synthesis, help to shield the skin
from environmental damage and combat
hyperpigmentation, Vitamin C has, quite
rightly, become a skincare superhero.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 25

BEAUTY
Why is Vitamin C important
for healthy skin?
Vitamin C plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy
skin in several ways. It is a key player in collagen
synthesis, the process by which the body produces
new collagen fibres that give the skin its firmness
and elasticity. As we age, collagen synthesis slows
down, leading to the development of fine lines,
wrinkles and other signs of ageing. Vitamin C helps
to boost collagen synthesis, promoting firmer, more
youthful-looking skin.
Perhaps even more importantly, Vitamin C is a
potent antioxidant that helps to protect against
environmental stressors such as pollution and UV
radiation. These stressors can cause free radical
damage, leading to inflammation, premature ageing
and skin cancer.
L-ascorbic
acid: the gold
standard of
Vitamin C
When it comes to Vitamin C in skincare,
L-ascorbic acid reigns supreme. This potent
form of Vitamin C is highly effective in helping
to stimulate collagen production, reduce the
look of fine lines and wrinkles and minimising
the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Concentration
matters
The concentration of Vitamin C in skincare products
is a crucial factor to consider. Higher concentrations
of Vitamin C generally provide more pronounced
results. However, if you have sensitive skin or are
new to Vitamin C, it's advisable to start with a lower
concentration, around 10%. Gradually increase the
concentration as your skin builds tolerance.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 27

BEAUTY
Stability &
formulation
Vitamin C is a highly reactive molecule and can rapidly
degrade when exposed to air, light and heat. To ensure
the product's stability and efficacy, look for products
that utilise advanced delivery systems. A promising new
approach is nano-encapsulation. Nano-formulations of
Vitamin C help to protect the compound, enhancing
its stability and preventing degradation. These nanoencapsulated
forms have shown improved chemical
stability and have been explored for their therapeutic
applications.
Liposomal delivery systems are also utilised to
maintain the stability and efficacy of Vitamin C.
Liposomes are lipid-based vesicles that can encapsulate
Vitamin C, protecting it from oxidation and degradation.
This delivery system helps to enhance the absorption
and bioavailability of Vitamin C.
In addition to nano-encapsulation and liposomal
delivery, other advanced techniques include
microencapsulation and polymer-based delivery
systems. Additionally, packaging plays a crucial role in
maintaining stability. Choose products that are packaged
in opaque containers to protect the formulation from
light and air exposure, extending their shelf life and
preserving their potency.

Supporting
ingredients
Vitamin C is a potent ingredient on its own,
but combining it with complementary skincare
ingredients can amplify its benefits. Look for
Vitamin C skincare products that contain additional
antioxidants like Vitamin E and ferulic acid. These
ingredients work synergistically with Vitamin C
to enhance its effectiveness, boost antioxidant
protection, and provide a more comprehensive
anti-ageing and brightening effect. Niacinamide,
hyaluronic acid and peptides are other ingredients
that can complement Vitamin C and further enhance
its benefits for your skin.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 29

Types of
Vitamin C
BEAUTY
skincare
products
Serums
Vitamin C serums are a popular choice when
it comes to skincare, as they typically contain
high concentrations of active ingredients that
penetrate deeply into the skin. These serums
are ideal for targeting specific concerns such as
hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.
Oils
TRY
As opposed to serums, which are
usually water-based, Vitamin C oils are,
well, oil-based. They typically provide
more hydration and nourishment
to the skin but may take longer to
be absorbed. The choice between
a Vitamin C serum or oil is usually a
matter of personal preference.
L-ascorbic acid, the purest form of Vitamin
C, is more stable in powder form. Vitamin
C powder products are meant to be
mixed in with a “carrier” product, such as
your daily serum or moisturiser. Since the
ingredients are not already suspended in
liquid, it's stable for longer and doesn’t
degrade as easily.
BEAUTY
Moisturisers
& creams
Vitamin C moisturisers offer a great
option if you’re looking for overall skin
renewal and hydration, as they provide a
more gradual release of active ingredients
over time. These moisturisers are
often formulated with other nourishing
ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and
Vitamin E, which work together with
Vitamin C to help restore and protect
the skin.
ONE OF SKINCARE’S BIG
NON-NEGOTIABLES: THE
DAY CREAM.
Day creams are an essential component of a
comprehensive skincare regimen. One of the
primary benefits of using a day cream is its
ability to provide long-lasting hydration. Moisturising
ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides and
alpha hydroxy acids, help to lock in your skin’s natural
moisture, reducing the risk of dehydration throughout
the day. This hydration boost can help keep common skin
issues at bay, such as dryness, dullness and tightness.
As a bonus, day creams often contain ingredients
that protect the skin against environmental aggressors,
such as pollution and harmful UV rays. This extra layer
of defence, in addition to a separate sunscreen as the
last step in your skincare regimen, helps to protect
against skin cancer and maintain your skin’s elasticity and
firmness, helping to ward off the formation of fine lines,
wrinkles and pigmentation.

Q&A with
GLOBAL EDUCATION
TECHNICAL TRAINING MANAGER,
ULTRACEUTICALS
WHAT SHOULD WE BE LOOKING FOR
WHEN CHOOSING A DAY CREAM?
A day cream’s primary function is to support and restore
the skin’s barrier function. Ingredients should infuse the
skin with moisture, nourish it with the appropriate lipids
and help to retain the moisture levels in the skin. It is also
beneficial for your day cream to contain supplementary
ingredients targeted to address skin concerns such as
uneven tone and redness.
Choosing the right day cream for your particular skin
type and condition is important. A day cream too harsh
can strip and imbalance your skin’s microbiome, which
can lead to irritation and increased sensitivity. Similarly, a
product too rich can cause breakouts. A product not rich
enough can lead to dryness. Get advice from your clinician
because when you use the right day product your skin
really shows the benefit.
SHOULD YOU USE A SERUM UNDER
YOUR DAY CREAM IN THE MORNING?
Yes, serums should be used under your day cream and
after applying your eye cream for greatest skin benefits.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 39

BEAUTY
IS IT IMPORTANT THAT YOUR DAY
CREAM CONTAINS SPF?
Broad-spectrum sunblock 50+ is essential for use
every day. If your day skincare contains one then it
is an extra bonus. A separate sunscreen should be
applied over the top of your moisturiser and serum.
WHAT ULTRACEUTICALS PRODUCTS
DO YOU SUGGEST FOR USE DURING
THE DAY?
It will vary from person to person, but generally
a cleanser is the first step. Ultraceuticals has six
to choose from, offering benefits for each skin
type and concern. Next, an eye cream should be
applied, followed by a corrector such as a Vitamin C
product. Vitamin C products have a double duty as
they also support your sunscreen and make it more
effective. Follow this with a moisturiser / day cream–
for oily skin, opt for a moisturising lotion over a
cream. The final steps are to apply a skin protector,
such as Ultraceuticals Protective Antioxidant
Complex, and broad-spectrum sunscreen such as
Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 50.
SHOULD YOU CHANGE YOUR
DAY CREAM ACCORDING TO THE
SEASONS?
Most skins change with varying weather conditions
so it is important to adjust your skincare according
to the changing needs of your skin. Generally, in the
cooler weather you need to step up the hydration
levels of your moisturiser, perhaps a product that
contains more lipids to support the lipid bio-layer
of your skin. You may also need a moisture booster
during this time to help ensure you retain optimum
skin moisture. Ultraceuticals B2 Hydrating Mask is a
favourite hydration booster.
day cream. Of course, even tiny tots should use
sunscreen as part of daily skincare. CBM
Valentine’s
Day

THERE IS A RICH AND FASCINATING HISTORY BEHIND
VALENTINE’S DAY THAT GOES FAR BEYOND THE REALM OF
HALLMARK CARDS AND RED ROSES.
Most of us think Valentine’s Day
is one of those commercialised
“Hallmark Card holidays” we
inherited from the USA. But
if you delve beneath the stemmed roses
and chocolate hearts, you’ll discover a
fascinating history of sacrifice, martyrdom,
love and resilience that extend far beyond the
constraints of modern consumerism.
Valentine’s Day proper, on 14 February, is
said to come from a very sad beginning. The
tale of Valentine’s Day intertwines with the
reign of Roman Emperor Claudius II, who, in
his relentless pursuit of power, inadvertently
became connected to the martyrdom of two
men named Valentine.
In the 3rd century, amidst a never-ending
barrage of military conflicts, Emperor Claudius
II sought to expand his armies. He believed that
single men made better soldiers, as they had
no family commitments that could divert their
loyalty, and enacted a law prohibiting young
men from getting married
A priest named Valentinus, later known as
Saint Valentine of Rome, defied the decrees
of the emporer. Recognising the significance
www.cosbeauty.com.au 43

FEATURE
of love, Valentinus believed that marriage was
a sacred bond essential to the wellbeing of
society. He continued to perform marriage
ceremonies for young couples in secret, going
against the emperor’s orders.
Valentinus was ultimately executed on
February 14, in the year 269 or 270, becoming
the first revered figure associated with
Valentine’s Day.
Another person named Valentine, a bishop
from Terni, Italy, was arrested for his Christian
beliefs under Claudius II’s reign. While awaiting
his execution, he is said to have performed
miracles and help heal the sick. Despite these
acts of compassion, Valentine was condemned
to death, and he met his fate on February 14th,
in the year 273.
In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius formally declared
the 14th February to be St Valentine’s Day, a
holiday to honour the martyred Valentine(s).
The remembrance of their sacrifice gradually
transformed into a celebration centered
around expressing affection, both romantic and
platonic, to loved ones.
As centuries passed, Valentine’s Day evolved
and absorbed various customs and traditions.
In the Middle Ages, written expressions of love
in the form of valentine letters became popular,
setting the stage for the exchange of “love
notes” that we recognise today.

WHY DO WE GIVE RED ROSES ON VALENTINE’S DAY?
In ancient Roman mythology, the red rose was linked to Venus, the goddess of love. The
Romans celebrated a festival called Lupercalia, which took place in mid-February and was
dedicated to fertility and the coming of spring. It is believed that during this festival, young
men would draw the names of young women from a jar, and they would be paired up as
partners for the duration of the festival. This custom eventually evolved into a practice of
exchanging love notes and tokens of affection, including red roses, on February 14th, the
feast day of St Valentine.
The association between St Valentine and red roses further solidified during the Victorian
era. In Victorian society, expressing emotions and feelings was often done through nonverbal
means, including the language of flowers. Red roses came to symbolise deep love and
passion, making them a popular choice for love declarations and romantic gestures.
Of course, in the modern world, we have moved on from exclusively gifting red roses to
our loved ones on Valentine’s Day. In Australia, where it’s usually very warm in February,
beauty gifts are now fast replacing the red rose, mainly for practical reasons – fragrance and
lipstick long outlast fresh flowers.
THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT
VARIATIONS IN BEAUTY
PERCEPTIONS DEPENDING
ON THE COUNTRY,
ETHNIC BACKGROUND
www.cosbeauty.com.au 49

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
There is increasing demand for cosmetic
surgery across the world, spanning
different cultures and ethnicities – and
long-held Western beauty ideals are now
being turned on their heads.
A recent review paper* examined how
Western beauty standards no longer
apply to all and may not yield satisfactory
cosmetic surgical outcomes for non-
Western ethnicities. The 2023 article,
published in Clinical, Cosmetic and
Investigational Dermatology, strongly
suggests that better understanding of
cultural and ethnic variances in aspirations,
aesthetic standards and attitudes towards
cosmetic surgery are needed for more
acceptable cosmetic outcomes.
The review summarises findings in
the medical literature pertaining to
cosmetic surgery and the diversity
of cultural and ethnic perceptions of
aesthetics in women. This comprehensive
analysis of 66 peer-reviewed studies
unravels the diverse preferences that
have emerged in different societies and
how they are shaping contemporary
cosmetic surgery practises.
‘As cosmetic surgery has become
increasingly popular, and patients
from diverse ethnic backgrounds seek
interventions to maintain the balance and
harmony of their natural features, beauty
standards have become more diverse
and vary according to cultural and ethnic
norms,’ the authors write.
‘Traditional aesthetic criteria such as
symmetry, averageness, youth and sexual
dimorphism may not be applicable to
different ethnic groups. Despite this,
aesthetic surgeons still rely heavily on
Western beauty standards to assess
aesthetics.
’To provide personalised and
culturally appropriate interventions,
surgeons must understand the changing
trends and preferences of the growing
patient population and appreciate
the diverse ethnic facial morphology
and physical attributes that appeal to
patients…
‘It is crucial to consider cultural and
ethnic diversity when assessing aesthetics
and performing cosmetic surgery,’ the
authors stress.
AS COSMETIC SURGERY HAS BECOME
INCREASINGLY POPULAR, AND PATIENTS
FROM DIVERSE ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS SEEK
INTERVENTIONS TO MAINTAIN THE BALANCE
AND HARMONY OF THEIR NATURAL FEATURES,
BEAUTY STANDARDS HAVE BECOME MORE
DIVERSE AND VARY ACCORDING TO CULTURAL
AND ETHNIC NORMS.

DIVERSIFING
BEAUTY
STANDARDS
AND THE
GOLDEN RATIO
The Golden Ratio (1:1.618), rooted in
geometry, has long been considered
a marker of beauty and used as a
reference point in various artistic and
architectural designs throughout history.
In cosmetic surgery, the Golden
Ratio, or phi, has served as a guide
for achieving aesthetically ‘ideal’ and
harmonious facial proportions, the most
prominent example being Dr Stephen
Marquardt’s mask, which is based on the
Golden Ratio and reflects the ‘perfect’
facial typology.
‘Although the Marquardt phi mask
was supposed to reflect the global
facial beauty archetype, it has been
deemed inadequate in several cases,’
write the authors.
‘A recent study found that the
existence of a formula for beauty in
mathematics does not automatically
suggest that this formula represents
beauty.
‘In another study, beautiful
contemporary faces from reputed
magazines were ranked by 20
prospective ortho-facial surgery patients
and compared with classical sculptures
representing gods. Harmonious modern
female features were discovered to
have a much lower classical facial
index, suggesting major changes in
perceived facial attractiveness over
time. In this respect, it is acknowledged
that demographic differences and
cross-cultural exchanges that define
21st-century globalisation are important
phenomena guiding individual
perceptions of facial attractiveness.’
www.cosbeauty.com.au 51

FACIAL AESTHETICS
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
The authors write that beauty
ideals amongst cultural and ethnic
backgrounds vary for facial features
such as the eyes, nose and lips.
‘Beauty standards have also shifted
over time and across cultures. For
example, contemporary faces with
more harmonious features are now
preferred to the classical facial
index,’ they note.
‘Lip projection and relative size
are essential for lip aesthetics. The
optimal ratio of the vertical height
of the upper lip to that of the lower
lip in young Caucasians was 1:1.6,
whereas Black individuals were
genetically predisposed to a larger
lip volume. Full lips with a welldefined
cupid’s bow are preferred
in Han Chinese culture, while Middle
Eastern beauty is characterised
by full lips.
The review cited a study carried
out by Heidekrueger et al, which
gathered more than 1,000 responses
from 35 different nations, on lip
preference. The results showed that
most people thought the 1.0:1.0 lip
ratio to be the most appealing.
‘Nose-shape preferences also vary
across cultures and ethnicities,’ the
authors continue. ‘Latin American
and Caribbean populations favour
smaller, narrower noses with tips
that project more, whereas South
Indians and Middle Easterners prefer
straight and small noses.’
Chin and eyebrow aesthetics
also vary among ethnic groups. A
study that compared 50 nations
across regions and ethnicities
found that optimal chin projection
was correlated with the country of
residence and ethnicity. Han Chinese
favour round and pointy chins;
South India prefers thin chins; and in
the Middle East, pointed chins are
regarded as signs of beauty.
The authors note that the criterion
of an aesthetically pleasing eyebrow
has been the subject of much
debate over the years.
A German study found that
although there is no standard for
brow height, there is a preference
for lower-positioned brows with a
maximum height in the lateral third.
The review also analysed several
Chinese studies on perceptions of
beauty, reporting that the Chinese
population aims to be beautiful
by retaining its ethnicity and not
following Western beauty standards.
In one study, Asians were
compared to Caucasians of the
same age, with a focus on injectable
procedures for facial aesthetics.

The study revealed that facial
aesthetic treatments in Asians are
not directed at Westernisation,
but rather at achieving optimal
Asian ethnic characteristics (which
includes an oval-shaped face with a
smooth jaw angle).
‘Injectable procedures to
restore facial form and threedimensionality
are becoming
popular among younger
Asians, reflecting an increasing
trend towards repairing facial
imperfections or minimising
deviations from ethnic and cultural
standards of facial beauty,’ the
authors write. ‘In this way, general
facial beauty is improved, but the
aesthetic features of Asian ethnicity
are preserved.
‘As the aesthetic aspirations of
Asian patients are different from
those of Western patients, they
require distinct management and
treatment tactics. It is natural to
expect that with globalisation,
many women will seek cosmetic
surgery interventions from surgeons
of different ethnicities, who might
have different personal preferences
for aesthetic standards. Therefore,
to obtain the best outcomes, it is
critical to understand the ethnic
diversity in beauty standards.’
www.cosbeauty.com.au 53

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
CONTEMPORARY
ATTITUDES TO
COSMETIC SURGERY
The authors note that fascination
with physical beauty is becoming
increasingly common in modern
society and that culture and body
dysmorphism are predictive
factors in the decision to undergo
cosmetic surgery.
One study examined cosmetic
surgery preferences among Dutch
women and Chinese women in the
Netherlands and in China, finding that
materialistic beliefs and considerations
of face attractiveness were important
predictors of positive views about
cosmetic surgery across these cultures.
‘Notably, body acceptance was a
substantial positive factor in both the
Netherlands and China, but age and
acceptance of beauty standards were
the only significant factors in China. It
is evident that the Chinese population
seeks to be beautiful by retaining its
ethnicity rather than following Western
beauty standards,’ the authors write.
Cosmetic surgery rates in South
Korea have grown dramatically over
the past decade, following similar
growth trajectories in other East
Asian countries. According to studies
analysed in the literature review,
women gave higher overall ratings
than males, indicating that they were
more receptive to cosmetic surgery.
One study in Singapore found that
the younger population is becoming
more receptive to cosmetic surgery;
nonetheless, there is a widespread
lack of knowledge regarding the
associated risks and complications.
In today’s interconnected global
society, beauty ‘standards’ are
shifting and becoming more diverse.

As aesthetic ideals continue to
evolve and vary widely among
different ethnic and cultural groups,
the significance of ethnocultural
awareness in cosmetic surgery
only increases.
The authors conclude that a
better understanding of cultural
and ethnic variances in aspirations,
aesthetic standards and attitudes
towards cosmetic surgery can help
improve outcomes in broader
sections of society.
‘There is a clear preference for
attractiveness based on ethnic
origin and culture. Therefore,
cosmetic surgeons should consider
the ethnicity of patients when offering
cosmetic treatments... When defining
novel aesthetic treatments, treating
patients and reporting results in today’s
increasingly global world, it is essential
to consider cultural variations and
international diversity. Further studies
should be conducted to accommodate
ethnic and cultural variations in
cosmetic surgery planning.’ CBM
THERMAL WATER HAS
BEEN RENOWNED FOR
ITS SOOTHING AND
HEALING CAPABILITIES
SINCE THE 18TH
CENTURY. WORDS BY
RICKY ALLEN.
Water possesses an incredible
array of powers – from
sustaining life and shaping
the environment to generating energy and
providing relaxation. One beauty brand that
champions the power of water is the highly
regarded French skincare staple, Eau de
Thermage Avène.
Avène thermal water, which forms the
basis of all Avène products, comes from the
picturesque village of, you guessed it, Avène,
in the south of France along the banks of the
Orb Rover. It is said to be one of the most
healing and pure waters in the world.

ORIGINS OF AVÈNE
The brand’s journey began in 1736, when
Marquis de Rocozel’s horse was suffering from
extreme puritis (itching). The Marquis and his
horse found their way to the thermal spring of
Avène. After drinking and bathing in the water,
the horse was healed.
In 1743, following this amazing cure, the
Marquis set up thermal spring water baths
(now the Avène Hydrotherapy Centre) in the
region. Patients came from all over Europe
to treat their atopic dermatitis, eczema
and psoriasis. Over time, the soothing and
healing properties of the Avène spring water
gained the attention of numerous physicians
and dermatologists, who began using it to
treat a variety of skin conditions. In 1772 the
Montpellier Academy of Medicine, Europe’s
dermatological authority, recognised Avène’s
thermal spring water for its therapeutic
properties.
The reputation of the Avène Hydrotherapy
Centre continued to grow throughout Europe
and extend to other parts of the world. In 1871,
a devastating fire ravaged Chicago and the
healing waters from Avène were shipped to
the city to help treat people who had sustained
terrible burns.
In 1975 Pierre Fabre bought the Avène
Hydrotherapy Centre and spent the next 15
years undertaking clinical and pharmacological
research, proving Avène water’s efficacy on
sensitive skin and bringing the Hydrotherapy
Center into the age of medicine and science.
In 1990 the Pierre Fabre Group launched
the first line of Eau Thermale Avène skincare
products, harnessing the benefits of the Avène
thermal spring water. Under Pierre’s guidance,
the brand expanded its presence on a global
scale, maintaining its commitment to offering
high-quality and scientifically proven skincare
solutions suitable for all skin types, including
the most sensitive.
To this day, Avène maintains the purity and
authenticity of its thermal spring water by
preserving the natural environment at the
source and using it as the very foundation of
their skincare products.
resulting in an expanding array of product
lines catering to various skin types and
concerns. Some of the notable product lines
developed over the years include:
• Cicalfate, which promotes skin repair
and helps to soothe and improve the
appearance of scars;
• Tolerance, a deeply hydrating range
formulated with minimal ingredients for
hyper-sensitive, irritated skin;
• XeraCalm A.D, a lipid-replenishing range
so gentle that it can even be used on
babies’ skin;
• Hydrance, which delivers a boost of
intense hydration while helping to
replenish natural moisture levels;
• DermaAbsolu, which works on refining
skin texture as well as nourishing the skin
and providing comfort;
• Cleanance, which is designed to help
refine and clean pores and blemishes; and
• Avène Sun Care, a comprehensive
sunscreen range delivering broadspectrum
sun protection for sensitive skin.

Of course, no self-respecting beauty cabinet
(or handbag) is complete with the iconic Avène
Thermal Spring Water spray. This softening
and soothing spray is a must for every day and
also travel as it helps to instantly replenish and
freshen the skin.
Avène’s latest range of skincare, Hyaluron
Activ B3, was developed by the Avène scientists
in collaboration with Professor Jean-Marc
Lemaitre, a world-leading regenerative medicine
specialist. It is a cutting-edge range which
works on addressing and preventing the signs
of skin ageing.
Products include the Hyaluron Activ B3
Concentrated Plumping Serum, which works on
smoothing the surface of the skin and improving
the appearance of lines and wrinkles; Hyaluron
Activ B3 Renewal Firming Cream, which can be
applied over the serum for increased radiance,
skin smoothing benefits and hydration; and the
Hyaluron Activ B3 Multi Intensive Night Cream,
which promises to improve the appearance of
wrinkles in 15 days.
It’s important to note that all Avène skincare
products can be used on the most sensitive
skin. This is made possible by the absence
of harsh chemicals and, of course, the core
ingredient in all of their products, Avène thermal
spring water in its purest form, which has been
proven to hydrate and soothe skin, reduce
skin inflammation and strengthen the skin’s
natural barrier.
As research continues full steam ahead at
Avène, it is expected even more ingredients will
be isolated from this magic water and be used
in dermatological treatments and cutting-edge
skincare products. CBM
FROM ELEGANT
BUNS TO PERFECTLY
PINK MAKEUP HUES,
THE BALLET-CORE
TREND LOOKS SET
TO ENDURE. HERE’S
HOW TO MASTER THIS
TIMELESS AESTHETIC.
in recent years, we’ve witnessed
a serious uptake in ballet-core
inspired makeup and hair. This
trend, obviously, draws inspiration
from the world of ballet, and
seeks to emulate the grace, beauty and
strength of a ballerina as she effortlessly
glides across the stage. This is a look that
is whimsical yet modern, customisable yet
universally flattering.
At the heart of ballet-core makeup lies
the celebration of natural beauty. This
aesthetic seeks to enhance rather than
mask your features, allowing your unique
beauty to shine through. Lightweight,
hydrating foundations and concealers
lend a flawless-looking complexion while
maintaining a luminous, natural glow.
Neutral eyeshadows, precise eyeliner and
volumising mascara draw attention to the
eyes, while contouring and highlighting
techniques help to sculpt the facial
structure. Soft rosy or nude shades subtly
enhance the lips, providing the finishing
touch to this enchanting look.
BEAUTY
Complexion
perfection
Like a dancer prepares their canvas before
performing a masterpiece, the ballet-core
makeup trend starts with a flawless base.
Smooth, luminous skin is key in achieving this.
Serums will help to hydrate and ‘plump’ your
skin. Look for serums containing hyaluronic acid
and massage into skin before moisturising.
Before applying foundation, consider using
an illuminating prime. These products often
contain light-reflecting particles that provide a
subtle glow to the skin. Apply a thin layer over
your moisturiser to create a luminous base for
your makeup.
Emphasise the natural glow of your skin by
opting for a sheer, lightweight foundation or
tinted moisturiser. These formulas allow your
natural complexion to shine through while
providing a hint of coverage.
To enhance the ballet-inspired look, now's the
time to go against everything you've learned and
choose a foundation shade that is one shade
lighter than your skin tone. This will create a
subtle ethereal glow, reminiscent of the spotlight
hitting a dancer on stage.
the hollows of your cheeks and the sides of your
FOR
NAILING
THE
BALLET
CORE
l k
1.
Ensure proper skin preparation by
exfoliating and moisturising beforehand to
create a smooth canvas for your makeup.
2.
Use a damp beauty sponge or brush for a
seamless foundation application.
3.
When applying eyeshadows, blend well to
keep it soft and romantic and to avoid any
demarcation lines.
4.
Don't forget to curl your lashes before
applying mascara to add extra dimension
and length to your eyes.
5.
Opt for matte contouring products for a
natural shadow effect.
6.
Use a light hand when applying
highlighter to maintain a subtle, naturallooking
glow.
7.
Experiment with different lip shades to
find the perfect rosy or nude tone that
complements your skin tone. A good rule
of thumb is to match your lipstick colour to
the underside of your lips or gums.
Expert’s guide to
FOUNDATION
WE CHAT WITH NICA MARCELLO, NATIONAL EDUCATION
MANAGER AT REVLON, TO GET THE LOWDOWN ON HOW TO
CHOOSE AND APPLY FOUNDATION LIKE AN EXPERT.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO
APPLY FOUNDATION?
This depends on the type of foundation
you’re using (liquid, cream, powder) and
your personal preferences. Beauty blenders
or makeup sponges (dampened or dry) are
great for a seamless, natural or sheer finish,
while a dense foundation brush affords
higher coverage.
Formulas that are more long wearing and
achieve a medium to full coverage such as
Revlon ColorStay Longwear Makeup For
Normal/Dry Skin, $38.95, are best applied with
a foundation brush.
Fingers can also work well for blending
foundation, especially for lighter coverage. The
key to a natural-looking foundation application
is to blend well and use the appropriate
amount of product for your desired coverage.
It’s important that your foundation is also
good for your skin. Revlon Illuminance Skin
Caring Foundation, $42.95, is the perfect
hybrid of makeup and skincare. It evens out
skin tone and gives the complexion a beautiful
luminous finish without looking like you are
wearing foundation.

DO YOU HAVE ANY
APPLICATION TIPS?
Less is more: Start with a small amount
of product and gradually build coverage
if needed. It’s easier to add more product
than to remove excess.
Blend thoroughly: Blend foundation well,
especially around the jawline and hairline to
avoid visible lines of demarcation. Ensure
that there are no harsh edges where the
foundation ends. After applying foundation,
check your makeup in natural light to
ensure it looks seamless and matches your
skin tone.
One of my favourite hacks is to use the
Revlon Beauty Tool Jade Facial Roller,
$22.95, to apply foundation. You get the
benefits of a lifting massage as well as a
natural-looking airbrushed finish.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 77

BEAUTY
HOW DO I CHOOSE THE BEST
COLOUR MATCH FOR ME?
Consider your undertone: Identify your
undertone – whether you have warm, cool
or neutral undertones. Foundations come in
shades for each undertone. Cool undertones
usually have pink or rosy hues, warm undertones
lean towards yellow or golden tones, while
neutral undertones have a mix of both.
Test in natural light: Natural light offers
the most accurate representation of how a
foundation shade will look on your skin. Visit a
store with testers or stand by a window to test
shades. Swatch the foundation shade from the
area beside your mouth down to your jawline.
This area gives a better idea of how well the
foundation matches your skin tone. Since
the middle of your face usually needs more
coverage, testing here helps see if the shade
blends well with your overall complexion. Just
checking along the jawline might not show the
full picture of how the foundation matches your
overall face tone.
SHOULD YOU APPLY
FOUNDATION ON YOUR
EYELIDS AND LIPS AS A BASE?
Applying foundation on your eyelids and lips
before makeup application is a common practice
for several reasons.
Eyelids: Applying foundation on your eyelids
can help create an even base for eyeshadow
application. It can neutralise any discolouration and
camouflage veins on the lids, providing a smooth
canvas for eyeshadow colours to appear more
vibrant and better adhere. Be sure to dust on a
little Revlon PhotoReady Powder, $36.95, afterwards
to avoid your eyeshadow creasing during the day.
Lips: Applying foundation on your lips helps
to neutralise the natural colour of your lips,
allowing the true colour of your lipstick to show.
It can also help the lipstick adhere better and last
longer. Revlon Colorstay Longwear Makeup For
Combination/Oily Skin,or for Normal/Dry Skin,
$38.95, is great to use because it has 24-hour wear,
is transfer-resistant and waterproof. It also contains
hyaluronic acid for hydration.

SHOULD YOU HAVE
DIFFERENT FOUNDATION
COLOURS ON HAND?
1.
Yes, it’s quite common for people to
adjust their foundation shades between
seasons and even within seasons due
to changes in skin tone caused by sun
exposure and skin hydration levels.
Skin hydration is an important aspect
of how foundation appears on your skin.
In colder weather, skin might be drier,
and a different foundation formula or
shade might work better to complement
your skin’s hydration needs. Revlon
Illuminance Skin Caring Foundation,
$42.95, contains hydrating ingredients
such as hyaluronic acid to keep the skin
plump and healthy looking.
COSMETIC
A NATIONAL PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGN
AIMS TO INCREASE PATIENT UNDERSTANDING
OF THE RISKS OF COSMETIC SURGERY.

know
on
SURGERY
The Australian cosmetic surgery
industry is in the midst of sweeping
reform, including rules pertaining
to cosmetic surgery advertising,
mandatory GP referrals and psychological
screenings, cooling-off periods and informed
consent, and changes to who can call
themselves a ‘surgeon’.
The catalyst for these changes was a
spate of shocking media reports into
unsafe practices and medical misconduct of
certain ‘cosmetic cowboys’. A subsequent
independent review of the cosmetic surgery
sector, commissioned by the Australian Health
Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) (the
medical regulator) and the Medical Board
of Australia (MBA), found unsafe practices,
misleading advertising and a need for
minimum standards on qualifications.
Part of the reform is a public education
campaign to increase awareness of cosmetic
surgery risks and complications, to stop
the under-reporting of safety issues, and to
strengthen patients’ voices.
KNOW
THE
FEATURE
RISKS
The Know the Risks campaign by the Department of
Health and Aged Care highlights the inherent risks
of cosmetic surgery and the importance of research
using reliable sources of information to make an
informed decision about your procedure.
The Department of Health and Aged Care website –
health.gov.au/cosmeticsurgery – provides a range of
reliable information and resources, such as a patient
safety checklist and question guide, to help you make
an informed decision and get the right information
about your care.
CHOOSE A QUALIFIED
PRACTITIONER
It is important to choose a qualified medical practitioner
who is skilled and experienced in performing your surgery.
Your practitioner must be registered with the Medical Board
of Australia. You can check if someone is registered on the
Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra)
register of practitioners. You can also see their qualifications
and if there are conditions or limitations on procedures they can
perform. You should also talk to your GP for advice or a referral.

CHOOSE A
LICENSED FACILITY
Make sure you check that your surgery will take place
in a licensed facility. All states and territories restrict
where cosmetic surgeries can take place. In some
jurisdictions, certain surgeries must be performed in
licensed facilities.
Check the requirements in the state or territory
where you are planning to have your cosmetic surgery.
If something doesn’t feel right about the location
of your procedure, ask further questions, or cancel
your appointment.
KEY MESSAGES
• Make sure you are informed before you have
UNDERSTAND
THE RISKS
Every cosmetic surgery involves risks. It is
important to talk to your medical practitioner
to understand:
• what will happen during the surgery
• the risks and possible complications –
including any that may be unique to your
health history
• what results you can expect and how long the
results will last.
UNDERSTAND
YOUR RECOVERY
PLAN
Recovery and aftercare can be as important for
your health and wellbeing as the quality of the
surgery itself. If there are complications with
your recovery, you should know who to contact
and who will support you. Ask your practitioner
to give you a plan for your recovery and
aftercare, particularly if your surgery requires
general anaesthesia. If they cannot do this, you
should go somewhere else for your surgery.
THE POWER OF SCENT GOES
BEYOND JUST SMELLING PLEASANT
– IT CAN PROJECT CONFIDENCE,
ATTRACT ATTENTION AND CREATE A
LASTING IMPRESSION.
In the realm of personal grooming and style, men’s fragrances
hold a significant place. With an exquisite bouquet of scents
available, cologne has become an essential element of a
well-rounded grooming routine for men. But beyond just
smelling good, fragrances hold a deeper meaning, evoking
saying a word.
‘I think if you really peel back the layers of why people wear
fragrance, you’re usually left with the same answer: to feel good,’
says Nick Smart, Director of Agence de Parfum, the largest
distributor of luxury and bespoke fragrances in Australia.
‘Fragrance helps prepare you for the day ahead. It is the spring
ultimate fashion accessory. You also get a sense of comfort and
nostalgia, and sometimes even a dopamine boost.
‘In this context, fragrance is endlessly fascinating to me. It’s a
sense of freedom, the self-expression of who I am and who I want
to be on any given day. Some days we wear the perfume we want
and for other days we wear the perfume we need.’
Nick says the pressure points are the best places to wear
fragrance – wrists, inner elbows, even behind the knees. These
points release heat and therefore give a slow release of the
fragrance. Contrary to popular belief, try to avoid application to
the neck; over-exposure in this area can desensitise the nose.
‘In many ways, fragrance holds a mirror up to society,’ he argues.
‘In this sense, the rise of the unisex fragrance was long overdue
and inevitable. The notion that gender classification can decree
what you can and cannot wear is very outdated.
‘Paradoxically, when you are talking about self-expression within
the category of fragrance, the idea of rules and categories does
seem absurd. It is exciting to observe the number of new fragrance
houses exclusively dedicated to unisex fragrances. The landscape
has changed, and definitely for the better.’
David Whyte, Training Manager at Puig, a luxury goods and
fragrance company, wears fragrance to prepare himself for
the day.
‘It sets my mood and gives me confidence,’ he shares. ‘I
also wear fragrance as a signature. I like the idea of someone
telling me I smell nice or they know me by my smell. Men are
becoming more aware of the benefits of having good skin
and dressing well and wearing fragrance is just an extension
of that.
‘Of course, you should make sure you don’t use too much
fragrance as you don’t want to beat anyone over the head
with your smell. Wearing fragrance on your chest and neck
can also lead to an increase of hyperpigmentation in those
areas so steer clear of those spots.
‘When choosing a fragrance, think about what you want the
fragrance to do for you and how you want it to make you feel.
Do you want a fragrance to make you appear sexier and more
attractive, or more confident and refreshed? I have more than
one fragrance in my cupboard at the one time so I can switch
based on my mood and the effect I want to achieve.’
Natalija Hallert, Training Manager for Cosmax
Prestige Brands, believes that wearing fragrance
elevates not only a man’s personal grooming but also
their overall attractiveness and appeal.
‘Fragrances can evoke a sense of confidence,
cleanliness and attention to detail, which are qualities
often appreciated by everyone,’ she says. ‘A wellchosen
fragrance can be a subtle yet impactful
expression of one’s personality. Men do a have
a tendency to overuse their fragrance so this is
something they should be careful about.’
She says some of the latest ingredients which will be
popular in 2024 are bergamot and grapefruit. ‘Think
perfectly balanced citrus top notes with vetiver, clary
sage and tuberose in the heart of the fragrance and
base notes of musk, amber or additional woody notes
such as sandlewood, cedarwood, leather and musk,’
she shares. ‘The rise of unisex fragrances is allowing
men to experiment more with smells they would
normally not have found available to them.’
