From the
EDITOR
Welcome to our health and fitness issue! With the stress of rising living
costs and constant demands of our work and personal lives (the balance
is real), every so often it’s good to slow down, recalibrate and focus on
our health and wellbeing.
In this issue, we report on a significant new study that identifies the 12 key indicators
of ageing and the opportunities to decelerate, stop or even reverse the ageing process
(page 102). Plus, we share the latest research on low-volume high intensity interval
training (page 108) and keep you up to speed on advancements in the ever-evolving
world of non-surgical body contouring (page 86).
We also go under the covers to weigh in on the relationship between quality sleep
and our skin, weight, health and overall wellbeing (page 112). Our article on Skin
Fitness (page 26) takes the complexion stakes up a notch, as we share our favourite
products to achieve healthy, glowing skin.
For some well-deserved beauty therapy, head to our celebration of the And Just Like
That OG characters and their signature looks (page 92), or brush up on your makeup
know-how with our ‘Eye Makeup Tips & Tricks for Every Age’ article (page 70) and
lip trends Q&A (page 64). You’ll also not want to miss a very interesting homage to
Barbie on page 54, which asks the question: what would the iconic doll have looked
like if she had followed real-world fashion trends throughout her 60+ years? (The AI
visuals are fascinating!)
We hope you enjoy this special issue of CosBeauty Magazine. You can find more great
BACK TO (CLEANSING) BASICS
Introducing The Cleansing Cloth,
a high-performance cleansing
cloth made from biodegradable
material that is a staple for any daily
skincare routine.
The PVA cleansing cloth material
removes makeup and impurities
in conjunction with chosen cleansers
or scrubs, which makes a winning
combination suited to any skin type.
Aussie facialist and skin coach
Michelle Doolan, aka ‘the Skin Nerd’,
identified a gap in the market for a
cleansing cloth that was professionalgrade
but also accessible and
affordable to the general public. ‘I’ve
used cleansing cloths clinically with
patients for years and realised these
weren’t readily available to purchase
for use at home… I wanted to create a
product that made it as easy as possible
for all skin types,’ she explains.
With a bacteria-resistant fabric and
machine washable, The Cleansing Cloth
is a sustainable option lasting up to four
months. It’s available as a single pack
for $39.99 and a three pack for $114 via
LANCÔME UNVEILS
‘ROSE HOUSE’ AT DOMAINE
DE LA ROSE, FRANCE
Lancôme, the iconic French luxury
beauty brand, has proudly unveiled
the newly renovated Rose House
at the Domaine de la Rose estate
in Grasse, an eco-designed,
contemporary pink monolith in the
historic heart of French perfumery.
The UNESCO-listed Domaine de la
Rose is an ecological horticultural site
spanning nearly 10 acres which holds
a special place in Lancôme’s heritage.
With Rose House sitting as the
centrepiece of Domaine de la Rose,
the estate is dedicated to the organic
polyculture of perfume plants and is
where Lancôme aims to contribute
to the preservation, transmission and
celebration of local biodiversity and
perfume heritage
For over 50 years, Domaine de la
Rose has cultivated fragrant plants
and organic roses, making it the ideal
location to nurture and develop the
extraordinary skincare breakthrough
of Lancôme’s Absolue range.
Designed to push the boundaries of
luxury skincare, Absolue harnesses
the power of ‘Longevity Science’, a
revolutionary scientific frontier that
aims to redefine the ageing process
at a molecular level.
At the heart of the Absolue range
lies a remarkable ingredient: the
perpetual rose. On five hectares in
Grasse at Le Domaine de la Rose,
the Absolue Perpetual Rose is a
phenomenon of nature blooming
rigorously almost all year long. The
species is harvested each year in
May, and it takes 800 kilograms of
rose petals to make just 1 kilogram of
Rose Absolue.
These roses have long been the
symbol of Lancôme and those
grown in the south of France are
woven into many of the brand’s
beloved products.
Lancôme’s Absolue range is
available for purchase at Lancôme
counters worldwide and online at
DERMACEUTIC LABORATOIRE
CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH
HIGH TEA AT THE QT
Starting in skincare with a focus
on peels before moving into
a range of post-procedure
cosmeceuticals, Dermaceutic
Laboratoire has good reason to
celebrate 20 successful years with
their science-based ranges.
With the backdrop of the
George Room at the QT hotel,
guests were treated to a delicious
high tea and personalised
Belinda Xia.
Dermocosmetica CEO, George
Kypreos, took us through their
10-year journey as the Australian
and New Zealand distributor
of Dermaceutic Laboratoire
and how these regions have
become the fifth largest in sales
for these ranges worldwide.
He then introduced Nicola
Fagiuola, Managing Director
of Dermaceutic Laboratoire,
which he founded in 2002 with
the strong belief that science is
the skin’s best ally. Nicola gave
a comprehensive history of the
brand, how it started and his
science-based ethos, before
taking us through the properties
of the hero products in their
cosmeceutical range, including;
Mela Cream (pigmentation
cream), K Ceutic (post-treatment
cream) and C25 Cream
(antioxidant concentrate).
The Dermaceutic Laboratoire
range include 10 peels – from
superficial to ‘doctors-only’ deep
– that are able to treat a number
of skin concerns, including
fine lines and wrinkles, acne,
melasma and pigmentation. The
cosmeceutical range, although
developed for post-treatment
use, is also perfect for everyday
different skin types.
SKIN
FITNESS
for
healthy,
glowing
skin
A CLEAR AND RADIANT
COMPLEXION
REQUIRES A TWO-
PRONGED APPROACH
THAT INCLUDES A
COMBINATION OF
BOTH INTERNAL AND
EXTERNAL CARE.
Your skin is
your body’s
largest organ
and serves as
a protective
barrier against
external aggressors. It faces
constant exposure to toxins and
environmental pollutants on a
daily basis – and it needs your
unwavering support.
Proper skincare and lifestyle
choices can truly make a
difference in the appearance
and health of your skin. External
care, such as using the right
skincare products for your skin
type, can significantly help
improve the appearance of your
skin. Just as important is internal
care – nourishing your body with
the right nutrients and staying
hydrated will help support
healthy skin from the inside out.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 27

INNER
BEAUTY
HEALTH
reflections
Your skin, hair and nails are all closely
connected, and their health is influenced by
your overall wellbeing.
One of the most important things you can
do for your skin is to stay hydrated. Drinking
plenty of water throughout the day helps in
flushing out toxins from your body and aids
in skin detoxification. All that H2O also helps
keep your skin looking plump and hydrated,
which can help reduce the appearance of fine
lines and wrinkles.
Additionally, eating a healthy, balanced
diet that’s rich in antioxidants and other
skin-boosting nutrients can help combat free
radicals and support healthy skin. Foods like
leafy greens, berries and fatty fish are all great
choices for promoting healthy skin. Adding
vitamin C-rich foods like oranges, capsicums
and strawberries can help boost collagen
production and maintain skin elasticity for
longer. Incorporate healthy fats, fibre and
anti-inflammatory foods to support your
immune system and reduce inflammation.
A natural way to detoxify your skin is
through exercise. Sweating helps release
impurities from the skin while promoting
blood circulation, which nourishes skin
cells and aids in the regeneration of new
cells. Regular physical activity is known to
reduce stress, which has been linked to

inflammatory skin conditions such as acne,
eczema and psoriasis.
Stress is a major contributor to poor skin
health in general, so it’s important to find
effective ways to manage it. One method is
practising yoga or meditation, which can help
you relax and release tension. Incorporating
regular exercise into your routine can also
combat stress, as it helps release the “feelgood”
chemicals, endorphins.
Getting adequate sleep is also a
contributing factor for skin health. During
sleep, your body repairs and rejuvenates
itself, allowing your skin to recover from
the day’s exposure to pollutants and other
environmental stressors.
SKINCARE
for healthy,
happy skin
In addition to focusing on internal
health, it’s also important to choose
the right skincare products for your
skin type. Whether you have dry skin,
oily skin or something in between,
using the right products can help
improve the appearance of your skin.
Look for products formulated with
Cleansers
To achieve clear and glowing skin, it’s crucial to
start with cleansing. Choose a gentle cleanser that
is suitable for your skin type. The right cleanser
will effectively remove dirt, makeup and excess oil
without over-drying or irritating your skin. Make
sure to cleanse your face twice a day, once in the
morning and once before going to bed.
Exfoliators
and scrubs
Regular exfoliation is essential in
maintaining healthy and glowing
skin. Exfoliating helps remove dead
skin cells, unclog pores and promote
cell turnover. Be cautious not to overexfoliate,
as this can cause irritation
and redness. Opt for a gentle
exfoliant or mild scrub two to three
times a week.
serums
After cleansing, apply targeted serums
to address specific skin concerns such
as hyperpigmentation, dullness,
congestion or fine lines. Look for
ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which
helps to retain moisture, or antioxidants,
which can protect against premature
ageing caused by environmental
Moisturisers &
hydrating oils
Moisturising is essential for all skin types,
even oily or acne-prone skin. A wellformulated
moisturiser with ingredients
like ceramides or niacinamide helps
strengthen the skin barrier and retains
moisture. If your skin needs extra
hydration, consider adding a facial oil.
Just make sure it is suited for your skin
type and non-comedogenic.

Endymed
Intensif
THE MOST
ADVANCED RF
MICRONEEDLING
TECHNOLOGY
AVAILABLE
THE ENDYMED INTENSIF HAS
GAINED A REPUTATION AS THE
ULTIMATE RF MICRONEEDLING
DEVICE, WITH MINIMAL
DISCOMFORT AND DOWNTIME
AND IMPRESSIVE SKIN SMOOTHING
AND FIRMING RESULTS. WE CHAT
WITH METTA LEE FROM RENEW
SKIN IN CANBERRA TO SEE WHY IT’S
MAKING WAVES.
Metta Lee, Renew Skin, Canberra
Radiofrequency microneedling has become a go-to
skin treatment – but what exactly is it?
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is the combination
of RF energy and skin needling in one treatment.
Both of these treatments elicit a healing response in
the skin to stimulate collagen and cell renewal. By
combining the two, we are giving the skin a more
powerful stimulation for an even stronger response,
with minimal downtime.
It can be performed on all skin types and can
address several concerns at once, such as fine lines and
wrinkles, scarring, uneven skin texture and skin laxity.
Why do you choose EndyMed Intensif for your
RF skin needling in your clinic?
EndyMed uses proprietary advanced 3DEEP
radiofrequency technology, which is incomparable
to other machines on the market. Having seen the
science and research that allows for a deeper, more
effective delivery of radiofrequency to the skin coupled
with an excellent safety profile really drew us to this
treatment. We strive to provide our clients with only
effective, science-based quality treatments and felt that
EndyMed and the Intensif RF microneedling treatment
qualified for this. It’s in a league of its own!
We were so excited to bring this service to Canberra
as we are all about results and, knowing we had the
back up of Endymed, provide a treatment of such a
high calibre.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 41

COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
What are some of the key features that makes
EndyMed stand out?
EndyMed is a single device that is able to provide a
solution to multiple skin concerns. It is engineered
thoughtfully for the practitioner’s use and the science
that goes into the machines is really impressive.
One of the treatments that can be perfomed with
EndyMed is Intensif RF microneedling, which uses
non-insulated 24k gold needles to conduct heat safely
into the skin. At the same time, 3DEEP radiofrequency
distributes energy evenly into the dermis where
structural fibres lie. Combining the needles with the
3DEEP RF technology makes the needling more
effective for collagen remodelling.
Can you walk us through the treatment
experience?
At Renew Skin, we begin with an initial consultation to
assess the skin. Clients are recommended to begin a
skincare routine to prep the skin for best results with
the Intensif. For this we love the iS Clinical range.
The treatment goes for around 1.5 hours, including
time for numbing and before and after photos. The
treatment itself can take anywhere from 20 to 45
minutes, depending on the area treated. Treatment
is tolerable with minimal discomfort. The immediate
effects are mild to moderate erythema (redness).
Downtime can vary with dry, flaking skin, redness
and swelling as common indicators of healing and skin
renewal.
Long-term results include stimulating collagen,
creating a healthy skin barrier and strengthening skin
integrity – all of which help prevent signs of ageing.
Results will vary for each individual.
While everyone is different, we generally recommend
3 treatments 4 to 6 weeks apart.
What are the benefits of properly preparing skin
before Endymed treatment?
This treatment is not suitable for compromised skin,
so starting a quality skincare routine like iS Clinical
is essential for the improvement of skin health and
treatment prep.
We choose to stock iS Clinical because of its
innovative scientific research and use of high quality,
pure botanical ingredients. Because of its pure
potency, it is unlikely to cause a negative reaction on
the skin and many clients can see an improvement in
the look of their skin in a short period of time.
The majority of our clients begin their skincare

EndyMed
NO PAIN,
ALL GAIN
EndyMed’s unique, patented 3DEEP
technology delivers RF energy
3 layers deep into the skin, with
minimal epidermal heat and no pain,
reactivating your natural collagen
production to help improve wrinkles
and lift and tighten skin.
With 6 RF generators, 3DEEP is
the most innovative skin technology
available today.
routine with the Reparative Moisture Emulsion and
Active Serum. This helps prepare the skin with all
the required vitamins and antioxidants that give us a
healthy skin barrier to work with.
What about post procedure?
Post treatment, all of our clients are given iS Clinical
Sheald Recovery Balm to use for the duration of
the healing process. In my experience, the Sheald
Recovery Balm has been a miracle worker. It not only
helps speed up the healing process but also hydrates
and helps protect skin from environmental factors.
Who is your typical patient?
Our typical clients are those who have been
wanting to start a practise of self-care and are
unsure where to begin. We treat a range of concerns
at our clinic, mostly regenerating skin health and
preventing signs of ageing with rejuvenating
treatments and quality skincare.
EndyMed Intensif treatment is most popular
amongst our clients who are interested in scar
reduction, preventing signs of ageing and
collagen induction.
What results are you seeing?
We start to see results after just one treatment. Acne
scars are not as deep or obvious, pore size is visibly
reduced, and the condition of the skin appears
healthier, firmer and more evenly toned.
What are your clients saying about EndyMed?
Our clients are very impressed with how fast they
are seeing results and are feeling more confident in
themselves. It has been a popular treatment due to
the results and minimal downtime. CBM
Sustainability
BEAUTY
THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY IS TAKING
POSITIVE ACTION IN ENVIRONMENTAL
RESPONSIBILITY. RICKY ALLEN LOOKS
AT THE SOME OF THE COMPANIES
LEADING THE CHARGE.
With sustainability
at the core of
innovation, the
beauty ecosystem
– from supply chain processes to
ingredient sourcing to packaging
– is evolving to respond to the
growing demand (and necessity)
for environmentally conscious
and sustainable products. As this
practice continues, we can expect
to see even more significant strides
towards a greener future.
Aveda has long been a leader in
sustainable beauty. In accordance
with the brand’s founding mission
to care for the world in which
we live, it has pioneered new
benchmarks of environmental
responsibility in beauty, with
priorities in the following six areas:
safe beauty; sourcing responsibility;
packaging responsibility; Leaping
Frog-approved vegan formulas;
responsible manufacturing; as well
as helping to provide clean water to
people in need in Aveda’s sourcing
communities and communities
around the world.
In January 2023 the Aveda
corporation announced a milestone
in achieving B Corp Certification,
meeting high verified standards
of social and environmental
performance, transparency and
accountability.
Since 2021 Aveda has joined
with Take 3 for the Sea to improve
awareness and education and
fundraise to stop ocean plastic

in Beauty
pollution. Together with community
groups nationwide, they have
removed 1.5 million pieces of
rubbish from the sea.
Aveda lives and breathes its
mission; the company headquarters
are located on a 58 acre national
wildlife-certified campus in
Minnesota, USA, complete with
honeybee colonies, an employeecurated
vegetable garden, electric
vehicle charging stations and miles
of running trails for the staff.
Aveda was the first beauty
company to receive a Cradle to
Cradle charter for its commitment
to sustainable products, packaging
and production. In 2013, Aveda
was honoured with the first
Legacy Leaders Award for Cradle
to Cradle for its pioneering role
in environmental leadership.
And in 2017 Aveda received the
Sustainability Leadership Award
during the Sustainable Beauty
Awards by Ecovia Intelligence.
L’Oreal Paris is another
powerhouse leading the charge.
Since 2005, the L’Oreal Group has
reduced the CO 2
emissions of its
plants and distribution centres
by 91%, and at the end of 2022
L’Oréal had 110 carbon-neutral sites
(meaning they use 100% renewable
energy), including 22 factories.
L’Oreal Paris has started a
programme called L’Oreal for
the Future, with the aim of
transforming its activities to respect
the planet’s limits. The beauty
giant says it is committed to raising
the bar, implementing a new
internal transformation programme
that doesn’t just focus on the
company’s direct impact but also
its indirect, extended impact – for
example, the activity of its suppliers
and the use of L’Oreal Paris products
by consumers.
The company has allocated 100
million euros to the regeneration of
eco-systems and the development
of the circular economy and
50 million euros to a charitable
endowment fund to support highly
vulnerable women.
BEAUTY
FEATURE
In 2022, 97% of L’Oreal’s new
or renovated products had an
improved environmental and
social profile. By the end of 2020,
L’Oreal had helped more than
100,000 people from disadvantaged
communities find employment
through its solidarity purchasing
and inclusion programmes. In
2022 L’Oreal achieved an “A”
score in all CDP rankings: fighting
climate change, managing water
sustainability, preserving forests. It
is the only company to achieve this
distinction 7 years in a row.
Davines is another company
taking sustainability seriously – and
it’s done so for 40 years since its
inception in 1983. The luxury hair
care line’s head office is located
in Italy and runs as a carbonneutral
facility. Many of the brand’s
ingredients are grown there as well.
As a Certified B Corporation since
2016, sustainability, biodiversity
and social conscience are at the
forefront of everything Davines
does. In 2021 Davines launched the
annual We Sustain Beauty, a global
socio-environmental campaign
to take climate action through
regenerative organic agriculture. It
has a zero-impact policy across all
product lines and is a proud partner
of Plastic Bank. In 2021 alone, this
partnership prevented 100 tonnes of
plastic from being dispersed in the
sea, contributing to recovery actions
in the coastal communities of
Indonesia, the Philippines and Brazil.
Furthering its commitment, from
2022 Davines is plastic-neutral –
which means for every product sold,
Davines collect and removes the
Regeneration Hair & Body Wash
is the brand’s latest sustainable
offering. It is a limited-edition
shampoo and body wash which
uses both regenerative organic and
slow food presidium ingredients.
This product is symbolic of Davines’
efforts to evoke change and
elevate the conversation around
regenerative organic agriculture.
It contains Barbera Grape
Pomace extract from a vineyard
in Terersetolo, Parma, Italy. This

new offering was cultivated in
collaboration with Davines Rodale
Institute European Regenerative
Organic Centre, which was set up
to work on growing the company’s
sustainability abilities associated
with the ingredients it uses.
L’Occitane has also always
had sustainability and biodiversity
as its mission, most notably
through its sourcing of ingredients.
The company works with 130
French farmers and 10,000 pickers.
Ingredients in the Immortelle
range originate from farms in
Corsica, and their Lavende products
from Provence.
All of L’Occitane’s 55 stores
worldwide have run on 100%
renewable energy since 2020. Two
recently opened “green” stores –
one in Hong Kong and one in Bondi
Westfield in NSW – contain a refill
fountain for product refilling as well
as a green wall to help with purer
oxidation of the store’s air.
L’Occitane is a part of the
New Plastic Economy Global
Commitment to help wipe out
plastic pollution. The Hong Kong
store engages with the community
in environmental protection and
even offers a reward programme
to those who use the store for
recycling.
It is heartening to think that these
beauty companies are leading
the world in their efforts towards
sustainability and leaving a positive
impact on the world. It’s also
important for us, as consumers,
to support brands that prioritise
sustainability and ethically-conscious
environmental practices. CBM
IS
70
THE
NEW
50?
TO LOOK AT HER YOU
WOULDN’T BELIEVE IT,
BUT SKIN RENU CLINIC
OWNER SALLY MAHONY IS
TURNING 70 NEXT YEAR. SO
NATURALLY WE HAD TO ASK
HER SECRETS TO FINDING
THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH.
At just shy of 70 years old, Sally
Mahony (Sheehan) defies the
conventional perception of ageing,
proving that 70 might truly be the
new 50. As a registered nurse and
co-owner of Skin Renu skin and
laser clinic in Balmain, Sydney, Sally
has spent her career helping others discover their best
selves, while simultaneously embracing a lifestyle that
emphasises looking and feeling great at any age.
Sally’s approach to ageing is holistic: non-surgical
treatments for helping to keep her skin smooth and
firm, as well as an active lifestyle, a healthy diet and
regular exercise for maintaining her overall wellbeing.
Her belief in the powerful synergy of these elements
becomes evident upon seeing her – after all, Sally is
living proof of their effectiveness.
‘I’ve always been active. I represented my school
in hockey, athletics and tennis back in the day, and I
still play tennis once a week, do Pilates twice a week,
walk the dog each day and enjoy a busy social life,’
she says.
‘Ageing well can come down to genetics, but we
also have a role to play in determining how we age. It
takes a conscious effort to look after yourself, but this
is your body and you should look after it. I do enjoy a
G&T, glass of champagne and fine food, but I balance
it with watching what I eat for the rest of the week.’
As Sally attests to, when we invest in ourselves,
both inside and out, and truly feel confident in the
skin we’re in, we are re-imagining the possibilities of
entering our ‘golden years’ and proving that age is,
indeed, just a number.

SALLY AT 55
SALLY AT 69
The annual non-
surgical treatment
Sally swears by
Of course, Sally’s secrets for a youthful appearance
aren’t just limited to a healthy lifestyle. First and
foremost, she credits her annual Thermage FLX
treatments for contributing to her smooth and
radiant skin.
‘For me, personally, Thermage FLX has probably
allowed me to age more slowly,’ she shares. ‘It has
maintained my skin quality and helped with my
“ageing years”. For someone of my age, people
constantly say “your skin looks good” or “you
haven’t aged one bit”.’
Thermage FLX is a non-invasive treatment that
uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deep,
collagen-rich layers of skin. This stimulates existing
collagen and promotes new collagen growth,
offering both instant and long-lasting, naturallooking
skin tightening for the face, eyes and
even body.
Thermage FLX is the pioneer of radiofrequencybased
skin tightening. At the time of writing,
there have been more than 2.5 million Thermage
treatments performed around the world, 50+
published studies attesting to its safety and
efficacy, and more than 70 patents issued.
The beauty of Thermage FLX is that in just
one treatment, just once a year, it can deliver
noticeable yet natural-looking skin tightening,
with no needles, no surgery and minimal to
no downtime.
‘We’ve been treating patients with Thermage at
Skin Renu for 15 years. We purchased Thermage
soon after we opened the clinic and have
upgraded along the way to its current iteration of
Thermage FLX,’ Sally explains. ‘When we first used
Thermage, I was amazed how well it did. I treated
a friend as a model when we purchased Thermage
and when I saw her a couple of months later, I
noticed her nasolabial folds had reduced. She
looked more youthful and brighter. I have never
used fillers on her. The results can be amazing.’
‘We chose Thermage as it was the gold standard
of radiofrequency technology at the time and it
AGEING WELL CAN COME DOWN
TO GENETICS, BUT WE ALSO HAVE
A ROLE TO PLAY IN DETERMINING
HOW WE AGE.
still is. There are other devices on the market now, but
why change when we know it works?
Thermage FLX produces both instant and longlasting
results. There is an immediate noticeable
improvement in the texture and tone of the skin, with
a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles and sagging, as the
existing collagen fibres tighten and contract. However,
the most significant and long-lasting results from
Thermage come from the stimulation of new collagen
production. Over the next several months, as new
collagen is produced, the skin continues to become
tighter and smoother. Sally says she personally notices
a difference 2 months after the treatment, with full
results taking up to 6 months.
She says Thermage is an important tool for Skin
Renu clinic. ‘Thermage FLX is popular with our
patients, with many requesting the treatment annually.
Halfway during treatment we invite patients to sit up
and look at the one side treated. It shows what to
expect. This should settle as any immediate swelling
subsides, but it gives a good indication of the
expected result.’
‘It also has no downtime, which is huge for the
working woman,’ she says. ‘I have personally had a
Thermage treatment and gone out that night without
a worry of any noticeable changes to my face.’
FOR ME, PERSONALLY,
THERMAGE FLX HAS
PROBABLY ALLOWED ME
TO AGE MORE SLOWLY
THAN I WOULD HAVE
OTHERWISE.

Skin Renu turns 15
Skin Renu turns 15
Skin Renu is a modern, light-filled laser and skin
rejuvenation clinic in the heart of Balmain, Sydney.
The clinic, which is celebrating its 15th year this
August, is known for its advanced skin treatments
and cutting-edge technology, which are designed
to help patients achieve a youthful and radiant
complexion they can feel confident about.
Skin Renu offers a wide range of services to suit
a myriad of skin concerns and skin types, including
anti-wrinkle and filler treatments, acne treatments, skin
rejuvenation, skin resurfacing, vascular and pigment
treatments, non-surgical skin tightening, and more.
‘Skin needs to be actively looked after to keep it
healthy,’ says Sally. ‘And, as every skin is different to
the next, the right treatment can only be determined
after proper assessment. At Skin Renu, we treat the
skin as needed. This might be improving fine lines
from ageing, sun damage or lifestyle, or addressing
rosacea or pigmentation.
Sally explains that while Thermage works on the
skin by tightening and rejuvenating, fillers, anti-wrinkle
treatments and laser treatments are needed for other
concerns such as dynamic wrinkles, volume depletion,
asymmetry, pigmentation and vascular conditions, and
acne scarring. Thermage works synergistically with
most other modalities and can usually be performed
before or after other treatments.
‘It does not stop the muscles from creasing the skin,
so anti-wrinkle treatments complement Thermage
nicely; fillers can be used for symmetry, enhancing lips
and filling in marionette lines, etc; more superficial
fine lines and pores can be treated with Infini, another
radiofrequency device; sun damage can be treated
with Fraxel or Laser Genesis; pigmentation can be
addressed with Pico Genesis; vascular lesions can be
treated with Laser Genesis / Excel V+; and peels, skin
needling and topical cosmeceuticals can be used for
overall skin rejuvenation,’ she says.
Sally stresses that Thermage is not a replacement
for a facelift. ‘We are very upfront with our patients
and emphasise that Thermage is not a facelift; it is
an improvement in skin laxity. Thermage is not for
everyone. If a person has heavy jowls, they would not
be a suitable candidate. The best results are typically
on those aged between 40 and 60.
‘I have not had a facelift, but at a certain age
sometimes surgery is the best option,’ she cautions.
‘However, by looking after our skin and empowering
ourselves with knowledge about the benefits of laser or
radiofrequency treatments, we can certainly postpone
the need for a facelift or not need one at all.’
And Sally’s final words of wisdom? ‘It’s never too
late to start turning back the clock. You can always
improve the quality of your skin and, for the right
candidate, energy-based devices such as Thermage
can go a long way in helping to lessen the signs
of ageing.’ CBM
L’Interdit
fragrance by
Givenchy, $177
MAKEUP, SKINCARE AND FRAGRANCE HAVE
BECOME PART OF THE BIGGER PICTURE OF FASHION
HOUSES, GIVING LOYAL FANS MORE REASONS
TO STAY ENGAGED WITH THEIR MOST-COVETED
LABELS. WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.
There seems to be a natural progression from fashion label to
beauty brand for many of the world’s leading fashion houses,
which, of course, makes perfect sense. To be successful in
fashion, you need to understand women and aesthetics.
Following with a beauty range is the next logical step.
Perhaps the most notable example is legendary luxury
fashion house, Chanel. In 1910, Coco Chanel opened her first
store at 21 Rue Cambon in Paris. It started inauspiciously as
a hat store – and went on to become one of the world’s most
famous fashion brands.
Chanel has changed the course of fashion – you can thank
her for creating the little black dress and evening trousers
for women, which were groundbreaking and era-defining at
the time. The influential designer was also well ahead of her
time in merging the worlds of fashion and beauty. In 1921
the iconic Chanel No 5 fragrance was created. It became an
instant hit and is the best-selling perfume of all time.
In similar fashion, The House of Dior, synonymous with
dramatic evening dresses and sculpted silhouettes, burst
on the Paris fashion scene in 1947. Dior’s revolutionary
‘New Look’ was accompanied by a fragrance, Miss Dior,
the finishing touch designed to ‘leave a trail of desire in a
woman’s wake’. This was followed by the now-famous Rouge
Chanel fragrances,
from $134

La Perla fragrances, from $110
Dior signature lipstick in 1953, a natural extension of its
emboldened fashion offerings.
Today both houses of Chanel and Dior offer a full
complement of beauty products, from fragrance to makeup
and skincare – in addition to their couture fashion design
and accessories.
Givenchy followed, launching in 1952 as a line of
‘separates’. The revered fashion house’s route to first-class
beauty was a little different. Hubert de Givenchy originally
created the brand’s first perfume, L’Interdit, for his beloved
muse Audrey Hepburn in 1957. He was heard to describe
her as ‘an enchantress, inspiring love and beauty, and fairies
never quite disappear altogether’. An addictive floralwoody
composition, it has been said that Hepburn wore it
for a year before its release to the public.
Further ahead, in 1989 Givenchy launched makeup and
then skincare. Le Prisme Visage face powder was one of
Givenchy’s early beauty products – and reportedly muchloved
by Hepburn. This product was revolutionary with its
four variants of colour, which can be applied separately or
all together depending on the colour and texture needs of
the user’s skin. This product is still one of the brand’s topselling
makeup items.
Hermès, long renowned for its luxury leather accessories
(think Birkin status) and fragrances (the first Hermès
perfume, Eau d’Hermès, was made in 1951 and is still
regarded as one of the finest fragrances), entered late into
the beauty scene. It was only in 2020 that Hermès launched
its first makeup range, a line of lipsticks inspired by its
iconic Birkin bag and silk scarves. Next came a range of nail
polishes and blushes in 2022, and an eye makeup range is
expected later this year.
Tom Ford launched his fashion label in 2005 and by 2006
he had signed with Estee Lauder to distribute and oversee
the Tom Ford beauty brand and in 2022 Estee Lauder
bought the business. The essence of Tom Ford beauty has
always been glamour, and that has seamlessly transitioned
into a large range of exquisite beauty products.
One of the latest fashion brands to start making
beauty products is La Perla. The brand launched in 1954,
specialising in evening wear and swimwear but is best
known for its luxury lingerie. In 2019 La Perla launched its
‘couture’ fragrance collection, a selection of eight unique
fragrances. Lipsticks, mascaras and eyebrow products have
now followed with more products on the way. Each product
is as special as its trademark sought-after lingerie.
I feel sure that beauty ranges from fashion labels will be
the norm and not the exception, and with that a welcome
expansion of the beauty landscape. CBM
BARBIE FEVER IS SPREADING LIKE WILDFIRE AND PEOPLE
ALL OVER THE WORLD ARE JUMPING ON THE BARBIECORE
TREND. BUT WHAT IF THE ROLES WERE REVERSED AND THE
FAMOUS DOLL FOLLOWED OUR HOTTEST STYLE TRENDS
OF EACH DECADE INSTEAD? WORDS BY VICTORIA COLLINS.
With the highly anticipated release
of the Barbie movie, starring
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling,
you could say we really are in a
Barbie world right now. Barbie fever has taken
hold in the run-up to the film’s premiere and
release and Barbiecore has become a hot trend
with people around the world embracing some
of the doll’s most iconic looks.
But with over 60 years in production, how
many of Barbie’s most famous looks were
actually influenced by the trends of the time?
With the help of AI, digital marketing agency
Evoluted has reimagined how Barbie may have
appeared if she had closely followed the most
popular beauty and fashion trends of each of
the past six decades.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 55

FEATURE
Real-life
Barbie?
How she could have looked if she followed real-world
fashion trends throughout her 60+ years
Evoluted compares the actual Barbie dolls of the time period with their AI alternatives
1950s
Released in 1959 to a worldwide
customer base, Barbie is officially a
child of the 50s. Although the swinging
60s were just around the corner, on her
release, the original Barbie was scantily
dressed in a monochrome swimsuit and
sported large gold hooped earrings.
Instead, AI and the Evoluted team’s
reimagined version of Barbie in the
1950s is somewhat more conservative.
In the 50s, it was widely assumed
that women’s primary roles should
centre around marriage, homemaking
and motherhood. Research university
VCU claimed long-flowing traditional
dresses were the norm, while a feminine
hourglass silhouette was highly popular.
You would often see a woman of that
period sporting a dress with a narrow
waistline and a full skirt paired with
an apron.
The idea of a career for women was
not as widely encouraged or accepted,
and the prevailing belief was that
a woman’s place was in the home.
Evolted’s AI Barbie portrays what a
doll of that time could look like if she
followed the fashion trends of the time.
1960s
The itsy bitsy bright swimsuit is probably best
associated with Pamela Anderson in the 80s hit show
Baywatch, but did you know another famous blonde
sported it first?
That’s right, in the 60s one of Barbie’s signature
looks was a rather risque hot pink swimming
costume. Although the swinging 60s saw lots of
fashion rules go out of the window, many women
were still drawn to more modest fits.
That being said, mini skirts, shift and A-line dresses
and heels were hot in demand in the 60s. Evoluted’s
AI version of 1960s Barbie shows her sporting a
brunette beehive, a simple white shift dress with a
60s staple Peter Pan collar and Mary Jane style heels.
1970s
Blue eyeshadow was all the rage in the
70s and that’s one beauty trend Barbie
adopted during this period. The rest
of her style is high-glam and consists
of her signature hot pink coloured
dress, paired with a feather boa.
The AI interpretation of Barbie
differs, however. As the 70s
epitomised a decade centred around
music, Evoluted’s doll embraces a
mix of disco glamour and bohemian
freedom with knee-high lace-up
boots, a hippie-style floral poncho and
a silk head scarf. Accessories aren’t
sold separately either, as our Barbie
pairs her look with a pink guitar.
1980s
FEATURE
The 80s was notorious for its bold
fashion choices. From oversized
accessories to bulging shoulder
pads and neon athleisure, it’s hard
to pinpoint just one look from this
decade of bold style trends.
The actual Barbie wears her
famous power suit, which was heavily
influenced by the increasing presence
of women in corporate workplaces
during this decade. Our AI Barbie,
however, has been influenced by the
punk and new wave subculture, which
significantly impacted 80s fashion.
She sports all the signature fashion
elements of the 80s with her leather
dress, fishnet stockings and short
choppy haircut, which was largely
adopted by those who embraced the
edgy and rebellious style.
1990s
Brit pop, the PlayStation and Friends weren’t
the only key ingredients to the 90s, as there
were some pivotal fashion and beauty trends
that emerged during the decade, too.
Unlike 1991’s Totally Hair Barbie doll that
donned Rapunzel-length hair and 80s-style
retro attire, our AI Barbie represents a more
familiar face of the 90s.
Inspired by the grunge movement and
popularised by 90s icons, Kate Moss and Rachel
from Friends, slip dresses became a wardrobe
essential and that’s the outfit Evoluted’s AI doll
is rocking. The slip dress is paired with some
platform stilettos, which became a popular
trend among women, thanks to the Spice Girls
donning similar shoes.

Pop princesses defined the 00s, such
as the iconic trinity of Britney, Christina
and Beyoncé, who topped the charts
while influencing the fashion for
women everywhere.
Diamante crop tops, tinted shades
and ultra-low-waisted jeans were all
the rage during the early Millennium.
But the Barbie doll of the time was
donning a ballerina outfit.
However, this AI Barbie is a
testament to the time with her
velour tracksuit, trainers and pinktinted
shades.
2010s
There was no family more
influential on fashion and beauty
trends than the Kardashian-
Jenners during the 2010s. In line
with Instagram culture, women of
the late noughties lapped up what
the sisters were wearing.
Plump pouts, tiny waists and
big butts were the trends of the
decade, and ultimately makeup
and clothing that enhanced
these features were all the rage.
High-waisted bikinis, bodycon
dresses and long, sleek hair were
just some of the aesthetics we all
adopted from the clan.
This AI Barbie has adopted
these traits too with her enviable
curves, Mediterranean tan and
plump lips.

2020s
Gen Z has already banished the
Millennial skinny jeans from their
wardrobes, and empowered the
minimal clean girl aesthetic, thanks to
the rise of the beauty trend on TikTok.
Recognised as the generation
focused on sustainability, there has
also been a resurgence of preloved
fashion as apps like eBay, Vinted and
Depop have taken the generation and
fashion world by storm.
Taking inspo from the 90s and
early noughties, oversized tees, lowrise
jeans, crop tops and teeny-tiny
handbags are essential in the current
fashion climate. Evoluted’s AI Barbie
embraces this style with her simple
makeup, brogues and socks combo,
oversized leather jacket and tiny
glasses and bag. The actual Barbie
sports a princess-style dress.
Like the princess dress, Barbie is
synonymous with the colour pink.
Now, with the release of the Barbie
film, this rosy hue is high in demand
partly due to the film release and
the girly Y2K trends that have been
favoured in 2023.
Barbie-core
has got us all
tickled pink
In light of the release of the Barbie movie this July, the
world has become obsessed with Barbiecore. Vibrant,
bold and unapologetically feminine styles have taken hold,
particularly outfits with bubblegum and hot pink hues.
Celebs like Kim K, Lizzo and Anne Hathaway have all
embraced the playful and girly style - think mini dresses,
tiny handbags, glitter and platform heels.
We ‘normies’ are adopting the trend too with Barbiethemed
hen dos, birthday parties and night outs. In fact,
there has been a remarkable surge in the popularity of
pink-themed parties, with a staggering 71% increase in
the number of people searching for ‘pink decorations’ on
Pinterest to recreate this vibrant and fun-filled theme.
In line with this trend, Barbiecore-inspired outfits have
witnessed an incredible 900% rise in popularity on Pinterest
and a 23% rise for ‘pink outfits’’ on Google in the UK.
Why is Barbie still just as popular now?
From controversial sex doll origins in the 50s to a business
gal makeover in the 80s and a hit song named after her in
the 90s, Barbie remains a cultural icon. Now, a blockbuster
film about her solidifies her historical influence.
Despite her popularity, Barbie hasn’t failed to stir up
controversy though. When she first burst onto the scene,
there was contention surrounding her debut as her
invention was reportedly based on a sex doll that Barbie
creator, Ruth Handler, had seen in an adult store.
In more recent times, her real-life measurements as a 6ft,
45kg woman with a 39” bust, 18” waist, and 33” hips have
caused people to label Barbie as unrealistic, distorting
young children’s idea of beauty, skin tone and body shape.
In a bid to appeal to a wider audience and promote a
more positive image, leading global toy company Mattel
has expanded its range of Barbies to now include dolls
with a broader range of features. In 2020, their ‘most
diverse doll line’ yet featured an array of more skin tones,
hair types, disabilities and body shapes than ever before.
In a time where inclusivity has never been more
important, it was not only culturally essential for Barbie
to reinvent herself, but it was also critical for the brand to
stay relevant and appeal to what will arguably be our most
conscious and empathetic generation yet.
This slight reinvention throughout the years, paired with
her brand history and cultural importance has made it so
Barbie is just as relevant to consumers today as she was
when she was first released. One thing is for certain, from
childhood to adulthood, Barbie will still be in conversations
for generations to come. CBM
to talk
about
ARE YOUR HANDS GIVING AWAY
YOUR AGE? HERE’S HOW TO
KEEP THEM LOOKING YOUNGER.
WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.
When a person asks Dr Steven
Liew, plastic surgeon from
Shape Clinic in Darlinghurst,
Sydney, how old he thinks
they are, he just looks at their hands. We are
usually so focused on treating signs of ageing on
our face and neck that we tend to forget that our
hands are often the real barometer of our age.
As we age, our hands lose volume and start to
look crepey, thanks to loss of fat and elastin and
thinning skin. Hyperpigmented areas from sun
damage and the effects of time can also appear.
In addition to sunscreen, a quality hand

cream is the first line of defence. Some of
our favourites are Campagnie de Provence
Anise Patchouli Hand Balm, $34.95, Sisley
Restorative Hand Cream, $125, MOR
Marshmallow Hand and Nail Care, $34.95 and
Emporium Classic Belladonna Hand Cream,
$28.95, La Roche-Posay Cicoplast Mains
Hand Cream, $18.95, and L’Occitane Shea
Butter Hand Cream, $47.
Peels, such as glycolic acid peels, are also
beneficial hand treatments to help improve
early hyperpigmentation. Murad offers a full
range of glycolic peels, and offers excellent
results in reducing dark spots and improving
the skin’s texture. A course of peels is
suggested every year.
Dr Liew says he rarely sees younger people
coming in to see about treating their hands.
The usual time, he says, is when they attend
to have treatments for their face and neck –
by then they often have quite severe ageing
of their hands.
Dr Liew individualises his hand treatments
based on the condition of the patient’s hands.
In his professional toolkit, he may recommend
a course of biostimulating injections with
Profhilo, which improves skin tone, texture,
hydration and elasticity, and helps to stimulate
collagen over the longer term. He may also
use dermal fillers to plump up the appearance
of the skin on the hands. Results last 6 to 12
months, depending on the individual.
If there is marked pigmentation, IPL or laser
treatments are also beneficial. Above all else,
wearing sunscreen on your hands is essential,
such as La Roche Posay Anthelios Invisible
Spray Sunscreen SPF50+, $39.95.
You can also help to camouflage the signs
of ageing hands by making sure your nails are
always well manicured. A slick of polish will
give a more pleasing and positive aesthetic
appearance to your hands. Try Revlon
Ultra HD Snap Polish, $13.95 or their Super
Lustrous Nail Enamel, $15.95, OPI Infinite
Shine Polish, $23.95 or Mavala Mini Color
Polishes, $8.95 each. CBM
TIPS FOR MASTERING EYE
MAKEUP IN YOUR 20s, 30s,
40s, 50s, 60s AND BEYOND.
Eye makeup can
be a powerful
tool in your
beauty toolkit,
helping you to
enhance your
natural features and express
your individuality and evolving
style as you journey through life.
In your 20s, experimentation
is key, so don’t be afraid to try
out different colours, textures
and finishes. As you progress
into your 30s and 40s, you
may want to focus on defining
and accentuating your eyes,
while also taking care to keep
the delicate skin around them
hydrated and smooth. Moving
into your 50s, 60s and beyond, it’s
all about embracing the ageing
process and ensuring that your
eye makeup enhances your
natural beauty and radiance.
BEAUTY
Your 20s is the perfect time to
experiment with eye makeup – you’ll
be able to pull off bold and dramatic
looks with ease!
When it comes to eye shadows, don’t
be afraid to explore vibrant shades and
complex textures. Matte shades can
be used in the crease to define and
add depth, while shimmery or metallic
finishes add a playful touch to the eyelid.
Blend your eye shadows well for a
seamless finish.
Don’t forget about your eyebrows.
Well-groomed and defined eyebrows
frame your face and complement
your eye makeup look. Experiment
with different eyebrow products and
techniques, such as powder, pencil
or pomade to find the one that suits
you best. And remember, practice
makes perfect.

BEAUTY
This is the decade for honing in on your
style and enhancing your features. When
it comes to choosing the right colours,
pick shades that complement your skin
tone and highlight your features. Opt
for more neutral tones that can blend
well with your skin and define your eyes
without looking too harsh.
For a more subdued look, use slightly
darker shades close to your lash lines
and blend the colours upwards, keeping
the darker shades in the outer corners
of your eyes. Enhance your lashes with
a mascara that adds volume and length
to make your eyes appear more open
and youthful.
It’s also important to have a solid
skincare routine in place to keep the skin
around your eyes nourished and looking
its best. Apply eye cream regularly to
maintain hydration, boost collagen and
elastin production, and help reduce the
appearance of dark circles.

BEAUTY
40S
In your 40s, fine lines and wrinkles around the
eye area may start to appear. First and foremost,
hydrate your skin to minimise the appearance of
fine lines. Consider a hyaluronic acid serum and
an anti-ageing eye cream to help plump up the
appearance of the eye area.
When it comes time to apply makeup, opt for
matte eyeshadows as they are less likely to settle
into creases and emphasise wrinkles.
A universally flattering eye look is a mediumtoned
matte shade on the eyelid, followed by a
slightly darker shade in the crease for definition.
Remember to apply a primer to your eyelids
before applying eyeshadow, as this will not only
help with smooth application but will also keep
the makeup in place throughout the day. To
further reduce any creasing, consider using a
matte-finish setting powder on the lids.
For eyeliner, go for a softer look by avoiding
harsh lines. A soft brown or grey eyeliner will
give definition without drawing attention to
fine lines or wrinkles. Using a pencil liner or
smudging a gel liner with an angled brush is a
great technique for achieving a subtle, flattering
winged eye.
Pay attention to your eyelashes and eyebrows,
as they can greatly impact your overall eye
makeup in your 40s. Use an eyelash curler to
lift and open up the eyes. A volumising mascara
will add thickness to your lashes, making your
eyes appear more youthful. When filling in your
eyebrows, use small, upward strokes with a
pencil or powder for a natural look. Gently brush
through with a spoolie to blend the product and
soften the brows.

BEAUTY
50
As you reach your 50s, you may notice more
obvious changes in your skin’s appearance as
lines and wrinkles become more etched, eye bags are more pronounced and eyelids
under-
seem to sag that little bit more. But with the
right techniques, your eye makeup game can
still be just as strong as ever.
Using an eye cream that boosts collagen
production and cell turnover is vital. Look
for ingredients like peptides, vitamin C and
antioxidants to help improve elasticity and
target signs of ageing.
When dealing with dark circles or shadows
under the eyes, use a lightweight, moisturising
and easily blendable concealer that provides
good coverage without creasing into lines. Opt
for cream or gel-based eyeshadows that won’t
settle into fine lines, and choose neutral, matte
shades that complement your skin tone.
To address thinning or sparse eyebrows,
opt for a subtle brow powder or pencil to
fill in gaps and make small, natural-looking
strokes. For eyelashes, consider curling them
to enhance the appearance of length without
weighing them down. Using a volumising,
clump-free mascara that’s easily buildable
will also help in achieving a fuller look.

60S
and beyond
Embracing your 60s and beyond doesn’t mean
giving up on eye makeup! Opt for subtle, lighter
shades and finishes that complement your skin
tone and eye colour.
Universally flattering peachy hues can work
wonders in revitalising the look of the eyes and
brightening your overall complexion.
Pay special attention to the application and
blending process, since these can greatly affect
the final look. Aim for a soft, diffused finish void
of any harsh lines.
Texture is another crucial factor to consider
when choosing eye makeup products. Look
for creamy, hydrating formulas that glide on
effortlessly and avoid products with shimmer,
as they can draw attention to imperfections.
Instead, focus on enhancing your eyes with matte
shades and understated hues, giving you the
freedom to experiment and find the perfect look
for your 60s and beyond.
Also consider the shape of your brows. A
well-defined brow with a subtle arch can lift the
appearance of your face. Fill in sparse areas with
a light, feathery touch, and use a spoolie brush
to blend and groom hairs into place. Don’t forget
to nourish your lashes, too, with a conditioning
treatment serum.
Last but not least, love the skin you’re in!
Embrace those extra lines and wrinkles as a sign
of a life well-lived and one that is ready for even
more adventures to come. CBM

CHLOE, A 32-YEAR-
OLD MUM OF TWO,
TRIED BTL’S CORE TO
HERE’S WHAT SHE
HAD TO SAY.
When I first heard
about the Core to
Floor TM series of
treatments using
BTL’s Emsculpt
NEO ® and
Emsella ® devices,
I was instantly intrigued. I’m a mum to a
4-year-old and 5-month-old and have been
struggling to regain a stronger core and
flatter abdomen. I was also suffering from
mild urinary incontinence, which I didn’t
want to put up with for the rest of my life
(I’m only 32!). The idea of a non-invasive
alternative to a mummy makeover caught
my attention. After consulting with a
practitioner trained in these treatments,
I signed up for 6 Emsella ® treatments
bi-weekly and 4 Emsculpt NEO ® sessions.
Take that, tummy!

TM
MY CORE TO FLOOR
TREATMENT WITH
EMSELLA ® AND
EMSCULPT NEO ®
Full disclosure: I’ve never known where
my pelvic floor was, so these Core to
Floor TM treatments definitely gave me a
little education! I started my treatment
with Emsella ® , which targets the pelvic
floor muscles.
Emsella ® is actually a special oversized
chair which emits high-intensity focused
electromagnetic (HIFEM ® ) technology
exactly where it’s needed. I sat on the
Emsella ® , fully clothed, for a relaxing 27
minutes as I felt a zapping-like sensation
directly on my perineum to activate and
strengthen those pelvic floor muscles. I
made it to the 100 percent level of intensity
on this first session but each practitioner will
tailor it to the individual’s threshold.
I then moved onto the Emsculpt NEO ® ,
which is designed to build muscle and
reduce fat (yes, please!). I had two warmed
paddles (that reach 40 degrees) placed on
my abdomen which delivered what felt like
vibrating pin-pricks – and awoke all the
muscles I didn’t know I had with a satisfying
zapping for 30 minutes. For anyone who
has ever had a baby, EmsculptT NEO ® felt
like the manageable contractions right
before active labour. The ones where you’re
breathing through but smiling all around
knowing what’s about to come, except I’m
envisioning a six-pack instead of baby at
the end of this!
I reached 80 percent intensity on my
first session which left me with a goal
to reach 100 percent by the end of my
treatments (again, not necessary but I’m an
overachiever like that!).
In my second combination session, I
had a few abdominal muscles that felt a bit
fatigued but it was still very comfortable.
My Emsculpt ® specialist, Amber, explained
in lay-terms that it’s because we have
awakened and activated the muscles and
now they get to work.
After each session ended, it felt like
WITH EMSCULPT NEO ®
AND EMSELLA ® , I HAVE
BEEN ABLE TO REGAIN
CONTROL OVER MY
BODY AND ACHIEVE THE
DESIRED CORE STRENGTH
AND TONE WITHOUT THE
NEED FOR SURGERY.
nothing had happened at all – just a
30-minute lay down and chat with the
gorgeous staff. Zero downtime or postworkout
pains is definitely a bonus!
Throughout the week following, I could
already feel myself holding up stronger and
slouching less.
By the third/fourth sessions, I was in a
rhythm with the program, how the machines
work and how my body responds to them.
In these weeks, I also noticed the slight
incontinence I suffered was almost nonexistent.
Thanks, Emsella ® !
Fast-forward to six weeks later and the
results really do speak for themselves. My
posture has improved, my entire abdomen
has lifted and my lower back pain gone.
I finish the treatments with an improved
confidence and a promise the results will
continue to get even better over another 6
weeks. I have loved doing these BTL Core
to Floor TM sessions. The BTL staff have
been incredibly supportive and ready for
any question I had, and the convenience
and effectiveness of these treatments are
second to none.
With Emsculpt NEO ® and Emsella ® , I
have been able to regain control over my
body and achieve the desired core strength
and tone without the need for surgery. Not
only have I seen visible improvements, it
has also been a kickstart to my weight loss
and healthier lifestyle. CBM
WHAT IS ‘CORE TO FLOOR ’
HOW DOES IT WORK
The ‘mummy makeover’ has traditionally involved • 6.7cm circumferential reduction 3
a variety of surgical procedures to try to restore
a woman’s abdominal core to its pre-baby state.
Global medical device company BTL Aesthetics
has now been able to achieve this non-invasively
by combining its award-winning technologies –
Emsculpt NEO ® or Emsculpt ® and Emsella ® – to
not only help restore that pre-baby look but
functionality as well.
Core to Floor TM is a non-invasive combination
of Emsculpt NEO ® or Emsculpt ® and Emsella ®
treatments.
EMSCULPT NEO ® is the first and only device
designed with HIFEM ® (high-intensity focused
electromagnetic) technology in combination with
synchronised radiofrequency for the revolutionary
treatment of non-invasive body shaping and
fat reduction. With over 40+ peer reviewed
publications to support the technology, the clinical
results saw an average of:
• 25% more muscles 1,2
• 30% less fat 1,2
• 19% reduction in abdominal separation 3
• Effects were comparable to a 12–16-week
exercise workout program 4 .
Emsella ® , also known as the Kegel Throne ® ,
is a game-changer for incontinence therapy
and intimate health with no downtime. Clinical
research showed:
• 81% of incontinent patients reported significant
improvement 5
• 85% improvement in overall intimate satisfaction 6
• Emsella ® is 3x more effective than
electrostimulation in weakened pelvic
floor muscles 7 .
Together, Emsculpt NEO ® and Emsella ® ’s unique
combination of two HIFEM ® technologies help to
strengthen, firm and tone the abdomen and pelvic
floor muscles, improve core strength and balance,
reduce urinary incontinence, improve diastasis recti
(abdominal muscle separation during and after
pregnancy), reduce fat in the targeted area, and
enhance intimate wellbeing.
is placed on the treatment area, effectively
freezing the targeted fat cells. The applicator
acts like a vacuum to suck the area into
position and direct the cold temperature to
the target fat cells under the skin, which are
then destroyed and eliminated naturally by
the body.
Cryolipolysis / fat-freezing treatments
currently available in Australia include
Coolsculpting, Clatuu and Cooltech.
RADIOFREQUENCY
With this method, radiofrequency (RF) energy
is used to generate heat to the underlying
fat and tissues. This targeted heat dissolves
fat cells, which are then metabolised and
eliminated from the body. The RF energy also
stimulates the production of collagen and elastin,
providing a skin smoothing and tightening effect
that can improve the look of cellulite.
RF body contouring treatments currently
available in Australia include Bodytite and
Trusculpt ID.
ULTRASOUND
High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy,
delivered through a handheld device, is delivered
at a precise depth to melt unwanted fat. Clinical
studies have shown fat reduction of up to 20 to
40% in the targeted area each session.
The latest HIFU body contouring treatments in
Australia include LIPOcel.
LASER
This method uses a type of hyperthermic (heatinducing)
laser to destroy the unwanted fat cells.
It uses a specific laser wavelength that penetrates
the skin and targets fat cells. The controlled
hyperthermic laser induces fat cell injury by
raising fat temperature to a range of 42 to 47˚C
– the ideal temperature to eliminate fat cells,
without damage to surrounding tissue. Like other
methods, there is no downtime and minimal, if
any, discomfort.
Hyperthermic body contouring treatments
currently available in Australia include Sculpsure.
MICROWAVE
Micro waves are the latest advancement in
non-surgical fat reduction. Using a specific
frequency of microwave energy, this technology
simultaneously works to remove fat and tighten
and contour the skin, firming up tissues to
reduce the look of cellulite. It is able to target
deeper layers while keeping the skin cool
and comfortable.
Onda Coolwaves by Deka is the first device
to use these smart micro waves and is available
in Australia.
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
Which
METHOD IS
BEST FOR
YOU?
Each of these non-surgical body contouring
devices works differently, but they share the
same goal: providing an effective, noninvasive
method for reducing stubborn fat
pockets. Your individual treatment plan
may depend on the specific area you wish
to target, the amount of fat you want to
reduce, and personal preference.
What
Regardless of the type of non-surgical body
contouring procedure you have, there is
typically no downtime and minimal, if any,
discomfort. Multiple areas can be treated at
once, and all skin types are generally suitable.
You can expect noticeable results around
4 to 6 weeks after treatment as the body
naturally metabolises the destroyed fat, with
optimal results typically seen around the
12-week mark. Just like liposuction surgery,
once destroyed, the fat cells will not return.
Bear in mind, though, that if you put on
weight, existing fat cells get bigger, so it’s
important to maintain a stable weight after
your treatment.
Generally, a series of treatments per
area is recommended for best results,
although some patients note a measurable
circumferential reduction in the area after the
first treatment. Most sessions take between
YOU SHOULD EXPECT
30 and 60 minutes, depending on the type of
technology used and area being treated.
While non-surgical fat reduction methods
offer numerous benefits, they are not suitable
for large-volume fat removal and it is essential
to keep realistic expectations about the results
possible. These treatments work best for those
who are close to their ideal body weight and
looking to target specific areas. Thye should not
be viewed as weight-loss treatments.
Non-surgical fat reduction is considered
safe and effective. However, like any medical
procedure, there are some risks and potential
side effects associated with these treatments.
Some of the more common side effects include
temporary swelling, redness, bruising and
skin sensitivity. Always talk to your healthcare
practitioner about the risks and complications
of non-surgical body contouring, and to see
whether it’s a good fit for your individual needs.

Tone
&
STRENGTHEN
MUSCLES
WITHOUT THE
SWEAT SESH
In addition to fat reduction, we are seeing a new
category of treatment emerging: muscle building and
toning. Non-surgical muscle sculpting devices use
electromagnetic energy to stimulate muscle contractions,
which leads to increased muscle strength and tone.
They can be used to help define the abdomen, buttocks,
arms, calves and thighs.
A minimum of 4 treatments spaced 2 to 3 days apart
is usually recommended. Results are typically seen 3 to
4 weeks after completion of the treatment plan. There is
no downtime and no pain, but be warned: it feels like an
intensive workout!
Studies have shown that after a series of sessions,
participants experienced an average increase of 16% in
muscle mass. These types of devices can also improve
mild to moderate cases of Diastasis recti (abdominal
muscle separation during pregnancy).
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Muscle building and sculpting devices use
electromagnetic stimulation to strengthen and tighten
the abs, glutes and thigh muscles through methods
of contraction and stimulation (called supramaximal
contractions) – delivering tens of thousands of muscle
contractions in a 30-minute session, which is not
humanly possible through regular exercise alone.
During a treatment session, the device’s applicator
is placed over the targeted muscle group and
electromagnetic energy is delivered to the muscle
tissue. An electromagnetic field is generated, which
stimulates the motor neuron cells of the body’s muscles,
causing the muscle to contract as it would during
movement or exercise.
When exposed to supramaximal contractions, the
muscle responds with a deep remodelling of its inner
structure, resulting in the growth of myofibrils (muscle
hypertrophy) and creation of new protein strands and
muscle fibers (muscle hyperplasia). The increased muscle
density and volume results in noticeably better muscle
definition and tone.
Muscle sculpting devices currently available in Australia
include Emsculpt and Emsculpt NEO (which also reduces
fat), teslaFORMER and truSculpt FLEX. CBM
Dietary
measures
can
slow
ageing
A MAJOR 2023 STUDY HAS
REPORTED ‘ACTING ON DIET IS ONE
OF THE MOST ACCESSIBLE WAYS TO
INTERVENE IN HUMAN AGEING’.

A
team of European researchers has identified
12 key indicators ‘which are measurable
processes that change with the ageing of
the organism and which, when manipulated
experimentally, induce an acceleration or, on the contrary,
an interruption, even a regression, of ageing’.
The authors note ‘each of these indicators should be
considered an entry point for future exploration of the
ageing process, as well as for the development of new
anti-ageing drugs’.
Assessing the new study Dr Javier Gomez Pavon, from
the leadership team at the Spanish Society of Geriatrics
and Gerontology, told Medscape.com this research
confirmed ‘diet is currently the most easily accessible
form of intervention to slow down ageing’.
The collaborative study titled ‘Hallmarks of Ageing:
An expanding universe’ – by scientists from research
institutions in Spain (Spanish National Cancer Centre,
University of Oviedo, and Barcelona Institute of Science
and Technology), England (University College London),
Germany (Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing) and
France (University of Paris) – has been published in the
international journal Cell.
In their study, the researchers propose the following
12 hallmarks of ageing: genomic instability, telomere
attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis,
disabled macroautophagy, deregulated nutrient-sensing,
mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell
exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, chronic
inflammation, and dysbiosis.
The researchers explain that ageing is driven by
hallmarks fulfilling three premises:
• their age-associated manifestation;
• the acceleration of ageing by experimentally
accentuating them; and
• the opportunity to decelerate, stop or reverse ageing
by therapeutic interventions on them.
These hallmarks ‘are interconnected among each
other, as well as to the recently proposed hallmarks of
health, which include organisational features of spatial
compartmentalisation, maintenance of homeostasis, and
adequate responses to stress’.
FEATURE
Molecular
indicators
of ageing in
mammals
An earlier 2013 study, also published in Cell, summarised
for the first time nine molecular indicators of ageing in
mammals – and served as an important ‘knowledge map
about ageing’.
Since then ‘a barometer on interest in the topic is
that approximately 300,00 articles on ageing have been
published’, noted Medscape.com – which is ‘as many as
were published during the previous century’.
In addition, almost 80 experiments have been conducted
with mammals, including humans, that confirm interventions
in the ageing process can prevent, delay, and even avoid
age-related diseases such as cancer.
With publication of the team’s new updated 2023 study,
‘spectacular progress is being made in slowing down
ageing’, commented Medscape.com, ‘with three new
molecular indicators of measurable and manageable
processes that accelerate or slow down deterioration
associated with age, as well as age-related pathologies’.
And most importantly: ‘These findings are closer than
ever to being applied in older adults.’
Study co-author Dr Maria Blasco, scientific director
at Spain’s National Cancer Research Centre and an
international leader in telomere research, noted on the
NCRC website: ‘The spectacular advances in recent years
to increase the longevity of model organisms, including
in mammals, indicate that it will be important to develop
rational strategies to intervene in human ageing.’
The new study includes a table listing 80 recent
‘experimental interventions’ with mammals (mostly mice)
which suggest it is possible to prolong life or treat ageassociated
diseases.
Some of those studies involve humans; others specifically
investigate how to delay ageing through diet.
The study’s authors emphasise: ‘Acting on the diet is one
of the most accessible ways to intervene in human ageing.’
Following the 80 ‘experimental interventions’ since the
initial 2013 research, and now the latest study verifying and
expanding the conclusions of that analysis a decade ago,
Dr Blasco summed up: ‘Now there is much more
investment, and we are closer to applying basic knowledge
to new ways of treating diseases.’

Molecular
signatures
‘indicators
of ageing’
In the new study, the researchers have identified their 12
indicators of ageing: molecular signatures which mark
the progress of a particular process – and on which it
was possible to act to prolong life.
In addition, they highlight four primary causes of
ageing: genomic instability, shortening of telomeres,
epigenetic alterations, and imbalance between protein
synthesis and degradation.
These are strongly inter-connected processes and
ageing results from their joint action – potentially
providing multiple ways to act on the physiologic
process of ageing.
And currently, diet is the most accessible form of
intervention.
Dietary interventions are related to a key indicator
of ageing: the dysregulation of the ‘nutrient sensing
mechanism’ – the network of molecular signals that alert
all mammals that food is available.
The researchers noted: ‘Nutrient sensors are
therapeutic targets for potential anti-longevity drugs,
but health benefits and lifespan extension could also be
achieved through dietary interventions.
‘However the results obtained in this line in our
species are still unclear; clinical trials based on dietary
restrictions in humans become complicated due to poor
compliance, although they suggest positive effects on
immunity and inflammation.’
FEATURE
Low disease diets
Dr Javier Gomez Pavon from the Spanish Society of Geriatrics
and Gerontology noted current evidence indicates certain
types of ‘diet in population cohort’ studies are associated with
a lower incidence and prevalence of certain diseases.
Among many contrasting examples he cited:
• the Mediterranean diet has been shown to be associated
with lower cardiovascular risk (stroke, ischemic heart
disease, dyslipidemia) and lower risk of cognitive
impairment, especially due to its vascular component;
• eating nuts (almonds, walnuts) is associated with less
dyslipidemia;
• a diet rich in fibre is also associated with less colonic
digestive pathology, such as constipation and especially
colon cancer;
• a diet low in fatty meats and rich in fruits and vegetables is
associated with less prostate, breast and colon disease;
• a diet with adequate protein intake is related to better
muscle mass at all ages;
• a diet rich in calcium products (nuts and dairy products) is
linked to better bone mass and less osteoporosis.
Dr Pavon observed: ‘At the moment, there is no study
that links any type of diet with greater longevity – although in
view of these data, it seems logical that a Mediterranean diet
rich in fruits, vegetables, vegetables with proteins of animal
origin, preferably fish or white meat, and avoiding excess red
meat and its calcium component in the form
of nuts and dairy products would be associated with better
disease-free ageing.’
Common dietar
Since diet is currently the ‘most easily
accessible element to slow down ageing’,
Dr Pavon told Medscape.com it is important
to refute many widespread myths currently
circulating about food and longevity.
One myth regarding dairy products is that
yoghurt is not useful for the elderly because
they do not have adequate enzymes to
digest it, and it is only for children or young
people who are growing.
Dr Pavon retorted: ‘It is not true. Dairy
products are not important for their proteins
but for their calcium and vitamin D content
– fundamental elements at all ages, but
especially in ageing, where there is bone loss
secondary to ageing itself and an increased
risk of osteoporosis and associated
fractures. Especially in the elderly, the tragic
hip fracture is associated with high morbidity
and mortality.’
Another common myth it that ‘it is not
good to eat fruit with meals’.
Dr Pavon answered: ‘Due to its rich
content in antioxidants and vitamins, it is a
fundamental food of the Mediterranean diet.
Antioxidants of any type (nuts, vegetables,
fruits) are undoubtedly the most important
components against pathological ageing
(stroke, myocardial infarction, dementia).
‘It may be true that they can be more
easily digested if they are eaten outside of

y myths
meals, but the important thing is that they
be eaten whenever.’
A further common myth is the ‘fact’ that
‘sugars in legumes and bread are harmful’.
Dr Pavon answered: ‘Again it is not true.
In addition to sugar, legumes contain fibre
and other very important antioxidants, just
like bread. The difference is the amount, as
in all food.
‘On the contrary, refined sugars, such
as pastries, sugary drinks, etc, should be
avoided, since they are directly related to
cardiovascular disease and obesity.’
Dr Pavon also commented: ‘As for the
popular saying ‘Do not even try meat’, it is
not sound since red meat and fish, including
oily fish, are rich in protein and vitamin B as
well as iron, and therefore are necessary.
‘As always, it is the amount that should
be limited, especially red meat, not so much
oily fish. I would recommend reducing red
meat and replacing it with white meat, since
the former are rich in saturated fats that
produce more cholesterol.’
Dr Pavon also cautioned about wine
consumption, noting: ‘Careful. Wine in
small quantities, a glass at lunch and dinner,
is beneficial due to its antioxidant power;
but at more than these amounts, the
negative power of alcohol predominates
over its benefits.’
Ageing indicator
‘entry points’
The new European study expands the previous study’s list
of accepted ageing indicators from nine to 12 ‘measurable
processes that change with the ageing of the organism’ –
and which, when manipulated experimentally, induce an
acceleration or, on the contrary, an interruption or even a
regression of ageing.
The authors concluded: ‘Each of these indicators should
be considered an entry point for future exploration of the
ageing process’.
Co-author Dr Blasco explained that, where a decade
ago it was recognised telomere shortening was at the
origin of age-related diseases, ‘it is now emphasised that
the generation of mouse models with short telomeres has
shown telomeric wasting is at the origin of prevalent ageassociated
diseases, such as pulmonary and renal fibrosis.’
The 2023 study reviews new interventions to delay
ageing and age-related diseases to act on telomeres.
Dr Blasco said: ‘For example, the activation of
Latest research ON LO
HIIT

W-VOLUME
IT’S OFFICIAL. RESEARCH
PROVES LOW-VOLUME HIGH
INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING
INVOLVING LESS THAN 15 MINUTES
CAN INDUCE EVEN GREATER
IMPROVEMENTS IN OVERALL
HEALTH AND FITNESS.
Scientists and exercise physiologists have
devoted years of research to prove the benefits
of short bursts of intensive exercise aka high
intensity interval training (HIIT). Recently, researchers
have been studying whether shorter variations of HIIT,
involving less than 15 minutes of high intensity exercise
per session also improve health.
A review paper* published in the Journal of
Physiology collated and critically appraised over a
decade’s worth of research on the topic of this
so-called low-volume HIIT for health. Here’s what
the authors found:
‘The findings from recent trials suggest that
low-volume HIIT can induce similar, and at times
greater, improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness,
glucose control, blood pressure and cardiac function
when compared to more traditional forms of
aerobic exercise training including high-volume
HIIT and moderate intensity continuous training,
despite requiring less time commitment and lower
energy expenditure.
‘… There is an ever-growing body of evidence
supporting the utility of low-volume HIIT for improving
cardiometabolic health in both clinical and general
populations. The available evidence from randomised
trials indicates that when compared to higher
volume continuous training, low-volume HIIT leads
to similar, and sometimes greater, cardiometabolic
improvements despite lower energy expenditure and
time requirement. Further studies involving long-term
interventions are required to determine whether lowvolume
HIIT is sustainable in the long-term.’
WELLNESS
Why
LOW-
VOLUME
HIIT
WORKS
Low-volume HIIT, typically involving less than 15
minutes of high-intensity exercise per session,
is being increasingly investigated in healthy and
clinical populations due to its time-efficient nature
and purported health benefits.
The current World Health Organisation (WHO)
physical activity guidelines (150 to 300 minutes of
moderate activity per week or 75 to 100 minutes of
vigorous activity per week) may be unattainable
for a large portion of the population who are
time-poor due to family or work commitments.
This hypothesis is supported by the increasing
rates of physical inactivity amongst adults in highincome
countries.
The findings of the Journal of Physiology review
show that low-volume HIIT (typically involving less
than 20 minutes total exercise time – inclusive
of warm up and cool down) yields comparable
improvements to interventions meeting the current
guidelines despite requiring significantly less time.
Beyond its effect on metabolic health, the new
review reported that low-volume HIIT can also
improve heart function and arterial health.
‘While the WHO guidelines may serve their
purpose at a populational level, individualised and
tailored low-volume HIIT interventions delivered by
appropriately trained exercise professionals may
be more effective at an individual level, especially
for time-poor individuals,’ says Dr Angelo Sabag,
corresponding author of the study.
‘This research is especially important now as
people are looking for new and exciting ways to
engage in regular exercise.’
HIIT
EFFECTIVE
FOR FAT
LOSS?

Exercise scientists previously believed that ‘steady state’ cardio exercise was superior for fat loss because relatively
more fat is used by the body as fuel at lower exercise intensities than at higher intensities. It’s now been shown
there are several reasons HIIT may be more effective for fat loss compared to traditional steady-state cardio.
Firstly, HIIT increases your metabolic rate for hours after your workout, a phenomenon known as the afterburn
effect, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). The intense nature of the exercise stimulates your
body to repair and rebuild muscles, which requires extra energy from stored fat. As a result, you continue to burn
calories even when at rest post workout.
In addition, HIIT can help improve insulin sensitivity, which plays a crucial role in fat loss and overall health. Better
insulin sensitivity means your body can process carbohydrates more efficiently, using them for energy and muscle
growth instead of storing them as fat. This ultimately helps with managing body weight and reducing fat storage.
Moreover, HIIT has been shown to enhance fat oxidation during workouts, especially when compared to
traditional steady-state cardio. This means that a greater proportion of the energy used during exercise comes from
fat stores, leading to a more significant reduction in body fat percentage over time.
Lastly, HIIT workouts tend to be shorter in duration, making them more time-efficient. You can get the same,
if not better, results in a 20-minute HIIT session compared to an hour of steady-state cardio. This can be highly
motivating and easier to incorporate into your busy lifestyle, increasing the likelihood of being consistent and
achieving long-term fat loss goals. CBM
THE
POWER
OF
beauty
SLEEP
IT’S NOT CALLED
“BEAUTY SLEEP” FOR
NOTHING. HERE’S THE
LOWDOWN ON WHY
A QUALITY NIGHT’S
SLEEP IS ESSENTIAL
FOR YOUR HEALTH,
WELLBEING AND
COMPLEXION.
A
good night’s sleep
offers numerous
health and beauty
benefits. Studies have
shown that getting
adequate sleep can sharpen cognitive
skills, improve your mood and reduce
the likelihood of various chronic
illnesses. Sleep also plays a vital role
in your beauty regimen. In fact, the
term “beauty sleep” stems from the
undeniable impact that rest has on
your appearance, promoting smoother,
radiant skin and brighter eyes.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 113

WELLNESS
WHY SLEEP IS
VITALLY IMPORTANT
TO YOUR HEALTH
A good night’s sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining
your overall health and wellbeing. As an adult, you need
around 7-9 hours of sleep per night to function at your
best. Consistently getting quality sleep offers numerous
benefits for your physical and mental health.
For starters, sleep helps your body repair itself. During
deep sleep, your body produces hormones that aid in
cell repair and growth. These hormones are essential
for repairing muscles, tissues and organs, as well as
maintaining a strong immune system. Getting insufficient
sleep can weaken your immune system, making you
more susceptible to infections and diseases.
Sleep also has a significant impact on your heart
health. During the non-REM phase of sleep, your blood
pressure and heart rate fall, allowing your heart and
circulatory system to rest. Studies have shown that sleep
deprivation increases the risk of heart disease, high
blood pressure and stroke.
Another important aspect of sleep is its role in
managing stress. Quality sleep is a powerful stressreliever
that improves concentration, regulates mood,
and sharpens judgment and decision-making. On the
other hand, lack of sleep can reduce your ability to cope
with stressful situations, leading to increased cortisol
levels and other negative health implications.
IMPACT OF QUALITY SLEEP ON
YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Sleep is significantly related to mental health, and a consistent quality sleep
routine can help reduce anxiety and depression levels. Insufficient sleep can cause
heightened stress responses, amplifying negative emotions and making coping
with daily stressors more challenging.
One Australian study found that people who have less than 5 hours sleep a
night might be at higher risk of mental illness. According to a study at the
University of Michigan in the US, depression rates are 40 times higher for patients
with insomnia. And – here’s a surprising one – a good night’s sleep makes us
happier than a 50% salary increase, according to the UK’s National Centre for
Social Research.
SLEEP AND
WEIGHT GAIN
A good night’s sleep also plays a crucial role in
maintaining a healthy weight. When you don’t get
enough sleep, your body’s hormonal balance gets
disrupted, which can contribute to weight gain.
Specifically, two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, are
affected by the amount of sleep you get.
Leptin is known as the “satiety hormone,” signalling
to your brain that you’re full and it’s time to stop
eating. On the other hand, ghrelin is the “hunger
hormone”, which stimulates your appetite. When
you are sleep-deprived, your leptin levels decrease
and ghrelin levels increase, making you feel hungrier
than usual.
Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to
increased rates of obesity and diabetes, according
to research at the UK’s University of Warwick, which
found that adults who get less than seven hours of
sleep a night are twice as likely to become obese.
The quality of sleep is just as important as the
quantity. Ensure that you maintain a consistent sleep
schedule, create an environment conducive to sleep,
and minimise distractions such as electronic devices.
HOW SLEEP
IMPACTS YOUR
SKIN
A good night’s sleep is essential for your
overall health, and it also plays a crucial role in
maintaining the health and beauty of your skin.
During sleep, your body goes through various
repair processes, which help rejuvenate your
skin and provide you with that coveted glow.
Not getting enough sleep cuts that crucial
repair time short, which can wreak havoc on
the complexion.
One of the primary benefits of sleep is
related to your skin’s hydration. While you
sleep, your skin has the opportunity to balance
its hydration levels, leading to a healthy and
more radiant complexion. Consequently,
insufficient sleep can result in sallow skin and
dark circles under your eyes due to decreased
blood flow and hydration.
Sleep also plays a vital role in collagen
production. Collagen is a protein responsible
for maintaining the elasticity and firmness
of your skin. During deep sleep, your body
produces growth hormones, which play a
key role in healing cells and tissues throughout
the body, including skin. This process helps
keep fine lines, wrinkles and sagging at bay,
and helps to keep your skin looking youthful
and vibrant.
Better blood flow is also associated with
quality sleep. Enhanced blood flow delivers
essential nutrients and oxygen to your skin,
promoting cell turnover and helping to
prevent dullness.
BEDTIME
BEAUTY
ROUTINES
A quality night-time skincare routine
can support your skin’s natural repair
processes. As your skin undergoes
regeneration during sleep, using the
right skincare products can help lock
in moisture, support cellular turnover
and provide essential nutrients.
HOW TO HAVE A
BETTER SLEEP
Tips from sleep science specialist
Dr Carmel Harrington
DURING THE DAY
Get up at the same time every day.
Exercise for at least 20 minutes per day
(a walk at lunchtime is good)
Make sure you deal with the issues of the day during the
day and not when you get into bed. In the early evening
spend no more than 20 minutes writing out events of the
day that are of concern along with potential solutions.
Close the book and put it away.
WHAT TO AVOID
Sleeping in for more than an hour past your
regular wake-up time on the weekends.
Having caffeine after midday.
Drinking alcohol.
Sleeping during the day (a nap of 20 minutes is okay).
AT NIGHT
Set an alarm one hour before your
proposed bedtime and at that time:
Turn off all technology.
Dim the lighting in the room.
Have a warm to hot shower.
Perform some relaxation exercise or
a simple meditation.
WHAT TO AVOID
Bright surroundings (fluorescent lights, bright LED TVs,
computers, etc) close to bedtime as this will stop the
body from producing the right sleep hormones and will
make falling asleep and staying asleep difficult.
Eating a large meal within three hours of bedtime.
Exercising within three hours of bedtime
(this will alert the body).
