tips and tricks so you can sparkle throughout the holidays, while our ‘Summer
We also give you the heads up on hair trends and our favourite products to summerproof
your hair on p106, as well as examine the increasingly compelling link between
scalp and hair health (p102).
face treatments for 2024 – including information on new treatments using
injectable biostimulators and facial muscle stimulation (p94). If you’re considering a
more invasive procedure, now’s a good time to brush up on the new cosmetic surgery
guidelines in Australia. Our detailed report on p120 tells you what you need to know
Plus, in our feature report on ‘Ozempic: A New Shot at Weight Los’ on p52, we
delve into the science behind the conversation-provoking semaglutide drugs Ozempic
and Wegovy. Is there a trade-off for this new ‘wonder’ drug?
To help get you get in the festive spirit, we’ve also curated our most-coveted luxe list
of beauty products. Turn to our Editor’s Faves on p128 for inspiration on some truly
‘I had so much fun stepping into beauty
magic and working with Charlotte and her
muses to bring this campaign to life,’ said
Sir Elton.
‘When you get people coming together like
this, it’s like an express train. This campaign
is certainly going to bring the sparkle, joy
and glamour this holiday season, all while
supporting my Foundation’s life-saving work.’
FOUNDER OF BLOW BAR CO
SCOOPS TWO NATIONAL AWARDS
Leigh Dole, founder and director
of Blow Bar Co, has been announced
as the winner of the ‘One to Watch’
Award and ‘Service Business
of the Year’ Award at the 2023
AusMumpreneur Awards.
The AusMumpreneur Awards
celebrates and recognises mothers
(Leigh has four daughters) in business
achieving outstanding success in areas
such as business excellence, product
development, customer service and
digital innovation.
After noticing a gap in the market
for a non-traditional hair salon that
focused on creating a personalised
beauty experience, Blow Bar is
Australia’s original blow dry bar
where women can come to get
a blow dry or makeup, with a
side of bubbles and a cheese
board to match.
‘I launched my very first salon when
I was 17, however I realised traditional
cuts and colours weren’t for me, so
took a break from the industry to
rediscover my passion which was the
styling and ‘feelgood’ elements of
beauty,’ shares Leigh.
Blow Bar Co provides a place for
women to connect, celebrate and
empower one another.
‘I’ve always thrived on human
connection and making people feel
and look good – whether it’s for a job
interview, formal, a wedding, or just
a weekday blowout – and as a
sanctuary for women, we strive to
deliver an affordable beauty offering
to all women,’ she adds.
With venues located in Bronte,
Balmain and Sydney CBD (David
Jones), it combines hair styling with
makeup and bubbles and sends
clients on their way with confidence.
KMART OWN-BRAND COSMETICS
OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED CRUELTY-FREE
Kmart Australia and Cruelty Free
International – the leading organisation
working to end animal testing – recently
announced that all of Kmart’s ownbrand
cosmetic and personal care
products have been approved as
cruelty free under the Leaping Bunny
Programme.
The approval marks an Australian
retail first – Kmart are the first largescale
Australian retailer to obtain
Leaping Bunny approval, with all
products across the OXX and ANKO
brands within the beauty category
approved. This accreditation forms
part of Kmart’s people and planet
program and showcases the retailers
ongoing commitment to creating
positive change.
John Gualtieri, Kmart & Target Chief
Executive Officer said: ‘As a largescale
retailer we know that we have
a responsibility to the many lives we
touch, including those of our muchloved
animals. We are delighted to have
received cruelty-free approval under the
Leaping Bunny Programme, as it marks
an important and significant step for our
Kmart teams, who have been working
incredibly hard over the last few years
on incorporating sustainability and
positive change into our products.’
The Cruelty Free International
Leaping Bunny Programme is the
globally recognised gold standard for
cruelty-free cosmetics, personal care,
household and cleaning products,
with requirements that go above
and beyond laws restricting animal
testing. For Kmart to be approved,
the programme had to forensically
investigate its entire supply chain,
including all raw materials and
individual ingredients.
The Leaping Bunny Programme
is the only cruelty-free approval that
requires a supplier monitoring
system to be implemented by the
brand, with a supply chain review right
down to ingredient manufacturer
level, adherence to a fixed cut-off
date policy and acceptance of
ongoing independent audits to
ensure compliance.
GET EXTRA
Sunscreen
SERIOUS
ABOUT
BEAUTY
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer
in the world. Skin cancer accounts for the largest
number of cancers diagnosed in Australia each year.
Daily sunscreen use, all year round, is therefore a
non-negotiable but especially in summer when we
tend to spend more time outdoors.
Sunscreen is hands-down the most important
skincare and anti-ageing product you will ever own.
Wearing sunscreen daily will help defend your skin
against damaging UVB and UVA rays and will help
keep premature ageing at bay.
When selecting a sunscreen, try a physical
sunscreen over a chemical-based one. Physical
sunscreens contain active mineral ingredients, such
as micronised zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which
work by sitting on top of the skin to block damaging
UV rays. They are naturally broad spectrum,
meaning they protect against both UVA and UVB
rays and, unlike some chemical sunscreens, aren’t
likely to irritate sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Aim for a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of
30 and apply 20 minutes before going outdoors. It’s
important to reapply every two hours, regardless of
SPF rating. Apply at least one teaspoon per limb,
one for the front of the body, one for the back and
one for the head. A full body application for an
adult should be at least 35mL or seven teaspoons.
Protect your precious skin further by seeking
shade when outside, covering up (bonus points
for wearing UPF 50+ sun protective clothing),
sunglasses with UV protection and a wide-brimmed
hat. We are loving the Tina M Copenhagen Maui
Wide Brim Fedora Hat, $85, which is lightweight,
breathable, crush-resistant, wind-resistant, travelfriendly
and UPF 50+ rated.

Moisturiser
LIGHTEN UP YOUR
Warmer months don’t deplete your natural
moisture nearly as much as winter, but
it’s still necessary to make sure your skin’s
moisture levels are maintained. Ditch the
heavy moisturiser you used in winter and
use a lightweight formulation instead. Look
for hyaluronic-acid based moisturisers,
which work to increase your skin’s hydration
levels without feeing heavy or greasy on
your skin.
A weekly hydrating mask can help
sun-stressed skin by adding moisture and
blocking water loss, leaving you, and your
skin, feeling refreshed and fabulous.
How to
KEEP SKIN
HYDRATED,
WITHOUT
THE OIL SLICK
In addition to the all-important hyaluronic acid (a
potent moisturiser capable of holding many times
its weight in water), adding a Vitamin C serum to
your skincare repertoire will not only help to brighten
your complexion but also provide some antioxidant
protection. By strengthening the skin barrier, it helps
retain hydration without promoting oil production.
Need an immediate skin pick-me-up? A face mist
can work wonders to revitalise your skin and keep
you cool calm and collected. Use it as needed to stay
fresh as a daisy throughout those long summer days.

BREAKOUTS
All that humidity, sweat and extra oil
production can easily lead to clogged
pores and create an ideal breeding
ground for increased bacteria on
your face, resulting in pimples and
breakouts. Keep your face clean with
a gentle cleanser to remove excess
oil, sweat and grime, opt for oil-free
and non-comedogenic sunscreen,
skincare and makeup, and be sure
to wash hats and headwear before
wearing them again.
For serious damage control, look
for acne-fighting ingredients such
as salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy
acids. Both are exfoliants that help
to unclog pores by breaking down
and removing dead skin cells and
excess oil. Weekly complexionclearing
masks also help to absorb
excess surface oil and keep pores
grime-free.
SPOT!
Hyperpigmentation in any of its forms – including
age spots, freckles and melasma – is a difficult beast
to control any time of the year, but especially during
summer. Hyperpigmentation is usually a result of sun
exposure, genetics and/or hormonal imbalances.
Wearing sunscreen is the best defence against
hyperpigmentation. Research also shows that a high
concentration of Vitamin C can significantly improve
brown spots. Vitamin A, in the form of stabilised retinol,
is also beneficial. It enables surface hyperpigmented
cells to be sloughed off, as well as helping to reduce
melanin production. Vitamin B3/Niacinamide, another
ingredient commonly found in specific pigmentationfighting
skincare products, helps prevent transfer
of the melanin pigment from the melanocyte to
the keratinocyte in the epidermis. A multi-pronged
approach is usually the best way to help tackle and
manage the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
Meet
the next
generation
of retinol
iS CLINICAL HAS JUST LAUNCHED ITS
FIRST-EVER RETINOL PRODUCT,
RETINOL+ EMULSION, WHICH IS CLINICALLY
PROVEN TO HELP SMOOTH AND BRIGHTEN SKIN.
After 20+ years of skincare formulating,
award-winning medical-grade
skincare brand iS Clinical has
launched a breakthrough retinol formulation:
Retinol+ Emulsion.
Available in 0.3 and 1.0 strengths, these
highly active, fast-acting formulas combine an
extraordinary new form of retinol with a proprietary
blend of Bakuchiol, powerful botanical boosters,
antioxidants and iS Clinical’s own Extremeozymes ® ,
for an elevated retinol experience, no matter your
skin’s sensitivity level.
Both the Retinol+ Emulsion 0.3 and 1.0 versions
are supported by several independent clinical
studies, which demonstrate that both formulas are
clinically proven to encourage the skin’s youthful
appearance, radiance, smoothness, and more.

HOW RETINOL+
EMULSION WORKS
The Retinol+ Emulsions are designed to
boost the inherent anti-ageing capabilities
of retinol with a host of carefully curated
ingredients that work together to reduce the
appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles,
even skin tone and texture, and promote a
smooth, radiant complexion.
Importantly, iS Clinical’s Retinol+ Emulsions
are designed to be well tolerated by the skin,
minimising or all together avoiding the usual
peeling and skin irritation often experienced
with retinol use.
To achieve this, iS Clinical introduces a
clinically advanced technology featuring a
retinol of botanical origin, encapsulated with
bio-identical lipids, to allow for precise delivery
to the skin while also improving its resilience.
SKIN
WHAT’S IN IT?
• Bakuchiol: an ingredient from the Psoralea
Corylifolioa (babchi) plant that is even more
powerful when combined with retinol, as it shares
its benefits, but with higher skin tolerability.
• Rice Bran Extract, Rosemary Extract and
Vitamin E: creating a uniquely formulated
antioxidant combination that functions as a
natural preservative system, while increasing the
potency of retinol activity by 32%.
• Extremozyme ® technology: a proprietary
combination of extremophilic enzymes that
combat dehydration, radiation, heat, cold and
free radical damage, ultimately working to help
revitalise the foundation of healthy-looking skin.
• Ectoin: an Extremozyme ® pioneered by iS
Clinical, ectoin is found in several plants thriving
in high-salt environments, including the Dead Sea,
salty deserts and marine environments.
• Shea Butter: a skin emollient from the nut of the
Karite tree in West Africa. Contains fatty acids
which lessen irritation and soothe skin.
• Vitamin C: in a stabilised, bio-available form,
which offers antioxidant activity against
environmental stresses, brightening and providing
protection from photoageing.
• Colloidal Gold: a gold complexed into colloidal
form, which is biologically usable by the body and
helps plump the complexion.
• Tripeptide-1 (Copper Tripeptide-1): an effective
bio-identical ingredient that is clinically proven
to help diminish signs of premature ageing and
helps to visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles
over time.
• Poria Cocos Extract: a mushroom that has
been used as an age-defying ingredient in
traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of
years and is known for its ability to reduce the
appearance of ageing skin while providing a
plumping action. CBM

really
work?
WE INTERVIEWED
DR LEONA YIP, A SPECIALIST
DERMATOLOGIST BASED
IN BRISBANE, TO LEARN
MORE ABOUT THE SKIN’S
AGEING PROCESS AND
WHETHER SKINCARE CAN
SLOW IT DOWN.
La Roche-Posay Anthelios
Invisible Spray SPF 50+, $39.95

CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW
THE SKIN AGES AND WHAT
FACTORS INFLUENCE THIS
PROCESS?
As we age, a few things happen to
our skin. Most notably, we lose 25% of
skin collagen through natural ageing
processes by the time we hit our mid-
40s, which manifests as wrinkles and
loss of elasticity. Secondly, our skin
becomes drier over time as we lose the
ability to produce natural skin oils and
hyaluronic acid which draws water into
the skin. Thirdly, our skin renewal rate
slows down; dead skin cells stay on the
skin surface longer, making our skin
look duller.
Skin ageing is further accelerated by
exposure to environmental aggressors,
such as excessive sun exposure,
cigarette smoking and pollution,
through a process called senescence.
This process produces “zombie cells”,
which are mutated skin cells damaged
by environmental aggressors that
not only refuse to die but also infect
surrounding healthy skin cells to drive
more premature skin ageing changes.
DOES SKINCARE PLAY A ROLE IN STOPPING
THE AGEING PROCESS?
BEAUTY
While skincare may not halt the ageing process, it can certainly slow
down the signs of ageing. Looking younger for our age is definitely
achievable with quality anti-ageing skincare.
Product formulation and ingredients are equally important to
determine efficacy, so it is important to choose products backed by
science and research.
Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are two of the most established
anti-ageing ingredients. Think of niacinamide (vitamin B3) as a
multitasker: it stimulates collagen production; helps to improve
skin pigmentation; aids in maintaining a healthy skin barrier by
preventing water loss and keeping skin irritants at bay; and has
an anti-inflammatory effect which also makes it suitable for rosacea
sufferers. Niacinamide is suitable for all skin types. It is also
beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin as it helps to balance
oil production.
Hyaluronic acid is a very effective skin hydration booster that helps
improve skin plumpness and therefore reduces the appearance of
fine lines and wrinkles. It also stimulates collagen production.
A relatively unsung benefit of niacinamide and hyaluronic acid
is that they both fight free radicals, helping to protect against
environment aggressors and prevent premature ageing.
SHOULD YOUNGER PEOPLE
CONSIDER USING ANTI-AGEING
PRODUCTS AS A PREVENTATIVE
MEASURE?
Establishing an anti-ageing skincare routine from
your early 20s is ideal as this is when collagen
starts to degenerate. I consider using anti-ageing
products at this age a long-term investment.
DO YOU BELIEVE SKINCARE
PRODUCTS AVAILABLE TODAY
ARE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN
THOSE AVAILABLE FIVE OR 10
YEARS AGO?
Yes, skincare science has evolved significantly
over the past 5-10 years, with more research and
scientific innovations that have greatly improved
the effectiveness of the products available today.
They give better results and offer increased
tolerability.

OZEMPIC
a new
shot at
weight
loss
OZEMPIC AND WEGOVY
ARE BEING HERALDED AS
‘REVOLUTIONARY’
WEIGHT-LOSS DRUGS
DISRUPTING THE ENTIRE
WEIGHT LOSS INDUSTRY,
BUT IS THERE A TRADE-OFF?
WE DELVE INTO THE
SCIENCE BEHIND
SEMAGLUTIDE DRUGS.

Semaglutide, an injection
medication initially used
for regulating blood sugar
levels in Type 2 diabetes
patients, is being hailed around
the world as a weight loss “wonder
drug” – just ask Elon Musk, who
credits the blockbuster drug for his
recent weight loss.
Known under the brand names
Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro,
semaglutide has generated
excitement in the pharmaceutical
and medical industries, all but
promising a new frontier in tackling
obesity. Data from Novo Nordisk,
the manufacturers of Ozempic,
suggests that US healthcare
providers were writing around
60,000 new weekly prescriptions for
the drug as of April 2023.
Its rising popularity began after
the FDA approved Wegovy, a
higher-dose version of Ozempic,
as a treatment for chronic obesity
in June 2021. Since then, whispers
are rife on the red carpets that a
growing number of celebrities and
influencers are taking the drug offlabel
for rapid weight loss.
Despite semaglutide’s optimistic
headlines around the globe,
rumoured uptake in Hollywood and
impressive clinical trial results (more
on that later), the drug is not without
its controversies. Many remain
cautious about side effects and
the implications of its widespread
off-label use – including accessibility
to those medically in need and a
possible link to cancer, as well as its
potential impact on societal beauty
standards and perpetuation of
unattainable ideals.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 53

WHAT IS
SEMAGLUTIDE?
FEATURE
Semaglutide is a glucagon-like
peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue, which
is approved for treating type 2
diabetes in adults and mitigating
cardiovascular risks in individuals
with both type 2 diabetes and heart
disease. It is delivered through
subcutaneous (under the skin)
injections at doses up to 1mg
once a week.
This medication imitates the
natural hormone GLP-1, which
slows down stomach activity and
helps individuals feel full for a more
extended period. Additionally, it
seems to impact the way the brain
regulates appetite.
In an earlier study to observe
the ‘effects of GLP-1 on appetite
and weight’, US scientists at the
Mayo Clinic explained that GLP-1
originates from the pre-proglucagon
gene expressed in various parts
of the body, such as the pancreas,
intestines, and specific neurons in
the brain.
They described how GLP-1 ‘is of
relevance to appetite and weight
maintenance because it has actions
on the gastrointestinal tract as well
as the direct regulation of appetite.
It delays gastric emptying and gut
motility in humans. In addition,
interventricular injections of GLP-1
inhibit food intake, independent of
the presence of food in the stomach
or gastric emptying.’
The Mayo Clinic researchers
also highlighted that GLP-1, when
administered peripherally, impacts
central feeding regulation. Thus,
the combined actions of GLP-1 in
the gut and brain, interacting with
central and peripheral receptors,
seem to be responsible for the
hormone’s effect on satiety.
SHEDDING 16%
BODY WEIGHT
In a major US clinical trial conducted
at the University of Pennsylvania,
researchers examined 611
participants to explore the effects
of semaglutide drug, Wegovy. The
research focused on adults who
were overweight or dealing with
obesity but had no diabetes.
In the study, the overweight or
obese volunteers without diabetes
were injected once-weekly with
either 2.4mg of subcutaneous
semaglutide (407 volunteers) or
a placebo (204 volunteers) for 68
weeks to determine the effect
on body weight when added to
intensive behavioural therapy with
an initial low-calorie diet.
Alongside these injections, all
participants followed an intensive
behavioral therapy program which
included an initial 8-week very lowcalorie
diet that transitioned to a lowcalorie
diet, weekly exercise routines
scaling from 100 to 200 minutes, and
30 visits from a dietitian.
The results, published in
the renowned Journal of the
American Medical Association
(JAMA), revealed a remarkable
difference in weight loss between
the two groups. Those receiving
semaglutide injections experienced
a 16.0% decrease in body weight,
averaging a loss of 16.8kg, whereas
the placebo group only saw a
5.7% reduction. This notable
difference was determined to be
statistically significant.
The study authors highlighted
the importance of semaglutide
as a supplementary treatment
alongside an intensive therapy
program and an initial low-calorie
diet. This combined approach
led to significantly increased
weight loss among overweight and
obese adults.
Additionally, they emphasised
the benefits of weight loss in terms
of improving cardio-metabolic
risk factors: ‘Weight loss improves
cardio-metabolic risk factors in
people with overweight or obesity.
Intensive lifestyle intervention and
pharmacotherapy are the most
effective non-invasive weight
loss approaches.’

A NEW FRONTIER
IN WEIGHT
MANAGEMENT
Commenting on the University of
Pennsylvania study of semaglutide,
The Sydney Morning Herald
declared: ‘The emergence of the
new drug, marketed locally as
Wegovy, promises to revolutionise
weight-loss treatments.’
Professor Brian Oldfield, a leading
obesity researcher at Monash
University, told SMH: ‘As these
drugs become more effective and
available, it will be harder for people
to ignore them.’
Although governments worldwide
have invested significantly in public
health campaigns to promote
healthy eating and exercise, these
efforts have not caused significant
weight loss.
‘While healthy eating and physical
activity are vital for good health,
decades of evidence suggest they
simply do not lead to large amounts
of weight loss,’ said Prof Oldfield.
‘They are not enough by themselves.
They typically give a 3-5% reduction
in body weight.’
As such, introducing a new
drug like Wegovy could make a
significant difference in the fight
against obesity.
Tiffany Petre, director of the
Obesity Collective, shared a similar
sentiment, expressing her hope
that semaglutide drugs like Wegovy
will change conversations about
obesity in society. ‘People with
obesity haven’t been able to get
appropriate healthcare. Now
there is something on the market,’
she said.
RISKS AND
CONTROVERSIES
Ozempic and Wegovy’s rise
in popularity have also been
accompanied by various claims and
controversies surrounding its usage
and side effects.
Commonly reported side effects
include reflux, nausea, vomiting,
constipation, diarrhoea and
abdominal pain. In some instances,
more serious side effects can occur,
such as severe allergic reactions,
kidney problems, pancreatitis and
diabetic retinopathy.
Ozempic has also been linked
to an increased risk of developing
thyroid cancer in animal studies.
Although there is currently no
definitive evidence that the
medication poses a similar risk in
humans, it has resulted in a warning
on the drug label.
There is also the question of
what happens to your body after
stopping Ozempic or Wegovy. Like
many medications, semaglutide only
works for as long it’s used. As soon
as you stop taking it, any weight
loss is likely to come back. More
worryingly, if you abruptly stop using
it, the amount of glucose in your
body can spike due to sudden shifts
in blood sugar levels and may cause
serious medical complications.
Concerns have also been
raised about the massive uptake
in individuals who do not have
diabetes or obesity and are using
the drug for “quick fix” weight loss.
This hyper-demand for off-label
weight loss – seemingly reserved
for the wealthy elite who can afford
paying prices of up to US$1,300 a
www.cosbeauty.com.au 55

FEATURE
month – has led to a shortage of
semaglutide medications for people
who medically need them.
‘We’ve had instances where
patients have not been able to get
some of their current medications
for their diabetes, because there is a
shortage of those due to the uptick
of patients using this off label for
weight loss,’ says Dr Andrew Straw,
associate professor of pharmacy
practice at Cedarville University in
the US.
Dr Steven Heymsfield, a
professor of metabolism and body
composition at Louisiana State
University in the US, agrees that
unintended use, as opposed to
prioritising semaglutide for treating
chronic obesity, is worrying.
‘I’m very concerned about this
rage for these GLP-1 agonists,’ he
told Verywellhealth.com. ‘These
drugs should be used for people
who really need them and have
health risks from obesity who’ve
tried many times to lose weight,
and not by Hollywood actors and
actresses who are trying to lose
10 pounds.’
Further, Dr Paul Jarrod Frank,
a dermatologic surgeon in New
York, warns that off-label use of
semaglutide may come with more
than just weight loss. ‘Using this
drug to maintain a body weight
that is low for one’s frame is not
the intended purpose and is most
likely a dangerous and unsustainable
use of the medication,’ he told
Allure.com.
MALNUTRITION &
‘OZEMPIC FACE’
Another risk of Ozempic use is
malnutrition. Dr Andrew Wong, an
internal medicine specialist in the
US, told healthnews.com: ‘Some
patients who have been taking
Ozempic for a while have reported
symptoms of eating disorders, such
as abnormal eating patterns, meal
skipping and late-night munching.
Others lost the elasticity and the
collagen in the muscles in the
face, which may be a symptom of
malnourishment.’
US plastic surgeons have reported
an increase in patients seeking
treatment for ‘Ozempic face’ and
‘Ozempic body’ – the loose, sagging
skin caused by rapidly losing weight
after taking Ozempic and Wegovy.
Semaglutide drugs themselves
do not cause loose skin, but it can
cause patients to lose weight faster
than other forms of weight-loss
methods, including bariatric surgery.
Dr Paul Jarrod Frank first coined
the term ‘Ozempic face’ after many
of his middle-aged patients would
come in with gaunt faces after
losing a lot of body weight in a short
period of time while on the weightloss
drug.
Dr Dhaval Bhanusali, a NY
dermatologist, told The New York
Times that he’s seen an increase
in patients on semaglutide
medications who are concerned
about facial ageing and sagging.
‘We are seeing more and more
patients on the medications coming
in,’ he said. ‘Generally, it’s people
in their 40s and 50s who are losing
significant amounts of weight and
are concerned about facial ageing
and sagging that occurs as a result.’
New York plastic surgeon Dr
Ryan Neinstein, who regularly treats
Editorial credit: Natalia Varlei / Shutterstock.com
patients seeking treatment for
loose skin after bariatric surgery,
told insider.com that he’s
increasingly seeing people with
the same issue, or ‘even stretchier,
looser skin than bariatric patients’,
after taking Ozempic – due to
‘muscle mass and fat decreasing
so quickly’.
Dr Neinstein noted loose skin
after weight loss can be temporary,
and most people see skin return
to normal 6-18 months following
bariatric surgery; hence, his first
approach in helping Ozempic
patients is the same as with bariatric
surgery: encouraging patience and
plenty of exercise.

EXPOSING CRACKS IN
THE BODY POSITIVITY
MOVEMENT
Many social commentators believe the
run on Ozempic and the attentiongrabbing
headlines it’s garnering
is reinforcing and perpetuating
unattainable beauty. They argue the
Ozempic craze has revealed some major
cracks in the self-love movement and
is undoing much of the body positivity
progress we as a society have fought so
hard to achieve.
A recent article in Time.com says, ‘the
popularity of this new drug [Ozempic]
is increasing the weight of the pressure
to pursue thinness’ and that ‘it’s clear
that the unlearning and undoing of a
century’s worth of harm by the rise of the
“body positivity movement” is regarded
as just another trend.
‘The Ozempic craze is a swift wind that
has revealed that we’ve spent the past
decade building a house of cards.’
RISK & REWARD
It’s important to remember Ozempic
and Wegovy are not magic solutions
and carry risks and side effects. Like
all prescription medication, they
should only be prescribed when
medically necessary. They should
also be accompanied with lifestyle
changes including a nutritious diet
and regular exercise.
Nevertheless, many experts agree
this new set of weight-loss drugs signal
significant progress. The pursuit of an
efficient, reliable method for weight
control to address the long-standing
public health issue of obesity has been
challenging. This new class of drugs,
repurposed from diabetes treatments,
represents an entirely new therapeutic
area and suggests a promising novel
approach to obesity treatment.
As Tim Spector, a professor of
genetic epidemiology at King’s College
in London, told NYPost.com, ‘The field
has been waiting for a blockbuster drug
in this area for decades and this group
of drugs looks like it fits the bill.’ CBM
BEAUTY
EYELASH
QUESTIONS
ANSWERED!
SARAH LAIDLAW, DIRECTOR OF HAIR AND MAKEUP
FOR PRICELINE, GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON
LASHES. WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.
Q. WHY ARE LASHES SO
IMPORTANT TO THE OVERALL
EYE APPEARANCE?
A. Lashes are what frame the eyes, making
them appear larger and helping the eyes
look lifted and more awake.
Full lashes help make the eyes look
larger, too, as the whites look whiter and
the iris colour more pronounced. The fuller
the lashes, the darker the lashes appear.
Q. WHAT PRODUCTS DO YOU
RECOMMEND TO ENCOURAGE
LASH HAIR GROWTH?
A. Lash growth serums are amazing.
They get the most out of your lashes
by supporting them during the growth
phase and help them stay in the follicle
for longer. L’Oreal Paris Lash Serum
($31.99) is a clinically proven gem. Freeze
Frame Lash Prescription ($69) is another
excellent product which encourages lash
hair growth.

Q. DO LASH CONDITIONERS
WORK?
A. In a word, yes! Just like using
conditioner on the hair on your head,
lash conditioners add humectants and
emollients to help soften and smooth
lash hairs. They also help the lashes to
withstand damage from curlers, lash dyes,
lash lifts and makeup application and
removal. The softening and conditioning
add flexibility to the lash fibers, which
helps defend against breakage. Try Cover
Girl Lash Blast Lash and Brow Serum
($24.95) or Rimmel London Wonder Care
Lash & Brow Serum ($26.95).
Q. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO
PRODUCT TO MAKE LASHES
LOOK THICKER?
A. I love a lash-thickening mascara
such as Maybelline the Falsies Surreal
Extensions Washable Mascara in
Blackest Black ($27.99) or Essence Lash
Princess False Lash Effect Mascara
($8). Both of these products contain
ingredients that instantly make the lashes
look thicker with no clumpiness.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 59

BEAUTY
Q. IS BLACK THE BEST SHADE
FOR MASCARA?
A. While black mascara is the go-to
shade for most of us, there are many
ways to make coloured mascara work
for you. If you are just wearing mascara
and no other eye makeup then the
best shade will depend on your eye
colour and your skin tone. Brown
works well for blondes and blue really
makes the whites of your eyes pop.
Try Natio Precision Tubing Mascara
in Brown ($17.95) or Australis Mega
Lash Mascara in Electric Blue ($14.95).
When wearing a full eye look, I find
black mascara helps frame the eyes
and defines the lashes against the eye
shadow and liner.
Q. HOW LONG SHOULD YOU
KEEP YOUR MASCARA ONCE
OPENED?
A. The rule of thumb for mascara is 3-6
months from opening. The main reason
is that the environment of the mascara
tube is the perfect breeding ground for
bacteria, which can cause eye irritations
and infections. There is a small symbol
on all mascaras called a PAO (period
after opening) which tells you how long
you can safely use the mascara for. If you
live in a hot climate or carry mascara in
your handbag regularly then you should
stick closer to the 3 rather than the 6
months of use. Also, never let anyone
else use your mascara as this also carries
risk of infection.

Q. WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON
WATERPROOF MASCARA?
A. I love it! Waterproof mascara is
one of those irreplaceable makeup
inventions. It’s great for events where
you may get a little teary such as
weddings and farewells. It’s also a good
hack if you have hooded eyes and tend
to get a lot of mascara transfer.
Q. DO YOU PREFER THE USE
OF FALSE EYELASHES OR
LASH EXTENSIONS APPLIED
AT A SALON?
A. I really do not like lash extensions. I
find that it is only a really skilled person
who can apply them so they look really
natural and flattering. I prefer a curated
look with false lashes, which offer
varieties to suit all eye shapes. Ardell
Natural Lash in Style 172 ($12.99) is
one of the best.
Q. ANY TIPS ON GETTING
THE PERFECT LASH LOOK?
A. This really depends on your eye
shape, type of lashes and personal
preferences on the eye look you prefer.
Personally, my favourite look is a full
curled frame for the eyes. I love heated
eyelash curlers for the results they
give. The one I recommend and use
the most is the Touch Beauty Silicone
Heat Eyelash Curler ($49.99) and I
love a false lash for extra drama as
well as a volumising mascara for a
similar effect. CBM
SUMMER
BEAUTY
READY
EYES &
BROWS
TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS ON
HOW TO WEAR THIS SUMMER’S
EYE MAKEUP TRENDS.
WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.
Tom Ford Eye Color Quads in
Insolent Rose, Honeymoon, Disco
Dust and Sous le Sable, $156

We spoke to two experts in the area
of eye makeup – Benefit senior brow
and beauty expert Tyler Kellaher
and By Terry award-winning makeup
artist Charlotte Ravet – who know a
thing or two about showing off your
eyes to their best advantage.
Of course, we all know eyebrows
have the power to completely
change the appearance of your
face – that’s why the correct shaping,
styling and colour are crucial.
‘At Benefit we use brow mapping,
a technique which helps to find the
ideal brow shape,’ explains Tyler.
‘Our experts will use a pencil such
as Precisely: My Brow Eyebrow
Pencil or Goof Proof Eyebrow Pencil
to mark the start, the arch and the
tail end of the perfect brow for the
client, which can then be waxed or
tweezed around.
‘A brow tint will help to
manipulate the brow area and
darken any of those fine hairs on
the perimeter of the brow that
you didn’t even know were there.
The result is an instantly fullerlooking
brow.’
Brows are a prominent aspect of
this summer’s eye look. Fluffy, tinted
brows are the perfect complement
to (faux) bronzed and dewy skin. To
create the look at home, try Benefit’s
BEAUTY
With your eyebrows out of the
way, it’s time to focus on the eyes.
‘The “latte makeup look” (a bronzed,
glowy makeup trend that uses shades
of browns and nudes) has really
brought back the brown eyeliner,
which gives a softer look to the eye,’
says Tyler. ‘My favourite interpretation
of this look is to create an elongated
shape and a small wing tip to the eyes
using Benefit Roller Liner in Brown.’
Another tip from Tyler: add a
highlighting flush of colour to your
eyelids by using Benefit Hoola Matte
Bronzer or Shellie Warm-Seashell
Pink Blush. This will give a seamless,
sculpted and cohesive look to the
entire face.
Renowned makeup artist and
educator Charlotte Ravet says this
summer’s eye makeup trend is all
about enhancing a healthy glow
– without spending hours in the
bathroom getting ready. Makeup
should be effortless and long-lasting,
with bonus points if it also doubles up
as skincare.
‘The By Terry Ombre Blackstar
Eyeshadows are not only highly
pigmented and long-lasting but they
are also infused with Tahitian black
Guerlain Ombre G
from the Rouge G
pearl extracts which are rich in
anti-ageing proteins,’ she says.
For further reinforcement, try
the By Terry Hyaluronic Glow
Setting Mist, which promises to
set makeup for 16 hours, as well as
keeping the skin hydrated with 8
types of hyaluronic acid.
Charlotte’s summer eye makeup
palette this year is comprised
of warm tones of bronze, peach
and gold. ‘I like By Terry Ombre
in Bronze Moon on the lids and
blending underneath the eyes
with By Terry Blackstar Crayon
in Terrybleu,’ she shares. ‘Blue is
always a good colour to use as it
awakens the eyes and makes the
whites look whiter and brighter.
Add dimension with By Terry
Crayon Blackstar Eyeliner – this
creamy, easy-to-use eye pencil
is waterproof and smudge-free,
making it perfect for a long
hot summer.’
And perhaps the best advice we
received from the experts? Once
you find a look that suits your
unique features, stick with it and
modify for day or night, winter or
summer. This way, you’ll always be
showing your eyes to their best
advantage. CBM
Use a peach-toned blush to add
Sweep a gold-toned bronzer
with finely milled shimmer particles
We all know how harmful the sun’s
rays are, so why not bluff your way to
being a bronzed goddess? With the
advanced formulations in self-tanners
these days, there’s no excuse not to
To minimise the chance of
exfoliate your skin before application
An
ode
to
perfume
RICKY ALLEN ASKS FOUR
LEADING PERFUMERS
WHAT FRAGRANCE
MEANS TO THEM
AND WHY IT IS AN
IMPORTANT PART OF
THEIR DAILY ROUTINE.

Coco Chanel summed it up best when she said, ‘No elegance
is possible without perfume. It is the unseen, unforgettable,
ultimate accessory.’
Fragrance has always been an integral part of my life; it’s an
extension of my identity and a reflection of how I’m feeling. Perfume is
‘liquid emotion’, master perfumer Michael Edwards once said.
I decided to speak to a broad selection of people in the fragrance
industry to better understand the power of perfume.
Clayton Ilolahia, Communications & Evaluation Consultant at the
esteemed Fragrances of the World, led by world-renowned master
perfumer Michael Edwards, says working in the perfume industry makes
him more aware of the smells around him, both in perfumery and nature.
‘Most of the molecules found in perfumes are also found in nature,’
he explains. ‘Smell is an important sense, with links to memory, emotion
and taste, but it is certainly undervalued. Most of us grow up with little
appreciation of perfume and its true value, yet we are exposed to it every
day through nature, laundry detergents, soap, cosmetics, etc.’
FEATURE
I next sought out Michael Marzano, National Education
Manager for Agence de Parfum, one of the largest niche
luxury fragrance distribution companies in the world, led by
the ‘Prince of Perfume’ Nick Smart.
‘Each perfume has its own identity and story,’ says
Marzano. ‘Fragrance is part of your beauty identity and is
something utterly unique to you; fragrance smells differently
on each person. It leaves a lasting impression and ultimately
expresses your individual personality more than any
accessory or outfit.
‘Fragrance is also the ultimate gift to give your loved
ones. It expresses the intimate connection between the giver
and receiver and the emotional intimacy that comes with it.’
‘Smell is closely linked to memory and experience. It not
only transports the wearer, but the beholder as well,’ he adds.
‘It speaks volumes and reveals an inner personality that is
often not discernible at face value.’
Marzano says we all have a unique odour that is enhanced
by fragrance, so understanding your individual responses
to certain raw materials is fundamental when selecting
a fragrance.
My next fragrance expert was David Whyte, Training
Manager at luxury goods and fragrance company Puig.
‘Fragrance has been around for as long as we have records,
and has always been steeped in ritual,’ he says.
The first recorded use of perfume for human use is traced
to Ancient Egypt. Egyptians hung perfumed clay receptacles
around their necks to keep away illness and as tools of
seduction. Common scents included thyme, lavender, rose,
myrrh and cinnamon. Perfumes were also important in the
mummification process, with cedarwood being an important
part of the embalming process.
Narciso
Rodriguez All
of Me, $215
Creed
Millesime, $439

Ecoya Sensory Escapes
collection, from $22.95
‘Today, we still use perfume as ritual,’ says Whyte, ‘to
give us confidence, to please the people around us and to
refresh and enliven the senses through the day. Fragrance
affects our mood, the situation we are in and even the
people around us.’
Fragrance can transport us to a better place – during the
Covid lockdowns, perfume sales increased exponentially,
offering an affordable luxury to brighten the bleakness for
both ourselves and as gifts for others.
Natalija Hallert, National Trainer for Cosmax Prestige
Brands, one of the largest distributers of fragrance in
Australia, says just as clothing and makeup can reflect an
individual’s personality, fragrance serves as the olfactory
counterpart, leaving a lasting impression as well as creating
a memorable aura.
‘Fragrance has a unique ability to connect to cherished
memories, bringing them vividly to life. Certain scents can
transport me to specific moments in my life, triggering a
flood of nostalgia and emotions – whether it is a scent from
my travels, the perfume my grandmother used to wear or
the scent of a particular flower from my childhood. This
emotional connection makes fragrance more than just a
sensory experience; it is a deeply personal and meaningful
part of my life,’ she shares.
And my own take on fragrance? To live fully, use
fragrance everywhere. Use it in your bath, on your hair
and in your home and office. Fragrance is an uplifting
experiential product that deserves pride of place in every
beauty routine. CBM
IT’S PARTY SEASON,
A TIME TO EAT, DRINK
AND BE MERRY, BUT
ALL THE FUN AND
FRIVOLITY CAN WREAK
HAVOC ON YOUR
SKIN. HERE’S HOW TO
MINIMISE THE DAMAGE
AND SPARKLE YOUR
WAY THROUGH THE
HOLIDAYS.
The festive season beckons.
The party calendar is filling
up. You’re planning the
dress(es), the shoes, the
makeup, the hair, but what about
prepping your skin for the cheese
platters, late nights and one-toomany
vinos?
Busy days rushing to get things
done by the holidays, late nights
celebrating, too much alcohol or
indulgent food and too little sleep
equals a dull and dehydrated
complexion. Now’s the time to bolster
your beauty regimen so you can glow
right through the party season.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 89

FEATURE
YOU ARE
WHAT
YOU EAT
When it comes to taking care of your skin,
what you eat matters just as much as what
you put on it.
Your skin is a living, breathing organ of the
body and it needs to be properly nourished
and hydrated to look and feel its best. When
your skin is deprived of necessary vitamins,
minerals and nutrients, it is unable to function
at optimal levels and its structure slowly
begins to break down. In order to avoid this
breakdown and keep a healthy-looking glow,
you need to feed your skin a mix of nutrients
each day.
Healthy skin starts from the inside and
works its way out. The first step: eliminate
refined sugar and fatty junk foods. Load up
on fruits and vegetables which are packed
with the best-known antioxidants – Vitamins
C, E and beta-carotene (converted to Vitamin
A once in the body). Your skin also needs a
good supply of protein, iron, zinc, copper
and folic acid. Essential beauty boosters in
your daily diet should include at least two
serves of fruit, five serves of vegetables,
healthy carbohydrates such as wholegrain
bread or rice as well as fish, lean meat,
chicken and eggs.
Good skin also needs fat, such as essential
fatty acids and omega fats, to keep it looking
its best. Good sources are liquid oils (such as
rice bran, olive and grapeseed oils), almonds,
walnuts, pine nuts, avocado and seeds such
as sunflower, sesame, poppy and linseeds.
They make great summer snacks or the
perfect dressing over salads.
Dehydration also causes skin ageing, so
drink plenty of water every day. This will not
only hydrate the skin but will help to remove
waste from the kidneys and detoxify the liver.

WATCH YOUR
ALCOHOL INTAKE
Excessive alcohol is a notorious
beauty thief. The more you drink,
the less hydrated you are – and
that extends to your skin. You may
notice your skin is dryer and less
‘plump’ after overdoing it on those
holiday party drinks, and the lines
you already have may appear more
visible and etched.
Alcohol can also make your
face puffy, blotchy and flushed.
The histamine released by alcohol
dilates the blood’s capillaries,
causing erythema or reddening of
the skin. Over time, this flushed
appearance can become more
prominent and even permanent.
To add insult to injury, a night on
the sauce can also create or worsen
breakouts; usually the high sugar
levels in cocktails and wine are the
worst culprits.
Not to completely put you off
that holiday toast, but it’s a timely
reminder that alcohol is a toxin
with little nutrient value and can
contribute to poorer liver function,
reduced immunity, hormone
disruption, cell damage and insulin
issues – all impacting on the quality,
appearance and rate of ageing of
your skin.
It may seem unrealistic to cut out
alcohol completely, so cut back.
Make your wine a spritzer, choose a
cocktail that’s low in added sugars,
or even opt for one of the many
delicious non-alcoholic cocktails and
alcohol-free wines now available.
To minimise damage, drink water
before, during and after your
alcoholic drink. Staying hydrated
should help with the problem of
dull, dry skin the following day.
BEAUTY
SLEEP IS
REAL
Sure, late nights can be fun, but
your skin will be displaying the
consequences. Lack of sleep can
cause blood vessels under your eyes
to dilate, leading to dark circles.
To help combat this, try using an
eye cream with caffeine or vitamin
K, which can help constrict blood
vessels and reduce the appearance
of dark circles.
When you don’t get enough
sleep, your body produces
more cortisol, which can cause
inflammation and puffiness. To
reduce puffiness, try using a cold
compress or eye cream with
anti-inflammatory ingredients like
chamomile or green tea.
To brighten up your complexion,
try using a face mask with
brightening ingredients like vitamin
C or glycolic acid.
No matter how late the night,
never go to bed with makeup on!
Leaving makeup on overnight
can clog your pores, leading to
breakouts and blackheads. It can
also cause dryness and irritation,
especially if you’re wearing heavy or
long-wear makeup. Always remove
your makeup and apply a rich
moisturiser before you go to bed.
Keep some makeup removal wipes
and a night cream on your bedside
table, in case a trip to the bathroom
is just too much to handle.
TOP TIPS
for party-ready skin
FEATURE
APPLY A SHEET MASK
A hydrating sheet mask can be the perfect way to
make your skin look party-ready. Not only will it give
your skin that much-needed hydration boost, but it’ll
also leave your complexion glowing and radiant.
USE A JADE ROLLER
Using a jade roller can help reduce puffiness. Use
upward and outward movements to promote
lymphatic drainage. This will help flush toxins and
increase circulation to give your skin a healthy glow.
For puffy-prone eyes, use the smaller end of the
jade roller and work from the inner corners of your
eyes, rolling outwards towards your temples.
DRINK LOTS OF WATER
Hydration is key for achieving party-ready skin, so
don’t skimp on your water intake! Aim to drink at
least 8 glasses of water a day – more if you have a
big event coming up. Drinking water helps to flush
out toxins, improve your skin’s elasticity and prevent
dreaded breakouts. Plus, your skin will look and feel
fresh, plump and moisturised.
DON’T TRY NEW PRODUCTS
THE DAY OF YOUR PARTY
Don’t use new makeup or skincare for the first
time in case of an allergic reaction. While we love
trying a new beauty product with the best of them,
it’s wise to test them out well ahead of your big
event. Allergic reactions are not uncommon when
using new products. To avoid the discomfort and
disappointment of an unexpected rash or breakout,
patch test all your new makeup products at least
48 hours before the party.

EMERGENCY
FIX for pimples
and breakouts
We’ve all experienced that dreaded
breakout right before a big event.
Fear not! Here are some quick and
effective ways to help you conceal
and conquer blemishes.
1. ICE IT DOWN
Applying ice to the inflamed area
can help reduce redness and
swelling. Wrap an ice cube in a
clean cloth and press gently on the
pimple for a few seconds. Repeat
this process in intervals for about 15
minutes to calm down your skin.
2. SPOT TREATMENT
Look for a spot treatment with
ingredients like salicylic acid or
benzoyl peroxide. These can help
dry out the pimple and kill acnecausing
bacteria. Apply a small
amount directly on the blemish
and avoid the surrounding skin to
prevent irritation.
3. GREEN TEA
SORCERY
Steep a green tea bag in hot water
for a few minutes, let it cool down
then use it as a soothing compress
on the affected area. Green tea has
anti-inflammatory properties that can
help soothe your irritated skin.
4. DON’T PICK!
As tempting as it may be, resist the
urge to pick or pop your pimple.
Doing so can cause scarring and
spread bacteria to other parts of
your skin.
5. CONCEAL
Conceal your pimple with a noncomedogenic
concealer and set with
powder. Avoid liquid concealers and
look for those that have a dry, puttylike
consistency to really adhere and
mask that spot.
Try mixing your concealer with
a yellow colour corrector if your
blemish has a purple tint or a green
colour corrector to cancel out
redness. Start with a small amount
and gently press it onto the blemish,
blending the edges for a natural
finish. Be sure to cleanse thoroughly
after your event to avoid further
breakouts.
6. DEFLECT AND
REDIRECT
When all else fails, create an eyecatching
red lip or smoky eye and no
one will even notice that blemish!
NON-SURGICAL
TWEAKMENTS
OUR GUIDE TO THE
MOST ADVANCED
AND IN-DEMAND
FACIAL AESTHETIC
TREATMENTS FOR
THE COMING YEAR.
Advancements in technologies have
revolutionised the non-surgical
aesthetics industry, creating a
wave of innovative low-downtime
treatments and procedures. Whether you’re
looking to reduce fine lines, add volume,
improve scarring or tighten crepey skin, there’s
a wide variety of options available – all offering
minimal downtime and maximal results.
It goes without saying that with cosmetic
treatments seeingly becoming so ubiquitous, it’s
incredibly important – from both a safety and
an aesthetic perspective – that your provider is
accredited and experienced in the treatments
they perform. These are medical procedures
that require a physical examination and medical
history-taking for a complete consultation. Be
aware that cheapest is not always best, so don’t
make your decision on price alone. After all, it’s
your face, and your safety, we’re talking about.
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
FILLERS
Fillers are a minimally invasive treatment
option to help restore volume, smooth
wrinkles and enhance facial features. They
consist of an injectable gel-like substance
called hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally
occurring substance in your skin. When
strategically injected into certain areas of
your face, they can provide instant and
long-lasting results.
Fillers can be used to address a variety
of concerns, including: smoothing out lines
and wrinkles; filling in deep furrows or scars;
adding volume to cheeks, midface, chin or
temples; enhancing the size and shape of lips;
reducing under-eye circles and tear trough
hollows; reshaping facial features or contours;
and creating a more chiselled jawline.
There are several different HA filler products
available in Australia – including Restylane,
Juvederm, Belotero, Croma and Art Filler –
and each brand offers different filler types
within their range depending on the
indication and area to be treated. For
example, many brands have a filler specifically
for lip augmentation.
The type of filler (composition and viscosity),
where it’s used and the depth of injection all
influence the final result and how long they
last. Superficial injections for lips using ‘lighter’
textures may last up to 6 months, while firmer
filler designed for building structural volume
and contouring and injected deep on the
bone can last 12-18 months.
Before a filler treatment, a numbing cream
is applied to the area to be treated to help
minimise discomfort. Your practitioner uses
a small needle or cannula to inject tiny
amounts of HA filler to specific areas of your
face. Depending on the area/s treated, the
procedure typically takes 15-60 minutes and
you’ll be able to see results immediately.
After your appointment, you may experience
some mild swelling or redness, but most
people can return to their normal activities
with minimal downtime. As the filler settles
over the following 2-4 weeks, final results will
become evident.
INJECTABLE
BIOSTIMULATORS
Biostimulators are injectable treatments
that work by stimulating your body’s
natural production of collagen, elastin
and other essential components of
healthy, youthful skin. As a result, these
treatments have the potential to deliver
natural-looking, long-lasting results for a
range of cosmetic concerns.
One of the differences between
biostimulators and fillers is that
biostimulator injections stimulate your
body’s ability to make collagen, whereas
dermal fillers replace lost volume.
Biostimulators, such as Sculptra (which
uses poly-L-lactic acid) or Radiesse
(which uses calcium hydroxylapatite and
is a hybrid collagen stimulator and filler),
gradually improve the texture and tone
of your skin as new collagen is formed.
It may take a few months to see the full
effects, but the results are long-lasting,

ANTI-WRINKLE
INJECTIONS
typically about two years.
Profhilo is a new type of injectable
biostimulator that contains one of the
highest concentrations of hyaluronic
acid on the market. Unlike traditional
dermal fillers, the product flows easily
and evenly throughout the different
compartments of the face (and neck),
acting like an internal moisturiser. It
works by nourishing and hydrating
dermal cells, stimulating collagen and
elastin and remodelling the skin, rather
than adding volume like fillers.
Biostimulators are injected into the
target areas of your skin, typically using
a fine needle or micro-cannula. Numbing
cream can be applied beforehand to
minimise discomfort.
On average, a series of two to three
sessions over the course of a few months
are required for optimal results.
Anti-wrinkle injections continue to be the most popular
non-surgical cosmetic procedure and have become
a modern-day staple in beauty regimens throughout
the world. Anti-wrinkle injections use a substance
called botulinum toxin, which is a protein produced
by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In cosmetic
procedures, botulinum toxin works by blocking nerve
stimulation to wrinkle-causing muscles, which prevents
the muscle from contracting and significantly reduces
wrinkles and fine lines.
It is commonly used to treat crow’s feet around the
eyes, the frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar
lines, or the “11’s”) and horizontal lines across the
forehead.
Off-label, marionette lines, which run from the corner
of the mouth to the chin, and vertical “smokers’ lines”
above the top lip can also be treated. Anti-wrinkle
injections can also be used for jawline slimming and to
produce the effect of a brow lift by relaxing the muscles
that drag down the brow.
In Australia, botulinum toxin is available for cosmetic
use under the brand names Botox, Dysport, Xeomin
and Letybo.
During the procedure, your practitioner injects
small amounts of botulinum toxin into specific facial
muscles. The injections themselves are done with a
very fine needle, which helps to minimise any
discomfort. The entire procedure usually takes
between 10 and 20 minutes.
After the treatment, you may see some redness,
swelling or bruising, but these side effects generally
fade quickly. You’ll start to notice the effects of the
around 10-14 days post-treatment. The effects can last
anywhere from 3-6 months.
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
MICRONEEDLING
Microneedling is a non-surgical face treatment that involves
using a device with tiny needles to create micro-injuries on
your skin. These tiny punctures stimulate your skin’s natural
healing process, promoting collagen and elastin production
for a smoother, firmer, and more youthful complexion. It is
relatively painless and minimally invasive, and it’s suitable
for all skin types.
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is similar to traditional
microneedling, but it includes the use of radiofrequency
energy. This energy is transmitted through the needles,
heating your skin tissue to tighten and rejuvenate the
targeted area further.
Microneedling is excellent for addressing a variety of
skin concerns. It can help improve skin texture, reduce
fine lines and wrinkles, minimise the appearance of scars
(particularly acne scars), shrink enlarged pores, even out
skin tone, and tighten skin.
Before treatment, your skin will be cleansed and prepped
with a numbing cream. The microneedling device will then
be guided across your skin, creating microscopic punctures.
After the procedure, your skin might feel tight and slightly
swollen, but these feelings will typically subside within a
few hours. You may experience redness in the treated area
for a few days, resembling a sunburn.

LASER SKIN RESURFACING
Laser skin resurfacing involves the use of laser
energy to remove damaged skin cells and
stimulate the growth of new, healthy cells.
The procedure is often used to improve tone,
texture and overall appearance by reducing
common skin concerns like fine lines and
wrinkles, skin texture and tone, acne scars and
other scarring, pigmentation and sun damage.
The principle behind lasers is light absorption.
The same as a black car will be hotter than a
white car because it absorbs more wavelengths
of light, certain target tissues will absorb certain
wavelengths of light more effectively. As the
laser light is monochromatic, the target tissue
will take on maximum absorption while the
surrounding tissues won’t. This allows the target
to be isolated and treated.
The target tissue is all-important when
treating skin problems with a laser. For
pigmentation it is melanin; for spider veins and
other vascular conditions it is haemoglobin
(blood); and for wrinkles it is water. Each
of these target tissues absorbs a different
wavelength of light, meaning a different laser is
needed for each specific problem.
Advances in laser technology mean that
laser skin resurfacing – once reserved for the
treatment of severe conditions due to the
extensive downtime involved – has become
an effective option for many people seeking
reduction of lines and wrinkles and uneven skin
colour, tone and texture.
Most resurfacing lasers work by removing
microscopic quantities of skin and stimulating
the production of new collagen. Non-ablative
lasers uses wavelengths which do not burn
away skin and are suitable for the treatment of
melasma, scarring, fine lines and wrinkles and
typically do not require any downtime.
Ablative lasers include carbon dioxide (CO 2
)
and Erbium: YAG lasers. These use a process
where the upper layers of aged or damaged
skin are vaporised by the controlled laser. It is
this damage that stimulates the healing and
restructuring of the skin, resulting in a more
even complexion and a significant reduction in
lines and wrinkles.
Carbon dioxide lasers can dramatically reduce
wrinkles but downtime and side effects such
as redness and peeling are extended, usually
taking many weeks to heal. Erbium lasers have
a great accuracy with fewer side effects but
cannot treat deep wrinkles as successfully.
The advent of fractional laser, where
microscopic columns of skin are treated while
surrounding skin is left intact, has made it
possible to achieve results comparable results
to traditional CO 2
laser resurfacing with fewer
side effects and significantly less downtime.
Fractional skin resurfacing can utilise
both non-ablative and ablative lasers – the
breakthrough difference of this technology is
the fractionated delivery system of light.
Fractional lasers work by creating tiny holes,
or ‘dots’, in the skin’s surface, penetrating deep
into the dermis. It leaves the skin around each
dot intact, enabling the surrounding tissue
to heal these microscopic thermal injuries by
stimulating the production of new collagen.
The anti-ageing benefits of fractional laser
technology include improving evenness of skin
tone and texture, reducing pore size and the
appearance of lines and wrinkles, and helping
to reverse the effects of sun damage. A milder
treatment may take several sessions, while
one procedure is usually sufficient for a more
aggressive treatment.
Because laser treatments use heat, a mild
to moderate burning sensation is experienced
during treatment and slight swelling, redness
and bronzing afterwards. This normally subsides
after a few days, however full healing can take
several weeks, depending on the intensity of
treatment and the areas targeted.
COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT
SKIN
TIGHTENING
Non-surgical skin tightening treatments are becoming
increasingly popular for those who want to combat the
signs of ageing without going under the knife.
For suitable candidates presenting with a small
to moderate degree of skin laxity, non-surgical skin
tightening modalities can offer an effective, naturallooking
improvement and postpone or even negate the
need for surgical procedures.
Skin tightening devices use energy-based technology
to target the skin’s deeper dermis and subcutaneous
layers, tightening the underlying tissue structure and
stimulating collagen production without damaging the
outer layers of skin.
Skin tightening technologies in Australia include (but
are not limited to) Thermage (which uses radiofrequency
energy), Ultherapy (which uses microfocused ultrasound),
Sofwave (which uses synchronous ultrasound parallel
beam technology) and Ultraformer III (which uses high
intensity focused ultrasound).
These types of procedures are associated with some
discomfort. Many people report feeling warm pulses
under the skin, but this varies between patients and the
type of device used.
There may be some swelling and redness that gradually
subside over the next few days but generally you
should experience little downtime, if any. Results are
usually gradual, as the new collagen forms over the next
couple of months, and are typically long lasting – up to
two years.
For the right candidate, non-surgical skin tightening can
offer impressive results – from improving skin texture to
tightening sagging skin on the face, neck and jawline.

FACIAL MUSCLE
STIMULATION
Facial muscle stimulation is a new non-surgical face
treatment that helps tone, lift and tighten your facial
muscles and regenerate collagen and elastin. This is a new
category of treatment that offers an innovative solution
to smoothing and lifting the face without injections,
downtime or discomfort.
Launched in 2022, Emface by BTL Aesthetics is a
pioneer of facial muscle stimulation. The patented
technology simultaneously emits synchronised
radiofrequency and HIFES (high-intensity facial electrical
stimulation) energy to help remodel the face and address
facial contour changes. Emface’s HIFES energy induces
thousands of powerful muscle contractions that strengthen
and tone the facial elevator muscles, while the RF energy
encourages renewed collagen and elastin production
for more youthful-looking skin. Together, they promote
a slimmer and more defined jawline, fuller and higher
cheeks, an elevated brow and improvement in wrinkles.
Another treatment turning heads in this space is TriLift
by Lumenis. This is a first-of-its-kind facial stimulation
device that targets structure, contour and texture by
treating the three tissue layers – muscles, dermal layer
and epidermal layer. This ground-breaking technology is
the first in the market to use Dynamic Muscle Stimulation
(DMSt) in sequence with two other modalities, TriPollar RF
(radiofrequency) and triFX RF microneedling, to activate
facial muscles, increase natural volume and regenerate
collagen and elastin.
During a facial muscle stimulation treatment, your
practitioner applies small electrodes to your face. These
electrodes deliver gentle electrical currents that stimulate
and contract facial muscles, helping to tone and lift your
skin. You might feel a slight tingling sensation, but the
treatment is generally considered to be painless.
For best results, a series of treatments is needed,
spaced a week apart. The results offer improvement in
wrinkles, improved muscle tone and a noticeable yet
natural-looking lifting effect of the facial muscles. CBM
HOW ‘SKINIFICATION’ OF HAIR IS
TRANSFORMING THE HAIR CARE
INDUSTRY AND IMPROVING SCALP AND
HAIR HEALTH. WORDS BY RICKY ALLEN.
Skinification is the latest hair care
trend and it’s here to stay. This
growing movement sees the
scalp as an extension of the skin and
puts greater emphasis on hair cuticle
and scalp health, promoting healthier
hair with next-level bond-building and
damage-repair solutions.
Scalp health is fundamental to
hair health, and has arguably been
overlooked until now. Just like your skin
and gut, your scalp has a microbiome,
a unique composition of bacteria and
yeast essential for scalp health and
function. The scalp microbiome is the
first line of defence against harmful
pathogens, helping to protect the
hair follicles from damage and
protect your scalp from infection and
irritation. When out of balance, it’s
often the culprit for a large number
of hair woes, including excess oil,
dandruff and even hair loss.
At this new intersection of hair
care and skincare, an increasing
number of hair care products are
being formulated with ingredients
traditionally found in skincare. Beauty
and skincare brands are tapping into
the skinification of hair movement,
with powerhouses Guerlain and Sisley
developing specific hair care and
scalp care products that focus on
nourishing the scalp and rebuilding
healthy hair.
Traditional hair care players are
expanding their offerings to include
scalp serums and ampoules and
a host of skincare-like ingredients
such as hyaluronic acid, probiotics,
Aveda is one such premium
hair care brand leading the
charge by producing whole ranges
totally devoted to hair and scalp
health. I spoke to Alison Pawlus,
principal research scientist at
Aveda, to get her take on
hair health.
‘Like skin, the scalp ages with
time and can be impacted by
lifestyle and environmental
aggressors such as pollution
and micro dust,’ she explains.
‘The thickness of the scalp skin
also decreases as one ages,
becoming flatter and less resilient
and therefore losing some of its
nourishing abilities and barrier
function. Scalp ageing can impact
the look and feel of the hair,
causing it to become dry, brittle,
lacklustre and prone to thinning
and breakage.’
Just as we look after our skin,
we must also look after our scalp.
Keeping the scalp hydrated is
an essential factor in scalp and
hair care. Dry scalps are more
susceptible to damage and can lead
to visible premature scalp ageing,
manifesting in changes
51% increase in scalp hydration
and a 58% increase in scalp
softness after just one use. These
figures clearly show the positive
impact scalp treatments have on
the hair.
Of course, what we eat is
also important. Protein, iron,
magnesium, zinc and biotin are
necessary for a healthy scalp
you have plenty of fish, eggs,
carrots and oats in your diet.
Supplements such as Healthy
for hair.
The increasing concern and
SUMMER
hair care
ESSENTIALS
THIS SUMMER, WE’RE FIGHTING FRIZZ AND BANISHING
BRASSINESS! HERE’S HOW TO HELP KEEP YOUR HAIR IN TIP-TOP
SHAPE NO MATTER THE HEAT OR HUMIDITY.
Ah, summer hair. For some, it means
sun-kissed highlights and beachy
textured waves. For others, it’s a
period best survived behind a hair
mask or covered in a permanent
slick of conditioner.
Taking extra care of your hair during the summer
months is essential to maintaining healthy and vibrant
locks. With the right products, you can protect your hair
from the damaging effects of too much sun, saltwater
and chlorine and keep your tresses looking happy and
healthy all summer long.

www.cosbeauty.com.au 107

BEAUTY
SUMMER
PROOF
YOUR
HAIR
The sun’s UV rays are just as bad for your hair as
they are for your skin. Ultraviolet rays chemically
break down the building blocks of hair – keratin
proteins – making hair weaker, dryer and more
likely to break.
Sun protection for our hair is vital to keeping it
looking its best. Look for shampoos, conditioners
and sprays that shield your hair against the
harmful effects of the sun and provide muchneeded
nourishment.
Summer, sun and swimming can make a
magnificent trio, but beware the dreaded ‘postswim
hair’. The cortex, or inner layer, of hair is
protected by the cuticle, or outer later. Sebum
is a natural lubricant that protects the cuticle.
Chlorine in pools sucks the sebum out of the hair,
which may cause the cuticle to crack. This damage
causes the hair’s natural sheen to diminish and the
unprotected cortex to split (creating split ends).
Using a protective hair product and an anti-
residue shampoo can do wonders to help keep
the effects of chlorine at bay.
1. 2.

Similarly, when you swim in salt water, salt
minerals stick to the hair, which can cause severe
dehydration and fading and can often alter your
hair colour. To help combat this, once you’re out
of the water, rinse your hair immediately with
fresh water. Invest in a good hair condiitoning
treatment and apply as needed.
And while that refreshing ocean or pool may
be beckoning, don’t dive straight into the water
without first wetting your hair with fresh water.
Hair is super porous and absorbent. If you spray
water over your hair (or better yet apply hair oil
or a mask) before entering the pool or ocean,
your tresses won’t soak up such high quantities of
drying and damaging salt and chlorine.
DAMAGE
CONTROL
Prevention is far better cure, but if your hair is already in
a delicate state, it’s time to bring in the back-up. Start
by incorporating a twice-weekly hair repair treatment,
such as a hydrating mask or serum. For added TLC,
apply a small amount daily to the ends of your hair.
These hair saviours help to fight frizz, hydrate hair and
give it back its shine and lustre.
When using an intensive conditioner or treatment
post-shower, wrap hair in a towel to keep heat in and
allow the product to penetrate as much as possible.
If you don’t already sleep on a silk pillowcase, here’s
another reason to make the switch: in addition to
helping prevent skin creases, a silk pillowcase can help
hair retain moisture and reduce fly-aways.
NEW
COSMETIC
SURGERY
REGULATIONS
how do they
affect you?
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
AUSTRALIA’S COSMETIC SURGERY REFORMS.
As of 1 July 2023, significant changes
have been made to Australia’s
cosmetic surgery industry. These
are part of a sweeping reform
package issued by the Medical Board of
Australia (MBA) and Australian Health
Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra)
after an independent review found unsafe
practices, misleading advertising and a need
for minimum standards on qualifications.
The review was necessitated after alarming
media reports of unsafe practices and medical
misconduct of certain ‘cosmetic cowboys’ in
the sector. As such, the new regulations are
designed to protect patients and improve the
standard of care for cosmetic procedures.
www.cosbeauty.com.au 121

FEATURE
WHAT’S NEW?
The new reforms mandate that all cosmetic surgery
patients must have a GP referral, be screened
for underlying psychological disorders such as
body dysmorphic disorder, have at least two preoperative
consultations (at least one in-person
with the practitioner performing the surgery), and
a mandatory cooling-off period before booking or
paying a deposit for the surgical procedure.
In addition, there is a ban on influencer
testimonials and deceptive or misleading social
media posts, as well as advertising that offers
discounts without terms and conditions or creates
unreasonable expectations of treatment or
encourages indiscriminate use.
Cosmetic surgery advertising must now be
identified as adult content. Videos and images must
be used responsibly and not for entertainment and
must not be sexualised or include gratuitous nudity.
The use of negative body language is banned, such
as ‘mummy makeover’, ‘problem area’, ‘unsightly
bulges’ and ‘thigh gap’ and the use language that
promotes ‘ideal’ body shapes is also banned, such as
‘bikini body’, ‘happier, healthier you’, ‘look as young
as you feel’, ‘art’ and ‘sculpt’.
Medical practitioners must include clear
information about their registration type and their
registration number, and provide easily accessible
information about risks and recovery.
COSMETIC SURGERY
PATIENTS MUST HAVE
A GP REFERRAL,
PSYCHOLOGICAL
SCREENING, TWO
PRE-OP CONSULTATIONS,
AND A COOLING-OFF
PERIOD.

GP REFERRAL
All patients seeking cosmetic surgery must have a
referral, preferably from their usual GP – if that is not
possible, from another GP or other specialist medical
practitioner. The referring practitioner must work
independently of the practitioner who will perform the
surgery and must not perform cosmetic surgery or nonsurgical
cosmetic procedures themselves.
Only cosmetic surgery, such as breast augmentation,
liposuction, abdominoplasty, facelifts, rhinoplasty and
cosmetic genital surgery, requires a GP referral.
Non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as anti-wrinkle
injections, fillers, laser and energy-based treatments and
thread lifts, do not require a GP referral.
The referral should indicate the nature of the patient’s
request, but the decision about which surgery/procedure
is provided will be made by the patient and the
practitioner performing the surgery. Just like other areas
of medicine, the patient can use the referral to see a
practitioner of their choice.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
SCREENING
The practitioner who will perform the surgery
must discuss and assess the patient’s reasons and
motivation for requesting the surgery, including
external reasons (for example, a perceived need to
please others) and internal reasons (for example,
strong feelings about appearance). The patient’s
expectations of the surgery must be discussed to
ensure they are realistic.
The practitioner who will perform the surgery
must assess the patient for underlying psychological
conditions such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD),
which may make them an unsuitable candidate for
the surgery.
If screening indicates significant underlying
psychological issues, they must be referred for
evaluation to a psychologist, psychiatrist or GP, who
works independently of the cosmetic practitioner.
A practitioner must decline to perform the
surgery if they believe it is not in the best interests
of the patient.
Before any cosmetic surgery, all patients under
18 must be referred to, and be evaluated by,
a psychologist, psychiatrist or GP, who works
independently of the practitioner who will perform
the surgery, to identify if there are any significant
underlying psychological problems which may make
them an unsuitable candidate for surgery.
FEATURE
TWO
CONSULTATIONS
REQUIRED
A patient seeking cosmetic surgery
must have at least two pre-operative
consultations. The patient’s first consultation
must be with the practitioner who will
perform the surgery or another registered
health practitioner who works with the
practitioner who will perform the surgery
(not a patient advisor or an agent).
At least one of the two consultations must
be in-person with the practitioner who will
perform the surgery.
PATIENT CONSENT
When consent can be given, the patient must not
be requested to sign consent forms at their first
consultation. Additionally, the patient cannot consent
to cosmetic surgery until they have had an in-person
consultation with the practitioner who will perform
the surgery.
The decision to have the surgery (provision of
informed consent) must be made at a consultation with
the practitioner who will perform the procedure (in
person or by video).
The medical practitioner who will perform the
cosmetic procedure or prescribe the cosmetic
injectable must provide the patient with enough
information for them to make an informed decision
about whether to have the procedure. The practitioner
must have a verbal consent discussion with the
patient as well as provide written information in
plain language.
Practitioners should take all practical steps to
provide information in a language understood by
the patient and in a way that does not glamorise
cosmetic procedures, minimise the complexity of the
procedure or overstate likely results. It must include
details about the procedure (including risks and
possible complications, range of possible outcomes,
recovery and aftercare requirements), the medical
practitioner’s registration type, qualifications, training
and experience.

MANDATORY
COOLING-OFF
PERIOD
There must be a cooling- off period of at
least seven days after the patient has had two
consultations and given informed consent
(signed consent forms), before the surgery can
be booked or a deposit paid.
For patients under 18, there must be a
cooling-off period of at least three months
between the provision of informed consent and
surgery being performed. The patient should
be encouraged to discuss why they want to
have the surgery with their GP during the
cooling- off period.
There is no cooling-off period with nonsurgical
cosmetic procedures (which may
pierce the skin but don’t cut beneath it, such as
injectables, thread lifts and laser treatments),
unless the patient is under the age of 18.
PRACTITIONERS SHOULD TAKE ALL PRACTICAL
STEPS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION IN A LANGUAGE
UNDERSTOOD BY THE PATIENT AND IN A WAY THAT
DOES NOT GLAMORISE COSMETIC PROCEDURES,
MINIMISE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE PROCEDURE OR
OVERSTATE LIKELY RESULTS.
MORE CHANGES ON
THE WAY
The title of ‘cosmetic surgeon’, and who can use it, is a hotly
contested issue, with differing opinions on what qualifications
guarantee safe care. As cosmetic surgery is not recognised as
a speciality in Australia, any medical practitioner, whether or
not trained and competent in cosmetic surgery, may legally call
themselves a ‘cosmetic surgeon’.
The independent review commissioned by the MBA
and Ahpra recommended an ‘endorsement model’ for
cosmetic surgeons to establish expectations about minimum
qualifications, and a public education campaign to assist the
public to understand an endorsement, both of which have
been accepted by the MBA and Ahpra.
An endorsement would recognise that a person has an
extended scope of practice in a particular area because they
have obtained a specific qualification approved by the Medical
Board. The training programs leading to the qualification also
must be accredited by an independent accreditation authority.
Once established, the report says it ‘will be easy for consumers
to identify whether a practitioner is qualified to perform
cosmetic surgery’ (as the endorsement will be listed on the
Ahpra public register).
‘We want everyone who chooses to have cosmetic surgery
to be better informed and protected. We want doctors who
undertake cosmetic surgery to be trained to a safe standard.
We want the public to feel confident they are going to be
well looked after and, if things go wrong, that they will be
supported and that their concerns will be acted on,’ said Ahpra
chief executive Martin Fletcher.
‘We will use our legal powers in full to better protect
consumers who choose cosmetic surgery. Registered
practitioners in the industry can expect a relentless focus.’ CBM
Patient assessment
Informed consent
Cooling-off period

COSMETIC SURGERY
Required.
A patient is required to have two pre-operative
consultations with the practitioner performing the
procedure or another registered health practitioner
who works with the performing practitioner. At
least one consultation must be in person.
The practitioner who will perform the surgery
must discuss and assess the patient’s reasons and
motivation for requesting the surgery and must
screen the patient for underlying psychological
conditions such as body dysmorphic disorder.
Where the practitioner deems the patient an
unsuitable candidate for psychological reasons,
they must refer the patient to a psychologist,
psychiatrist or GP.
Detail informed consent is required, including
financial consent and consent for the use of any
images or videos taken. The patient can only
consent to surgery after having the two preoperative
consultations, one of which must be an
in-person consultation with the practitioner who will
perform the surgery.
Consent must be given only after the practitioner
has provided the patient with information about the
procedure, the practitioner’s registration type and
qualifications, and the total costs involved.
A cooling-off period of seven days is required after
the patient has had two consultations and signed
consent forms.
For patients under the age of 18, the cooling-off
period is at least three months.
NON-SURGICAL COSMETIC
PROCEDURES
Not required.
For Schedule 4 (prescription-only) cosmetic
injectables, including anti-wrinkle injectables
and fillers, a consultation is required with the
practitioner performing the treatment, either
in-person or by video, each time they prescribe
Schedule 4 products.
Same as cosmetic surgery requirements.
Detail informed consent is required, including
financial consent and consent for the use of any
images or videos taken.
Consent must be given only after the practitioner
has provided the patient with information about the
procedure, the practitioner’s registration type and
qualifications, and the total costs involved.
No cooling-off period is required for patients over
the age of 18.
For patients under the age of 18, the cooling off
period is at least seven days.
*Note: The Medical Board of Australia considers
that cosmetic injectables should not be prescribed
for patients under the age of 18 for cosmetic
purposes.
