HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!
A BRIEF SUMMARY
The day gets its name from a famous
saint, but there are several stories
of who he was. The popular belief
about St. Valentine is that he was a
priest from Rome in the third century
AD. Emperor Claudius II had banned
marriage because he thought married
men were bad soldiers.
Valentine felt this was unfair, so he
broke the rules and arranged marriages
in secret. When Claudius found
out, Valentine was thrown in jail and
sentenced to death.
There, he fell in love with the jailer’s
daughter and when he was taken
to be killed on the 14th of February,
he sent her a love letter signed “from
your Valentine”.
The first Valentine’s Day was in the year
496!
It is thought to have originated from
the Roman festival called Lupercalia
in the middle of February - officially
the start of their springtime. I won’t
get into any of the sacrificial customs,
but according to some, as part of the
celebrations, boys drew names of
girls from a box. They’d be boyfriend
and girlfriend during the festival and
sometimes they’d get married. Like a
love lotto!
Later on, the church wanted to turn
this festival into a Christian celebration
and decided to use it to remember
St. Valentine as well.
Love your life, George and Irene
Being the month of February... the
month of the Heart - we thought
we’d share the story of George and
Irene... a love story on many levels.
Irene: I first met George in 1977 when
I was 18. We were both treeplanters. I
was from Victoria, BC and George was
from Bownmanville, Ontario. We both
worked for the same treeplanting
crew - Brinkman & Associates, who ran
many of the crews in BC. I was taking a
working break after high school before
university, and George and his brother
Honas were working in the family treeplanting
business.
Pauline Brinkman (George’s sister)
was a friend of mine... and her job in
the family business was to set up the
crews. Many times she said to me “You
should meet my brothers... I have 6 and
they are such great guys...” As we got
to know each other better, Pauline narrowed
her suggestion to “You should
meet my brother George.” She was so
sure we would be compatible she put
us on the same crew one season She
was right, he was a handsome, sweet
guy and I was immediately smitten...
The Shop is full of
unique live edge slabs,
and sawmill bits and
pieces...
the engine of the mill he
cut his first boards on.
~ Karma Halleran
we both were, barely leaving each others
side until the work ended... I went
back to attend University and George
went home to Ontario for the winter.
We hooked up again the next summer
in camp and for a couple more years
things went like this.
After one season treeplanting near
Prince George, George and Honas
came to Meadow Creek to help a fellow
Dutchman, Henk van Tuyl finish
his house. Honas and George were
both impressed with Meadow Creek...
the beauty, the quiet farming and
forest community was welcoming.
Once again back in Ontario for the
winter, George, an avid reader, was
leafing through the first edition of Harrowsmith
when he came across properties
for sale in the back... one was for
33 acres of flat land in Meadow Creek,
BC. He knew what that meant and so
Honas and George pooled their money
to purchase the land. There was a small
cabin on the property, which George
expanded and became the house he
brought Irene home to. Honas and
George were hard workers, and they
worked at various jobs in the area... still
they had to leave to make the big bucks
treeplanting out of the area. When
our first daughter, Camillia, was born,
George did a few more stints away as
needed, but his heart was not in it, he
hated being gone from his family, and
he wanted to be home each night and
together we decided that we would
make something local work, it might
be tough but it would be worth it.
George: An acquaintance in the Valley
had a Mobile Dimensional Mill
partially assembled. The idea appealed
to me so I asked if I set it up could I
practice on it.
I put it together and started making
boards. I realized early that turning
a log into lumber was like mining, I
would take my time and study the log,
evaluating its potential, before making
a cut. This way I was able to extract the
best board possible. I became the expert
in the area at getting the highest
quality wood
from each
tree. I mined
edge-grain for
doors and windows,
tight and
strong wood
for canoes. I
rigged up my
Mill to be able
to handle the butt ends loggers were
told to leave behind. These massive
log ends, sometimes as large as 6-10
ft round, slowed down production at
the larger mills. They needed to churn
out board feet as quickly as possible
to maximize their return. I could get
a hold of them relatively cheap, often
for the cost of getting them picked up
and hauled to my mill. This saved them
from the burn piles, and I was able to
cut massive boards, big enough for a
single slab table top or door. They were
beautiful, remarkable pieces of wood...
each piece a work of art in its own way.
I was cutting live-edge boards before
Boards by George,
with the loving
attention of
George and
Irene grew into
a very successful
business.
Words of advice
“Love what you
are doing... it
makes the lean
and boney times
bearable.” - G&I
Live edge pieces
for anything
you can imagine!
people knew what to do with them...
unique lightning striked logs with their
lacy edges – anything unusual or oddly
shaped was milled into a board for
someone’s future project.
Those early years were very boney... the
economy was slow. Though my stock
was steadily increasing,
sales
were not growing
as quickly.
We reminded
each other that
we were home
each night together,
and
things would
get better. At least once, Irene went
treeplanting up the Duncan (relatively
close to home) while I worked the mill
and looked after Camillia. We both invested
a lot of sweat in the ‘Marblehead
Specialty Lumber Company’ our corporate
name – which was too long really,
my brother Honas, who had numerous
projects on the go would put in his order
for lumber and coined the phrase
by asking in this manner every time “I
need some Boards by George”.
Irene added the tag line below our
corporate name... and eventually just
phased out the other and we became
known as Boards By George... short
and sweet and
easy to remember.
Irene: By 1986
our little family
had expanded
to three daughters,
Camillia,
Jenny and Holly.
We were still
running one
Mill, and had
one employee
helping out.
The word about
the quality of
our wood was
spreading, and
people started
to come to pick
out a board or two for their own special
projects. Sharing that excitement
with our customers was very rewarding...
our works of art were being taken
home to adorn someone’s own home
or project.
To this day all our girls, now living on
Vancouver Island, can’t hear
a chainsaw or smell fresh
sawdust without thinking
of home. They know their
wood species by tree and
by board. They have seen
the benefits of hard work,
and work hard themselves.
We are of the land.
George would often go
on buying trips, and for
a number of years Revelstoke
supplied the best
and biggest wood in the
Province. He would ship
hardwood out from back
East... and his longest buying
trip took him to Costa Rica for some
exotic hardwoods that did not grow
locally. He filled a shipping container
with teak and other species and sent it
off. It took months to arrive, but it did.
And our stock expanded into the exotic
woods.
Hiking on Haida
Gwaii amongst
giant trees...
“one of our very
favourite places”
~ Irene
George: We were able to add a couple
more mills, and some more staff... we
probably kept 6 or 7 staff employed for
a good 15 years before I retired Boards
By George last year. We sold off just
about all the stock and let our staff go...
some retired, and others moved into
other mill jobs in the area.
One of the highlights that stand out
for me is that timberframing became a
mainstream way of building, I had the
honour of supplying just about every
single Timberframe start up in our area
with at least their first load of timbers
for their first projects...
Purcell, Hamill Creek, Spearhead, Mandala
Homes are some of the larger ones
that most people are familiar with, and
many smaller ones as well.
Some of them went on to set up their
own mills, and some
found access to larger,
and therefore cheaper
supplies of wood...
when they needed that
super special post or
board they knew where
to come. Working with
wood has been my lifelong
passion. We had purchased the
building site for our retirement home,
a number of years ago... on a boney
piece of ground that overoloks the
Meadow Creek Valley. I had stood on
this very spot in 1974 on my first visit to
the area and thought “someone should
build a house here” .
When the owners decided to sell, we
purchased the land, and then sat on it...
first building a workshop.
Irene: Eventually it was time to build
our retirement home. We designed,
cut the wood, placed each trice
stained or painted board, beam and
post over 8 years. Made with 22 species
of wood, our home is a shrine to
the way we chose to spend our lives...
working hard and creating beauty together.
Our children first always, our
business that was a passion as much
as it was work, our grandchildren who
make us smile every day, and now
retirement. We will golf, run, garden,
collect old sawmills, visit family and
friends, and cut a few more Boards by
George... love your life!
Cannabis Corner
Cultivating Heart Health:
The Role of Cannabis in Senior Wellness
Canadians over 65
years of age are
one of the fastest-growing
seg-
Terese Bowors
ments of Cannabis
consumers in Canada. As we step
into February, a month dedicated to
matters of the heart, let’s explore how
Cannabis, often misunderstood, can
play a pivotal role in nurturing cardiovascular
health for our cherished
seniors.
Aging gracefully comes with its own
set of challenges, and cardiovascular
health is a paramount concern for
many seniors. Embracing a holistic
approach to well-being becomes increasingly
important as we navigate
the complexities of aging.
Cannabis, often associated with recreational
use, possesses remarkable
properties that extend beyond its
stereotypical image. Rich in anti-inflammatory
and antioxidant compounds,
certain cannabinoids present
in Cannabis have sparked interest in
the wellness community. While ongoing
research is shedding light on the
potential benefits, it’s essential to approach
this exploration with an open
mind and a commitment to responsible
consumption.
Recent studies have hinted at a potential
connection between Cannabis
and heart health. Preliminary findings
suggest that cannabinoids may contribute
positively to cardiovascular
well-being. However, it’s crucial to
emphasize the importance of moderation
and mindfulness. Seniors are
encouraged to approach Cannabis
use with a thoughtful perspective,
acknowledging individual needs and
potential sensitivities.
Among the myriad cannabinoids
found in Cannabis, CBD (cannabidiol)
stands out as a potential ally
for cardiovascular health. CBD is renowned
for its anti-inflammatory and
antioxidant properties, which may
contribute to a healthier heart. Additionally,
CBG (cannabigerol) is gaining
attention for its potential vasodilator
effects, promoting improved blood
flow. These cannabinoids, when integrated
into a mindful wellness routine,
hold promise in supporting the
cardiovascular well-being of seniors.
One must tread carefully, especially
when it comes to interactions with
existing medications. Seniors should
consult with their healthcare professionals
before incorporating Cannabis
into their wellness routines. This precaution
ensures a safe and informed
approach, aligning with the individual’s
unique health profile. Pharmacists
tend to have the best understanding
of Cannabis interactions.
For those intrigued by the idea of integrating
Cannabis into their wellness
journey, a personalized and gradual
approach is key. Starting with low doses
and adjusting based on individual
responses allows for a tailored experience.
Crafting a Cannabis routine is
not a one-size-fits-all endeavor; it requires
thoughtful consideration and,
ideally, the guidance of a Cannabis
Coach.
As we celebrate matters of the heart
in February, let’s expand our understanding
of holistic senior wellness.
Cannabis, with its potential benefits,
can be a valuable component when
approached with care and consideration.
The journey to well-being is a
unique and personal one, and empowering
seniors on this transformative
path is our shared commitment.
Leap Year!
Thursday, February 29, 2024
2024 is a leap year, which means we get to enjoy a whole
extra day of February, and people born on February 29
finally get some presents.
But why do we even have leap years?
Our calendar has 365 days in a year, because that’s pretty
much how long it takes the Earth to orbit the Sun. The
problem is that in reality it takes the Earth around 365 ¼
days (actually 365.24219 days) to circle the Sun (that’s a
solar year), which means our calendar is out by around a
quarter of a day a year.
That discrepancy was spotted a while back.
In 45 B.C. a decree by Julius Caesar began the practice of
adding an extra day every four years, with the creation of
the Julian calendar – making up for those quarter days.
That would be perfect if a solar year were exactly 365 ¼
days – but 365.242 is a teeny bit less than that, and over
time that teeny bit adds up.
By 1582 A.D. that slight discrepancy in the Julian calendar
added up to 10 days. So Pope Gregory XIII created the
Gregorian calendar, coined the term “leap year” and established
February 29 as the official date to add to a leap year.
He also introduced a rule to take into account the discrepancy
in the Julian calendar.
Now, a leap year occurs in every year that is divisible by
four, but only in century years that are evenly divided by
400.
Therefore, 800, 1200 and 2000 were leap years - but 1700
and 1900 were not, because even though they are divisible
by four, they are not divisible by 400.
So that fixes everything. Well, not entirely. The solar year is
approximately 26 seconds shorter than the Gregorian year
at the moment – but that’s a problem for another day.
SEED STARTING IN FEBRUARY?
It is time to start some seeds, but not
most.
So take your time! Don’t rush your
seed starting. In fact, your seedlings
will be stronger and more resilient if
started later on and closer to your last
frost date.
For example, if your seed packet says
start indoors 8-10 weeks before your
last frost date, start them closer to the
8 week mark instead. The shorter your
seedlings need to live inside under
grow lights, the better.
1. Celery & Celeriac
Celery is a slow growing veggie that
has gained popularity with home
gardeners over the last few years.
Celeriac is a root vegetable in the
same family as celery and often referred
to as celery root. The roots are
big, white and have a rich flavour
comparable to a parsnip or potato
but with a slightly more bitter taste.
It’s so tasty pureed in a soup.
Celery & Celeriac Seed Starting &
Growing Tips For Zone 3
• Sow seeds about 1/4” deep with
a few seeds in each cell. Thin once
seedlings have matured.
• Seeds are extremely slow to germinate.
Expect about 25-35 days before
you see any growth.
• Transplant in the garden after your
last frost date. Celery does not like the
cold, so if nighttime temperatures are
dropping in the early Spring, cover
with a cloche for the first few weeks.
Celeriac is a bit more cold hardy but
shouldn’t be exposed to hard frosts.
• Be sure to feed your plants regularly
throughout the growing season. I’d
suggest top dressing your plants with
compost once every 2-3 weeks.
2. Hot Peppers
February is THE month to start your
hot peppers indoors in Zone 3.
A rule of thumb is the hotter the pepper,
the earlier to start it indoors.
There’s so many great hot pepper varieties
to choose from. So many!
Hot Pepper Seed Starting & Growing
Tips For Zone 3
• Sow one pepper seed per cell
about 1 1/2” deep
• Peppers germinate faster with bottom
heat, so put your tray on a heat
mat if you have. If not, be sure to keep
them in a warm space with a humidity
dome on top.
• Pinch back your peppers 2-3 times
before transplanting them outside
to encourage bushiness and more
growth. It makes a big difference and
will result in more productive plants.
3. Echinacea
Echinacea (or coneflower) is a gorgeous
perennial flower hardy to Zone
3. It produces blooms throughout the
entire growing season, which can be
consumed for medicinal purposes as
well as used for cut flower bouquets.
Echinacea is also said to be drought
tolerant and a very low maintenance
plant!
Echinacea Seed Starting & Growing
Tips For Zone 3
• For blooms in year one, start seeds
indoors in February.
• Sow seeds on top of the soil surface,
covering with a small amount of
soil to keep moist.
• Once plants are established, transplant
into well drained soil in a full
sun location of your garden.
10
February 2024 Discover Sixty-Five email: seniors@pennywiseads.com
• Echinacea is susceptible to fungus
if leaves are wet, so water from below
or at the very root of the plant.
4. Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts are a brassica that
many Canadian gardeners seem to
struggle growing.
They are slow growing, susceptible
to being eaten by flea beetles and
require shade during the hottest
months of the growing season. A bit
of a high-maintenance vegetable!
But they are such a gorgeous plant
to grow and can do really well in the
right growing conditions.
There are tons of great brussels
sprouts varieties to choose from that
will do well in a cold climate and
short growing season like we have
here in Canada.
For a mid-summer harvest, start your
brussels sprouts seeds indoors in
February in Zone 3.
For a late Fall to early Winter harvest,
you can wait and start seeds in May.
Brussels Sprouts Seed Starting &
Growing Tips For Zone 3
• Sow 3-4 seeds per cell about a 1/2”
or so deep.
• Once seedlings put on their true
leaves, separate seedlings into individual
containers so they can continue
to space out and grow.
• When transplanting in the garden,
be sure to provide lots of space between
each plant — at least 2’.
• Brussels sprouts benefit from having
a support or cage to grow up. Tomato
cages work well!
• Use a row cover to protect plants
from flea beetles and to provide
some sun protection.
5. Chives
Chives are a favourite Zone 3 hardy
perennial herb. It can survive winter
after winter of harsh, cold temperatures
and is still the very first plant to
turn green in the garden each Spring.
The edible flowers chive plants put
on in early Spring can be used to infuse
vinaigrettes and oils! After that,
harvest chives all season long and
well into Fall.
Start chives from seed in February so
you can enjoy a substantial harvest in
your first season. Starting chives early
also ensures your plant is well established
to survive its first Winter.
Chive Seed Starting & Growing
Tips For Zone 3
• Sow several seeds per cell on the
soil surface, covering with a little bit
of soil to keep moist.
• When chives are planted densely
together, they will grow in grass-like
clumps. Keep the “clumps” together
until you’re ready to transplant into
the garden.
• Spread out chive plants in the garden
so they have lots of room to get
wide and bushy. I have about 12” between
my plants.
• In late Fall, prune back your chive
plant so only a few inches of growth
appears above the soil surface.
Mulch heavily with straw or leaves to
insulate.
February is HEART Month
February is Heart Month in Canada,
a necessary time to increase
public awareness of cardiovascular
disease and what we can do to reduce
the risk of heart disease and
stroke.
Here’s how to prevent heart disease,
what signs and symptoms to
look for, and five tips for living your
healthiest life.
Heart disease is the second leading
cause of death in Canada, and
the leading cause of death among
Canadian women. With February
marking Heart Month, we’re turning
our attention to spreading awareness
about heart disease and how
you can improve your heart’s health
starting today.
What is Heart Disease?
Heart disease is a blanket term that
comprises a variety of conditions
that affect the heart’s ability to
function properly. The most common
type is coronary artery disease,
where plaque builds up in the arteries
blocking the flow of blood and
oxygen to and from the heart. These
conditions can lead to heart attacks
and eventually heart failure when
not taken care of.
Heart disease is often mistaken for
a merely genetic condition, but according
to the Heart & Stroke Foundation,
80% of premature heart
disease and stroke is preventable
through lifestyle changes. While a
family history of heart disease does
put you at higher risk, it is our everyday
behaviors and habits that are the
biggest contributors to developing
heart disease.
Preventing Heart Disease
and Stroke
A healthy heart starts with a healthy
lifestyle. To reduce your chances of
developing heart disease or increasing
the severity of an existing heart
condition, the Heart & Stroke Foundation
recommends:
• Being physically active
• Eating a healthy diet (one that
is lower in fats, especially trans and
saturated fats)
• Limiting alcohol consumption
• Being smoke free
• Maintaining a healthy weight
Signs and Symptoms of
Heart Disease
While the number of adults diagnosed
with heart disease is decreasing
overall in Canada, one in 12
Canadians still live with diagnosed
heart disease, the Public Health
Agency of Canada reports.
If you experience any of the follow-
12 February 2024 D65
ing symptoms, talk to your doctor
about being tested for heart disease:
• Chest pain
• Shortness of breath
• Fainting
If you have high blood pressure,
high cholesterol or diabetes, you’re
at higher risk of developing heart
disease. Managing these conditions
is crucial to preventing and reversing
some of the side-effects of heart
disease; so visit your doctor regularly
and follow their advice.
The earlier heart disease is detected,
the better one’s chances are of
reducing and even preventing complications
down the line.
5 Tips for Healthy Living
Here are some suggestions to help
you lower your chances of developing
heart disease:
Move your body: Physical activity
lowers your chances of developing
heart disease and other conditions.
Aim for 30 minutes a day. Walking is
an excellent place to start.
Reduce stress: Exercise, meditation
and unplugging from technology
are just some of the ways you can
reduce stress in your life.
Cook meals at home: Take out may
be convenient, but these meals are
overloaded with sodium and fats.
Cooking at home is the easiest way
to ensure you’re putting healthy
fuel in your body. Add lots of hearthealthy,
leafy greens, omega-3s and
healthy nuts such as almonds and
walnuts.
Get enough sleep: Your body needs
time to rest, restore and rejuvenate.
Not getting enough Zs puts you at
higher risk of developing cardiovascular
disease, the World Health Organization
reports.
Be proactive: Prevention is your
best defence against heart disease.
Talk to your doctor about your concerns
and don’t ignore warning
signs or gut feelings that something
might be wrong.
A healthy heart is a happy heart. Why
not embrace a healthier lifestyle
this month, and every month. Your
heart–and your health–will thank
you for it.
New Possibilities to Reboot & Renew
The new year is a great time to start
planning to Renew and Reboot. Set
aside some time to set some goals
for yourself. While diligent financial
planning is critical, we tend to be
far less thoughtful when it comes
to planning how we will spend the
next 30 years of our lives. The shift
into retirement is so much more
than a financial event. It changes
your lifestyle and self-perception
and completely alters how you will
spend your time.
As a retirement coach, I often hear
from anxious clients who are unable
to visualize the rest of their lives.
Planning the rest of your life can be
less daunting if you start before you
retire. We cannot know what the
future holds for us, but the adjustment
will be less challenging if you
hold the attitude that this is a time
of possibilities and new beginnings.
Sometimes people talk about the
emptiness and boredom that can
happen if you don’t have a plan.
You’re less likely to encounter problems
if you’ve thought in advance
about what you want it to be like.
Retirement is a time to disengage
from your old self and reboot, renew
and create something new. Take the
time to clarify your core values, discover
activities that are meaningful
to you, identify relationships that
you want to nurture, and create a
bucket list. Spend time visualizing
what an ideal day, month, or year
might look like. This pre-retirement
work helps you deal with the emotional
challenges of leaving your
work identity behind. I advise my
clients to have a plan but to hold it
lightly. Circumstances change as
we move through life and your plan
should change and evolve along
with you. For example, clients who
plan to travel must consider how
mobility or health changes might
affect their plans. You might want to
consider traveling in a group, letting
someone else take charge, or maybe
someone else can do the driving?
Good proactive planning can
help reduce any potential negative
affects later on down the road.
How to
Avoid
Loneliness
in
Retirement
Part 2
Making new friends can
feel like a challenge, but
it is very doable if you’re
looking in the right places!
The secret is to let
your passions lead the
way, and the right people
will follow. Banish
boredom and stay engaged
with others by
joining a club that suits
your interests. From book
clubs to hiking groups,
getting involved with a
club is a great way to stay
socially active. Don’t know where to
start? Check out the local Toastmaster
club, Senior clubs or local church
groups.
Retirement is a chance to reinvent
yourself and try new hobbies you
might not have considered before.
Now that you have more free time,
it’s time to listen to that inner voice
that says, “What if?” Have you always
wanted to sing … outside of the
shower? Take a choir class! Want
to learn how to snap that perfect
shot of your grandkids? Join a local
photography club, bird watching or
check out the local college or recreation
centre in your area for watercolour
painting, pottery or batik
classes.
Get active this year. Try a new yoga
class for seniors. Not only is exercise
extremely beneficial to the body,
it’s also important for the mind and
soul. Studies have shown that an
active lifestyle can decrease depression
and loneliness in retired seniors
and help to manage stress and anxiety.
So, what are you waiting for? Exploring
the outdoors is a great way
to exercise because you can take
part in a wide variety of activities
that never get boring. Walking, hiking,
birding, or kayaking, what ever
your heart desires.
One of the greatest joys of retirement
is the ability to spend more
time with family. If you have grandkids,
take your newfound flexibility
as an opportunity to bond with
them and make lasting memories
you’re sure to cherish in the years
to come. Get to know your grandkids
better by exploring your own
museum or parks together. You
and your grandchildren can learn
about science, search for animals in
a national park nearby. If you step
outside your comfort zone and try
something new together, you may
be amazed at how much you have
in common!
Sudoku
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve
a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill
each row, column and box. Each number
can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can figure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
The more numbers you name, the easier it
gets to solve!
